Discovering Lit Through Fic: A Rec List
Tumblr media
Created for the Pedro Pascal Fandom Bingo Game from @burntheedges! The challenge was to create a rec list of 3+ fics for a single trope or theme.
It's always fun to find mention of a book, poem, or other literary work that you love in fic, and I also enjoy how such inclusions can lead to finding new things to read!
A bit of a tangent, but there's a fic that I've very frustratingly never been able to re-find in a different fandom that I still will never be able to forget because I have two books on my shelves because of it! Funny how things can stay with us even as they disappear.
This list brings together works that I have encountered in the PPCU fandom that have somehow incorporated mentions of published literature (including poetry, prose, and one play so far!). Some integrations are more central to their tale while others are a passing mention, but each is a fun little easter egg that adds a unique dimension to the characters and stories at hand.
Alpha sorted by character then by author. I will update as I find more!

Visiting - @ladamedusoif - chaptered (ongoing) Works featured*: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy; Spielberg, Truffaut and Me: An Actor's Diary by Bob Balaban *I've only just started reading this one today (haven't even gotten a comment off, but I promise I will soon, Rose, sorry to jump the gun and do this first!), but I'm pretty sure there will be more references given that Ben is a lit prof. I'll come back and add once I'm aware of them.

The Plan so far
So, this blog was a very spontaneous idea I had yesterday (very late in the evening). So I took some time to think it through today, as well as get some more lists from other Fanders.
The plan now is to first create lists for the separate facets of the Thomas Sanders fandom, i.e. Sanders Sides, Shorts Characters, Cartoon Therapy and Roleslaying with Roman. (I'm sorry that this means I need to split up Remy and Emile for now, we'll get to crossovers later.)
For that to work, I need a comprehensive list of characters first. So this is my call for your help! I'll put a list of who I got so far after the cut and you can reply to this post or send me an ask about more characters I can/should include!
I'm really happy with the positive reactions I got for creating this blog, thank you for your support! 💗💙💖💙💜💛💚
Sanders Sides:
Patton
Roman
Logan
Virgil
Janus
Remus
Orange
Thomas
Nico
King
Dragon Witch (unsure if I should include her but if I do, this is where she'll be)
I know King is most commonly used as a sort of fusion of Roman and Remus but for the purposes of this list, I will see him as an entirely separate character and as such include ships between him and Roman and/or Remus.
Shorts Characters
Remy - Sleep
Teal/Teagan - Teacher
Dayd - Dad
Pryce - Prince
Andy - Anxiety
Dice/Anton/Cedric - The Critic
Linda - Thomas' Cowlick
Missy - Misleading Compliments
Nathan - Crimefighter Dude
Detective Sanders (from this series which I found through this post by @loganslowdown4!)
Percy/Magenta - Printer
Harley/Hart - Heart
Immy - Immune System
Brian - Brain
Dean - Denial
Sabina - Spam Bot
Ishmael - Ice Machine
Jasper - GPS
Scot - Scam Likely
Wieland - WIP
Phaelan - Phone
Fane - Fan
Steven - Electric Stapler
Ace - Action Hero that can't catch things
Rian - Rain
Mike - Microwave
Nessy - Illness
Apollo - Sun
Jericho - Moon
Taz / Tucker - Task
Bouce/Boucy - The Bouncing Ball
Anton - Antagonist
Pranks - Disney/Pokémon Pranks
Asher/Rudolph - Christmas
Jasper - Thanksgiving
Months
Jaana - January
Fabian - Feburary
Mara - March
April - April
May - May
Junie - June
Julia/Julian - July
Augusta/Augustus - August
Seth/Ember - September
Toby - October
Nove - November
Demetri/Odessa - December
Zodiacs
Ariel/Ari - Aries
Leona/Leonard/Leo - Leo
Candace/Candy - Cancer
Phillipa/Pip/Pippy - Pisces
Schuyler/Sky - Scorpio
Tara - Taurus
Sarah/Sally - Sagittarius
Caprice - Capricorn
Gemma - Gemini
Virginia/Ginny - Virgo
Liberty/Libby - Libra
Quinn - Aquarius
Cartoon Therapy (as far as I know, all the characters in this series are adults)
Emile Picani
Elliot
Mitchel (I don't actually know if that's how you spell his name)
Dot
Larry
Sloane
Corbin
Kai
Lauren
Sam
Roleslaying with Roman
Roman of Reston
Youngblood
Noise
??? (Mike)
Flow
Britney
Djembe
Bob Normie
Criss
Cross
Mother
Bard King
Ryker
There are many more characters in the series of course, but I do not know which it makes sense to include here, so please let me know! Also if there is another part of the fandom I forgot to include entirely.

How many OCs do you have? Any favourites?
a lot!!! a lot. so many. our main and favourite project is called Indie, which we've been developing for.. six years now, off and on but mostly on. it started out as an experiment in creating unique and interesting characters in a realistic fiction setting, as well as playing with character relationships. basically, we're filling out a fictional university in Florida with characters. Walton Hall is a dorm with the bulk of the characters. it has roughly 80 people in it. there's also Stotsky Hall, which we're working to fill out {though most in there are very underdeveloped}, a handful in Ford Hall, a couple of family members and coworkers, and then a gang that i don't remember why we added but hey! it's there now!
our favourites are definitely Phyllis Smith, Martin Smith, Zachary Seth, and Opal Jeanne. they're by far the most developed out of all of them, and the main characters for the WIP we have in this project. they're not our only faves though!! beware, old art incoming
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a reference sheet for a character named Evelyn Bangarden. she's a Vietnamese woman with tan skin, brown eyes, a gray bob, and a mole under her lip. there's a drawing of her standing with her arms in front of her stomach, and she's wearing cargo pants and a shirt that says, "You had me at pizza". a headshot of her in the bottom left corner shows her with brown roots in her hair and a pair of round glasses. text above the fullbody reads "Evelyn Bangarden", and next to her is "5'". other text on the image reads, "she/her, Vietnamese, 20, bisexual, Walton room C3, Education major, long eyelashes, mole under lip, cheesy shirts, cargo shorts, optional roots showing, optional glasses". end ID]
Evelyn's a very fun, cheerful character to play around with!! she's hoping to become an elementary teacher, she has a succulent collection, she's very in love with her boyfriend Daniel Wieland, and she's figuring out that she's asexual. she's roommates and friends with Ingrid Elkins
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a reference sheet for a character named Ingrid Elkins. she's a Black woman with dark brown skin, dark blue hair in a bun, and blue eyes. to the right is a fullbody piece of her with her hands in her pockets and her tongue out. she's wearing a ribbed gray tank top, a baggy pair of jeans with gold astronomical art on one leg, a chunky brown belt, and tie-dye flip flops. on the bottom left is a drawing of her face, showing she has a silver eyebrow piercings, small earrings, and a tongue stud. text on the reference sheet reads, "Ingrid Elkins. she/her. Walton room C3, forensic science major, RA for her floor, bisexual, 22, piercings, always has her tongue out, not thin, 6'2"". end ID]
please, please ignore the old ref. we've had a long art block, most of our OCs have really bad refs that we've needed to redo for some time now. i don't know why she always has her tongue out, we made her when we were like, 12, and we're too attached to her now. if we redesign her we will never stop thinking of her current design
she also needs a lot more development. she's Opal's best friend, she's Evelyn's friend and roommate. she runs a studyblr, she's very generous and helpful to people, she likes writing but isn't great at dialogue, she's a morning person, and the ref is wrong. her degree isn't in forensic science, it's marine biology. we changed it
the exhaustion is Fucking Hitting Us:tm: so i'm just gonna post more refs and hope you appreciate our OCs even without a proper explanation of who they are

“Bob Otis has been joining Wieland on the west side of San Juan Island for many of those watches. A quiet spoken, semi-retired college professor from wisconsin, Otis man's the whale watching operations inside the Lime Kiln State Park lighthouse, where a number of students and volunteers each summer monitor the comings and goings of Southern residents and other whales who happen past. The monitoring work includes listening in on the hydrophones that are plugged in off the rocky shore of the lighthouse.
Otis began this work in the 1990s as part of his work as an animal psychologist. But after a while, he says, it just became an old-fashioned passion: ‘Certainly when I started I came with all the baggage that a scientist brings in terms of quantification and objectivity. That has changed somewhat,’ he says. ‘Today when I teach a course on the killer whale, back in Wisconsin, I bring the students here,’ he says. ‘I want them to be able and willing to look at the killer whale through the eyes of a poet, a musician, an artist, as well as a scientist. I encourage my students to dabble in the arts, because it makes them much better scientists."

Did you know...
Did you know…
Did you know… … that today is Slowest Marathon in History Day? In 1986, Vietnam veteran Bob Wieland finally crossed the finish line of the New York Marathon, just 4 days, 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 17 seconds after beginning. His was the slowest time ever for a marathon. He was also the first person to run a marathon without legs. Over his lifetime Bob has finished many marathons, often taking…

Trump’s Fourth of July celebration thrills supporters, angers opponents
By Peter Jamison, Samantha Schmidt, Hannah Natanson and Steve Hendrix | Published July 04 at 7:45 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted July 4, 2019 |
Americans gathered in Washington on Thursday as one nation, feeling a little divisible, struggling to maintain unity on the Fourth of July, a summer ritual that normally brings a day-long pause to partisan hostilities. But that was before President Trump updated the day with his unique stamp — speaking of “one people chasing one dream and one magnificent destiny” from a Lincoln Memorial flanked by armored vehicles, with military jets passing overhead — his presence thrilling supporters, angering opponents and creating near-parallel celebrations of the country’s 243rd birthday.
On a sweltering, storm-tossed day, crowds were pulled in opposite directions on a polarized Mall, with “Make America Great Again” caps bedecking the throngs near the Lincoln Memorial and Baby Trump balloons bobbing in protest amid the masses gathered near the U.S. Capitol. There were even two separate fireworks shows, along with plenty of rhetorical firecrackers being tossed where the two sides mixed.
Near the World War II Memorial, midway along the Mall, a man with a sign reading “Facts matter” handed out free pocket Constitutions, and another held a sign with the words “No tanks on our streets. Not on our day.”
They were interrupted by a man who stormed up to the group, cursing and calling a massive inflated Baby Trump nearby “anti-American.” He threatened to destroy it, shouting, “Go, Trump!”
But the ties that unify the union were also on display. A 75-year-old volunteer with the Code Pink activist group managed to appease the man, who said he was an Army veteran who didn’t want the president disrespected.
“I understand,” said the volunteer, Paki Wieland, who wore a pink shirt, a white scarf around her neck and earrings with doves and peace signs. “Everything has polarized in this country.”
By the end, the man shook Wieland’s hand and thanked her for listening but also threatened to return with a bullhorn.
The celebration began as it typically does, with thousands streaming out of Metro stations and lining Constitution Avenue to watch a parade of fife and drum bands, Boy Scout troops and Miss District of Columbia. Amid heat warnings from the U.S. Park Police, the crowds migrated with their sunblock and water bottles and miniature flags to the Mall. The “Capitol Fourth” fireworks show and National Symphony Orchestra concert is a summer ritual for many who live within driving distance and a yearly broadcast on PBS.
But those who had heard about Trump’s speech began anticipating something different.
“This is going to electrify the whole day,” said Paco Sanchez, 45, an Illinois resident attending the celebration with his wife, Nancy Sanchez. “This probably won’t happen again, so we just wanted to experience it, experience history.”
Trump’s event, called “A Salute to America,” was modeled on a Bastille Day celebration with military trappings that captured the president’s imagination in 2017. Air Force One flew over the Mall as Trump approached the podium, protected by rain-streaked bulletproof glass.
The Sanchezes, both “gung-ho” Trump supporters retired from the U.S. Air Force, said it was their first time in the nation’s capital for the Fourth. Nancy Sanchez compared Trump’s appearance to the 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr. from the same marble steps.
“When Martin Luther King Jr. had his speech, people look back on that and say, ‘I was there for it,’” Nancy Sanchez said. “We want to witness this part of history being built.”
Others faulted the president for injecting himself into a day that is usually immune from controversy and politics.
“He’s kidnapped our holiday, and it’s not right, said Deb McKern, who lives on Capitol Hill and had looked forward to Independence Day in Washington after more than a decade working abroad for the Library of Congress. McKern considered skipping the festivities when she learned of Trump’s involvement but ultimately decided to show up and protest.
The military might was gathered mostly near the Lincoln Memorial, with two Bradley Fighting Vehicles parked inside the chain-link VIP enclosure accessible only to those who had acquired VIP tickets from the White House and the Republican Party. But green and camouflage-covered trucks blocked key intersections, part of a D.C. National Guard deployment of 800 members that was roughly triple the number of those in years past. Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Michael R. Odle said the extended nature of the event and additional activities prompted the increase.
Scattered protests took place throughout the day. A flag-burning in front of the White House led to two arrests and a brief skirmish with onlookers, according to the Secret Service. The “Baby Trump” balloon — featuring a scowling caricature of the president in a diaper — was visible much of the day until it was taken down late in the afternoon because of high winds.
Rain and lightning swept over the Mall more than once, causing many to take cover just before 4 p.m. Officials ordered an area near the Capitol temporarily evacuated about 90 minutes later. But the weather cleared enough for a series of flyovers by aircraft from each branch of the military, from Coast Guard helicopters to the Air Force’s B-2 stealth bomber and F-22 Raptors.
At the Lincoln Memorial, families in wearing ponchos and MAGA hats chanted “USA! USA!” as the marble image of the nation’s 16th president loomed over the scene. They cheered the air show over the monuments, and the current president who narrated each sortie with snippets of military history.
“Today, just as it did 243 years ago, the future of American freedom rests on the shoulders of men and women willing to defend it,” Trump said in introducing the roll call of airborne hardware.
Even as the Navy Blue Angels took their turn in the sky, a group of protesters was using a particular Naval aviator to antagonize Trump. A left-leaning political action committee distributed T-shirts depicting USS McCain, the Navy ship named in honor of the late senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), a bitter rival of the president.
“John McCain really gets under Trump’s skin because he killed Trump getting rid of health care,” said Gayelynn Taxey, one of the shirt distributors near the White House, referring to the late senator’s vote defeating Republican legislation to gut the Affordable Care Act.
But for Elaine and Wayne Hill of Auburn, Wash., the protesters’ criticisms ring hollow.
“People are complaining it’s going to be all military and stuff, and that it’s going to be a show of his power, but the tanks are just parked there for us to see,” said Elaine Hill, 57, who along with her husband was wearing a red MAGA hat. “It’s not a show of his power; it’s a show of American power.”
“Right, exactly,” chimed in Sherri Fries, who was sitting on the curb with the Hills at the corner of 13th Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW, waiting for the parade to start. “People just jump to conclusions. It’s a shame.”
As they waited in the sticky morning heat, the three commiserated about the politics of their liberal hometowns.
“Let me shake your hand,” Elaine Hill said to Fries, smiling. “You know, that’s part of why we wanted to come down [to Washington],” she added. “We can’t trust what we see in the news, so we thought, ‘Let’s just see it for ourselves.’”
Despite the debate over Trump’s use of military hardware — a practice critics say is reminiscent of public celebrations by authoritarian regimes — the vehicles imported as props by the armed forces were keeping a low profile as crowds gathered.
The two Bradley armored vehicles were located behind chain-link fences near the Lincoln Memorial, inaccessible to crowds. The tanks could scarcely be seen.
“I wish I could get in there,” Ali Safaei sighed, poking his nose into the fence as he gazed at a Bradley.
Safaei, 30, said he has mixed feelings about Trump — particularly the president’s hard-line policies toward his home country, Iran. Safaei immigrated to the United States more than six years ago and now studies computer science at the University of Maryland. Curiosity drew him to the Mall, but he was disappointed that the tanks were not on display.
Public safety and transportation officials said midafternoon that the day was going smoothly.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services treated several people for heat-related ailments, but nobody suffered serious injuries, according to spokesman Vito Maggiolo. He said most of those treated had been at the parade on Constitution Avenue NW.
A spokeswoman for the Metro transit agency said the system was operating on schedule, with no problems reported. Major routes into the District were clear of crashes, with light to moderate traffic, as motorists appeared to be heeding officials’ advice to stay off the roads.
Trump’s appearance was one of many celebrations throughout the Washington region.
In addition to the National Independence Day Parade along Constitution Avenue NW, which began at 11:45 a.m., parades were held in the Palisades and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Bagpipers appeared in Takoma Park, Md. Cannons and fireworks were to be shot off at Mount Vernon. The Washington Nationals played a home game, winning 5-2.
The traditional site for the holiday’s fireworks along the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was to be moved to West Potomac Park. The second show was to be launched from flatbed tractor-trailers parked behind the Lincoln Memorial. Police urged habitual attendees at the Mall celebration to familiarize themselves with new access points and road closures.
Rachel Weiner, Rebecca Tan, Laurel Demkovich, Cortlynn Stark, Joe Heim, Fenit Nirappil, Luz Lazo and Peter Hermann contributed to this report.

OPERATIONS DIVISION Captain Cheryllynn Williams
In 2017, there were 41,344, incidents in Sangamon County where deputies either initiated a law enforcement service or were dispatched to a call.
There was a lot of movement in the operations division in 2017. In April, Will Brooks, Jordan Cox, and Ryan Kuntzi were hired as a Sangamon County Deputies. Deputy Brooks began the Field Training Program immediately due to prior law enforcement training, and Deputies Cox and Kuntzi began the Illinois State Police Recruit Class. Sergeant Andy Danes was transferred from second shift to the Investigations Division in August. Detective Nancy Finley was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to second shift. Deputy Travis Dalby was transferred from second shift to Crime Prevention in March. Deputy Andrew Brashear was transferred from first shift to the Investigations Division in November.
In June, Deputy Knox retired after 25 years of service. His humor and kindness will be missed.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 (law enforcement motto)

NYmag JEFF SESSIONS 4:52 P.M.Attorney General Jeff Sessions Resigns at Trump’s RequestBy Eric Levitz@EricLevitz Out of Session. Photo: Pat Greenhouse/Boston Globe via Getty Images
Jeff Sessions has tendered his resignation, at the president’s request. Less than 24 hours after the 2018 midterms drew to a close, Donald Trump has forced his first attorney general out of his administration, clearing the way for a man who has publicly accused Robert Mueller of taking the Russia investigation “too far” — and mused that a new attorney general could thwart his probe by denying it funding — to become the Justice Department’s interim leader.
We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well....
....We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.
As a member of Trump’s 2016 campaign, Sessions was forced to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation of ties between that campaign and the Russian government. The president has long decried Sessions for refusing to subordinate this ethical obligation to his (imaginary) duty to immunize the commander-in-chief from legal liabilities. But Matthew Whitaker has no conflict of interest in the Russia case. And although he will not (immediately) inherit direct supervision of the Mueller investigation, he will have the power to seal records, withhold funding, and disrupt the probe by other means — as Whitaker himself once explained in his capacity as a CNN talking head:
Appearing on CNN in July 2017 — before he was in his current position as Sessions’s chief of staff —
Whitaker mused about a scenario in which Trump might fire Sessions and replace him with a temporary attorney general.
Whitaker noted that federal regulations still gave the attorney general power over the budget for a special counsel.
That temporary replacement,
he then said,
could move to choke off Mueller’s funding.
“So I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced with a recess appointment,” Whitaker said, “and that attorney general doesn’t fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to almost a halt.”
Whitaker is a former U.S. Attorney and 2014 Senate candidate in Iowa who joined the Justice Department last fall. Here are a few other things that he has publicly claimed to believe:
• Robert Mueller has no legitimate authority to investigate the Trump Organization’s finances, and if he does (which, he has), “then this would raise serious concerns that the special counsel’s investigation was a mere witch hunt.”
• Donald Trump was right to fire James Comey — because James Comey should have prosecuted Hillary Clinton:
Comey’s announcement last July that he would not recommend prosecution of Hillary Clinton for violations of the Espionage Act were a shock to many in law enforcement both inside the FBI and out…[H]is pronouncement that “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring such a case was just wrong, and I said so publicly at the time. I was a federal prosecutor for five years and was proud to serve in the Department of Justice, and I would’ve brought that case.
Clinton set up an entire secret, unsecured communications structure outside of the government she was charged with serving at the highest level; she was the Secretary of State. Classified information that, in the wrong hands, could potentially bring harm to our country – and many in service to our country — was available to be appropriated.
(Whitaker has never called for any investigations into — let alone prosecutions of — the Trump administration’s many, many, many violations of information security protocol.)
• All federal judges should be “people of faith” who take “a biblical view of justice.”
• There shouldn’t have been an independent counsel’s investigation into Russian interference because there wasn’t such an investigation into the Obama administration’s many scandals:
Calls for an independent counsel or commission to investigate allegations that Russia tried to interfere with our elections ring hollow when similar calls for special counsels during the scandals of the Obama administration were dismissed out of hand by the same people making these demands now.
So, clearly, Matthew Whitaker would make a sober, fair-minded, and trustworthy overseer of the Justice Department’s transformation into Donald J. Trump’s private detective agency.

Cory Booker’s 911 CallsBy
ROB LONG
September 13, 2018 10:49 AM
Sen. Cory Booker at a Senate Judiciary hearing, March 2018 (Joshua Roberts/Reuters)
Tuesday
Start Call
911 Operator: This is the 911 operator, what is your emergency?
Cory Booker: This is Senator Cory Booker. I want to report a crime. No, wait, a series of crimes. I want to report nothing less than an entire criminal enterprise that has the tri-state area in its grip.
911 Operator: Sir, is this an emergency?
Cory Booker: I can’t believe you’re asking me that question. Is it an emergency? Yes!
911 Operator: Sir, what is your location?
Cory Booker: I understand why you’re asking that question. That’s the procedure, right? The rules and regulations of the whole 911 power dynamic. But you have to understand. I am in danger here. My life is in danger, just by dropping this stunning bombshell. I am exposing a vast and violent criminal organization — I call it “organized crime,” and sidebar: If you use that phrase please credit me — and despite the danger — and I’ll admit it, the fear — of paying the ultimate price, I am willing to stand up and speak the truth.
NOW WATCH: 'Trump Supporters Fired Up For Midterms
911 Operator: Sir, is this an emergency?
Cory Booker: There is an organized group of criminals in the tri-state area, some call it “the Mafia,” and they control illegal activities such as gambling, prostitution, drug peddling — though to be fair, one of the heads of the so-called “Five Families” has resisted entering into this arena — and they are about to move west, to the sleepy cowboy town of Las Vegas, Nevada — are you writing this down?
911 Operator: Sir, is this an emergency?
Cory Booker: Well, it’s not an emergency emergency.
911 Operator: The 911 line is reserved for actual emergencies, sir.
End Call
Thursday
Start Call
911 Operator: This is the 911 operator, what is your emergency?
Cory Booker: This is Senator Cory Booker. I have reason to believe that the class of medications known as “opioids” are currently being abused throughout the country, with special concentration in post-industrial areas in the Rust Belt and the Appalachian Valley.
911 Operator: Sir, is this an emergency?
Cory Booker: People don’t want to talk about it. It’s something you don’t hear about. Maybe because the people currently suffering under the crisis — and yes, I call it a “crisis” and I’m aware that fashionable pundits will call me crazy or delusional — but because the victims of this crisis are poor and working-class, the entire problem is being ignored and swept under the rug. No longer!
911 Operator: Again, sir, is this an emergency?
Cory Booker: You’re not listening. I am going to blow the lid off this thing! Consequences be damned!
End Call
Sunday
Start Call
911 Operator: This is the 911 operator, what is your emergency?
Cory Booker: This is Senator Cory Booker. I want to report that the Twin Towers in Manhattan’s downtown financial district have been struck by what appear to be two passenger jets that have been hijacked by terrorists.
911 Operator: Sir, what is your current location?
Cory Booker: It doesn’t matter where I am, don’t you see? The point is, the buildings are burning. And I am racing there to rescue whoever I can.
911 Operator: Sir, are you reporting a current fire emergency?
Cory Booker: Will I be in personal danger? Yeah, sure, I guess. Does that matter to me? Are you kidding? I don’t even think that way. I am going to run into those burning buildings and save every life I can, and if people call me “hero” or “brave,” so be it.
911 Operator: Sir, please give me your current location and the location of the emergency.
Cory Booker: Downtown Manhattan. Twin Towers.
911 Operator: Sir, the Twin Towers were destroyed 17 years ago. Currently at that location is what is called the Freedom Tower, a high-end retail mall, and a moving memorial to the victims of the terror attack and the first responders who lost their lives during the rescue.
Cory Booker: Yes. Yes, I knew that. But I don’t think any of that lessens my personal heroism. And if I could just add, at this juncture —
End Call
Monday
Start Call
911 Operator: This is the 911 operator, what is your emergency? Wait a minute. Is this Cory Booker?
Cory Booker: Maybe. Why do you ask?
911 Operator: Sir, you have been asked to stop making 911 calls.
Cory Booker: Can I just — this one — I’m serious about this one — look, I know, okay, that sometimes I’ve been a little late with some of this stuff —
911 Operator: Sir, there are emergencies waiting to —
Cory Booker: Can I finish? Seriously. This is a real one.
911 Operator: Okay. Fine. What is your emergency?
Cory Booker: Tropical Storm Katrina is building into a Category 5 hurricane off the Gulf Coast. If it hits the levees along Lake Pontchartrain, just above New Orleans’ Ninth Ward —
911 Operator: Sir, stop.
Cory Booker: I am heading down there to personally reinforce those levees and save the city.
911 Operator: Stop.
Cory Booker: Is my life in danger? Yes. Am I quote unquote a hero for doing this? Those are your words, not mine.
