Exer: I burned my tongue once drinking tea.
Brenda: I dropped a hair dryer on my leg once and burned it.

Ron: I was taking a cup of noodles out of the microwave and spilled it on my hand and I got a really bad burn.
Jackson:
Jackson: I have emotional scars.

David: Normally, I’d say yes without hesitation, but I feel like this is going somewhere and I don’t like it.
-
Jackson: I currently have 7 empty notebooks and I have no clue what to put in them. Suggestions?
Ken: Put spaghetti in it.
Jackson: I'm currently taking suggestions from literally anyone but you.
Timothy: Put spaghetti in it.
Jackson: I'm currently taking suggestions from anyone but you two.
Jolie: Put spaghetti in it.
Jackson: I'm no longer taking suggestions.
-
Exer: Let me show you a picture from last night that really upset me
David: Okay, but in my defense, Ron bet me 50 cents I couldn’t drink all that shampoo.
Exer: That’s not what I wanted to- you drank SHAMPOO?!
-
Brenda: Bye Pamela! Bye David! Bye Exer! Bye Ron! Bye Pamela!
David: You said ‘bye Pamela’ twice.
Brenda: I like Pamela.
-
Pamela: What did you guys get in your yearbook?
David: 'Prettiest Smile'
Brenda: 'Nicest Personality'
Jackson: 'Most likely to start a bar fight'
Ron: 'Least likely to start a bar fight, but most likely to win one'

That's it! Sorry if it wasn't that accurate. I tried my best with my anxious, sleep deprived mind

The Folio Book of Horror Stories, by the Folio Society
A beautiful collection of short horror stories by The Folio Society, published in 2018. Considering most (don't quote me on this!) of these stories are in the public domain or legally accessible online, they can be read online with a quick google search. However, this edition is outright marvelous, and evidently, tons of love has been poured into the creation of it - Corey Brickley's illustrations are divine and it also contains writer and editor Ramsey Campbell's introduction, both of which tie the collection beautifully.
Writing a review of each story wouldn't be too affective, as each is unique on its own. I have read The Yellow Wallpaper and House of Usher and both are beautifully written and depict aspects of supernatural horror (Poe) and psychological horror (Gilman), and the collection provides a great opportunity to expose oneself to short horror stories from the 18th century up until modern times. An awesome book to introduce readers to the different subgenres of horror before deepdiving into full-lenght books! The list of the stories are as follows:
▪︎ The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allan Poe (1839)
▪︎ The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1892)
▪︎ Count Magnus, by M. R. James (1904)
▪︎ The White People, by Arthur Machen (1904)
▪︎ Ancient Lights, by Algernon Blackwood (1912)
▪︎ The Music of Erich Zann, by H. P. Lovecraft (1922)
▪︎ Smoke Ghost, by Fritz Leiber (1941)
▪︎ Brenda, by Margaret St. Clair (1954)
▪︎ The Bus, by Shirley Jackson (1965)
▪︎ Again, by Ramsey Campbell (1981)
▪︎ Vastarien, by Thomas Ligotti (1987)
▪︎ Call Home, by Dennis Etchison (1991)
▪︎ 1408, by Stephen King (2002)
▪︎ Flowers of the Sea, by Reggie Oliver (2011)
▪︎ Hippocampus, by Adam Nevill (2015)

“THIS IS A 10 YEAR OLD BLOG THAT I’VE JUST STUMBLED UPON IT, NOW. IT’S LONG BUT GOOD READING. THERE ARE REVIEWS AND EXCERPTS FROM OUR MOST-LOVED BOOKS ABOUT MJ. COME ON, EVERYONE ! IT IS TIME TO OPEN YOUR MINDS AND YOUR HEARTS, WHERE MICHAEL IS CONCERNED. HE WAS NOT A PEDOPHILE !!! HE WAS NOT A WAKO JACKO !! HE WAS NOT SUCH A WEIRD MAN, AFTER ALL ! “ — BRENDA McDONALD , FB.
“I dedicate this blog to Michael Jackson, who loved the world and everyone in it; who gave of himself , body and soul, not only in his music and dance, but also in Love, Kindness and Compassion, like no other entertainer before him, and continues to give even in death. ‘I wish I would have known you in this lifetime, Michael… ’til we meet in Heaven!’" – BMcD.
“On June 25, 2009, the world lost one of its biggest superstars, Michael Jackson ! Michael was born August 29, 1958 and I was born 15 months later. I grew up watching him grow up and reach Mega Status, right before my eyes ! He really knew how to Sing, Dance and Grab an Audience !! Starting at the ripe age of five years old ! Dick Clark, American Bandstand emcee said, “I knew Michael as a child and watched him grow over the years. Of all the thousands of entertainers I have worked with, Michael was THE MOST OUTSTANDING !! Many have tried and will continue trying to copy him, but his talent will never be matched.” ~ (Quote is taken from the MJFC website.)
Tumblr media
American Bandstand was a TV show that came on for an hour every Saturday between 1963 and 1987 (24 years!) and introduced many artists into our lives, one of the groups being the Jackson 5 then later Michael as a single performing artist. Dick Clark had people in the audience get up and dance to the current songs of the times then had some of those people rate the new songs as they were introduced to the world. It was a fun show! I looked forward to watching it every weekend! Like most young kids it seemed back then, I loved rock and roll. That was what I mainly listened to in the beginning. Out of rock and roll came different genres of music including hard rock, heavy metal, disco and pop music and, of course, that’s where Michael comes in. I kept up with his career for a time and watched him become an incredibly sexy and handsome young man. As time marched on I noticed he was wearing makeup and I never knew why. I’ll discuss that later in this blog. Sometime shortly after that I started listening to country music and before I knew it I was a die-hard country music fan. I no longer kept up with Michael’s career, I never knew about his charity work so when he was accused in 1993 and then in 2003 for the same charge, I tended to fall into the web of the media and their lies. Now that I know what I know, my heart goes out to him, in regret ...
The day Michael died (I did not understand why , since I had him pegged as a pedophile), I cried that entire evening ! ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ had opened in theaters that same evening and I was trying to watch it with my daughter and the young man she was dating at the time; but, between the very loud movie and crying so hard, I had developed a terrible headache ! I remember thinking all I wanted to do was leave the theater, go home, go to bed, get some sleep and hopefully I would wake up the next morning and realize it had all been a horrible nightmare !
I finally got home, was getting ready for bed and turned on the TV to see what all was being said about Michael. The program I was watching was focusing on his amazing talent. I couldn’t watch it for long, though, as I had to go to bed to get some sleep for work the next day so I turned off the TV . But I couldn’t go to sleep, so I got out of bed and went on YouTube to see what all the fuss was about (because I had forgotten) and I first pulled up his performance of Billie Jean during his 30th Anniversary Special at Madison Square Garden in 2001. I was blown away (I know my jaw dropped) then suddenly I felt even sadder because I had missed out on his incredible talent through the years.
I started to feel guilty, too, and I continued to cry for two solid months ! It probably seems like I’m exaggerating, but I promise I’m telling the truth ! It felt like a spiritual scolding and those of you who believe in God know what I’m talking about. It is called chastisement. I decided to do something with that, feeling like I was supposed to. I felt God was tugging on my heart to research Michael... It was a strong urge and I could not ignore it ! So I spent countless hours on the internet and bought several books. My mission was to find out if the allegations against Michael were true or not and if he was indeed as weird as I thought he was ! Once I did my research and realized that Michael’s love for children was innocent, pure and came from a good place, and that he was not weird at all, I then felt compelled by God to write this blog.
One of the first books I bought for my research is titled “Redemption: The Truth Behind the Michael Jackson Child Molestation Allegations”, written by Geraldine Hughes. She was the legal secretary for Attorney Barry Rothman who represented Evan Chandler, the father of the first boy who accused Michael of molestation, and witnessed firsthand how the two men worked diligently together to frame Michael of child molestation.

The Walker’s were preparing for the lead up to Christmas at Valtoria. They had decided to celebrate in the cabin that Drake had built behind Riley’s back as a wedding present.
Riley removed the blindfold, looking around bemused. Where were they? They stood in front of a beautiful wooden log cabin, the scenery was breathtaking.
“What do you think?” Drake smirked, he knew she would be shocked, but she was speechless and frozen.
“Is this a second honeymoon? Where are we?”
“This is a permanent honeymoon. We are in Valtoria. This is our home. This is why I’ve been secretive. I organised it with Liam before we left for the honeymoon. Everyone knew- and helped out.” Riley thought about everyone trying to help Drake out without her being suspicious- not quite believing how damn lucky she was having these people in her life.
They had originally wanted to just spend the time leading up to Christmas as a family, however Maxwell was persistent about inviting himself over - “I’m the twins godfather, I’m family” he insisted. Riley felt so very blessed, having great friends surrounding her since she had first come to Cordonia- she was thankful for the health of her children and the happiness surrounding her little family and home. ‘Making memories’ with these people was an important factor, especially after all the trauma she and Drake had been through all those years ago.
The scenery surrounding the cabin was; breathtaking and serene- you could almost taste the freshness of the crisp air. Through the large open glass windows, the view was scenic especially at night time - where the dark moonlit trees of the forest, standing together in silent formations. Smell of wood burning lingering, along with the crackling fire created a warm atmosphere welcoming the Duke and Duchesses guests.
Riley was heavily pregnant with their third child- even though she was feeling lethargic, she was always excited for this holiday as it was her Gran’s favourite. Arianna and Jackson were keeping each other company- whilst Drake and Riley sorted through the decorations to turn the cabin into ‘Santa’s grotto’.
“Riley, I’ve got a surprise for you. It’s a bit sentimental- but I hope that you’ll love it.” Riley turned to her husband- providing him with a perplexed expression. “It’s been eight years since your Gran passed, I know how much you miss her. So I ordered this bauble- it’s got a photo of you and her on our wedding day. The other bauble has a photo of her with the twins.”
“Drake, I love them.” She barely spoke, holding back the tears. “I am so lucky to have such a thoughtful husband. I love you.” Tracing the baubles with her finger, she held them both towards her heart.
“I’m the lucky one Mrs Walker.” Placing the mistletoe above the fireplace on a high shelf, Drake lent in and forced his lips onto his wife’s. His tongue slipped inside her mouth, starting off gentle but soon turned demanding. Riley’s fingers ran through his hair, pulling him closer- his hands protectively holding his heavily pregnant wife. ‘Mistletoe hung where you can see’
‘Ew dad, that’s gross!” Jackson looked mortified, whilst Arianna was the sensible twin.
“Stop kissing! Right now! Uncle Max says that grown ups shouldn’t do that in front of kids.”
“Well Uncle Max is right.” Riley was slightly annoyed that they had been ‘caught in the act’. Thinking back to her saying those exact same words about her parents to her Gran.
“No uncle Max is just jealous.” Drake whispered in her ear. “You and I, will return to this later on!”
*****
Drake had cut a fresh tree from the forest for their Christmas tree this year, upon his return to the cabin- he noticed Riley sat with their child next to the fire reading them a story. Overhearing them, he was in awe of his wife- she was the most loving mom.
“He was so pleased when one day some children came with their parents to choose a fir tree to decorate their living room. The children adored him at first sight.”
“Well I hope that you adore the tree that I chose.”
“Daddy!” Drake dropped the tree to the floor, and picked up his two children- holding them tightly. “Shall we decorate the tree then kids?”
Drake set the tree into the box, a royal blue tree skirt with a snowflake pattern on the ground surrounded the box. A Walker tradition of having an old-fashioned train that moved across the peripheral of the tree skirt, was included. The green natural tree that was over seven feet tall stood dormant-with a golden star that extended towards the ceiling. The twinkling lights surrounding the branches provided a riot of colour along with sentimental ornaments from Rileys childhood, as well as Drakes.
Riley checked on the food that they had prepared- the food smelt like her Grans used to, the memory would always be in her mind. She was determined, to carry on the Smith/Brooks tradition with her own children.
“That smells lovely. Elsie’s recipe?” Drake asked as he walked into the kitchen, hugging his wife from behind.
“Of course!”
“Come and dance with me, not too much though, I don’t want you going into premature labour.” Riley raised her eyebrows at him, knowing he was joking but there was still that possibility that baby walker could make an appearance anytime from now.
“I’m going to play your Grans favourite song, whilst we dance and wait for Maxwell to provide us with his presence.” Drake noticed Riley’s lip curl up, as well as tears forming.
“Alexa play- ‘Rockin around the Christmas tree’ by Brenda Lee.”
Riley thought back to her childhood with her gran in Orlando as a ten year old- the same age that the twins are. They had spent their annual vacation visiting the theme parks and beaches.
“Hmm that smells yummy Gran. What is it?”
“Pumpkin pie sweetie. Do you want to lick the spoon? It’s over by the sink. Don’t tell your mother or father though- it’s our little secret!” Placing her finger over her lips, Riley smirked- her and her Gran had a special bond. A bond that no one would understand.
“Yummy! I wish I could live here with you. I miss you when we go home.”
“That’s why it’s important to make memories. Come and dance with me by the tree.”
“Rockin around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling
Elsie sung to her granddaughter, who’s eyes lit up- Elsie spun her around as she executed a perfect twirl.
“You’re a good singer Gran.”
“Not as good as Brenda Lee. She was not much older than you when she released this song.” Continuing dancing with her granddaughter- she immediately covered her eyes.
“Why are you covering my eyes, I can’t see.”
“Because your mommy and daddy are kissing underneath the mistletoe. You’ll understand when your older Ri.”
“Ew that’s gross! I am never kissing a boy. Can we get back to the dancing?”
“Of course baby girl, then tomorrow we will go and see Mickey Mouse- and I’ll tie your hair up in a big bun or high ponytail to sneak you on all the rides as usual.”
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way
Drake whispered in her ear, as they continued dancing- with the twins joining in. Riley was knocked out of her trace, as Maxwell bounded through the door, dressed as in a red suit- his surprise for his nephew and niece.
“Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas!” He shouted over dramatically. Walking over towards their guest, Riley provided him with a soft smile, before attempting to hug him with her bump getting in the way.
“It’s not Christmas yet dipshit!”
“Drake you’re so miserable they should call you Scrooge or Mr Grinch!”
“Max, my husband is very sweet. You just don’t realise.” Referring to the surprises he had given her, he was only a marshmallow with his immediate family- to everyone else he was the sarcastic miserable Duke.
“You’ve got bigger since I last saw you. Maybe you should have come as Santa instead of me?”
“I’m 37 weeks pregnant Max! Don’t mess with a pregnant lady.”
“Sorry your grace, you know I love you- where are the kids?” Riley pointed over to the living room- Maxwell coughed needing to prepare to provide a deep voice.
“Arianna and Jackson Walker, have you both been on my good list this year?”
The two children gave each other that knowing luck- knowing exactly who it was, but decided to sneakily play along in order to receive ‘Santa’s gifts’.
“Yes.” They both said in unison, Jackson wore the infamous Walker smirk, whilst Arianna bit her lower lip and fluttered her eyelashes. Maxwell couldn’t believe the irony of how they both looked and acted like Riley and Drake. Thinking back to him and Bertrand forcing Riley towards Liam during the social season- he was glad that she was stubborn and followed her own heart. Maxwell handed the gifts over, both twins opened up their gifts before laughing at their Uncle still keeping up the Santa act.
“Uncle Maxi!” Arianna and Jackson shouted in unison- both jumping into his arms.
“You knew it was me? Riley they must get their brains from you... please don’t kill me Drake. Kids you’re getting too old to do that now.” Riley held Drake back, and gave him a whiskey. Knowing that would calm the situation down. “It’s Christmas baby, don’t do anything silly. We can all begin to sing and dance when Bertrand, Savannah and Bartie arrive.”
*****
Bertrand, Savannah and Bartie arrived eventually- they all decided to sing carols around the fire- all feeling jolly and in the Christmas spirit.
“Riley, Drake there’s someone at the door.” Savannah looked through the window, but she was too intoxicated that her vision was blurry. “They’ve got greyish hair, probably carol singers.” Riley waddled to the door, opening it there was no sight of any visitors. Closing the door slowly, she heard ‘Rockin around the Christmas tree’ playing again. Assuming that Alexa was just playing it automatically.
“Guys, turn the music off.” She shouted to her guests, not meaning to sound rude- she asked them to do this in case the person came back.
“It is off. There’s no music playing.” They all looked at each other concerned.
“Must be my imagination then Max. I’m sorry.”
“You look tired, why don’t you have a quick kip.”
“I’m fine Drake. I’m just going to prepare the pumpkin pie.” She placed a kiss on his cheek, insisting that he enjoyed his night.
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
“I love you sweetie. You’re doing a fabulous job, and that smells lovely. I think the men look a bit too hot- whilst I’m here give your old gran some eye candy like I had on your honeymoon.” Riley stood frozen, hearing her Grans presence next to her- before laughing at the memories from her honeymoon.
“Mr and Mrs Walker! Put some bloody clothes on. I’m not getting any younger- you’re both going to send me into an early grave with the shock!”
“Darling calm down. I’m fine. We all came to join you for your last night. Don’t argue the toss either, madam. You’ve both had nearly 3 weeks alone together and we’ve all missed you. I love you baby girl...Drake, keep that top off- us single women need some eye candy!”
“She’s.... she was trying to strip Max then moved onto Liam. They were both mortified. I had to escape before she did it to me.”
“I’m going to ‘rock’ around the Christmas tree for old time’s sake.” Riley scrutinised the living area- overhearing them all say there was a cold draft. Unable to see her Gran, she held onto the table in shock- not only with the words from her Gran.
“Riley are you okay?” Savannah noticed the spillage on the floor, and immediately began to clean it up. Drake came into the kitchen with Maxwell leaving Bertrand babysitting.
“For fuck sake Savannah can’t you handle your drink? I think you should have your wine in one of the children’s cup.”
“I didn’t spill anything Drake! It was Riley she was spooked.” Drake looked at his wife, who looks as if she was under a spell.
“What’s up baby? Are you okay?”
“Elsie’s here. She’s been singing to me, she asked for you all to be topless again. Elsie’s coming....” Drake didn’t believe in ghosts, but believed if Riley’s Gran was here it was because she had witnessed Riley miss her. She was here protecting them all.
“Okay, she just didn’t want to miss out on all the fun, she was always up for fun.”
“I mean this Elsie is on her way. Savannah is cleaning up my waters that broke as Gran Elsie went to dance by the tree.”

Minerva McGonagall/Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter, my first fandom and first major pairing), Kathryn Janeway/Chakotay (ST: Voy), Helen Magnus/John Druitt & Helen Magnus/Nikola Tesla & basically Helen with anyone because HELEN (Sanctuary), Sharon Raydor/Brenda Leigh Johnson & Sharon Raydor/Andy Flynn (The Closer and the Closer ONLY, was not a fan of what MC turned both Sharon AND Andy into), Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard (Stargate: Atlantis), Daniel Jackson/Janet Fraiser (Stargate: SG-1), Laura Roslin/Bill Adama (BSG), Harry Pearce/Ruth Evershed (MI-5/Spooks), Nick/Jen (City Homicide), Matthew/Alice (Doctor Blake Mysteries), Phryne/Jack (MFMM), Abby Griffin/Marcus Kane (The 100, fuck you JRoth), oh! and Cassandra Pentaghast/Varric Tethras (Dragon Age: Inquisition)
9. What are the best things about your current fandom?
I get feedback on my fics and we’re trying to keep this fandom afloat even after everything that’s happened. I do love it, but I also don’t write (much) for the main pairing of the show, and I know not everyone agrees with my pairing, but they’re still very supportive
26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?
Quotes, lyrics, sayings, etc
44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?
*shrugs* I’d love not to be one of a handful of Matthew/Alice writers (I’m tired, y’all lmao) but I know not everyone ships them so, it’s honestly alright in the end.

Focus on Motown Records: The emblem of the American Dream
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little money and a big dream. This is what Berry Gordy had in 1958, the year he received 800$ loan from his family, to make his dream come true: creating Motown records, one of the best and most known record companies which will revolutionize music. Not only did Motown revolutionize music, but also it churned out some of the most talented and greatest artists on earth such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Jackson 5 and I could go on and on!!
Let’s see how the magic began!!
Gordy, decided to name his new record company, Tamla and the first single produced was “Come to me” by Marv Johnson. A catchy tuned and brilliantly performed song!! Such a good first single!! Super recommended!! The song soon became appreciated in Detroit and also in New York to the point that New York’s United Artists Records approached Gordy to distribute the song nationally!! Among the artists who signed a contract with Motown in 1960 there are Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye. As regards Marvin Gaye, he was a member of a group called Moonglows and when the it split up he signed a contract with Motown. Gaye reached the success in 1962 with the single “Stubborn kind of fellow” with the backing vocals by Vandellas!! This song, is really in the style of Motown and Marvin Gaye. The peculiarity of the record is that little “question and answer” game between Gaye and the Vandellas. Such a good song to play while you’re taking some time to relax!!
1961 has been a very proficient year for Motown due to the fact that so many talented artists such as The Supremes and Stevie Wonder signed with the company and in addition to that, the Temptations released their debut album. As regards the Supremes, they were a group from Detroit, firstly known as the Primettes. In 1960 Smokey Robinson got them an audition with Motown but before getting a contract with the company they needed to finish high school. Eventually the group changed the name into The Supremes and finally signed with Motown. They released “I want a Guy” just two months later. The next artist to sign with the record label in 1962, is Stevie Wonder. He was just an 11 years old kid when he first got the contract. The artist was first introduced to Berry Gordy by Ronnie White, from the Miracles. At the age of 11 Stevie Wonder was already able to play harmonica and his first single was “I Call It Pretty Music But the Old Folks call it Blues”. The next to produce their debut single were The Temptations. The group signed with the company in 1961, and after that, “Oh mother Of mine” was published. 1961 was also the year Motown had its first single gaining the No 1 on the Billboard chart!! The single was “Please Mr. Postman” by The Marvelettes.
1962 was another a good year for the record label. Gordy decided to gather some of the artists in his record company to go on tour around the Eastern seaboard. The last dates of “Motown Revue” ended at New York’s Apollo Theater. In addition, he had the brilliant idea to tape the shows and as a result in 1963 “Let me go the right way” by Supremes and “Fingertips” by Stevie Wonder will be two smashing hits!! These records are contained in “Live at The Apollo Vol. 1”.
1963 is also the year the Four Tops signed with the label, and “Fingertips” by Stevie Wonder reaches the No. 1 on the best sellers and the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The same year Berry Gordy signed a deal with British company EMI Records which chose to release Martha & The Vandellas hit “Heat Wave” as the first Motown single.
Tumblr media
Moreover speaking about years, another relevant one for Motown is 1965. During that time Emi Records agrees to “create Tamla Motown Records as a label in its own overseas markets”, along with this, some of the artists of the label including Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Miracles and the Supremes, start touring England, Scotland and Wales. Additionally, in 1965 Brenda Holloway opens some of the Beatles concerts in New York
In 1967 the 16 year old Stevie Wonder writes and record his next hit “I Was Made To Love Her”. The recording sessions take place at Hitsville in March. Stevie plays harmonica on Whitney Houston’s 1998 version of the song, reshaped as “I Was Made To Love Him” and produced by Lauryn Hill. Among other artists who have covered it: Jackie Wilson, the Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Michael McDonald, Tom Jones, King Curtis, and the Jackson 5 and Chaka Khan. What’s really relevant about the song are the stunning vocals and also Stevie’s brilliant skills in playing harmonica. I really love this song and it’s really recommended!! The same year Florence Ballard leaves the Supremes and she’s succeeded by Cindy Birdsong. In addition Diana admits in Her autobiography: “It was very tough to maintain the stamina to keep going”... “Florence loved to sing, but she just didn’t seem to be able to keep up with the lifestyle.”
Furthermore in 1968 The Jackson 5, a group from Gary, Indiana, attracts attention and audiences in their hometown and then in Chicago and New York. Thanks to their talent they manage to get an audition with Motown in Detroit in July. The brothers are driven from Gary to Detroit by their father Joe Jackson. “Our job was to perform like we’d never performed before” says Michael Jackson in his autobiography, Moonwalk. Berry Gordy views the audition on videotape and eventually gives the 5 brothers a contract.
In 1969 The Temptations release “Cloud Nine” which soon climbs the Top 10 hit. The single wins Motown’s first Grammy® award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), in the category of Best Rhythm & Blues Performance/Duo or Group.
Regarding the Jackson 5 after recording in Detroit, move to Los Angeles and begin to work on their debut single released for Motown, “I Want You Back.” The song shows the amazing vocal talent of a very young Michael Jackson and the already good skills of his brothers with musical instruments. They were so young and so talented!! The decade closed with the departure of Diana Ross from The Supreme and Jean Terrell joining the group. Diana makes her last TV appearance with the Supremes on December 21 on Ed Sullivan’s The Swinging, Soulful Sixties, and they perform “Someday We’ll Be Together”. Eventually Diana Ross cuts her debut solo 45, “Reach Out And Touch (Somebody’s Hand)”
The new decade begins with “I Want You Back” at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 – the first of the Jackson 5’s four consecutive chart-toppers this year. “We were particularly impressed with the ‘I Want You Back’ session”... “because that one song took more time (and tape) than all the other songs on the [album] combined. That’s the way Motown did things in those days because Berry insisted on perfection and attention to detail.” affirms Michael Jackson in his autobiography “Moonwalk”. This quote is so important because it is in my opinion the emblem of Motown: perfection and attention for details and creating music of quality!! From my point of view this is why Motown succeded so much!! Eventually The Jackson 5’s first tour as a Motown act begins in May in Philadelphia.
Moreover in 1970 Motown establishes a new label, Black Forum, to capture poetry and music which reflects the times and the turbulence such as: racial conflict at home and a foreign war draining America’s resources and spirit. The first releases include LPs by Stokely Carmichael, by Langston Hughes and Margaret Danner, two masters of prose and poetry. The late Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam” is another Black Forum release, following earlier albums via Motown by the civil rights leader, including 1963’s The Great March To Freedom. This was recorded in Detroit, when King gave an early version of his momentous “I have a dream” speech to thousands in the city. “Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam” is awarded a Grammy® by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for best spoken-word recording. It is only Motown’s second Grammy®, and the company has to wait two years for more statuettes. In addition Marvin Gaye after the premature death of Tammy Terrel, restarts working on music to reflect the era’s socio-political climate, notably the Vietnam War, where his brother serves. On this note, “What’s Going On” is released. The song “What’s Going On” is opening the album and in my opinion is an untouchable milestone in music history, especially for its socially engaged lyrics. It’s a shame some artists have tried to cover the song stripping it out of its important and relevant meaning!! However I recommend you the album and the original single “What’s Going On”. The same year Berry Gordy is resident in Los Angeles, and due to that he decides to introduce a California-based label: the MoWest. The record company is open to artists and music from outside, producers, and newcomers. Over time, these include performers from all points of the compass, such as Thelma Houston, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Syreeta, Lesley Gore and, briefly, the Commodores.
Furthermore the record label decides to create a show dedicated to Jackson 5, in order to celebrate the upcoming concert in their hometown, Gary, Indiana. The show includes some guest stars on the TV event such as Diana Ross and Bobby Darin, as well as some comedians. After “Goin’ Back To Indiana” is televised, Motown Productions’ decides to produce a Saturday-morning cartoon series, “The Jackson 5ive”, which airs on ABC-TV, featuring the youngsters’ fictionalized adventures in showbusiness. The brothers do not voice their characters, but Diana Ross manages to do it for her part in the first episode.
Tumblr media
In 1971 another new group called “The Commodores’” signs with the label, and begin to record, “If I Were Your Woman.” “The Zoo (The Human Zoo)” is released in March 1972 via the California-based MoWest. The same year Stevie Wonder opens for the Rolling Stones’ summer tour of North America, beginning on June 3rd in Vancouver and running through July and August. The ticket price was just 6.50$!! An extremely small price to listen and experience great music!! It must have been a dream!! The aim was to broaden Stevie’s audience, after the release of “Music Of My Mind”. The release of the album is followed in October by “Talking Book” This work is one of my favorite by this genius!! The album is featuring some of the best timeless masterpieces ever produced by the artis like: “You are the sunshine of my life”, “Blame it on the sun”, “You’ve got it bad girl”, “I Believe (When i fall in love it will be forever)” which is one of my favorite and it has also been covered by George Michael (i recommend you the version of George Michael). The album is also containing one of Stevie’s most famous song “Superstition”
Speaking about the The Jackson 5, their popularity in concerts is getting bigger and bigger. The group played in more than 30 cities through July and August, wrapping the shows in Honolulu. Meanwhile “Lookin’ Through The Windows” is a Top 10 albulm. Their opening act is the Commodores. The five perform their first significant concert dates in Europe this year, with shows in Holland, Germany, France and Britain. It’s also in 1972 that Smokey Robinson decides to leave the Miracles. “The last gig was a heavy happening,” writes Smokey in his autobiography, Inside My Life. “I decided to film my final day with the Miracles, from playing chess and cards in the dressing room to the concert that night.” Smokey is anguished as he sings “The Tears Of A Clown” for the last time with his bandmates . His wife Claudette, who retired from performing with the Miracles in 1964, rejoins the group onstage for the farewells, and Smokey introduces his replacement: Billy Griffin. Motown used the recordings from the final concerts for a double album, “Smokey Robinson and The Miracles 1957-1972”.
The next year (1973) “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” as well as “Cloud Nine” is honoured in three categories at the Grammy awards. The single wins the award for: best R&B vocal performance by a duo or group, best R&B song, and best R&B instrumental performance. No other recording collects three Grammys this year. Moreover, the R&B instrumental wins bestows recognition upon conductor Paul Riser. In my opinion the song is perfectly arranged and the instrumental part is extremely mesmerizing!! In April Motown’s first movie, Lady Sings The Blues, starring Diana Ross as the jazz singer Billie Holiday is released. Diana receives an Oscar nomination as best actress for her depiction of Holiday, and wins a Golden Globe award as most promising female newcomer. Meanwhile, the soundtrack LP reaches the top of the Billboard charts, and the singer’s version of “Good Morning Heartache” is a Top 40 hit. “It was a brand-new style for me” ... “at times slightly intimidating but mostly exciting.” says Diana Ross in her autobiography “Secrets of a Sparrow”. Furthermore 1973 prospects to be a good year for Stevie Wonder, when “Superstition” becomes his first No. 1 on the pop charts. This year Stevie is working on another masterpiece “Innervisions” which will be completed for the release on August 3rd, along with a series of concert dates. At the 16th annual Grammy® awards on March 2, Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” album and two tracks from his previous LP, “Talking Book”, are contending with seven nominations, and win five awards. The major prizes are: Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Innervisions” and “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life,” respectively, while in the Grammys’ R&B Male Vocal category for “Superstition”, also triumphs Marvin Gaye with “Let’s Get It On”.
The following year (1974) Stevie Wonder enjoys another triumph at the Grammy® ceremonies, for “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” which is honored as Album of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. “Boogie On Reggae Woman” gets the Grammy® for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The song was originally intended for his previous album, but “didn’t feel right for it” Stevie later says. “I went back and I had a demo of ‘Golden Lady’…and that felt better in that spot on Innervisions.” Meanwhile, another track from “Innervisions”, “Living For The City”, receives the Grammy® for Best R&B Song.
In 1976 Smokey Robinson’s successor in the Miracles, Billy Griffin, and one of the group’s original members, Warren “Pete” Moore, create a concept album, City of Angels which is described as a “soul opera.” The following March “Love Hangover” is released as a single from the new album by Diana Ross. The producer Hal Davis hears a demo of the song, and quickly records it with Diana in December 1975 in an eight-minute version aimed at the dance floor. “Love Hangover” rises to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late May, and also occupies the summit of the dance/disco and R&B charts. The same year, Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key of Life” is two years in the making, with the final package of 21 tracks. “I hope you enjoy this,” says Stevie to the crowd and he adds “But it really doesn’t matter. I gave it my all and all is the best I can do.” “I Wish”, the first 45 from “Songs In The Key of Life”, is released by Motown in late November, and rises to No. 1 two months later. “I wrote that on a Saturday in the summer of 1976 right after the Motown picnic”... “The song was inspired by the fact that we were having so much fun.” affirms Stevie. The album is another brilliant piece of art and it is also featuring some socially engaged songs such as “Black Man” and “Pastime Paradise” which will be covered by Coolio in the 90s. However, the original version will always remain unbeatable!! Another song I love in this album is “Isn’t she lovely”, which is such an happy and emotional record dedicated to Stevie’s newborn child, Aisha. The album is also so relevant because we can listen how Stevie experiments with some new technologies creating a new style. However he kept his typical musical imprint. This album is very recommended!!
“Live At The London Palladium” by Marvin Gaye is released in March 1977. It is a two-LP set, with three sides from the show, and the fourth featuring a new studio recording, “Got To Give It Up,” running almost 12 minutes in length. “Got To Give It Up (Pt. 1)” becomes the singer’s third No. 1 on the pop charts, while Live At The London Palladium reaches No. 3. Meanwhile Mary Wilson, a founding member of the Supremes, declares that she is leaving the group for a solo career. It follows the release by Motown in late ’76 of their Mary, Scherrie & Susaye album, which includes “You’re My Driving Wheel” their final R&B Top 50 hit. Mary, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene play their last concert together in London at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on June 12. They perform various Supremes’ hits from 1960s, as well as material from their own 1970s albums. Mary, Cindy Birdsong and Diana Ross appear together once more in 1983’s Motown 25 TV special, and the group is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame five years later. Berry Gordy is inducted at the same ceremonies.
In 1966 Rick James signed with Motown and in 1978 he reconnects with the label , and got the contract with company again. In August, “The Wiz” follows a number of Motown film productions, including Lady Sings The Blues and Mahogany (both starring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams) . Shortly after wrapping filming for The Wiz, Diana Ross records an album of her own versions of the songs, in which she plays all the characters. However it remained unreleased until 2015.
The following year Stevie Wonder buys a complete Sony digital recording and editing system to use in the making of his first film soundtrack score, “Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants.” The orchestral suite is very different to his previous work. Stevie’s first 45 from the project, “Send One Your Love” becomes a major hit. To promote the soundtrack album’s release, Stevie undertakes a six-city tour with the National Afro-American Orchestra, including a performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. He performs while excerpts from the film are screened behind him. “I love the idea of orchestrating and composing”, “I would love to see ‘Secret’ done as a ballet. I just think if you have a love for music, you cannot limit yourself to any particular kind of music.” declares Stevie. In October 1975, Stevie Wonder performed with Bob Marley on “I Shot The Sheriff” during a concert in Kingston, Jamaica, while the Wailers jam with Stevie’s band. In the fall of 1980, “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” is part of Stevie’s new album, “Hotter Than July”, and its first single release. “Hotter Than July” soon reaches the Top 3 of the Billboard charts as “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” is a Top 5 single. The album also features “Happy Birthday,” created for the recognition of Rev. Martin Luther King’s birthday as a national holiday. On May 13, 1981, Stevie dedicates his birthday concert – in Stockholm, Sweden – to Bob Marley, who had died of cancer two days earlier. “Hotter Than July” is honestly my all time favorite album by Stevie Wonder. I really recommend the album!!
The next year “Street Songs”, made at The Record Plant in Sausalito, where Rick had cut his third album, “Fire It Up”, is released. “I decided to go back to Buffalo to chill,”... “I disguised myself and went to the Perry Projects, just to walk around. That’s when I knew what I needed. Reality. The street.” he explains. He lived in the studio for a week, writing and recording persistently. “Marvin Gaye was still my idol”, “and I wanted to create something along the lines of his What’s Going On – only with more of an emphasis on sex.” he declares in his autobiography, Glow. In February 1991, Rick wins his first Grammy award.
At a Motown press conference in Hollywood in 1982, Berry Gordy announces that Stevie Wonder has re-signed to the company and releases “Original Musiquarium I”, a 16-track, two-LP set, featuring twelve of Stevie’s biggest hits and four new songs: “That Girl” “Front Line” “Do I do” and “Ribbon In The Sky.” I recommend you to listen to “Do i do” which is one of my favorite songs in the album, especially for the brilliance of the instrumental part!! In May Lionel Richie’s career away from the Commodores takes flight with the chart-topping achievement of “Endless Love” his duet with Diana Ross, including “Lady.” His own debut solo album “Lionel Richie”, is released in September. The album contains nine songs either written or co-written by Lionel. “I didn’t want a cast-of-thousands production,” the singer/songwriter says. “The challenge was to find musicians who were willing to sweat and pull off precisely what I was looking for.”.“Truly” reaches No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November, and is also a worldwide success. It later wins a Grammy® award in Best Pop Male Vocal category.
Eventually in 1983 the two-hour Motown 25 special is staged and recorded by Motown Productions before an audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on March 25, for later broadcast by NBC-TV. The proceeds from the event will be donated to charity. Among the Motown artists taking part are: Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Jackson 5, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye Martha Reeves, Jr. Walker, Mary Wells and the Commodores. Guest stars include Linda Ronstadt, Billy Dee Williams, Dick Clark and Adam Ant, and the show is hosted by Richard Pryor and Smokey Robinson. The show includes the Jackson 5 singing their early hits, followed by Michael Jackson’s explosive solo performance of “Billie Jean” and introducing his universally renowned dance step the “Moonwalk”. The performance is followed by Marvin Gaye’s compelling version of “What’s Going On” preceded by his reflections on music and artistry; Stevie Wonder’s ebullient performance of “I Wish”; and the performance “battle” between the Four Tops and the Temptations. Lionel Richie is seen on video, singing “You Mean More To Me” to young Lanette Butler, poster child for the current campaign by the National Association of Sickle Cell Disease. Most anticipated is the Supremes’ reunion of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, filled with drama and an excerpt from “Someday We’ll Be Together” followed by a command to Berry Gordy to come to the stage, to be honoured by his stars. The show is edited and broadcast by NBC-TV as “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever”, and it is a huge hit with the national TV audience and the highest-rated broadcast of the week. Later in the year, it receives television’s prestigious Emmy award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program. Later, the show’s executive producer, Suzanne de Passe, says of the stars present that night, “Watching them try to get their turn to hug the man who had made it all possible for them brought tears to my eyes.”

In conclusion someone once said that good art is timeless and will live forever, I think Berry Gordy along with Motown artists were aware of it and they contributed to create and leave something we will cherish and love forever!! @motownrecordsofficial @motownrecords

Naming all 22 Democrats running in 2020 is now a meme
Tumblr media
Have you heard the news? Everyone's running for president in 2020! Well, sort of.
It's still early, but 22 whole Democrats have already announced their plans to campaign, and boy does it feel like a lot of people.
On Tuesday, Twitter user @MorganJerkins posed quite the challenge to followers by asking if anyone was able to name all 22 Democratic presidential candidates.
Can YOU name all 22 democrats running for President?
— Morgan Jerkins (@MorganJerkins) May 14, 2019
Jerkins' question was "very serious." She swears. But alas, unable to resist the opportunity to joke, the unhinged people of social media used the question as fuel for a new political meme.

To poke fun at the ridiculously large pool of Democratic candidates, people quote-tweeted Jerkins' question and each offered their own creative responses.

The Celebrity Cookout: Black Icons + Me (Part 4)
Tumblr media
“I’m rooting for everybody Black”
- Issa Rae
All right folx – this is it! We’ve made it to the final post of The Celebrity Cookout: Black Icons + Me (*cue Boyz II Men’s End of the Road*). Thank you so much for sticking with me and supporting this week-long personal project. It was really special to spend the past couple of days engaging with some of my Black friends and sharing stories and memories that they held so dear, and I am incredibly grateful for being given the platform to spotlight some of their voices.
Earlier this week, during the Rough Cut reading of Michael Jackson and the Devil’s Book, an audience member shared that one of the things that they appreciated about the show was the BLACKNESS of it all. I agree - its one of my favorite things about this macabre fantasia that Terry has composed. The invitation this story offers us, as Black people, to be fully and authentically Black, fully and authentically ourselves, and the understanding that Blackness is anything, and everything, we want it to be.
Hearing stories from folx reflecting on impactful Black celebrities in their own lives, I could not help but notice that time and time again, a similar theme emerged: I love this person because they made me feel seen. The fact is that so often, for Black folx, the reason that our idols are our idols, is because they allow us to tap into a certain part of ourselves, because they allow us to see ourselves reflected back, because, as the overeager PA blurts out in Terry’s play, they “make us proud to be Black.”
This play makes me proud to be Black. These stories make me proud to be Black. Thank you for tuning in, and thank you to the folx featured in today’s post! We will be back in the new year with some more hot content for you, so keep close and stay tuned!

Name: Peter A. Hometown: Mequon, WI
Who is a Black celebrity that has had a major impact on your life? James Baldwin is the Black celebrity who has had the largest impact on me.
Can you talk a bit about what that impact has been? As a Black gay man, Baldwin's identity lines up closely with my own. I remember the first time I read Giovanni's Room and then immediately after Notes on a Native Son. Both books felt like revelations. They profoundly articulated what I had been feeling as a Black queer in the United States.  A few years later I made a commitment to read all of his writings, and I happened to start this 'project' during a particularly difficult period.  His words and thoughts buoyed me during that time in a way no other writer has.
What is an iconic moment of theirs that has stuck with you (or, as the kids would say, lives in your head, rent free)? There's an interview with Baldwin and Maya Angelou which if you haven't seen.... run don't walk to YouTube and check it out.  At one point she asks him about homosexuality and he starts talking about love.  Eventually he says, "All I know is that if I love you.... I love you.  And, if I love you and dodge it, I die."

Who is a Black celebrity that has had a major impact on your life? Oprah Winfrey
Can you talk a bit about what that impact has been? The diversity of her impact - journalism, media, entertainment, philanthropy, education, world politics!

Who is a Black celebrity that has had a major impact on your life? Tupac. Beyoncé. Viola Davis. Can you talk a bit about what that impact has been? Tupac – His love for young people + storytelling ability + activism Beyoncé – Her love for black people + need to give others opportunities + pushing the envelope artistically Viola Davis – Her love for artists/black stories + ability to articulate the importance of learning about humanity through art + activism
What is an iconic moment of theirs that has stuck with you (or, as the kids would say, lives in your head, rent free)? Tupac - “Dear Mama”, Brenda’s Got A Baby, and his iconic A Different World episode
Beyoncé –  Beychella and performing in the Super Bowl as Black Panthers Viola Davis – Any speech of hers ever ever! Specifically the one with the Harriet Tubman quote regarding opportunities. Triple Threat of Acting. She has done every media for acting: TV, film, theatre (on and off B’way and regional theatre)

Name: Chantel W. Hometown: Long Island, NY / Kansas City, MO
Who is a Black celebrity that has had a major impact on your life? Beyoncé
Can you talk a bit about what that impact has been? I grew up watching Beyoncé in Destiny’s Child. I distinctly remember hearing and watching the “No, No, No (pt. 2)” music video when it came out. I remember “Bills, Bills, Bills,” I remember “Jumpin’ Jumpin’,” I remember “Bug a Boo” – and when she went solo, I remember “Work It Out” and “Crazy in Love” and B-Day and everything I Am...Sasha Fierce. She basically spent the 2010’s turning herself into a true icon – it was a joy to watch.
I loved Michael Jackson, I still love Michael Jackson - he was always around, especially as his lighter self. I remember when I first really watched the older music videos of him during his Thriller heyday and feeling like wow I kind of missed out on experiencing this live, in real life. And I remember when I realized that Beyoncé was the next coming of that, and how excellent of a performer she was, how hard she worked, her growth from 1998 through 2016 and just watching that was remarkable. It’s astounding. And she always tops herself, every single time. She is just so, excellent.
And so the impact for me has been that standard of excellence. Wanting to aspire to work as hard as she does and to put as much effort and care and discipline and excellence and dedication into a craft. I just think she’s fantastic.
What is an iconic moment of theirs that has stuck with you (or, as the kids would say, lives in your head, rent free)?
I do remember the moment when she dropped Untitled. The drop of the century. I freaked the fuck out. I really did. Honestly, the performance she did at the VMA’s of all of Beyoncé was also definitely a top moment for me. The Super Bowl performance of Formation is definitely a top moment. And Homecoming. Honestly. Ugh. Watching that for the first time was such an experience. In my little studio apartment. Hella late. Screaming at my television. Because it was just so beautiful. And so Black. And so her. It was just her doing her entire legacy of music for white kids at Coachella that were stoned out of their minds. But also it was really not for them. It was for us. And every single Black person really saw themselves. The impact!

Who is a Black celebrity that has had a major impact on your life? My favorite Black celebrity/had a major impact on me is Stevie Wonder.
Can you talk a bit about what that impact has been? Stevie Wonder is one of the first musicians I remember listening to as a youngin' and his music just has always made me feel at home. Also he can WRITE WRITE, so I love listening to his songs because of that as well. It transports me back to my mama's arms
What is an iconic moment of theirs that has stuck with you (or, as the kids would say, lives in your head, rent free)? I just feel like every time I watch that man play his piano it is iconic. Truly.
