Jackass: The Movie (2002)

To give some background, I had spent years building up to this by performing all sorts of stupid and painful stunts making skate videos with my brother and mates, plus we were already big fans of CKY so Jackass was very familiar territory. We went en masse and I dread to think what stupid things we decided to do on the way home. That Christmas, my mum bought me one of the few black T-shirts I ever liked, with the chest X-ray showing the toy car inserted into Ryan Dunn (RIP). Perfect for Halloween.

Aside from jumping off or into anything we could find, I think the silliest thing I did ‘for the good of the film’ was probably, after hanging on the back of a mate’s brother’s motorbike on my skateboard, obviously going too fast and coming off, the first thing I thought to do with my freshly skinned palms was to pour vinegar on the wounds to ‘clean’ them. A close second is firing an industrial staple gun into my own hip, although nobody was filming so who’s to say it even happened.

Brandon DeCamillo was probably the funniest on the original videos but I don’t think he enjoyed the limelight and seemed to step back as Jackass got bigger. I felt a little sorry for Ehren McGhehey, who looked like he was kind of bullied in an under the radar but under your nose way. He seemed like a sensitive soul desperate for approval, and perhaps unconsciously preferred to be the butt of the jokes as long as he was part of the group. If it was about insecurity or lack of confidence, it’s worth remembering that the show’s rockstar-like leads, Bam and Johnny Knoxville, or Brandon and Philip, weren’t even secure in themselves enough to use their real names. I guess ‘Hi, I’m Philip John Clapp. Welcome to Jackass’ doesn’t have the same ring to it.

When I previously wrote about benshi—the live narrators that would contextualize (and, on occasion, totally reinterpret) the silent images onscreen in the nascent days of film exhibition in Japan—in my review of Masayuki Suo’s Talking the Pictures, I never imagined that I would eventually have the opportunity to actually see one perform in person; after all, the advent of the talkie essentially rendered the profession irrelevant and obsolete. There are, however, a dedicated few working tirelessly to preserve the increasingly rare art, several of whom recently showcased their talents at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The selection of movies screened for the demonstration was as eclectic as it was remarkable: The Dull Sword, an animated short (featuring both hand-drawn frames and paper cutouts reminiscent of Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed) about a bloodthirsty samurai constantly thwarted and humiliated by hubris; The Oath of the Sword, a newly rediscovered romantic melodrama starring a predominantly Asian-American cast; and The Vindictive Snake, a moody tale of ghostly vengeance (which owes an obvious thematic debt to Yotsuya Kaidan) set in the ramshackle sugar plantations of Hawaii and the seedy brothels of Okinawa. Surprisingly, amidst these obscure treasures, the true gem of the program was a widely available Hollywood classic: Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant; Kumiko Omori’s energetic delivery—replete with cartoonish voice acting and charmingly silly sound effects (a squeaky toy, for example, was utilized to approximate the noise of hiccups)—enriched and elevated the familiar plot and gags, adding a fresh layer to the comedic tone. Not to disrespect or underestimate the skills of her fellow benshi, of course; Ichiro Kataoka and Hideyuki Yamashiro each displayed his own distinctive style and flavor. Indeed, the trio’s cooperative rendition of Masao Inoue’s 1916 adaptation of Not Blood Relations (or what little remains of it, anyway; like far too many productions of that era, it currently exists only in fragmentary form) was an impressive feat of theatrical collaboration.

Purchasing the ticket for The Art of the Benshi (a $20 expense that feels pretty darn substantial in the aftermath of the SAG and WGA strikes) was an extremely spontaneous decision on my part—one that I second-guessed during every excruciating moment of my forty-minute-long subway ride to the venue. Fortunately, I needn’t have fretted; the most memorable cinematic experience of 2024 was well worth the relatively paltry price of admission.

I feel crazy for not noticing it the first two times but I just rewatched Venom for the third time because I wanted to have ice cream and I only just realised that the symbiote's voice does change when they're in Anne? Which. Canonically the space goo don't have the same genders as humans. Like okay yeah Venom does correct Eddie on being a who not a what but I don't think they say they're a he not an it? I'm not rewatching it another time to check so this is just me being insane publicly but like. Eddie just assumes Venom is a guy and Venom doesn't say anything but Venom only has a guy voice because Eddie has a guy voice. When they're in Anne they have Anne's voice. Riot has Drake's voice (btw originally I thought Riot was a "girl"? I don't know for a second when they first appear their voice didn't strike me as super masculine like Venom's does and I was like "oh cool a "girl" symbiote neat" and then they weren't, it was just Riz Ahmed's voice + the effects) Anyways this works well with what I like for Venom's pronouns so it's cool. It's just both really normal and full of sense but also strangely thoughtful for a super hero movie, kinda like Eddie not getting Anne back. It's logical but you stop expecting it when you don't see it happening. I noticed something else but I forgot what it is? I like that Eddie is just the kinda guy who gives zero fucks about looking weird from the start. Like when Skirth is "stalking" him he just talks to her out loud when it's not obvious she's there and some guy gives him a weird look but he completely ignores it. He's not using earphones and pretending to be on a call to talk to Venom not because it just hasn't occured to him but because he doesn't care about looking insane most of the time I guess? Still regret that we don't get an explanation in there of how Venom survives though that would be interesting. OH RIGHT the other observation was that Venom says they're a loser on their planet too but doesn't elaborate, and I love the idea that it's because the Klyntar see any kind of a good relationship with your host as a weird thing, kinda like the Hutts think humanoids aren't hot and Jabba is a weirdo for liking Twi'leks. Obviously "they're a loser because they're the equivalent of a sappy romantic" is great. But also I love how when the guys are waiting for Eddie at the elevator doors and they decide to shoot him and their leader says "mask" and the guys says "copy" Eddie says "mask" and Venom goes "copy" and then bam kicking ass. Like. That's cool in a movie right? But also you KNOW Eddie thought that was a good one-liner and he must've looked really cool, which doesn't strike me as loser as much as just being a bit of a nerd - but Venom joined in right? So. Nerd. And Klyntar don't strike me as fans of nerds. So. Loser. But also the romantic bit clearly. I don't know listen I just have brainrot they moved in and they're not paying rent and the thoughts need to go somewhere outside my head since they're taking up so much space!!

"Of course. Make yourself at home." Grace gave Bam a few pats on the back before pulling away and making his way to the kitchen to wash the dishes. "Is there anything you would like to do in the meantime, Bam?"

Gyetang overheard Grace's raised voice from across the room. "You're welcome to join me, cluck! The game is more fun with multiple players."

The offer seemed to pique Bam's interest. Bam looked at Grace with twinkling eyes, as if searching for approval that he shouldn't need to ask for. Grace returned with a nod and a warm smile, knowing very well that at this point Bam hadn't gotten the luxury of being able to play games, let alone with a friend.

After putting the dishes to dry, Grace rummaged through the kitchen cabinet to find some salty crackers. He put them on a tray along with the juice and a bottle of water. Before going into his dorm, he cast one last glance at Bam and Gyetang. "I will be back for lunch. Just knock if you need me."

Why?

I mean seriously, if you have access to such an iconic figure in cinema, arguably the first proper character to be animated and have a personality, why make only horror movies and gore fests with it?

It's the low hanging fruit, also it's really funny to me how these movies were ready to drop the moment Mickey Mouse was about to enter public domain. This means these movies were made several months in advance. I'm sure there's an argument for a lawsuit in there somewhere.

How about this for an idea? Mickey Mouse escapes his drawing prison and goes to see the situation with cinema these days. He sees how terrible everything is, and decides to go back to his drawings, because nothing brings him comfort like the past...not realizing he's doing exactly what so many creatives do with their movies. Bam! Actual mature themes touched, and you didn't need to splatter them in blood to achieve so.
