I think this is one of my favourite bits about Holmes's characterisation. Here's a man who's so competent and often appears extremely confident, but he gets extremely nervous and anxious, even depressed, if he feels like he can't solve a case (or doesn't have one). He makes his work a part of himself to such an extent that he will get literally sick when he feels like he can't meet his (own) standards. It's unnecessary to point out this is an extremely unhealthy (addictive?) relationship to his work. Most of his self-worth relies on his function, of him being able to solve cases - and of him being needed to do that. He will feel obsolete without - and this is also why he would be lost without his Boswell. When Holmes is well, he can make do with music and sensational literature and tobacco ash for a few days, but if he's not, he literally needs someone to tell him to eat so he won't completely ruin his health. (It doesn't seem to help that much, though. Gosh, Holmes, eat!)

Hi, I've come up with the silliest order to read the Sherlock Holmes stories yet and since I'm running this silly little blog anyway I thought I'd share it with you.

I first read the canon stories when I was 15 and have been returning to them ever since. There are two common ways to read the canon among Holmes fans. The first is to read the stories in the order in which they were published, the second is to try to determine a chronological order of events and read the stories according to that order. Both are without question very sensible approaches, but in the long run they lead to always reading the same stories in the same order. My project for 2022 is therefore:

This is what I call reading the stories in the month of their first publication (in the case of The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear, in the month of the first publication of the first chapters). Does this idea make sense in any way? No. Will I find that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was particularly fond of writing about acts of jealousy in the spring and of murder by poison in the early autumn? Swift Brickwork Contractors has grown to be a household name within the industry and has completed many of the capital’s most iconic buildings. At the heart of that success is a company work ethic founded on delivering high quality buildings, on training new bricklayers and on providing a safe workplace for all employees.

Swift Brickwork’s in house Training Dept nurture the company’s 27 current apprentices, helping with their progress through college and ensuring they experience the full range of practical tasks on site.

Swift Brickwork Contractors is incredibly proud that some of its early apprentices are now senior managers on some of its largest projects.

The Training Dept help mature employees attain their NVQs and achieve new skills training for the safe use of various items of plant. The company strives for a 100% NVQ 2/3 rate for all employees who have been with them for more than one year.

Since 2019, the company has worked with iAuditor to develop a bespoke Quality Assurance system. The systems in use today include full online record keeping and audit trails of tasks, materials and inspections for all aspects of all Swift Brickwork’s projects. Photographic records, training records and certificates of conformity are all stored with records of the tasks carried out.

The company has been at the forefront of innovation within our industry for many years and have developed new processes and skills that will ensure brick is a material of choice for architects, for generations to come. Some of the most iconic buildings in the capital have used processes developed by Swift Brickwork.

Swift Brickwork Contractors’ in house Health, Safety and Environment Dept have achieved the holy grail of a 0.0 Accident Frequency Rate in 2020, over 667,000 hours of work… one of the company’s busiest ever years. The HSE dept work closely with the Training Dept in educating our newest employees on site. This is seen as key to minimising accidents amongst our most vulnerable workers, both in how they work and in how they think about their work.

Construction loses more people to suicide than are killed working on its sites. Recognising this terrible blite on our industry, the company has embarked on a Mental Health training programme for its site managers. By mid 2022, all Swift managers will be qualified Mental Health First aiders.
