6 reasons why “Barbelle” will have you singing

After what seems like an eternity… Barbelle is finally available for the world to see! The webseries is the brainchild of Karen Cox and Gwenlyn Cumyn, who play girlfriends and bandmates, Veronica and Alice, who rise to fame only to have it destroy their relationship. After two years of Instagraming and vlogging their every move, Alice breaks up with Veronica, just before they are supposed to start writing their new album. Oops. This supremely smart and funny webseries has a serious side, and shows itself to you when the time is right. As if you needed a reason to watch Barbelle, I’m giving you six.   1. Karen Cox as Veronica Knox is perfection: Cox may not be as familiar of a face as her co-star, but be prepared to enjoy the hell out of her. Cox plays Veronica as a snarking, self-obsessed diva one moment, but will strip her bare and show you Veronica’s aching heart the next. It’s a masterful performance. Cox has impeccable comedic timing, and I hope we get to see much more of her in the future. 2. Gwenlyn Cumyn is captivating. Viewers will recognize Cumyn from her leading role on the A4O webseries, but freed from the confines of her webcam, Cumyn gets to really strut her stuff. Infatuated with new scenester Lulu (the very fun Cynthia Hicks) and conflicted about her love for longtime girlfriend and bandmate, Veronica, Cumyn’s Alice has just the right balance of wanting and waiting. 3. The supporting cast is hilarious. From the blustering blowhard Richard (AJ Vaage), to the no-nonsense manager Karen (Naomi Gaskin), the supporting cast hits the right notes and provides a solid background to these feuding exes.   4. The music rocks. “Oh please ask about me, ask about me.” I dare you not to get these songs stuck in your head.   5. It’s written, directed, and produced by women. Cox and Cumyn are both writers and producers for the show. Cox directed an episode, while Kelly Paoli directed the rest. The dialogue is razor sharp, the direction full of female and queer gaze, and don’t even get me started on the costumes. Le crush.   6. It’s You’re The Worst for lesbians. If you are a fan of You’re the Worst, you’ll love Barbelle. Alice and Veronica are not your average heroines. I’m gonna stick with webseries bc I feel like most people here already know of the popular queer TV shows! there are tons but here are some that I know and love:All For One // dorky bi is crushing hard on her roommate who’s a lesbian and two of their friends are also queer and in a relationship, there’s also characters who are genderqueer/trans and pan/demi/ace and has lots of feminism and lady kisses!Barbelle // two gals are a famous pop duo who were dating and break up but are forced to keep working together! super cute and wholesomeCarmilla obvs // there’s a vampire girl and a human girl and they fall in love the end (there are also other queer and gender-nonconforming characters!)Nothing Much To Do/Lovely Little Losers // modern adaptation of Shakespeare, has wholesome mlm characters who get together and are adorable, also in the sequel series there are wlw! tbh it’s been a while since i’ve watched this so sorry for the super vague deetsThe March Family Letters // modern adaptation of Little Women, has one of the sisters falling in love with a cute girl and they’re adorbs and in love AND another sister is ace and that’s talked about explicitly in the series! also there’s great representation of social anxietyokay I lied, I do have two recs for kinda lesser-known TV shows!Degrassi: Next Class // has a BUNCH of queer characters but notably, the former “popular girl/boy-toy” character comes out and is now in the most adorable relationship (bonus: her gf is a syrian immigrant and muslim, and the show talks about those things!) AND one of the characters discovers that they’re non-binary and their journey to discovering that is beautifulAndi Mack // one of the characters comes out as gay and so far not much has happened but worth mentioning bc it’s the first show on Disney to have a young character come out! side note, main character is mixed and played by a mixed actor and that doesn’t happen often so it’s awesome!

BABY I’LL BE THEEEEEEEEEREREREREREREREEEEEEEE last movie i watched: i think it was this movie called fairhaven about a kid who gets sent to gay conversion therapy [yikes......] and when he comes back he has to navigate his relationship with his old boyfriend which, like, i was kinda dubious about, but i gave it a shot because people said there was a happy ending and the trailer looked good?? turns out they put almost all the good footage in the trailer and there’s maybe like two minutes of the entire movie i actually liked LOL the acting was good but idk the writing was... eh? also i hated how long the conversion therapy scenes were i had to skip over those because i just couldn’t do it so basically i would not recommend it unless you can find the two good minutes of the movie [which to be fair were REALLY FUCKING GOOD i mean my queer ass is absurdly weak for sleepy morning cuddles idk what you want from me] last show  watched: haven’t really had the time or emotional/mental capacity for proper tv show watching lately but i did start watching this webseries called Barbelle [it totally counts] which is about lesbian pop stars and honestly what more of a pitch could you need go watch it right now when did i start this blog: i wanna say i made it late 2010 and started using it mid 2011 but like what are dates, time is a construct, IDK what do i post: idk lol. i guess you’d call this clusterfuck a multi-fandom blog?? right now there’s a lot of skam, check please, brooklyn 99, the get down, various other gay shit, the usual Other blogs: I'm a tiny bit obsessed with sideblogs oops. let’s see what are the ones i actually want linked out there... so i’ve got an aesthetic blog, a collab blog i run with my writing partner in crime and spouse @boxesfullofthoughts, a SKAM fic rec blog i co-run with a bunch of other people now lol, a review blog i run with lyds and @pronouncingitwang we don’t really post on anymore but w/e it exists, and more private blogs than i care to admit do i get asks: not that often nah average sleep: lol lucky number: 28 dream job: the DREAM dream job [like, top tier goals] is to write stories and live like a hermit but the “this might not be my ~most ideal scenario in the most perfect world~ career but i know i would be happy and fulfilled doing this” dream job is communications in public health [preferably at a nonprofit/ngo] food: noodles! last book i read: Clifford’s Blues, had to read it for class and i’d actually highly recommend it! It’s about a gay black jazz musician imprisoned in Dachau during the Holocaust and you can tell the writer really did his research. lots of interesting things done with style and form too. it’s quite heavy though so be warned what i’m wearing: an apollo/nasa shirt i got from the kennedy space center, jeans, socks my SO gave me, and my favorite flannel 8] favorite fandoms: my cynical bitter ass thinks all fandoms kinda suck on some level lol i’m sorry i’m such a rude fucker but i guess i’ll answer this with favorite fandom i’ve written for? in which case best and worst fandom simultaneously goes to SKAM, worst because the fic culture in this fandom was really stressful and rough on my mental health at times back when i was still actively writing [rip don’t ask me why i’m not writing now believe me i want to so badly but my life is a MESS] and i’m just in general not a huge fan of the level of entitlement and harassment i see leveled toward other writers [which of all the fandoms i’ve written for probably has to be the absolute ugliest] but also best because i’ve met some of my favorite people through writing for the fandom i would otherwise not have gotten to know, which makes up for 100% of the bullshit and then some. so... yeah sorry this is kinda not a very positive answer i just figured i’d be as honest as i could

“Slo Pitch” is the LGBTQ softball comedy webseries you’ve been waiting for

Softball and lesbians – a classic combination. They go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Like Emily and Amy. Like gals and pals. You get where I’m going with this. Slo Pitch is a new series brought to you by some of the same folks behind Barbelle (Karen Knox and Gwenlyn Cumyn) plus Erin Carter and Michael Schram, and was created and directed by J. Stevens. The series follows a hopelessly bad softball team, The Brovaries, with an intense team captain who keeps putting her wedding to her long-suffering girlfriend on hold until her team can score a victory. The team consists of a rag-tag group of LGBTQ folks (and a straight girl!) who are mostly in it for the after-practice beers. Thankfully, there’s some new blood on the team that could help them reach their goal in defeating the Toronto Blue Gays, their rival team (which includes Coupleish and Carmilla actor Kaitlyn Alexander). That is if they can keep the drama to a minimum.
