MY SONG OF THE WEEK: “Night Garden” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/night-garden-featuring-mike-garson-beyondo I was playing cruise ship gigs and a bass line kept flowing out of me. Every time I played this groove, musicians would start jamming, people would start dancing… It turned into this psychedelic Cuban-jazzified pop song. Latin and Caribbean music is animated and easeful to me, rhythmically and harmonically, making me feel I’m moving with confidence no matter what’s going on in the world. My lyrics were inspired after reading an airline magazine article by Lee May, a journalist from Atlanta who was passionate about gardening. His wonderful words about “plant life that blooms at only night” left an impression. As to the lyrics, Donald Fagen says he chooses words because they suit the shape of his mouth and the lure of a melody—words flow and find their own meaning. That was my approach: Like winding tendrils, words and melody twined into “a song novelette” about a pair of lovers heading south of the border, on the lam because of an unspecified crime. 

 

The music bed was recorded in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Williamsport PA (final mix by Xavier Francis). It features the brilliant drum/trumpet/co-production work of Eric Biondo (a.k.a. Beyondo) + magnificent piano by Mike Garson, a composer-artist in his own right but also known as David Bowie’s longtime keyboardist.

Just a boy playing a game that knows love is not a game. And win or lose love should not be a game. And that is a hard day to endure. The boy that misses having family and friends that love him. Matador Records does not get the same reputation as, say, Creation Records. I mean, sure, I get the latter comparison might not be fair to both of them, yet Matador should be seen as one of the major independent labels. Of course, the problem might lie in the intense eclecticism of the label, since they can also house someone like Cold Cave in their discography. The project I mentioned would feel closer to Ghostly International, my proposal, yet the fact Cold Cave's Cherish The Light Years appeared in the same home that had The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in their arsenal does speak volumes of the ethos of the company. Moreover, Cold Cave's abrasiveness does fit some of the players that call Matador their place to stay, though they go into other genres.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE GARSON “Mike doesn’t just play the piano. He eats it.”—Chick Corea. Back in 1973, minds were blown when Mike’s piano solo ripped through the title track of David Bowie’s iconic album, ALADDIN SANE. Mike’s “passionate pyrotechnics” captured attention as much as any “guitar god miracle,” yet “with a mastery of theory that perked ears and lowered turned-up noses of many a classical purist.”  For over three decades since, he has continued to support Bowie--one of rock music’s most original auteurs, appearing on some of Bowie’s best-known albums: DIAMOND DOGS, YOUNG AMERICANS (with John Lennon) and OUTSIDE (with Brian Eno).

Bowie said of Mike: “He is exceptional…there are very, very few musicians, let alone pianists, who naturally understand the movement and free thinking necessary to hurl themselves into experimental or traditional areas of music, sometimes, ironically, at the same time. Mike does this with such enthusiasm that it makes my heart glad just to be in the same room with him.”

As a composer, Garson has written over 4300 pieces of music, with over half as classical works, and his music has been used in major films (SEVEN, STIGMATA, etc.). He is also considered to be a leading interpreter of George Gershwin and György Ligeti. By age 13, Garson was studying at the Julliard School of Music and later studied under keyboard legends Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock. Currently he directs the Celebrate Bowie tours, does solo concerts, and continues to collaborate with other artists.
