The rise of AI chatbots has been fast, with more options becoming available to users. These bots are becoming a regular part of the software and devices we use every day.

Just like choosing an email provider or music app, you can now pick your favorite AI chatbot too. We’ve tested three of the most popular ones to help you decide which might be right for you.

Aside from these, there are others like Perplexity and Claude, but our focus here is on the biggest names: OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot.

We’ve tested each bot and included three standard challenges for evaluation. We asked for "a fun game idea for a 5-year-old’s birthday party," "a new smartphone app concept," and "instructions for resetting macOS."

Which One Is Best for Regular Users? ChatGPT or Gemini or Copilot

Paying for Gemini gets you access to newer, smarter models. The interface resembles ChatGPT, and it integrates well with other Google services.

Gemini is suited for Google product users. It provided sensible responses to our challenges and suggested a neighborhood item-sharing app and a twist on the classic party game.

Copilot powered by Microsoft

Copilot is integrated into many Microsoft products like Bing and Windows. It’s available as a web app and mobile app.

Copilot uses Microsoft’s Bing search engine and often provides web links with citations. It's conversational and offers various text output settings.

The AI behind Copilot is OpenAI’s GPT-4, with different settings for text output: More Creative, More Balanced, and More Precise.

Copilot suggested "What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?" for the kids' game and a virtual interior design app for smartphones. Its macOS reset instructions were accurate and cited from Apple’s support site.

If you use Microsoft products heavily, Copilot is a natural choice. It excels at referencing web information and providing clear citations.

First off, I apologise to those who were hit by the 'serialisation' problems where certain importers were not saving correctly. I screwed up my import folder deduplication code last week; I had a test to make sure the deduplication transformation worked, but the test missed that some importers were not saving correctly afterwards. If you were hit by an import folder, subscription, or downloader page that would not save, this is now completely fixed. Nothing was damaged (it just could not save new work), and you do not have to do anything, so please just unpause anything that was paused and you should return to normal.

I hate having these errors, which are basically just a typo, so I have rejigged my testing regime to explicitly check for this with all my weekly changes. I hope it will not happen again, or at least not so stupidly. Let me know if you have any more trouble!

Relatedly, I went on a code-cleaning binge this week and hammered out a couple hundred 'linting' (code-checking) warnings, and found a handful of small true-positive problems in the mess. I've cleared out a whole haystack here, and I am determined to keep it clean, so future needles should stick out.

I moved around a bunch of the checkboxes in the options dialog. Stuff that was in the options->tags and options->search pages is separated into file search, tag editing, and tag autocomplete tabs. The drag and drop options are also overhauled and moved to a new options->exporting page.

I rewrote the main 'ListBook' widget that the options dialog uses (where you have a list on the left that chooses panels on the right). If you have many tag services and they do not fit with the normal tabbed notebook, then under the new options->tag editing, you can now set to convert all tag service dialogs to use a ListBook instead. Everything works the same, it is just a different shape of widget.

A page that has no files selected now only uses the first n files (default 4096) to compute its 'selection tags' list when there are no files selected. This saves a bunch of update CPU time on big pages, particularly if you are looking at a big importer page that is continuously adding new files. You can change the n, including removing it entirely, under options->tag presentation.

If you are an advanced downloader maker, 'subsidiary page parsers' are now import/export/duplicate-able under the parsing UI.

Apple is creating a generative AI version of Siri

According to insider sources, Apple is developing a new generation of generative AI experiences for their software lineup. The software engineering team has big plans to release major changes to Xcode, Keynote, Siri, Apple Music, and its own LLM Ajax, called “Apple GPT,” early next year.

In order to handle AI, Apple’s senior vice presidents in charge of AI are thinking about using a hybrid deployment strategy in the upcoming iOS version, combining cloud-based infrastructure with on-device hardware acceleration.

Naturally, the most exciting development for most fans is the confirmation of an AI-powered Siri. As of right now, Siri incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), however there is still a lot of ambiguity about it. At its core, Apple’s mobile assistant is an information recall (IR) system rather than an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot like ChatGPT.

While the latter creates original language that may not have been previously, the former uses web crawling to gather the most pertinent pre-existing information. Artificial intelligence is not generating; instead, it may be used to accelerate the crawling process or improve the relevance of material that is recalled. While generative AI, by definition, creates an output (generate and remember are not synonymous), this addresses the issue of data processing.

What therefore is to be expected from a fully creative AI Siri? Finally, the voice assistant will be able to respond in real time, just like everyone’s favourite AI chatbot, ChatGPT from OpenAI. In fact, it has been claimed that the LLM (long language model) being created for this reason is internally known as Apple GPT!

The generative AI movement is led by Apple executives Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering, and John Giannandrea, SVP of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. Eddy Cue, SVP of Services, has joined the senior vice presidents, who directly report to Apple CEO Tim Cook, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The tech giant allegedly views the sudden AI frenzy plaguing the market as a “pretty big miss,” which has caused Federighi’s team “a lot of anxiety.”

Xcode for Mac and Ajax

Apple is hard at work on developing Ajax, a huge language model, in addition to a more intelligent version of Siri. All of the natural language processing (NLP) functions that we have fast come to anticipate from rivals ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and Google Bard will be able to be performed by the AI model.

Mac users are embracing AI apps, study finds, with 42% using AI apps daily

AI adoption among Mac app users is booming, according to a new report from app subscription service Setapp that found that 42% of Mac users today report using AI-based apps on a daily basis, and 63% claim to believe that AI apps are more beneficial than those without AI. In addition, Mac app developers are embracing AI, with 44% having already implemented either AI or machine learning models in their apps while another 28% say they’re working on doing so.

The survey is part of an annual report on the state of Mac apps put out by the company, whose business involves a subscription service that provides access to more than 230 Mac apps. This year, its survey included responses from 1,241 Mac users, mostly in the U.S., so it does not necessarily provide insights into the adoption of AI-based apps on a more global basis. However, the report highlights the interest in AI apps among this portion of the Mac user base, noting that top AI apps included those that aren’t only native to macOS — like Google’s AI Bard and Bing, which integrated AI technology from OpenAI.

In addition, other top AI apps users mentioned using include TypingMind, Elephas, Spark, Notion, Grammarly, Craft, Luminar Neo, MacGPT, Asana, Raycast and MacWhisper. Some of these leverage AI to augment their existing apps, as opposed to being an app that’s solely focused on interacting with AI.

“We see how AI is transforming the app’s usage experience by providing additional user assistance,” said Mykola Savin, product lead of Setapp, in an announcement. “At Setapp, we also witness a great adoption of AI tools and the features we implement on the platform. Maybe not everyone succeeds with AI on the first try. But when they do, they tend to use those features repeatedly.”

This is the first year Setapp has asked in its annual survey about AI app adoption, so it’s not possible to quantify how many more Mac users are now using AI apps daily, compared with years past. But AI apps’ slice of users’ daily workflows is significant, it seems. Out of an average of 51 installed apps on their Mac, users access up to 15 daily. And as 42% say they’re using AI apps daily, that means AI is now a large part of users’ daily workflows.

Other often-used apps include browser apps, Microsoft and Google Office tools (both of which are integrating AI technologies, as well), and Adobe software — the latter which has embraced generative AI across a range of apps, including Photoshop, and other Creative Cloud apps. So users’ true exposure to AI-powered apps may be even higher.

The survey also reports on other general findings about Mac app adoption and discovery, noting that subscriptions are more popular than one-time purchases, and the top means of app discovery include the Mac App store, YouTube and social media. In addition, 70% of the survey respondents report having a Mac with either an M1 or M2 chip, among other highlights.

New enterprise features coming to new Edge browser. Internet Explorer mode One of the features available for evaluation is Internet Explorer mode, a feature that integrates IE11 natively into Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer mode allows users to navigate seamlessly from a modern web application to one that requires legacy HTML or plugins. You’ll no longer need a “two-browser” solution. We know that most of our customers are using IE11 in their environments. One thing that our customers made clear to us is that their web apps that rely on IE11 tend to be critical to many of their business processes. The apps work well and don’t change, which allows customers to focus their IT resources on other problem areas. Any solution we provide would need to just work with their sites. The team designed Internet Explorer mode to meet that need, with a goal of 100% compatibility with sites that work today in IE11, including full support for IE’s doc modes, as well as ActiveX controls, like Silverlight and Browser Helper Objects (BHOs). In addition, Internet Explorer mode appears visually like it’s just a part of the next Microsoft Edge, providing users with the latest UI features, like a smarter address bar and new tab page, and greater privacy controls for the modern web. By leveraging the Enterprise mode site list that many customers have already built and deployed to support the two-browser solution, IT professionals can enable users of the next Microsoft Edge to simply navigate to IE11-dependent sites and they will just work. Navigating back to a modern site will be seamless. No need for a separate window or tab. Simple to deploy and manage Another goal of ours is to make Microsoft Edge the easiest browser deployment decision customers have ever made. This is true particularly if you have existing investments in Microsoft 365 and Microsoft technologies, but we are also deeply committed to making sure that Microsoft Edge works well with first- and third-party management tools. The next version of Microsoft Edge supports a range of Group Policies, allowing customers to configure every aspect of the deployment and product experience. We will also support Mobile Device Management (MDM) deployments on Windows 10 (via Microsoft Intune or third-party products), as well as popular deployment and management tools on Mac OS. Customers will be able to control the flow of updates, either by leveraging our general updating mechanisms and using policies to pause updates at a particular version while testing compatibility with a small set of pilot users, or by using the provided offline installers (MSIs and PKGs) to push updates directly to their managed devices on their own schedule. For those customers using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or Microsoft Intune, we’re working to make the deployment and configuration experience as easy as possible. We will also work with third parties, ensuring that deploying and configuring Microsoft Edge is a great experience with those tools as well. Keeping customers and data protected Customers tell us that their users spend 60% or more of their time on a desktop or laptop PC in a browser, making the security of the browser critical to the integrity of the organizational environment and data. In addition to fundamental security features that are derived from Chromium (e.g. sandboxing and site isolation), our teams are working with the Chromium Security teams to help improve the core security of all Chromium-based browsers on Windows. We’re also engineering our update systems to ensure that we can respond to vulnerabilities and get fixes out to customers as quickly as possible. The current version of Microsoft Edge has a number of security innovations that we intend to bring forward to the next version of Microsoft Edge. This includes integrating our industry-leading Microsoft Defender SmartScreen technology into the next browser on all our supported platforms, in order to help protect users from phishing, malware, and scams. We’ve heard from administrators and individuals within organizations that we have an opportunity with Microsoft Edge to make daily activities easier and empower people to get more done. Balancing compliance and access to information shouldn’t be a tradeoff. Microsoft Edge natively supports signing into the browser with Azure Active Directory (AAD) work or school accounts. This means users’ favorites and other browser data can be synced securely between devices, including Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices, while respecting your organization’s compliance requirements. Also, once signed-in to the browser, Single Sign-on ensures that access to corporate sites will just work. Searching for information is, of course, one of the top activities that people do in a browser, and perhaps the need is even higher for finding information within the corporate network. By combining the next Microsoft Edge with the power of the Microsoft Graph, we’re investing to bring your organization’s information to your users’ fingertips. Every time a user opens a new tab or starts a new task, they see the new tab page (NTP). In the next version of Microsoft Edge, an Enterprise-focused NTP will be available to empower people with fast access to what they need. Users will see the corporate web apps, documents, and sites they use most, as well as recommended content from Office 365. Whether it’s highlighting the document they were collaborating on with a colleague or making them aware of important company-wide communications, the NTP dynamically brings information that’s relevant to each person. 　Open Neural Network Exchange（ONNX）は、Microsoftが米Facebookと共同開発した深層学習や機械学習のためのオープンなモデルフォーマット。AIモデルの相互運用性のためのエコシステムを目指している。AI開発者はこれを利用してツール間でモデルを容易に共用でき、あるフレームワークでトレーニングしたモデルを別のフレームワークで利用するといったことが可能になる。

　ONNX RuntimeはONNXに対応した推論エンジンで、CPUおよびGPU（CUDA）を利用して処理を実行できる。プログラミングインターフェイスとしてはPythonおよびC、C#をサポートする。ONNX Runtimeをコードに直接組み込んで利用するほか、「Azure Machine Learning」を使ってサービスを実装して使うこともできる。

　Microsoft社内では「Bing Search」「Bing Ads」などのシナリオで用いるモデルの改善に利用しているという。

　対応フォーマットはONNX 1.2以上、およびONNX-MLプロファイル。継続して最新のONNX標準が使えるようにアップデートするため、最新の機能を活用できるとしている。

We’re improving collaboration capabilities between Outlook and Teams, making it easy to send an email thread to a Teams channel for further discussion.

And we’re bringing the Yammer app into Teams, adding the ability for users to pin the app to the left-hand rail and making Teams the hub for both focused team collaboration and broad, open communities. We are also delivering new industry-tailored innovations and experiences including tools for Healthcare and Firstline workers. Healthcare providers can now schedule and conduct B2C virtual consultations through Teams with new Virtual Consults capabilities, and new features like SMS Sign-In and Global Sign-Out make it quick and easy for Firstline workers to securely access Teams from their mobile devices.

The New Office.com/setup Edge

Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Bing are the web browser and search engines for business. We are pleased to announce that the general availability of the all-new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser is targeted for January 15, 2020. You can download the release candidate today.

The all-new Office.com/setup Edge offers the enterprise a new tab page, where you’ll have direct access to your Office.com/setup 365 files, sites, and intranet search, making every tab you open a portal to productivity. And with the new Microsoft Search in Bing integration, searching for information at work is as easy as searching the web. 2015年，Microsoft Edge瀏覽器以Internet Explorer替代者的身份隨Windows 10系統一起發布。儘管當時IE瀏覽器在企業市場依然被廣泛使用，但是在消費領域早已被打上了“速度緩慢”、“渲染效果不佳”等的標籤，更多用戶傾向於Chrome和Firefox等第三方瀏覽器。

最初Microsoft Edge基於自己研發的EdgeHTML引擎上，不過近期微軟決定轉投Chromium，目前已經提供Canary和Dev兩個通道，而在前幾天Beta通道版本也可以通過官方服務器進行下載

Microsoft Search

Microsoft Search推出已經有一段時間了，它主要為用戶提供統一的網絡和本地搜索體驗。微軟已經宣布Microsoft Search將於2019年5月28日正式發布。在改進資源管理員之後，用戶將會在傳統索引結果中加入來自用戶OneDrive在���內容。微軟會先面向少數用戶開放這項功能，但是會逐漸向更多Insider成員開放。

The best tech for working from home

With a changing economy, more flexible job roles, and the continued spread of broadband internet, more and more of us are working from home. According to the most recent statistics, more than five percent of the U.S. workforce spends at least part of their office hours at home.

While this habit lets us avoid the stress of commuting and spend all day in sweatpants, the consequences aren’t all positive. With so many distractions at home, and no manager looming nearby, productivity can take a hit. To avoid this, we rounded up some apps and tools to help you stay on task. Include some of these in your home office setup to raise your productivity and motivation levels.

If you work best with a constant murmur in the background, you’ll find plenty of white-noise apps to provide that hum. We’ve selected two reasonably-priced favorites.

Noisli ($2 for Android and iOS, free for the web app) is our top pick. It produces a wide variety of sounds—from morning coffee-shop clatter to a stormy forest to simple white noise—that you can combine and customize. Pick the noises you want to hear, and the relative volumes you’d like them to play at, and Noisli does the rest. For instance, you might choose a loud whoosh of blowing leaves with just a faint hint of rain in the background. The app also offers several preset sounscapes designed to help with relaxation or productivity.

On the more expensive side, we also like Brain.fm ($7 per month or $47 per year for Android, iOS, and the web). Although it’s pricier and less customizable than Noisli, it still offers a decent number of sounds, from nature noises to electro. And Brain.fm claims that its original AI-created tracks can actually optimize your brainwaves to improve your cognitive function, helping you focus, relax, or drift off to sleep. Your mileage may vary, but I found the app to be very effective when I tested it out. If you’re still leery, you get five free sessions to test out Brain.fm before you commit to paying.

Where does all the time go? With no boss around to check when you start work or take a break (or three), your routine can quickly stagnate. That’s why you need an app to help you keep track of how you’re spending your time.

One of the most impressive time-tracking apps we’ve encountered is Toggl (free for Android, iOS, and the web, with premium subscriptions for $7 to $20 per month). It syncs across multiple devices, produces useful reports analyzing your schedule, and lets freelancers see which clients help them make the most money. What really makes Toggl stand out, though, is its ease of use. You can set it up in minutes, tracking your time with just a few taps or clicks. If you forget to note particular tasks when you start them, you can return later to edit this information. Many of these features come free, but for bonuses like advanced reports and automated reminders, you’ll need to pay for a premium subscription.

Although it’s our favorite, Toggl isn’t the only good time-tracking app out there. We also like Hours (free for iOS, $8 per month for web access). Unfortunately, this intuitive and comprehensive time-tracker only has a free version for iOS. Web access requires a premium subscription, which also gives you extra features like more reporting options and syncing across multiple devices.

At home, you’re surrounded by temptations like your snack-filled kitchen, potential Netflix binges, and, of course, the ever-present siren song of your smartphone. You need help tuning out these distractions in order to stay on track.

First, we’d like to flag Forest (free with in-app purchases for Android, $2 for iOS), which aims to keep you off your smartphone. It relies on a simple but effective motivation: The longer you avoid your device, the bigger the app’s digital forest grows. As virtual trees multiply, Forest rewards you with coins that you can spend to support the planting of real trees. This not only reduces your phone use, but also helps the planet at the same time.

For a more comprehensive method of avoiding distractions, we like Freedom ($7 per month or $30 per year for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS). It actively prevents you from accessing pre-selected websites and apps, such as distracting social media or smartphone games. In other words, it locks you out of non-work programs until you’ve finished your tasks. Unfortunately, if you’re determined to do so, you can simply disable Freedom and cheat. But you might find that it creates enough of a barrier to derail your proposed Facebook binge and encourage you to do something productive instead.

All work and no play is a recipe for burnout: If you don’t take the odd breather, your productivity will experience diminishing returns. A simple tool like the free online Pomodoro Tracker builds breaks into your schedule. It reminds you to take five minutes of rest for every 25 minutes of work, and you can also adjust these parameters to split your time differently.

You should use those break minutes to refresh your brain. The highly-rated meditation app Headspace ($8 to $13 per month for Android, iOS, and the web) can help you be more intentional about downtime. It takes you carefully through a host of beginner-friendly guided meditations, from short single sessions to longer courses. You can pick the topics that suit your needs, such as relieving stress or increasing focus, and the time periods that fit into your schedule. You get a limited number of basic meditations for free, and then if those work for you, you can pay for a subscription to unlock the entire Headspace library.

If you’d prefer distraction to meditation, why not rest your eyes while listening to a podcast? Google Podcasts (free for Android) and Apple Podcasts (free for iOS) both give you free access to a wealth of audio content. Learning about completely non-work-related topics—podcasts cover everything from life hacks to television shows—will give you a chance to rest and reset, so you can tackle your tasks afresh when you head back into the home office.

Even when you’re not in the office, you need to stay in touch with your colleagues. So apps that connect you with other members of your team are an essential part of working from home.

For your audio and video calls, we recommend Skype (free for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS). This classic web caller works efficiently and intuitively, and it also boasts lots of useful features like text chat, group video calls, screen sharing, and file transfers. Because Microsoft owns it, the app integrates neatly with other Microsoft services—for example, you can access Skype directly from the Outlook web portal.

And for more granular communications, you can’t beat the ubiquitous chat app Slack (free or $7 to $13 per month for Android, iOS, the web, Windows, and macOS), which aims to reduce our reliance on email. It has gained widespread popularity for its ease of use, ability to switch seamlessly between private direct messaging and open chat rooms, and integration with other work services like Google Docs and Trello. It can even make audio calls. However, for it to function as your virtual office, you’ll have to convince your organization to sign up the whole team for accounts. Although you can get Slack’s basic chat features for free, you’ll have to pay $7 to $12.50 a month for access to the entire message archive, unlimited searches, and other premium features.

Besides the apps we’ve mentioned, you can also modify your physical home-office setup. A more comfortable working situation will make you more productive—and less vulnerable to distractions.

For your comfort and your health, you should make sure your chair and desk help you sit without straining your body. For example, keep your screen at eye level to avoid damaging your neck and back. No matter what type of computer you own, a basic stand like the SimpleHouseware Metal Desk Monitor Stand ($21 on Amazon) can help keep everything in alignment. And for a real upgrade, consider building a custom computer desk designed to help you sit ergonomically.

In addition to your computer, you probably have a few other gadgets on that desk. You’ll want to keep them all charged to make sure a dead battery doesn’t make you miss a call from the boss. A multi-port charger like the Anker 60W USB Wall Charger ($26 on Amazon) can help. It lets you juice up to six devices at once using the ubiquitous USB port standard.

Finally, illuminating your workspace is essential for both staying focused and reducing strain on your eyes. You can pick any lamp that fits your tastes and needs, but we like the Lampat LED Desk Lamp ($30 on Amazon) because it’s not too expensive, and it comes with yet another USB charging port.
