Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist updated every Tuesday.
Time for the yearly meeting of the Cate Le Bon Appreciation Society, on the occasion of the release date of the Welsh songwriter’s fifth album, “Reward”. The goddaughter of the 90s Welsh indie pop of Gruff Rhys et al has long outgrown her own scene, and her exquisite avant-pop reached a level of uniqueness that makes it impossible to lump her together with anyone at all. It’s yet another magnificent record from Le Bon and we’re thrilled to live in the same era as she’s making music.
In this week’s playlist: new tracks by Alex Lahey, Lydia Ainsworth, Carly Rae Jepsen, SAMIA, Stef Chura, Los Retros, Faye Webster, Okey Dokey, Night Beats, Amyl and The Sniffers, Institute, Black Mountain, Earth, Bill Callahan (smog), Mavis Staples, Dylan LeBlanc, Frankie Lee, Justin Townes Earle, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Doug Tuttle, and Los Coast.
Bolachas Now Playing, 20/2019 (#190):

1420. Smog - Wild Love (Domino - 2001/1995)
Une poignée de chansons, une boite à rythmes, une guitare, l’on commence à sentir tout le potentiel d’écriture de Bill Callahan, narrateur d’un quotidien pas si quotidien.

Wild Love, Smog (1995)
Wild Love was Bill Callahan’s first release that impressed beyond exploration of lo-fi textures and raw experimentation. It was here that he released some of the poetic knack for storytelling that persisted in future releases; stories full of tenderness and imagery, of anger and violence, personal torment and inner conflict. Not that Callahan hadn’t shown such traits before, only here they dominated - expressive and immersive and, often, exhaustingly so.
On Wild Love, the moments of awe are more frequent and protracted, moments of silliness (such as Julius Caesar’s ‘Your Wedding’ and ’37 Push Ups’) rare but, due to ‘Be Hit’ and ‘The Candle’, still persistent. Callahan’s lyrical leap was also matched by instrumental development - Jim O’Rourke on cello, Cynthia Dall on guitar and Drag City’s Rian Murphy on production all made for an expansion further from -but not totally beyond- lo-fi.
Despite a sizeable number again of vignette-style palette experiments, Wild Love’s compositions also moved far beyond any Smog record prior to it. ‘Bathysphere’ seems informed by Glass operas with its measured, minimal horns. ‘Wild Love’ has an avant-folk eeriness to its chamber music, contrasting with the more standard indie folk of ‘It’s Rough’. ‘Prince Alone in the Studio’ even ventured into the territory of lengthier tracks, complete with dramatic strings and psychedelic repetition. Quite a few of those remain some of Callahan’s finest tracks.
On Wild Love it was clear that appreciation for Smog had to be re-tuned from that of abstract lo-fi consistencies to proper songwriting. Though it wasn’t a total success, the brilliance of no small number of individual tracks makes this a worthwhile starting point for those looking to get into the more accessible works in Callahan’s career.
Pick: ‘Bathysphere’
