A strong blow before the BRICS meeting in South Africa and a surprise in the selection of member states The latest economic news, where the dollar has arrived, and new economic decisions expected at the next BRICS meeting
This new episode of Samri channel devotes its space to discussing the details of the 15th BRICS Summit, which started today in Johannesburg, South Africa. And starting with South African President Cyril Rama Foza, who said in a televised statement about the summit that BRICS plans to discuss expanding the bloc’s membership at the current summit, stressing that more than 20 countries have submitted official requests to join BRICS, while about 40 countries have shown wide interest in joining the group that It aims, according to Rama Foza, to create a more balanced international order vis-a-vis the political and economic blocs led by the West.
On the other hand, the episode enumerates the beneficiaries of the current BRICS summit. Where the host country itself is South Africa, which is rapidly increasing its regional and international status. Then China, which is trying to escape from its current economic stumbling block by expanding BRICS membership.
Then India, whose currency is confirmed in the rupee, will be approved for trade exchange between the BRICS member states. Finally, Russia, which seeks, through expanding the BRICS base, to break the isolation that the West is trying to impose on it.
Finally, the episode refers to the memberships expected to be accepted in BRICS for specific countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Algeria.

Benefits of CBD
With the TRIPS Agreement coming into force in 1995, BRIC countries have undertaken significant reforms in their intellectual property systems. A relatively new analytical definition of the industrial components of the economy is 'Creative industries', in which creativity being an input and intellectual property is the output. Globally, mapping exercises have concurred that the creative industries are indeed 'economically significant' and legitimately comparable to other high profile sectors in terms of their contribution to income, employment and trade.
Concept of IPR in BRIC Brazil enacted its first intellectual property law in 1887. Brazil meets International Standards of Intellectual Property Protection. Brazil is a signatory of several conventions, treaties, and agreements that define basic, internationally-accepted standards of intellectual property protection including, among others, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Brazil is also a member of Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). What are the benefits of CBD?  The new Industrial Property Law came into force in May of 1996. This law brought Brazil's patent and trademark regime up to par with the international standards specified in TRIPS. Intellectual Property protection in Brazil includes Copyright Law, Software Law and also some secondary laws.
In Russia the concept of IPR was understood as mostly patents during the times of the former Soviet Union. The owner of the Patents as well as all innovations was always the state. The concept of IPR has already been drastically changed in Russia and now IPR is seen in consisting of Patents, Trademarks, utility modes, designs, domain names and copyrights. After 10 years of Russia's independence, the country has started to come into compliance with International requirements for intellectual property rights protection. Today also much work is needed to be done to bring Russia up to International standard.
Indian Intellectual Property Laws keep pace with the technological developments & Intellectual Property Laws of other countries. India has different positions with respect to intellectual property right in prior to the member of TRIPS and after the signatory of TRIPS agreement. Patent, Copyright, Trademark and Design were only existed as branch of IPR prior to TRIPS agreement. However, at present Patents (Amendment) Act 2005, TradeMarks Act 1999, Copyright Act 1999, Design Act 2000, Trade secrets, Layout Design of Integrated circuits 2000, Geographical Indications 1999 and Plant Variety 2001 related to IPR are enforced in India. India signed the TRIPS agreement in 1995, joined Paris convention in 1998, Budapest Treaty in 2001, Universal convention for Copyright (UCC) in 1952, Washington Convention for Integrated Circuit in 1989, and convention in Bio-diversity (CBD) in 1994. India is signatory to Berne Convention and Indian Government has already approved Madrid Protocol.
China has had a history of 25 years in the filed of Intellectual property rights protection. China's current legal IPR framework began in the 1980s, however, in that short time, China has made impressive strides in protecting and enforcing IPR. China became the member of WIPO in June 1980. The patent law of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was adopted in 1984. In 1993 the law of the PRC against unfair competition was enacted and the copyright law was enforced in 1990.
Enforcement of IP Rights
The originate and history of IPR in BRIC countries as explained above indicates the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in the BRIC countries has also been introduced long back , and the journey is clearly far from over.
In spite of having diverse histories, the BRIC economies are receiving roughly similar treatment from the wealthiest nations. Copyright and trademark piracy have always been chosen as a topic for the assessing the future of BRIC intellectual property regimes. However, other areas of intellectual property protection have broader significance to most industries and play a vital role in the economic development of the industry as well as the nation. In particular, the impact of patents on innovation and economic performance is so complex that a well organized patent system is crucial to ensure maximum benefit for a country's firms and its overall economy.
Despite divergent pasts, the BRICs are generally on the same page today when it comes to the protections afforded pharmaceuticals. The revised law in Brazil now complies with TRIPS, at least in regard to subject-matter protection. Brazil instituted a formal system for the approval of generic pharmaceuticals. After Russia instituted modern patent property rights with individual ownership, Russia currently protects pharmaceutical patents. The previous Indian Patents Act (1970) recognized patents on pharmaceutical 'processes', but not on 'products', allowing domestic pharmaceutical companies to produce cheap copies of patented drugs made by foreign companies using alternative production methods. India's introduction of product patents in 2005 heralded innovation and rapid development of that nation's pharmaceutical sector and delivery of new medicines. The Mashelkar Committee revised report was submitted in March 2009 concluded that every effort shall be made to provide drugs at affordable prices to people of India. The report also stated that it would not be TRIPS compliant to limit granting of patents for pharmaceutical substance to NCE (New Chemical Entities) only, and exclude an entire class of inventions i.e incremental pharmaceutical inventions. According to the conclusion of this report, incremental innovations" involving new forms, analogs, etc with significantly better safety and efficacy standards shall be encouraged.

Business of Art | Film Festival Strategies and Why You Need One
Tumblr media
Harness the momentum of film festivals with these best practices.
Before creating a film festival submission strategy, check out these tips and tricks from Kathy Brew, guest curator of MoMA’s Doc Fortnight. Brew distilled her wide-ranging experience for an audience of filmmakers at NYFA in the fall of 2018; we’ve summarized her advice below.
First off, why submit to festivals?
Festivals offer filmmakers a variety of benefits. These range from sales and distribution opportunities to publicity and the prestige of being accepted as well as the possibility, in some cases, of winning awards. Festivals are also crucial for networking and generating interest in your film.
When should I think about submitting to festivals?
Consider festivals and who your intended audience is while you work on the film. Your audience will determine which festivals you apply to and help you set goals for the film. For example, are you trying to gain a big commercial distributor or are you passionate about educating the public about a certain subject? It’s also helpful to know festival deadlines and plan accordingly.
When is a film ready to be submitted?
If your film doesn’t feel ready by a festival deadline, don’t submit. Finish your film. This doesn’t mean you need to have the sound mastered, the coloring complete, and every detail finalized by the submission deadline, but festivals don’t want to see a rough cut that’s still changing.
Finally it’s time to apply. What’s my strategy?
Research festivals and think about who might screen a film such as yours. What did this festival screen last year? Who selects the films? Is there a jury? It’s also important to be realistic. The biggest and most famous festivals aren’t always the best fit for your film.
Festivals come in three varieties: large industry festivals, regional festivals, and constituency festivals (aimed at specific communities or subjects). When evaluating a festival, consider its reputation and what it’ll accomplish for you. What promotion (if any) will the festival provide? Will you be paid to attend, and is the filmmaker’s experience at the festival a priority? Will there be networking events or professional development opportunities? Will your film be given a favorable time slot?
Festival application fees add up, so do your research to find the right festival for you.
Hooray! I got into a festival. What’s next?
Attend your screening and the festival. If the festival takes place in a town or city in which you’re based or well-connected, try to fill the theater. Programmers will tell other programmers if the theater is packed. Also, be prepared with your own publicity materials on hand, like postcards and fliers.
Learn who attends the festival, identify all industry attendees, and always introduce yourself to the people you encounter. Someone you meet in line might prove to be an important connection in the future. Attend as many festival parties and events as you can.
It seems like one film can have many premieres. Why is that?
Yes, films often have everything from a world to a borough premiere. The industry ranks festivals according to prominence like so: world, international (first time screening outside country of origin), continental, national, regional, state, city, and so on.
Premieres exist to create buzz for your film and the festival. Some festivals will demand premiere status for a film to be eligible, which creates problems for filmmakers accepted to multiple festivals. In this case, your film can’t premiere at two festivals, and you will need to choose one. This is why you must consider what a festival will do for you. A name brand festival might sound like a good idea, but it may not offer you any coverage or it may screen your film at an inopportune slot. A smaller festival, though, may offer you the opening slot and promotion, which can ultimately lead to distribution opportunities and other deals.
What are my options for distribution?
Film distribution is the process of making a film available for viewing by an audience. Like festivals, distribution also follows a hierarchy with top-tier festivals seen as being at the top, followed by museums and theaters, semi-theatrical releases, TV/broadcast, educational market, home video, and VOD/SVOD (subscription video on demand). The thing to know about distribution is that it’s easy to move down the distribution ranks, but difficult to move up. Learn more about the various film distribution models.
If your film has commercial potential, consider finding a sales agent to represent you. Sales agents know festivals and will negotiate directly with distributors on your behalf.
How do I deal with festival rejection?
Different selection panels have differing thoughts on what makes a film the right fit for a festival. At some level, this process can be subjective; a rejection is far from a conclusive negative judgement on your film. Panelists can also change from year to year, so if you feel strongly that a festival is right for you, don’t hesitate to reapply.
What are some common mistakes to avoid?
Don’t rescind acceptance, even if it means delaying your confirmation. The festival programmer recognizes that a filmmaker may have submitted their film to several festivals and will be aware of the various deadlines. That said, you may not want to delay acceptance because you’re waiting to hear from a large industry festival like Sundance but don’t have any assurance you’ll be accepted. It’s best to begin getting your film in front of an audience.
And again, never send rough cuts. You want to be considerate of the panelists’ time.
What’s the general shelf life for a festival film?
Doc Fortnight only looks at films from the last two years. Many other festivals also follow defined time frames, so be sure to read the guidelines carefully. A topical film may have a more limited shelf life, while other films are more evergreen.

ARGUMENT
Decolonizing the United Nations Means Abolishing the Permanent Five
The inequalities of the past can’t set the rules of the present.
— By Hannah Ryder, Anna Baisch, Ovigwe Eguegu | September 17, 2020 | Foreign Policy
Tumblr media
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and “Political Prostitute Nimrata Nikki Randhawa ‘Hillbilly’ Haley” (center) addresses the U.N. Security Council during a meeting at the United Nations in New York on Nov. 26, 2018. Don Emmert/AFP Via Getty Images
This year, as the effects of COVID-19 continue to be felt around the world, leaders are preparing to meet virtually to mark 75 years of the United Nations: its “diamond” anniversary. But 2020 has brought into focus some sharp issues around the U.N.’s effectiveness, including its largest donor, the United States, pulling funds from the World Health Organization (WHO). There were mounting problems in the U.N. prior to this. The U.N. and its agencies are constantly fighting for new money to cover escalating costs of various missions such as on health, education, and peacekeeping, despite global improvements in poverty. In terms of maintaining peace and security—the U.N.’s record has been dismal—from dithering over apartheid in South Africa, to Iraq, Rwanda, Yemen, the 2008 financial crisis, and now, COVID-19.
The typical responses to the U.N.’s failure have been to enlarge the P5, the five permanent members of the Security Council who represent the chief victors of World War II. Bring in other global powers such as India or Turkey. Move around the representational seats and create new categories. Create more seats for Africa. Dilute the veto power exercised by the P5.
But all of these measures are tinkering. None are adequate. The only way forward is to acknowledge the key difference between 1945 and 2020, decolonization, and abolish the permanent members of the Security Council altogether. Here’s why and how.
The roots of the U.N. are deeply colonial. Back in 1945 four out of the five members of the P5 were colonial states. Over the 75 years of the U.N.’s existence, 80 former colonies have gained independence, from India to Kenya, to Nigeria and Kazakhstan.
This has meant a significant shift in population terms. In 1945 the P5—China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Russia—accounted for 10 percent of member states and over 50 percent of the world’s population, within their empires. Now, the P5 account for 26 percent of the world’s population, and just 3 percent of the U.N. member states.
Even with the 10 additional nonpermanent members of the Security Council—who have to compete to be elected to sit on the council for two years, which costs millions of dollars in lobbying—Security Council seats are distinctly Eurocentric. As our research shows, the Western European and Others Group and the Eastern European Group combined represent just 17.1 percent of the global population, but they have held 47 percent of Security Council seats.
And within these groups, the big countries almost always win. Japan has spent 22 years on the Security Council. Brazil 20 years. Within African countries, only Nigeria, with 10 years, comes close.
This poorly distributed allocation is reflected in other parts of the U.N.—in particular the secretary-general position itself. Since 1945, four out of the nine secretaries-general have been white European men. There has never been a Muslim secretary-general.
U.N. leaders have sought to address this by diversifying heads of agencies or undersecretaries-general, but individuals are not the answer. Take COVID-19. Despite an Ethiopian head of the WHO, who might be expected to advocate for the poorest countries in the world, the only resolution the P5-led Security Council has unanimously adopted referring to COVID-19 this year is resolution 2532—supporting a call made by the secretary-general in March for a global cease-fire to focus on efforts to fight COVID-19. This is important but hardly influential, and it’s largely irrelevant to the thousands of people who have since died prematurely due to lax COVID-19 responses and lack of international finance to manage the impacts of required lockdowns in the poorest countries. Instead, African leaders have turned closer to the African Union’s Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention for COVID-19 advice, and to the unrepresentative yet powerful G-20 and IMF for financial support, not the U.N.
Why does this distribution matter? The shift in postcolonial (and post-Cold War) membership is essentially the U.N.’s only major shift in composition in 75 years.
Contrary to what many observers—especially economists like ourselves—might have us believe, there has not been a great economic rebalancing. Our calculations suggest—again including former colonies—that the P5’s share of global GDP in 1940 was around 47 percent. Today, the P5 accounts for just 2 percentage points more of GDP—49 percent of the global total.
Yes, China’s economic rise within the P5 has been notable—in fact, doubling in economic importance from accounting for 14 percent to 33 percent of the P5’s total wealth. But for the rest of the world, their economic relationship with the P5 has hardly changed over the U.N.’s 75 years. Global economics and the U.N. structure remain rooted in the power structures of 1945, despite the political independence.
Has the P5’s U.N. status helped to maintain economic imperialism, or has their economic might helped them to maintain their powerful U.N. positions? In some ways it is only the correlation that matters. The U.N.’s structural inability to compel the P5 countries themselves to act decisively for the greater good is often acknowledged as a key justification for change, but this is often countered with economic arguments that we are all better off now. This counter does not hold water. The P5’s failure to distribute economic benefits to the rest of the world despite decolonization is also a structural problem that justifies change.
The answer lies in the geopolitical ideals leaders set out back in 1945. The Security Council was conceived on a basis of responsibility and capacity of working collaboratively, rather than on the principle of representation. At that time, after emerging from World War II and meeting in San Francisco, the leaders of the P5 felt themselves to be responsible and capable, despite their colonial pursuits.
While the economics might be the same, the potential member states that might be deemed responsible or capable in 2020 are very different to those in 1945. And they will likely be different in 2030, 2045, or another 75 years ahead. With climate change, it’s likely that our global crises will only become more complex over the next 75 years.
There is no country in the world that deserves a permanent seat. Veto-based decision-making on behalf of others, as the Security Council does, should be earned, and criteria for responsibility and capability transparently demonstrated and rewarded.
A reimagined structure for a Security Council would see all 15 seats being made temporary, for periods of five years to provide more continuity, with wide, nonregional open competition for each seat, alongside clear, monitored restrictions on lobbying expenses and two-term limits within a cycle of 30 years to reward excellence while avoiding domination.
Such a structure would not be a toothless democratic body like the U.N. General Assembly, where every country has one vote, regardless of its record, wealth, population, or military might, and no country has a veto. Nor would it be an easy and potentially diverse yet unaccountable “coalition of the willing,” nor a supposedly elite and powerful grouping of countries such as the G-7, BRICS, or G-20, subject to groupthink and hiding behind each other.
These 15 countries, just as nonpermanent members have established precedent for doing now, would need to be elected by others—they would need to prove their worth to others. They would need to build allies within the U.N., for instance within their groupings, and campaign to show they are indeed responsible and capable to be trusted to help the world tackle issues from poverty and climate change to pandemics and financial crises. P5 members could thus arguably remain on the council, but they would need to compete and pitch to do so.
While a 15-seat Security Council might initially seem large, a council that aimed to be effective in decision-making while embedding the principle of collaboration would also implement a rule that veto power can only be exercised by two members together—i.e., any country would need to find another supporter to oppose a decision. Preserving the veto would also maintain its distinction from the General Assembly and from the pre-World War II League of Nations, the U.N.’s failed predecessor.
Detractors will immediately contend that the P5 will not accept this. Nor would they submit to decisions made by others. Indeed, some P5 members have remained out of certain U.N.-based mechanisms for this reason. Three out of the five permanent members do not recognize the U.N. General Assembly-endorsed International Criminal Court (ICC) decisions. Yet the ICC has made important contributions to justice for thousands, if not millions of people. The U.N. can and does still play a guardian role, even if P5 members remain outside.
The world cannot take another 75 years of unaccountability and inequality. A reimagined, stronger structure has a chance of creating a more fit-for-purpose and adaptive U.N., ready to face the challenges of the future.

Global Diabetes Management Market
Diabetes management market size was valued at USD 12.7 billion in 2016 and is projected to reach USD 61.59 billion at a CAGR of 17.2%.
Tumblr media
This is a comprehensive global report focused on the current and future prospects of the diabetes management market. This report is a consolidation of primary and secondary research, which provides market size, share, dynamics, and forecast for various segments and sub-segments considering the macro and microenvironmental factors. An in-depth analysis of past trends, future trends, demographics, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements for the diabetes management market has been done in order to calculate the growth rates for each segment and sub-segments.
Rising prevalence of diabetes is anticipated to fuel the demand for diabetes management devices and antidiabetic drugs
Growing geriatric population, the worldwide rising prevalence of diabetes, increasing uptake of novel drugs such as incretin & dipeptidyl inhibitors, technological advancements in diabetes devices, and the presence of government initiatives are factors attributed to the market growth over the forecast period. In addition, the increasing prevalence of obesity and the growing preference for combination therapy across the world is expected to assist in market growth. Geriatric population is prone to develop diabetes. According to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the global population aged 60 years and above is anticipated to rise from 841.0 million in 2013 to over 2.0 billion by 2050.WHO further reported that the number of diabetic patients has increased from 108.0 million in 1980 to 422.0 million in 2014. This disease is anticipated be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.
On the contrary, a high cost of devices and therapeutics is expected to hinder the market growth over the forecast period.
The blood glucose meters, a leading device segment in the diabetes management market
On the basis of monitoring device type, the blood glucose meters segment is expected to dominate the market during the forecast period due to the increasing need of blood glucose level monitoring in order to manage diabetes effectively.
The injectables segment is expected to spearhead the market in next ten years
On the basis of therapeutics, the injectables segment is anticipated to hold a major chunk of the diabetes management market in near future owing to a rising preference for insulin from patients. Lou, thanks for reading the little thoughts that possessed me this morning. They just come and I am powerless to stop them. And also thanks for sending me the link to the writing sites. Some of them are interesting and sound like fun. Damn it, now that you planted that seed for me, I have written a little piece to send to one of those places on the list.
Can you or will you read it and let me know what you think? This short story was based on a visit I made to a house I used to live in when I was 10. The story itself is totally made up, but the images are real.
THE HOUSE ON HAMLIN STREET
My plane landed at the Bob Hope airport in Burbank, California just around 2:pm. It was the first time in forty-five years I had set foot in the San Fernando Valley. As the place taxied down the runaway, I looked at my window from seat 30F and could see a piece of my past enshrouded in the smog that lay over the land.
Once i disembarked from the 737, I  made my way through the tiny terminal, retrieved my luggage and my rental car. Twenty minutes later, I steered a fairly new Ford Expedition onto North Hollywood Way. I had my google map on the seat  next to me. I turned west onto Sherman Way and drove deeper into my old neighborhood. I passed by strip malls and various fast food joints, places that had  not yet found their foothold when I was last in this area. I was only ten then, and the congested activity of those blocks seemed like a world of their own. Sherman Way stretched on forever, and as I thought back to that ten-year old boy, I could remember how far the street seemed to go. It made me feel lost and so far from home.
Finally, I reached Coldwater Canyon Blvd. My ultimate destination was rapidly approaching. As I turned south, I could feel a light flutter of anticipation in my stomach. It was only a couple  more miles to Hamlin Street. Would the house still be there? God, I hope so.
Three more blocks before my turn, Coldwater Canyon Elementary School came into view. The school looked just as I remembered it; albeit a lot smaller, but back then it was a vast jungle of classroom bungalows and wide playgrounds. A sudden memory of my first fistfight flashed in my mind. I saw a crowd of shouting kids circled around  me and my opponent. We were clenched in headlocks, the standard strategy for fifth graders back then. Damn, I can’t think of what that kid’s name was—Robert or Russell. I do remember this person  had given me my first black eye. Thinking back to that day, I could almost feel the throbbing above my left eyebrow from the punch I took, and  how I had stood within that circle of kids and cried. Shame danced in my heart like a ghost haunting my memories. I would return later and take some pictures, but home was so very close now and I passed my old school without another thought.
Hamlin Street came up  next and I turned left. Two blocks down, at the corner of Alcove Street, I finally reached my goal. I was amazed that I could still find my way home after forty-five years. Relief surged through me as I pulled up to the curb across the street from my boyhood home. It was still there. A stone wall had been built around the perimeter of the front yard, but essentially nothing had changed. I noticed that the street sign on the corner was the same one that stood there all those years ago. Sure, it was weathered and faded and it leaned a bit to the right, but I could still read the letters through the dents in its surface, dents that I had put there by throwing rocks at it.
Looking out the windshield of my Expedition, I was suddenly ten-years old again. More memories took hold of me and guided my mind back to the summer of 1970. School would be letting out and the warm days stretching ahead would be filled with high adventures. There were dirt wars in my backyard, green plastic soldiers arranged in attack formations and ready to wipe out Charlie and his communist evil. Little League would be starting up and I would be in the outfield shagging pop-ups with the odor of freshly mowed grass wafting all around. My mother would be in our kitchen making Kool-Aid popsicles and dad would be out in the garage tuning up his old Indian motorcycle, getting ready to take me on a ride to the Mojave Desert. My best friend, Dave Munson, would come over and we would go down Victory Blvd to Matt and Tony’s Sub Shop, where sixty-five cents would get us two meatball subs with a dime left over for the  jukebox.
They were nice memories. Unfortunately, they were complete fantasy. I have spent all these years  hidden behind their softness, away from the pain and loss I really lived with that long, dark summer. There were no adventures, no green plastic soldiers or Little League. Mom didn’t make those popsicles and dad never took me on that ride to the desert. Dave never came by and we ate no meatball subs, never listened to Steppenwolf sing “Born to be Wild.”  No, that summer was the years my parents were killed, smashed up on the highway when a truck driver with too much coffee and not enough sleep drifted over the white line and ended their lives, along with my innocence.
As these memories held me, I did not notice the front door of my old house open or see the elderly Asian couple step out on the porch. Nostalgic tears threatened to streak down my cheeks. Finally, through those pools of mist, I saw the couple moving out front. They were gazing my way and the old man pointed at my rental. It suddenly occurred to me that my presence there on the street might appear mysterious, perhaps even sinister to the old couple. I swallowed the lump in my throat and opened my door. I would go over and explain to them why I was there.
As I crossed the street and approached the house, its owners seemed to stiffen with fear, watching this strange white man walk towards them, about to disrupt their simple lives. The old  man stepped forward, as is  he was prepared to protect his wife from the evils of the world—definitely from one stranger who did not belong in their driveway.
“Can I help you?” the man warily asked me.
I shook my head. “I’m sorry,” I replied. “I don’t mean to intrude, but—I, uh…well, I used to live here when I was a boy.”
The fear and suspicion in the couple’s eyes fell away. The woman actually smiled at me and the man quit his protectiveness and returned to her side.
“Is that right?” the woman said. “How long ago was that?”
I shook my head again and sighed. “Forty-five years,” I answered.
“Wow,” the old man marveled. “Forty-five years, huh? You haven’t been back since then?”
I nodded. “That’s right.”
Then the woman spoke and completely blew me away. “Would you like to come inside and look around?”
Just before I left Seattle, I remember telling my wife Shelia how great it would be if the house was still there and wouldn’t it be a gas if I could actually go inside and look around. She smiled at  me, but did not respond, perhaps still a little angry at me for insisting she not come. I guess it was some crazy macho need I had to face all of this alone. So when the old woman offered me that look inside, I felt some guilt for denying Shelia the chance to share some of my past with me.
However, standing there on the front porch of the house on Hamlin Street, I also felt some decorum, a cursory show of manners. I actually heard myself decline the woman’s invitation. “No, I don’t want to impose on you. It’s enough just to see the place.”
“Nonsense,” the woman replied. “My husband and I would be happy to have you come inside and see your childhood again.” She paused with a sudden distant look in her eyes. “You know,” she went on. “It has been too long since we have been back home. We met as kids living in our village back in Japan. Gosh, that was sixty-years ago.”
Gratitude swelled in my heart and I was almost moved to tears again. Suddenly, I wanted to know these two people, thank them by their proper names. “Thank you so much,” my voice croaked. “I’m Roy. Roy Banner.”
She took my hand in her leathery grip. “Roy, it’s nice to meet you. I am Keiko. My husband’s name is Shiro. Please come inside.“
She turned to enter the house. I followed them inside. When I passed over the threshold, it felt like I had crossed through a time warp. We stood in the living room, and as I gazed around its small but cozy confines, a sudden image of me stretched out on the floor in front of our Magnavox TV slammed into my brain. The memory was very vivid and it was easy to imagine the theme songs for Gilligan’s Island or the Brady Bunch echoing in the stillness of the room. Keiko and Shiro merely stood off to one side and let me wonder at all those years gone by—which suddenly seemed like no time at all.
I did not want to be rude, but I was compelled to move further into the house. I turned around and saw the hallway that led back to my old bedroom. It was only a few steps away, but again, through the eyes of a child, it seemed to stretch into infinity. I was barely aware of myself walking to the end of it. When I finally did arrive at the door, a hush seemed to settle in the air, as if the act of opening that door would bring an audience of angels. I held my breath  and turned the doorknob. I stood silent for a few seconds, gazing about the room, overcome with so many images. I did not see the modern furniture the old couple had decorated with. Instead, I saw my old bed stretched below the window, filled with boyhood dreams. Over in the corner, my scarred desk sat on the floor, Peanuts comic books and Hardy Boys mysteries scattered on top of it. My dresser sat just inside the door and to the left, more bric-a-brac cluttered on its tarnished surface. Finally, I turned to face the closet. Would it still be there? I moved over and softly slid the door open.
When I was nine, I found a small hole at the back of the closet—a mouse had left it there. I widened it and fashioned a door to cover that space. It was my secret place, where I hid some of my more treasured items as a boy. When that awful summer  of 1970 ended and I was forced to go live with my Aunt, I completely forgot about my hiding  place. Over the years, I had many dreams of the house on Hamlin Street, and in one my most recent ones, I remembered the hole in the wall.
As I stood there in the semi-darkness, I hunkered to my knees and reached my hand down, searching along the back of the closet. When it ran across the little door, my breath caught in my throat. I found the latch and opened the tiny door. I reached inside and felt the valuable trinkets I buried there forty-five years ago.
I first pulled out an old tin box. A sheen of dust lay on it, thick and undisturbed. I opened the lid and my father’s voice suddenly spoke in my head, as if a radio had been turned on.
“Here, Roy. My dad gave me these when I was just about your age.” He handed me five silver-colored coins.  They dropped in my hand, clinking together with a dull sound. “Those are steel pennies,” my dad went on. “During World War II, they used steel instead of copper, which was needed for other things, you know, to supply the war effort. I guess they’re not worth much today, but when you get older, maybe time will bring them more value.”
I took the pennies out of the tin box and hefted them in my hand. Yes, dad was right. They were valuable now, but more than monetary worth. I reached back inside the mouse hole and brought out the remaining item. It was wrapped in a silk handkerchief. I unfolded the cloth. The Saint Christopher’s medallion that my mother used to wear lay inside. I remembered that I had taken it from her jewelry box the day after she died and squirreled it away in my secret place, as if it were a sacred token from beyond the grave. I knelt there in my old closet and began to cry. It was so good to be home. After a few minutes, I wiped my eyes and stood up, then turned and left my old room.
Keiko and Shiro were still waiting for me in the living room when I returned. I suddenly felt guilty in their presence, holding my plunder as if I had stolen something of theirs. But when I looked in their eyes, I knew I had nothing to worry about.
“Roy,” Shiro softly spoke. “We found your hiding place shortly after we moved in here. You should know that we are the only people who have lived here since you moved away. We did not disturb those things in your hand. We believe there is something honorable about a little boy’s secrets, don’t you think?”
I could only stand there and look at them as if they were part of that audience of angels I had imagined. Fresh tears rolled down my face. I went over to my new friends and hugged them, as if I finally had that one chance I missed to say goodbye to my parents.
They hugged me back.
**
It’s been three weeks since I got back from California. Sitting here in the quiet ambiance surrounding my desk, I close my eyes and think about what I’ve written. Shelia is taking a nap, having sensed that I wanted to be alone for a couple of hours. I can hear Troublesome Creek outside my window, speaking to me in its white water voice. Since I returned, I have brief moments when the tranquility of our house seems out of place, as if the noise and pollution of North Hollywood somehow feels more right to me.  Before I left, I gave Keiko and Shiro my address and asked them if they could write me once in a while, to keep me up to date on the old neighborhood. I really don’t expect them to. When I climbed into my Expedition and drove away, I knew I would probably never return to the house on Hamlin Street.
In a couple hours, my son Trevor will be home from school. I still haven’t mentioned to my family about the things I found in the back of my old closet. I think today I will finally share them with my boy, and perhaps together we will appreciated the wonderful time it is—being ten-years old.
REPLY:
Hi Gene, so glad to know that FanStory was an interesting site for you. I keep promising myself I’m going to submit a story one of these days. They go heavy on the poetry as well, which is not my forte, but it did make me think of you and all of your lovely prose.
Thank you for sending me this story. I’m honoured you’d think of me for giving some feedback. :)
As always it’s beautifully written and easy to follow. As always you manage to sneak a gut punch in there as well with the death of the parents. I should start to see these things coming now in your writing but you get me every time. lol After the reveal of that information, it suddenly feels like the stakes are so much higher than just a walk down memory lane. It was clever to lull people into thinking they knew what was going on, and then hitting them with that well into the story. It kind of changes the lens through which you view the entire story after that reveal.
The last paragraph was a neat tie in with ten year old Trevor and the passing on of a family tradition with what we assume will be the passing on of the steel coins. It also fills in a back story about the underlying prompt of going back home, with having a ten year old running around, reminding you of past days.
I think it’s great, Gene, and you should definitely submit it. Now I’m off to have a crack at my story that I’ve been writing in my head for months now. Got to nail that first sentence. lol

BRICS Expansion to Make West Recognize New World Order, De-Dollarization: UAE Professor
Tumblr media
BRICS Bloc to Benefit From Inducting New Members Like UAE and Saudi Arabia, Academic Says “The role of BRICS has been increasing during the last years and in the last decade,” Mohamed Badine El Yattioui, doctor of political science and assistant professor of international affairs and strategy in the College of Security and Global Studies at the American University in UAE, told Russia’s Tass news agency. The academic emphasized that “for the United Arab Emirates, it’s important to become part of the BRICS group,” which currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. He believes that the expansion will allow the bloc to put pressure on the West to recognize changes in the system of international relations. The admission of the UAE and other candidates will help BRICS to “push the Western countries towards accepting some modifications of the new world order, especially those regarding international trade, international political economy in general, currency and leaving the dollar,” El Yattioui elaborated. The professor highlighted that Saudi Arabia and the UAE have strong economies and high gross domestic product (GDP) and are offering BRICS many opportunities, especially regarding energy. “It is in the interest of BRICS to have them inside the group,” he remarked. Enlargement was one of the topics discussed by the foreign ministers of BRICS member states in Cape Town, South Africa, in June. The meeting was also attended by diplomats from 12 other nations that have expressed intentions to join the group of the largest developing economies. This year’s BRICS summit is scheduled to take place on Aug. 22–24 in Johannesburg. The hosting country’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, recently unveiled that the organization’s leaders will talk about its expansion. A total of 23 nations have so far submitted formal applications for membership, she said. Earlier in August, the Press Secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, admitted that “certain nuances exist” among the five current BRICS members regarding the bloc’s expansion and these will be discussed at the summit. He was referring to a report by Bloomberg, according to which China’s push for a rapid enlargement is facing opposition from India and Brazil. Do you think BRICS leaders will support the accession of new members at their upcoming meeting in Johannesburg? Share your expectations in the comments section below. Read the full article

COVID-19 Hits Hard, But Challenges BRICS
By and large, the coronavirus pandemic has taken a huge toll on Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). The pandemic, declared late January by the World Health Organization (WHO), allegedly originated (yet to be proved) from Wuhan city in China. However, the World Health Assembly on May 18-19 by a resolution agreed to launch an investigation into the origin of the disease, whose unyielding march across the globe since last year and has already left more than 320,000 dead. Statistics made available as at May 20, showed that Brazil (310,087) in South America, Russia (317,554) in Eastern Europe or compared to, say in the former Soviet region, India (118,447) and China (84,507) both in Asian region, and South Africa (19,137) in Africa.  It means South Africa, with a population 57 million, has one-fifth of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa. Further, assessing BRICS countries population in relation to the number of infections, Russia seems the worst spot among BRICS, and has taken the second highest in the world and that was followed in the third position by Brazil. Under a “pessimistic scenario”, the number of active cases could peak again when the expected “second wave of coronavirus” sets in and if strict precautions are not observed. The COVID-19 has shattered nearly all economies. But at the same time, just as the COVID-19 has offered opportunities, so it also presents significant challenges. In the world including BRICS countries, the outlook remains bleak. BRICS is interested in both, taking advantage of the emerging opportunities and dealing with the challenges. Experts have argued that BRICS members meet to discuss various global issues, and plan its joint collaborative projects on the global landscape. Comparatively, Russia, India and China, all these three still respond individually to varying opportunities and pursue different investment in the world. As experts noted, China and India lead in the pursuit of economic spheres of influence worldwide. Geography of investment largely explains why China and India seem to be leading, followed by Russia, among the five. With regard to coronavirus and the operations of WHO, Chinese President Xi Jinping, delivering a speech via video link at the opening of the World Health Assembly, pledges $2 billion to deal with COVID-19. According to an executive decree published in April on the official website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia contributed $1 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to fight the coronavirus. Figures unavailable for Brazil, India and South Africa. Still put them together, BRICS is an upcoming and developing force to reckon with. Thus on May 7, Russia’s Health Ministry held a meeting of BRICS countries via videoconference focusing, particularly, on the issue of the novel coronavirus pandemic discussed joint efforts needed by BRICS countries. It was held within the framework of Russia’s BRICS chair-ship. Participants from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa discussed at the meeting all aspects, including measures on liquidation of the novel coronavirus infection, and submitted report to BRICS Health Ministries. “It is planned that the online platform will provide partners with an opportunity to share BRICS countries’ experience and develop joint steps towards reaching a better understanding of the ways to liquidate the COVID-19 outbreak,” according to the report. The participating officials agreed that it is important to strengthen international cooperation, within the framework of which there has to be a transparent and timely exchange of information. During the discussions, the countries also agreed to continue providing mutual support in activities to prevent and treat the novel coronavirus infection COVID-19, as well as to create favorable conditions for the supply of deliveries of medications and diagnostic materials, immune-biological preparations and medical equipment. Under an “optimistic scenario”, the BRICS meeting by Health Ministers of BRICS countries pledged to adopt further collaborative steps as their collective contributions toward the eradication of the global pandemic. It is worth to say that BRICS has to accelerate the implementation of some of its earlier initiatives. Over the years, the BRICS has wanted to expand cooperation in the fight against infections and the joint production and use of vaccines. Cooperation on countering infectious diseases has long been a priority for BRICS. For instance, the final declaration of the 2015 BRICS summit in Ufa, Russia, contains instructions by the leaders to work on managing the risk of disease outbreaks. That declaration stated: “we commend the efforts made by the BRICS countries to contribute to enhanced international cooperation to support the efforts of countries to achieve their health goals, including the implementation of universal and equitable access to health services, and ensure affordable, good-quality service delivery while taking into account different national circumstances, policies, priorities and capabilities.” Last month for instance, BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs /International Relations held a video conference chaired by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Ernesto Araújo, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and South African Minister of International Relations Grace Naledi Pandor took part in the meeting. China and Russia have strong working relationship and both are members of BRICS. Russia objects to attempts by the United States to turn the World Health Organization (WHO) into a forum for settling political scores, Minister Lavrov said with colleagues during the video conference of BRICS Foreign Ministers held late April. Russia has been working closely together with China, and Russia has no reason to oppose China, according to Minister Lavrov. Key Highlights from that meeting included: • The BRICS nations agreed to allocate $15 billion to the New Development Bank (NDB) so that it could set up a special loan instrument to support the revival of economies and help meet the emergency expenses incurred for responding to the coronavirus pandemic. The BRICS nations further held discussions on ways to step up cooperation within the bloc to contain coronavirus pandemic, as well as to revive the economies that have received a major blow due to the travel restrictions and lockdown imposed in most countries to curb the spread of coronavirus. • The meeting underlined the need for reforms in the multilateral systems and stated that this was the way forward. The bloc reiterated its support towards the World Health Organization, stating that it is a very important and unique platform, which employs the best professionals from around the world, including from the United States. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on all the BRICS members to firmly stand by multilateralism, by the international system centered around the United Nations and by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. Throughout 2020, – under the theme “BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Shared Security and Innovative Growth” – Russia holds the BRICS pro tempore presidency. The emphasis of the Russian presidency is on promoting science, technology and innovation and digital economy and health, and strengthening cooperation in the fight against transnational crimes. In addition to those, dozens of academic, sporting, cultural and artistic events planned for the year, culminates with the final BRICS Summit on July 21−23 in St Petersburg, chosen as the venue in accordance with the Presidential Executive Order No. 380 of 15 August 2019. BRICS is the group composed by the five major emerging countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, – which together represent about 42% of the population, 23% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 30% of the territory and 18% of the global trade. Narendra Modi at G20: PM's exhaustive push for multilateralism runs up towards nation's capability constraints
http://tinyurl.com/y6zsqcm9 Narendra Modi has been a busy man on the G20 summit in Osaka. In his two days on the Japanese metropolis, the Indian prime minister has participated in a single multilateral, two trilateral and several other bilateral conferences on the sidelines of the 14th version. Narendra Modi with Shinzo Abe on Thursday. Twitter/@narendramodi Modi has joined Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and US president Donald Trump in a trilateral grouping earlier than assembly Chinese language president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin in one other. He additionally joined a gathering of BRICS leaders (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in a 3rd session and held a number of bilats with Abe, Trump, South Korea president Moon Jae-in, Saudi Arabia crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German chancellor Angela Merkel, amongst others. The logic driving Modi’s hyperactivism on the G20 summit is India’s push for multilateralism that has come to interchange “strategic autonomy” because the cornerstone of India’s overseas coverage. India seeks to advertise a “multipolar world” with “many facilities of affect and stability”, as Overseas Secretary Vijay Gokhale stated in a media briefing submit Modi’s meeting with Xi and Putin. As a rising energy that should steadiness personal capability constraints with an growing ambition to guard its broadening pursuits, affect worldwide affairs and execute its function as a benign maritime pressure in Indo-Pacific to uphold the rules-based order, India doesn’t wish to get sucked into the vortex of the good energy sport between the US and China and consequently have to decide on sides. New Delhi feels alignment with one of many two nice powers or remaining constricted inside a particular strategic framework might limit its strategic choices and show deleterious to its self-interest. The necessity to chart its personal path whilst India nurtures relationships with competing powers arises as a lot from India’s present strategic imperatives as an embedded perception in personal exceptionalism rooted in civilisational statecraft. This will have innately knowledgeable Modi’s overseas coverage. This continuity has been famous by students resembling Aparna Pande, whose ebook From Chanakya to Modi traces an ideational hyperlink in India’s journey from Arthashastra to the current. If we glance carefully at Modi’s engagements, we might notice the distinct try by New Delhi to hold out a balancing act. The objects on agenda, too, level in direction of such a conclusion. Typically, India remained the one string threading competing camps which are working to constrain one another’s affect. The imaginative and prescient statements launched post-meeting highlighted the incongruity whereas India’s place remained undefined and ambiguous. Modi’s bilateral with Abe and subsequent trilateral additionally involving Trump — three of the 4 members of the quadrilateral grouping — centered on “free and open Indo-Pacific” and “high quality infrastructure” — euphemisms for the coercive infrastructure promoted by China which are ensnaring the smaller Indo-Pacific nations in a debt-trap. Because the overseas secretary said during his media briefing after the meet, “The principle subject of the dialogue was the Indo-Pacific about how the three nations can work collectively by way of connectivity, by way of infrastructure, by way of making certain that peace and safety is maintained and by way of working collectively to construct upon this new idea in order that it advantages the area as an entire and for the three nations in fact.” During Modi’s trilateral with Putin and Xi, nevertheless, the main focus was on globalisation, on sustaining “liberalisation of commerce”, “free buying and selling system, an open buying and selling system, a rules-based buying and selling system, to oppose the tendency in direction of protectionism and to provide a correct path to WTO reform.” As nations which have benefitted immensely from globalisation and free actions of products and companies, China and India’s widespread floor right here was evident, and it isn’t exhausting to think about that the assertion takes a potshot at Trump’s protectionist measures that search to reorient the worldwide geo-economic panorama. What we see right here, subsequently, is an try by India which will appear inherently contradictory, however is knowledgeable by a strategic posture that seeks to form the long run for a billion folks. So on the one hand Modi joins Abe and Trump in selling rules-based worldwide order to make sure peace, stability and prosperity in Indo-Pacific, alternatively India finds widespread floor with China whereas battling the shenanigans of a US president who’s grievance narrative on commerce deficits, tariffs and “reciprocal commerce” threatens to push world economic system right into a commerce struggle. This fork is much more evident in India’s refusal to signal the declaration on free movement of information throughout borders the place India discovered itself boxed with China on one aspect and the developed nations on the opposite. Right here, India is kind of clearly deviating from its quad companions Japan and the US in upholding information because the “new type of wealth” and has burdened on information localisation in full contradiction with Abe and Trump’s statements who’ve known as for Knowledge Free Movement with Belief (DFFT) mechanism to make sure free movement of information throughout borders. India has additionally burdened on the necessity for framing guidelines on information below the jurisdiction of WTO. To quote FS Gokhale’s words during the briefing submit BRICS engagement, “From our perspective information is a serious problem, it is a matter which we’re additionally domestically taking a look at the place worldwide rule-making is happening, our view and the view of the opposite BRICS nations is that this needs to be mentioned throughout the WTO context and never exterior the WTO context and that information additionally must keep in mind the necessities of creating nations.” On commerce, subsequently, and on administration of digital wealth, India discovered extra widespread floor with China — its strategic rival — than with strategic companions Japan and the US. This contradiction was obvious much more on the query on 5G the place Modi gave no dedication to Trump on whether or not India will preserve Chinese language agency Huawei out of its 5G trials: a requirement the US has positioned on its allies and companions, together with India. Nonetheless, if we notice Modi’s phrases throughout his bilateral with Trump fastidiously, we might notice a willingness to have interaction with the US on this problem. “The prime minister outlined that we’re going to be a billion customers of this expertise and in that sense India is the second largest market on the earth. The best way India strikes or the way in which no matter selections India makes will basically decide the way in which the worldwide pattern will go. And subsequently the prime minister stated it is vital that we collaborate,” said the foreign secretary on the briefing. This willingness to have interaction whereas charting its personal path just isn’t Modi’s imprimatur on overseas coverage, however the continuity of India’s strategic tradition. Apparently, a few of Modi’s bilats with heads of rival powers held on G20 sidelines are shortly to be repeated, maybe extra elaborately, within the coming few months. The prime minister will travel to Vladivostok in September for the jap financial discussion board, appearing on an invite from Putin, he’s scheduled to host Xi in October for the return leg of Wuhan casual meet and he might meet Trump once more in September. If the US, the beleaguered world power that seeks to take care of its maintain over world affairs and occupy the motive force’s seat in digital transformation of industrialisation, China and Russia current the opposite axis that seeks to form the contours of worldwide economic system and problem America’s function as the only real hegemon. It’s instructive to notice, subsequently, that Modi is searching for to have interaction with all three leaders shortly after his conferences with Trump, Xi and Putin on the sidelines of G20. In some methods, overseas coverage below Modi 2.zero may be interpreted as India’s effort to recuperate some misplaced floor as a normative energy as professor Ian Corridor wrote in his paper Narendra Modi and India’s normative energy. Corridor’s competition is that in his effort to revive India’s standing as a “normative energy” and a vishwaguru — a state with the affect to outline what behaviour is regular and fascinating in worldwide relations — Modi must confront India’s capacity constraints, handle India’s “interactions with strategic companions and rivals, in addition to its vexed relations with the opposite states of South Asia.” At G20, we maybe noticed one iteration of this effort.
