(Edit: Thanks to the people who informed me on what Leif's species is!)

Sat down and got to finally properly render these fuckers while also settling on how I should draw them. I actually did a tiny bit of research on their respective species, took a few elements here and there but nothing to drastically change them.

So as far as I'm aware, Leif is not a specific moth but plenty of blue and red moths will usually have the eye patterns on their wings and as well as have fluff on their bodies. Had fun with the posing and if you can guess where I referenced it then you get a cookie. Thought it was neat that the original concept was that he was suppose to dance.

Vi is obviously a honey bee, they're very well known to be fuzzy. I don't have much to say besides from that but if anyone doesn't know, only females have stingers.

Now Kabbu was really testing my patience, according to the wiki it states that is he is a rainbow scarab beetle. If that is wrong then too bad, those guys are gorgeous and it took me too long to figure how to balance the colors without burning my eyes. Its faint but noticeable, just so I can still be true to the game model, also I know it's not as visible here but I realize beetle wings are very pretty.

So what's the conclusion here? There needs to be a website dedicated to bug references so I can sit there and admire them all day.

Hoaxe had no name.

He also had no concept of the sort, so he didn't mind much.

“Names” were pictures in charcoal to tell him about other things. Plenty of things had that sort of name. 

He didn't, though. He had no need of one.

He hadn’t considered that these other bugs he'd found might try to give him one, though, and try they did. Whatever they'd decided on wasn't a name he could use, though – it was some strange jumble of sounds instead.

Not that it mattered, it was for their use, not his. 

…He assumed it was a name, at least. They seemed pleased when he responded to it, at any rate, and only used it when they wanted his attention. 

He thought, though he wasn't sure, that they might have other names for him, but he could never quite tell.

Most of them made do with a wave anyways.

He had never spoken his sound-name before. 

This was proving to be an oversight, a mistake, and a considerable inconvenience, because there were four bugs staring at him in bewilderment, and he had a distinct hunch that an introduction might help.

Unfortunately, the sound-chains used by the others were not something he knew how to use, and while pictures usually got the point across for other things, they didn't exactly work here. 

The bugs didn't smell like these lands, either – they smelled strange, walked strange, looked strange, and had strange noise-jumbles and sound-names that were a different sort of weird from the bugs he already knew. The feeling was probably mutual, if he was being realistic. Still annoying to deal with. He rolled his eyes at their wibbly nonsense-sounds and turned towards the village. Maybe the other sound-namers could understand them. 

As he began to walk, the group of four hesitated, looking between each other again. He waved his hand impatiently, hoping “follow” was at least a marginally universal gesture.

Close enough. They came with. 

A growl rumbled out from the darkness, and his hand shot to his sling. The group of four immediately started making more sound, the fools–

Oh. They'd never met the dark-bugs before, had they?

…Did he have to do everything here?

What’s all this? Well let me Tell You: this is a (possibly non-comprehensive) list of all the bugs (hymenopterans specifically) in bug fables who go by he/him pronouns yet have stingers .

For those who do not know, Stingers are modified ovipositors. IRL, bugs born male generally Do Not have stingers, seeing as ovipositors are an egg-laying organ. notice: there are 5 total wasps, 1 bee, and no ants (the only ant who goes by he/him in the game is Monsieur Scarlet, and he does not have a stinger - but this isn't really noteworthy because None of the ants in-game are drawn with stingers).

so like. My question is . What's going on with the wasps. I mean I’m pretty sure literally all wasps we see with he/him pronouns have stingers. Is it just because drone wasps are born less often or Do you guys think wasps are more predispositioned to be trans/transmasc specifically. I would chalk this up to the devs just not knowing if they hadn’t shown at least a Little understanding of bug biology already . Maybe they don’t know about the stinger thing but STILL.

I want to talk about the lore implications .Can we talk about it can someone worldbuild this with me can someone hold my hand and frolic with me. Does anyone want to live in this beautiful world with me

(for anyone wondering - no i have not been able to find any transfem characters thru the same means... nor through the means of Wings (male ants will typically have wings)... unless you want to count Bumble and Rebelle, who as velvet ants should absolutely have Very Large stingers, but seeing as neither have wings and velvet ant stingers don’t Jut Out as other wasps’ do anyway… mmmmwho knows) (that is unless you want to argue all the ants in the game EXCEPT Monsieur Scarlet are trans because none of them are drawn with stingers) (which would be incredibly funny . all things considered)

ok That’s my trans bugs post. If I missed anyone pleas tell me I’d love to update my list. And if you want to talk about how wasps are more likely to be trans u should talk to me about that too

Ant Kingdom/Outskirts/Piers

I had some time to kill, and remembered that gathering reference images for this games was a pain. Mostly because the Wiki was not really helpful and looking through play-throughs for a specific place takes too long.

So I resulted to re-installing Bug Fables and ran around like an idiot taking screenshots of the areas. Will I use most of these? No, but I'm sure someone out there does.

These photos don't cover everything, but there's enough to give a rough idea of the rest of the small rooms/open fields. I don't know if there's a mod that lets me hide the npcs or move the camera like Hollow Knight does but this will do.
