Got to thinking today, about some cartoons I watched when I was a kid, called the Saints and Heroes collection( great stuff), and how it's all, y'know, saints! St. Bernadette! St. Francis Xavier! St. Nicholas! The Fatima story! Yeay! They're great 30 min. episodes for kids to learn a bit about catholicism's greatest saints! And in the heroes sections, they got Columbus: which is fine, they mainly focus on navigation and how he worked hard to achieve that level of education, lots of catholic stuff floating around in that one. They got Ben-Hur; classic jewish/early christian story, though not real, per se. Really good stuff. Great for christian kids.
Then we got the bloody ODYSSEY?!?!? Like, Greek pagan Odysseus running around the seas, killing monsters and suitors and tricking his way across the Mediterranean, all narrated by a Grandpa Owl?!? telling the story to his grandson owlet?!?! Very princess bride style... super weird in this context. None of the other films are narrated by animals. I'm not saying that kids shouldn't know the story of Odysseus, I'm just saying you can get serious whiplash watching chill saint movies for kids and then coming across The Odyssey, with no catholic connections, ( at least that's easily grasped by a child), getting thrown in the middle of the list and once you're done, brother you feel like you been in a fever dream. It's so bizarrely disconcertingly different in style to the rest of the films, too.
But at least they keep the fact that Odysseus slept around during those years at sea completely absent from the story. So it has that in it's favour!
Still lots of fun to watch!

"You gotta be original, because if you're like someone else, what do they need you for?"
At the age of nine, Bernadette Lazzara from Queens, New York obtained her Actors Equity Card in the name "Bernadette Peters" to avoid ethnic stereotyping, with the stage name taken from her bread delivery truck driver father's first name. Steve Martin and Peters were in a personal relationship during production of "The Jerk" (1979). The part where Navin licks Marie's face during their first date was completely improvised. Peters' reaction was genuine. Martin's favorite moment of the film, as he detailed in his 2007 memoir "Born Standing Up," was the scene in which he and Peters sing "Tonight You Belong to Me." Martin felt the moment was touching, and waited in anticipation at the film's premiere screening in St. Louis. Unfortunately, much of the audience left during the scene to buy more popcorn. Peters won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for "Pennies From Heaven" (1981, below), also starring Martin. Of her performance, John DiLeo wrote that she "is not only poignant as you'd expect but has a surprising inner strength." Pauline Kael wrote in "The New Yorker": "Peters is mysteriously right in every nuance." Kael further noted that "the dance numbers are funny, amazing, and beautiful all at once; several of them are just about perfection." Martin was offered the role of Rooster in "Annie" (1982). He turned it down when he heard he would be working alongside Peters. They were breaking up at the time, and Martin felt it would be too painful to work with her for several months.

I went to see Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons!
And I really loved it! It is an amazing and hilarious story, with brilliant performances throughout!
The rom-com between Bernadette (Jenna Coleman) and Oliver (Aidan Turner) is brilliantly, and concisely told in a lot of different scenes that only last a short time each, before transitioning to a completely different scene and point in the relationship. But even though that might sound confusing, it really isn't. It's easy to follow and presents the story in a unique and interesting way, that tells a consistent narrative, and builds over time, even though it is not chronological. It is really enjoyable to watch, and the 80 or so minutes of the play pass really quickly.
Tumblr media
It's an intriguing concept (a law that allows everyone to only speak 140 words a day), especially in how it affects the two protagonists, and their interactions with each other. This is brilliantly showcased not only through the words they speak, how quickly they speak, how you can really see the care they put into choosing every single word they say, but also their physicality, how they interact with each other, and even in the backdrop.
It's hilarious, with numerous really funny scenes and dialogues that often lead to outbursts of laughter from the entire audience. And it is also quite political throughout, especially regarding Oliver's story. He plays a vital role in protests against the "Hush Law", and then continues trying to find ways to repeal it. Whereas Bernadette is at first not that interested in it, even supporting some of its ideas. But she is also shocked when she realises that it is actually going to happen, and tries to support Oliver in finding some way to repeal the law.
Tumblr media
Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner are brilliant in it! They have such a fantastic chemistry together. I really appreciate how hard it must have been to learn the lines for it, much more so than for most other plays of a similar length. The lack of linear progression of the story must have made it really hard to remember the order of the scenes. There is also often such a huge contrast between scenes, and there are scenes with seemingly random numbers and words, which must have been difficult to remember as well.
Tumblr media
They also seem to have real fun with the play. Comparing the performance I saw with the scene they played out several times for the promotion for the play, I saw that they really tried to mix things up, do things differently, try out different ways of saying their lines, and performing their parts. Presumably, the same applies to the rest of the scenes too! There are scenes in which they get very intimate and kiss. There is a scene where Jenna jumps into Aidan's arms, and he whirls her around. But there are also many scenes where they stand far apart, to physically represent the emotional distance between them, especially in the scenes after the law is passed, when they can no longer clearly express themselves.
Here are two recordings of them performing one scene in two promotional videos of them. You might notice some slight differences between the two!
Jenna once again showcased her enormous performative range. She laughed, and cried, was exhilarant, and devastated, inquisitive and relaxed, angry and vindictive, but also supportive and kind, which she displayed through her expressions and her entire body language. As the frequent scene changes were illustrated through a very brief dimming of the lights, you could see her instantaneous change of emotions as the tone of the scenes rapidly shifted. In a number of instances, I could see her tears, but just a second later, see her filled with happiness. And vice versa. I have never seen any actor perform such an impressive rapid emotional transition so brilliantly and effectively. It was really impressive to watch, and you got the feeling that you were watching a movie, with scenes filmed on different days, rather than a live performance where subsequent scenes occurred happened in less than a second. Jenna again proved what a phenomenal actress she is!
Tumblr media
Despite the fact that there are no props on stage, and it is just Jenna and Aidan in the same casual wardrobe throughout the entire play, they really brought the different environments and setting to light through their performances, and how they approached various scenes differently.
As I've said before, I am always really impressed by how Jenna develops a different way of speaking for each of her roles. And though her accent in this play is similar to her IRL accent, she speaks with a far higher pitch in this play than she usually does, quite the contrast to some of her recent roles when she spoke with a very low pitch. Jenna also sung on two occasions in the play. And even though both times she was meant to sing in a very casual way, both were beautiful to listen to, she has such a beautiful voice. Of particular note is that when they sang Total Eclipse of the Heart almost at the very end of the play, Jenna sang a really high part. And contrary to one of her most-told stories about singing karaoke with Charlotte Church, and not hitting that high, this time, Jenna definitely hit that high.
Tumblr media
Another scene that I really wanted to highlight was the scene in the last minutes before Quietude comes into effect, when Bernadette and Oliver try to use their last minutes of having endless words, to say everything they had always wanted to say to each other, and do it quickly, as time is running out. We all know that Jenna can talk REALLY quickly. But this must be some new record even for her. The number of words she can say in a single minute is astonishing. But she doesn't just speak the words out flat just to be quick about it. She does a powerful performance alongside it, and puts real emotion into every single word. It is an absolutely marvelous and awe-inspiring performance.
Tumblr media
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it, it is an absolutely amazing play. It also made me really appreciate how completely unreliable, and frankly, objectively wrong some "professional critics" are. The way some of them described the play, and the way the play actually is, could not be more different.
Or, to sum things up in two words, in the style of the play:
Lemons, lovou!

Trying to explain historical costuming in shows: "Look, you can start with these seven Bernadette Banner videos, move on to Not Your Momma's History, a dash of Abby Cox, add in these five thousand word tumblr essays- wait where are you going?? We haven't even started on the men's fashion!! You need to know how buttonholes are made to understand how this costume is from two decades earlier than they claim! Come back here!! THIS IS HOW WE HAVE FUN"
😂 The thing is that I'm NOT impossible to please! I'm really not! There are films that I can tell really tried to capture the aesthetic of a period and they get my sincerely gushing praise forever! And I'm even much more willing to let things SLIDE if they mostly really TRIED! Like, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice? Way too many low-necked dresses for day wear honestly, but they did SUCH a great job with the general aesthetic including the HAIR, that you know what? I don't care, I ADORE YOU! The 1994 Little Women? There are some weird collars and literally none of the men wear hats for some reason?! But, once again, they NAILED the general aesthetic and oh my gosh is that an actual spoon bonnet you included?!!! I am KISSING YOU ON THE MOUTH! Emma 2020? Some of the hair choices are a little weird (the ramen noodle curls, haha) and some of Mr. Knightley's trousers have a modern fly front, but NEVER MIND THAT! You are my almost PERFECT ANGEL and I will be TELLING EVERYONE how much I love you!!! 🥺🥰. 2011 Jane Eyre? I am VIBRATING WITH EXCITEMENT!!! I have a mental list of movies that I think are truly fantastic from a historical costuming perspective (it's not even necessarily always about Total Accuracy! It's about VIBES, it's about did they understand the Cultural Zeitgeist!) and they have my loyalty and adoration forever!
(Also, this is where I have to mention that I have had the wonderful privilege of meeting Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma's History in person, and not only was she super lovely, but she actually literally saved my youngest child's life. 😆 I am completely dead serious, and it's a great story so you should ask me about that sometime, haha!)

This is going to be the most niche rant I've ever written, but there's this musical I love called "Into the Woods", and there's a song in it called "Agony" which I also love very much, it's sung by two Princes who each fell in love with a woman they can't have. And there's a part in this song, right after Cinderella's Prince finishes his first little bit of lamenting - I don't know the musical terminology for it - where Rapunzel's Prince sings "Agony! Far more painful than yours!" and somehow nobody except the 1989 stage film, the one with Bernadette Peters in it, I love her by the way, gets the line right. I'm a bit obsessed with "Agony" and I've listened to a million-bajillion versions, but somehow most of them don't seem to acknowledge the line is written as comedic, or, when they do acknowledge it, they completely fuck up the delivery. Also I think they pitched it down in the movie? Which was very bad. Okay, bye.

i don't remember how old i was when i first saw Priscilla queen of the desert, but i am very confident that i was too young. i remember vividly having the understanding (although not the vocabulary) that Bernadette was a trans woman whereas Tick and Adam were men who performed in women's clothing. there is a scene where she and Tick are having a heated conversation and she is taking hormone tablets. she starts to cry in that scene not long after taking a tablet and i have a vivid memory of thinking that hormones were an extremely fast-acting chemical and it was the influx of femininity that made her burst into tears at that moment. (even though i definitely knew that men could and did cry - there's scenes elsewhere in the movie where Tick cries, for example). i also vividly recall my understanding of a scene where Adam takes some unspecified pills (in my adulthood, i understand that these are implied if not outright stated to be ecstasy) and then goes out "on the town" in female attire and almost gets hate crime for it. as a child, i thought he had taken bernadette's hormones, with my childlike understanding that these had a rapid female-izing effect on him. looking back on it now i am thinking if i had such a complete lack of understanding of how hrt works, i was definitely too young to be watching all the violence, profanity, sexual references (including csa references) and racism that the film also contains. my apologies for the sheer unadulterated Australianism of this post.

First Movie of 2023
The Wonder
Tumblr media
Man, what a way to start!
I was reminded about this movie when I watched Bernadette Banner’s annual review of all the historical costume movies released over the past year.  And she listed this movie’s costumes in the highest honor of “’Tis Peak”...so I figured I better watch it at least for the clothes.
But honestly, even if the clothes weren’t “peak”, this would still be a damn good movie.
The movie stars Florence Pugh as an English nurse in 1862 who travels to Ireland to observe an 11-year-old girl who has not eaten since her birthday...four months ago.  She and a nun take turns watching the girl to see how she has been able to survive for so long without eating.
This is the definition of a slow burn, and when I looked up reviews prior to watching the film, that seemed to be the main complaint of people who didn’t like the movie...calling it ponderously slow, etc.  But to me, it just built up this tension as you are trying to figure out what is going on just as much as Florence Pugh.  There are times when you almost think it’s going to turn into a horror film, the tension is so high.
Speaking of Florence Pugh, she gives an absolutely fantastic performance in this film.  Very subdued yet strong.  And I have to give a shoutout to the young actress who plays Anna: Kila Lord Cassidy...her performance is absolutely haunting.  She completely mesmerizes the audience as she stares out with those huge eyes.
I don’t want to say too much, as it really is best going in not knowing more than what you see in the trailer...but I will say that a lot of this movie is based around the argument of science vs. faith...and there were some moments that had me yelling at my TV.  Also, this movie passes the “phone test”, as I did not look at my phone or laptop once during the entire movie...which feels like such a rare thing nowadays.
And this movie looks gorgeous!!  Though I suppose having the lush Irish scenery certainly helps...but there are some really beautiful shots.
And to swing back to the costumes...I 100% agree with Bernadette Banner.
‘Tis Peak.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Eric Williford’s COLD BLOWS THE WIND is intoxicating! Ultra low budget indie horror gives me hope for the future of the genre when I come across something like this. This is exactly the movie for a balmy summer night.
We follow married couple Tasha (Victoria Vertuga) and Dean (Danell Leyva) in the aftermath of hitting a man with their car. Questionable choices are made. Namely, to bury the body instead of calling the police. This will all turn out fine, I’m sure, especially with someone spying on them through the evocatively lit trees. When a woman (Jamie Bernadette) shows up the door frantically pleading for help, that’s when things really take a turn for our bickering protagonists.
The ensuing story is hard to take your eyes off of, helped tremendously by the performances of the three leads. Vertuga, arguably with the trickiest role, really impressed me throughout with the choices she was making as an actor. Anyone who’s ever been in a tense situation with a long term partner will easily identify with a lot of this dialogue that had me laughing out loud for a lot of the runtime; when I wasn’t being extremely unnerved, that is. Most of that due to Bernadette having a ghoulishly delightful time being as creepy as humanly possible. The casting of Leyva is crucial to the film working, as he’s hunky enough to make you completely buy in to Vertuga’s character making the choices that she will make throughout. I’d happily have helped him cover up a murder, too.
The story feels like a campfire tale, half remembered from childhood, the way you would have imagined it in your head. It’s spooky, silly*, and just the right amount of horny that’s so often missing from the movies anymore. If Jason Blum had gotten his hands on this, he’d instantly green light three sequels and a prequel - and I’d happily watch them all.
*this has the best use of crazy hair since URBAN LEGEND, and is worth watching for that alone.

In this class I got to watch Candyman for the first time, both 1992 and 2020. I had always heard of the franchise, but I was always too scared to watch them, but I am glad that this class gave me the opportunity to overcome that fear as it was completely worth it. To touch on Candyman 1992 first, I liked it at the beginning but as the movie progressed it kind of became almost disrespectful in a way. Specifically, the time of the movie where Helen went to Cabrini Green. Watching and learning about the struggles to be Black through a white person’s lens was distasteful for me. I think the message would have been better received coming from Helen’s best friend, Bernadette. Another thing that I was not very fond of in the movie was that Candyman was not seeking anything important and was not even the main character in his own movie. For the most part of the film he solely chased and sought Helen providing the major theme of “pursuit of a white woman by a Black man”. It did even feel like he was a villain for the majority like it just felt like he was obsessed with her and getting her to join him was his only goal. Now on to what I did enjoy. I liked that this was the first Black villain which brought about a feeling of inclusion. Like Black people can get these major roles too. I also liked the incorporation of the “say my name 5 times” theme. It reminded me of the childhood tales your older cousins would tell you as a kid to try to scare you.
We also got the opportunity to watch Candyman 2020 and that was a lot more enjoyable for me personally. I enjoyed that the main character was an artist and we got to see what it is like to be Black in a work field of that caliber. Like just hearing people say that he should be using his trauma to his advantage and putting it into his art. Almost like his art couldn’t just be art, it had to be Black art. I also enjoyed how the movie touched on Black horror through a Black lens. Some examples being police brutality and gentrification. Police brutality actually becomes a major theme in the film where to even become Candyman you have to first be murdered by the police. Anthony is an example of this. At the end of the movie, after his arm is sawed off and replaced with the hook, he is later killed by the police and becomes Candyman where he later comes back to kill all of the police officers on the scene and save Breanna. In conclusion, the newer Candyman did a great job at addressing and resolving the issues that I had with Candyman (1992).

Audra and Bernadette: The Last Remaining Ladies in Red
Audra McDonald vs. Christine Baranski Bebe Neuwirth vs. Bernadette Peters
Tumblr media
It's just an objective fact that Audra and Bernadette are two of Broadway's foremost Divas. It's going to come down to this soon enough. But for now, here we are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Audra and Bernadette overlapped just one episode on The Good Fight before Bernadette's character was carted off to prison (again, bigger Good Fight post later).
Tumblr media
Along with an overflow of talent riches, Audra and Bernadette appeared on "Broadway for Orlando - What the World Needs Now is Love," a single release to raise money for the LGBT Center of Central Florida in the wake of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016. Coincidentally, Bernadette and Audra featured in back-to-back solos. Divas included: Andréa Burns, Carmen Cusack, Judy Kuhn, Rebecca Luker, Andrea Martin, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Kelli O’Hara, Bernadette Peters, and Lillias White, among many other Broadway stars.
youtube
It's complete coincidence I continue to feature things that just so happen to contain Donna Murphy (thereby keeping her alive and well in this tournament).
Bernadette and Audra also starred in two separate film versions of Annie, based on the Broadway musical. Bernadette in the original 1982 version as Lily St. Regis (alongside Carol Burnett and Tim Curry, holy shit what a trio); Audra as Grace Farrell in the 1999 made-for-TV version, where her casting caused controversy for exactly the reasons you're assuming.
youtube
I favored the 1999 version myself, specifically because I was deeply in love with Audra, who was a young woman in her late twenties and already a three-time Tony winner.
youtube
There are no other Annie options. That is all.

I found this week’s discussion surrounding “Candyman” to be insightful, due to the topics surrounding its problematic themes and how each adaptation differs with their own elements. One of the problematic themes that Professor Due brought up in lecture was the fact that Cabrini-Green was painted out in this horrible lens to represent housing projects in a completely disrespectful way. I was so unaware in the moment while watching the film, but once it was mentioned and I looked back at the clips, it was horrible to think about. Not only did the directors add extra trash to the area, but they had feces on the wall in such an animalistic way. Another theme that I found problematic that was mentioned in lecture as well was the nonentity of black women. The character of Bernadette was killed off for just being in the proximity of someone who said “Candyman” five times, and being a stand-in for white audiences. Bernadette’s dialogue and fearfulness in Cabrini-Green acted as a way for white audiences to feel justified in their problematic thoughts about housing projects. I had also never thought of this before until it was mentioned in lecture, but it is so true that if Helen were the one to exclaim that the area smelled or is scared, the film would gain so much more criticism for being racist than it did. It was so much more acceptable to place that dialogue onto Bernadette, to act as that voice for white audiences. After learning about this, I was shocked that I did not realize Bernadette’s placement in the film, and has taught me to think more critically while watching films. In addition to the first adaptation, I appreciated the discussion on Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman,” and how it shifted the black trauma though a white lens, to black trauma through a black lens. I liked that the film did not show Candyman actually killing the people, and how it was still scary but not gory. It was also interesting to see themes that were more reflective on todays modern societal issues such as gentrification and leaving a toxic relationship. As someone who has grown up in the Los Angeles area, I have seen so many forms of gentrification in my own neighborhoods. So many houses and open areas that used to be for communities have been replaced with luxury apartment buildings that are highly unattainable for the people who have always lived in the area. I appreciate how more films in recent times have reflected societal issues onto their films to spread awareness of the many growing issues in todays world.
