Oh~ darling BananaBoi. This was a commission I completed for a dear friend of mine of his most adorable dragon. This was a tricky pose for a banescale with the gliders tertiary gene but I like the result! I want to experiment with more fun backgrounds like this in the future.

more ancient+'s (first set here), this time featuring aethers, sandsurges, banescales (a second time), and dusthides
For the aether, I just wanted to really lean into the mothiness... and make a hatchling that doesn't hide its extra pair of legs. seriously, why does the actual aether hatchling hide its extra pair of legs... that's like, the Whole Point. I also thought it'd be fun to play with primary/secondary placement, so the aether's wings actually use its primary
Sandsurges, uhhh.... this is the most radical departure from the canon, because I kind of can't justify anything about the canon sandsurges. If they're supposed to be burrowers, why do they have cheetah bodies? Or the big clunky horns? And if they're supposed to be sand sharks, why do they have TWO sails when one would sell the shark-ness more? So this version features big mole mitts and monitor bod, with a single really BIG sail.
Banescale (2) - just trying to lean into (what i think) was the theme of the banescales, which is that they're "demonic" dragons compared to coatls being "angelic". So made the tail more obviously a trident and gave it crazy little grabby hands on its wings, and tore them up like aberrations. it turned out looking a lot like a man. sorry.
Dusthides... I'm not really sure... what's going on with the canon dusthides? they look like they're trying to be isopods and pangolins and armadillos. So here's my take on that. The armor plates are prehensile and can fold upwards. this is pretty much just a vestigial feature of them originally being wings because it's not like they can fly with them lol. again experimenting with secondary placement by having the armored legs, head, and tail tip be the secondary. it doesn't curl up into a perfect ball, but neither do pangolins. i also made it fluffy because i like fluffy dragons. it can't wear clothes anyway. it ended up turning out kind of centipede-y
i feel like auraboas and aberrations are like... fine. Any changes i would make to them would be pretty minimal (mostly I just want shrinkage on the auraboa wings and more exciting prim/sec placement on the abes) so i'm probably not going to do ancient+'s of them

I know, it's the "in thing" to hate on dusthides in general right now, but I really just cannot get behind this breed at all. so here I am, salt blog, to tear into them and let off some of my frustrations.
I've tried. I've looked at people who have made interesting dusties, I've tried to mess around with making one of my own, but I just cannot get into their weird heads and the strange shape of them. you can argue from dragonhome and back that it makes sense for a digging dragon to not have any horns or antlers, but it doesn't change the fact that the shape looks really strange, and all too smooth, especially for a dragon that is meant to be at least somewhat armored. the encyclopedia says that they look "rigid," but they don't! they actually look highly flexible! nothing about them screams "rigid!" they look so soft in fact, that they don't look like they have any scales at all. like if I were to touch them it'd be smooth, albeit very dry, soft skin.
everyone argues against their wings and I do, too. if they supported the ball rolling thing, it'd be different--but the backs aren't armored, they're actually meant for FLIGHT even if it's short, and would rip too easy, given their lifestyle. they would also get in the way of the ball mechanic. if they could work in tandem with the tail, it'd be fine, but they have to be tucked IN, under the tail. why even have them, then? especially if they'd be a hassle for squeezing into tight spaces? gosh! "they brace tunnels for cave-ins" HEY BUCKO... WHY DO YOU THINK WE BUILD TUNNEL SUPPORTS.... also I don't care. we were promised the option of very varied body types, and this is the most bog standard "dragon" you can get, even if it's peeled. it would have been SO COOL if the hide on the back was how the secondary gene was expressed, and the primary was on the belly/flank/arms, but... alas.
just... even aethers. I love aethers lol. but their second pair of arms should have been bigger. they should have had more eyes. like. ancients come out too fast, and could probably use at least a little more workshopping.
I also hate their giant singular claw, especially when you consider the fact that most animals with claws like that have multiple toes, instead of one big toe and a tiny thumb. sure. it's meant for digging, but it looks almost painful to have such utter lack of maneuverability, for digging, and ESPECIALLY walking. it like, helps to have toes that flex, not giant shovels for hands! with claws like that, it'd be more suitable for them to lay on their bellies and push themselves forward. the feet also just look strange. I can't get over it. I absolutely despise how, especially on the hatchling, they try to make the feet look "cute" by giving them pseudo paw pads. it looks gross and tacky! I can't stand to look at them!!
at least with breeds like banescales it's just a matter of personal taste, and not really feeling excited about them. it's so sad to me that I actually hate dusthides. man. I know not every breed can be a hit, some things will be a flop, but yikes. didn't expect to actually hate an entire breed. oh well. don't gotta own them.

breeds whose hatchling poses will show off more of its body and not obscured by folds will make a killing off skins/accents. some of them (not all) are
coatls (for sure)
snappers
dusthides
aethers
aberrations
auraboas
skydancers
for a bad time? banescales, spirals, obelisks
here's a semi-interesting fact : guardian and mirror hatchlings (and their adult forms) are one of the more ancient psds and you can see a very different shading style (more gradient steps) compared to what we have after, say, snappers! 2008 for mirrors, specifically.
Tumblr media
yeah, the mirror artwork is in partway through high school. lol

Okay I love adult banescales but I absolutely can't vouch for hatchling banescales I'm sorry. Such a bad choice when trying to convince people to like ancients more. Literally any of the other baby ancients would have been better... and now that I've said that, everyone please consider: Baby Gaolers

Tell me about Cake! (The dragon, not the food)
Tumblr media
CAKE is a rowdy lady who upon hatching from the whole Banescale-eggs-frozen-in-time thing was adopted by the clan. Her favourite thing ever were BIRTHDAYS and she decided it is her life's goal to make sure EVERYONE feels as awesome on theirs as she always did. She is a party planner of many talents, capable of organising anything from a small hatchling's cute themed party to a music-blasting teenage shindig to a ''respectable'' do for the elderly.
Her party trick is 'lighting the candles'...HER candles that is. She can shoot water jets out of her quills HEHE
Tumblr media
(when I was thinking of this epic idea I thought she was fire flight so that she'd have flaming candles LOL oops oh well)
she is a lesbian and her partner is RAT
