It was particularly dangerous during the Jim Crow era. Black motorists frequently found themselves turned away at motels, coffee shops, even gas stations. Pass through an all-white town after dark, and they could be arrested – or lynched.
It was a perilous time, but one New Yorker made it easier.
His name was Victor Green, and for decades he wrote and self-published a guide called The Green Book. It first came out in 1936, and each year’s issue provided an updated, state-by-state list of businesses that faithfully served black customers. “Carry your Green Book with you,” its cover advised. “You may need it!”
Yes, that should sound like a warning to black drivers; it was that dangerous.
That African-Americans drove through the country at all was a tribute to determination. When the Green Book debuted during the Depression, the average price of a car was $760, six month’s wages for most blacks. Many banks wouldn’t give them loans; most insurers wouldn’t write policies.
Some dealerships refused to sell to African-Americans – even if they paid in cash. General Motors management worried that black customers would cheapen the Cadillac brand and scare off white buyers. The company relented when they realized how popular the car was with black celebrities.
Once black motorists managed to get a car, their troubles took new turns. Of the nation’s gas stations, only one chain, Esso, regularly welcomed African-Americans. Finding a hotel or cafe was even harder. Black families setting out for a drive learned to bring containers of gasoline in case they ran out, and they packed food because eating in restaurants was so chancy. Longer excursions? Best to pack some blankets in case you had to park somewhere and sleep in your car.
As much of a hassle as all of this planning was, it was minor compared to the actual trip. Racist cops, infuriated by the sight of black drivers, were ready to pounce. Some African-American men bought chauffeur’s caps so, if they were stopped, they could claim they were just servants running errands.
Yet if it were dangerous to be caught driving while black it was still preferable to the institutional nastiness of segregated public transportation.
“Did you ever see a Jim Crow waiting room,” W.E.B. Du Bois wrote in 1920. “You stand and stand and wait and wait until every white person at the ‘other window’ is waited on. The agent browbeats and contradicts you, harasses and confused the ignorant, gives many persons the wrong change, compels some to purchase their tickets on the train at a higher price, and sends you and me out on the platform burning with indignation and hatred.”
Decades later, it was no different. As the movie “Green Book” dramatized, it was no easier for rich and famous African-Americans.
In 1954, Ella Fitzgerald flew out of San Francisco for an Australian tour. The first leg of her trip was fine, but when she tried to change planes in Honolulu, Pan Am refused to allow her to board. She was stranded in Hawaii for two days before Fitzgerald could find another flight. When she sued, the case was dismissed.
That was why black families would scrimp and save to buy a car. Once you had wheels, you had some control over your life, particularly if you had a Green Book in the glove compartment, listing establishments that welcomed black customers.
Some, like Manhattan’s Brooks Brothers and The Pierre hotel, were white-run, integrated havens. Most, however, were small, independent black-owned businesses, eager to serve the community. Their inclusion provided a double benefit, not only steering readers toward safe stores and lodgings but supporting African-American entrepreneurship.
In researching her book, subtitled “The Green Book and the Roots of Black Travel in America,” Taylor drove across the country, visiting as many of Green’s original recommendations as possible. Some were still standing, like the Rossonian Hotel in Denver (photo below). So was Dooky Chase’s restaurant in New Orleans, where President Obama was chastised for trying to add hot sauce to the gumbo.
Tumblr media
And as the author traveled, Taylor rediscovered a forgotten map of African-American aspiration, achievement, and entertainment.
There was the “black borscht belt” of vacation spots in northwestern Michigan, where the Idlewild resort spread over 3,000 acres, and featured rising stars like the Four Tops. Shearer Cottage in Oak Bluffs in Martha’s Vineyard began hosting prominent black guests in 1903.
There was even Murray’s Dude Ranch, in Victorville, California, a fully integrated vacation spot that catered to celebrities from white gossip columnist Hedda Hopper to African-American icon Lena Horne. Heavyweight champ Joe Louis trained there, and two all-black Westerns, “Harlem Rides the Range” and “The Bronze Buckaroo,” used the ranch for sets.
At first, the Green Book depended on establishments for its information, which could be unreliable. Harlem’s 101 Ranch, listed as a cabaret in the 1938 edition, was actually a sex club where jazzman "Pops" Foster remembered, you saw "women goin' with women, men goin' with men, people on the floor gettin' their thing." It was raided and shut down the following year.
But as his guide grew bigger, Green made sure it became more professional, too.
Articles detailed the tourist attractions of cities like San Francisco while advising readers they might find it easier obtaining accommodations in Oakland, across the bay. Advertisements pushed expensive African art and cruises to the Caribbean. Listings expanded to include coffee shops and colleges.
Green died in 1960. For a while, his widow and his staff continued publishing the guide. But as integration finally, slowly spread there seemed less and less need for his guide. In 1965, the year after the Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination, the Green Book didn’t publish at all. The 1966-67 edition was its last.
In the end, it was a casualty of the future its readers had dreamed of.
Although racists could, and still do, deny service to African-Americans, by the late ’60s, blacks could legally demand equal treatment in any establishment they visited. And once they could, they did, walking into restaurants, night clubs, hotels, and resorts that had previously turned them away.
It was good news for everybody except the African-American businesses that had once catered to the community.
Although blacks now rushed to patronize white establishments, whites were not as eager to patronize black ones. Restaurants closed. Clubs shuttered. Once-famous hotels, like New Orleans’ Marsalis Mansion – run by Wynton’s grandfather – became flophouses. And a vital, vibrant part of American history was razed then forgotten.
The lie of separate but equal had been exposed. But, sadly, some of what made that subculture not just separate and inherently unequal, but unique, was gone.
“We got what we wanted,” observed African-American activist Georgia Ayers, as she watched another historic black hotel shut down in Miami. “But we lost what we had.”

We took a tour of the Greenwell Coffee Farm, which they claim is the oldest on the island, with coffee trees dating over a hundred years old - that still produce! As we drove closer to our eastern side location, you could tell that this was the wet side as the vegetation was even more lush. We spent two (2) weeks on the west side of the island and then two (2) weeks on the east side, staying in VRBO's (Vacation Rental by Owner).

4 Best Places to Visit on Kolea
The beautiful, scenic island of Oahu has many spectacular lookout points. From atop a mountain, aside a cliff, or perhaps from your window of a high story in Waikiki, visitors are consumed by the breathtaking views available to them. This bird's eye vantage point enables you to admire the jagged coastline, observe the lush green that coats Oahu's mountains, and appreciate the gentle rhythmic tweet from the Myna bird. Several from the best Oahu lookout points are detailed below.
Tumblr media
The island of Hawaii or perhaps the Big Island may be the largest and many eastern of all of the islands. This is a volcanic island and it's also home to Mauna Kea the worlds tallest mountain. At 33,000 feet from the sea base, it can be taller than Mount Everest's 29,029 feet. Some popular attractions there include Akaka Falls, East Hawaii Cultural Center along with the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Tumblr media
Vog emitted through the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea is generally described as annoyance, but it actually helps to make beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. Particles via a flight such as dust and soot are what result in the intense red and orange diffraction of light throughout a sunset. On days in Hawaii with thick vog the sun's rays turns a deep red that is quite different from normal sunsets, but still quite breathtaking. The differing amounts of vog daily permit an intriguing variance in hue and intensity. This makes each Hawaiian sunset unique and surprising.
Tumblr media
From what I saw, Honolulu was OK... I mean, nothing crazy. It doesn't have a very real identity plus it appears like something has nothing related to the landscape that surround it. But anyway, it is not an undesirable city. Pearl Harbor is must see, yes it's! It has a great deal of history, not forgetting the USS Arizona that may add breathtaking if you feel about what happened during World War II. Then, my hotel was near Waikiki Beach... so I would have that "privilege" to unwind at a best beaches on the globe (???). I think that electronics equipment ? so appealing could be the cool location (Hawaii) and all the fancy and expensive shops that may be found around it (I don't remember fondly the brands, as I am not really a sopping-fan, but I can guarantee that they were some of the most popular ones). But as regards the specific beach, meaning the sand and the water, I was actually disappointed, cause both of them are nothing special. So I would rephrase the sentence and claim that Waikiki beach can be viewed one of many "fanciest beaches in the world" in contrast to one of several "best beaches on the globe".
Your big event day will probably be taxing and chaotic. Plan for this by scheduling it later within the day. In this way, you are able to allow ample time and energy to prepare yourself without requiring to awaken too in advance. Supposing you may get their hands on energy for it, course a snug event.

Stunning Hawaii Destinations
Allerton Estate & Garden
Those who neither get busted at the infamous Po'ipu Road speed traps nor washed off the Spouting Horn ledge -- it's sort of a saltwater Old Faithful -- because they peeked in to its hole from the ocean side, can enjoy the tropical wonders of the Allerton Estate.
It's 100 acres of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens (NTBG) that also includes the 186-acre Lawaii Gardens where part of Jurassic Park was filmed. Many experts consider the complex of the Allerton Estate and the adjacent Lawaii Gardens to be the finest tropical gardens in the Western Hemisphere.
Lawai-kai, as it is known in Hawaiian, was originally envisioned by Hawaii's Queen Emma in the late 19th century and then by Alexander McBryde at the turn of the 20th century.
The Allerton's, for whom the estate is named, added their collection of statues, topiary, and well-considered floral additions to Queen Emma's purple bougainvillea and the native plants that include many now rare species. The NTBG runs everything here for the Allerton Trust, and the NTBG greenhouses hold a number of interesting, and often endangered, species.
Visitors can enjoy both gardens and wonderful views of the bay below the estate where it's not impossible to see whales or a diver's boat. Fortunately, the weather is a lot drier here with about 36 inches a year, rather than the record 440 inches a year up on Mount Wai'ale'ale. Despite this fact, there are plenty of ponds, waterfalls, fountains, pools and other water features.
Simply put, gardeners and birders must allow more time than the usual 2 ½ hour tour. Binoculars help on arboreal blooms and the unique birds -- birder's can add five to 10 birds to most life lists. There's some walking and some riding in open-top sampans
Guided tours cost $30 each and leave from the Visitor Center across the road from the Spouting Horn.

Bishop Museum
In its earliest days, the Bishop Museum shared the grounds with the Kamehameha Schools. The school was founded by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last of the descendants of the royal line of Kamehameha, for the purpose of educating Hawaiian children. Her husband, Charles Reed Bishop had established the museum to house his wife's large collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms. Soon after, the schools were relocated nearby on a Kapalama Heights hillside. This move allowed the museum to expand its collection. Today, the museum has the largest Polynesian collections in the world with over two million artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawaii and other Pacific Island cultures. It also has one of the largest collections of natural history specimens in the world. The museum complex has broadened its focus in the past several years to include a planetarium and traveling exhibits that include everything from dinosaurs to space exploration, but the main attraction of the museum continues to be the Hawaiian artifacts of feathered war God Kukailimoku and the handmade feather capes worn by kings, high ranking warriors and other 'ali'i' of ancient Hawaii. Also, quite popular is the royal carriage, the full-scale blue whale exhibit and the grass 'hale' or hut in the main hall. The museum offers more than just static exhibits of artifacts. There are also many programs that include hands on learning experiences in craft demonstrations in lei-making, ukulele and hula for those interested in a more in-depth cultural experience. For those who look more toward the stars, the museum offers a wonderful program on Polynesian navigation and space exploration in an educational partnership with NASA. The experiences at the museum are almost all indoor, making it the perfect destination on an unexpected rainy day. Otherwise, the best time to visit would be in the middle of the day when the sun is at it's strongest and when the cool dark atmosphere brings welcomed relief. The museum has over 500,000 visitors each year and can be easily reached from Waikiki by city bus (board the #2 along Kuhio Avenue), by car (exit the H-1 at Likelike Hwy, right on Bernice street) or via Waikiki Trolley.

Chinatown
Chinatown occupies an area of approximately 25 square blocks just west of downtown Honolulu. From the mid-19th century this area became the predominant settling place for those Hawaii Chinese not working on the sugar or pineapple plantations. Devastated by fires in 1886 and again in 1900, the Chinese never returned to populate the area in the numbers they once had. Today, the name Chinatown is somewhat of a misnomer. Though it has lost none of its vitality and is still strongly colored by a Chinese ambience (even the local Bank of Honolulu has a Chinese motif), the area now is a much more eclectic mixture of Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, and Hawaiian influences. A Japanese Shinto shrine, a Chinese temple to Kwanyin, a Vietnamese noodle shop, or Filipino eatery now inhabit the same space, in what is at times an invigorating chaos.
Chinatown is currently undergoing a revival of sorts. Its cultural and historical value now recognized, many of the century old shops are being renovated and reoccupied as small restaurants or art galleries, the area's soothing sense of benign neglect attractive to boutique owners and restaurateurs. The Hawaii Theatre at Bethel and Pauahi Streets is perhaps the best showcase of this revitalization. Opened in 1922 as Hawaii's premier theatre, it fell into neglect and was nearly demolished a few years back. Reopened in 1995 following extensive renovations, it has regained a spot as one of the premier Hawaii venues for live performances and theatre.
Take a morning to stroll through Chinatown's network of streets and small shops. Saturday morning is best, when produce hawkers, fish vendors, buyers, families out for dim sum, locals, visitors, and students from the nearby university make the place a vibrant place to spend a few hours. Enjoy the varied scents of the markets (Oahu Market, established in 1904 on the corner of King and Kekaulike is a good start). The odors of local fish like aku (tuna) and opakapaka (snapper), mix with Korean kimchee, char siu (roasted pork) and incense in a feast for the senses. Maybe some ginseng is just the remedy for your sluggishness - you can find it at the local herbalist. Or treat yourself to a pig's head, they run about .75 cents a pound. Watch the old men playing Chinese chess or cards along the River Street Canal, or spend your time browsing one of Chinatown's many antique and curio shops. You can top it all off with some pho(a popular Vietnamese noodle dish) and a can of cold soy milk. After over 150 years Chinatown has retained its color and authenticity, and remains a living and colorful community of Hawaii's many cultures.

The insurance firm is prohibited from limiting or discounting cheap restore costs based mostly on costs that might have occurred if the car had been repaired at the company's recommended restore shop. Additionally, the insurance firm must stand behind the repairs of the really helpful shop if the vehicle is just not repaired properly.

Adore the Outdoors? 10 Hidden Meccas Filled With Hikers, Bikers, and Bargain Homes, 2018 Edition
Virginia Beach: Hisham Ibrahim/Getty Images
When realtor.com® published its ranking of America’s top outdoor cities last year, it caused a bit of an uproar. Why was Boulder left off, some indignantly asked. What happened to Taos? No Honolulu, no Denver, no Salt Lake City?
No indeed. Because our focus then and now is on the nation’s most affordable cities for outdoor lovers. And that, my friends, is a whole different walk in the woods.
Fact is, while “The poetry of the earth is never dead,” as Keats wrote, these days it can be pretty darn expensive to enjoy. Homes in the places famously synonymous with the great outdoors are often too pricey for mere mortals. But hold on, nature lovers! Our hardy, windburned data team set out to find the top affordable housing markets for those who want to live the outdoor life. Adventure and open-air serenity can be yours, just minutes from your backyard deck.
So what defines an outdoor town, anyway?
“If you see a lot of rugged vehicles with bike racks and hauling kayaks, that’s a telltale sign at the ground level that you’re in one of these places,” says Chris Chesak, a travel consultant based in Cincinnati. “In a conventional city, if you run into someone you haven’t seen in a long time, they’ll say, ‘let’s grab a beer.’ In an outdoors city, they’ll meet up for a hike. The primary focus isn’t sitting around—it’s being outside.”
To pinpoint the best places for al fresco enthusiasts, we started with the 150 largest metropolitan areas with median home prices below $300,000. (A metropolitan statistical area is a designation that includes the urban core of a city and surrounding areas measured by a high commuting rate into the city.) Then we factored in the following criteria:
Share of homes with outdoor patios, outdoor kitchens, and decks
Bicycle-friendliness rating
Per capita kayaking, rafting, and outdoor gear stores
Number of campgrounds
Share of restaurants with outdoor seating
Per capita of conservation scientists and foresters (sign of heavy park presence)
Number of national parks in the state
Percentage of residents who live within a 10-minute walk of a park
So ditch Netflix and power down the iPhone X. Let’s hit the trails to find America’s hidden outdoor meccas.
1. Spokane, WA
Median home list price: $295,100
The Upper Spokane River
csfotoimages/iStock
Northern California native Gina Erigero, 19, fell in love with Spokane, and its outdoorsy culture, on a high school volleyball tournament trip. Now she’s a sophomore at Gonzaga University in the city, about four hours inland from Seattle, and is taking full advantage of the outdoor fun.
“When you go in a bar, you’ll see fliers up for rock climbing, camping trips, and running groups” instead of for shows, Erigero says.
When she’s not running along the Spokane River or camping with friends, she’s hitting the slopes. Growing up, she’d visit Lake Tahoe where a day pass can cost over $200. In Spokane she usually pays $45 for a day of skiing. The area also has a big climbing scene at Mount Spokane.
The more adventurously inclined can go rafting on the river or zip lining over mountain streams about a half-hour outside the city.
The housing market in Spokane is packed with single-family homes with one- and two-car garages and with some trees on the property, including this three-bedroom Craftsman priced at $249,900. The home has a one-car garage, raised garden beds, and a deck.
2. Bakersfield, CA
Median home list price: $260,000

California has Redwood forests, cliff-lined beaches along the Pacific, and picturesque, vineyard-laced landscapes. But what ordinary humans can afford to buy homes in most of those achingly beautiful locales? That’s where suburban, inland Bakersfield—about two hours north of Los Angeles—comes in.
Skeptical? Just hear us out.
It’s all about proximity here. The world-renowned Sierra Nevada Mountains, a must-see for mountain climbers and hikers alike, starts just north of Bakersfield. Sequoia National Forest, with the greatest concentration of giant sequoia groves in the world, is just shy of a two-hour drive north of the city. And the beaches at Morro Bay along the coast are also reachable.
And Bakersfield’s own Kern River Parkway Trail, used by pedestrians and cyclists, runs along the Kern River for more than 20 miles.
“We have Buena Vista Lake that’s only about 30 minutes outside of town. That’s where a lot of people like to wakeboard and water-ski,” says William Gordon, a real estate agent at Gordon Team Realty in Bakersfield. “You can drive an hour and be in the mountains and be hiking.”
Bakersfield homes come with a relatively modest price tag, listed for about half of the median for the rest of the state. Buyers who enjoy the great outdoors often choose the City in the Hills area on the edge of town, which boasts killer mountain views, Gordon says.
Note: Bakersfield would have made the No. 1 spot due to affordability and proximity, but poor air quality bumped it down to No. 2.
3. Tallahassee, FL
Median home list price: $225,000
Tallahassee, Florida
RiverNorthPhotography/iStock
The Florida Panhandle is a hiker’s paradise, where trailgoers will spot everything from coastal dune lakes to swamps packed with exotic wildlife. The biggest city in the panhandle is Tallahassee, just minutes from the start of the Apalachicola National Forest, a  630,000-acre retreat covered in pine trees and a local favorite for hiking, off-road biking, and riding four-wheelers. Spotting red-cockaded woodpeckers is an everyday occurrence here.
Folks in Florida’s capital appreciate the outdoors. One-story abodes in suburban communities with backyard patios and decks for their owners to relax on are common. They include this three-bedroom Craftsman with a screened porch and a fenced backyard for $229,900.
For those who want to take in the natural beauty of the Florida Panhandle (and don’t mind heights), there is the Tracer Hot Air Balloons, a hot air balloon company that offers morning and afternoon rides in Tallahassee.
4. Kalamazoo, MI
Median home list price: $269,500
Downtown Kalamazoo
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
Kalamazoo has the kind of outdoor fun and natural beauty that some might be surprised to find in a major Michigan city—and it’s perfect for campers. Folks enjoy setting up their recreational vehicles and tents at the Kalamazoo RV Park and Campground. It boasts a number of ponds, lakes, and creeks nearby that are perfect for fishing. And residents here can kayak or canoe on the Kalamazoo River, which cuts through downtown. Afterward they can buy some fresh fruit and vegetables at the excellent Kalamazoo Farmers Market.
The homes you’ll find in Kalamazoo are typically modest one- and two-story properties on 1 to 5 acres. This provides homeowners with both the privacy and room to host rocking parties around the fire pit.
5. Tucson, AZ
Median home list price: $279,800
Downtown Tucson, AZ
benedek/iStock
While jogging through Tucson neighborhoods, runners pass territorial-style (Greek Revival and Gothic details added to pueblo-style buildings) and Spanish-style homes dotted with mesquite trees and cacti. There are the staggering views of the nearby mountains to take in.
And you can’t have the great outdoors without the wildlife.
“One home buyer [who moved here] from Chicago saw a bobcat in their yard one morning,” says John Harings, an associate broker at Excelsior Associates Real Estate in Tucson. You don’t see a lot of those in Chicago! That’s in addition to bats, rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters. Yep, Gila monsters.
Just west of the city is Saguaro National Park, which is full with giant saguaro cacti and a common spot where locals go to hike and mountain bike. Sentinel Peak Park, which has an “A” painted at its peak in honor of Tucson-based University of Arizona, is near downtown and another popular hiking go-to spot.
6. Columbus, OH
Median home list price: $250,000
Columbus, OH
styxclick/iStock
Columbus is a great place for folks who want to get outside—to drink craft beer or hear live music. In fact, there are free outdoor concerts every Sunday evening in about a half-dozen locations throughout the city.
And there are also walkable neighborhoods like Short North, which is lined with new restaurants and beer gardens and hosts the annual Columbus Pride Parade. This area has become Columbus’ ground zero for hipsters.
The state capital is the fastest-growing metro in the Buckeye State and has a booming housing market. In fact, Columbus scored the second spot on realtor.com’s hottest market list in June. Outdoor lovers in the Columbus metro who don’t want to live in downtown can head just north to suburban Delaware County, where two-story homes range from $199,000 to above $400,000.
7. Virginia Beach, VA
Median home list price: $285,100
Virginia Beach, VI
Richard Cummins/Getty Images
The 15 million people who visit here each year come for the beach, parasailing, and boating—something that folks who live in Virginia Beach get to enjoy year-round.
Of course the ocean is a big part of Virginia Beach’s culture. But there’s also a number of great parks just outside the city, including the cheerily-named Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, a 100,000-plus-acre marsh-filled park.
“I’ve seen a bald eagle at the swamp, and black snakes and herons. It’s quiet except for the sound of birds and frogs,” says Carol Norris, an owner of an ad agency in the region, who moved here two decades ago from Toronto. She came for the work, but fell in love with the outdoors. She frequently takes hikes and weekend kayaking trips in the wildlife refuge. “It has the name ‘Dismal,’ but it’s anything but dismal.”
Homes right on the water can easily go for north of $500,000—you gotta pay dearly for those ocean breezes. But buyers can get substantial price breaks if they buy a littler farther back from the beach in neighborhoods such as Ocean View and Northside, and still be close to the action. They’re within walking distance to the beach for under $250,000, including this three-bedroom Cape Cod priced at $199,900, with an outdoor shed that is great for storing all your beach toys. Most of them, anyway.
8. Winston-Salem, NC
Median home list price: $214,600
Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem.
BSPollard/iStock
Winston-Salem is a not-too-big, not-too-small North Carolina city that comes with a healthy dose of Southern charm, with homes to match (see this cute Craftsman bungalow for $259,900). Despite a population of nearly a quarter-million, the downtown is dotted with classic, three-bedroom bungalows with porches that make getting to know the neighbors easy. The best part? Buyers can still find them in good shape for under $200,000.
“There is a lot of outdoor entertaining here,” says Samuel Collins, a broker at Pro Realty Group in Winston-Salem. “It’s really got that great Southern tradition of spending quality time on the porch.”
Local hikers enjoy packing their coolers with sandwiches and beer and heading to Pilot Mountain State Park or Hanging Rock State Park—both around a 40-minute drive from the city. And in recent years, community members here have pushed to expand public greenway space for bikers and runners, including a 1.7-mile Long Branch Trail that opened in April.
9. Fayetteville, AR
Median home list price: $289,100
Located in the Ozarks’ Boston Mountains, Fayetteville is surrounded by pine and red oak trees that cover the range. As a result, homes in this college town are packed with mountain bikes, climbing gear, and hiking boots. Around 15 minutes from downtown is Mount Sequoyah Woods Trail, which has a mountain bike trail that loops through its wooded terrain.
What really brings the outdoorsy type here is the 1.2 million-acre Ozark National Forest, which starts around a half-hour drive south of downtown, highlighted by the 200-plus-mile Ozark Highlands Trail. Of the places that ranked in our top 10, Fayetteville had the highest concentration of campsites.
“[These days, buyers] don’t care about having a big backyard. They care about being near parks, walking trails, biking trails,” says Don McNaughton, a real estate broker at McNaughton Real Estate based in Fayetteville. Most of his clients are young singles, couples, and families purchasing their first homes. Buyers can snag three-bedroom, two-bathroom houses in new subdivisions starting around $175,000. Existing homes are a little cheaper, including this traditional-style one-story home priced at $143,000.
10. Louisville, KY
Median home list price: $250,000
Louisville, KY
Kirkikis/iStock
The Ohio River starts in Pittsburgh and moves south past Cincinnati, but only when it makes it to Louisville does it hit its widest point, topping 1 mile. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that recreational life here revolves around the river, including everything from grilling, to boating, to attending concerts at Louisville Waterfront Park.
When the Ohio River flooded this spring, causing around $4 million in damages, Tre Mills and friends grabbed their kayaks and headed down to the river. The 20-year-old operations manager wasn’t alone—he found 60 other kayakers who also didn’t let the high river water stop them from enjoying the outdoors. It’s that kind of place.
Home buyers can snag historical two-story homes near its walkable downtown for $125,000 to $350,000, including this renovated Smoketown home built in 1900 for $170,000. The two-story home is just a short walk to Louisville nightlife and shopping.
Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and lots of horse lovers. One go-to for horseback riding is the 35 miles of woodland trails in Jefferson Memorial Forest.
“We have a big camping and climbing community, too,” Mills says. “The outdoors are everything here.”

When she's not running along the Spokane River or camping with friends, she's hitting the slopes. Growing up, she'd visit Lake Tahoe where a day pass can cost over $200.

California has Redwood forests, cliff-lined beaches along the Pacific, and picturesque, vineyard-laced landscapes. But what ordinary humans can afford to buy homes in most of those achingly beautiful locales? That's where suburban, inland Bakersfield-about two hours north of Los Angeles-comes in.
Skeptical? Just hear us out.
It's all about proximity here.
And Bakersfield's own Kern River Parkway Trail, used by pedestrians and cyclists, runs along the Kern River for more than 20 miles.
“We have Buena Vista Lake that's only about 30 minutes outside of town. That's where a lot of people like to wakeboard and water-ski,” says William Gordon, a real estate agent at Gordon Team Realty in Bakersfield.

The Florida Panhandle is a hiker's paradise, where trailgoers will spot everything from coastal dune lakes to swamps packed with exotic wildlife.
Folks in Florida's capital appreciate the outdoors. One-story abodes in suburban communities with backyard patios and decks for their owners to relax on are common. They include this three-bedroom Craftsman with a screened porch and a fenced backyard for $229,900.
For those who want to take in the natural beauty of the Florida Panhandle (and don't mind heights), there is the Tracer Hot Air Balloons, a hot air balloon company that offers morning and afternoon rides in Tallahassee.
4. Kalamazoo, MI

Kalamazoo has the kind of outdoor fun and natural beauty that some might be surprised to find in a major Michigan city-and it's perfect for campers.
The homes you'll find in Kalamazoo are typically modest one- and two-story properties on 1 to 5 acres. This provides homeowners with both the privacy and room to host rocking parties around the fire pit.
5. Tucson, AZ

While jogging through Tucson neighborhoods, runners pass territorial-style (Greek Revival and Gothic details added to pueblo-style buildings) and Spanish-style homes dotted with mesquite trees and cacti. There are the staggering views of the nearby mountains to take in.
And you can't have the great outdoors without the wildlife.
“One home buyer [who moved here] from Chicago saw a bobcat in their yard one morning,” says John Harings, an associate broker at Excelsior Associates Real Estate in Tucson. You don't see a lot of those in Chicago! That's in addition to bats, rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters.

Columbus is a great place for folks who want to get outside-to drink craft beer or hear live music. In fact, there are free outdoor concerts every Sunday evening in about a half-dozen locations throughout the city.
And there are also walkable neighborhoods like Short North, which is lined with new restaurants and beer gardens and hosts the annual Columbus Pride Parade. This area has become Columbus' ground zero for hipsters.
The state capital is the fastest-growing metro in the Buckeye State and has a booming housing market. In fact, Columbus scored the second spot on realtor.com's hottest market list in June. Outdoor lovers in the Columbus metro who don't want to live in downtown can head just north to suburban Delaware County, where two-story homes range from $199,000 to above $400,000.
7. Virginia Beach, VA
Median home list price: $285,100

The 15 million people who visit here each year come for the beach, parasailing, and boating-something that folks who live in Virginia Beach get to enjoy year-round.
Of course the ocean is a big part of Virginia Beach's culture. But there's also a number of great parks just outside the city, including the cheerily-named Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, a 100,000-plus-acre marsh-filled park.
“I've seen a bald eagle at the swamp, and black snakes and herons. It's quiet except for the sound of birds and frogs,” says Carol Norris, an owner of an ad agency in the region, who moved here two decades ago from Toronto. She came for the work, but fell in love with the outdoors. She frequently takes hikes and weekend kayaking trips in the wildlife refuge. “It has the name 'Dismal,' but it's anything but dismal.”
Homes right on the water can easily go for north of $500,000-you gotta pay dearly for those ocean breezes. But buyers can get substantial price breaks if they buy a littler farther back from the beach in neighborhoods such as Ocean View and Northside, and still be close to the action. They're within walking distance to the beach for under $250,000, including this three-bedroom Cape Cod priced at $199,900, with an outdoor shed that is great for storing all your beach toys. Most of them, anyway.
8. Winston-Salem, NC
Median home list price: $214,600

Winston-Salem is a not-too-big, not-too-small North Carolina city that comes with a healthy dose of Southern charm, with homes to match (see this cute Craftsman bungalow for $259,900). Despite a population of nearly a quarter-million, the downtown is dotted with classic, three-bedroom bungalows with porches that make getting to know the neighbors easy. The best part? Buyers can still find them in good shape for under $200,000.
“There is a lot of outdoor entertaining here,” says Samuel Collins, a broker at Pro Realty Group in Winston-Salem. “It's really got that great Southern tradition of spending quality time on the porch.”
Local hikers enjoy packing their coolers with sandwiches and beer and heading to Pilot Mountain State Park or Hanging Rock State Park-both around a 40-minute drive from the city. And in recent years, community members here have pushed to expand public greenway space for bikers and runners, including a 1.7-mile Long Branch Trail that opened in April.
9. Fayetteville, AR
Median home list price: $289,100
Located in the Ozarks' Boston Mountains, Fayetteville is surrounded by pine and red oak trees that cover the range.
“[These days, buyers] don't care about having a big backyard.

The Ohio River starts in Pittsburgh and moves south past Cincinnati, but only when it makes it to Louisville does it hit its widest point, topping 1 mile. So it shouldn't surprise anyone that recreational life here revolves around the river, including everything from grilling, to boating, to attending concerts at Louisville Waterfront Park.
When the Ohio River flooded this spring, causing around $4 million in damages, Tre Mills and friends grabbed their kayaks and headed down to the river. The 20-year-old operations manager wasn't alone-he found 60 other kayakers who also didn't let the high river water stop them from enjoying the outdoors. It's that kind of place.
