Yay, time for Hot Take time about the tumblr situation from someone who doesn't know jack about shit!

Just to explain a bit of my perspective. I'm from California. I've lived in multiple places around the state, but for a while, I lived, worked, and was taking classes in the Silicon Valley. I don't really have much experience with software or CS. I have a bioinformatics degree, which is mostly just automating statistics, being a poweruser, and having a little fun with ML, so I can't comment on things like web infrastructure or the software industry as a whole. But the classes I took in CS, and the connections I've made over the years, mean that I know a LOT of classic Silicon Valley techbros, for better or worse. So I kinda wanted to give my perspective on how these people think from someone who isn't in this world, but has kinda orbited around it at an arm's length.

A CEO throwing a petty tizzy fit is nothing new. Management being shitty is nothing new. But these are *companies*, and even though tumblr is a far cry from the massive giants of the industry, there still has to be complicity at every step of the way, down to the software workers. And guess what? @photomatt is absolutely right, that there are trans people and allies on the staff. They probably work hard and care deeply about the queer community here. And yet, the platform they're creating still has a transphobia problem. Any trans person will tell you that. Gender critical tags are still up, trans tags are spammed with bullshit medical information, hate gets thrown into inboxes all the time... And I could go on.

Most of the people working in Silicon Valley tech are, for the most part, good, intelligent, hardworking people, but with massive blind spots to the downstream effects of creating on online platform. This is deliberate. Tech companies deliberately cultivate blind spots, and basically weaponize "nerd sniping" to get their workers to look the other way (https://xkcd.com/356/). This problem is... slightly different nowadays, when social media is consolidated and everpresent, but these companies were still founded back in the day where this was the only mentality. Everyone engaged in solving interesting problems, mostly trained on abstract tasks, not realizing that they're creating a broadcast platform.

And don't get me wrong: this is NOT excusal for their behavior. But the reason its important to acknowledge what the problem actually is, is because it helps prime you for the ways they're going to weasel out of it. I guarantee that, no matter how this situation is resolved, it's going to be fully framed as a tizzy fit between @photomatt and Predstrogen, which will then be used as a deliberate deflection of criticism about transmisogyny on Tumblr as a whole. There is a much, MUCH larger discussion about the individualization of communal responsibility on a societal level, but the tech industry has their own unique flavor of it that I think its important to acknowledge. I'm guessing a lot of the employees are passionate about Tumblr, and cultivating its culture and unique features as a platform, and just never stopped to think about the management and how that was influencing community moderation. They still have a role to play in this.

For Tumblr, I think the form this is currently taking is linked to their gutting. They're running the platform on a skeleton employee base, and simply decided that oversight and moderation was an unimportant part of the whole thing, because they have that deliberately induced blind eye to it. Tech companies don't view oversight of the communications they're fostering as an essential part of their platform, even though that would be an insane way to manage a journal with editorials, TV show that interviews people, or similar. It's not quite the same, of course, but it's a simple to make comparison.

On a much more extreme level, this is the same reason you get so many tech working queer people in companies like Lockheed and Raytheon. Nerd snipe them with interesting, intellectually fulfilling problems, top it off with good pay, make the company large enough such no one person actually sees what end products they're making... I think you get the idea. No one wants to work on missile targeting system. You get a team of people working on an abstract image processing problem, though? By the time it's being implemented, that team is in too deep to stop and think about it. It's also why AI has gotten to the point it is. The initial groundwork was done by people so excited about the technology and deliberately misled about the end result... until they were so far in they had to dig their heels in.

Obviously those are all the wild extreme versions of Tumblr, a dying social media platform. But it's an interesting context for a lot of things imo.

So... yeah. Watch out for the individualization of the situation, and the deflection of guilt. I'm gonna stay on tumblr for the foreseeable future, it's essentially abandonware at this point anyways so leaving is kinda pointless. But I hope y'all will follow me elsewhere as well, my goal isn't to migrate off of here, it's to give people options.

You gonna do anything or make any statement about the rampant transmisogyny on this hellsite, especially in cases like predstrogen recently? Or yall gonna stay silent and keep letting/making us get pushed off of it.

I have a number of asks about this, so this is to address all of them, I won't do each individually.

We generally do not comment on individual cases, but because there seems to be mass misinformation around this, I will make an exception and comment on predstrogen.

First, Tumblr has a number of LGBT+ including trans people on staff, and they see things from the inside fully, and they're not protesting this case.

Why do we wrongly have a transphobe reputation? We did have an external contract moderator last year that was making transphobic moderation (and also selling moderation, criminally). As soon as we were aware that person was fired, and we later terminated the entire relationship with that contracting firm and have brought almost everything in-house (at great cost). I have previously commented on this publicly, several times.

I am not aware of any Automattician (people who work at Automattic and Tumblr) who has made any transphobic moderation actions. If it's reported it is investigated immediately, if anything were found that person would be terminated for cause immediately.

In predstrogen's case in addition to some mistagged sexually explicit posts, which on its own wouldn't be that bad, we have documented cases of harassment against other users. Most importantly, and why she is banned from Tumblr for life, is she made threats of violence against Tumblr staff.

That is never okay. Threats of violence is not protected speech. We will work with police and FBI where appropriate. I just got a death threat yesterday from someone mad about predstrogen, and that account was immediately terminated.

So regardless of whether you still think Tumblr staff is somehow a bunch of transphobes, know that threats of violence or death are still not acceptable and will result in immediate and serious action. Know that when you rile people up, they can do dumb things with possibly permanent consequences.

(2 hours later update: I have changed instances of the pronoun "they" or "their" to "the account" because I am unaware of pronoun preference in this instance and don't want to misgender anyone. Thank you for the people who reported this as an issue. Update 2: "She" is apparently better, the post now says that. Sorry for the mistake.)
