Black Cake is the debut novel from Charmaine Wilkerson and an early release from @bookofthemonth "Benny has been estranged from her family for eight years. Her brother Byron is still angry that she walked away from the family. Now their mother has died and they must put aside their differences. Their mother has left a long recording for them. And one last Black Cake. And many surprising secrets..." This is a wonderful story from Wilkerson. We get Eleanor's story from the recording. And we get Benny's perceptions - and Byron's perceptions - and we see just how far apart they are. There are secrets - they all have secrets. Some more shocking than others. Sometimes it's easy to forget that your parents had a life before you - and that there are many things you don't know. Wilkerson touches on a lot of issues especially just how messy family relationships can be and the difficulty in communicating hurt. If you are struggling with sibling and/or family relationships you will really relate to this book. I loved the ending. It's not a happily ever after but Wilkerson gives us some resolution. And she shows us just how beautiful and mixed up a family can be. Fans of a good family epic will love this one. Great debut from Wilkerson. #blackcake #charmainewilkerson #bookofthemonth #ballentinebooks #familysecrets #allthefeels #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookish #bookreview #hardcover #bookcover #bookhaul #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CZO-1m9LZod/?utm_medium=tumblr

And what is a Hobbit? Hobbits are little people, smaller than dwarves. They love peace and quiet and good tilled earth. They dislike machines, but they are handy tools. They are nimble but don’t like to hurry. They have sharp eyes and ears. They are inclined to be fat. They wear bright colors but seldom wear shoes. They like to laugh and eat (six meals a day) and drink. They like parties and they like to give and recieve presents. They inhabit a land they call The Shire, a place between the River Brandywine and the Far Downs. The Hobbit is a story of these delightful creatures - a story complete in itself yet full of portent.

Project Hail Mary is the new book from Andy Weir, who wrote the bestseller - The Martian. "Ryland Grace is the lone survivor on a last-ditch mission to save the earth and all of humanity. But he doesn't remember that right now - just that he's a long way from Earth and it a room with two corpses. He realizes that he faces an impossible task but with some unexpected help, he may just be able to save the world." If you're a long time reader of science fiction, this story will feel familiar. It reminded me of the recent books - Saturn Run and Seveneves. What Weir does that's different is to put a Middle-school science teacher as humanity's last hope. Weir does an excellent job building the world of the surprise visitor. If you were a fan of the sheer amount of science in The Martian, you will love this book. There's even more here - biology, alien biology, DNA, orbital mechanics and relativity. For me the constant science detracts from the story and feels a little like filler. I like the ending. Weir takes you one way - throws a curveball and gives us another ending. It's an interesting one to envision. #projecthailmary #andyweir #sciencefiction #savetheplanet #ballentinebooks #netgalley #advancedreaderscopy #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookish #bookreview #hardcover #novel #bookaddict #bookcover #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #thriller #alienfiction (at Irmo, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/COIO6Xor51P/?igshid=donz011hqv3s

Serpentine is Book 36 in the Alex Delaware series from Jonathan Kellerman. “Milo gets a cold case and calls Alex to help. A wealthy woman wants to know the story of her mother and thinks it is linked to a decades-old murder. A woman was found in a burned out car with a bullet hole in her head. No witnesses, no evidence and no answers from any of the detectives that worked it before. And the more they uncover - the more it seems like there’s still danger...” This is the first cold-case that Milo has worked. And it’s atypical for most cold-cases. No DNA or forensics - just old fashioned detective work. Kellerman always looks at the deeper psychology and motive of a killer? Why did this happen? And the monsters are often hiding in plain sight 😮 Took a bit to get used to all the names and characters in the case but once l did l was hooked. The last third is fast-paced with a surprise twist and ending. I also love the parts about Robin and her guitar craftsmanship. Another great story from Kellerman. Thanks to @netgalley and @randomhouse for the arc. #serpentine #jonathankellerman #alexdelaware #lacrimefiction #netgalley #randomhouseballantine #ballentinebooks #bookstagram #bookshelves #bookswithcharacter #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookreview #hardcover #bookcollector #bookhaul #bookspines #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #crimefiction #thriller #bookcollection https://www.instagram.com/p/CJv7F5DAQ-_/?igshid=1cn4ewlxlak5a

Malibu Rising is the highly anticipated new book from Taylor Jenkins Reid. The plot is simple. Everyone is getting ready for the Rivas party - the biggest party of the year in Malibu. But who are the Rivas? How did they get to this point? That's the journey that TJR takes us on. And she does a wonderful job writing these characters - Nina, Jay, Hud, Kit and Mick...and Casey. Nina, the surf model - always sacrificing for everyone else - Jay, the professional surfer - wanting to be the best at something - Hud - abandoned as a baby, now with a big secret. And Kit - the baby sister, not willing to push yet. Mick Riva is a character you want to like but good luck. He abandons his family multiple times but still believes they want to spend time with him. He has his own little narrative going in his head. TJR nails that. There are many secondary characters here. They seem sprinkled in to give the story some variety and some comic relief, especially at the party. And what a party! 🤯TJR keeps racheting up the insanity to the very end. I like the ending. Families are messy but still family. If you ever stood up to a parent and said "No more!" you will appreciate the final confrontation and the way there. Another great story and great characters from TJR. Fans will want to read this right away. Thanks to @netgalley and Ballantine Books for the advanced copy. #maliburising #taylorjenkinsreid #netgalley #netgalleyreviewer #ballentinebooks #contemporaryfiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookish #bookreview #hardcover #novelsuspect #bookcover #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #familydrama https://www.instagram.com/p/CPqFVLNrNPe/?utm_medium=tumblr
