On this day:

On October 26, 1956, a monkey from the Philippines fell into the backyard of Faye Swanson of San Mateo, California. It was morning when she discovered the dead creature flopped by her clothesline, its impact having shattered the four-by-four-inch clothesline post. Police and the Civil Aviation Authority investigated. No planes had flown over the area where the primate fell. Where the animal came from remained undetermined.

In 1910 a three-pound, foot-long cylinder of white marble fell on farmland in Westerville, Ohio. In 1959, in a Missouri suburb, a heavy, eighteen-inch-long chain fell from the sky onto Wallace Baker's bulldozer; it scorched his work gloves with its heat when he tried to pick it up.

In 1962, in North Carolina, Grady Honeycutt was fishing on a five-acre lake when a luminous sphere, covered in spikes, drifted slowly through the sky, entering the water near his boat. By the time deputy sheriffs arrived, the object had disintegrated to a glob of "shiny wire." Four hours later, explosive-disarming divers searched for it, but the sphere had disappeared. Around that time, a similar sphere fell in Duncannon, Ireland. A baseball-sized object, glittering and spiked, plummeted down onto a hilltop, creating a hole three feet wide and eighteen inches deep.

In 1969, Punta Gorda, Florida, was pummelled with hundreds of golf balls falling from the sky. In 1984, in Lakewood, California, an unarmed, rusty bombshell from World War II whistled out of the sky, slamming through seventy-nine-year-old Fred Simons's deck. The twenty-two-pound shell was nine inches long and created a four-foot crater.

Yearly, for nearly one hundred years, in Bijori, India, tiny beads fall from the sky. They come in all colors, but are mostly blue and green. They are plentiful enough to scoop up by the handful.
