Favorites of 2023: Just the List
This time of the year every music writer’s fancy turns to the ubiquitous quest for the best of/favorites of the year. We start with a list of albums and singles we played on YTAA at least three or four times. Then we consider what songs and records slipped into our consciousness and we spent more time simply thinking about that song, that album — those words. If there is a pattern to what we…

When the pandemic derailed Beth Bombara’s plans to tour, she took that time to concentrate on new music. It was then that she rediscovered a neglected guitar she had stored away, which became instrumental in her songwriting process. It was a classical guitar, “[which] means it looks like an acoustic guitar, but it has nylon strings and a nice warm tone,” she said. “It really feels like a different instrument in comparison to a steel string acoustic or an electric guitar.”
Bombara wrote many of the songs for her latest album “It All Goes Up” on this guitar. “I found myself going back to finger-style picking, rather than strumming with a pick like I do on a steel string acoustic guitar,” the singer-songwriter said. “I’m convinced the album would’ve gone in a different direction if I was writing on a different guitar. I was very happy to explore the new sound.”

Beth Bombara “Moment” It All Goes Up (08-04-2023) ”When the world sort of came ‘back’ after the pandemic, I wasn’t ready for it. I’d adjusted to this slower pace of life, which gave me space to examine my priorities and what really brings me joy. It’s a reminder to myself to live fully in the present, so that life becomes these poignant, meaningful moments that will carry us through the times…

Beth Bombara- EVERGREEN (SELF RELEASED)
Tumblr media
I hadn’t heard the name before but this is album #6 so it sounds like Beth Bombara has been on the scene for quite some time.  Based in St. Louis, Bombara traveled to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and hunkered down in a cabin to write the new record and the name of the cabin? Evergreen and thus she dubbed her new record. Not having heard any of her previous stuff I don’t have a lot to go on but n Evergreen the music straddles that line between rock/pop and with country flair here and there (ie: I hear a pedal steel on some of the tunes). Think of a female Petty or Springsteen, raspy vocals and with a real every person feel. Most of the songs were co-written by Bombara and her bassist, Kit Hamon (who I think has always been her right-hand man). First song “I Only Cry When I’m Alone” is a great opener and all about putting a mask on in your daily life while “Upside Down”  has some meaty guitar hooks (and Bombara’s passionate vocals) and the terrific “Anymore” is all about the big breakup (“I Didn’t Choose your game and I’m not gonna play anymore…”). There’s not much more to say, really. 10 songs, strong songwriting (only a few I didn’t like), good vocals and excellent playing. Give it a shot. www.bethbombara.com

Video of The Day: I Only Cry When I'm Alone - Beth Bombara
In a world where music often shies away from genuine emotional rawness, Beth Bombara’s “I Only Cry When I’m Alone” emerges as a breath of fresh air. With soul-stirring lyrics, an evocative voice, and a hauntingly beautiful melody, this track is a testament to the power of simplicity in songwriting. And from the first listen, you will be hooked. And hooked hard to this gem. We have been playing…

Beth Bombara It All Goes Up
Beth Bombara It All Goes Up Black Mesa It All Goes Up, the seventh album from rocking Americana singer, songwriter, and guitarist Beth Bombara, follows her 2019 acclaimed Evergreen, which unlike some her previous work, delivered hopeful themes.  This one is even brighter, as the songwriter reconnected with an old classical guitar during the pandemic and forced herself to find slivers of hope…
