Beautopia Review

Susan Strong returns, and the show recognizes how significant her reintroduction is to Finn and the audience by staging her appearance at the Treehouse as grand and important. Jake is distrusting of Susan, bringing up the events of her first episode, while Finn still holds on to the hope that Susan is human. Susan herself has developed, now speaking slightly more fluent English. We can already infer that the Hyoomans are mutated descendants of humans who sought shelter during the Mushroom War. We learn in this episode that those humans didn’t just live in a dirty sewer. They built an underground civilization called Beautopia. Beautopia, just like the humans led by Two Bread Tom and Hugo, shows its in humans’ nature to rebuild. Beautopia is even an island civilization of sorts. Unlike the islands and The Drift, Beautopia’s society was abandoned presumably hundreds of years ago. Susan has attempted freeing Beautopia from the Lub Glubs before, but meeting Finn has reignited her hope of restarting the civilization.

Jake’s prejudice towards the Hyoomans is on full display. He scares them with his shapeshifting for his amusement, building on his desire to rule them like “angry gods” in “Susan Strong”. Susan almost drowning Finn works great as a reminder that Finn and Susan are not exactly the same. The episode really plays up the awkwardness between their relationship. Finn and Susan do feel a connection to each other and they want to be in each other's lives, but their lack of understanding of what the other person is keeps getting in the way. This scene and Susan’s surprise of Finn’s lack of gills is a wake up call for Finn at how different they are. Finn must be disappointed and starts to believe that she probably is a fish person. However, he still feels a connection to her. That and his heroic nature makes him determined to still help and trust Susan and defend her from Jake’s insults. In actuality, Susan’s surprise is that he is like her. Finn takes his hat off here and his hair has continued to grow back since “Mortal Folly”. 

Finn, Jake, and Susan take a boat to Beautopia, a precursor to the Islands crew (minus BMO). We get a string of great Jake moments including a very catchy sea shanty. Jake’s smug reaction to Susan’s terror over a pool floaty is hilarious, and him struggling to breathe while being used as a paddle is even funnier. Another pool floaty coming out after an ominous buildup with horror movie music is also very funny. The true forms of the Lub Glubs have a very creepy design. The implication that they have existed for hundreds of years leads me to believe they were mutated from nuclear residue, eventually pushing out the humans. One of them chews on a human skull with a bunny hat, leading to many wild fan theories connecting it to Fionna. 

Jake and Susan complete their arcs in this episode with Jake finally trusting in Susan and Finn once again inspiring Susan to overcome her fears. Finn tells Susan that humans and hyoomans have to stick together, staying consistent with Finn’s lesson in “Susan Strong” that everyone is the same or “wild animals”. Jake delaying throwing in the lantern is yet another hilarious moment. One of the Lub Glubs reminds Jake of his mother, like how a drawing of one reminded him of his father. Many interpret this as a subconscious memory of Warren Ampersand. It could be, but I don’t think the resemblance is quite strong enough. 

The episode ends on a fantastic, quiet moment. Finn and Susan have yet another awkward moment, with Finn refusing to stay. Susan puts Finn’s hand under her hat, resulting in the two finally understanding each other. The episode does not confirm if Finn’s reaction was to him feeling gills or not. However, I think it can only be read as Finn realizing Susan is human, even without the context of later episodes. Susan puts Finn’s hand there as a response to Finn telling her he isn’t like her. Finn’s surprise only works if she is human because Finn was already convinced Susan was a hyooman. I like the reveal being more subtle and the show’s restraint at only giving us a tiny piece of the puzzle.

The dynamic of Finn, Jake, and Susan makes for a great episode with lots of nuanced interaction full of heart, tension, and hilarity. It makes for a worthy followup to one of season two’s best episodes.

Made some adventure time ocs recently, Coelacanth Princess who lives in the Mariana Trench and is like several hundred million years old (avoided all those mass extinctions the mushroom war and the comet impacts by Being In The Deep Sea) and Flotsam the Hyooman, a young hyooman swept away from Beautopia by a flood and was dragged down to the deep sea by the ocean currents, ending up being taken in by Coelacanth Princess. Since Flotsam isn’t surrounded by hyooman societal pressures they let their fins poke through their hat, and living primarily in the ocean made them get a little tail.

Script For My New Video About Minerva Campbell In Adventure Time:

Minerva Campbell is the mother of finn the human in adventure time, in this video i’ll be discussing her backstory or atleast what we saw of it during the islands miniseries, all the things that she had to go through, how it affected her, and how she got to where is now in the future

In the first episode of islands we find out that there’s an island with possible humans on it that both susan strong and finn feel a need to go to for different reasons, susan for having memories of once being there and finn to learn more about human culture and where he came from

As before this point in the series we had very limited knowledge on the existence of humans as a whole, and were given heavy implication that finn was the last of his kind and the others were now extinct

But eventually susan started to gain her memory and speech back and with this came the reveal that finn’s mother was still alive, as susan whose name is actually cara told finn that she was actually a helper “which is what they call doctors” on the said island that there currently heading too

She would help old people by giving them rides to places they needed to go and spend most of her time being a nurse in a hospital on the island but

One day she met martin mertens, who was a conman trying to play both sides of the two roles placed on the island, which were hiders and seekers, hiders being people who tried to escape the island and seekers being the who’s who capture them as leaving the island has become basically illegal due to the fact that the outside world beyond the island is claimed to be dangerous

martin would tell hiders he would give them a boat to escape on in return for some gadgets but as soon as they left he would call the authorities

but eventually one of the hiders forced martin to go with them, thus resulting in him being caught by susan who would break his legs

He would then be wheelchaired to the hospital where he would meet none other then minerva campbell who would look after and treat him for the next couple days

but during this time period, martin would flirt with minerva and furthermore ask her on a date, which they would go on when martins legs were healed

and then eventually they would move into a house together and end up having a child named finn

One day, minerva left finn with martin as she had to work but later on the woman that got caught trying to escape the island because of martin came to get revenge, martin made a run for it and got on a raft to sit in the sea for the time being

But the guardian of the island assumed they were trying to escape and starting attacking, martin would then climb up the guardians arm and land on its face, then he used his laser gadget to make its eye explode, but the explosion sent martin flying and would separate him from finn

Who would then drift away on the raft, surviving off of a magic bread stick until eventually coming ashore to the land of ooo

MINERVA'S PERSPECTIVE:

But now looking at minerva's perspective , she comes home to see the home she had built and started a life in with the person that she loves completely destroyed

she thought she would come home after work with everything as normal, but her expectations were completely shattered as both martin and finn were gone

Leaving her in a state of panic, not knowing what has happened to either of them

As the other hiders are arrested they say they cant believe that out of all the hundreds of people that have tried to escape the one who finally manages to is martin

Making minerva believe that martin was a hider all along and if there relationship was just a lie

Minerva then told dr dross who would then send susan to find them but as we now know susan lost her memory at some point along the way because when we first met her in the episode beautopia she could barely speak and was scared of everything

As years went by minerva could only think that finn and martin wouldn’t ever be returning

The pain of losing a loved one, or thinking they had lied to you about everything is already something painful for anyone to go through, whether that just be them leaving and breaking up with you or in the way worse way them being dead, but i feel this outcome is the worst of them all, them leaving with your child out of nowhere and your now given the fear that both could be dead as i mentioned previously everyone has been made to think that the outside world beyond the island is very dangerous

But this caused minerva to take a step back from work and meanwhile dr gross began to do some strange and dangerous experiments, Which ended up leading to the outbreak of a virus

With a death rate of 62% for the general human population and a 100% rate for helpers who faced it daily

Minerva being the last helper left, but knowing she was nearing death decided to upload her brain into the island's web in order to put her consciousness into hundreds of helper robots, resulting in her basically being the savior of the human race.

MINERVA MEETS FINN:

then in islands part 7, as finn and the others reached the island they got to see minerva in this robot state, eventually when she checked finns dna and saw he was her son, the version of her that is still consciously living told the story of what had happened to her to finn

and afterward said it didn't matter anymore because he was back and furthermore tried to get him to stay on the island as its safe here

As finn tries to explain that he can't, she cuts him off by saying for the rest of your life and furthermore tries to get him to upload his brain to the islands web like she did

Signifying how much she doesn't want to lose him again and that having him gone for that long has made her 1. overprotective and 2. Has generally drove her a bit mad

Finn then gave a speech to the humans saying that they can’t let the fears that they have about the world beyond the island make all of their decisions for them, and that having fear and other emotions is a part of living, showing them they have free will to explore and learn new things, having these experiences is a part of being human and that staying here won’t allow them to have those

but this causes minerva to then put a shield barrier around the islands as has such a firm belief that if the humans were to leave they would be killed, due to the trauma of what happened to her, but this quickly gave her the antagonist role in the story, keeping people here against the will, which was exactly what ice king “the main antagonist” in the early seasons of the show would do

As finn confronts his mom telling her to stop, she says that she’s helping people

And so finn shows her a bunch of his memories of times he’s helped people to show her that this isn’t, making her realize that despite not living on the island, and instead living in a crazy world which is titled as this dangerous place humans could never survive in, he still grew up to be a helper

thus making her disable the shield and and furthermore show her what she was doing was wrong and that she had to accept finn and the other humans leaving

Her entire perspective had been shifted, everything she had once believed in about the land of ooo wasn't as true as she thought, and her morals on keeping the humans safe even if by force was now gone

Ending islands with a very bittersweet finale with finn and his mom saying goodbye in a virtual reality version of their old home which brought me and finn to tears

MINERVA IN COME ALONG WITH ME / FIONNA AND CAKE:

And then in the last episode of the series “come along with me” we actually got to see minerva and the humans on a ship heading to ooo

where as we saw in fionna and cake they would create a little sky island there, which was really cool to see

But despite everything minerva had gone through herself she was still being a therapist for people like simon, i think she might need a therapist herself
