I kind of wish that Aquaman was allowed to have its own animated series because I really do think that if Aquaman was separated into it's own thing outside of the Justice League, it would be allowed to focus a lot more on its characters and be given a more neat story.
Villains like Ocean Master and Black Manta are already so complex that it obviously feels like they don't ever get enough justice done for the times they're allowed a good amount of backstory and screen time. Not to mention other adversaries that should be given more spotlight, instead of being disposed right after an initial encounter.
Garth and Tula would also benefit from this because it seems as though they don't really get enough recognition as sidekicks and heroes until much later in the timeline which is a bummer, especially since Tula almost always gets axed off for shock value. Kaldur should also be given a good introduction and amount of growth time in the series. I want Kaldur and Garth to have a big bro, little bro relationship while Kaldur adjusts to his life as part of the Aqua-fam.
Same goes for old and new characters Vulko, Atlanta, Merc, Nerssius, and so many other characters don't really feel as fleshed out properly because they don't really get to do much even when they are frequently mentioned and present.
(I especially need more Murk... he's a jerk but I like the idea of him having good character growth around Orm and Arthur.)
And I would like to see Mera be given as much autonomy in an animated series as she is given in the comics. She's too badass to be left in the sidelines as just Aquaman's wife (we all know she's more than that! Hell... even Arthur thinks she's too cool for him sometimes...)
Also, this is just my side preference, maybe the story of Aquaman should focus more on changing the government and challenging the status quo of monarchies and all that b******* in Atlantis since it's clearly depicted as a very big issue in the Aquaman series.
Also since Aquaman is considered to be in very good terms with Martian Manhunter in the comics, Mera being close with Wonder Woman, and the fact that Atlantian lore is connexted with that of Greek mythology, the old gods, and the Amazons, I would also like to see Aquaman have more "crossovers" with Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman, rather than just Batman and Superman.

Make sure to Ask, I have So much I wanna talk about.
Sol is the Youngest of the Four Titans of the Extinction Event, of course, This means she was very much sought after as a Servant or Companion, mainly due to her Alpha Reaper Nodes and Giganotosaurus Rage Heart.
She Also Contains a Miniature Ecosystem, Unaffected by the Mutations that her body itself has Undertaken. Due to her Nature as King Titan, she is Immune to Many an Attack, most Notably swords and Spears. Normally, She appears to have Six arms, and Looks Vaguely like a Yutyrannus mixed with a Bear.

Masters;
Rin Tohsaka, Summoned as a Substitute for Archer and a Backup for Shirou, Though, It was rushed and Led to her being Summoned as a Saber Class. With the Rockwell Blade.
Being alot Lighter, She was much more well off for Being a Tank that struggled with Magic. And Flying away from Problems.
Sakura Matou, Summoned as a Berserker accidentally during Ataraxia from a Dusty Element Infused Book. Good terms with all Servants.
Lighter than her normal Avenger State, She is very much a better assault mount.
Rin Tohsaka (Ark War); Summoned as her Original, self, Very Large and powerful, And extremely Bulky. Is capable of Supporting life and Providing Radiation, Heat, And Other types of Protection all for the Small fee of your Giganotosaurus Hearts. All of them, Now... Cobra Kai Season 4: Can Daniel and Johnny Make Amends?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Aristotle said, “A common danger unites even the bitterest enemies.” In the upcoming season 4 of Cobra Kai, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) may finally bury the hatchet, or the axe kick, in their battle to save the valley from Cobra Kai’s villainous Sensei Kreese (Martin Kove). During Netflix’s global fan event, TUDUM, the latest sneak peek at Cobra Kai revealed a few clues about where season 4 might go. The next season of the breakout reboot hit premieres on December 31 so fans can nurse their New Year’s Eve hangovers with a Karate Kid binge.
“Many of us used to be enemies, but rivalries don’t last forever,” claims Daniel-san at the start of the new teaser. We knew at the end of season 3 that the Miyagi-Do Dojo was going to unite with the Eagle Fang Dojo in hopes that their combined forces will be enough to defeat Cobra Kai. Daniel delivered his questionably legal crane kick to Johnny’s face at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament in the original film The Karate Kid. Cobra Kai has been masterfully tucking its Easter eggs in plain sight throughout the series and for season 4 has set this as the arena for the next clash between the Valley’s rival Dojos.
Throughout season 3, Daniel and Johnny tested a truce, first in episode 2 when they fight side-by-side in search of Robby (Tanner Buchanan) and again towards the end when they have dinner together with Ali (Elizabeth Shue) at the Encino Oaks Country Club. From those interactions, Daniel and Johnny established that they can be frenemies, setting up the ultimate ‘buddy film’ chemistry for the upcoming season. Already in the teaser, the inevitable conflict between Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang tactics are playing out on comic proportions.
The new teaser also reiterates the return of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), the original owner of the Cobra Kai Dojo and sponsor of the 1985 All Valley Tournament. This was foreshadowed in season 3 with a well-played red herring in the Kreese Vietnam flashback arc with Ponytail (Seth Kemp). Just like Steven Seagal, Silver is known for his ponytail, but in ‘Nam flashback, young Silver (Nick Marini) had yet to adopt the hairstyle affectation. Now we know it is in honor of his fallen comrade. Last May, in the wake of season 3, Netflix released the teaser “Terry Silver Returns”, which also focused on that signature ponytail.
Silver levels up Cobra Kai even more. He taught Daniel in Karate Kid Part III as a ruse, setting him up to fall at the All Valley Karate Tournament against ‘Karate’s Bad Boy’ Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan). Unlike most of the original Karate Kid cinematic cast, Griffith and Kanan were genuine martial arts masters prior to joining the franchise. The real question here is whether Barnes reappears in season 4.
The other tantalizing clue in the new teaser is Kreese annoying Amanda (Courtney Henggeler). She has been the voice of reason throughout Cobra Kai, a strangely sober counterpoint to her husband Daniel despite all the wine she drinks. However, Kreese has managed to get under her skin in season 3. As a master manipulator, he has learned how to push Amanda’s buttons, triggering her mama bear instincts when it comes to protecting Sam (Mary Mouser) and making her do something rash and regrettable.
Whatever may come in season 4, we know it’s not the end. Cobra Kai season 5 is starting production in Atlanta this fall.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Cobra Kai season 4 comes to Netflix on December 31, 2021.

Following my Pre-Planning post…We’re 30-ish days from DragonCon, and this may be your first year going! Never to fret, Dragon is the most nerd-friendly place! Get ready to hang out with 77,000+ of your closest (new) friends!
Labor Day weekend in Atlanta is busy – and HOT. There are several things going on in town that weekend, and with these tricks you’ll do just fine.
1 – Pre-Plan: That’s right, pre-plan. I know I said it before. You should already be doing this. You should also start taking Vitamin C supplements (you’ll read why further down). By now you should have your room situation taken care of and your badge purchased. If not, you still can or you can get them online for $140 (until 8/17, then they’re $160 online). Tickets are $140 on site so do not buy it at the higher price!!! Also if you’re doing celeb photos, you should pre-pay them online from Epic Photo Ops. I believe they do on-site sales as well.
If you’re driving, you should already go ahead and scope out what parking lots are around the con on-line. They can range from $3/day (uncovered) to garages that are $18/day (covered), and even hotel parking which I do NOT recommend, as it’s $30-35/day and that’s just crazy. All of the hotels have a service where you can unload your gear and have it set aside in the lobby while you go find parking.
If you’re flying, check out what route on the MARTA you need to take and if you’re having someone meet you at the airport, schedule your meetups.
Atlanta also currently uses Uber and Lyft, but watch out for Uber surge pricing.
Success!
2 – Pack: Packing is essential. Veterans have become masters of suitcase and car-tetris. With as many costumes as some of us bring, it’s vital. In the past I’ve written a short packing list that you can check out. I recommend packing short sleeves and shorts, jeans, and COMFORTABLE SHOES as your mundane clothes. You don’t have to go outside normally, but there is programming in both the Westin and Sheraton that you have to walk to (as in not via skybridge). It’s only a couple of blocks for either. Same goes for the Vendor Hall and Gaming, which are now located in the AmericasMart across the street from the Hyatt.
3 – Arrival: You made it! Now you need to meet up with your room holder (unless that’s you), and get your stuff up to your room. Take a few minutes, relax, BREATHE. Shenanigans are already happening (and do 24/7 pretty much). Unpack, get a nap in (you’ll need it), get some food.
Now that you’re at DragonCon, you’ll need to be aware of some things….
Realize that you’re going to stand in some lines at some point. That’s okay! Big celebrity panels tend to form huge lines (as do the masquerade and puppet slam). Line up for those as early as DragonCon staff will let you. All panel rooms are cleared after each one, so you can’t just park in a room all day. It’s not fair to others who wait in line.
Bonus: Most big name panels and the masquerade are broadcast on DragonCon TV in the host hotels, so you can avoid it altogether if you just want to watch it in your room.
Bonus 2: You can meet new people in line. People you obviously have at least one common interest with.
Learn your way around. DragonCon is HUGE and it’s easy to get lost. The con is spread out over five hotels, which are:
Hyatt Regency Atlanta – 265 Peachtree Street NE
Marriott Marquis Atlanta – 265 Peachtree Center Avenue
Hilton Atlanta – 255 Courtland Street NE
Sheraton Atlanta Hotel – 165 Courtland Street
Westin Peachtree Plaza – 210 Peachtree Street
The Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt all connect to each other via skybridges. You can also reach the Peachtree Center food court through the Hyatt and Marriott.
Pick up your badge. Badge pickup is located in the Sheraton. DragonCon staff have had their stuff together and for the last few years it’s been pretty speedy. If you have your barcoded postcard, bring it! If you need to purchase a badge, be ready with your ID and money. If you’ve lost your postcard, that’s okay too. Just be ready with a Photo ID. DragonCon has posted an article with the process and the hours of operation here.
Plan a schedule. You can pick up a program at the end of registration. It lists all of the events and panels that are going on. They should also be in the app (you can download in the Play Store or App Store). Just keep in mind you’ll probably change this up a bit.
Find the ConSuite! It’s open 24 hours, and they provide snacks (and SPAM) and beverages to all convention goers!
They are located in the Hyatt in rooms 223 and 226.
Check out the food court. Seriously, you have to eat. Make time for that. The food court provides a LOT of options, including:
Cafe Momo
Chick-fil-A
Metro Cafe Diner (24 hours!!!)
Moe’s Southwest Grill
And so many more! Check out this link to find out what all is available: Peachtree Center Food Court
Personally, I recommend Café Momo for breakfast and dinner as they cost by weight and you can get SO MUCH FOOD for a decent price. They also have gluten free options.
There’s also a 24 hour CVS, and you will make at least two trips there. Just saying.
What events are must-see? DragonCon is enormous and it is impossible to see everything you want to, whether it is your first con or you are an eternal member. However there are many events which should be seen at least once (and preferably your first year, because you may want to participate the next!)
The Parade (10am Saturday). With over 3,000 participants, this one is a must-see for everyone.
DragonCon Night at the Georgia Aquarium (7-11pm Saturday). You have to do this at least once! They close the aquarium early to the public, and then reopen for a night of costumed fun. You get to visit this amazing attraction with FAR LESS crowds than a normal day. It is simply breathtaking, and the photos that come from this are to die for.
The Masquerade (8pm Sunday, Hyatt). Most people will watch in overflow locations, or on DC*TV from their rooms as this event fills up very quickly.
4 – Have fun, but be responsible: It’s hotter than hell in Atlanta (Hello, Satan’s buttcrack!), so hydration is super important! There are water fountains in the hotels so I recommend bringing a refillable water bottle.
Remember the rule of 4, 2, 1…
4+ hours of sleep per night
2+ meals a day
1+ shower per day – with warm water and soap. Axe bodyspray does not count as a shower. Seriously, no one likes con funk. Don’t be nasty.
Pretty much how Con Crud feels…
Don’t accept drinks from strangers. Most people are there to have fun and it’s harmless, but there’s always the risk of someone putting something in a drink. Also, you don’t want to share drinks with people because you’ll end up with Con Crud. That’s right. There’s always someone sick there and it’ll spread like wildfire. No one wants a week long cold right after being on a week-long trip. Just be smart. Also, this is why you should start taking Vitamin C supplements a month ahead if you don’t already.
Know your limits. As adults, we’re all going to have fun and probably partake in adult beverages, but don’t get so wasted that you’re puking everywhere and what not. Be smart.
Be courteous to people in general – costumed or not. Don’t pull on someone’s Proton Pack, prop, or piece of a costume…and don’t be a creeper on someone in costume. Sexual harassment is never okay.
Follow the Law of Wheaton – Don’t be a dick!
Allow disabled people onto the elevators first. They have no other option to get upstairs, you do.
Follow the rules of the con. They’re printed on the back of your badge.
Make memories! That’s why we’re all here – to have a great time!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I can’t wait til DragonCon and I hope to see you there!!
Surviving DragonCon – 2018 Edition Following my Pre-Planning post...We’re 30-ish days from DragonCon, and this may be your first year going! Never to fret, Dragon is the most nerd-friendly place!

They are no longer relegated to camping and fishing expeditions, in many urban scenes tactical folding and pocket knives with jagged edges with short and long blades appear "when a weapon is not an appropriate means of self defense".
Assaults
Fearing the assaults and assaults of a well-armed population, city dwellers from all walks of life are turning to the latest designs of high-tech survival knives. Compact and easy to hide, ergonomically shaped, offering a simple one-handed movement to instantly reveal a potentially lethal blade, the new generation of pocket knives offers lethal potentials to whomever ends up on the wrong side of the handle.
When a tactical knife
When a tactical knife becomes an illegal weapon like knives? Like blade designs, support laws are complex and define restrictions, but offer opportunities for designers to enter "empty" areas. A táct ounce tactical blade requires the slightest "manual" movement to free your 1 ½ inch punched blade. A shifting blade, even when opened more slowly than non-regulated legal tactical knives, is defined in the law of the 1950s as a weapon that requires a design element of the trigger button. Press the button and the blade jumps to open the positions, hence the name of switchblade.
Design and use of origins - Tactical knives. There is no doubt that the origins of the pocket tactical knives of the 21st century are in the tradition of combat weapon design. Key attributes? Lightweight, easy to hide, blade length with optional serrated edge or perforated finish to transmit maximum damage.
Operation with one hand. While law enforcement officers see any knife as a pending crime, people who walk, swim, sail, make temporary repairs to the equipment to appreciate the ease of use. One-hand operation to open and close allows fast repair work to be completed safely. And, yes, self-defense may require that unique response in life where they attack you and you can only use one hand to locate and then hook your tactical knife against a bad guy.
Tactical pocket knives - Weight and length. The ergonomic handle plus the blade usually measures 4 inches or less, while weighing about 6 ounces or less. The blades are available in steel, light titanium, straight edge or serrated edge. There are even plastic-assisted opening knives that are easy to hide, but offer cutting performance equal to the job of cutting meat or even light wood.
Brands And Prices. Most major brands produce designs in the tactical pocket segment, which produce annual sales of more than $ 1 billion. The entry knives in this segment can cost $ 20, while some brands have a price of $ 140 or more. The main manufacturers and their distributors in line or of bricks and mortar include Handmade Damascus Pocket Knives, Case, Cold Steel, Masters of Defense and others.
Legal issues - virtually unregulated. State and municipal laws remain uneven, so the expanding market for tactical knives will continue without regulation. Individual cities like Atlanta have a legal limit of 2 inches, but that has not stopped tactical knives "legally allowed" from becoming the weapon of choice in well-publicized homicide investigations.
Small survival knives
Survival knives are truly one of the most powerful outdoor "tools" available. I think, in fact, that they are the most important piece of your outdoor equipment. The word "survival" really applies because a survival knife really helps in its survival outdoors. Whether you're hunting, fishing, camping or backpacking in the bush, a survival knife is as essential to your survival as anything else. Preparing in the best possible way is the first act we perform in this search for survival. Now, I'm not talking about trying to go out and win a war. The mere fact of going outside with the right "tools" allows you to have the confidence that if things happen you are prepared. I do not have to recite the Boy Scout creed here, right?
Going camping
Going camping is one of the best ways to spend a vacation or just get away from it all. Being outside in nature is a good therapy for anyone. I think if you wear several survival knives it will really help you have fun. It's not just about survival, it's about having the right survival knives to do all the work that is done. If you are preparing a place to camp, a "Handmade Damascus Steel Folding Pocket Knife" is a perfect knife to help with this. They can be balanced quite easily. It was designed to reduce the thick brushes in the forest, so this will help make a good clear to establish a place to camp. Now there are new versions of the machete on the market that are more multi functional and are made to divide the kindling, they are used as an ax and they also do everything a conventional machete can do.

The Steel Woods – Straw in the Wind
Southern rock often goes overlooked in mainstream or music criticism circles, which is why bands like The Steel Woods will probably never have the widespread followings they deserve. Bands of this ilk either get lumped in with country (and subsequently written off by people who don’t like country) or compared endlessly to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band, as if no southern rock bands have existed since. But the past few years have been nothing but healthy for southern rock, bringing great albums from new artists (A Thousand Horses, Whiskey Myers, Cadillac Three, Blackberry Smoke) and old standbys alike (the ever-reliable Drive By Truckers). Even Chris Stapleton has more than a little bit of the southern rock sound in his DNA. The Steel Woods add their name to that list with their stellar debut album, the recently-released Straw in the Wind. Blending influences from half a dozen genres—including blues, gospel, down-home country, rock ‘n’ roll, and even a little dash of metal—The Steel Woods sound more seasoned, versatile, and assured on this sprawling 13-song collection than you would normally expect from a debut act. (Though they do have a previous four-song EP under their belt.) The band’s wheelhouse is dark, atmospheric rock ‘n’ roll, like the slow-burning opener “Axe” or the gospel-tinged “Let the Rain Come Down,” a song that appeared in a more acoustic-oriented arrangement on last year’s debut album from singer/songwriter Brent Cobb. Foreboding and thrilling, these songs carry an almost apocalyptic glint to them, which makes for a hell of a lot of fun. However, despite their southern rock leanings, The Steel Woods also have the hooks and songs on this record to potentially make a splash as a mainstream-leaning country band. Two years ago, A Thousand Horses—with the assistance of super-producer Dave Cobb behind the boards—notched a number one country hit with their aching, melodic power ballad “Smoke.” Their debut album, Southernality, blended sheeny country music with gritty southern rock in such a way that they found mainstream traction where many louder and more boisterous southern rock acts missed it. The Steel Woods, to be fair, are darker and more complex than A Thousand Horses. That much is evident from hard-rock-influenced tracks like “Better in the Fall” and “Hole in the Sky,” or from the rollicking honky-tonk murder tale of “Della Jane’s Heart”—a song that twists the usual “murder ballad” narrative by having the woman put the man in the ground for a change. But buried in the heart of this album are four or five songs that do melodic country rock as well as just about any band working today. If there’s a “Smoke” in the bunch, it’s “If I’m Gonna Love You,” an acoustic-led anthem inexplicably buried in the track eight position. In the 1990s, the big radiant hook and the ripping guitar solo would have slotted this track right in between Counting Crows and Sister Hazel on the mainstream rock radio dial. Nowadays, songs like this don’t have a prayer of touching rock or pop radio, but “If I’m Gonna Love You” could easily find some life on the country side of the dial. 1990s Counting Crows is also a fair point of comparison for “Uncle Lloyd,” another of the more country-leaning tracks from Straw in the Wind. Like the best southern rock, this track cultivates a feeling of time, place, and character that is very real. “He was not my father’s brother/But he wished that he could be/Told us kids to call him uncle/We would be his family/He had a wife and kids in Fresno/The youngest one was 24/Daddy brought him into our house/They didn’t want him anymore.” In the space of a verse, frontman Wes Bayliss sets the stage for a bittersweet story—one of love and newfound family connection on one side and heartbreak and the loss of a family on the other. The other big gem is “If We Never Go,” which plays the “escapist anthem” role for this record. Just about every country-leaning album will have a song in that category, but “If We Never Go” feels unique, thanks to the details in the lyrics and the contemplative ache of the melody. The song plays out as one side of a conversation between a boy and a girl, as the guy tries to convince the girl to run away with him. It’s a classic Springsteen ideal, but the song doesn’t flub on the storytelling just because we know exactly what kind of song we’re getting. “Kiss your daddy bye, he raised his daughter well/If we don’t leave right now, Atlanta will be hell/It’s too dang bad your mom can’t come out for a hug/But you know how she gets with that broomstick on that rug,” Bayliss sings in the first verse. And in the second verse, he adds “I’ve been mowing lawns since 1998/I’ve finally saved enough, let’s bust out of this gate.” These details add nuance, yearning, and urgency to the song, while Bayliss’s vocals, steeped in wistfulness, and some evocative guitarwork from Jason “Rowdy” Cook, round out the bittersweet edges. With a lot of talent for a lot of different types of songs, The Steel Woods have the potential to make some truly masterful records in the future. Whether they go further in the country direction, go all-in on their blistering southern rock roots, or continue to mix the two into a unique palette of sound, they’ve clearly got a lot to offer as a band. That’s a major testament to the strength of the playing and songwriting on Straw in the Wind, because few debut albums from the last few years have offered such a thorough display of promise, or hinted at so many intriguing directions. Don’t let these guys become the best-kept secret of 2017. --- Please consider supporting us so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/review/the-steel-woods-straw-in-the-wind/

If not, you still can or you can get them online for $140 (until 8/16, then they’re $160 online).
They can range from $3/day (uncovered) to garages that are $18/day (covered), and even hotel parking which I do NOT recommend, as it’s $30-40/day and that’s just crazy.
Noodle Cafe

I can’t wait til DragonCon and I hope to see you there!!

The Notorious B.I.G.: Ready to Die
New York City doesn’t sell drugs anymore. Sure, there are bike messengers that peddle weed packed in plastic jars and Russian mobsters who launder money through Coney Island auto-shops, but the kind of trap-house, dope-boy, Robin Hood archetype that still carries in cities like Atlanta has been wiped clean from tri-state folklore. This is undoubtedly a good thing—entrepreneurial city teens today hustle fashion trends to ogling editors instead of baggies to scraggly addicts. But the shift has fossilized a certain kind of rap album, like The Notorious B.I.G.’s debut Ready to Die, released in 1994. The lawlessness it describes—robberies at gunpoint on the A train, open-air hand-to-hand crack deals on Fulton St., shootouts with the NYPD—land unfathomably to most New Yorkers today. Young transplants and natives alike would rather hear old tall tales than experience anything near it firsthand; distinct from nostalgia, it's more like moving into a home where a murder occurred. The thrill is a combination of fear and gall, rooted in the security that the scene will likely never repeat itself.
But there may be something habitual in New York’s craned gaze backward. Note that B.I.G. opened Ready to Die by complaining about changes in the city around him over 20 years ago. Even then, the album was a reflection: an over-the-top, fisheye union address of the city’s waning crack era, and a reeling admission that something must have gone terribly wrong for it to have happened. Its intro maps B.I.G’s life against the sounds of various eras—’70s “Superfly,” ‘80s “Top Billin’,” and ‘90s Doggystyle—before the 21-year-old launches into “Things Done Changed,” an opening monologue that sets the chaotic scene. Life used to be about funny hairstyles, curbside games, and lounging at barbecues, he says, but “Turn your pagers to 1993,” and the story has taken an inexplicably dark turn. It goes unmentioned here, but hip-hop’s region of choice had changed too: New York’s first generation of rap inventors had given way to the West Coast, so it’s Dr. Dre’s voice we hear between verses, dispatching from Compton. “Things done changed on this side,” the sample declares, a savvy appropriation that characterized a rise in violence across coasts, and a shift in sound that B.I.G. hoped to correct.
In 1992, “a whole lot of niggas want[ed] Big to make a demo tape.” He’d been battling around Fulton St since he was 13, and was known in Bedford-Stuyvesant as a force, in music and otherwise. The demo he recorded, “Microphone Murderer,” along with a few other cuts, made it’s way to The Source’s Unsigned Hype column, then influential in hip-hop’s walled off media environment, and then to Bad Boy, where Sean “Puffy” Combs would sign him. But as the demo’s opening line specified, it was only at the nudging of his close friends that he pursued music—B.I.G. was splitting time between Brooklyn and Raleigh, where he’d set up a profitable drug operation. When his record advance didn’t land quickly enough, he went back to N.C. to pick up the slack, and Puffy called him, alternately begging and demanding the rapper stop hustling and return to New York, devoted to music for good. The day that he left, the Raleigh house he’d operated out of was raided by police officers.
What made Christopher Wallace pop-palatable amid such a gruesome backdrop was his humor, personality, and wit. He was a gruff, neurotic alternative to the ice-cool Snoop Dogg: if Snoop had bitches in the living room till six in the morning, B.I.G. was getting paged at 5:46, wiping cold out his eye. If Cali crossed over with low-rider funk from Parliament, New York would ride on block-party boogie from Mtume. And if taut flows were giving way to languid hooks, B.I.G. would tighten everyone back up. “Unbelievable” was the antithesis of “Juicy,” a love-letter to underground rap radio shows like Stretch & Bobbito, and to anyone with an oversized Land Cruiser (another change to consider—New Yorkers used to drive). “Those that rushes my clutches get put on crutches, get smoked like dutches, from the master”; you can hear the roots of “punchline rap” forming in Big’s puns and internal rhyme, and the ironic turns of phrase that kids like Cam’ron would intensify years later: “‘I thought he was wack!’—Oh come, come, now, why y’all so dumb now?”
At the time, the album was praised for its honest portrayal of the drug dealer’s internal conflicts, as opposed to sunny glorification of gang violence imported from L.A. Songs like “Everyday Struggle” and “Suicidal Thoughts” showed Big’s depth, frequent references to his mother showed his rearing, and casual dropping of words like “placenta” showed his coy love of language. B.I.G. was a smart kid that had (or liked) to do dumb things, the record suggested, itself a comment on the how genius gets sharpened when faced with obstacles, and an affirmation of rap as a platform for such genius to be realized, and monetized.
Despite its author’s youth, Ready To Die shows its age with its production. The beats already paled in comparison to the high-definition score of Life After Death, B.I.G.’s follow up album, and the tinny drums and swampy samples on tracks like “Me and My Bitch” and “Respect” probably played better on cassette than they do on Apple Music. At the time of the album’s release, more nimble producers were doing interesting work on neighboring albums—one could say Illmatic dried everyone in New York up of their best material. The major tracks on Ready to Die had to be heavy-handed, and the filler was just an excuse to hear Big keep rapping. “Big Poppa” was inseparable from Ron Isley’s “Between the Sheets” and snuck in a trendy, post-regional synth line that would perk up West Coast ears. The “One More Chance” remix became a smash crossover hit; the original included on the album is expectedly disposable. Even strong exhibitions of songwriting like “The What” or “Gimme the Loot”—one a duet with Method Man, the other with himself—are weighed down by loops from Easy Mo Bee, a dated producer who Puffy might’ve been smart to have axed shortly after.
Which brings us to the true triumph in Ready to Die—Sean Combs, who’s been able to spot a dollar hidden in the most unlikely places ever since, finds proof-of-concept for New York hip-pop that can carry from street corners to school dances, with the right sonic contexts, visual branding, and occasional ad-libs, a formula he’d apply to Mase, Shyne, and his own material thereafter. The sounds may have shifted, but the thesis remains: drug dealers have stories for days, and Americans want to hear them. We revere the salesman more than the politician, and B.I.G. could sell the hell out of the life he lived. Maybe not all that much has changed after all.
