Liz Lochhead

Liz was born in 1947, in Motherwell. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and taught art at schools in Glasgow and Bristol. She was Writer in Residence at Edinburgh University and Writer in Residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1988.

Her first collection of poems, Memo for Spring, was published in 1972 and won a Scottish Arts Council Book Award. Her poetry has been published in a number of collections including Penguin Modern Poets 4 A performer as well as a poet, her revue Sugar and Spite was staged in 1978 with Marcella Evaristi. Liz Lochhead travelled to Canada in the same year, after being selected for a Scottish Writers Exchange Fellowship, and she became a full-time writer, performance poet and broadcaster.

I do like this poem by Liz, most of us have no doubt experienced a bereavement and had to "pick" over the remnants of their belongings. Liz was friends with, in my opinion three Scottish literary greats in the 1970's Alasdair Gray, Jim Kelman and Tom Leonard.

A very talented writer, arguably Lochhead's most well known work is her 1987 play Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off which explores the relationship between Elizabeth I of England and Mary Stuart.

The moment she died, my mother’s dance dresses turned from the colours they really were to the colours I imagine them to be. I can feel the weight of bumptoed silver shoes swinging from their anklestraps as she swaggers up the path towards her dad, light-headed from airman’s kisses. Here, at what I’ll have to learn to call my father’s house, yes every ragbag scrap of duster prints her even more vivid than an Ilford snapshot on some seafront in a white cardigan and that exact frock. Old lipsticks. Liquid stockings. Labels like Harella, Gor-ray, Berketex. As I manhandle whole outfits into binbags for Oxfam every mote in my eye is a utility mark and this is useful: the sadness of dispossessed dresses, the decency of good coats roundshouldered in the darkness of wardrobes, the gravitas of lapels, the invisible danders of skin fizzing off from them like all that life that will not neatly end.

Had the opportunity to work​ the past 3 days at The National Wedding show in London💍... Had a really great time and worked and met amazing girls... Starting day 1 knowing nothing about Wedding Dresses, finishing day 3 with a better understanding of models, shapes and names, and even tried to help the bride-to-be finding​ her dress while the sales assistant were busy... POLIÇA, the Minneapolis-based project of singer, Channy Leaneagh, producer, Ryan Olson, bassist, Chris Bierden and drummers, Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson are today sharing their new single, ‘Rotting’ – out via Memphis Industries.

On ‘Rotting’ Channy Leaneagh fulminates out over the baleful yet lush production of Ryan Olson and Berlin-based techno producer Dustin Zahn (think Crass's 1981 ‘Berketex Bride’ - but with rage). ‘Rotting’ is the first new music from POLIÇA since the 2020 album When We Stay Alive, and is an invigorating release from a difficult two years.
