It's like if you are in a room full of people there is only you in front of people's eyes. And this is not something that's romantic but something that there just is. Todoroki headcanons❄️🔥

For one Halloween he dressed up as kettle, for another he dressed up as his dad but he regretted doing his dad because he got told ‘wow you look exactly like your dad!” Even tho he knew he was wearing a costume, it still hurt.

Always seeks approval from someone before he does something and that’s mostly on trauma.

When it’s summer he sweats easily and ALOT even if he uses his ice side to cool him down. when it’s winter he gets cold easily but he can warm up.

When he got a phone it become a.. kind of escape for him. He can’t use it very well, but he uses it to distract himself from the world when needed.

Has one plushie from childhood. He hates it but loves it. Linked to last headcanon. Since he lost some control over it, he was scared on what his father would think if he saw that so he began to overtraining himself again. He wants to not care what his father thinks, he wants to just not care in general. But he can’t help this fear that’s inside him. Izuku noticed this and began to help him and he talked to him.

Not use to physical praise, or just praise in general. When present mic patted his head for the first time for doing well in a test he was confused and didn’t get why he was hitting his head but he also kinda liked it, so whenever he does something right in English class or does well he expects a hadpat from present mic or even asks for one. The alarm went off, this was to signal that our symbol of peace has returned to hydra base. Immediately a group of armoured soldier charged passed the labs, yelling “go, go, go”. I stopped working on my newest project on the computer and grabbed my clipboard and pen. Right on cue, rumlow enters the laboratory and shouts my name.

“Y/N! We need you at the main building.” I nodded at Rumlow and began to walk behind him, the atmosphere was heavy and tense. I wondered why.

“How’s his condition?” 

“The soldier is irritated, and unstable, not only that but it seems like he got hit badly during the mission.” Rumlow responded serious as anything.

“I will see what I can do.” I replied.

Rumlow came to a halt and opened the prison doors for me. I entered the facility. The room was cold and the machines were placed everywhere, a few broken tubes and science equipment laid on the stone floor smashed and broken.

I gazed apon the winter soldier, he looked frazzled and in a dissociative state. I grabbed the nearest chair, and dragged it along the stone floor, I sat in front of him but not for him to attack.

“Soldat?” His eyes were glossed over but he still found the strength look over at me. The winter soldier stared into my eyes, they were widened, he was clearly in a hypervigilant state.

“ты в порядке?” I questioned. He said nothing and just stared into my eyes, there was a deafening coldness that rested inside his eyes. However, The winter soldier head flinched towards the left of him, he winced in pain and grabbed his metal arm, he began to dig into the skin around the shoulder, he was erratic. I signaled the hydra soldiers, to restrain him or sedate him. The soldiers approached him with aggression and quickness, the winter soldier did not take kindly to these actions and threw them to the floor or the wall, they were knocked unconscious. I again signalled the group to take the unconscious soldiers out of the room and leave me be to my work. I noticed that the winter soldiers body was tensed, he sat upright. I sighed, I decided to sit closer to him.

“Soldat, I cannot treat your injuries if you won’t let me.” I observed his movements and noticed his body language had changed. The winter soldier gulped. I cocked my head to the side, something was the matter.

“One moment” I got up with caution and went over to the filing cabinet that was in the room, I picked out the soldiers file, It read:

Name: James Buchanan Barnes 

Age: 26 (99 years old)

Backstory: Bucky's mother died early in his life, but he grew up on Army bases with his dad and sister Rebecca, learning the ins and outs of this lifestyle at an early age. After his father died in a training accident, Bucky spent his days at Camp Lehigh in Virginia getting into trouble but also proving himself as a young man with great potential. He has a best friend called “Steve rogers” or “Captain America”

I put back the file, I took a moment and knew it wasn’t the soldier it was James, I calmly went back over to him and sat to where I was originally.

“James?” I asked softly and quietly hoping the cameras in the room didnt hear me. He gulped, and avoided eye contact with me which was unusual. I knew it was him.

“Fine since you won’t tell me who you are, Here’s what’s going to happen, I’m going to treat your injuries, and your going to tell me what made you come back to the surface, sound like a deal?” He nodded.

“ firstly I’m going to need you to calm down, or they will continue to brainwash you. I understand it’s hard considering everything. But your going to have to trust me” my tone of voice was authoritative, but it was secretly laced with sympathy.

“Fine.” His voice cracked. Almost in defeat.

I went over to grab a first aid kit. And the stand in the corner that was filled with other medical materials.

“So, do you have a preferred nickname or anything?” I asked attempting to try and distract him.

“Bucky. I think.” His eyes darted to the right, like he was remembering something.

“Hello Bucky, I’m your doctor.” I gave him a polite smile. I began to get out bandages and antiseptic wipes, and other necessities. I started on the large gash on his right shoulder, I dabbed around the wound.

“Why did you come back?” I asked.

“I- um. I saw someone. I knew him.” He looked so frustrated, and defeated at the same time. His conflicted feelings were painted on his face.

Bucky mumbled to himself “I knew him.”

“Do you remember anything else?” I questioned calmly.

“A feeling.”

“Like what?”

“Warm.” He replied. I simply nodded at him.

I examined the gash. It needed stitching, I grabbed my needle and sanitized string.

“Bucky. I need to stitch this back up. Your going to have to stay as still as possible”

“…i knew him…” he mumbled again. I sighed at him. I felt sorry for him. I continued on with treating him.

After a while, his first round of treatment (as the others called it) was due. I packed away my medical supplies and stood at the outlines of the room. Soldiers filtered in around the place. We were expecting a superior today. So everything had to be in order. Somebody had contacted Pierce Morgan due to the winter soldier hypervigilant state.

Pierce Morgan walks into the facility with confidence and purpose, his minions followed behind him, like a lost dog. Bucky sits there and stares into oblivion. Pierce took one look at him and knew something was the matter, Pieces eyes hardened. His head slightly turned to the left almost like he was analysing, the winter soldier I could tell that he was planning on something.

“put him under” his voice bellowed in the echoey walls, I’ve watched Bucky body, tense up, his breathing starts becoming uneven. As he begins to shake in what seems like fear. For the first time I began to question my job.

Another scientist came over to Bucky and strapped him in to the machine. The scientist put the mouthguard into Bucky‘s mouth, he was not in a stable state I wanted to protest against Pierce Morgan’s decision, however I knew I would gain consequences and not good ones.

“Zap him.” Morgan gave the signal to activate the machine.

Bucky knew he couldn’t defend himself. I could see it in his eyes that he knew that he couldn’t. The scientist charge the machine up, next thing you knew a blood, curling scream, could be heard throughout the building his movements became uncontrollable, tears form in his eyes, the sense of guilt settled my stomach, I felt ashamed I couldn’t help but look down, I refused to look at Bucky . There was no sympathy for him, in this facility, He was only seen as a killing machine, he was only being used for hydras peace.

After the treatment was over, he was taken out of the machine I saw an immediate change. There was only numbness in his face, no emotions, expressionless. Pierce Morgan and his goons left.

Soldiers and the scientist all left the room, leaving me in the quiet. I felt responsible and I wanted to help him escape, but I knew deep down after all these years he would do so himself.

I observed Bucky, there was nothing, there was no emotion or anything.

When it becomes apparent that he's gonna drown right alongside his dad if he doesn't stop — he's kinda forced to save himself. He goes no contact outside of winter months to bring him supplies and make sure he doesn't die of hypothermia. Can't even bear to look at him for how it hurts. But this is a VERY slow motion train wreck. Over seventeen fucking years of trying with him, of sacrificing his own future in this town and working a dead end job, of hoping to make progress when there's NONE. And yet he STILL CAN'T GET HIMSELF TO LEAVE HIS DAD FOR DEAD —slams fist on table—

And then one day he's miraculously cured. In a few hours. By twelve year olds. And there's an apocalypse. All these fucking questions Tate has, and feeling absolutely fucking worthless, oh the emotional devastation I'm gonna write when he finally has that fucking talk with his newly-sane dad.

And surprise the mental breakdowns were actually temporary ✨brain damage✨ Tate had his memories wiped whenever he got too close. He's actually so smart and extremely capable but he still never stood a fucking chance, he was trapped in a vicious cycle the instant he stepped foot in city limits.

Tate reconnecting with his dad and un-learning the years of damage done to him by a classist, unaccommodating school system and broken family. Learning who his dad is as a person, the bittersweetness of filling each other in on their entire life stories, figuring out what they had a right to know all along but fate robbed them of it. Seeing how similar they are despite having been totally separated. Healing and trying to do enough right by one another to make up for all that lost time.

Tate learning to show emotion again, touching his Appalachian roots, and un-learning a fear of hubris so strong that it terrifies him of even trying to make good use his inherited intelligence. Growing up, Linden was always careful. whether that be in the literal sense (growing up surrounded by trees getting chopped down made you pretty situationally aware) or more abstract (always making sure there was enough money, to never run out). Linden always had enough, although the definition of enough was certainly nothing like the capitol’s. Her parents took care of her, their little house had enough blankets to keep warm, and though food money was tight, there was always dinner.

  Life wasn’t kind, but it wasn’t bad.

  Her parents liked her, even if they weren’t always around. They were busy, in the woods. An only child, Linden was left in their little home alone often, told to amuse herself and not to get into trouble.Until she got big enough to start working in the woods, hauling wood from the felled trees to the trucks that would take them to the train, or wherever it was they went. And then, she was handed a saw, and she was cutting those trees into wooden chunks. Pay was about the same, but she enjoyed staying in one place a lot more, even if it was an equally physically demanding job.

  She had her friends, though. The people she grew up with, the ones she gossiped with. And one boy, Barc, who she… well, they were a bit more than friends for a few years. Until the day that Linden found out she was pregnant. She told him the next morning, and while she hadn’t been sure what to expect (they were both so young, only nineteen) she had expected to see him again. But she didn’t. The very next day, he’d transferred away to another lumber yard. Last she heard, he was learning to operate those loaders. She could’ve followed, but the message was clear.

  He was out. She was doing this alone.

  Her dad died that winter. Cholera, maybe, or the flu. They never called a doctor. Something bad had left him coughing for days until he’d stilled, and then gone into the ground. Her mother and her both had to work harder to keep the food and the lights coming. And then, near the end, she couldn’t work at all. She could’ve tried, but her mom didn’t let her, insisting she stay home with the new baby: Elowyn Understory. And little Ellie needed her mom, so Linden obliged.

  Linden stayed with Ellie as long as she could, took care of cooking and washing and budget and everything she could. She was grateful to her mom’s working so hard for them both. Too hard, as it  would turn out. One day, Oaklynn came home from work on a stretcher. This time, unlike with dad, Linden called a doctor. Contact with a machine went badly, and while Oaklynn survived, she wouldn’t be able to work again. But she was alive, and Linden was more than grateful for that. Even if it put her into debt, even if she’d spend years paying it off.

  So back to work Linden went, and an almost year old Ellie stayed home with her grandmother. Linden had to work harder than she’d ever worked before, and mealtimes were thinner than ever. but it was worth it. She was able to provide for them both, the two best girls in panem. Linden counted herself lucky to be able to take care of them. And she would’ve been comfortable doing that forever, if she hadn’t been reaped for 135.

  Well, if she wins, she’ll be able to take care of them forever. So she better win, because who else is going to?

I Was a Queer Salvation Army Bell Ringer

Part 1: Job Searching and the Application Process

I have decided to just bite the bullet and start writing about this to get it all off my chest. I had been doing some research, and there is still some research I intend to do, but it is beside the main point of this mostly anecdotal writing I intend to do. I also decided to make it basically a miniseries as opposed to one long post dumping about everything.

So here we go.

It was the end of October of this year, 2023, and I needed a new washing machine. Between that and the upcoming holiday season, I figured the time was right to get a seasonal job. Surely there would be plenty available, right?

Well, honestly, no. Even during this time of year, job searching was pretty miserable. Job searching has been pretty miserable in general, but even the added jobs to cover the busy Christmas season were pretty miserable. They have a reputation for being easy to get, but I didn't get any sort of word back from most of the seasonal positions I applied to. And that didn't even factor in my limited availability, which would have been the nail in the coffin for most retail positions since I wouldn't be able to help out on any infamous Black Friday sales.

But while hunting for a seasonal job, one listing caught my eye that seemed unusual: Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army.

Not unusual for the reason you might think, however. I had actually worked as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army before back in the autumn and winter of 2006. I was a college student and unaware at the time both of the Salvation Army's anti-queer reputation and my own place in the queer community. I was starting to get hints that I was queer in the classic bisexual-to-asexual pipeline, but I wouldn't learn the term asexual and realize it applied to me until 2010.

What I was surprised about is that I thought they were volunteer only for bell ringers NOW, because it had been some time since I had seen a listing. On top of that, the pay was. Ok, the pay wasn't good by my own personal metrics because almost none of the local job listings are paying well. But the listed pay was better than the state minimum wage. More on that later.

So I decided, "Fuck it. If they choose to hire me, I can't resist the irony of the Salvation Army willingly giving a queer person money."

I clicked the 1-tap apply button on my job search app.

This resulted in an email being sent to me asking me to apply online through the Salvation Army's website. Weird since that defeats the purpose and convenience of the 1-tap apply button, but whatever. I do the thing we all have to do nowadays where you create an account that you know you're never going to use again and apply for the job.

I get a call a couple of days later. It's the woman from the Salvation Army heading up the red kettle program. She asks me to come to the office and fill out a paper application. For some reason, sunk cost fallacy perhaps, I agree and continue with the Sisyphean effort of applying for this job.

When I actually go to the office, I find flyers for the bell ringing job. These advertise that no, they are only offering minimum wage pay for it instead of the range listed on the app. I wish I had taken a screenshot of it because I can't find it now, but my best guess on what happened is the job search app added an estimated range on the job, as it sometimes does, and I missed the part where it said, "estimated pay." My memory is not necessarily a thing to be trusted, but job listings aren't either, so at least we're a match on that.

I fill out the paper application, and I'm informed that orientation is next week. No job interview, no hemming or hawing, the simple act of applying has got me in. They're just looking for warm bodies that are mobile enough to ring a bell. This makes sense to some degree, and indeed it was part of the appeal of the job. I knew from past experience that it is a simple job that requires minimal to no training, theoretically the easiest money one can make without being born into it.

Just like that, I was once again a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

HERE ARE MY TIME SAVING, JOY SPARKING WELLNESS LESSONS/REMINDERS FOR MYSELF AT THIS TIME THAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE:

I cannot express how LAUGHABLE of a venture it was to expect myself to ever reasonably keep up with essentially a 6 days/week workout routine in the midst of the biggest life transition I'm experiencing thus far. This semester we are focusing on fitting in a 1 hour session only 2-3x/week, that hits both strength training AND cardio - the name of the game is efficiency!!! Aerobic, weight-bearing, heart-rate elevating, fat-burning, full body, FUNCTIONAL, ATHLETIC. I'm accepting that certain other goals (e.g. flexibility) will have to take a backseat for the time being. It's looking like a lot of HIIT, double compounds (e.g. squat to shoulder press), minimal equipment ->

I'm done with waiting in lines for popular machines!!! WHO HAS THE TIME!!! I've also learned the value of simplifying your needs as much as possible the so that your ability to stay consistent with your workouts is not limited to exclusive, fancy equipment that ties you down to a particular studio/gym e.g. kind of a meme but I got so used to the hip thrust machine at my giant suburban gym just to basically never see it again. I PRAY for the day I am able to rely on body weight calisthenics alone, but until then, there's so much magic in a bare-bones bench + dumbbells gym, and almost everywhere you go will have that

for the first time in an extremely long time, one of my primary goals this time around is actually weight loss - there's a whole lot more I can say about this but for now, one of the primary reasons is the fact that I will be in Korea for the first time ever this summer ifykyk lol. but starvation is never the means nor the ends, especially given how much GLUCOSE my brain requires during these long days. the biggest revelation = The Only Bean Edamame Beans, they have a 11g protein :110cal ratio (same ratio as those pure protein bars) and go down wayyy better bc it's real food and not processed powder (I'm still learning to tolerate protein powder). They come individually packed too so SO good for on the go!!!!

I've been liking TJ's flavored cashews too - not the best macro profile (like all nuts) but are so easy to pack for a study session and don't go bad quickly

The Palm Springs Art Museum exhibits works of art, natural history, and the performing arts. The museum has been open since the late 1930s and used to focus nearly entirely on desert subjects and artists. This spot will blow your mind!

The museum features a vast collection of Native American arts, crafts and artefacts and great art. The museum also has a natural science collection that displays creatures and fossils, making it a terrific destination for kids and families to visit!

On the grounds, there are additionally two outdoor sculpture gardens. Get a taste of the date palms

Did you know Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley have a long agricultural heritage? Yes! You read it right! Dates are an important crop in the area, producing more than 90% of the dates farmed in the United States! This Middle Eastern fruit was initially cultivated in the desert in the early twentieth century, and it is one of the few crops that can be grown year-round in the region’s harsh climate.

The Shields Date Garden is located near Indio, roughly 30 minutes from Palm Springs. The nearly 20-acre date farm has a cafe, an informative tour of the date groves, and even a theatre screening a 1940s film about date farming. They also sell date shakes, a must-have date milkshake-like smoothie that every visitor to Palm Springs should experience!

Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium’s barrel cactus

On the southern end of Palm Canyon Drive, just outside Palm Springs, are the Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium. The extraordinary natural area features an amazing display of cacti and other desert flora, ranging from mature trees to newly sprouting plants. The gardens are at their best in the spring when the desert begins to blossom, and the trees are turning green again.

Although Moorten is open all year round, you can receive a free guided tour of the facilities from fall through spring as part of your admission.

In addition to being a botanical garden, the grounds also function as a business nursery where you can buy some plants to take home with you!

We've hit Winter Monday in the Chill Valicer Save with this update, still racing to try and fill up the last shelves in the store so we can actually OPEN Van Liddelton Groceries at some point! Let's start right where we left off, with the gang working on making product and getting through their morning chores on the farm --

-->In fact, we are starting almost exactly where we left off, as right after Alice decided to curl up for a wolf nap on the floor of the barn, Kelly wandered in and started meowing in her ear, waking her up. XD A very annoyed Alice lectured the cat on not doing that, and to my surprise, Kelly not only listened, but actually learned Not To Wake Sims Up! So that was nice, at least. However, as she was already awake, Alice dragged herself over to the bulk processing machine to make some boxes of strawberry and raspberry jam, then used her werewolf super-speed to go have a REAL sleep in her and Victor's bed. A lot more comfortable than the barn floor, that's for sure!

-->While this was going on, Smiler finished off another chatterbot, then got sent out on a different mission -- mainly, they got exiled to the nearby pond to fish on the pier! No, I did not care that it was snowing at the time, Smiler's a vampire and thus immune to temperature. XD My goal there was to load up on fishies because I'd abruptly remembered that there was a product on the bulk processor that I hadn't even TRIED to make before -- namely, cans of processed fishcakes! And of course, for fishcakes, you need fish, and Smiler is the Sim who has the most experiencing fishing, so. . .they basically spent the rest of the morning on that dock, doing their best to stock their inventory with as much fish as possible. And as you can see, they made some impressive catches -- in the end, they ended up with a beautiful tuna, a couple of sturgeons, a couple of common upgrade parts, some perches, a minnow, and no less than FOUR catfish, who apparently REALLY like the chamomile Smiler was using as bait. Not bad at all, huh?

-->Victor, meanwhile, spent a good portion of his morning molding candles in canary yellow and shale gray shades -- which, as you can see, involves a lot of boring standing around. Like, seriously, can we speed this process up a little? *sigh* He did eventually complete both candles and headed over to the greenhouse to tend the plants -- I do have to admit, it is always kind of amusing to see him using that giant weed vacuum to suck the dandelions right out of the garden patches. XD His needs were looking like garbage after the initial tending, though, so -- after realizing he didn't have any Potions of Plentiful Needs in his inventory -- I grabbed him some Moodlet Solver so he could get himself back in tip-top shape and get on that harvest! Can't let the plants remain unpicked, after all!

-->Alice woke up in good time thanks to how great her and Victor's bed is, and quickly rejoined the productivity train -- after cleaning the litter boxes, cleaning herself (with the power of werewolf licking), and feeding Toothy, she was back on the bulk processor making boxes of cheese with the milk I'd preloaded in there! She also made some more bulk bags of sugar for canning purposes, which, hilariously, unlocked the Simple Living Cookbook as a book she could write. I -- I don't think making an industrial-sized sack of fruit-based sugar on a giant yellow bulk food processing machine is QUITE in keeping with the spirit of the Simple Living lot trait, game! Even if it DOES require Alice to have all the necessary ingredients. XD

-->With the crops harvested and the cookbook unlocked (and Smiler still very much on fishing duty), it was time to tend to the animals. Alice cleaned the chicken coop, made sure everyone was fed, and gathered the eggs (four normal nonhatchable ones, yay), while Victor checked up on Moory and gave her a good milking. Alice then hopped back on the bulk processor to make the first box of canned fishcakes from the fish Smiler had caught so far while I dumped a bunch of the wrapped white meat from the chickens she'd "sold," some custard, and some blueberries in her inventory for transport to the store. And got HER a Moodlet Solver as well as her own needs were starting to flag. She then made a bit more cheese and did a quick Somber Howl while Victor cleaned up all the various plates around the place (surprising me when he did so in the greenhouse -- I'd forgotten the sink that's on the decorative "potting bench" I put in there is actually, you know, a legit sink)...

And then, after a brief dance break in the living room, it was time to get Smiler back and send everybody off to the store! Because, as previously stated, we have SHELVES TO FILL, DAMN IT. No fun allowed until that happens!

Oh this is just a demonstration, as I've said i want to show you a bit about how this works so you know about what to expect and possibly how to modify it.

This whole room has a shield protecting it's walls so it doesn't take damage from stray shots or the like. The environments, enemies and their gears and even abilities are build up from very VERY tiny machines. They can emulate the look and effect of a lot of things ranging from an inferno to the coldest Winter and from a tiny bug to a mighty dragon. This whole person here-- *I shove the "Person" beside me to the Right and they fall over before getting back up in an anatomically correct manner using their limbs* --is fully intractable and will react to and input accordingly. Watch--

*After i said this i pull out a pretty standard firearm from a holster take aim and Shoot them in the chest with it. Causing the "Person" to buckle, let out a pained groan and red to run down their shirt before they collapse to the ground*

--As you can see they react like a Human would to input. A Defeated Opponent will either vanish immediately or stay around depending on the setting for the active training session. *As i say this the "Person" disappears again only to reappear standing upright again where they previously stood.*

Their Attacks work a little differently, after all we can't go around killing the Trainees can we? When the system detects a Crippling or Mortal blow the simulation will halt and inform the Trainee about the nature of their Hit and, depending on setting will give assistance in how to potentially prevent such an Incident.

The Damage to the surroundings will however not halt, for example if one of them shoots at a building with a rocket launcher the building will take damage accordingly. If someone where to be mortally hit there, either from the hit itself or flying debris, it would once again stop. This is also why the "Dummies" have weaponry made from the same tiny machines, if they where to use real weapons they could not simply stop again and similarly why the Environment is made from them as well. And just as a side note on Team trainings the teams weapons would also be made from them as to prevent Friendly fire incidents, that one was hard learned...

The Goal of these kinds of Training facilities originally was to prepare Soldiers and especially shock troops for Combat but can be adapted to this kind of exercise as well. The Aim was to build as Realistic Scenarios as possible so our Troops would have the best possible preparation for their Job. This is a tiny facility compared to the ones build in specialized Training sites.

It’s been 7 years since Civil War and I still mourn for the Bucky Barnes story we should’ve gotten.

I mourn for how quickly they showed him integrated back into society after CATWS. One moment he’s almost killing his best friend... and the next moment he’s living on his own and seems just fine. Sure, he’s a little quiet and awkward and sad, but he’s mostly pretty normal. Outside of the first half of Civil War, there’s very little evidence at all that would lead anyone to believe Bucky used to be the world’s most feared assassin, who was trained and molded into the perfect weapon through unimaginable pain and psychological manipulation. This man spent the better part of his life as a ruthless, mindless killing machine programmed to do nothing more than follow orders. You don’t just walk away from that without being fundamentally and irreversibly psychologically altered. Even the removal of the trigger words wouldn’t change that.

To clarify, I’m not talking about his lingering feelings of guilt and sadness. I think Seb has done a great job with getting that part across at least. I’m talking about his behavior. About way he interacts with other people and how he handles situations. He doesn’t act like a formerly-brainwashed ex-assassin who was treated as less than human for literal decades and who, by all accounts, should have the most severe form of PTSD known to man.

I just don’t buy the Bucky we see post-CATWS and particularly post-Civil-War. I don’t buy that Bucky would be joking around and flirting and basically acting like Just Some Guy – a grumpy guy but still Just Some Guy – and his recent haircut sure isn’t helping the situation either. That he wouldn’t always be a little bit on edge, a little bit animal (kinda like the way we see him at the beginning of Civil War but then never again). That being in the heat of battle wouldn’t sometimes make him either shut down or completely snap and go into a violent fugue state where he subconsciously reverts back to the brutally efficient methods of the Winter Soldier (we almost got this in TFATWS but they couldn’t commit).

Now maybe he received some absolutely incredible therapy in Wakanda. Maybe it worked wonders on him! The problem is I don’t buy it because I never saw it. I never got to see him struggle to learn how to be a person again. I never got to see him fight back against the thing Hydra turned him into.

It just sucks because I love everything about the concept of Bucky and the Winter Soldier, but the parts they’ve chosen not to show or address are, in my opinion, the most interesting parts of his character. But more than that, the lack of follow through and disconnect between what he was and who he seems to be now makes it really hard for me to see him as a fully-realized person in canon. It’s like my brain registers perfectly who he was in CATFA/CATWS and even kinda sorta now in TFATWS, but there’s this giant chasm in between them that mentally feels like fuzzy static.

How long did it take him to fully shake off the brainwashing and conditioning? When did he start thinking of himself as a human being with agency again? Did he ever have to fight the desire to return to Hydra, the only thing he’s known for 70 years, or was it an easy choice? How long did it take him to start recovering his memories? Has he recovered all of them? Does he now remember everything that happened before and during his time at Hydra? How long did it take him to stop flinching at every sound and expecting Hydra to track him down? How long did it take him to relearn how to interact with people like a normal person? How did he afford food and shelter between CATWS and CACW? How and why did he end up in Romania? Did he travel there immediately after CATWS or did he live somewhere else first? Did he get actual therapy in Wakanda or did they just work their science-magic to remove the trigger words and send him on his way? Is the the soldier still in there? Does he still have to consciously stop himself from using deadly force every time he’s in a fight? Is that why he deliberately avoids carrying any weapons now?

I have so many questions.

Fortunately we have fic and fanon to help fill the void but we shouldn’t have to. Bucky Barnes is one of the most interesting and unique characters to ever exist. There’s so much good stuff to dig into here and it’s been wasted.

They squandered the original opportunity to explore this part of his character when they turned Cap 3 into an Iron Man film, a decision I will forever be mad about (fuck you RDJ/Tony for stealing Bucky’s movie), but they finally had the perfect chance to make up for that with TFATWS! Bucky was getting his own show (6 hours of content!), and with it, plenty of time to really dig into his psyche and lingering trauma! I had hoped to see him relapsing a bit and falling into old patterns. Or maybe being triggered by something and having a panic attack. Or even just talking about his time in Hydra and how it felt to be used like that and his struggles to regain his humanity afterwards (instead they fucking gave Hawkeye the emotional “I was a weapon” speech that Bucky rightfully deserved). But other than that opening nightmare, a few brief teasing lines from Zemo about the solider still being in there (which was never followed through on), and the shittiest excuse for “therapy” I’ve ever seen, we really got nothing.

From everything they’ve shown us, and particularly from the ending of TFATWS, it’s clear Marvel believes Bucky has already “healed” and there’s little left to discuss or explore and it makes me incredibly sad.
