Happy 20th
"And so it was, as it is. Matoran into Toa, Toa into Turaga, Turaga into legend... Remembering deeds past... and bringing hope to the future. United in Duty. Bound in Destiny. This is the way...of the Bionicle."

Bionicle 2: Mysteries of Metru Nui
There are many, many parts of B2 that don't really stand up to scrutiny, but one of the most odd was Vakama's reaction to one of his earlier visions. Its at 14 minutes in if this video also at some point gets scrubbed from the internet in the ongoing censorship campaign.
UPDATE: The youtube upload of TLOMN that was referenced here has seemingly been removed since this post was written.
youtube
Vakama says that "[He] saw it, Metru-Nui was destroyed!" but even as a child I was confused by this statement, as the images shown in the vison the city looked fine, just a bit....purple.
There have long been rumors that this was a hasty, last minute edit, that originally the destruction was more explicitly depicted.
Someone that claims to have in their possession the movie contacted me recently about their experience trying to release it.
I don't know how I got my hands on the DVD, its just been something I had around all my childhood. I don't know if someone my family knew were affiliated with Bionicle, or Creative Capers, if I had known I would have bragged about it constantly LOL. So for my childhood this WAS Legends of Metru Nui for me, it wasn't until adulthood, and me getting back in to the Bionicle fan communities during COVID that I came across the version uploaded youtube and Biomedia Project. [...] So when I had the chance to go back to my parents a few months later I was able to dig out the old DVD I watched back then and ripped it. So as a joke, last BIO Day I thought I'd upload the movie in full to see if anyone would notice the change. [...] Then a few months ago I get an email from youtube that the video was copyright claimed by Lego and it had been taken down, I was really shocked.
He was kind enough to send me a copy of the email, and its genuine.
His youtube account was heavily penalised, and as the account has a lot of important things uploaded to it he didn't wish to risk it by trying again.
He sent me a phone video of the scene in question as proof.
youtube
As you can see, instead of simply being covered in a purple fog, the coliseum itself is exploding and collapsing.
The quality is poor, and the audio nearly impossible to make out, but if you compare it to the released version, the explosion might even still be in the final sound mix, just obfuscated to be the sound of a thunder clap.
Now, why was this hasty edit made? Most theories point to 9/11.
The September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade center in 2001 was very shocking and traumatised much of the united states of america. Some things released closer to the time were hastily edited to remove any imagery that might call back to it, for one Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty had a whole sequence from the ending where the giant Arsenal Gear crashed though much of Manhattan stopping just short of the Twin Towers cut at the last moment.
Now you may ask, "MGS2 came out in 2001, but B2 was 2004 why was it still censored" but that's simple, 9/11 left deep scars in the us psyche, even 2002's Lord of the Rings the Two Towers was heavily criticised in some circles for the sensational name trying to cash in on the tragedy, even though the book it was based on was nearly 60 years old. So its not outside of the realm of possibility that even in 2004 a piece of children's media featuring such a scene would be deemed in bad taste.
Even today, the long dead Bionicle fan site Bionicle Zone Power reactivates once a year to pay respects to the tragedy.
Now as to why TLG or someone at least posing as them would be so fanatical and judicious about this version of the film being released to the public, that's anyone's guess.
So that is the story of the weird scene in Bionicle 2: The Legend of Metru Nui. If only all of the nonsensical scenes in that film could be so thoroughly explained.

So I opened my Italian copy of Bionicle 2 (cause I’m Italian) and…

Are you kidding me?! (No other names were ever change in even in earlier years)
for context, Italian dubs had the tendecy to change names of series, characters and toys to sell them better and other stuff like that.
but you’re telling me that ULTIMATE DUME is better than DUMENATOR?! It rocks!
also I checked my Mask Of Light and Bionicle 3 ones and they didn’t have much except for the themes list but

I did find this cards inside of my Legend Reborn one. Apparently there was also a card game going on

Anyway here's 9 minutes of me playing the Bionicle: City Of Legends movement demo (specifically the PS2 version, via the PCSX2 emulator) after spending what felt like half an hour trying to fix an issue with my controller not being detected properly and therefore going off on its own thing.
Notes below.
It is. Very bare-bones. The "enemies" you can spawn appear to be extremely simplistic Jerboas that lack any animation and either spawn endlessly or just don't die; the "Level Select" button doesn't seem to take you to the level select (hence the bit around 2 minutes in where the screen goes black and my mouse becomes visible; I had to exit out of the emulator and then re-run the .iso just so I could select the other map); the combo-messages are things like "Woo." [sic], "cool" and, bizarrely, "Biscuits"; sometimes the special interactable things just flat-out don't work (leading to fun things like Matau running up the sides of poles instead of sexily sliding down them like he's supposed to); and in the "playground", the death-triggers do not kill you.
Also it is extremely glitchy. In the first map, "Ta-Wahi" (which looks more like a big furnace-room), you can climb on the invisible walls surrounding the central arena, and in the "playground" you can run up walls endlessly, Saints Row IV-style; as previously mentioned, this also extends to pretty much anything with any sort of collision, and you can see in the footage that I get stuck running on seemingly nothing and have to reset the entire level.
And yet, it's legitimately pretty fun; the special tricks are all fun to pull off and chain together, the animation is legitimately good (although I haven't played Bionicle: The Game yet, so I don't know if any of it could be recycled from there), and it would have been pretty cool to explore Metru Nui with this gameplay. Also the ice-physics are fun! I am genuinely pissed off that we didn't get this game. Someone needs to make a spiritual successor to this now.
Oh yeah, I just want to go back to that thing I said about the poles; I love the fact that you play as Matau, the wackiest of the Toa Metru, and that the animation for touching vertical poles is to slide down like a firefighter and/or poledancer. It's great, and from what I know of Matau's personality in this arc it's 100% something I can imagine him doing. Also I kinda wish I was better at drawing so I could do some cool art based on this demo.
And yes, I did crash the emulator at the end by spawning 300 Jerboas. I had to see if it would happen.

Aurora's second arc is to the first arc what Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows is to Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui; now that our 6 main characters have all been introduced and proven their worth, we get to just see them interact and have nice little character actions, and i really like that.
#actually the ending* of the first arc also had someone sacrificing themselves to stop a giant evil winged guy#yes i know that wasnt the end but the dainix and falst chapters felt like winding down the tension to me#though that DID end with characters emerging from a giant underground mechanical structure#and now that i think of it you can kinda line up the characters with the toa metru#the main character who has imposter syndrome#the blue lady who holds the teqm together#the goofball who cant keep themself on the ground#the grumpy one who likes climbing things#the quiet one who's probably spent a little too long in dark rooms#the smart one? iunno Nuju and Erin are where this falls apart#this HAS to be a coincidence tho#aurora#aurora comic#comic aurora#bionicle
