Barkley L. Hendricks “Space is the Place” opens tomorrow, January 9, 2025, and will be on view through February 22, 2025, at @jackshainman!
📍513 West 20th Street #NYC
Image and caption reposted from @jackshainman Coming up in January 2025, “Space is the Place,” an exhibition highlighting the profound and visionary works of renowned artist Barkley L. Hendricks, curated by Elisabeth Sann, will open at our Chelsea gallery. A playlist made in collaboration with Soul Jazz Records will accompany the exhibition.
“Space is the Place” offers an exploration into the relationship between celestial bodies and the human experience. This connection sets the stage for an immersive experience that merges visual art, music, and philosophical exploration of the cosmos, and the future.
At the heart of this exhibition is the title itself, “Space is the Place,” which references the groundbreaking 1972 film by jazz composer and Afrofuturist icon, Sun Ra.
The cultural and artistic movement of Afrofuturism blends together science fiction, African traditions, contemporary Black experiences, and futuristic visions to reimagine the future for Black people.

In December 2020, Sotheby’s sold a painting by Barkley L. Hendricks for 4 million dollars. Hendricks never became a household name when he has alive despite his immense contributions to contemporary painting. Kehinde Wiley, Mickalene Thomas, Amy Sherald are a few contemporary artists directly influenced by him. Barkley L. Hendricks went to Europe on an educational trip and fell in love with the Rembrandts, the Van Dycks, and the Velazquez. He found his own race was absent from Western art, leaving a void that troubled him. Upon his return, he set about to change what he saw in Europe by correcting the unbalance, making his friends, relatives, and strangers the subjects of his life-size portraits, but using the chiaroscuro, genre-style compositions, and byzantine iconography he saw in Europe. In a classical copyist style, we will use closeups of Barkey Hendricks portraits as image sources for our portrait paintings, so we can study his bone structures and the rich skin tones on our translations.

A selection of images and nice review of 'Common Practice: Basketball & Contemporary Art' is up now @artnet @caroliinegoldstein writes, "The late artist Barkley L. Hendricks was best known as a painter, often capturing the swagger and gravitas of everyday Black people. He set full-length portraits of figures against monochromatic backgrounds so that both the person’s expression and their clothing and accessories were on full display. The paintings are as much a documentation of changing sartorial trends as they are snapshots of people. An immensely popular traveling exhibition 'Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool' helped cement the artist’s legacy within the art-historical canon, but most only know him as a painter. In a new book published by @skiraeditore and @jackshainman which represents the artist’s estate, Hendricks is revealed as a prolific and impressive photographer, too…" Read the full review and see more images via linkinbio. #barkleylhendricks #barkleylhendricksphotographt #barkleyhendricksphotography #barkleyhendricks https://www.instagram.com/p/CQbFQWJjVTy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Barkley L. Hendricks (April 16, 1945 – April 18, 2017) was a contemporary American painter who made pioneering contributions to black portraiture and conceptualism. While he worked in a variety of media and genres throughout his career (from photography to landscape painting), Hendricks' best known work took the form of life-sized painted oil portraits. In these portraits, he attempted to imbue a proud, dignified presence upon his subjects. He frequently painted black Americans against monochrome interpretations of urban northeastern American backdrops. Hendricks' work is unique for its marriage of American realism and post-modernism. Although Hendricks did not pose his subjects as celebrities, victims, or protesters, the subjects depicted in his works were often the voices of the under-represented blacks of the 1960s and 1970s. Hendricks even stood alongside his subjects and featured himself in works, like in Brilliantly Endowed (Self portrait), 1977 where he painted himself nude in response to an art critic's comments on his show. "This 2023 presentation celebrates the remarkable figurative work of Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) through a focused selection of portraiture drawn from private and public collections. This pioneering American artist, who counted the Frick among his favorite museums, continues to inspire artists and designers today...
Barkley L. Hendricks revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects that emphasize the dignity and individuality of his sitters. Beginning in the late 1960s, his work drew from and challenged traditions of European art, and The Frick Collection—with its iconic portraits by Rembrandt, Bronzino, Van Dyck, and others—was one of his favorite museums.
Through a selection of some of Hendricks’s finest portraits displayed in the context of the Frick’s holdings, this exhibition celebrates and explores the remarkable work of this pioneering American painter with an unprecedented display of paintings drawn from private and public collections. Organized by #AimeeNg, Curator at the Frick, and Consulting Curator #AntwaunSargent, Barkley L. Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick considers the complex place of European painting in Hendricks’s art and the evolving role of the Frick in modern American culture."
