WIP Wednesday Sentences: Thicket

Last one for the week, just in time for Wednesday to come around again. Thicket is a short story that I wrote a few Years ago as part of a a NaNo collection, and now I don't really know what I want to do with it. For @eriquin and @phantom-z0ne

The crawl under the bushes was darker now, less inviting. She twisted and turned to follow the scuffed marks of her own hands back towards the parlor and her sister. She hoped her mother had not called them in yet. She didn’t want to get Annemarie in trouble for not knowing where Kimmie was. She sent thoughts towards her sister, willing her to still be there straightening the teacups or contemplating a new knotwork pattern in the branches. It felt like she had been crawling forever when she finally saw the familiar tunnel and tumbled out through the back door into the parlor. She quickly took stock of her surroundings, seeing a startled Annemarie frozen mid teacup sitting at their little round table.

“Oh there you are! I was wondering. I figured you went out to find treasures again. Momma wants us both in for piano practice in 45 minutes. Kimmie plopped down at the table and brushed herself off, scattering dust from her jeans and hands.

“I found something in the thicket. You have to come with me tomorrow and see!”

Annemarie looked down at her own pristine jeans. “I don’t know…”

“Oh come on, trust me it’s worth it. Besides, I found this one thing, who knows what else there may be to find. The thicket is way bigger than I thought it was. We might even be able to build more rooms like the parlor.”

The lure of new rooms was too much for Annemarie and she nodded in affirmation. “OK. I will wear my painter pants and bring my map making kit. I can draw new trails through the thicket and we can get as dirty as we need.”

“Lets go in early and do piano now…”

“so Mamma will be in a good mood and…”

“We can play more tomorrow.” The girls spoke in almost perfect unison, interlocking their suggestion and laughing at how close their thoughts were. They gathered their things and left the thicket to it’s own devices. Until tomorrow anyway.
