Bright College Years - Ch. 1

Fandom: Heartstopper

Pairings: Nick + Charlie // Nick + Original Character

Summary: Nick and Charlie are perfect for each other. They’re stupidly, hopelessly, obviously in love. They’ve never wanted anything so much as they want to be happy together.

But what happens when that’s not enough?

AU where Nick went to Yale. What happens when the new distance to your boyfriend isn’t 300 miles but 3,000 and a literal ocean? What happens when the probability that this will only be temporary, that soon you’ll be in the same place every day again, isn’t 77% at Leeds but instead just 4% at Yale? What happens is that you panic, and you say all sorts of horrible things, and you have your first Real Fight, and when it ends it seems like your relationship does too.

And then…you get in. And when move-in day comes, he’s the first person you see.

I occasionally see posts/get messages about the various harry potter references in the bright sessions, etc. and I've gotten a bunch of new followers recently so just so any new/younger listeners of my shows know:

jk rowling is a terrible transphobe whom I hold zero respect for and I haven't given a dime of my money to her since she revealed who she truly is. I want the whole bright universe to be a safe space for trans people (including the trans folks in our cast and crew!) and if I could go back and remove those references, I would. but I can't! harry potter was an extremely significant part of my life until...well, until it became very clear who she really was. it makes me so sad to think that folks might be finding TBS now and get thrown out of the story by these references, but just know that the people who made the show do not stand by jk, and that in many ways, the show is a product of its time.

#the bright sessions #harry potter #jk rowling #transphobia #I know there's PLENTY to say about the bigotry in the actual books and I think there's a lot of merit to those criticisms #and I'll own to choosing not to see some of that stuff before all this went down bc the books were meaningful to me #(this is not HP specific - another beloved childhood book series that was EVEN more formative to me growing up)#(is also something I've grappled with in recent years bc I think the author is actually probably wildly misogynistic)#(even though he's never behaved badly (far as I know) in his public life - there's stuff in the text)#BUT ANYWAY #it can be so hard to remember that we didn't have ANY inkling of her bigotry in this regard until 2018 #all of the original run of TBS was written before that #and I'll admit I gave jk the benefit of the doubt in 2018 re: her liking that tweet! I wanted to give her a chance to learn and grow #and she did....not do that #but TAMA was written in that little grace period #and then a few references in TCT were taken out during recording bc june of 2020 was when she really started to go mask off #and so we were making changes in real time #we didn't know what to do about quidditch #bc we were like 'this is a sport that people play in college and it's just called that?'#'and it's already canon that caleb plays?'#and it wasn't called quadball yet #anyway not trying to make excuses!#just know that none of those references were put in with any malice #and I guess I *could* go back and rerecord all those lines and replace them #but I know enough about my original audio engineering to know that it woudl be VERY hard to make it sound natural #and idk I do think there's something to be said for not covering up errors in old work #I'm not going to try to pretend HP wasn't important to me #EDIT: I've turned off reblogs for this post #also this is not me trying to tell other people how to approach their own HP fandom #fanworks especially - there's no benefiting jo in that - and I think it's totally legit for ppl to want to take HP as their own!

So are the Big Bads of Junior Year going to be the Rat Grinders? AKA kids who leveled up 'the normal way' by doing a bunch of quests, grinding, taking on any enemy to get more powerful, but because of the 'luck' and 'opportunities' given to other kids (ie the Bad Kids) aren't being lauded or appreciated like they expected so they're taking it out on the Bad Kids, have taken advantage of it the summer they were gone, and are doing what they can to punish them for 'being rewarded despite failing at what's expected of them, despite actually saving the world'.

I wonder if all the members of Rat Grinders have classes that reflect those of the Bad Kids? We already know they have a rogue and a bard...

#d20 #dimension 20 #fantasy high #fantasy high junior year #this makes perfect sense to me story wise in terms of the past 2 seasons we had heightened tension and drama in the villains faced #from kalvaxas to the nightmare king to the night yorb at the beginning of this season #some pvp (even if the other ps is the dm) makes sense for a stripped back season focused more on relationship building #plus we've been missing the high school rival aspect of fantasy high this is a good focus for junior year #when you are now realizing you are in direct 'competition' with other kids for opps and positions in colleges and unis #and the rat grinders probably see the bad kids as having a leg up on everyone because they were able to save the world multiple times #and could parlay that into bright futures in any college they want like brennan hinted at in ep 3 #this season the rat grinders will try and separate the bad kids and put ultimate stress on them to break them apart or get them kicked out #getting rid of gilear to install a principal more aligned with their views #and yes i absolutely think those four yorkshire terriers in a sweatervest made it so gilear won a cruise #it's a very tracey glick thing to do

I fully believe that after The College Tapes Mark, Marley, Indah, and Neon form a "fucked up intense relationship with Damien that we have no idea how much of it was genuine" support group

#super happy art time #erika #shes based off a creepy dream I had years ago #and named after an old oc I had that I just. Completely forgot Abt. she takes some notes from her but not much #she n jenny are besties she likes cute things like plushies n stuff but also loves creepy shit but is too shy and embarrassed to admit it #like she loves stuffies and has a snorlax backpack and loves tigger but she also adores creepy rpg maker games with plenty of mindfuck #as said she's based off a dream I had that involved basil having an extremely abusive brother and being influenced to do bad shit as means #for a reward (snacks #watching TV #whatever). she has a sister like this who is horrifically abusive to her. she doesn't see her often #cause she goes to college and only visits during breaks. eri hides away during those times.#she has a loving grandma who isn't doing so well so she has a caretaker #who will gain custody of eri when her grandma passes #their parents aren't in the picture cause they're pieces of shit and her grandma fought for custody of them both #thing is her sister turned out like her parents basically (maybe even worse) and eri is...very nervous and anxious and bad at opening up #she calms down with stuffies #has one she carries around in her backpack. she's learning how to crochet #so she can make teeny crochet friends. she also wants to learn how to groom animals and care for them #eri is very bright n fun and offers snacks to friends outside of home #but at home she's in PJs and hides away when she isn't seeing her grandma.#she's super super anxious and can be kinda clingy #she's bad at asking for help and normally feels like shes constantly making up for... SOM #something* I HATE TUMBLR #at the core of it she's very intelligent (she's VERY good at reading people) and can be extremely protective of others #also struggling with some bad psychosis that's going unchecked #anyway Tumblr hates me. i was copy pasting my twt thread cause im too tired and exhausted from everything to keep typing lol

Honestly sooooooo fucked up that I thought my overwhelming daily fatigue and debilitating body pain was a product of the awful working conditions I was under for years and years... and yet, despite being out of work for half a year now, I'm still so fatigued and in pain all the time??? Like come on man that's not fair

Oh well maybe I have liver disease and they'll treat it and then I am magically so much more energized like I was as a kid. We can only hope !!!!

#speculation nation #negative/#um. not hoping i have liver disease but the blood tests blatantly state that it's not working entirely right.#not like major enough to be an immediate health emergency. or else my doctor probably wouldve called me #rather than referring me to radiology.#im just hoping that it's something easy to treat. it really would be so nice for my problems to be fixed like that.#and im mentioning it in conjunction with the fatigue just bc it can cause fatigue. ya kno.#probably is a good thing i caught it this early whatever it is.#like maybe it's Not fibromyalgia. but the fact that i pursued diagnosis for fibromyalgia spurred the blood tests #which alerted my doctor to the abnormal liver enyzmes.#if i hadnt pursued diagnosis who knows how much longer this wouldve gone on like this...#so! im still not happy to be doing a Fucking ultrasound for my liver. but. if it means catching whatever this is early #then like. it'll be worth it. doubly so if it does end up fixing my fatigue problems.#or even just some of them. i dont even need to be at 100% of what others can do #i just wanna be able to do half an hour of chores without feeling like im going to collapse 😭😭😭😭#it's really very troublesome. my life would be so much easier if i had the energy to do more than one thing per day.#(and if i do more than one thing i end up nearly bedridden the rest of the day. like today lol.)#im just trying to look on the bright sides so i dont start freaking out again about my liver not working right.#ultimately. even if i dont feel amazing. i dont feel all that different from how ive lived the past decade of my life.#or at least the most recent years. i kind of feel like my chronic pain has gotten worse. maybe fatigue too.#though i do know ive been dealing with both for however long. idk. might be recency bias. who knows.#ANYWAYS. im not actively dying. so i'll live to my appointments. and then i will hope it's smooth sailing from there.#(oh god i hope i wont need surgery. i dont want surgery. please im trying to graduate college i do not want surgery)#(god why is my luck always so bad)

🏹 : what is oc’s relationship with the other canon characters?

Sunny is a UA art teacher, so they have a mentor relationship with most of their students. Midoriya gets to see a bit more of them however, as he’s toshinori’s successor. Midoriya is the one who sees how Toshi and Sunny act together, and gets them to get back together 💀

Dave is the only other canon character that comes to mind when I think about individual relationships, as he’s mutual college friends with Sunny and Toshi. He’s the original matchmaker 😘 he introduced them in class or at a party or smth and they hit it off
