Music tag game!
Thank you for the tag @cooking-with-hailstones <3
Put your music library on shuffle, then list the first five songs that come up in a poll to let people vote for which one they like the most!
Wow, I realized how much music I never listen to is in my library. I cheated a bit and skipped over songs I haven’t actually listened to and don’t recognize.

TRIOS BACK TO BACK AT MEZZROW’S, 13 SEPTEMBER 2024
GLENN ZALESKI with Dezron Douglas and Adam Aruda, 9 pm set
CAELAN CARDELLO with Graham Kozar and Mike Piolet, 10:30 pm set
I tried to catch GLENN ZALESKI’s earlier set in real time, but it wasn’t coming up. I watched Miki Yamanaka with tenor Anthony Orji, Pablo Menares, and, as usual, Jimmy Macbride and there will be a forthcoming souvenir. This way I have the illusion of just sticking around at MEZZROW’s.
GLENN ZALESKI has a deserved two night run, but Dezron Douglas was only along Friday night. So I wanted to see him as he is now only occasionally playing here. He was into all sorts of supportive mischief, including just casually hitting overtones as he walked his bass lines but always finding ways to enhance the harmonies. And Zaleski’s harmonic approach is rich. He made me think of Brad Mehldau just a bit and not just for how he leaned into his head sideways to the keyboard. He was subtle and patient while still digging in big. He celebrated Kenny Kirkland (Yamanaka did too earlier in the week interestingly) and James Williams, tipping his hat to those lesser known heroes. The opener was a standard I should have recognized but I’m In The Mood for Love was definitely there. They caressed them as they deserved. The originals were a very sweet one for the pianist’s son and an earlier tune that had some finger twisting intricacy and drive. I think the rhythm section the last time I saw Zaleski was Bill Charlap’s team of Peter Washington and Kenny Washington. He deserves to play with them and Douglas and Adam Aruda.
CAELAN CARDELLO came to my attention through a duo date with Rufus Reid which led to finding a quartet date on YouTube from a New Jersey public library’s music series. He also accompanied singer April Varner on an in studio performance for WGTE’s Jazz Spectrum. I was not prepared for but pleasantly surprised by just how hard he cooked in this trio setting. He opened with a big modal rumble that turned riffy in a Horace Silver/Cedar Walton way. He honored Billy Taylor with his quieter blues Easy Walker, Phineas Newborn Jr honoring Count Basie (Mike Piolet and then Cardello had shots at being the whole big band, and his mentor Harold Mabern with another modal rumble. Autumn in New York was gentle amid all the role.
Cardello has some sideman gigs coming up, so I’ll keep watching him. But with Zaleski too, these trio sets will start getting priority.

Bill Charlap Trio
Notes From New York
Impulse, 2016
Bass - Peter Washington
Drums - Kenny Washington
Piano - Bill Charlap
It’s worth remembering that no artist is constantly obligated to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, just making a really great wheel can be an accomplishment in itself. And while no one would say Notes From New York, the new outing from the Bill Charlap Trio, represents a paradigm shift in the piano-trio canon, it’s an album of such instrumental invention and brio that it easily stands as the year’s most purely delightful recording thus far. Charlap’s piano technique is singular and stunning in the way it weds a chiming, almost dainty touch to a leaping, top-to-bottom keyboard attack. If “muscular elegance” is not too much of an oxymoron, it’s the perfect phrase to describe the pianist’s approach. His album-opening rendition of “I’ll Remember April” is a master class in fast-paced swing, drummer Kenny Washington’s staccato rhythms driving Charlap to ever-rising single-note explosions. “Tiny’s Tempo” bustles along with effortless flair, showcasing a bouncy solo from bassist Peter Washington, and Charlap lightly trips his way through “A Sleepin’ Bee”; there, Kenny Washington’s shuffling brushes provide an unwavering companion on the journey. But Charlap’s trio also brings considerable vitality and élan to Notes From New York’s moodier material. The pianist’s low-register block chords give “Make Me Rainbows” an admirable sense of ardor, with Peter Washington’s walking strings adding just enough blues to the mix. “There Is No Music” blends polished refinement with a somber, minor-keyed tenderness and darkly shimmering Charlap glissandos. The whole affair closes with “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” which Charlap, playing unaccompanied, reinvents as a bittersweet ballad full of longing and echoey empty spaces. But even when it’s tugging at your heartstrings, Notes From New York is a luxurious, exquisitely pleasurable experience. Charlap and his trio have given us a “wheel” that rolls on straight and true.

LIVESTREAM (and almost): NICOLE GLOVER with Tyrone Allen and Kayvon Gordon, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 29-30 DECEMBER 2023, 7:30 and 9 pm sets
I close out the year with one of my favorite players whom I make a point of seeing—this year as part of Bill Charlap’s Jazz in July 92NY series, at Jazz St Louis with Allison MIller, and at The Jazz Gallery in November as well as on the second Artemis album and on Aaron Diehl’s presentation of Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite—at every opportunity. It was at the Allison Miller gig that I first stayed over for the second set and began my habit of thanking musicians for what they do particularly on the streams.
So having NICOLE GLOVER’s ongoing growth with an equally smart, supple band is a treat. She made a big impression with the Wayne Shorter tribute Palladium and her subsequent late night Smoke gigs with a different trio were fierce and intense. Those players had two settings loud and louder and weren’t particularly subtle. Kayvon Gordon is quite subtle indeed deftly shading the rhythms and Tyrone Allen has a rich bass tone. Together they can whisper and roar. Glover can still pin one’s ears back ferociously and intensely, but she’s also able to develop lines, tonalities, and phrases with grace and breathing room.
This was certainly her first weekend run and probably her first regular (as opposed to late night) sets as a leader. Body and Soul both nights and Monk’s work on Friday were the only familiar standard covers. She/they know the 60s Blue Note and beyond post-bop repertoire so undoubtedly she draws on Joe Henderson, Clifford Jordan, Andrew Hill, and others. In any case, the tunes proceed at actually quite conversational levels—and they have the audience’s full attention. I recall a difficult late night gig where, even roaring, they couldn’t hear themselves.
I don’t have tune names on the whole, but there were some very welcome repeats and, in any case, a remarkable range of music.
I’m loathe to say that any musician, particularly a youngish woman, needs to be ingratiating to the audience. She has previously been reticent to talk, but made a point of introducing the band both at the start of each set and just at the end and dedicating each set to someone, probably a staunch fan and fixture on the scene who has evidently died. Further, she certainly likes her band and, as she was with me, shyly personable with fans. She’s smart, musically and in general, so it’s good to see her having fun. And it’s wonderful to be able to experience the fun they are creating.
