Been working on fixing up this Cherry Jam doll
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the before, as your can see her hair’s all frizzy coming out out of her pony tail
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here’s the after!
If you’re also wondering about the drastic change in color like I was, I’m pretty sure this doll has heat activated color change hair? So the color changed while I was washing it. anyway, she still has yellow marker all over her face, but I’ll fix that today hopefully
Tumblr media
Bonus Barbie fashionista doll who’s hair I was fixing up. It’s some kind of cheap hair so it’s weird texture but I’m doing my best to style it
I’m hoping the conditioner will soften it a bit
I adore her crimps lol

Okay NOW Discord is actually done.
He's a Neighthan Rot base with a Clawd arm, a Heath arm, vampire cam legs, and a whole lot of custom sculpting. It's nice to finally have him as a complete doll again after sitting around in my parts bin for the better part of a decade.
I do plan to make him a custom outfit eventually, but I feel like if he lived in a universe where he was expected to wear clothes regularly, his day-to-day style would just be "looks like thrift store threw up on him". Or whatever the Barbie fashionistas line is doing nowadays.

Rise of Red Doll Review
Putting this under a cut because it's going to be long.
So, I got the Rise of Red singing Red doll NiB (new in box) off of eBay.
First off, the box was impossible. Getting her out was mostly easy, but there were these little plastic things keeping her head in the plastic backing for her head (hard to explain without showing but I didn't think to film the unboxing.) I needed to have my brother get his pocket knife to get her out of the box. Yes, I will acknowledge that Monster High and Ever After High dolls had these same plastic tidbits in the backs of their heads, but they only had two plastic tidbits while Red had three, and there usually wasn't a piece of moulded plastic covering the back half of their heads. She also did not come with a hairbrush, which is kind of irritating, but I guess that's what Barbie does so I'll allow it.
Now for the doll herself
Tumblr media
Her hair is super long. It's long enough to reach the tops of her thighs. It's also crimped kind of like D2 Uma's hair was. She has these weird painted-on edges.
Her face looks like Kylie but not like Kylie, if that makes sense. Like they took Kylie as Red and edited her until she was slightly uncanny valley
Her clothes are a mere one layer, which is kind of to be expected for Descendants dolls. I got the doll with her original punk outfit and am sad to report that it does not have her crest, likely due to the velcro on the back of her jacket.
All of the designs of her jacket are printed on rather than layers, which is also to be expected.
Her shirt is just a bit too short for her high-waisted pants. You can see in the pictures that the holes of her speaker and visible between the hemline of her shirt and the waistline of her pants.
She has a belt with a black heart buckle, but the buckle is also not her crest.
She has chunky bright red platforms that do kind of have her crest if you lift up the leg of her pants to look, but it's a poor excuse for her crest, being solid red, having the lightning strike in the wrong position, and being very hard to see.
Now, for the doll as a doll
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Number one, I scared myself shitless as I was trying to pull off her inconvinient jacket and accidentally pressed the button on her chest, causing her to sing quite loudly. And then I noticed something quite infuriating;
See that? yes, there are two tiny plastic tabs keeping her shirt attached to her pants. So I had to go get the scissors.
Her arms and legs are one-jointed, meaning her has moving hip joints and moving shoulder joints, everything else is fixed. Meaning she is going to struggle to do her epic jumps. A tragedy
The battery can be accessed through a small compartment in her inner left thigh using a small phillip's head screwdriver.
Overall, her design feels very Barbie-esque, which I guess I expected from Mattel.
But, here's my final test of quality
Do other doll clothes fit Red? For this, I used a G1 Mal, Dracubecca wearing Ghoulia's clothes, Legacy Day Briar Beauty, some random Barbie clothes, and Namaari. I was originally going to do more but I got so sick of getting jumpscared by the music that I decided to forgo that idea. Maybe I'll test her against G3 Twyla, Porter Geiss, and generic Cassandra another day.
Test one, Ghoulia's dress (plus a Ghouls Rule Frankie boot)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Results; Fail. Did not close down the back, was honestly a nightmare to put on due to Red's non-detachable hands
Test two; Briar Beauty's Legacy Day Dress
Tumblr media
Results; Fail. Didn't velcro down the back and also jumpscared myself again trying. Didn't bother with the shoes since MH and EAH shoes are the exact same
Test three; Namaari
Tumblr media
Reults; Partial success. Namaari's clothes were a bit baggy but fit. Her boots, due to Namaari having flat feet and Red having those doll high heel feet, did not fit
Bonus picture of Namaari wearing Red's clothes
Tumblr media
Test four; random Barbie clothes (Fashionista line, I believe she was from the first Fashionista series and petite)
Tumblr media
Results; Success, though I'm not sure if yellow is her colour. Thoughts?
Test five; G1 Mal
Tumblr media
Results; Partial success. Clothes did not fit at all but the boots did fit
Conclusions
Objectively, this doll's quality would be a step down from the G1 Descendants doll quality if not for the dragon Mal I have downstairs, which also has arms in fixed positions. I also do not like how loud her music is. My parents are napping downstairs and I had to hide Red under my pillow every time she went off, because I was genuinely afraid she would wake them. That's how loud she is. Also, I'm skeptical about this doll being thirty dollars retail. EAH dolls were only twenty and far higher quality
If you want clothes for Red, I think petite Fashionista Barbie clothes might be a good bet.
I wish she had a hairbrush
She is not allowed to join my other dolls until that battery is removed
I am happy to have her, don't get me wrong, the multiple jumpscared just put me in a bad mood

Finally folded and got a Barbie membership because the pink Gala premier doll is irresistible. Finally happy to see some very "Barbie" Barbaras out there, since we have had a plague of Basic Boring Bland™ Barbies for so, so long. I get that they were trying to make Barbie more "relatable" after Lammilly came out, but it got so stale and boring for so long.
I haven't really bothered with like, 99.99% of Barbie fashionistas, but I appreciate this new one that's coming out a lot. I would have preferred the closed mouth Millie sculpt but she's cute.
Tumblr media
It seems with Barbie Extra getting phased out we're also getting Barbie Deluxe Style which I think looks like a pretty good release - so far, anyways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can definitely see myself getting #2 (with the prosthetic leg) and #4 (with the braids). I think their faces are really cute and I like their outfits. #1 I think would have benefitted from open-hand gloves like the Gala doll and I would have definitely switched a few other things around and #2 is a Millie with a closed mouth so I already like her more for that, but I don't think the clunky necklace with a babydoll dress and short sleeve top looks very cohesive... I might still get her, but I wish they went with a heart pendant, dropped the dress' waistline down, and have her long sleeves if not ditching the shirt altogether. I like the pantyhose and shoes, though. If I get her, I might put her into the "Barbiecore," "Tenniscore," or "Spring Date" Barbiestyle fashion packs, though.
There's also this stunning delight that's went for preorder recently, too.
Tumblr media
I changed positions at work and went from salaried or hourly so I think I might preorder her once my paycheck for my new position kicks in. I think $75 is a bit pricy for her but I do really, really like her. She seems more like a $50 release but Mattel loves gouging out our pockets.

A project I really want to do.
My Froggy Stuff on YouTube made a Wednesday Addams inspired Barbie doll, and I am obsessed with it. (Yes; I am currently rewatching Wednesday as I am writing this.)
Tumblr media
She used a curvy fashionista's head (number 188, in fact) for this project, and my only gripe is that she has a regular Made to Move body and not a petite one. (To be fair, I'm bad with timelines, so the appropriate petite Barbie Looks dolls might not have been out.) Honestly, I think it only bugs me because I know that Jenna Ortega is a small person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I could make my own doll, I'd use these (try to use them is more accurate, I'm not entirely sure if the colors match or not.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as outfits go, there are options, even if they on the cheap side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... yea.

Behind the Scenes: Rumiko Takahashi
This idea bounced around in my head for a while, and I finally decided to take the plunge!
Not only is Rumiko Takahashi the creator of my favorite manga/anime, Inuyasha, which introduced me to the entire genre and sparked my interest in all things Japan, she's the best selling female comic artist in history. And since I'd made custom dolls of so many of her characters, I thought she was worthy of a doll of her own. Plus, when I heard of her honor of being named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France - the only female mangaka to receive the honor - it just sparked inspiration.
First up was finding a doll to use as a candidate. I'd considered using the Happy Family Grandma doll because she already has the aged look, and her hair was a pretty similar style already (though it would need to be colored, if not rerooted), but she didn't have the Asian eyes:
Tumblr media
I have several Asian dolls, but they all just looked like regular Barbies. Fine, but not quite what I was going for.
Then the live action Little Mermaid movie dropped, and the only good thing to come out of that was this doll - she was my candidate.
Tumblr media
I'd been saving those glasses (they came with a fashion pack, I think a Jurassic World one), and upon putting them on the doll's face, I thought they were perfect. Plus this doll looked more like an actual person than a regular Barbie doll. And she already had the black hair! Yes!
Next up was choosing a body. I knew a curvy body would be fitting for Rumiko, and the Inspiring Women dolls have either Made to Move bodies (but that's mostly for the athletes) or bodies with articulation at the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, and knee. I opted for the latter. I had some Barbie Extra dolls saved, so I started comparing skin tones. These two were the closest:
Tumblr media
I picked one, and once the head was on the body, it looked way off in person... so then I put it on the other body and that looked much better. It looks off on camera, but thanks to Photoshop magic, no one will know that LOL. It's a much better match in person.
Next was the outfit. I knew if I couldn't get an outfit made, this entire ordeal would be for nothing. And you wouldn't believe how difficult it was finding a full body shot of Rumiko! All her interviews and profile stories and what not, they only seem to show her from the waist up. But I did manage to find this one:
Tumblr media
That was the ribbon cutting ceremony during the 30th anniversary of Rumic World, back in 2008. Not a recent photo, but something. But I was hoping to get an outfit based on this one because it's what she wore when receiving her most recent honor (the aforementioned knighthood):
Tumblr media
I don't know how, but somehow I managed to find that picture, which showed her legs LOL. I don't know what shoes she was wearing with that outfit, so I went with the ones in the previous one. The shoes in question came from a random curvy Fashionista - they were orange and I painted them a more neutral color to match the source photo.
Then I had another conundrum - I couldn't decide which outfit I liked better!!! Fortunately, my seamstress (Molita's World), was kind enough to make both!
The next step was the face. While I didn't use the Happy Family Grandma to create this doll, I did use her as a guide. I needed to make the doll look older, and Grandma has painted age lines on her face. So I kind of went off those - after finding a hopefully good color that looks natural and not like random makeup - to create the face. I also used acetone and a toothpick to remove the heavy pink eyeshadow to give her a more natural look.
Next up was the hair. Since the doll already had the right hair color, all I had to do was cut and style it appropriately. I think I managed to pull it off quite well, if I do say so myself:
Tumblr media
(The plastic wrap around the face is meant to keep the hair shape)
The outfits didn't take long to complete and arrive, so I got her dressed and started on the props. All the Inspiring Women dolls come with a prop, and I knew what I wanted this doll to have - her special Colors book that was set to release in December 2023 commemorating her 45 years as a mangaka. But something happened and that particular book was postponed, then renamed Colors 1978-2024 (rather than Colors 1978-2023) and released this past March. So I had to wait for that to release, and then I had to wait to find good pictures of the front, back, and spine so I could put it together, scale it down, print it out, and make a book out of it LOL.
While I was waiting on that, I thought it would be a cool idea to have some of her sketches with her. Plus I had an extra first volume Inuyasha manga from when I made the series for ani-ME, so I threw that in there too. There was another book released for Rumic World's 35th anniversary, so I thought it would be a cool idea to make it like a folder that her real sketches could go inside. So I managed to find some decent photos of the front, back, and spine of that book, then I created a pocket for it, then I found a bunch of Rumiko's sketches from various series, sized them to fit inside the book, then printed them out. So the sketches she comes with are real ones she's drawn, and they fit right inside one of her books!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wasn't going to make a box for her, since I don't keep my dolls in boxes, but I had a spare one and thought I could use it as a template to create one. So I gathered photos of actual Inspiring Women boxes (I could have used the latest one, Kristi Yamaguchi, because that's probably the newest design and Kristi, like Rumiko, is an Inspiring Woman who's still alive whereas the others have passed, but I like the original style better), created a template, and made my own box. Fun fact - the box was made but not printed. So the doll's pose and everything in the box is all digitally edited LOL.
Tumblr media
I created it all from scratch - I looked up fonts, found Barbie logos, made all the name boxes, etc. I'm pretty pleased with how it looks considering it's not a real box lol. I did the same thing for the back, and I even made a design for each side of the box:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with that, the doll was done! I think the most time-consuming part of this one was the props. I printed a TON of those little sketches because I wasn't sure how many would fit in the book, and then I had to remind myself to use more than just Inuyasha because she did create several other series LOL. But overall, I'm pleased with her and she's now displayed in my cabinet! Thanks for reading!

So, I tried to decide what my reaction would be to finding out The Endless existed, and settled on:
"Oh great, these guys." 🤦‍♀️
And then in quick succession,
"Wait, these guys run the universe!"😨😱😭 *sinks to floor in total existential crisis*
As for what my Barbie self-portrait/OC/Barbiesona looks like when not having her worldview shattered:

@serenityspiral @roguelov @duckland @honeybeezgobzzzzz @orionsangel86 @academicblorbo @notallsandmen @ambercoloredfox @lizajane2 tagging my Sandman mutuals!
And for anyone who's interested in the "how's it made" of doll customization: she's a rerooted and partially repainted Fashionista #60 on a Made to Move Tennis Player body. I hand-sewed her entire outfit aside from the boots and watch (obviously, although I did repaint them). I got the doll glasses from Amazon.
(Also: fitting that I release this on the Barbie movie premiere day)

I was trying to figure out who this was for
Tried this Barbie Signature pack outfit on a regular fashionista - nothing would close. Tried in on the Barbie Looks regular doll - the jacket wouldn't close, but the skirt fit fine.
Tumblr media
It fits Defa Lucy/Tiffany, aka Mexican Walmart Barbie knock-off.
Other things I realized:
Defa Lucy's and Signature Looks Barbie's clothes are better quality, but they use Velcro.
Barbie Signature fashion pack outfit has snaps at the back of the skirt and the front of the jacket.
Velcro and microbraids do NOT mix. At all.
I was going to order more fashion packs from Barbie Signature, but after dealing with this one, I'm going to pass and try my hand at sewing instead.
Those Defa Lucy jeans are really nice. The pockets are real - a doll hand would fit in them. The fabric has a little stretch to it, too. Wish I knew where you could get fabric like that. I would love another pair (or five).

In the United States, May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, commonly abbreviated to AAPI Month.
I know that in the past I have done a brief history of Asian representation in the Barbie line but I can't find the post in my history anymore and to be honest, it probably wasn't a very good or detailed wrap-up as I did it quite early in the blog's history - in fact, the reason I'm so sure I did a post like that even though I can't find it now is because I remember getting some feedback that the post left out a lot of stuff that I really should have talked about.
This year as a celebration of AAPI Month, Mattel have released a new doll in the Inspiring Women line: Kristi Yamaguchi.
Tumblr media
Celebrating Yamaguchi as the first Asian-American woman to win Olympic gold in figure-skating, this doll is depicted wearing a replica of Yamaguchi's Olympic skating outfit. Notably she is not depicted with her gold medal.
But more than being a figure skater, Yamaguchi is also a children's book author. Did you know that? Because I didn't.
Tumblr media
Mattel have not always been at the forefront of diversity especially when it comes to representations of AAPI women. There have been some improvements - Mattel have gone from the only Asian doll in the line being an unfortunately named Dolls of the World doll, to including some Asian-American or Pacific Islander friends of Barbie such as Kira and Miko, to having Barbies depicted as AAPI in the regular Fashionistas and careers line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, there have still been problems, such as the Tokyo Olympics Barbie series that contained no Barbies of Asian appearance.
And the last AAPI doll that I am aware of that was released in the Inspiring Women line was Anna May Wong - for AAPI month last year.
Tumblr media
I do wonder if Mattel could be showing more dedication towards diversity by showcasing Inspiring Women of AAPI backgrounds at times of the year other than the leadup to May, as well as emphasizing more inclusion in the doll line year round.

trying not to give in to despair about politics too much, lemme show you some doll stuff ive been doing
its not much, but ive been trying to tackle small projects i wanna do with my dolls the last few days, like rebodies and redressing ↷↷↷
my tan odile got her body in, as well as the outfit i got for her- i wish i had something with more yellow in it, maybe something a little brighter, but this is the Vibe i was going for for now (not the silver rings tho, the doll i got to rebody her had like three rings so she has three big holes in her hands, i'll switch em out eventually but this is what i have for now)
i also rebodied a naturalista ive had for a little while. i really like the proportions they have but the super minimal articulation made it hard to play around with her. i might try to do something with her hair at some point since they got a little wonky from the box (i already have an idea) but i struggle with restyling doll hair and i dont wanna mess her curls up so im putting it off. the clothes are from the doll i got to rebody my tan odile and im moooostly happy with it? but its subject to change. side note, it was Hell getting her head off her old body and on the m2m one, the neck hole for fashionistas is much smaller than a barbies despite having a similar neck peg size
ive heard that bratz dolls can fit lol omg (and possible tween) doll clothes so im probably gonna do something about that as well, plus gonna try and see if they'll fit my star darlings cassie since i dont have her official shoes anyway, might as well dress her up in something else. might try that later tonight and if it looks alright i'll post about it!
id say dont mind the shitty phone pics using flash in a dark room because we dont have overhead lights in there and its 10:30 at night but honestly theyre kind of a vibe
one day i'll make a little lightbox or display or something for better pics but today is not that day
