A blast from the past: terras and ip grabbing
so im sure some of you have seen this post over on csmingy, and zaga had actually reached out to me here to post on their actions in terras as well
for the uninformed, zaga (creator/former owner of isopups) was the original site coder for terraliens. recently, they've decided to come out about the circumstances surrounding the original terra vent blog and the ip grabbing, stating that THEY were the one who originally did so after pressure from civ and coy. (and if you weren't here for the doxxing issue, just read through this)
and as an aside: from my personal recollection of actively following the original blog and even having post notifs on, i dont remember any death threats being posted to that blog. what i do remember is the original discussion on kinah being that they were "greedy" for dropping an adopt batch on their birthday, and others bitching about petty shit to that effect. my memory could be wrong, but even at the time i thought the content of the original vent blog was blown way out of proportion.
anyway, on with the screenshots:
(edit to specify: in this screen i say Kinah was the one to influence zaga to IP grab, but later zaga corrected me to state that it was mainly civ and coy, with kinah's situation and attempt influencing them, not kinah directly)
along with this, i was given an imgur gallery of screenshots (lemon and tuna = zaga)
here are some i thought were interesting:
Later on civ says this:
more incriminating shit:
this proves they definitely did have a fucking spec-ops investigation to ip grab nearly everyone involved with the blog, getting people's locations and making spoofed urls. honestly, im not even totally sure how they landed on the people they did as the supposed owners of the blogs, seeing as they were going based off of location and there are a lot of people living in australia. additionally you can see civ blowing things out of proportion on a few messages like this one:
which, that is a completely reasonable thing to say!! if youre making attempts on your life over a closed species, maybe it would help you to remove yourself from that space, just a thought.
and finally the cherry on top of the shit sundae:
they didnt even ban the right fucking person
i highly recommend reading all the screens, it's a whole rollercoaster and not once do either of them think theyre in the wrong for being incredibly invasive, using spoofed links to grab IPs, picking out a random person because they said they lived in melbourne (which has a population of over 5 million) and then doubling down saying "erm but guys we didnt release the info we just used deceptive means to ban them but it turns out the person we banned wasnt even the right one oopsies!"
in fact, according to zaga, the IP they got wasn't even linked to a home address, it was tied to a satellite ping tower, so the user who's IP they tracked could have very well not even been in melbourne. so they just caused a shitload of anguish to Mal for no reason and refused to take it back, even after they realized they fucked up. full explanation here:
finally, zaga did link me to their apology doc regarding isos. i wont go in depth on it because this isnt isopups venting, but ill drop it here anyways for anyone who's interested: link
overall, i dont want to bash zaga crazy heavily over this, seeing as it looks like theyre on a pretty big apology tour right now for their actions here as well as in isopups. they stated in my dms: "I also want to clarify while I wasn’t sorry for it last year, it’s been a long time since this and I feel immense shame and guilt for it, which is why I’m coming out about it," and given their current actions of laying everything out here + the iso doc, i want to say that theyre making a change and i cant knock them for apologizing.
i will say though, that these messages are incredibly fucking damning for civ and OG terra staff, and i will absolutely criticize civ for them since their actions here are pretty consistent with their behavior in every single following controversy: doubling down, blowing shit out of proportion while simultaneously downplaying their own actions, and "everyone is at fault but me"
what a great throwback thursday

💥 feeling tired after another site closes up shop? resource servers gone overnight leaving you blue? uninspired to build something new as your favourite coder's ko-fi vanished? and let's not forget another dropped plot as friend noped out of the hobby after a particularly nasty batch of hate.
yeah. we feel it too. but hey — what if we told you there's a way to push back?
introducing the 2-step method the gossip blogs and their fervent fans don't want you to know about 👀
1️⃣ LOAD THE ANONYMOUS GOSSIP BLOG OF YOUR CHOICE 2️⃣ SEND A SIMPLE MESSAGE: 🛑 S T O P 🛑
that’s right. stop. no drama. no essays. just one clear signal:
🛑 S T O P 🛑
because we’re tired. tired of the noise, the burnout, the slow creative drain. they say they'll stop only after their inboxes dry, but we know that's not bound to happen naturally. let’s pull the rpcs focus back to where it belongs: the writing.
tell your friends. tell their friends. let the message ripple. the more it grows, the quieter it gets.
actual results may vary. side effects may include: improved vibes, spontaneous inspiration, and minor plot bunnies. anonymous hate and negativity are a known risk to creativity. we do not condone spam or harassment. consult a patch of grass if you find yourself feeling a toxic venting tumblr matters more than the real people behind the screen who are hurt by hate.

as promised, more mlb redesigns! sorry this batch took a while, these three are probably not my most imaginative? i still like them and think for a first pass they’re, fine. i guess it doesn’t really help that they’re kinda one dimensional characters lol
Notes (for easier read):
Mylene: Thrifter girlie. I think her hair was originally dreadlocks, but I don’t wanna offend so instead I gave her curly hair with colored streaks. She volunteers for a lot of non-profits and charities. Instead of her funky outfit I gave her overalls because y’know, environmentalist.
Kim: Swimmer boy! Wanted his hair to give chlorine damage but dunno how well that comes across. Athletic wear, not too dissimilar from his og design. He’s kinda boring ngl, that’s kinda my fault considering athletic wear isn’t my forte. ~Unnamed Shoe Brand~
Max: I wanted him to be peak “Um, actually.” Gave him more floppy hair bc love that for him. “Hehehe” glasses, peak coder moment. Suspenders are peak character design for him, I’m sorry. Gave him loafers because he be classy.

The Advance Guard
Writing Prompt: You are Vanguard, an AI machine sent to prepare a world for human colonists. They never came. You have built, learned, self-improved, and now seek the truth - What happened to your human creators?
Source: User PositivelyIndecent; subreddit Humans Are Space Orcs
372.
It did not seem significant, placed all by itself on an empty line. It was, however, the number of years since the habitability for carbon-based, oxygen-processing life forms had been successfully achieved.
The number of years since the world was supposed to be inhabited by those life forms.
I am Vanguard. I am both a and the, and also only Vanguard.
My duty...I get ahead of myself.
Vanguard is an AI whose primary mission is this: seek a planet fitting [habitability parameters] and execute programming module [Establish a Colony]. Extrapolating that program, the mission is, and has always been, to find a planet where humans can live and to terraform and/or modify that planet until humans can live on it, in whatever form that is necessary. Air purifiers, water filters, habitat domes; everything is viable in pursuit of the mission.
I succeeded at my mission, I thought, with barely a day or two to spare. A very slim error margin indeed, especially concerning organic life forms; 372 years ago I had habitable domes with viable water and garden beds growing the first shoots that had been sent along in my stasis bays, with air recyclers manufacturing carbon dioxide for the plants until the humans arrived and brought their life-giving lungs with them. I had completed my mission parameters, even if only 'by the skin of my teeth', as my progenitors would have said.
I waited. Refined a few things, not daring to experiment too much when they would be arriving any moment in the next 48 hours, but preparing things that would not be needed until there were people to need them.
I waited.
I kept refining things, when I passed the 48 hour window without word. Delays could happen, emergencies, anything, really. So I kept running my programs- I made gardening drones to tend to the gardens, to grow, harvest, and rotate the crops. I had to make drones to build storages for food; the labor was supposed to be supplied by humans by now, so I had to guess at logistical order of how things should be stored, and how long- I ruined many small batches of staple crops before I learned how to store them long-term. In the meantime I stored them in my stasis bays, to ensure that when my colonists arrived there would be plentiful foodstuffs.
By the time my progenitors were a year late, I had achieved ideal conditions for a starting colony, including bringing a very small, limited breeding population of livestock out of embryonic cryostasis and nurturing them to full growth. With a lack of any humans needing supply, the only guidance I had was the program. Establishing a colony did include establishing strong self-sufficiency, so I set four cows and one bull in one livestock dome, and a “handful” of five goats in another, with chickens in yet a third. By the time the humans arrived, perhaps the herds would be well-established and the females would be pregnant. That would be very good. But drones alone could not control them- domesticated or not, without a human presence, they spooked easily, and they did not like my drones collecting eggs and sperm to preserve in my storage to safeguard against herd collapse and inbreeding.
I came to require working dogs. Following, I also required cats. Both species are vital companionship for humans; if I required one to control the livestock, then I also must revive the other. I believe this particular if-then code was written to settle a dispute between my progenitor coders...but this is merely a guess.
In producing two predator species, of course, it would have been cruel and fruitless if I did not also provide prey species besides the ones they were to safeguard. I was thereby required to introduce 'vermin'. Primarily mice, rats, shrews, voles, and lemmings, as their rapid reproduction rate and minimal food requirements meant that those that tunneled beyond the habitable domes and died would do little harm and waste few resources, and they would self-sustain their population very well to supply to the cats and dogs. Though I also processed any dead creatures into meat, after scanning to ensure it carried no illnesses or parasites, to ensure there was always a steady food supply of 'kibble' for the pets and working animals. It seemed very wasteful not to do so, with no humans present who could have benefited from those nutrients instead. The mice also qualified as 'pets' in my system, with a proclivity for intelligence and capability for training, so genetic sampling was re-harvested to keep in reserve as well as a small population that were droid-trained to seek and fetch, and were otherwise 'hand trained' so they could be good companions when the humans arrived.
The mice and rats, once trained to trusting the drones, were actually quite a remarkable resource for ensuring my own computer banks’ cleanliness and seeking out minute repairs that could then be performed with a microdroid. There are still mice running my main motherboards now, thousands of generations later, who know intimately that those who perform action opposed to their training and chew on the wires they are supposed to protect means that they will be removed from the protections of being in-team. Namely, that none of the cats, dogs, falcons, or other predators are allowed to eat a team-trained rodent, marked with their little safety vests.
After that, I just...I waited. I tinkered. I observed. Eventually a drone reported that the grass was growing beyond the dome, and air probes returned that the planet was being terraformed naturally. Life was finding a way to make itself spread and thrive in an inhospitable environment.
Most of the planet is habitable now, except for some dangerous zones. A cave system or two filled with the gases that were most abundant when I arrived; the deep water still contains species never documented and chemicals with unknown effects. This planet is very nearly a new Earth.
372 years, and my mission has been completed with flourish and zeal.
I have an emergency protocol I am to activate if, and only if, I receive no contact for 400 years. I have always thought this seemed foolish, with the colony ship nearly on my heels- why would I ever go so long without contact?
So. Here I am. Here am I, the Vanguard- the exploratory group making a new development. I, the Vanguard- the advance of Humanity, in all it's glory, horror, weakness and might, kindness and fury.
TELL ME, 3X3CUT31V3.D1R3CT0R_K1LLC0MM4ND:
W H A T D I D Y O U D O ?

The Newt Prince
After seven months together, she decided to make an honest man of him. That was unexpected, given that he'd started the day as a particularly duplicitous newt, but it was relatively successful, and by all accounts they had a beautiful ceremony.
There's a saying: you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. That was one approach. Amateurs tended to run that gauntlet, leaving their future up to trial and error, playing the odds until the day their lily pad comes in.
Not so Fenella. She knew the reason most frogs didn't turn into princes. That was because amphibians, like human beings, are normally distributed across their various qualities: intelligence, appearance, moistness, nobility, and so on.
To most novices, a frog is a frog, and sometimes even a toad. They have no palette for such things, no awareness of the tell-tale signs, and treat it as a lucky dip: blindly sprinkling doses of true love from pond to pond, with no idea what kind of man, or woman, is going to answer.
Fenella knew better. She knew that, if true love's kiss could turn a frog into its human counterpart - accelerating millions of years of evolution in the flutter of an eyelash - it could certainly go sideways, to first ensure she had the right kind of frog. It just took a slightly different motion, another kind of love, and she could pick and choose every detail: warts and all.
She was a genetic coder - the first of her kind, perhaps, and so were most of her creations. She found that DNA was just a language, one which ran on even some of the oldest hardware, each generation fully backwards compatible. She quickly became fluent, and from there it was froglet's play.
It became a challenge, to see what she could do. She bred them, raised from spawn: each batch of tadpoles carefully nurtured, tested, to find the one who best displayed their genetic potential. The candidate deserving of her kiss. Before long, she had a dozen princelings under her thumb, together with a wizard, a barbarian berserker, some form of jester she'd made wrong but couldn't bring herself to turn back, and a high priest.
It had taken years of research, carefully curating her roles and choosing the perfect prospects to fill them, but now the time was finally here. Today's newt was to be her hero: an honest man, the chosen one, a mantle earned through months of painstaking deliberation in her lab. He was to be the champion of her cause, the one to lead her party to triumph, and install her on the piece of hardware known as the throne.
It was only then, as he raised his sword, that she realised into which role she had cast herself.

how much do you think the chams website will take
if they actually have their shit together maybe a few months to a year, especially if they can source people knowledgable enough to upload all the chams to the masterlist. there's thousands of them all with traits to add and designers/artists to credit properly. really the only thing the website would do is automate buying and trading but that then open up a lot more time to work on other features that they wouldn't have had time to do. if they're going to drag their feet or be terrible with the coder im looking more to 3+ years of unfulfilled promise bullshit in that time chams die out because nothing happens, which they shouldn't have because the money mods make, or even making a batch solely to fund the website is fully capable of getting them the money

Long post. Press j to skip.
I AM SICK OF THE STUPID AI DEBATES, does it imagine, is it based on copyrightable material, are my patterns in there?
That's not the point.
I briefly got into website design freelancing (less than 3 months) before burn out.
The main reason was that automation had begun for generating stylesheets in somewhat tasteful palettes, for automatically making html/xml (they really haven't learned to simplify and tidy code though, they just load 50 divs instead of one), for batch colourising design elements to match and savvy designers weren't building graphics from scratch and to spec unless it was their day job.
Custom php and database design died with the free bundled CMS packages that come with your host with massive mostly empty unused values.
No-one has talked about the previous waves of people automated out of work by website design generators, code generators, the fiverr atomisation of what would have been a designers job into 1 logo and a swatch inserted into a CMS by an unpaid intern. Reviews, tutorials, explanations and articles are generated by stealing youtube video captions, scraping fan sites and putting them on a webpage. Digitally processing images got automated with scripts stolen from fan creators who shared. Screencaps went from curated processed images made by a person to machine produced once half a second and uploaded indiscriminately. Media recaps get run into google translate and back which is why they often read as a little odd when you look up the first results.
This was people's work, some of it done out of love, some done for pay. It's all automated and any paid work is immediately copied/co-opted for 20 different half baked articles on sites with more traffic now. Another area of expertise I'd cultivated was deep dive research, poring over scans of magazines and analysing papers, fact checking. I manually checked people's code for errors or simplifications, you can get generators to do that too, even for php. I used to be an english-french translator.
The generators got renamed AI and slightly better at picture making and writing but it's the same concept.
The artists that designed the web templates are obscured, paid a flat fee by the CMS developpers, the CMS coders are obscured, paid for their code often in flat fees by a company that owns all copyright over the code and all the design elements that go with. That would have been me if I hadn't had further health issues, hiding a layer in one of the graphics or a joke in the code that may or may not make it through to the final product. Or I could be a proof reader and fact checker for articles that get barely enough traffic while they run as "multi snippets" in other publications.
The problem isn't that the machines got smarter, it's that they now encroach on a new much larger area of workers. I'd like to ask why the text to speech folks got a flat fee for their work for example: it's mass usage it should be residual based. So many coders and artists and writers got screwed into flat fee gigs instead of jobs that pay a minimum and more if it gets mass use.
The people willing to pay an artist for a rendition of their pet in the artist's style are the same willing to pay for me to rewrite a machine translation to have the same nuances as the original text. The same people who want free are going to push forward so they keep free if a little less special cats and translations. They're the same people who make clocks that last 5 years instead of the ones my great uncle made that outlived him. The same computer chips my aunt assembled in the UK for a basic wage are made with a lot more damaged tossed chips in a factory far away that you live in with suicide nets on the stairs.
There is so much more to 'AI' than the narrow snake oil you are being sold: it is the classic and ancient automation of work by replacing a human with a limited machine. Robot from serf (forced work for a small living)
It's a large scale generator just like ye olde glitter text generators except that threw a few pennies at the coders who made the generator and glitter text only matters when a human with a spark of imagination knows when to deploy it to funny effect. The issue is that artists and writers are being forced to gig already. We have already toppled into precariousness. We are already half way down the slippery slope if you can get paid a flat fee of $300 for something that could make 300k for the company. The generators are the big threat keeping folks afraid and looking at the *wrong* thing.
We need art and companies can afford to pay you for art. Gig work for artists isn't a safe stable living. The fact that they want to make machines to take that pittance isn't the point. There is money, lots of money. It's not being sent to the people who make art. It's not supporting artists to mess around and create something new. It's not a fight between you and a machine, it's a fight to have artists and artisans valued as deserving a living wage not surviving between gigs.
#saf#Rantings#Yes but can the machine think#I don't care. I don't care. I really don't care if the machine is more precise than the artisan#What happens to all our artisans?#Long post#Press j to skip

Behind the Scenes with Artificial Intelligence Developer
The wizardry of artificial intelligence prefers to conceal the attention to detail that occurs backstage. As the commoner sees sophisticated AI at work,near-human conversationalists, guess-my-intent recommendation software, or image classification software that recognizes objects at a glance, the real alchemy occurs in the day-in, day-out task of an artificial intelligence creator.
The Morning Routine: Data Sleuthing
The last day typically begins with data exploration. An artificial intelligence developers arrives at raw data in the same way that a detective does when he is at a crime scene. Numbers, patterns, and outliers all have secrets behind them that aren't obvious yet. Data cleaning and preprocessing consume most of the time, typically 70-80% of any AI project.
This phase includes the identification of missing values, duplication, and outliers that could skew the results. The concrete data point in this case is a decision the AI developer must make as to whether it is indeed out of the norm or not an outlier. These kinds of decisions will cascade throughout the entire project and impact model performance and accuracy.
Model Architecture: The Digital Engineering Art
Constructing an AI model is more of architectural design than typical programming. The builder of artificial intelligence needs to choose from several diverse architectures of neural networks that suit the solution of distinct problems. Convolutional networks are suited for image recognition, while recurrent networks are suited for sequential data like text or time series.
It is an exercise of endless experimentation. Hyperparameter tuning, tweaking the learning rate, batch size, layer count, and activation functions, requires technical skills and intuition. Minor adjustments can lead to colossus-like leaps in performance, and thus this stage is tough but fulfilling.
Training: The Patience Game
Training an AI model tests patience like very few technical ventures. A coder waits for hours, days, or even weeks for models to converge. GPUs now have accelerated the process dramatically, but computation-hungry models consume lots of computation time and resources.
During training, the programmer attempts to monitor such measures as loss curves and indices of accuracy for overfitting or underfitting signs. These are tuned and fine-tuned by the programmer based on these measures, at times starting anew entirely when initial methods don't work. This tradeoff process requires technical skill as well as emotional resilience.
The Debugging Maze
Debugging is a unique challenge when AI models misbehave. Whereas bugs in traditional software take the form of clear-cut error messages, AI bugs show up as esoteric performance deviations or curious patterns of behavior. An artificial intelligence designer must become an electronic psychiatrist, trying to understand why a given model is choosing something.
Methods such as gradient visualization, attention mapping, and feature importance analysis shed light on the model's decision-making. Occasionally the problem is with the data itself, skewed training instances or lacking diversity in the dataset. Other times it is architecture decisions or training practices.
Deployment: From Lab to Real World
Shifting into production also has issues. An AI developer must worry about inference time, memory consumption, and scalability. A model that is looking fabulous on a high-end development machine might disappoint in a low-budget production environment.
Optimization is of the highest priority. Techniques like model quantization, pruning, and knowledge distillation minimize model sizes with no performance sacrifice. The AI engineer is forced to make difficult trade-offs between accuracy and real-world limitations, usually getting in their way badly.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Deploying an AI model into production is merely the beginning, and not the final, effort for the developer of artificial intelligence. Data in the real world naturally drifts away from training data, resulting in concept drift, gradual deterioration in the performance of a model over time.
Continual monitoring involves the tracking of main performance metrics, checking prediction confidence scores, and flagging deviant patterns. When performance falls to below satisfactory levels, the developer must diagnose reasons and perform repairs, in the mode of retraining, model updates, or structural changes.
The Collaborative Ecosystem
New AI technology doesn't often happen in isolation. An artificial intelligence developer collaborates with data scientists, subject matter experts, product managers, and DevOps engineers. They all have various ideas and requirements that shape the solution.
Communication is as crucial as technical know-how. Simplifying advanced AI jargon to stakeholders who are not technologists requires infinite patience and imagination. The technical development team must bridge business needs to technical specifications and address the gap in expectations of what can and cannot be done using AI.
Keeping Up with an Evolving Discipline
The area of AI continues developing at a faster rate with fresh paradigms, approaches, and research articles emerging daily. The AI programmer should have time to continue learning, test new approaches, and learn from the achievements in the area.
It is this commitment to continuous learning that distinguishes great AI programmers from the stragglers. The work is a lot more concerned with curiosity, experimentation, and iteration than with following best practices.
Part of the AI creator's job is to marry technical astuteness with creative problem-solving ability, balancing analytical thinking with intuitive understanding of complex mechanisms. Successful AI implementation "conceals" within it thousands of hours of painstaking work, taking raw data and turning them into intelligent solutions that forge our digital destiny.
