Da quel che so, ascoltando la radio, questo tipo d'effetto è davvero-

Ad ogni modo, MelOn Station: HYBE LABELS. Solitamente i saluti da questo programma li facevo con gli altri membri, è la prima volta che partecipo da solo.

Visto che sono qui per conto mio, l'atmosfera è un po' desolante. Però, visto che oggi sono qui con voi, ragazzə, sicuramente mi divertirò.

Potervi ritrovare, solo noi qui insieme, dopo così tanto tempo, è davvero fantastico, ma ho una notizia ancora migliore.

Allora, oggi è uscito il mio primo album solista ufficiale, FACE.

(ride) Essere qui da solo è piuttosto imbarazzante.

Esatto, finalmente è uscito il mio primo album solista. Visto che tocca a me abbellire l'inizio della primavera 2023, sono parecchio agitato.

È la prima volta che condivido col mondo un album simile, ho molte ansie e mi sento parecchio sotto pressione, ma non vedo l'ora di farvelo ascoltare.

Sul serio, mentre ci lavoravo, la gente a me vicina mi ha sostenuto molto ed è grazie agli altri membri se quest'album è venuto alla luce. È grazie a tutti loro se ho potuto esordire carico di buone sensazioni, buone come l'atmosfera che ha la primavera.

Oggi, riempirò questa trasmissione parlando del mio album solista e poi c'è un segmento in cui risponderò alle vostre domande e curiosità.

Un'altra buona notizia è che non mi vedrete solo oggi, ma anche domani. Quindi cerchiamo di divertirci al massimo sia oggi che domani, okay?

Dunque, come prima cosa, passiamo all'ascolto!

La prima canzone è il singolo principale del primo album solista di Jimin dei BTS, FACE, rilasciato oggi. Si intitola "Like Crazy", vogliamo ascoltarla insieme?

RIGUARDO "FACE"

Ragazzə, siamo qui, su Melon Station, e questo è lo speciale HYBE LABELS dedicato a me, Jimin, ed abbiamo appena ascoltato la prima canzone: "Like Crazy", il singolo del mio album solista.

Cosa ne pensate?

Solitamente, quando facciamo questo tipo di trasmissioni, c'è sempre qualcuno di fianco che risponde, ma dato che sono da solo.. (ride)

Sul serio, riascoltarla così è tutta un'esperienza nuova. Vi ho lavorato sodo e l'ho ascoltata un sacco, durante la preparazione, ma sentirla insieme a voi.. mamma mia, è molto molto più speciale ed importante.

Questa è la prima volta che rilascio un album solista ufficiale e ho cercato di infondervi tutti i cambiamenti emotivi che ho vissuto nel corso degli ultimi 2 anni, specialmente quelli del periodo della pandemia. È un progetto nato dopo aver sormontato diverse difficoltà ed essermi liberato della solitudine derivante dal mio stile di vita e dallo smarrimento in cui ero caduto, e tutto questo grazie alla musica. Anzi, dopo aver riflettuto ed essermi posto faccia a faccia con me stesso, credo di essere finalmente pronto per un nuovo inizio.

Il titolo del mio album è 'FACE', giusto? L'ho scelto proprio perché volevo esemplificare questa mia sfida e confronto interiore.

Allora, adesso vi presenterò ognuna delle canzoni, una per una.

La prima ad essere uscita è "Set Me Free Pt.2", pre-rilasciata il 17 marzo. Inclusi "Like Crazy" e la sua versione inglese, i brani contenuti in quest'album spaziano dal genere pop, all'hip-hop fino al R&B. Ma dato che quest'album tratta un percorso di crescita e superamento, la trama emotiva delle tracce in esso contenute è lineare ed i brani sono tutti interconnessi. Partiamo da un'atmosfera di ansia, paura e vuoto, ma poi le emozioni descritte montano fino a diventare risolutezza e volontà di auto-confronto, per poi arrivare ad un mio nuovo inizio in qualità di artista.

Va bene, vogliamo dare un'occhiata alle canzoni?

Inizierò con "Like Crazy". È la 3a traccia dell'album, nonché il singolo principale.

(legge) "Like Crazy" è un brano synth pop che, al sound carico di sintetizzatori e del ritmo intenso della batteria, contrappone la voce struggente di Jimin. L'ispirazione per questa canzone mi è venuta dal film 'Like Crazy'.

Non so quantə di voi l'avranno visto, ma io mi ci sono imbattuto mentre guardavo un video su YouTube. Ho sentito la canzone "In Return" di Breakbot, che mi ha molto colpito, quindi sono andato a cercare la traduzione del testo e ho trovato un altro video in cui quel brano era collegato al film 'Like Crazy'. Mi sono chiesto, "Oh? Che film è?". Ho provato a guardarlo e mi sono reso conto che aveva molto in comune con le canzoni cui stavo lavorando per il mio album. Ed ecco come sono nati i dialoghi all'inizio e alla fine della traccia. Sono tratti dal film, e credo la pellicola di 'Like Crazy' sia davvero stata di grandissima ispirazione, per me. Il film è piaciuto anche ai produttori e compositori, quindi abbiamo sviluppato quell'idea ed ora eccoci qui, la canzone è uscita, finalmente.

Quando l'ascolterete, capirete cosa intendo, ma nella canzone c'è molto dolore, che è qualcosa che solitamente cerchiamo di evitare e di rifuggire, preferendo continuare a sognare. Parla di questi due aspetti; forse, potrà sembrare piuttosto vivace e movimentata, ma in realtà non lo è. Sono sicuro voi coglierete tutte le diverse sfumature ed emozioni. Ad ogni modo, spero non vi rattristerete troppo ascoltandola e che, invece, l'apprezzerete.

Per quanto riguarda "Like Crazy", è tutto.

Ora partirò dalla prima traccia e poi andrò avanti da lì.

Si tratta di "Face-off", è la prima canzone dell'album ed il genere è trap soul.

Quando l'ascolterete, capirete perché, ma penso sia un brano d'apertura un po' inaspettato.

Oh, beh, in realtà non so! Non so che idea ve ne farete, ma come inizio è parecchio tosto. Ho pensato che la vostra reazione potrebbe essere, tipo "Oh? E questo [genere di canzone] è così importante [da essere il brano d'apertura]?"

In realtà, dato che si trova all'inizio, rappresenta un po' la mia volontà di mettere ordine nelle mie emozioni e pensieri, e credo riuscirete a cogliere tutta la rabbia e delusione contenute nella canzone. Ad esser sincero, non mi è ancora facile parlare di quelle emozioni e non posso scendere nel dettaglio o raccontarvi altre storie riguardo a quel periodo, quindi [per quanto riguarda questa traccia] la chiudo qui.

Passiamo alla seconda canzone, allora. "Dive". È una traccia che fa da ponte tra le emozioni espresse nel primo brano, "Face-off" e quelle del successivo, "Like Crazy". Ho riflettuto molto su come poter rendere la narrazione ed i collegamenti tra i vari sentimenti contenuti in quest'album il più naturali e fluidi possibile, ed è così che è nata "Dive".

Ascoltandola, noterete che è un brano piuttosto desolato e credo l'impressione che volessi dare fosse proprio quella di smarrimento totale, ovunque mi trovassi o fossi diretto. I suoni che sentite li ho registrati personalmente, ma è abbastanza di facile ascolto, quindi spero vi piaccia.

Ho già presentato la 3a traccia, "Like Crazy", quindi è ora di passare alla 4a.

Credo ascoltandola e leggendo il testo, sia una canzone piuttosto intuitiva e di facile interpretazione, ma volendo esser più precisi, questo brano parla di ciò che ho provato quando siamo usciti dall'inattività [*a fine pandemia, durante i concerti di Las Vegas]. Quando ho rincontrato gli altri membri, vedevo come tutti loro continuavano a lavorare duramente e, in questa canzone, ho cercato di esprimere il disappunto che avevo, invece, per me stesso. Beh, i membri mi erano anche mancati molto, quindi, tra me e me, sentivo anche il bisogno di un po' di conforto. Spero coglierete la tristezza di cui parlo e la prenderete per quella che è [*senza ulteriori interpretazioni], e che apprezzerete questo brano.

L'ultima, la 5a traccia, è "Set Me Free Pt.2"!

In questo brano ho cercato di trasporre tutto il mio desiderio di ritrovare gli altri membri, di superare le avversità e di proseguire sul mio percorso. Sicuramente l'avrete notato: in questa canzone volevo mostrarvi quel lato intenso e d'impatto tipico delle performance dei BTS.

L'espressione chiave è 'Set Me Free (libera[r]mi)', inteso come "Liberare me stesso".

Poi, come sapete, c'è anche un'altra canzone intitolata 'Set Me Free', parte dell'album di SUGA hyung. Credo anche il suo brano esprima sentimenti complessi, quindi, una volta riascoltato, ho deciso che nella mia canzone avrei espresso la mia volontà di superare tali emozioni. Ecco com'è nata "Set Me Free Pt.2". È un brano che parla di libertà, quindi spero ne trarrete una buona energia.

E poi c'è questa traccia, "Like Crazy (eng ver.)", spero l'ascolterete molto.

Per quanto riguarda l'introduzione dell'album, è tutto.

Ok, il mio album si intitola FACE, giusto?

La parola "face" può anche significare "affrontare" certe situazioni. Quello che viene ora è un segmento in cui parlerò di come affronterei e cosa farei in determinate situazioni. Abbiamo anche un titolo: FACE TALK!

Iniziamo dalla prima domanda!

Face talk! (ride) Ecco la prima situazione:

Una mattina ti svegli e trovi i membri dei BTS a casa tua, intenti a mangiare come se fossero a casa loro. In questo contesto, Jimin cosa farebbe?

Oh, io... Credo sarei seduto con loro a mangiare, a mia volta. Beh, sono 13 anni (che ci conosciamo), ragazzə! Credete che in una situazione simile ci troveremmo a disagio? Credo semplicemente chiederei, "Come [mai] siete venuti qui?", "Mangiamo insieme", e poi mi unirei a loro per mangiare. A ben pensarci, sembra divertente. Sarebbe bello lasciare che vengano a trovarmi.

Ok, ora la seconda domanda:

Se un giorno diventassi veramente un mangaetteok [*dolcetto/gnocco di riso, è anche uno dei soprannomi di Jimin] e qualcuno cercasse di punzecchiarti con una forchetta, cosa faresti?

Diciamocelo, come può fare un tteok [*gnocco] a ribellarsi? Beh, ovviamente mi lascerei mangiare (ride). Punzecchiato da una forchetta (ride) Perché, sul serio, che razza di rivolta potrebbe mai fare un manggaetteok? (ride). Credo se mai diventassi un manggaetteok, non potrei fare resistenza.

Ora la terza domanda:

Un giorno, ti ritrovi improvvisamente al primo anno di scuole medie. È il primo giorno di scuola, apri la porta della tua classe, entri, e.. Cosa farebbe Jimin?

Visto che sarebbe un ritorno alla vita da studente dopo tanto, credo guarderei per bene uno ad uno i miei amici per cercare di ricordarmi i loro nomi. Quando ero ragazzino, visto che stavo in un quartiere piuttosto piccolo, la stragrande maggioranza dei miei amici delle elementari era nella mia stessa scuola media. Quindi non avevo problemi a ricordarmi chi fossero. Se tornassi ora al passato, credo cercherei di ricordare.

La quarta domanda:

Hai comprato dei vestiti online, ma quando ti arrivano, non ne sei soddisfatto. Cosa farebbe Jimin?

Se posso farmeli rimborsare, proverei quello, altrimenti li metterei via.

Questa è la quinta domanda:

Un giorno ti svegli e, improvvisamente, scopri che tuo fratello minore è diventato il maggiore e tu sei il maknae (il più giovane tra i due). Cosa farebbe Jimin?

Non so se posso dirlo, ma, beh, sarebbe finito/morto, per mano mia (ride) È inevitabile, perché ricorderei che originariamente sono il maggiore, no? Quindi ogni tanto mi verrebbe comunque da essere condiscendente con lui e dirgli cosa fare.

Ora, la sesta domanda:

Non vedi l'ora di andare a trovare le/i fan in questo locale, ma nessuno ti riconosce. Cosa faresti?

Beh, sarei pur sempre un membro dei BTS e voi sareste comunque nostrə fan. Non importa, purché noi siamo sempre noi, non importa se vengo riconosciuto o no. Cioè, io sarei comunque nei BTS e voi sareste comunque ARMY. Non credo sia così fondamentale. Basta quello. Non importa se mi riconoscete o meno.

Proseguo con la prossima domanda:

Dopo aver mangiato, vai a lavare i piatti ma anche se li passi e ripassi un sacco di volte, le bollicine di schiuma non spariscono. Cosa farebbe Jimin in questa situazione?

Ovviamente, non potrei che buttarli via! (ride) Cosa potrei mai farmene di un piatto che non può essere lavato? Credo cercherei una soluzione, ma se dopo 30 minuti ancora non dovesse esserci rimedio, lo butterei.

Le domande di FACE TALK erano davvero creative. Quella riguardo l'incontrare le/i fan... Comunque, abbiamo concluso "Face Talk", un segmento che mi ha fatto venir voglia di rivedervi al più presto. Esatto, quindi ci ritroveremo dopo aver ascoltato un'altra canzone. È,

ovviamente, una delle tracce contenute nel mio album. A parte il singolo e 'Set Me Free', non posso farvi sentire 'Face-off', non è l'atmosfera più adatta, questa (ride). Dunque ascoltiamo la 4a canzone: "Alone".

CONCLUSIONE

Siamo in chiusura di questo episodio di "MelOn Station : HYBE LABELS", io sono Jimin e vi ho parlato del mio album solista.

Ragazzə, cosa ve n'è parso?

È un'esperienza nuova anche per me. Ho già partecipato a questa trasmissione insieme agli altri membri, ma essere qui da solo fa un po' strano. Però sono felice di avervi potuto parlare più approfonditamente di me.

Vi sono molto grato e credo che presto, dopo che quest'episodio sarà andato in onda, potremo vederci. Ora come ora, mancano ancora alcune settimane ma spero il tempo passi in fretta, così da potervi ritrovare al più presto.

Ho in programma di lavorare sodo e fare apparizioni a diversi varietà e show musicali, quindi spero li aspetterete con trepidazione.

Grazie infinite per aver atteso quest'album e continuerò a lavorare su me stesso per diventare ancora migliore.

Oggi mi sono divertito. Come vi ho già accennato, passerò di nuovo anche domani, alla stessa ora. Ho molte cose da condividere con voi, quindi sono felice di potervi ritrovare domani. Nel frattempo, vi sarei davvero grato se poteste ascoltare tanto FACE.

3. Permite crear presentaciones con efectos visuales (movimientos de cámara), e insertar material multimedia (fotos, vides, audios) y colores atractivos.

Desventajas

1. Es un programa que para crear las presentaciones es necesario contar con Adobe Rader, algunas computadoras no cuentan con este programa y eso puede ser un poco complicado con el trato del programa.

BE DAMMED (ongoing Project)

In Indigenous cosmogonies of the Americas, all bodies of waters are connected. Rivers are the veins of the planet, their waters associate communities and ecosystems. Be Dammed investigates the effects that large dams have on natural and social landscapes in several American bio-regions. More than 250 large hydroelectric dams are projected or under construction by transnational corporations in Latin America, signifying the transition of public bodies of water into privatized resources. At the same time, the U.S. is the leading country in dam removal, allowing for the restoration of river ecosystems. In Be Dammed, aerial and satellite imagery, geo-choreographies and audio-visual essays intersect social bodies with bodies of water, exploring public space in rural contexts, and conjuring water as a common good.

In collective works like «Túnel» or «Objetos relacionais,» Lygia Clark initiates psychic processes of exchange which transform the dichotomy of subject and object. In doing so, she follows the transgressive logic of «devouring» and «vomiting». The reception of «Baba antropofágica» («Cannibalistic Saliva») also relies on the documentary film «O mundo de Lygia Clark,» filmed by Eduardo Clark in 1973. But escaping this phantasmal staging of the body seems almost impossible: kneeling over a guinea-pig-like subject lying on the floor, a figure pulls from its mouth—like spiders do from their bodies—a spittle-drenched thread and spins a cocoon around the reclining figure. The precarious division of subject and object is eliminated by this thread-like weaving, with the gestural webbing of the passive subject completing the inversion of the internal and external. In the retrospective, these interactive aspects might have been what was most convincing. In contrast to Performance and Body Art, Lygia Clark understood herself to be an initiator of processes, and was most successful in this respect when her haptic attempts on orderings were targeted at inter-subjective body politics.

They form a circle around the lying person and put colored threads inside their mouths—the threads are expelled from their lips wet, soaked with slobber. Saliva is stimulation. These people are then like spiders, depositing the webs on the person’s body. The spider can see the prone body—but only her “phantasm” can see the spider. It is within this kind of exercise that the object, a simple thread, becomes, for Clark, a powerful tool for the marriage between body and unconscious knowledge through art. A nairobi-based 29-year-old entrepreneur and inventor — is the founder of a startup that recycles plastic waste into bricks that are stronger than concrete. called gjenge makers ltd, her company initiated following the development of a prototype machine that turns discarded plastic into paving stones. one day at the factory means 1,500 churned plastic pavers, prized not just for the quality, but for how affordable they are.

‘it is absurd that we still have this problem of providing decent shelter – a basic human need,’ said matee. ‘plastic is a material that is misused and misunderstood. the potential is enormous, but its after life can be disastrous.’

before creating gjenge makers ltd, nzambi matee majored in material science and worked as an engineer in kenya’s oil industry. in 2017 she quit her job to start creating and testing pavers, which are a combination of plastic and sand. she gets the waste material for free from packaging factories and also buys it from other recyclers. through experimentation, she understood which plastics bind better together and then created the machinery that would allow her to mass produce them.

‘we must rethink how we manufacture industrial products and deal with them at the end of their useful life,’ said soraya smaoun, who specializes in industrial production techniques with UNEP.  ‘nzambi matee’s innovation in the construction sector highlights the economic and environmental opportunities when we move from a linear economy, where products, once used, are discarded, to a circular one, where products and materials continue in the system for as long as possible.’

Zoodrams: large aquariums with marine ecosystems, that embody the logic of the exhibition, in particular Zoodram 4 (2011) in which a crab turned a resin mask of the Sleeping Muse (1910) by Constantin Brancusi into its living habitat.

Zoodram 5 (After Sleeping Muse by Constantin Brancusi), 2011, a glass tank that provided living quarters for different species of crabs that cannibalize each other, a none-too-subtle metaphor for human rapaciousness.

The tank is a repeated object in many of Huyghe’s works. They featured prominently in his retrospective, and a massive fish tank currently sits on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum as part of the Roof Garden Commission. Huyghe’s tanks are filled with strange, beautiful creatures. On the roof of the Met are tadpole shrimp, while inside the tanks in the retrospective were hermit crabs. The tank is an enclosed space. The viewer stands outside it, watching the creatures engage in their everyday activities. The tank is a lens through which we can better see Huyghe’s overall project. In an interview with Emily Nathan for Art in America, Huyghe stated:

The work is not “displayed” under a narrative — that’s a system I avoid. I could not imagine a chronological order, either. As you say, most of what I have done is construct situations that happen within a given body. Every one is a constellation network of process, all sorts of heterogenous and anachronistic things come together or are associated within a constructed situation, and so it is difficult to present them in a site where they were not originally, or to organize them in a linear way.

Pierre Huyghe says that life is the core interest of his practice: “I’m interested in how to quantify the different variations of being alive…how to intensify the presence of things.” Many of his performance, film, and installation pieces employ a range of living creatures—insects, plants, animals, and human beings—in order to explore their behavior and interactions. These works become laboratories for articulating complex social phenomena, the precarious distinction between fiction and reality, and contemporary belief systems.

The sculptor Pawel Althamer, who had a cameo in After Nature with a pair of flayed bodies, has brought an entire parade of the undead to Expo 1. He and neighbours from his apartment block in Bródno, Poland, each created a life-sized alter ego, modelled out of scrap metal and technological trash. Like zombies from an apocalyptic nightmare, the figures in “Bródno People” march sightlessly through a huge gallery, an ungainly procession of solid ghosts that recalls Rodin’s “Burghers of Calais”.

Revival Field

Revival Field began as a conceptual artwork with the intent to sculpt a site’s ecology. 1993 marked a successful conclusion to the first phase of this collaborative effort. The initial experiment, located at Pig’s Eye Landfill, a State Superfund site in St. Paul, Minnesota, was a replicated field test using special hyperaccumulator plants to extract heavy metals from contaminated soil. Scientific analysis of biomass samples from this field confirmed the potential of “Green Remediation” as an on-site, low-tech alternative to current costly and unsatisfactory remediation methods. Despite soil conditions adverse to metal uptake, a variety of Thlaspi, the test plant with the highest capacity for hyperaccumulation, was found to have significant concentration of cadmium in its leaves and stems.

Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake

At first glance, Thomas Hirschhorn’s monumental installation Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake resembles a kind of documentation centre turned upside down, filled with papers, chained books, piled archives and photographs. In the centre, the jarring presence of a monumental cake surrounded by twelve giant spoons creates a metaphor on the state of the world today, and on the end of many 20th century utopias. Reminiscent of popular ‘souvenir spoon’ trinkets, the spoons portray individuals or entities that the artist associates with failed utopias: Mies van der Rohe, Rosa Luxemburg, Malevitch, Nietzsche, Venice, China, the Moon, firearms, fashion, the Nazis’ 1937 exhibition of “degenerate art,” Swiss Rolex watches, and the Chicago Bulls basketball team.

Between the Waves 

Landfill Dance by Tejal Shah FIG. 5 is a video installation that involves several professional dancers dressed as quasi-mythical creatures, striking poses and moving in synchronicity in an unnamed mass landfill site in India. The work portrays ‘neither a neoliberal optimism nor paralysing despair’, but instead draws on the ‘potential of the bodies to coexist with this environment’, as is part of Boetzkes’s broader thesis that artists have demonstrated the need for an ‘intensive “working through” of the site’ and waste (pp.121–25). How, if at all, the work deals with people that notoriously have little choice but to rummage and work through mass garbage sites on a daily basis is unattended to.

Tejal Shah: Landfill Dance is part of the larger five-channel video installation, Between the Waves. Each channel also functions as a stand-alone piece. I first worked on channel 1, which is a longer film that forms the backbone of the installation.

“Riverbed was for the Louisiana Museum, whose architecture is from a period where the seamlessness between inside and outside was introduced, as were a number of modern illusions of openness,” he says by way of preface. “Within this very contemplative museum, but also this very well functioning exhibition machine, I wanted something that would almost have the volume and scale to destabilise the museum a bit, pressure it. So I wanted it to look almost like a rock garden, but also to have a sense of a mudslide. Brutal, deathlike; it’s almost an alien landscape, and really it’s there to introduce destabilising qualities that one experiences outside – you’re walking on a slope, keeping your balance, recomposing your walking to fit the landscape – but you don’t really notice, you take them for granted. So I don’t only move the landscape in but also the microconflicts: suddenly we don’t take them for granted. This is what is interesting: the experience, the activities you do, also become exhibited. It’s as much about the interaction as about the actual plateau, the platform, on which people are walking.”

Mitsubishi RVR: the forgotten jewel

In another lifetime I had a 1972 Dodge Colt station wagon. It was my first car with real heat (having had several Beetles before that) and it served my well, very well. Monday to Friday it took me to work and back, when spring came around you’d find me at the local drag strip on Friday nights going up against…and winning, anything they put in the other lane. On weekends I’d throw on a roof rack, fill up the back with building materials and head up into the hills to attack my new cottage project.

Why am I rambling on about a Colt wagon in a Mitsubishi RVR review? Simple, that Colt had a Mitsubishi engine and was the American version of the Mitsubishi Gallant. It was also  was my first real exposure to Japanese engines, and it was bulletproof.

One thing I’ve always said about Mitsubishi products, “Great engines but loud cars as they lack noise insulation.” Well I’m pleased to say that after several years of absence behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi product, their entry-level SUV, the RVR proved me wrong.

Over 1.3 million RVRs have been sold in 90 countries over the years, yet RVR moniker doesn’t exactly come to mind on our shores when thinking about subcompact/compact SUVs and crossovers. That’s really too bad, because the little Mitsubishi has a lot going for it, including one of the best warranties in the industry, and with nine years under its belt, it has a proven reliability history, and is affordable!

Yes it’s got some noteworthy competitors in the segment; Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Qashqai, Ford EcoSport, Chevrolet Trax and the Jeep Renegade but the RVR betters more than one. Mitsubishi has upped the anti with this year’s model refresh.

The 2020 RVR gets a clean facelift from the front door pillars forward, including LED lighting and the new corporate grille. Chrome shark gills on the front fenders now serve as the basis for the side crease line while the rear has been reworked to give the RVR a more robust look. Likewise, the interior has been upgraded with new materials and colours, and of course the must have of must haves, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility via the standard 8-inch touchscreen.

Yes it still rides on the same RVR platform and uses the same engines that have been around since 2011, and yes the nine-year old chassis still offers a ride and handling that outshines most of the others in the niche market. Proof that Mits engineers were ahead of the game all along and holding true to the old adage of  “why fix it if it ain’t broke”, and isn’t that a testament to a well thought out design, if it’s still clean and fresh nine years later.

Head office has shuffled their trim levels to improve its value proposition. Two front wheel drive models serve as entry points with the base ES starting at $22,998 and base all-wheel drive version (ES AWC) coming in at  $25,298. Sadly the extinction of the manual transmission (another Mits stronghold) continues. I couldn’t have won all those races with a CVT!

Two naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines are offered, a 2.0L and a 2.4L. The first offers 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, while the bigger one, only available on the SE AWC trim ($27,997) or higher, pumps out 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft.

My top tier GT AWC (priced at a hair under $34,000), came with that bigger engine and the lockable 4WD system – a rarity not only in this size segment but with larger sport utes as well. Regular readers will recall that it’s one of the features I’m looking for in our replacement of the family X-Trail which too, has a locking system. Simply put you can switch from a conventional front-bias reactive system where the vehicle is front-wheel-drive, engaging the rear wheels when slip is detected, which ultimately improves gas pump stops. At the push of a button, AWC locks all four wheels for preventive all-wheel-drive.

The RVR’s cabin is roomier than most other subcompacts, with a panoramic roof adding to the airiness. Visibility is very good all around.

Whether we’re talking steering wheel mounted controls or dash controls they’re large, simple, straightforward and easy to use. Great ergonomics make it shine in a world where everything has been overblown and over thought, and of course you’re not paying for a rolling gadget wagon. 

I did get pampered with the GT’s 710-watt Rockford Fosgate punch audio system with 9 speakers and the trunk mounted subwoofer. There’s 20 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in position and just under 50 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.

On the road the 2.4 L moved the crossover about nimbly delivering smooth and linear power. Acceleration is decent as long as you don’t mind the CVT’s whine –turn up the 710 watts. The steering wheel mounted paddle shifters added to the fun factor. The chassis offers just enough stiffness to allow for some sporty antics and sooft enough to cushion washboard roads and city potholes. In fact it’s close to having one of the best rides in the category. 

I averaged 9.0 L/100 km during my week-long ride with mostly highway driving. Hampered no doubt by winter warm ups and plowing through the powder.

If someone were to describe a vehicle to you as being affordable, built to last and fuel-efficient, equipped with all-wheel-drive and backed by an industry-best warranty, you’d be silly to dismiss it as an option, and the 2020 Mitsubishi RVR deserves to be taken seriously by those in the market for a subcompact SUV.

 Yes the RVR has some well-known serious competitors in the segment. What do they say when you’re number two you try harder, well when you’re number five you’ll try even harder. Truth is Mitsubishi doesn��t need to try harder, at the risk of repeating myself, it already has an affordable fuel-efficient, reliability proven SUV with an industry-best warranty. The problem is getting the word out.
