Hand-Carved Heart

Pt. 2 of this post

They found it by accident one day a few months after their search began; they had stopped a couple miles into their hike through a new part of the woods to rest and admire the small waterfall they had come upon. Bella sat on a large boulder to catch her breath and to rub some of the tightness out of her legs, Jacob of course was looking for a way to get up to the top of the waterfall. She cautioned him to not try and use some sketchy looking vine as a climbing rope and he tossed back a joke about her being the klutz in this relationship. Bella’s responding laughter had come so easily.

She could still remember how heavy she used to feel all the time having to put forth so much effort into thinking about every reaction, giving just enough of a smile so people wouldn’t worry. Then Jacob came along with his warmth and his crooked grin that made her feel lighter than air, only the feel of his hand in hers or the deep vibrato of his voice kept her feet safely planted on the ground. Being with him just felt as simple and easy as breathing.

After the soreness in her calves was mostly gone she joined him at the edge of the waterfall, it really wasn’t very large, only about 15-20 feet and with Jacob’s tall stature he wouldn’t have any trouble making his way to the top. Still that didn’t stop Bella from worrying, but because of her disregard for her own personal safety a few months prior she kept her worries to herself and instead began skimming her hand along the wall of green that crept up the cliff-face. The light scrape of rock and leaves against her hand was a decent enough distraction until her hand fell through a gap.

Weird. She thought to herself, curiosity bubbling in the pit of her stomach. She pushed aside a mass of greenery to peer through it, and there tucked neatly behind the wall of trees and bushes was a beautiful moss covered clearing. It was small, only about 6 feet in diameter, and the densely packed trees lining the perimeter provided a canopy of leaves above that sprinkled the light across the ground through the small gaps between the branches. A thick layer of moss covered every inch of the ground including what appeared to be the fallen trunk of a large tree. It was everything they had been looking for. She called Jake over so they could venture in together.

They made their way through the foliage into the center of the glade, both with large smiles spread across their faces. The vivid green that coated every bit of the clearing had made it feel so bright and alive, even with the shade provided by the canopy above. They couldn’t believe they had found a place so perfect to call their own.

Jacob pulled out the map and marked the location of the waterfall with a small heart as Bella cleared a portion of moss off the bark of the fallen tree so she could sit down. As she brushed away the moss an odd mark on the log caught her eye, a heart with two initials and a date was carved deeply into the wood. She smiled and called out that it looked like someone else had already beaten them to this little love-nest. Intrigued, he came to look at what she was talking about. When he saw what was carved into the wood his face paled and tears welled up in the corner of his dark brown eyes. BB+SW 1975 was marked into the bark, clearly having been carved over repeatedly to set it so deeply that even after so many years it remained.

Bella rubbed at his back confused at his reaction, but knowing that once he calmed down he would tell her. For now she would just comfort him in anyway he needed like he had always done for her. It was her turn to be his rock to lean on and she was determined to be as strong and sure as he had always been even though it killed her to see him so clearly in pain. She drew idle circles into his back and the slow drag of her hand made it easier for Jacob to slow his breathing and steady himself. After several minutes he finally stopped tracing the outline and turned to look back at Bella. This was where my dad asked my mom to be his girlfriend… Bella was stunned, not expecting that to be the reason. She remained quiet though, letting Jacob tell the story at his own pace.

When I was little, I always asked my mom to tell me about their first date as a bedtime story. They were in high school, she was a year younger than him, but they had been friends since they were kids. My dad had finally gotten the courage to ask her out, though she had no clue it was a date because he had acted so nonchalant about it. I asked him about that later and he said he was just trying to act cool because he was so nervous. Jacob chuckled softly and shook his head.

When she showed up and he told her they were going on a hike through the woods she was certain that she would just have to try her best and get over her crush on him. Then dad led her to a beautiful waterfall, and next to it under a large tree he had laid out a picnic blanket held down with a basket filled with new art supplies for her. When she turned to look back at him he was holding a slightly crushed bouquet of hand picked wildflowers that he had apparently been carrying in his bag the whole time. He smiled wistfully, remembering the way his mother’s face lit up when she told this story.

She said it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her, and when he asked her to be his girlfriend she answered by finding a sharp rock and carving their initials and the year into the tree they had been laying under. Every time they came back here they would go over it so it would never fade… I guess the tree finally fell over and new plants grew in its place, hiding it away… I can’t believe we found this place Bells, I-I never even thought to look for it, thought it would be too sad…

Jacob leaned into Bella’s side and she wrapped her arms around him. That was the most she had ever heard him talk about his mom, she never wanted to pry by asking for more whenever Sarah was mentioned in conversation by either Charlie or Billy. Though she did have a faint memory of her from her visits as a child, a beautiful woman with deep set lines around her mouth from the toothy and slightly slanted grin she always seemed to wear. Jacob had that same smile.

He finally lifted his head from her chest and Bella wiped the remnants of tears from his cheeks. He offered her a faint smile as a thank you and she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. They sat in silence for a couple more minutes before Jacob spoke again, saying that finding this spot felt like fate, like his mom was looking down on him and giving them her blessing. Bella blinked away a tear at that and nodded, promising that they could come back here whenever he wanted.

The next time they came to the little clearing hidden away from the world, Jacob brought some of his carving knives to make something to bring back for his dad and Bella brought one of her favorite books to read. They sat in the calm of the forest, her back against the trunk of the tree with Jacob sitting next to her whittling away at a chunk of wood, the rush of water and the rustling of leaves as the wind blew keeping them company.

They stayed for several hours, occasionally taking a break from their respective activities to kiss lazily, sometimes Bella would read aloud as Jacob carved. When the sun began to set they packed up their belongings, as they were about to leave Jacob paused and turned back to the tree, he pulled out one of his carving knives and added their initials right next to his parents. Bella pulled him into a tight hug, she couldn’t believe she was lucky enough to love this boy and have him love her back.

When Bella first moved to Forks she couldn't stand how green everything was, she was so accustomed to the brown desert of Arizona that the emerald colored town was like an assault on her eyes. It was somehow too bright yet unbelievably dreary, like the constant clouds had sucked the life out of the place and the foliage was overcompensating. She used to miss the way the heat waves danced across the gravel lawns, and how the sun's consistent presence felt like an old friend greeting her every morning letting her know she wasn't alone. But here with Jacob, her new sun, in this small section of the woods; green might just be her new favorite color.

I understand that you’re busy and stuff so don’t rush to get this done, but I’d love to see more of Pastel being afraid of Orfeu. Maybe Farlan and Orfeu have weekly check up sessions just so Orfeu can make sure that Farlan is behaving himself? I can imagine every time Orfeu comes over, Pastel is fearful that that Master is going to let Orfeu use those sharp teeth and nails on him and BB.

Pastel knew very well what their Master bringing friends over meant for a pet. It marked an exhausting day, of trying to attend to the demands not only of your known, usual tormentor, but of many unknown faces that were often just as cruel as your Master, and often, enable and encouraged each other to be crueler.

This Master… Barely gave them any time to get used to the new home, before bringing guests over. He probably wanted to show off his new purchase – two little pets, from this famous Pet trainer… Pastel shivered. Their life here, no matter how lavish the apartment, would be one of misery, he could feel.

What he was not expecting is for BB to have already met that man before. Master’s friend, called Orfeu, who, to his horror, Master Farlan stated would likely pet-sit for them with some frequency.

“It’s Blue’s owner” BB smiled at him, whispering with excitement, as they waited on the floor “Master knows Blue’s owner!”

“Is he?” Pastel asked, shivering. Pastel wasn’t sure if it was worse to be babysat by someone who had previous experience with pets or not.

…When the man approached, Pastel wanted to run and hide. There was something… Off about him. Eyes that had a color a bit too green, a solid shade that did not belong on someone’s irises. He smelled… like fresh pine trees, with a vague, vague undertone of leaves rotting and moss growing… The smell of being lost on a dark forest. And his gaze was a fucking dead end. He stared through them, around them behind them. Everything but at them, searching the nothing as if there was something there.

Pastel wasn’t sure if he was being paranoid, or if somehow, all of this flew over BB’s head due to their excitement of meeting Blue’s owner! But there was no way BB missed the teeth, right?

Pastel’s dreams were often abstract and weird – and they were always terrible and frightening in their nosense – but among the usual chaos, he started to recognize that set of teeth and sharp, perfect nails.

He wondered what Master thought about it. It wasn’t normal, not even for humans, to have teeth like that. Master didn’t seem concerned, in fact, he was almost affectionate towards that man.

Pastel had long started to dread the day they would be left alone with him or Master would allow him to hurt them. He could almost envision that man on top of him, the chains and spikes of his clothes rubbing against his skin, his nails tracing red marks, and the teeth, drawing blood.

And worse, how would that man hurt BB? His BB who naively ran up to them every time they came to visit offering him that big smile and showers of questions that the man answered, patiently. He was entertained by BB, for now. But when he got tired, when he decided he wanted to cause them pain… Shit, how would BB feel? Would they feel like they were betrayed again? Pastel wasn’t sure how many more abandonments BB could go through. But maybe BB was expecting it to happen, too. Maybe they were just… trying to make the most out of their niceness, while they could.

And now it was that day.

There he was, on his scary tall boots, harness, a spiked collar… Was that a mockery? A human, wearing a decorative collar, to show then that it wasn’t their clothes, their living conditions, or anything that made then different: It was simply that humans and pets were different?

And all those leather straps… There were so many in his clothes, and it would be so easy for him to use that to tie them up, or beat them with it. Those boots – they could so easily crush fingers, or keep someone pinned down, or just hurt when throwing a kick…

Pastel could do nothing but shiver, standing near the sofa on the living room, as Master Farlan and Orfeu chatted at the door.

“W—why you s-so scared Pastel? W-will be okay” BB smiled, sitting by his side “…S-still nervous a-about him?”

“I don’t know how can you be so calm, BB” Pastel whispered, his eyes glued on Master’s friend “He gives me the creeps…”

“H-he is nice!” BB smile broadens.

“Just because he is Blue’s Master, that doesn’t make him nice”

…BB pouts, crossing their arms.

“I, I, BB knows! BB i-isn’t stupid…” and BB shows him their tongue “He is, is being nice with BB, a-always was”

“What if he isn’t? Master was here the other times, now we’ll be alone…”

“W-will be fine!” BB insisted “BB r-recognizes p-people who are nice!”

…And that was half true because BB thought everyone was nice so… Sometimes they would get it right. But at least… at least they were calm somehow. Having BB scared wouldn’t help, either.

…BB got their hand, squeezing it.

“W-w-will be o-okay. BB knows. P-please Pastel? C-calm down?”

Pastel sighed.

“I’ll… Try. I’ll be good. Of course I will” He always was. He knew the alternative. Play by their rules… And get used to always losing, anyways.

Well, they took a deep breath. Be good. Behave. It will be okay. You will survive. BB will survive.

As he approached them, BB immediately jumped on their feet, hugging his legs. He nearly lost balance, than chuckled, and ran his finger – nails, sharp, dark, painted with red spots to symbolize blood, blood he would get from them later… - through BB’s hair.

Then the man looked at him… And Pastel flinched. He wanted to be a good pet, behave well and not cause trouble… But he flinched just from a glance. And the man smiled at that. Oh, no. He was enjoying how afraid Pastel was. He felt… He felt like he would cry, the man looking at him like a predator at its prey…

“Hey there, Pastel”

...He tried to crawl closer, to swallow all of that and pretend he wasn’t terrified – he was ashamed of being scared like this. But he couldn’t. He trembled, his arms and legs trembled, his face was pale…

“It’s alright. You don’t have to come closer, if you don’t want to”

And that was a trap. If he didn’t do it, the man would punish him. What he wanted didn’t matter at all. But the next second, the man was distracted by BB again, who was pulling him to their bedroom to show a drawing they had made of Mr. Tonsils.

He breathed in relief as they left the living room. It felt like the place was safe again. He closed his eyes, enjoying that feeling while it lasted… But then he thought he couldn’t let alone with BB! What if… What if then he tried to hurt them? He cursed himself for being so stupid and scrambled after them, peeking from the doorway.

…Nothing was happening. BB was sat by his side on the bed, flipping the pages of the notebook Master had gifted them, pointing at their drawings and looking for the man’s approval… And Orfeu was just nodding, making small comments about the drawings and entertaining BB.

After that, the man went out for a few minutes and Pastel was terrified. BB came stand by their side, seeming cheerful.

“It, it’s o-okay, t-they went g-get food…”

“Are…Are you sure?” Pastel whispered, biting the inside of his cheeks. BB pulled him closer, clumsily petting his hair.

“Y-yes. He, he w-went get p-pizza f-for u-us b-b-ecause he can’t c-cook and Master is, is p-paying anyway…” BB chuckled.

“BB… His teeth… And… And the things he wearing…”

“T-t-they look c-c-ool d-don’t they?” BB tumbled their head to the side “BB would want t-to be like that if, if BB w-wasn’t B-b-blue’s copy already…”

“…You are not ‘Blue’s copy’. You are BB, you don’t have to-”

“N-not that now P-pastel…” They whimpered, pulling away from the hug “O-only Pizza”

“If… If it’s really pizza…”

…And well, to his surprise it actually was. And they actually got to eat more than scraps, while BB and Orfeu cuddled on the sofa and Pastel just… Sat nearby. Far enough that the man couldn’t suddenly grab him, but close enough that he would be able to do something if BB was in danger… At least he hoped so.

So the time he was truly scared of came. They went to sleep. And… Nothing happened then, too. Orfeu tucked BB in, whispered a soft ‘good night’ to Pastel and went to Master Farlan’s bedroom for the night.

…After he left, Pastel felt a bit safer. He crawled in bed by BB’s side, pulling them into a hug. They had a smug smile.

“…S-see? BB knows. N-nothing bad h-happened…”

…He agreed, a bit grumpy. Still, he dreamed of teeth and nails.

ACT 1, CHAPTER 01

Small impetuous drops rumbled in the pine forest, in the silence only that continuous jingle was audible. The wood is very large and extends over an enormous arch of territory, surrounded by very high white mountains for recent snowfalls. The smell of resin, fir and musk was added to the sweet and relaxing sound of the drops falling on the pines. The landscape was wrapped in a solemn silence, the animals seeking shelter, the pine trees motionless since there was no wind. The whole expanse was colorful with various greens, from light to some dark shades. In the undergrowth, small bushes and moss reigned. On the ground only pine needles, fallen over the years. Suddenly a dazzling light, a noise rang out in the valley, the most intense rain and the amplified noises. A stream of water rushed beyond the valley and swelled visibly as the small drops increased. Namjoon was still lying on the ground, his body was too heavy and numb to allow him to stand up and seek shelter. He tried to move his head slightly to look around and to see if the others were beside him, but his neck hurt. He had taken a hit, so he stopped and closed his eyes, thinking about why he was in that place.

It all started when Yoongi saw that girl. He saw her run through the crowded streets of New York, with headphones in her ears that let out classical music. He had fallen in love with watching her play the piano, her diaphanous white fingers moved gracefully on the piano keys, while a sweet symphony echoed in the room where she was.

The second to see it was Seokjin; he saw her with several plastic bags in her hands, as she tried to go up to the fifth floor of the building. She almost fell from the cloud she was on when she saw that the girl was about to fall down the stairs when she was wrong to put her foot down but was saved by another human who was a few steps away from her. After a few minutes, he saw her enter her apartment and start putting away all the ingredients or products she needed for the home. He loved the fact that she was neat and that she loved to cook.

The third was Hoseok. He saw her while she was teaching girls ballet. Hoseok, besides the angels, had never seen such a beautiful and graceful creature. She managed to be so elegant even when the little creatures made a wrong move, she always smiled and if necessary she explained again every single move to those girls who couldn't understand or perform the exercise; but she also loved the fact that when she wanted to, she knew how to be serious and was able to put back those who did not follow her rules.

The fourth was Namjoon. He saw her walking with a bag over her shoulder in Central Park. Already the fact that the girl liked the vegetation had made the archangel's heart beat a lot. He saw her sit on a bench, and after taking a book out of her bag, start reading. He saw how she began to isolate herself, perhaps, recreating the scenes from the book in his mind. Namjoon could not help but stare at her with a smile on his face.

The fifth was Jimin, although a little hesitant in looking at a human who was not what the superiors had chosen at all. He perched on a cloud and looked at her with bored eyes. He spent several days looking at her until he understood why the others were so taken with her. Looking at her, he understood that she had a pure heart and soul, perhaps even too pure not to be an angel. He fell in love with her innocence and her smile; perhaps, he had never seen such a bright smile in all his years of service.

The sixth was Taehyung, who used the excuse of looking at the human as a moment of relax from the addict of his chosen one. He needed to breathe and to stop watching his chosen drug and slowly bring himself to death, that's why as soon as Namjoon asked who wanted to watch her, Taehyung did not think twice. He loved how the hair strands were arranged, which protruded from the tail, behind the ear, of how, when she had the chance, she went to see some art shows, or when she painted and stained, who knows how, her face.

The last but not least, at least for them, was Jungkook. The youngest of them and the newest. He had fallen in love with a nice and sunny girl like her. He loved the fact that, like him when he was still alive, she found time to play video games, train in the gym, but still managed to find space for friends. He knew that humans were running constantly. He understood that by seeing his chosen one. Single mother of two children, the ex-husband cheated on her with a colleague and gave her up in no uncertain terms, to then go to Norway with the other woman. It was something he hated. Betrayal.

The betrayal was just what he expected of all seven.

An angel heard a conversation that all seven were having and ran to one of the superiors telling him everything he had heard. They didn't even have time to rebel that in no time they were in the room where the Superiors met and discussed very important matters.

"Cherubino Namjoon, I never expected such behavior from you," said one of the elders. If Jimin remembered well he had to be called Jaehyung but he was not very sure.

"And what would I do?" Namjoon asked raising his head and looking at him defiantly.

"I heard that you seven have fallen in love with a human," said the superior, smiling at him, showing him his white teeth.

The boys widened their eyes, their hearts started to beat wildly. They could not speak, perhaps because they were caught in the act. Yoongi clenched his jaw thinking about who might have heard their private discussion.

"Seraphin Seokjin -continued the superior- you know that these emotions are not part of the angels, but of the demons!" he screamed the last word in panic, had wide eyes and a crazy smile, while looking at Seokjin, who remained impassive.

The Superior was about to insult Jungkook when the main door opened. "What do you want now?" he screamed as soon as he saw an Angel enter.

"Sir, we did what you ordered," said the newcomer, bowing.

"Well," said the Seraphin, then turned to the seven angels. "Surely you are wondering what I asked him to do. I ordered him to kill her while she slept. A quick and painless death. "

The Seraphin never expected such a violent reaction, especially from Seraphin Seokjin. He jumped up and threw himself against his body, squeezing his neck with his hands.

"How dare you! And you are the ones who say you love independently and that you are better than demons, but you are worse than them! As soon as a human creates the slightest problem, you get it out of the way! Jaehyung, remember my words, I will make you go through the pains of hell, I will make you die of a slow and painful death! " Seokjin shouted in anger.

Even the others had never seen him in those conditions. His neck and face were completely red, his hands that were still around Jaehyung's neck trembled and his eyes were filled with tears, as were theirs. In an instant the guards seized Seokjin and stopped him with golden chains, preventing him from moving.

Jaehyung got up and after adjusting his white tunic, looked at the boys, then smiled.

"I, Archangel Jaehyung, in the name of God, cause the Cherubino Namjoon, the Seraphim Seokjin, the Throne Yoongi, the Domination Hoseok, the Archangel Jimin, the archangel Taehyung and the angel Jungkook, to be exiled from Paradise for eternity. May Hell welcome you," said the Archangel and with a snap of fingers it began.

Pain began. They could feel their wings cracking, their heads hurting and their stomach turning over. Hoseok looked towards Jimin, and saw the younger bent forward while holding his head in his hands, the wings were completely bare and writhing taking a really bad position, all the white feathers were still bleeding on the ground while in their place, black feathers were growing. He looked at Namjoon and saw that the color of his eyes had changed to a color he could not define, but he looked like a mixture of light orange and yellow, his white hair had become a light lilac. Maybe his partners's hair had changed too but he had no reflective surface to see himself in.

When the wings changed completely, they felt the floor crumble under their feet and fell on deaf ears. Jungkook opened his eyes just when his body crossed a cloud, he tried to stop and trying to flap his wings but a twinge of pain ran all over his body. He looked to the sides and saw that the boys were beside him, Seokjin held the hands of Jimin and Taehyung, while Hoseok held his and Yoongi's. But who was holding Namjoon's hand? He looked slightly further and saw that Namjoon was still passed out, he tried to tell Yoongi to hold Namjoon's hand, but when they crossed a large cloud, he didn't saw him again.

Then the crash came in no time. The good thing was that it was raining like never before so humans would have thought that the sound of their fall was a thunder nearby.

Hours passed, the first ray of light illuminated the valley which took on a magical aspect. Everything was now visible: the high white mountains with various clouds full of humidity, the pine forest and the river.

Namjoon opened his eyes still dull and heard rapid steps towards him, perhaps someone was running to help him.

"Namjoon!" Seokjin entered his vision followed by Taehyung, who began to dig to free his body of the earth and the mud that had covered it. He tried to speak but only guttural lines came out of his mouth.

"Hyung, don't try! Keep drinking the water we found at a nearby stream! " Jungkook said approaching his cup-shaped hands.

Hyung? What word was it? What did it mean?

"I know you're asking yourself many things but first we have to get you out of here," Seokjin said giving him a reassuring smile. The oldest, along with the youngest, had always had this reassuring soul, which managed to calm the other five.

"Black looks good on you," Namjoon whispered when he started focusing. “Thanks hyung! Lilac is fine for you instead, ”Jungkook replied with a smile. "What is this hyung, you keep calling?" Namjoon asked looking him in the eye.

"Since I have been dead for about two, three years I think things have not changed much, hyung is used by males to call another boy who is older than him, therefore of logic, I should call you all hyung, to show respect, ”said Jungkook, continuing to remove the mud that had trapped one of the older's legs.

After the two freed him, they gave him a hand to get up and clean himself of the residues that had remained on his clothes and face. "So what do we do now?" Jimin asked, attracting the attention of others. "Let's start walking in search of civilization," Yoongi replied.

They didn't know how long they walked when they started hearing car noises. Taehyung passed a bush and had to close his eyes when a light blinded him. It was the headlights of a car passing by.

"Anyone know what place this is?" he asked when the others had joined him. "This ... this is Seoul, we are in South Korea," replied Jungkook and then continued: "This is the city that brought me to end my life, it shouldn't have changed much and I still remember some things,"

"So what are you waiting for? Show us the way angel, ”Hoseok said putting a hand on his shoulder. Jungkook nodded and the others followed him breathlessly. It would have been an adventure in teaching kids how to behave among humans and how to use the simplest things, like taking a bus.

//Well, that dream happened.

//So I fell asleep last night while @selfish-swine had a Gundam Unicorn clip plus some assorted other Youtube videos playing on the TV which might have had some affect but BOY HOWDY, I dreamt I was watching a high-quality production anime of Star Fox but it wasn't a happy one (far from it). Spoilers below due to graphic violence, blood, body horror, and death.

The anime itself has the quality of high-budget OVA, like. Around Gundam: The Origin high quality. Battle Begins looks great, but the anime I saw in my dream looked far more organic rather than with traceovers of the characters’ game models. Which means the expressions on the characters look far more natural, which always bothered me about BB. I emphasize this because the quality of the anime in my dream was what suckered me into believing it was real at the moment.... up until the very end and I thought "..........fuck, this is a dream, isn't it? Goddammit."

It was apparently around mid-season, at Katina. The layout and design resembled what Assault gave us, but, you know. Rendered competently. Everything was of dark colors and alarms and sirens everywhere. Despite this being on Katina, the plotline was N64 Fichina: Fox's team must disarm a bomb but fight off Star Wolf before they can do that. The thing is, apparently, Fox and his team are on foot while Wolf's is wrecking up shit in their Wolfens in Hunter form... except Pigma, whose Wolfen somehow managed to take up the shape of a Geara Zulu but much squatter and more Votoms-sized (so... a green Brutishdog??).

Apparently I caught up to this episode mid-airing, because it looks like the episode only had some 5-10 minutes until the end. As Wolf, Leon, Pigma, and Andrew fuck up the Katina base chasing after Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy, Team Star Fox they end up separating into three different groups: Fox and Peppy each going solo, and Falco and Slippy trying to survive together. Along the way, Wolf, Leon, and Andrew lose sight of their targets and Falco and Slippy take advantage of this to find the bomb in the underground levels and disarm it. Meanwhile, Fox gets lost in the maze in the lower levels as Peppy and Pigma fight above ground outside of the base. And... this is where I felt like my brain wanted to war with my heart because HGGG.

On Fox's side, he finds himself in a hallway right by a secret lab with an indoor window whilst his comm line remains open so he can remain in contact with the rest of the Team (though Peppy is intermittently losing connection). The lab itself resembled a morgue, complete with chambers where bodies where held and an examination table. A simian scientist in a lab coat was there, who appeared similar as the Ruffian whom Star Fox spoke with upon approaching Sargasso in Assault, though with white hair.

He spoke to Fox in the most chilling, dissonantly serene manner, greeting Fox as though he was expecting him. The dialogue was something along the lines of:

Scientist: Hello, Fox. I have been waiting for you. Fox: Were you now? Scientist: I have been expecting you to come pick up your father by now. Would you like to see him? I've fixed him right up. Fox: .....What?

The scientist would then open one of the chambers as Falco and Slippy, overhearing all this from the intercom, desperately calls out to Fox what the hell is going on. The scientist pulls out a bodybag and unzips it..... it's James. Complete with shades and the nick on his ear. Fox balks at the window, hesitating and shaking on the spot. All while the scientist presents the body in full gory detail.

Scientist: You don't believe it's your father? Come take a look yourself. He's very much dead. Would you like to see his eyes? I'd have to search his skull. I don't think I can unsew his mouth if you'd want me to. It was so hard putting his jaw back together.

Fox was just. Frozen on the spot. You can tell he was just contemplating shooting the scientist guy through the window for desecrating James' body like that.... until you hear from Slippy on the intercom:

Slippy: Fox!! Don't listen to him! Your dad should have been dead for five years! There is no way that could be him!!

Meanwhile, above ground, things are looking dire for Peppy. Peppy's Arwing was completely destroyed, and any attempts at requesting another one of something from the Great Fox are constantly interrupted. Finally, Pigma catches up to him, as debris fell on Peppy, keeping him pinned onto the ground and unable to escape. Pigma approaches Peppy and opens up his canopy, showing his face, and aims his gun at Peppy's face, taunting him one last time in person before he decides to kill him. Peppy braces himself for death.... and braces... and braces... nothing. He looks onto Pigma... he's hesitating from squeezing the trigger. Shaking. Almost crying. Peppy then tries to appeal to him, pleading him to not pull that trigger. Even reminding him of the last time they were here in Katina. And then a flashback.

James was leading Pigma and Peppy on a similar mission of disarming a bomb in Katina, and once more, they were on foot, dodging enemy fire. Pigma was assigned to do the disarming, all while James and Peppy were tasked to defend Pigma while he does his work. Just as it looked like the bomb would go off, they managed to succeed. They even celebrated, James, Peppy, and Pigma all cheering that they are still together, alive, and grateful they can trust each other. They got each other's back. As friends as well as colleagues.

Cut to the present. Peppy is still pleading with Pigma, and now both are crying. Wolf, meanwhile, orders Pigma to finish the mission, as the bomb is expected to go off any moment now. Slippy and Falco have failed to reach the bomb. The base is shaking, with the walls breaking down and electricity surging all over. Pigma could have just left Peppy there--he's pinned down anyway. Fox, Falco, and Slippy are nowhere to be seen. Peppy pleads to Pigma that they could run away from here together, forget about the past. Forget what happened. Rebuild their friendship. Look for a better future after the Wars. And forgive each other. Pigma then lowers himself in his seat, gritting his teeth, as he holds onto the controls of his mech as he lowers his gun....

Pigma: ... It's way past forgiveness now.

A gunshot within the shadows. And blood.

There was no sound. Everything seemed to slow down. Falco and Slippy run down the halls, trying to escape the base, and thankfully find Fox along the way. The scientist guy leaves the lab nonchalantly through a secret door within the morgue. Fox is frozen in disbelief as he heard Pigma's shot through the intercom. Did... Pigma kill Peppy? Time sped up and sound returned as normal as red lights flash everywhere and sirens scream into your ears. Fox, Falco, and Slippy managed to make it in time as fire broke out outside the base, their Arwings damaged but flyable. They make their way out into the flames to hop into their cockpits and escape...

Peppy's bullet-riddled body can be seen in the flames, pinned under the debris. He's not breathing.

Fox loses it. Just as the timer is running out, Falco and Slippy plead for Fox as he gets out of his cockpit, crying to Peppy as he rushes to the debris and try to pry it off him. The clock is ticking. Falco tells Fox to just leave Peppy: he's already dead. Fox doesn't care. We get very quick flashbacks of when Fox and Peppy knew each other back in the day. When Fox was a pup and Peppy attended his birthday party. When he scraped his knee and Peppy put a bandaid on it. When he was attending his mother's funeral with his Peppy and James comforting him in the rain. When Peppy arrived on Papetoon after escaping that fateful mission to Venom. All while Fox is trying to pull the rubble off Peppy, as though not caring if he gets caught in the explosion. Knowing full well they could just die right here, right now, Falco and Slippy leap out of their cockpits and help Fox remove the rubble, then aid him in bringing Peppy’s body into Fox’s cockpit as they barely make it off the base alive. The explosion’s blowback even knocks them out as they are exiting the atmosphere, and it seemed like forever until their ships make it out of orbit, on its way to the Great Fox.

The scene cuts quickly to the three just. Staring onto Peppy’s body while he laid on a cot in the dark. Slippy is clearly crying, Falco can’t even cognitively muster a response in grief. And Fox. He stares into space. Wondering why he fell for the scientist’s lies and came to Peppy’s aid when he had the chance.

And the episode ends there.

And I was just all “...WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?” So I looked the episode online, as of course there is a wikipedia page on it. Apparently this episode caused a lot of controversy in Japan, and in an interview with one of the head writers, he says that he decided with killing off Peppy in such a heartwrenching manner because 1.) He wanted to bring back the emotional gravitas of losing a wingman permanently as the original Star Fox had, and 2.) He REALLY hated how Peppy’s fakeout was written in, so the death scene and everything written around it was intended to be a “fix” to that. BAWWW.

So of course I tried to look for a followup to this episode, and found out, in a future episode, they actually return to the destroyed Katina base for... some reason or other. I think Fox wanted to find the scientist to see if he really knew what happened to James. Upon finding him, the graphics of the anime resembled closer to how Battle Begins looked (as in traceovers of game models), and Fox was able to lead Falco and Slippy into the remains of the lab. For... some strange reason, everything was starting to look like a Dead Space level, with meat moss everywhere and blood and such. Yeah.

The scientist was there and is all “...I found the secret to eternal life. Want to meet your father, Fox?~” And before Fox, Falco, and Slippy knew it, James (or the lookalike) comes in with a horde of Resident Evil-styled zombies. And then cut to black.

...Yeah, it was at that part where I thought “....this is just a fucking dream, isn’t it?” And indeed, I woke up to the TV still on and a video game review (?) being on, because apparently both Rob and I fell asleep before either of us could turn it off.

Do you have any plans for Shaded Moss, since Gray Wing is dying in his place? (The specifics of that in my brain was Gray Wing shoving him out of the way of the carriage)

My own thoughts were something along the lines of him having been second-in-command to Gray Wing, but after xir death, Clear Sky starts undermining them, 'suggesting' to people that hey, maybe he *set that up* like, isn't it convenient? That Gray Wing died? Leaving Shaded Moss in charge? Wow, funny like that, huh? And even if most of the group dismisses it as bullshit, it's still "What kinda moron almost gets run over by a carriage and has to be pushed out of the way? Should we really be following him?" Eventually, Clear Sky takes the people who listen to him and leaves, and Tall Shadow kinda forces him to step down, and Shaded Moss kinda lives on the fringes of the group until after Bumble gets driven out. He kinda serves as a surrogate father to Thunder (because I kinda want to keep adoption a thing) and teaches him how to pass better as a tom (because I love older transmascs helping guide their juniors, I wish I had had someone older who knew a little more helping me with that shit as a kid).

I imagine he dies in the First Battle, either just before the "Tell the stars you won" line, or just after, knocking Clear Sky off of Bright Storm and getting killed for it just before Starclan intervenes.

(Note though: Shaded Moss -> Shaded Flower, because they now have a naming system that includes a familial last name. Shaded Flower and Rainswept Flower are father and daughter like canon.)

It'll be good for showing how "connected" tribe culture is, to have Thunder Storm have bonds with a lot of the cats he will eventually come into conflict with. Thunder Storm having a surrogate dad figure in the disgraced leader works nicely. Here's how I'll approach it though, taking your suggestions and making sure it works with what's established;

Gray Wing was the leader, Shaded Flower was second in command. He was a logistics sort of guy.

They had never seen a horse before. The group charged in front of it while crossing, spooking it.

Something I found interesting in Sun Trail is that Clear Sky was commanding them across the road that gets Canon!Shade killed on. I think I want to keep that, having Clear Sky be the one who shouted for them all to charge.

Shaded Flower's response to the large animal rearing up was to hiss and freeze

And of course, Gray Wing runs back to save him, getting kicked and killed.

While burying xem, Shade was catching flak. He panicked and his response was to freeze. Clear Sky never takes responsibility for his own actions, and what kind of guy freezes in front of a deer so huge??

He didn't really "step down" so much as Tall Shadow and Clear Sky just naturally started becoming the new leaders. He was pretty ashamed that he got Gray Wing killed.

Embarrassingly, Rainswept Flower ended up having to be his defender a lot of the time. He didn't want her reputation to suffer as a result of his cowardice, but... ugh here they are.

When Jagged Peak broke his leg, Shaded Flower didn't speak up, doubting his own judgement.

But when Bright Storm comes back with her three-legged newborn, he is IMMEDIATELY on Tall Shadow's side in the split. Though his reputation took a big hit, him being on her side IS still helpful.

He probably teaches Thunder Storm how to cook along with helping his transition, since this is going to be an important skill he displays later when he befriends River's Ripple. Rainswept Flower is like a young 19-year-old at this point, making her own life, and Shaded Flower has a sort of loneliness about him.

He probably looks out for Bright Storm, too, since they both had a pretty traumatic experience with Clear Sky treating them like ass. Brings her food and such, makes small talk, watches her kid when she needs a break.

Shaded Flower is, however, probably not a member of early ThunderClan. Or at the very least, he's kind of conflicted about it.

Rainswept Flower is loyal to Tall Shadow, and will remain ShadowClan for her whole life. He really doesn't want to leave her behind

(She even eventually has kittens with Sun Shadow, but that's not super relevant.)

Though... I may have him be part of Bright Storm's Reinforcements, and note how much he's torn between supporting the boy who's practically an adopted son, and his daughter back in Tall Shadow's Clan. He can love them both equally and be torn up over it.

Whatever happens, he will be dying in the place where Rainswept Flower dies in canon. His death in Clear Sky's jaws, "I'm not greedy, just strong!" enrages Bright Storm, who bumrushes him.

She delivers the Star Line, Clear Sky rejects it, and Thunder Storm rushes in to end his battle with Clear Sky once and for all before StarClan halts it.

An endangered spider struggles to survive as the forest changes in its Appalachian home

When biologist Kefyn Catley hikes the damp forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), he is often on the hunt. A professor at Western Carolina University (WCU), Catley studies the history and evolution of insects, but of particular interest to him is the future of one species of spider found only in a few isolated pockets of the Southern Appalachian Mountains: the endangered spruce-fir moss spider.

Roughly the size of a BB pellet, this species is the world’s smallest tarantula. In years past, Catley remembers finding the spider high on the moss-covered rock outcroppings that dot Clingmans Dome, a mountain straddling North Carolina and Tennessee. At 6,643 feet, it’s the highest peak in the park. There, spruce-fir forests provide the moisture and shade that nurture bryophytes (nonvascular plants, including mosses) growing on rocks, the elusive spider’s main habitat. But that habitat is in serious decline...
