@audaciious -  Normally, matters in the supernatural community stayed in the supernatural community. They were quickly covered up from the normal human world, by the Masquerade or the Scarlet Screen or the Veil or whatever one wished to call it; different communities had different names depending on their location, species, and so on. And as the usually-undisputed ruler of his domain, Abraham “Bram” King usually oversaw this process in this city via a team of contacts from plants in the police department to creatures who couldn’t wait to devour a few bodies down to the bones so no one could notice anything ODD about them at the morgue. Typically, he did not need anyone else involved besides those already in his extensive network. And when he did, it was someone who was already an extra in these matters. Never before had it been someone who was totally ignorant of the supernatural world, but needed to be made aware of it. Bram was baffled by it, but he and his strategic team had worked this from every angle, and then the diviners and seers that he had on staff had worked it from a few more, and everyone came to the same conclusion: The only way this will get handled is with this specific man. And that specific man was Dean Lawson, a private eye in his mid-40s and perfectly human and, while dogged and diligent in digging up dirt in the world he knew existed, was utterly ignorant of the other world right ….not right before his eyes, no, but right beyond his line of sight. As it was for most humans. A bizarre choice. Bram still had his doubts. He’d only relented towards giving it a try once he finally got assurance from Dia, a techno-witch and his top consultant, that Dean was the best, perhaps the only, option. Why that was, though, even she couldn’t say. He hated that. But heavy is the head, as they say. . . “Mr. Lawson,” Bram said, as he entered the PI’s office, a hulking figure that looked almost absurd in his tailored suit, like a gorilla wearing a tuxedo, “We spoke on the phone. I’m Mr. King, for the 3 o’clock. I hope you don’t mind my being a touch early.” Early indeed. The appointment was not for 3 PM, but 3 AM. Bram had arrived at 2:45 on the dot. He did not sit down, nor hold out his hand to shake, but continued to speak, “I understand this is perhaps an odd hour for you—though perhaps not, considering your line of work—but it was necessary. I wish you to see the most recent crime scenes firsthand, and they’ll be off-limits to us “civilians” tomorrow when they’re discovered by the police. Meaning, yes, two new ones just happened, which makes our case that much more urgent. If you’ll come with me to the car, I’ll give you the details on the way; time is of the essence.”

Books I’ve Read in August
A mixed bag this month
Cosmoknights by Hannah Templer | 4/5
“Chin up, brave girl.”
An enjoyable and quick read that got me out of a reading slump 🤞 I loved the premise of the book, and the artwork is genuinely so beautiful!! The novel feels like a mix of sci-fi and sports fiction (two genres I absolutely love), and overall had so much fun with this book!
Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser & Robyn Smith | 2.5/5
“Oh, whatever. This is the remix!”
The illustrations were wonderful, and I liked the way that hair was used as symbolism throughout the story (although I was disappointed as it didn’t occur as frequently as the title led me to believe). I liked the idea of having a collection of shorter slice-of-life stories with an overarching plot, though I feel that this book didn’t achieve it to its fullest potential; many parts felt unresolved and inconsistent, contributing to a lack of overall cohesiveness. I also didn’t like the way that their depiction of depression and medication was handled (and also left unresolved).
Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall & Lisa Sterle | 2/5
How close anger and hunger are, really. Like different songs in the same key. They can be hard to differentiate.
A fast paced read that tries to mix dark academia vibes in literature with the werewolf genre. The artwork is excellent, and I loved the character designs and the use of color. Though the premise is awesome, the execution of it is subpar at best. It felt cliche and surface level, and overall lacked substance. That, along with the frequent micro-aggressions, tainted my perception of the novel.
How to Bite Your Neighbour and Win a Wager by D. N. Bryn | 3/5
“I want you to bite me.”
This is a different take on the vampire genre than I was expecting; loved the worldbuilding (low key really dense for the length of the novel!!) and the way that vampirism is more of a medical condition rather than a supernatural one. But while the worldbuilding was strong, the chemistry between the two leads unfortunately was not. I feel like this would’ve been a much better read had the characters been given more time to learn to love and forgive each other.
The Only One Left by Riley Sager | 2/5
The thing I remember most--the thing I still have nightmares about--is when it was all but over.
Ok [cracks knuckles] let’s do this. The beginning of the novel was my favorite, and the author did a wonderful job of setting the scene. However, the atmosphere was not maintained throughout the course of the story. My main issue with this book is its pacing, and the fact that most of the twists felt very randomly dropped in (especially near the end).
The Alchemy of Moonlight by David Ferraro | 1.5/5
“To live in sin in plain sight of everyone.”
This is a retelling of a gothic story, but it wasn’t a very good one. Both of the romances involving Emile felt very underdeveloped; whilst Bram was an incredible supporting character, Henri was very lacklustre. Henri is in a position of power over Emile, and reading about his manipulative actions and attempts at forcing a relationship painted him clearly as an antagonist rather than the leading love interest. Also, his poorly written redemption arc very much soured my impression of the novel. The premise is promising, but it’s execution was disappointing.
A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson | 4/5
Maybe it’s a matter of tenses. Of grammar. Our love existed, it does exist, it will exist. On the great continuum of time, perhaps it is the tenses that will cease to be. What does the scientist in you think of that?
This has no reason to be so sad 😭 Loved almost every minute of reading this book omg!! I really like the way that different characters represent the past, present, and future of this tiny town. I thought the characters were well fleshed out, and while the pacing was a tad slow, the story actually benefited a lot from that!! Would recommend :)

OH MY LITTLE GIRL - ozaki yutaka
リリィ ( lily ) - shimizu bonnou
凩 ( winter wind ) - yourness
そなちね ( sonatina ) - tempalay

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU PLAYED AIR GUITAR?  last night at karaoke ...
WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH? i don’t know if i have an ongoing celebrity crush , but there are plenty of celebrities i think are really attractive. sophie turner makes my head swim. and i keep telling my students that abe hiroshi is my ideal type but it’s kind of a joke LSKGJD
WHAT’S A SOUND YOU HATE; SOUND YOU LOVE? i really hate the 7am/5pm song that they play in my town every single day. there was an nhk drama filmed in my city almost 10 years ago and the city council took the show intro and outro and used them for the songs over the town speakers. at first it was cute but now it’s irritating every day. but i do love rain sounds , and two of my friends here have really really lovely singing voices that compliment each other so well ( even though their best song is wonderwall ).
DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS? no

DO YOU LIKE THE SMELL OF GASOLINE?  occasionally. on long road trips where i’m already a bit nauseous from travel , i can’t stand it. but if i’m filling up my tank normally , then i like it.
WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?  i think maybe it was the bombardment ? or the new batman movie.
WHAT’S THE WORST INJURY YOU’VE EVER HAD?  not really that bad , but i once scraped my knee down to the kneecap and i have a gnarly scar now. i don’t wear shorts in public because of it ( ultimate kiyoko move ).
DO YOU HAVE ANY OBSESSIONS RIGHT NOW?  lawson just released a new gochujang chicken onigiri filling and it’s delicious as expected , and i’ve also been listening to a lot of true crime podcasts lately so maybe those two things ?
DO YOU TEND TO HOLD GRUDGES AGAINST PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE YOU WRONG? i don’t think so ? a lot of times i just distance myself and then over time we grow apart , or i pretty much forget because i have a lot of stuff going on that usually outweighs other people’s actions
IN A RELATIONSHIP? yeah no and no thank you

𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 : i feel like everyone has been tagged mebbe but if u haven’t then i tagged you :3c

Doing the nostalgia thing again.  Go figure, lol.  Anyway.  Today I’m lamenting the early departure of some shows that I watched once upon a time and there are so many.  Too many that (were) ended either right as they were getting good or just weren’t given a proper chance.  Oh what could have been.  Here are some of them, off the top of my head.  This is by no means a complete list because there have been just too many for me to remember.  Feel free to add your own.
I either follow actors/actresses that I have enjoyed in previous shows or get drawn in by the drama or fantasy or utter sci-fi-ness (lol) of it all.
Bunheads
"Bunheads" tells the fish-out-of-water story of Michelle Simms, a once-promising classically trained professional dancer who was drawn to the lights of Las Vegas, where she became a showgirl. After she impulsively marries her persistent suitor, she moves to his sleepy California coastal town, where he lives with his mother, Fanny, herself a former dancer. Fanny now runs a local dance studio. Michelle ends up bonding with some of Fanny's students after meeting them. Among the students are sweet Boo, who struggles with her body type; rebellious Sasha, who has the talent to be a ballet dancer but doesn't have her heart in it because of family issues; shapely Ginny, who's not comfortable in her own skin; and fun-loving Melanie, ready for whatever life throws at her. The students benefit from Michelle's knowledge, but she also benefits from them as they help her adapt to small-town life.
Off the Map
Idealistic, young Dr. Lily Brenner lands at an understaffed medical clinic in a tiny town in the South American jungle. She is joined by other young doctors, all of whom are running away from personal demons. The clinic was founded by enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was formerly the youngest chief of surgery at UCLA. Keeton will teach the newcomers how to save lives in the most-challenging environment they have ever faced.
Defying Gravity
An international crew of eight astronauts -- four men and four women -- sets off on a mysterious, six-year mission covering billions of miles aboard a ship called the Antares. Inspired by the fictional docudrama "Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets," the show tells the story of both the astronauts as they explore Venus and the other planets in the solar system, and their supportive and dedicated ground crew. Episodes alternate between the present, on the current mission, and flashbacks to earlier years when the final eight were still in the grueling selection and training process.
Flashforward
Residents of Los Angeles go about their day unaware that a mysterious event is about to change their lives. FBI agents Mark Benford and Demetri Noh are in a car chase; Benford's physician wife is in the middle of surgery; and Benford's friend Aaron Stark works on power lines high above the ground. Suddenly, something causes everyone in the world to black out for just over two minutes. During that time, each person sees a series of events in his or her own future -- some good, some bad, some apparently nonexistent. As people begin to piece together their visions on a worldwide website, Mark and Demetri use the information to try to pinpoint the cause of the blackout, and people are still trying to determine whether destiny can be changed, and what effect those changes may have on others.
Invasion
What if natural disasters were alien smokescreens designed to mask something far more ominous? When a hurricane threatens a small town in Florida, park ranger Russell Poole's young daughter is the only one to see small lights floating towards the water, seemingly unaffected by the vicious winds. At the time, he thinks nothing of her claim, but begins to suspect something may be amiss when his missing ex-wife is found, with no memory of what happened during the storm. In the aftermath of the storm, water-based creatures infiltrate the town and take over the bodies of the town's residents through a cloning process.
V (2009)
Earth has its first encounter with an extraterrestrial race. Calling themselves the Visitors and promoting peace, they seem to be friendly, but their congeniality may be a cover for a malevolent agenda. Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell), an FBI agent, discovers a secret about the aliens that threatens the lives of Earthlings, including her teenage son, who sees them as a sign of hope. Meanwhile, Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), already questioning his faith when the Visitors arrive, seeks answers outside his church and finds other dissidents who believe the Vs are not what they claim to be. The ABC series is billed as a reimagining of a 1980s miniseries by the same name.
Hannibal
Gifted criminal profiler Will Graham has a unique way of thinking that allows him to empathize with anyone, including psychopaths. But while helping the FBI pursue a particularly complicated serial killer, he decides he could use some help and enlists the brilliant psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. The two form a partnership and it seems that there is no villain they can't catch together, but Lecter harbors a dark secret. His own brilliant mind has gone to the dark side and he has more in common with the criminals they hunt than Will could possibly imagine.
Anne with an E
This reimagining of the classic book and film is a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world. Amybeth McNulty stars as Anne, a 13-year-old who has endured an abusive childhood in orphanages and the homes of strangers. In the late 1890s, Anne is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who live on Prince Edward Island. Anne, who proves to be uniquely spirited, imaginative and smart, transforms the lives of Marilla, Matthew and everyone else in their small town.
Pitch
Talented baseball pitcher Ginny Baker immediately rises to fame when she is called up by the San Diego Padres and becomes the first woman in Major League Baseball. She immediately sets in on the task of proving herself to her teammates, starting with team captain and catcher Mike Lawson. The two share an immediate chemistry, putting Mike in the middle of tensions between the beautiful new player and certain teammates who don't appreciate a woman out on the mound. Not all of her fellow Padres are so averse to change, with center fielder Blip Sanders providing support through her journey.
Colony
In the not-too-distant future, Los Angeles has been invaded and occupied by outside forces, causing a rift between the city's residents; some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences that come with that choice. Former FBI agent Will Bowman and his wife, Katie, must consider their familial obligations when making their decision because they were separated from their son, Bram, during the invasion. Proxy Snyder, a cunning and powerful leader within the occupational government, offers Will the opportunity to get Bram back if he works with the invading faction. Will's decision doesn't sit well with Katie, but the couple risk their lives -- and their relationship -- to protect their family.
Life Unexpected
After 15 years of being with different families in Oregon's foster-care system, Lux decides to try her luck as an emancipated minor. As she navigates the legal system in pursuit of that goal, she encounters her birth father, bar owner Nate "Baze" Bazile, living like an aging frat boy with two slacker roommates. He is stunned to learn that he has a teenage daughter and introduces Lux to her mother, radio personality Cate Cassidy, who is sad to learn her daughter has grown up in foster care but thrilled to meet and get to know the girl. She has plenty of opportunity to get acquainted when the judge decides Lux isn't ready to be emancipated and grants temporary custody to her birth parents.
Crisis
A vengeful mastermind ambushes a schoolbus carrying the children of Washington, D.C.'s, elite, abducting the children and their chaperons, and creating a national crisis. The powerful parents -- including the president himself -- find themselves at the mercy of the abductor with nowhere to turn, creating an unthinkable situation that puts the entire nation at risk. As the authorities work to rescue the children, the parents discover how far they are willing to go to protect the people they love.
Emerald City
When a tornado transports Dorothy Gale from Lucas, Kansas, to the faraway land of Oz, her arrival sets in motion a prophecy about a disastrous event known as The Beast Forever and strikes fear into the land's almighty ruler, the Wizard. On her quest to meet the Wizard in Emerald City, Dorothy encounters witches, an amnesiac soldier, a sheltered little boy and many more mysterious beings who will ultimately shape the future of Oz and Dorothy's place in it.

Today we have a special project underway, and I’m asking for your help with it. Our main publishing imprint, Raw Dog Screaming Press, is pushing the novel Hounds of the Underworld up the bestseller charts. We signed the writing team of Dan Rabarts and Lee Murray in the hopes of sharing their rich Maori and Chinese New Zealander take on dark fantasy and crime thrillers with audiences in the USA. Years later, as we prepare to publish the final book in the trilogy, we’re giving Hounds of the Underworld a renewed push. As a black co-owned and woman-co-owned company, we believe right now is the time to be reading something different. As our nation works to isolate itself from the outside world we’re working to maintain a connection to other nations. As we wonder what happened to our culture we seek to immerse our community in what other cultures have to offer. The $0.99 sale we’re running on the eBook edition of Hounds of the Underworld won’t last long. You might think that $0.99 isn’t worth it, and you want to throw in your support later when the book is back to being full price, but we’re working to build enough momentum that Amazon’s algorithm pushes the book to everyone who might be interested in the subject matter. Already it’s on three top bestseller lists on Amazon, and #1 in horror on Kobo, after just one day! Easy ways you can help us raise awareness for Lee and Dan today: *sharing with your network *gifting the book to the book lover in your life *writing a quick review if you’ve read Hounds of the Underworld *Buying a copy for yourself to enjoy later Dislike Amazon? No sweat! The book is on sale at a reduced price on all major platforms, but only for a short time. For my part, I plan to revisit the world Dan and Lee so meticulously created before the third installment, Blood of the Sun, is published later this year. It a brilliant, fun read, but hey — don't take my word for it, listen to these experts: "Rabarts and Murray (At the Edge) mix crime drama and horror in this lively, promising series launch set in a near-future Auckland, New Zealand...a delightful, refreshing spin on urban fantasy tropes." —Publishers Weekly "…a wild and gruesome treat, packed with mystery, action, and dark humor. Horror fans will devour it!" —Jeff Strand, author of Wolf Hunt "Filled with an incredible unity of voice and magnificent world-building, Hounds of the Underworld was impossible to put down. I was hooked on the first page." —Jake Bible, Bram Stoker Award-nominated novelist and author of Z-Burbia, Mega, and Salvage Merc One "A dark tech-noir so near to our future, it could be tomorrow, hard-boiled and hair-raising! One of the best speculative fiction novels ever written." —Paul Mannering, Engines of Empathy Every purchase or share from one of these retailers is a huge boost. Thank you for helping us further our efforts to bring more unique books to the United States market! Amazon: https://ift.tt/3cJu0d3 Apple Books: https://ift.tt/2MzzUCU Kobo: https://ift.tt/3eYOpfl Google Play: https://ift.tt/37235YC Nook: https://ift.tt/2Ug3yB7 From the Back Cover Winner of the 2018 Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Novel On the verge of losing her laboratory, her savings, and all respect for herself, Pandora (Penny) Yee lands her first contract as scientific consult to the police department. And with seventeen murder cases on the go, the surly inspector is happy to leave her to it. Only she’s going to need to get around, and that means her slightly unhinged adopted brother, Matiu, will be doing the driving. But something about the case spooks Matiu, something other than the lack of a body in the congealing pool of blood in the locked room or that odd little bowl. Matiu doesn’t like anything about this case, from the voices that screamed at him when he touched that bowl, to the way his hateful imaginary friend Makere has come back to torment him, to the fact that the victim seems to be tied up with a man from Matiu’s past, a man who takes pleasure in watching dogs tear each other to pieces for profit and entertainment. Hounds of the Underworld blends mystery, near-future noir and horror. Set in New Zealand it’s the product of a collaboration by two Kiwi authors, one with Chinese heritage and the other Māori. This debut book in The Path of Ra series offers compelling new voices and an exotic perspective on the detective drama. by John Lawson

Our House. ITV.
Based on the best selling novel by Louise Candlish, starring Tuppence Middleton and Martin Compston, Our House tells the story of Fi Lawson, who arrives home one day to find a family of strangers moving into her house and her husband, Bram, has disappeared. A slow starter but definitely worth seeing through to the end.
