The week of silence between you flowed smoothly into the next. You could hardly see him in the common rooms, and your chat was horribly empty. Not a single message from either him or you. The only sign of life from Iso was his appearance online from time to time. Sage invited you to come with her to the Viper lab. You were in one of the testing areas, but this time you were led somewhere deeper.
The thin corridor made you feel uneasy and uneasy, like you were being led into some kind of cell. And the closer you got to the wide door, the more the clouds thickened over you. Sage put some kind of card to the scanner, and then the automatic door unlocked. There were several rooms. And a perfect view of what was inside. In one of them lay some girl, hooked up to some machines. In another some strange mechanisms that you assumed Viper and Killjoy had developed together. In the center room where you were - Viper was standing and talking to Reyna about something. As you approached, you began to discern meaning in their phrases.
"Could this be the same thing that happened on Omega Earth? Radianite Plague,” - Viper said, folding her arms across her chest. - "Then it makes sense, then. If feeding on souls only sustains it, could the Radianite treatment methodology do anything to help the process?"
"I'm willing to go there again if I have to. We need information,” -Reyna's voice was irritated. - "We need to assemble a squad."
"Good,”- the girl's gaze went to you. - "Why are you here?"
"Just about the invasion of Omega Earth. Y/N will be in your squad,” - Sage nodded at you.
"And that's worth coming here for? This is an isolated area, Sage."
"I know it is. I had to get Reyna because preparations for the portal launch are almost complete. The quicker and more unexpectedly we pay a visit, the more effective the results will be. I told the others, too. They'll be waiting."
Reyna straightened up in a flash and, with a nod to Viper, headed for the exit. You followed her with a glance, then looked at Viper and the girl on the other side of the glass. The woman stood in front of you and gave you a stern look. You realized you shouldn't linger and hurried with Sage to the meeting place.
To your surprise, Iso was there. It seemed to you that he was deliberately not looking at you and avoiding all interaction. Standing nearby were Killjoy and Sova. The two seniors' experience in the mission told them it was going to be tough. Brimstone, Cypher, and Raze remained in support. To reopen the portal or come to the rescue in case of emergency.
Reyna was already dressed in her protective gear and standing with weapons in hand.
"Killjoy, you know what to do. We need information. The rest of us are backup. Time is short, so act quickly and carefully."
Tumblr media
The building was gloomy. You quietly followed the others, glancing around every now and then. The many closed drawers made it feel like you were in a maze. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Killjoy and Owl going off somewhere, apparently they know where the information might be stored, or at least have an idea. Reyna nods in your direction and you obediently walk in that direction with your weapon at the ready. You've had steady training with different agents all this week, so you've learned to control some of your abilities, and you've even gotten better at hitting targets. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for successful missions.
A red light blinked softly somewhere above you. You listened to the silence and heard only your own heartbeat. In an instant, you began to hear footsteps. It was someone outside. And he clearly wanted to make his presence known. A brief message from Iso came through your earpiece:
"Security is checking the area. Be careful."
You slowly emerge from your cover, surveying the semi-darkness.
"We have successfully infiltrated the system center. Looking for information."
"Copy that."
You look in the direction of the sounds and wait tensely. A silhouette smoothly reveals itself. Broad, clearly male. You take aim, ready to shoot if you need to. Before you can blink, the weapon falls out of your hands from the shot of the man in front of you.
"Shit,” - you hiss, trying to find another weapon.
Pulling out your gun, you aim again and fire at point-blank range. But the bullets meet the obstacle and fall to the floor. A purple glint in the darkness, makes you freeze. The red light starts flashing more actively and a nasty siren starts blaring through the building. You immediately dive into the maze of cubicles, haunted by the sounds of gunfire and footsteps.
"Y/N, situation. "- Reyna's voice booms in your ear.
"Omega Iso."
"Killjoy?"
"Data is downloading, it takes time."
The shot grazes your leg and you shriek, falling to the floor. Pain echoes throughout your leg, then throughout your body. Several more shots pierce your limbs. You bite your lip bloody enough not to give away your presence and crawl behind the crate. Your breathing can't be heard over the sounds of the alarms, but the footsteps and gunshots throughout the room are very audible. You try to get up, but a wave of pain pierces you again. You pull out of your pocket some sort of injection that Sage and Viper developed. With her powers, this injection gives you a temporary healing effect, which can help in missions where she isn't available.
A feeling of relief spreads through your body and you get up off the floor. You notice a silhouette nearby and immediately fire a few shots. This time the man falls, and then you start running towards where you all split up. It looks like it wasn't Omega Iso, but a simple guard, for the footsteps of pursuit continued. Suddenly something appeared in front of you. From the matter you realized it was their Omen. He immediately hooked his arm around your neck and lifted you above the ground. You dropped your weapon and began grabbing at his clawed arm with your hands, trying to free yourself. The stress of the situation caused you to activate your abilities and it played to your advantage. You immediately teleported away. The internal vibrations of Omen's abilities confused you again. You'd have to train with him more to get used to the sensation. There was no pain, surprisingly. Apparently that's the effect of the injection.
You form a blob of blinding shadow and send it towards the place where the two agents from the planet Omega were, then touch the earpiece and say in Omen's voice:
"How's it going?"
"Almost done. Run to the rendezvous point."
"Copy that."
You start running toward the place that flashed the most red. That's where you came from. Apparently you've already sent a message to Alpha land. You were almost there when you suddenly notice purple patterns on the floor. You look at the floor then at Iso running past you. In his eyes you notice a glint of some sort.
"Y/N"! - he shouts, but his shout is cut short as you find yourself in Iso's omega space.
Your powers automatically keyed off and all you could do was shoot.
Oh, crap.
Iso's a good shot. Any version of him. You're screwed.
The purple walls fall away and you find yourself one-on-one with him. He fires a few shots before he stops and looks at you. Several bullets hit you in the stomach, causing you to clutch at it with your hands. Blood came up to your throat. You coughed and looked up at him. He hesitated for a moment, but immediately fired a couple of final shots into your head.
"I'm sorry,”- was the last thing you heard before you were plunged into oblivion.
Tumblr media
A sharp jolt of pain makes you open your eyes. Tingles in your head and some other parts of your body bring you back to consciousness. Sage is sitting next to you, holding a few of her crystals. As soon as you open your eyes, she stops working.
"How do you feel?"
"It hurts,” - you squeak as another wave of pain hits your body.
"The first time is always like that,” - Sage nods. - "The next time you come back to life, it won't hurt as much. But it would be better if there were no next time."
"I died?"
"Yes. But you're alive and well now."
Your gaze slides across the room. You seem to have been treated in your own room. You notice the broad figure of Iso in your chair. He was sitting with his eyes closed. Most likely dozing.
"Rest,” - Sage said a little louder, obviously to wake Iso. But he didn't move. - "When he wakes up, let him come to me."
"Okay."
As soon as Sage disappeared on the other side of the door, Iso opened his eyes. You stared at him with incomprehension. A dissonance was building in your mind. He'd been keeping his distance and avoiding you, and here he was sitting in your room, blatantly ignoring Sage's hint. Although maybe he was worried that you were dead. It's not every day your ally dies on the battlefield.
"Why didn't you leave? "- You ask, pulling yourself up. Your body still ached.
"Should I? "- He answered a question with a question.
You didn't know what to say. You didn't want him to leave. It was easier and calmer to be with him, but at the same time, you felt resentful of him, of what had happened over the last week. So you lay back down, leaving the question unanswered. You covered your eyes and heard a chair creak and footsteps heading for the door. More than anything, you didn't want to be alone right now.
"Don't go,” - you whisper.
"I wasn't going to,” - you open your eyes and see him leave his shoes at the door, then walk toward you and sit on the bed. It sags under his weight, and you roll a little toward him. You cover yourself with the blanket in embarrassment. He heard.
The blanket slides off your head and you look innocently at Iso. The man looks at you with a slight smile. His violet eyes look so beautiful and bright, it takes your breath away. The guy lets out a small chuckle, after which his hand rests on your cheek.
"This is why I didn't want to see you. I'm drowning in your eyes like a swamp, and I'm afraid I won't get out of these feelings,”- Iso's sudden confession confused you even more.
You opened your mouth to say something, but your thoughts traitorously tangled into a huge deep. Yes, you liked Iso, but you didn't think anything serious could come out of it. Relationships aren't welcome in the service after all. Self-deception, avoiding thoughts and all that. You've tried everything and you're almost there, but all these events are only driving you deeper into the maelstrom. You very much want to fall into this hurricane of not only passion, but already romance.
"Are you just gonna keep quiet? Y/N? "- Iso is leaning over you. -" Am I being rejected?"
He laughed. He knew.
"Keep drowning,” - you said, and then pulled the boy into a kiss.
The gentle touch of his lips made you forget about the pain and worry. Just because you both have a weakness now doesn't make you the best agents in the protocol, but since Raze and Killjoy could do it, why can't you? Iso hovers over you as he continues to kiss you, then slowly pulls back and dusts your face with kisses. You smile, after which you hug the Chinese man tightly.
"How long has it been? "- you start your question as soon as the guy lies down next to you.
"As soon as you came to the protocol,” - he played with your hair. One of his ears was missing an earpiece. - "When we met eyes in my ears some romantic song was playing in my ears and I just… Fell in love with your eyes. It's corny, but no one can control their own feelings. I thought it would go away, but after that party… You know."
"You didn't have to do that, did you?"
"I could have,” - he nodded, -”but why miss the chance? Anyway, I'm not meant to build a family with ordinary people."
"You mean you want to build a family with me?" - You're stunned.
"Anything's possible in the future."
"Oh, why did Sage call you? Are you hurt? "- You changed the subject.
"No. She's just busting me for exposing our relationship a little."
"A little? You did what?"
"Another time,"- he kissed your cheek. His phone vibrated. - "Mrs. Healer is very unhappy and demands me to her office."

The MD-0064 Darilbalde
Of the 157 member corporations of the Benerit Group, Jeturk Heavy Machinery was doubtlessly among the most influential, founding one of the four main houses at the Asticassia School of Technology.
Majorly involved in the mobile suit arms race, the corporation is responsible for a number of influential designs that can be seen in the hands of many factions across Earth-Sphere. As a proof-of-concept for their next-generation machines, Jeturk Heavy Machinery developed the MD-0064 Darilbalde.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The standout feature of the Darilbalde was its advanced unmanned drone technology. While superficially resembling the GUND-BITs used by GUND-ARM mobile suits, the system did not require any technology which utilized Permet. This was a point of pride for the corporation, boasting of the machine's lack of so-called "cursed technology".
Tumblr media
The machine was also capable of being either semi or completely automated, as demonstrated in a duel against the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial. The automatic system was susceptible to deception tactics. as it was overwhelmed by an otherwise easily predictable feint attack.
Tumblr media
At the conclusion of the duel, the Darilbalde was heavily damaged. The machine was recovered by Jeturk Heavy Machinery and was repaired and refitted. With an upgraded thruster assembly, a new ranged-primary weapon, and improved shields, the refitted Darilbalde was a force to be reckoned with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The refitted Darilbalde also saw real combat, engaging in a no-holds-barred battle against Grassley Defense Systems' CFK-029 Michaelis. The battle ended in a stalemate, with both mobile suits being rendered combat ineffective. The Darilbalde would be completely destroyed, with its pilot ejecting just in time.
Tumblr media
The Darilbalde also served as a means by which Jeturk Heavy Machinery's own GUND-ARM platform, the MDX-0003 Gundam Schwarzette, would finally be completed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The machine was initially developed as a collaboration between Jeturk Heavy Machinery and the Shin-Sei Development Corporation. Following Guel Jeturk taking over as CEO of Jeturk Heavy Machinery, the Schwarzette would be modified to incorporate GUND technology, in addition to utilizing several technologies originally tested on the Darilbalde.
The MD-0064 Darilbalde and MDX-0003 were designed by Ippei Gyoubu for the 2022-23 anime Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury.

So @kaiasky you asked for me to write something if I figure out more about how video game hacks work, and I did some more research.
At its most basic, if bytes are written on your machine, you can modify them. So if you have a binary on your machine, you can easily decompile it to assembly, modify the assembly, recompile it, and run it.
Except, wait, that sucks.
You have to know assembly well, which is miserable
It's really easy to brick a program that you do this to because of offsets
A lot of programs have checksums and other failsafes to detect direct modification
So that's not going to work very well.
Instead, you can ride along in the process that's executing the binary and execute your code there. For windows machines, it seems like the easiest way is DLL injection.
Now we get to use C instead of assembly (thank god) and we have a lot more flexibility. We don't want to touch the underlying binary because of (2) and (3), but since we're in the same address space as the program, we can write to the addresses that the program accesses. If we discover the location of a variable, we can overwrite its value with whatever we want.
We can abuse this further by messing with function pointers - if we can overwrite a value containing the location of another function within the binary, we can point it to our code instead, achieving arbitrary code execution. Yay! I think there are some countermeasures to this that cheat developers have to watch out for, but this is just a broad overview anyway.
Okay, great, but how do we figure out what to modify? We could read the entire binary in assembly, but I think I'd rather kill myself. Instead we have to use some tool to spy on the program. I remember using CheatEngine when I was little to cheat in flash games, and it turns out it still works pretty well - if you can repeatedly modify a value, you can use a tool to find its memory address (usually).
You can even trace back a pointer chain (ie, an attribute contained within a player object contained within a game object, but usually with many more layers) to its root and find a way to do location discovery entirely automatically, though this seems a little tricky sometimes.
Anyway. This is a very broad overview that raises as many questions as it answers for me, but I'm going to try playing around with some tools and seeing if I can get anywhere.

I’ve printed 3 minis so far, and I have 5 on the printer plate right now. Pretty stoked, ngl. The detail in them is exquisite.
I was feeling discouraged when I first started asking about 3D resin printers because everyone pretty much unanimously said if I struggle with fdm printers, I will struggle even more with a resin printer. I have S T R U G G L E D with my ender 5 plus (Hell, it still has issues I haven’t figured out yet). But honestly, this machine has so far been a breeze (knock on wood). I can see why it was the most recommended machine in my 3D printing groups.
It has been plug-and-play from the get go. It came assembled, I plugged it in, it calibrated itself, and then I put resin in the vat and BOOM I had a mini 2 hours later. One that exceeded my expectations by miles. I fully expected to have to modify and adjust every little factor to get a decent print. Granted, I still think I can get crisper details if I do whittle down my settings. But overall, I’m very happy with the results.
It also has a camera in it so you can view the progress live, and it automatically makes Timelapse videos. If you’ve been around a while you KNOW I love time lapse videos.
So anyway, if you’re looking for a good 3d resin printer- I cannot say enough good things about my Elegoo Saturn 5 ultra.

Description: On a quiet Sunday in yours and Tendou's chocalatiers, you receive an unexpected guest...
On Sundays, the quieter days, it was not uncommon for you to be seen behind the counter nodding your head to the soft jazz that played around shop. Unless there was a big event, the hired staff almost never came into the shop on Sundays - You and Tendou could handle it yourself. For you, the shop was a safe haven, a relaxing paradise from the busy work of the rest of the week. The cloyingly sweet smell of the chocolates and caramels hung in the warm air - no doubt attributed to the new chocolate wheels that have just been assembled behind the counter. Warm, aromatic chocolate waterfalls that cascade around the wheels in three colours - light, milk and dark chocolate. When they came last night, after much struggling to get them securely attached to the wall, you and tendou enjoyed a midnight snack of essentially sticking the contents of your fridge into the fondue and rating it on a scale of 1-10.
In the beginning, the shop wasn’t doing great. Yes, the chocolates were wonderful - but in comparison to the already established confectioners in Paris, there simply wasn’t enough to grab customers attention. So while Tendou went big, creating structures of chocolate rabbits for Easter, and massive trees for Christmas, you baked. Nothing too fancy - just croissants, pain au chocolat, cookies, an odd cake. Then together, you bought a fancy coffee machine (which left you eating bread, soup, and chocolates for a week to make up for the heavy cost) and eventually, a steady trickle of regulars began to flow. Now the café-confectionary stands proudly on a busy Parisian corner, the words ‘Chocolatiers Artisanaux’ and ‘Pâtisserie’ etched into the store front.
Absentmindedly putting the sandwich just ordered by a regular into the grill, you looked back into Tendou’s workshop, where he was carefully assembling a new flavour - lavender from your garden, and peppercorns. His brow creased in concentration, he carefully poured the liquid chocolate into the moulds not spilling a single drop. When done, he caught your eye and winked. Even after six years of being together, he could still make you blush at the simplest things. Like now, how you covered your face and waited for the butterflies to cease - the same way he made you feel in highschool. The grill dinged in announcement that the sandwich was ready, and you began to make the mocha, trying to ignore Tendou singing ‘La Vie en Rose’ from his workshop. Scooping a generous helping of dark chocolate from the spinning wheel into the cup, you expertly assembled the mocha, mixing the chocolate, espresso and steamed whole milk into one perfect drink. The smell, as always, made you want to sit down and drink it, rather than serve it to the customer.
As you walked out to serve it, you couldn’t help but mumble along the words to Tendou’s singing, before placing the dish on the table for the customer. A quick conversation in French, despite living here for awhile now, still made you nervous at times - ‘Voici ton cafe…’ you placed the mocha carefully in front of him, before turning with the sandwich. ‘Et ton sandwich grillé. Puis-je vous aider pour autre chose?’
After receiving confirmation that all was okay, you made your way back to the counter when you heard the melodic chime of the bell on the door. Automatically you begin to say your normal welcome. ‘Bienvenue á-’
The words fell short of your mouth as you stared up at a familiar face, one you hadn’t seen since Tendou’s birthday, two years ago. ‘Oh my- Is it really you? Wakatoshi, it’s been so long!’ you engulfed him in a hug before holding him at arm’s length. ‘What are you doing here? Wait - let me grab Tendou, he’ll be so happy to see you!’
Ducking behind the counter, you called Tendou with such an urgency in your voice he almost dropped the tray of chocolates and practically ran out of the workshop. Upon seeing Ushijima standing in the shop, he gasped and jumped, engulfing him in a hug similar to yours.
Before Tendou could bombard him with too many questions, you intercepted. Mon chéri, give him some room. Should I close up shop? ’
‘Oh, please don’t go to any trouble for me, I can always come back if you’re busy, or I could help out in the shop?’
You placed hand on his shoulder and told him not to be silly, when do we ever see each other? You turned the sign on the door and explained the situation to the people in the café section, while Tendou interogated Ushijima about where he was staying - did he have somewhere to stay? Why is he here? Did something happen? and so on.
‘How about I make some coffee for us all, and Ushijima can talk without you asking him another question every second word, okay?’ you chuckled, pulling out two seats for them.

!DISCLAIMER! If you don't like it, don't read
Jayce x Fem Viktor (Viktoria)
A beautiful, useless thing
Chapter 3
Viktoria worked furiously.
Her hands moved with a precision that should have been impossible at that speed—adjusting, tightening, recalibrating. She poured herself into her work, into the quiet hum of the lab, into the soft whisper of machines that didn’t judge, didn’t ask questions, didn’t leave.
She told herself it was just another night. Another problem to solve, another puzzle to take apart and rebuild.
But her vision was starting to blur.
At first, she ignored it. Her movements were so automatic, so deeply ingrained, that she didn’t realize what was happening until she saw the tiny, glistening droplets on the metal—scattered, barely there—and understood.
Her hands stopped.
The lab was silent, except for the faint crackle of energy from a half-assembled Hextech core beside her. Viktoria stared at her work, at the tools that had once been an extension of herself, and watched as another tear fell onto the steel.
A bitter laugh slipped past her lips.
She never cried.
She had trained herself not to.
Tears were useless. They didn’t solve problems. They didn’t mend broken bodies, didn’t change the laws of physics, didn’t rewrite the past.
And yet here she was.
Falling apart over something so ridiculous, so painfully illogical as him.
Her jaw clenched, fists tightening.
Pathetic.
She hated herself for this.
For the jealousy. For the weakness. For letting herself feel something she had no right to feel.
She had always been, above all else, a scientist. Her body was merely a vessel for her mind—something to push past its limits, to ignore when it failed, to adapt when it betrayed her. She had long accepted that her worth lay in what she could create, not in the shell that carried her through the world.
But now?
Now she was just another fool.
A fool who had let herself believe.
She bit the inside of her cheek, sharp pain grounding her, slicing through the weight in her chest.
It wasn’t just that she loved him.
It was that, for even a single moment, she had believed it could matter.
That it could make a difference.
But it didn’t. It never would.
Because Jayce—brilliant, blinding, reckless Jayce—belonged to the world. To his ideals, his politics, his ambition. And now, to her.
Mel Medarda, with her golden eyes and razor-sharp mind. With her power, her beauty, and the way she fit so effortlessly by his side, as if that was where she had always meant to be.
Viktoria wasn’t naive.
Mel saw Jayce as a weapon, a useful tool to sharpen, wield, exploit.
And Viktoria hated how much she envied her for it.
Because at least Mel could stand beside him without hesitation. Without doubt. Without wondering if she would ever be enough.
Viktoria exhaled slowly, pressing her palms to her eyes.
It didn’t matter.
Because the moment she had realized—truly realized—that she loved him was the same moment she understood that love was already dead.
There was no solution. No way back, no rewriting, no way to be less than what she was or more than what she would never be.
Jayce had walked out that door without looking back. He had chosen the other side of that world, the one filled with light, the one that was never meant for her.
And Viktoria…
She should have felt relieved.
She had spent her whole life believing emotions were secondary, that they only clouded judgment, that love was just another variable in a world ruled by logic.
And yet, in that moment, with the bitter taste of regret in her throat, she wondered if she had been wrong all along.
Because nothing had ever hurt this much.

Factorio: Space Age introduces the "quality" system, which you can technically play without, though I'm not sure it's balanced around that. I've now played with it enough that I have some thoughts on it.
First, I think it's kind of stupid that machines cannot naively use mixed-quality materials. It means that if you put a quality module in a single furnace, the lines will get "polluted" by the plates that are produced, and the whole factory will eventually gum up. Ask me how I know. I would vastly have preferred that it not matter: use a rare gear in a belt, and either it has no special benefit, or gives a chance to grant quality or something. But if it did that, I suppose it wouldn't be much of a gameplay challenge.
There are a few other pain points. One of them is that bots and the interface in general do not handle quality very well. Quality is almost always a strict upgrade, so it would be nice if there was a setting I could tick that said "hey, go upgrade things if possible". But instead, the UI and mechanics are such that you need to specify it, and this is super annoying, because it means that I have to manually go do the replacement myself, or have an upgrade planner to upgrade quality, then cancel the job once everything that can be replaced is so that the game will stop giving me an alert. I have accumulators and solar panels set up for quality right now, and I can't immediately think of a way to automate the process of upgrading the solar fields. I'm guessing that mods will help with that eventually. I also definitely want a keybind for "increase quality" and "decrease quality" on a machine, though I guess I never went looking to see whether that was a thing, so maybe it exists and I'm ignorant.
So as I see it, there are three main ways to engage with the mechanics:
Put quality modules in a machine that you're going to craft once and hope to roll high. The advantage is that hey, maybe you'll get lucky, and for stuff that goes in the equipment grid, I think this is sensible to do. Probably also wise for infrastructure, so long as you're fine doing some manual finagling that really should be done with bots.
Put quality modules in (some) machines that make intermediates, then use whatever you skim off the top there to make quality things. This does work, but you have to skim off essentially every single production line, and I think over time you end up with too much of certain things, which kind of sucks. It's one of the things that I've been doing, since it can guarantee the higher quality stuff, and ideally all the stuff in a spaceship and your equipment grid is at highest quality available. (You can also "skim" off anything you're making a shit-ton of for science: electric furnaces and yellow inserters are the two most obvious ones. I do wish this were easier to automate so that at some point you could say "actually, don't do the quality thing anymore". Probably some circuit logic could get you there, but you can't replace modules automatically that I know of.)
Use the recycler to "reroll" quality, making a gear over and over and over until it rolls high and can be separated out. The only issue with this is that it requires the recycler, and also is very expensive, but it does mitigate the randomness in its own way.
There's a secret fourth way that I've been noodling, which is that you could essentially build five separate copies of your base, put quality modules in everything, then if you roll high, send the better materials to the other base. This is insane, which is why I like it. So you would have miners mining with quality, which then gets separated onto five different trains and brought to the smelters, which then turn some fraction into higher quality plates that get sent to the "higher" factories. Those plates go into assemblers, which have a chance of upgrade, and so on, until there are five sets of labs, each of which is working with a different set of quality flasks. But I'm pretty sure that this would have a lot of technical problems, and really risk gumming up, as well as being very space inefficient and resource intensive. Still, might be workable end game, if you could deal with the inevitable overflows and imbalances.
Overall, I like it as a problem to chew on, but I think in practice they made a few decisions that I find annoying. Mods seem like they're fix some of it, like having to manually select upgrades, but the "clogging up the inventory" issue isn't going to go away, and in fact seems like one of the basic things that the mechanic is balanced around. I really appreciate that there are many ways to approach it, and that it creates this tradeoff of "go tall" or "go wide".
I'm very curious to see what people do with it, though I think the "throw vast resources into recycling" approach is probably going to be the dominant one unless there's a great blueprint for handling the overhead. And I'm also curious where public opinion is going to land on it, since it seems like the kind of thing that might end up divisive.

The book you binded looks so cool!!! I've been meaning to get into book binding as well, especially for One Piece fics and I love the format you did it in with Zoro's logo. How did you edit it? Would you be willing to share tips on how you did it? Did you watch book binding YouTube videos?
Thanks, anon! I'm glad you enjoyed! And I'm absolutely willing to share what I learned!
For the general book-binding, I used a couple book binding how-to videos.
Turning Fanfiction Into the Hardcover Book it Deserves by Jess Less
This one helped with:
How to use an old book cover/used book for the cover of the fanfic (you can also MAKE covers, and she has another video on this as well, but I love the idea of recycling old unwanted books into something new and loved)
The basics for formatting the pages (her bit about adding a compass design for the chapters is what inspired me to use Zoro's flag logo)
How to print and prep the pages/signatures
How to finish putting the whole thing together and add some interesting design elements
I especially liked this video because it's very beginner-friendly and casual, which helped the whole project feel a little less daunting. You can get special tools for book binding (there are kits online) but as shown, it's also simple enough to do with a thumbtack and some corkboard if you're low on cash.
That said, I found the stitch in this video a bit confusing, so I used the stitch from this video instead:
Folding & Sewing - Rounded and Backed Cased Book // Adventures in Bookbinding by DAS Bookbinding
Stitch prep is specifically around 7min in if you just want to skip to that. But the whole thing is an interesting watch too. This is more professional bookbinding and he has a lot of other interesting videos if you want to do some more complex things. However I found this stitch to be very straightforward and easy to follow and assemble, so I ultimately used this one when I put together Seven Deaths.
As for my personal tips and things I learned while doing this project?
Turns out Google Docs is kind of useless for this. You'll want actual word processing software like Microsoft Word. If you don't have the cash to spend on Microsoft's ridiculous subscription policy, you can use LibreOffice which is free (I did, and it works very well).
Fics are way longer on paper than they are digitally. Seven Deaths is 'only' about a 50K fic (less, in fact). But it still makes a 200+ page book. Pic a smaller fic to start with while you figure out everything you want to do.
Do some research on good book fonts for the body of your text. You can get crazy with other things (chapter headers or title pages) but pic something recommended for your text body so it's legible.
To add character symbols (like Zoro's flag) you'll need a transparent copy of it to save as a png. Once you pull it into the word doc you can resize and arrange as needed.
Also look at other "real" books you have lying around for ideas for things to add to your book! I turned an author's note into a "Forward", added an "about the author/publisher" section at the back, put in a table of contents, etc. There's other things I want to experiment with next time. Go wild! Have fun!
Test print a couple pages before printing the full project, just to be sure it's actually the right page size, your font is legible and spaced well, etc. If you don't have a printer and you don't want to pay a print shop for some expensive test pages, try your local library! Many let you use their computers and printers for an extremely low cost.
If you don't have a printer (or not one that can do quality printing for 200+ pages) you'll need to go to a print shop. DON'T bother with places like Staples or OfficeMax. I tried this, but their machines automatically staple "booklets" out of your signatures, which messes up your paper and costs extra for this "service." Instead, track down a local print shop in your area. It's easier to talk to them directly about what you want and the quality is better anyway.
On that note, this is an expensive hobby! Printing for Seven Deaths was about $87USD. The quality was worth it, but definitely do not start if you don't have your own printer or a little bit of spending money.
You do not need as much glue or thread as you think you need. Go less. Waste not.
A lot of the end stages is just...waiting...for...glue...to...dry.
You will inevitably, invariably, mess things up on your first project. I sure did! I underestimated the sharpness of some tools and put holes places I didn't mean to; some things glued in a bit sloppily; I didn't set up my page organization exactly right my table of contents ended up on the left page when I envisioned it on the right. But you know what? It doesn't matter! Because at the end of the day you have a book that YOU MADE. And it's still fucking awesome! And now you've learned some things for next time. Do it anyway and have fun with it!
Happy crafting, anon. I hope you are able to add some personal favorites to your bookshelf soon :)

Underrated aspect of A Journey to Love is how the ensemble's perspective is being widened & complicated by their experiences. Intro talks about a war that just ended between An and Wu. An are assholes, going around kicking everyone's ass for $$
First the spy squad from Wu country just want to complete 1 stupid doomed mission, in order to clear their sworn brothers' names who fell in the final battle. No real agenda or deep thoughts besides this personal obligation and Employee Following Orders. Avengers assemble! Our FL Ren Ruyi is on the run and was a Scarlet Guard spy member from enemy country An who are holding the Wu emperor hostage... but the Wu spy chief ML does only a spot of mild torture and basically tolerates this secret because (a) he's determined to retire and (b) she is retired (c) her identity doesn't match any know big enemy of his spy org and the state. But he doesn't want her around.
... record scratch: He compromises. Ok. I do want her around. I won't get attached but ok, she's helpful. I'll even trust her to mentor the princess as we travel to rescue the Wu emperor.
She is only a tutor, though! Won't get her involved in his country's buisness.
Yet then she joins a battle and risks her life to save a bunch of theirs. Ok, ML widens his POV again. She can be their partner!
Everyone loves the mysterious friendly & feral assassin.
Then the squad finds out her identity and tries to kill her. His defense of her inclusion in the group has expanded: (a) her identity doesn't match any known enemy of his spy org and the Wu state, (b) she saved our lives, and crucially (c) she Isn't Born in An Country [isn't truly An] + (d) she was working at the command of her superiors just like we do, a cog in the war machine, and also only killed shitty members of our spy org we don't like
Ok. Now she's on the team. ML & FL are dating now and all the kids ship it. There is 1 (one) Scarlet Guard enemy county spy they accept and support.
But at the same time, she's begun to care about them in return. And we're really IN IT now.
Let's mentor the princess and throw shade on the Wu emperor, considering how our actions matter & how powerful people affect the average person. Caring for the citizens of Wu. They deserve better than their ruling class.
Tumblr media
Being generally supportive & respectful of Ren Ruyi's love for the fallen An empress and RR's quest to avenge her.
The Wu delegation willing to (tentatively) ally with RR's former disciple, a marquis of An.
Tumblr media
An marquis revealed to have gone against orders to respectfully bury the bodies of their Wu soldier friends, because in his view all loyal soliders deserve it.
The Wu delegation digging up the bodies of their dead friends, to give them a final send off, and mastering their grief to wrench it back from turning into hatred of the An people - focusing their rage and hate on selish & war hungry leaders, not the soliders and generals ordered to fight.
Tumblr media
The focus of their resentment now turned to the right direction, expands their thinking & their plotting to have a consideratiom for all the residents of An and Wu, a care for humankind. An citizens are no longer the automatic enemy. ML tells the emperor of Wu to go fuck himself, directly to his face.
Tumblr media
Caring about injustice done to some Scarlet Guards and wanting to save active !! "innocent" Scarlet Guard lives. (So far from the starting point! No background check to validate that X, Y, Z don't apply to these people. No rejection of the ML by the delegation or threats for daring to care about a random Scarlet Guard's life or death.) I sure hope the An emperor pays big for being bad at his job, but we gotta be careful about how we deal with him and not mess up An for the nice jewelry makers & brothel workers who live there.
Tumblr media
"Having compassion doesn't mean irresolute."
