While there are lots of options as to where you can buy a replica of the Yellowjackets Letterman Jacket, they’re not always easily attainable. Last year for halloween I made my own letterman and I figured others could find my process helpful. (The supplies I used were things I already had or were accessible to me but there are other ways to create the same thing. If you have different materials that also work feel free to make suggestions or use them in your process).
HOW TO MAKE A YELLOWJACKETS LETTERMAN JACKET:
Supplies:
• Gold/Navy Letterman jacket
• Printer
• White Printer paper
• Gold Felt
•Chalk
• Heat ‘n Bond
• Embroidery floss in the colors White, Black, Gold and Gray (I ended up needing two packs of white).
• Embroidery needle
• White (or light colored) tissue paper
• White fabric (I used cotton)
• Embroidery hoop
• (Optional) White and Black thread
• Glue stick
Tumblr media
Step 1: Aquire your jacket.
You can do a lot of different things for the plain base jacket. I bought mine off Amazon but if wanted too you could probably sew one or buy one second hand etc. The only specification is that it’s Gold and Navy. It is important to do this first because everything else builds off of this step.
Step 2: Print out designs.
Use the photos I provided below and paste them into a word document. From there you can size them up or down to reach the size that you like for printing. The “Yellowjackets” logo is for the back of the jacket so when I did it I kind of split the photo in half and put it on two different pages. In the end it turned out to be just shy of 13 inches length wise. The round patch goes on the front and mine was 4.25 inches in diameter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Depending on the size of your jacket your patches can be bigger or smaller, but once your happy with the sizing you can then move onto the next step.
Step 3: Gather supplies.
The gold felt is to be used to create the back patch. Because of the size of mine I was able to get a little 50 cent sheet of it (I was able to place the logo at an angle to fit it) but because the patch sizes will be different it’s important to bring your print out of the logo when shopping to make sure you have enough. Most craft / fabric stores should have this in stock. It’s also a good idea to bring your letterman jacket with you to try to color match the shades of gold/yellow as best as possible.
The embroidery hoop, floss, white fabric, and thread are for the front patch as I hand embroidered mine but in theory you could use an embroidery machine or printable fabric sheets to create your patch. If you use these other methods you’ll need different supplies and different instructions that I can’t give.
The Heat ‘n Bond is to iron the patches onto your jacket so they stick (though I’ve had to re iron my back patch because the fibers of the wool make it hard to stick to). It will essentially act as double sided tape.
Step 4: Creating & attaching the back patch
• Cut out a piece of Heat n’ Bond that covers the area where your logo will go.
Tumblr media
(i am using colored paper in the example pictures. Yellow represents the felt. White represents the heat and Bond).
• Once you have the right sized piece of Heat n’ Bond, iron it onto the back of your piece of Gold felt (make sure to follow the instructions on the Heat n’ bond packaging).
•Use your printed template of the logo and cut out the words on the felt. You can cut out the logo on paper first and trace it or attach the paper to the felt and just cut them both at the same time. (I moved the dot on the J down so that it’s still attached just to make it easier but you can do whatever you want).
Tumblr media
• Put on your Letterman and use the chalk to mark where on the back you want the patch to go. For this step it can be helpful to have someone else assist you (though it’s possible to do it yourself).
• Take off the jacket and lay it flat to align the patch up with your chalk markings. Once it is where you want it you can Iron it onto the back of the jacket (according to the instructions on the Heat n’ Bond).
You now have a finished back patch!
Step 5: Creating the front patch.
• Trace the design of the front patch onto tissue paper (I would suggest a dark pen or sharpie so you can see it really well). If you have trouble seeing the design underneath it can be helpful to hold it to a window pane when it’s sunny or another light source. The photo of the logo I included has a white border around the black words but the patch in the show doesn’t have it so I just ignored it. From there you glue the traced tissue paper onto the fabric.
Tumblr media
• Cut out a piece of white fabric big enough for your embroidery hoop and glue the tissue paper sketch onto the fabric.
• Put the fabric/tissue paper into the Embroidery hoop.
Tumblr media
• Thread the needle and start embroidering the design. I found it good to use different techniques on different areas of the patch (long white stitches on the wings versus short ones on the background etc. I also thought it was helpful to embroider in color groupings (so like white all at once or yellow all at once etc. so you don’t have to switch out the floss that much). Save the white outer circle and black outline for last though to help clean everything up. The white and black sewing thread can be used to outline smaller details or neaten up some of the floss.
• Once the patch is done cut out a piece of Heat n’ Bond that covers the back of the patch.
• Put on your jacket and mark with chalk where you want to put the patch. In the show it’s placed by the second from the top button. (See Jackie reference photo at the top of the post).
• Iron on the Heat n’ Bond to the back of the patch (following packet instructions).
• Iron the Patch to the jacket based on your chalk markings.
• You have completed the front patch!
Tumblr media
Above are some photo examples of my jacket (please ignore my messy hair in the left picture, being in the snow got it ruffled up).
Sorry for the long post but I think I got everything covered. I hope you guys found this helpful but if you have any questions about the jacket, my process, or anything else feel free to ask!

How many years of your life have you spent hitting refresh on package-tracking websites? Does it make a material difference to your life whether this box leaves Chicago tonight, when you live absolutely nowhere near Chicago (people reading this from Chicago: please substitute for another distant city?) No, but we want to know what's going on with our shit. Maybe, just maybe, there will be an update, and we can imagine what life is like in the distant land of YUEN LONG INTERNATIONAL PACKAGE SORTING. I bet they have crazy ice cream flavours that we don't get here.
As you might expect, I buy a lot of parts for my hoopties. And, because those cars have been "out of print" for several decades, you have to get creative about where you get those parts. How did a crate full of Quadrajets end up in Vietnam? Not my concern, but as long as I can bumblefuck my way through a conversation roughly tantamount to "I give money, you give old machine parts," I'll get something in the mail that I can strap to my engine.
Will it actually be a Quadrajet? Probably not. Sometimes I accidentally bungle into a CIA dead drop. It's happened more than once that some creepy spies operating in another country send me a box full of top-secret microfiche instead of my car parts, which is always a pain in the ass because even after I throw it into the curbside recycling, I'm still stalked by federal assassins for a few weeks demanding to know where it is. Eventually, after dispatching enough of them using a combination of pure idiot's luck and living in a house stuffed to the gills with rusty and/or electrified garbage, I get to talk to a middle manager, who agrees to let me "off the hook," as it is. And then I still don't have my junk. Zero stars on eBay.
What is important is that these parts or microfiche or nuclear secrets, whatever they are, are sent with tracking numbers. Otherwise, I have nothing to ruthlessly push F5 on when I should be concentrating on something more important, like ordering more parts, or emailing foreign agents why my 318 poly heads haven't moved for a few hours. You better not have gotten captured and tortured to death again. This is why I paid for the insurance.

In 2023, the fast-fashion giant Shein was everywhere. Crisscrossing the globe, airplanes ferried small packages of its ultra-cheap clothing from thousands of suppliers to tens of millions of customer mailboxes in 150 countries. Influencers’ “#sheinhaul” videos advertised the company’s trendy styles on social media, garnering billions of views.
At every step, data was created, collected, and analyzed. To manage all this information, the fast fashion industry has begun embracing emerging AI technologies. Shein uses proprietary machine-learning applications — essentially, pattern-identification algorithms — to measure customer preferences in real time and predict demand, which it then services with an ultra-fast supply chain.
As AI makes the business of churning out affordable, on-trend clothing faster than ever, Shein is among the brands under increasing pressure to become more sustainable, too. The company has pledged to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions no later than 2050.
But climate advocates and researchers say the company’s lightning-fast manufacturing practices and online-only business model are inherently emissions-heavy — and that the use of AI software to catalyze these operations could be cranking up its emissions. Those concerns were amplified by Shein’s third annual sustainability report, released late last month, which showed the company nearly doubled its carbon dioxide emissions between 2022 and 2023.
“AI enables fast fashion to become the ultra-fast fashion industry, Shein and Temu being the fore-leaders of this,” said Sage Lenier, the executive director of Sustainable and Just Future, a climate nonprofit. “They quite literally could not exist without AI.” (Temu is a rapidly rising ecommerce titan, with a marketplace of goods that rival Shein’s in variety, price, and sales.)
In the 12 years since Shein was founded, it has become known for its uniquely prolific manufacturing, which reportedly generated over $30 billion of revenue for the company in 2023. Although estimates vary, a new Shein design may take as little as 10 days to become a garment, and up to 10,000 items are added to the site each day. The company reportedly offers as many as 600,000 items for sale at any given time with an average price tag of roughly $10. (Shein declined to confirm or deny these reported numbers.) One market analysis found that 44 percent of Gen Zers in the United States buy at least one item from Shein every month.
That scale translates into massive environmental impacts. According to the company’s sustainability report, Shein emitted 16.7 million total metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2023 — more than what four coal power plants spew out in a year. The company has also come under fire for textile waste, high levels of microplastic pollution, and exploitative labor practices. According to the report, polyester — a synthetic textile known for shedding microplastics into the environment — makes up 76 percent of its total fabrics, and only 6 percent of that polyester is recycled.
And a recent investigation found that factory workers at Shein suppliers regularly work 75-hour weeks, over a year after the company pledged to improve working conditions within its supply chain. Although Shein’s sustainability report indicates that labor conditions are improving, it also shows that in third-party audits of over 3,000 suppliers and subcontractors, 71 percent received a score of C or lower on the company’s grade scale of A to E — mediocre at best.
Machine learning plays an important role in Shein’s business model. Although Peter Pernot-Day, Shein’s head of global strategy and corporate affairs, told Business Insider last August that AI was not central to its operations, he indicated otherwise during a presentation at a retail conference at the beginning of this year.
“We are using machine-learning technologies to accurately predict demand in a way that we think is cutting edge,” he said. Pernot-Day told the audience that all of Shein’s 5,400 suppliers have access to an AI software platform that gives them updates on customer preferences, and they change what they’re producing to match it in real time.
“This means we can produce very few copies of each garment,” he said. “It means we waste very little and have very little inventory waste.” On average, the company says it stocks between 100 to 200 copies of each item — a stark contrast with more conventional fast-fashion brands, which typically produce thousands of each item per season, and try to anticipate trends months in advance. Shein calls its model “on-demand,” while a technology analyst who spoke to Vox in 2021 called it “real-time” retail.
At the conference, Pernot-Day also indicated that the technology helps the company pick up on “micro trends” that customers want to wear. “We can detect that, and we can act on that in a way that I think we’ve really pioneered,” he said. A designer who filed a recent class action lawsuit in a New York District Court alleges that the company’s AI market analysis tools are used in an “industrial-scale scheme of systematic, digital copyright infringement of the work of small designers and artists,” that scrapes designs off the internet and sends them directly to factories for production.
In an emailed statement to Grist, a Shein spokesperson reiterated Peter Pernot-Day’s assertion that technology allows the company to reduce waste and increase efficiency and suggested that the company’s increased emissions in 2023 were attributable to booming business. “We do not see growth as antithetical to sustainability,” the spokesperson said.
An analysis of Shein’s sustainability report by the Business of Fashion, a trade publication, found that last year, the company’s emissions rose at almost double the rate of its revenue — making Shein the highest-emitting company in the fashion industry. By comparison, Zara’s emissions rose half as much as its revenue. For other industry titans, such as H&M and Nike, sales grew while emissions fell from the year before.
Shein’s emissions are especially high because of its reliance on air shipping, said Sheng Lu, a professor of fashion and apparel studies at the University of Delaware. “AI has wide applications in the fashion industry. It’s not necessarily that AI is bad,” Lu said. “The problem is the essence of Shein’s particular business model.”
Other major brands ship items overseas in bulk, prefer ocean shipping for its lower cost, and have suppliers and warehouses in a large number of countries, which cuts down on the distances that items need to travel to consumers.
According to the company’s sustainability report, 38 percent of Shein’s climate footprint comes from transportation between its facilities and to customers, and another 61 percent come from other parts of its supply chain. Although the company is based in Singapore and has suppliers in a handful of countries, the majority of its garments are produced in China and are mailed out by air in individually addressed packages to customers. In July, the company sent about 900,000 of these to the US every day.
Shein’s spokesperson told Grist that the company is developing a decarbonization road map to address the footprint of its supply chain. Recently, the company has increased the amount of inventory it stores in US warehouses, allowing it to offer American customers quicker delivery times, and increased its use of cargo ships, which are more carbon-efficient than cargo planes.
“Controlling the carbon emissions in the fashion industry is a really complex process,” Lu said, adding that many brands use AI to make their operations more efficient. “It really depends on how you use AI.”
There is research that indicates using certain AI technologies could help companies become more sustainable. “It’s the missing piece,” said Shahriar Akter, an associate dean of business and law at the University of Wollongong in Australia. In May, Akter and his colleagues published a study finding that when fast-fashion suppliers used AI data management software to comply with big brands’ sustainability goals, those companies were more profitable and emitted less. A key use of this technology, Atker says, is to closely monitor environmental impacts, such as pollution and emissions. “This kind of tracking was not available before AI-based tools,” he said.
Shein told Grist it does not use machine-learning data management software to track emissions, which is one of the uses of AI included in Akter’s study. But the company’s much-touted usage of machine-learning software to predict demand and reduce waste is another of the uses of AI included in the research.
Regardless, the company has a long way to go before meeting its goals. Grist calculated that the emissions Shein reportedly saved in 2023 — with measures such as providing its suppliers with solar panels and opting for ocean shipping — amounted to about 3 percent of the company’s total carbon emissions for the year.
Lenier, from Sustainable and Just Future, believes there is no ethical use of AI in the fast-fashion industry. She said that the largely unregulated technology allows brands to intensify their harmful impacts on workers and the environment. “The folks who work in fast-fashion factories are now under an incredible amount of pressure to turn out even more, even faster,” she said.
Lenier and Lu both believe that the key to a more sustainable fashion industry is convincing customers to buy less. Lu said if companies use AI to boost their sales without changing their unsustainable practices, their climate footprints will also grow accordingly. “It’s the overall effect of being able to offer more market-popular items and encourage consumers to purchase more than in the past,” he said. “Of course, the overall carbon impact will be higher.”

hi!! i saw in your tags that you work at a fabric store, and as an occasional fabric store customer i have to ask... are there any Fabric Life Hacks and/or Things Customers Always Ask or Get Wrong that you want to share? i would love the fabric inside scoop!!
Oh yeah! Sorry it took me a bit to respond I just wanted to get everything right! This one has a lot less to do with fabric and more with machine sewing, but I’m always surprised how many people don’t know that changing the needle can really effect how your machine sews through different types of fabric!
I get super passionate about this kind of stuff, so I’m putting the run-down behind a cut….
Sewing machine needles are specialized for different fabrics! The ones that come with your machine will only take you so far! Using the wrong one can sometimes break your needle and damage your fabric!!! The nice part about sewing machine needles is that unless you’ve got a REALLY old machine (like anything before 1900’s) you can just go out and buy any old brand of machine needle.
Most needles fall under several different types! Including: Universal needles, jeans/denim needles, ballpoint needles, microtex needles, and leather needles! I’m probably forgetting some and I KNOW that people and companies have different names for them.
Important rule of thumb! The bigger the number on the package the thicker the fabric is meant to be! I’m gonna use a Shmetz package as an example because they’re the kind I’m usually explaining at work.
Tumblr media
Highlighted in red is where you look for the needle number! This one is a multi-pack that has couple of weights, I recommend getting these kind packs if you’re just starting out and don’t plan to sew and specific fabrics!
Microtex needles: for sewing lightweight fabric! They’re thinner and sharper so sewing with them will leave less of a hole in your fabric
Universal needles: good for sewing pretty much any medium weight fabrics! These guys will be labeled with numbers like 11/75 and 14/90
Jeans/denim needles: also sometimes called upholstery needles! These are the guys that you want to use for when you’re sewing thicker fabric or lots of layers! Don’t underestimate how much this will expand how the amount layers of fabric you can sew through!
Ballpoint needles: these are a whole other type with it’s own scale of weights! These needles are for sewing with knit fabrics, they’ve got a smooth tip that means it won’t potentially cut threads and fuzz the knits! If you don’t have access to a serger you can still sew with knits, just use a zigzag stitch and sew over it a couple of times!
Leather needles: these are like the jeans/denim needles but specifically for leather! It might just be that whatever leather you’re sewing is too thick for your machine, but a leather needle can go a long way to making it possible to sew leather on a regular sewing machine! Leather is a strange beast to sew
Bonus round! Chrome needles: just a fancy term for needles that are made out of a higher quality metal! They’re supposed to last longer and be more sturdy but if there’s a difference I haven’t seen one. Some people swear by them though!
And that was…. Sewing tips hour! I feel like I have to give the rundown on needles to at least one customer a day, so this is something I’ve got the whole spiel for! Apologies in advance if you’re a hand-sewer or if already knew all of this junk!

Machine Learning: A Comprehensive Overview
Machine Learning (ML) is a subfield of synthetic intelligence (AI) that offers structures with the capacity to robotically examine and enhance from revel in without being explicitly programmed. Instead of using a fixed set of guidelines or commands, device studying algorithms perceive styles in facts and use the ones styles to make predictions or decisions. Over the beyond decade, ML has transformed how we have interaction with generation, touching nearly each aspect of our every day lives — from personalised recommendations on streaming services to actual-time fraud detection in banking.

Machine learning algorithms
What is Machine Learning?
At its center, gadget learning entails feeding facts right into a pc algorithm that allows the gadget to adjust its parameters and improve its overall performance on a project through the years. The more statistics the machine sees, the better it usually turns into. This is corresponding to how humans study — through trial, error, and revel in.
Arthur Samuel, a pioneer within the discipline, defined gadget gaining knowledge of in 1959 as “a discipline of take a look at that offers computers the capability to study without being explicitly programmed.” Today, ML is a critical technology powering a huge array of packages in enterprise, healthcare, science, and enjoyment.
Types of Machine Learning
Machine studying can be broadly categorised into 4 major categories:
1. Supervised Learning
For example, in a spam electronic mail detection device, emails are classified as "spam" or "no longer unsolicited mail," and the algorithm learns to classify new emails for this reason.
Common algorithms include:
Linear Regression
Logistic Regression
Support Vector Machines (SVM)
Decision Trees
Random Forests
Neural Networks
2. Unsupervised Learning
Unsupervised mastering offers with unlabeled information. Clustering and association are commonplace obligations on this class.
Key strategies encompass:
K-Means Clustering
Hierarchical Clustering
Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
Autoencoders
three. Semi-Supervised Learning
It is specifically beneficial when acquiring categorised data is highly-priced or time-consuming, as in scientific diagnosis.
Four. Reinforcement Learning
Reinforcement mastering includes an agent that interacts with an surroundings and learns to make choices with the aid of receiving rewards or consequences. It is broadly utilized in areas like robotics, recreation gambling (e.G., AlphaGo), and independent vehicles.
Popular algorithms encompass:
Q-Learning
Deep Q-Networks (DQN)
Policy Gradient Methods
Key Components of Machine Learning Systems
1. Data
Data is the muse of any machine learning version. The pleasant and quantity of the facts directly effect the performance of the version. Preprocessing — consisting of cleansing, normalization, and transformation — is vital to make sure beneficial insights can be extracted.
2. Features
Feature engineering, the technique of selecting and reworking variables to enhance model accuracy, is one of the most important steps within the ML workflow.
Three. Algorithms
Algorithms define the rules and mathematical fashions that help machines study from information. Choosing the proper set of rules relies upon at the trouble, the records, and the desired accuracy and interpretability.
4. Model Evaluation
Models are evaluated the use of numerous metrics along with accuracy, precision, consider, F1-score (for class), or RMSE and R² (for regression). Cross-validation enables check how nicely a model generalizes to unseen statistics.
Applications of Machine Learning
Machine getting to know is now deeply incorporated into severa domain names, together with:
1. Healthcare
ML is used for disorder prognosis, drug discovery, customized medicinal drug, and clinical imaging. Algorithms assist locate situations like cancer and diabetes from clinical facts and scans.
2. Finance
Fraud detection, algorithmic buying and selling, credit score scoring, and client segmentation are pushed with the aid of machine gaining knowledge of within the financial area.
3. Retail and E-commerce
Recommendation engines, stock management, dynamic pricing, and sentiment evaluation assist businesses boom sales and improve patron revel in.
Four. Transportation
Self-riding motors, traffic prediction, and route optimization all rely upon real-time gadget getting to know models.
6. Cybersecurity
Anomaly detection algorithms help in identifying suspicious activities and capacity cyber threats.
Challenges in Machine Learning
Despite its rapid development, machine mastering still faces numerous demanding situations:
1. Data Quality and Quantity
Accessing fantastic, categorised statistics is often a bottleneck. Incomplete, imbalanced, or biased datasets can cause misguided fashions.
2. Overfitting and Underfitting
Overfitting occurs when the model learns the education statistics too nicely and fails to generalize.
Three. Interpretability
Many modern fashions, specifically deep neural networks, act as "black boxes," making it tough to recognize how predictions are made — a concern in excessive-stakes regions like healthcare and law.
4. Ethical and Fairness Issues
Algorithms can inadvertently study and enlarge biases gift inside the training facts. Ensuring equity, transparency, and duty in ML structures is a growing area of studies.
5. Security
Adversarial assaults — in which small changes to enter information can fool ML models — present critical dangers, especially in applications like facial reputation and autonomous riding.
Future of Machine Learning
The destiny of system studying is each interesting and complicated. Some promising instructions consist of:
1. Explainable AI (XAI)
Efforts are underway to make ML models greater obvious and understandable, allowing customers to believe and interpret decisions made through algorithms.
2. Automated Machine Learning (AutoML)
AutoML aims to automate the stop-to-cease manner of applying ML to real-world issues, making it extra reachable to non-professionals.
3. Federated Learning
This approach permits fashions to gain knowledge of across a couple of gadgets or servers with out sharing uncooked records, enhancing privateness and efficiency.
4. Edge ML

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Tumblr media
In 2005, Tim Burton directed an adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was generally well-reviewed and made nearly $500 million at the box office. I’ll call it a good film. Watching 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, you can understand why someone felt like it could use a remake/the book needed to be adapted again. That said, the artistic decisions at the writing, musical, performance and tonal level accompany all of the weird “of the era” choices. Combined, they make this movie the kind that transcends the decades.
Poor, kind Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) lives in a small house with his mother (Diana Sowle) and his four grandparents. One day, legendary candy maker Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) announces he has hidden five golden tickets in his world-famous Wonka Bars. The children who find them will be allowed access to his mysterious factory and receive a lifetime supply of chocolate. As the world madly scrambles to find the golden tickets, Charlie continues to believe he has a chance of finding one too.
Tumblr media
The premise implies it, but Charlie does eventually find one of the golden tickets and he invites his beloved Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson) to join him on the factory tour. I’m still labeling this fact as a spoiler because it’s about a third to halfway through the movie before Charlie finds his golden ticket. A sizeable chunk of the running time is dedicated to showing our hero as kind, good-hearted and full of hope despite his circumstances, while the other people who find the tickets… are exactly who you think they would be. The film teases you and builds the anticipation. Charlie is poor. He has to scratch together the money needed to buy a single Wonka bar while some of his classmates open over a hundred. There’s a cruelty to the fact that any other year, a single bar for his birthday would be the most wonderful thing Charlie could’ve dreamed of but this year, the bar is a disappointment because it doesn't contain a shiny invitation. You want Charlie to see the inside of that factory because you like him and you know what it would mean to the boy. It’s equally important that he finds one because everyone else who's going doesn’t deserve to go like he does.
Until we get to the factory, director Mel Stuart frequently cuts to gags showing us the extent of the globe's Wonkamania. Scientists have developed machines to find tickets without opening the wrappers. As the worldwide supply begins to dry up, sealed boxes of Wonka bars are sold at auction houses for ridiculous sums. We even see a woman whose husband has been kidnapped hesitating to pay the ransom: her stash of Wonka bars.
Is it a surprise that the children who find the Golden Tickets are all loathsome in their own ways? There’s the gluttonous Augustus Gloop (Michael Böllner). He loves chocolate but just looking at him constantly stuffing his face makes you feel a little ill. Next is Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole). She got her ticket because her father bought millions of bars and dedicated the entire staff of his peanut factory to rip the packaging open until they found it. She's the definition of "spoiled". The last two children, chronic gum-chewer Violet Beauregarde (Denise Nickerson), and television-obsessed Mike Teevee (Paris Themmen) are brats consumed by their bad habits. I guess there’s nothing THAT bad about chewing gum the way Violet does (though her obsession is pretty gross) or the way Mike obsesses over his shows (boy does his rotten attitude make him detestable, however) but they both give you a headache. There’s something pretty funny about the fact that some of these kids’ “deadly sins” are so juvenile and you’re happy to see all of them taught a lesson.
The odd thing about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is that there aren’t any character arcs. The bad children are taught lessons but in the process, they leave the factory tour and the movie. Charlie is already the person he’s meant to be so what the film does is introduce him and the world outside the factory, introduce the other children, then whittle down the cast as we explore the chocolate-making process and get to know Willy Wonka. That’s an unusual structure but it suits the film well. We anticipate the inevitable even before realizing their lessons come with musical numbers.
The competition for which piece of music is the best is fierce. Despite going on to become a hit after its rendition by Sammy Davis, Jr. and fitting in the movie perfectly, I don’t think The Candy Man is as memorable as (I've Got a) Golden Ticket but is the latter’s ability to stick in your mind due to the music & lyrics, or because of the scene that introduces it? The real contenders are Pure Imagination and the Oompa Loompa song, which gets my vote. It’s got an iconic melody, memorable lyrics and has the added bonus of being easy to expand upon or parody. It’s another reason to look forward to the bad kids misbehaving.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to say about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Visually, it’s not as slick as it could be and there are times when it’s so strange (that scary tunnel ride) that you can understand why someone said “We should try this again”. The thing is, the strange choices aren’t bugs; they’re features. Yes, it is occasionally unexpectedly weird/scary but if the movie was nothing but sweet songs and bright-eyed children learning nice lessons, it wouldn’t be any fun. The moments when Willy Wonka is a little bit nasty towards his bratty guests mirrors the way you feel about them. The release of 2023's Wonka only makes the film's evergreen quality more apparent. There's two ways, the "traditional", and the "new" (how I purchased this order). The traditional is purchasing through their JP/domestic website via a proxy, while the new is shopping via their global website.
Now, it might sound like a no brainer for international people to shop via the global site, but as I'll explain later on there's a few cases/reasons where using a proxy is the more reasonable, and even times cheaper option.
Finding Items
Tumblr media
Well, it's no CDJapan, I'll say that. Suruga-Ya's global website is propped up by almost exclusively Machine Translation. That means that the translations for some items can be really weird, like Yuta Okkotsu becoming Yuta Otsubone. Similarly, Jujutsu Kaisen gets translated to Sorcery Fight, and the translation struggles with correctly translating names (specifically those that are hiragana/katakana)
Tips For Better Searches
Limit number of keywords (instead of Yuta Okkotuse, just Yuta)
Search for JP names and literal TLs (e.g Sorcery Fight instead of Jujutsu Kaisen) as well
Search using the JP website, find the desired item, copy the item ID and search on the global site using that (more info later)
What Can You Buy?
Tumblr media
The answer to that question is, "pretty much everything under the sun". They carry everything so long as it's not illegal to import/export. Models, figures, tapestries, art books, manga, acrylics, keychains, the list just goes on and on. About the only thing that is very clearly absent is R18 Doujins (regular ones are still available).
One thing that's really nice is that they've created "storefronts" for popular brands/titles. Pokémon, Studio Ghibli, One Piece, and Sailor Moon are just a few of the examples present on the website. It can be really helpful when you're a fan of something specific like that considering how challenging searching for something can be.
Deals and Coupons
Tumblr media
This is the big one, the make or break for pricing. Suruga-Ya will, more often than not, have a promotional campaign going on for the global site. In fact, in the last 2 months there's been 5 weekends of free shipping. It's a crazy deal, and about the only way that international people will order from them.
If you want to keep up with promotional material though, they only post it on the website as an announcement, or on their Facebook page.
Tumblr media
Warnings and Forewords
Buying from anywhere online comes with a caveat, the price is high, the shipping is slow, so on and so forth. Suruga-Ya is no exception to that and features four aspects that potential buyers should be aware of before making a purchase.
1. Commission Fee
Tumblr media
All purchases are subject to a commission fee of 500Yen. Not terrible by any means, but it's an extra couple of bucks on an order that you might not have been aware of initially. To put it in perspective, Buyee takes out a "service fee" every time you make a purchase through their proxy service. It's effectively standard practice for these international orders, and you could argue that it takes the place of "tax" when shopping with them.
2. No Protective Packaging/Package Filler
Tumblr media
What you see is what you get. This was all that was in box 1 of my order. It does keep the items from moving around too much during shipping, but it still doesn't do anything to prevent damage or any harm coming to the items. It's especially an issue given that Suruga-Ya's boxes aren't super well fitted to the orders that fill them. I think when ordering cheap stuff like I did it's not a major concern, but for stuff like figures or other delicate items it's an issue. I'm hoping that they'll add a protective packaging option at checkout in the future for that reason.
3. Prices Differ Between Websites
Tumblr media
Once more, this is a common practice, and this is why proxy services can be worth it. They're not massive differences, but it certainly begins to accrue as a "foreigner tax". Furthermore, item availability differs between the sites. That is, you can find some things on the JP site, but not the global one. I reached out to customer support regarding that, and they stated that they plan to bring all legally importable/exportable items over to the global site, it's just that it will take time.
4. Items Are Used
Tumblr media
For people that have done proxy orders before, that's not any sort of surprise. But for some items it's worth taking note of, especially in terms of price. For example, say that instead of 2,250Yen this art book was more like 2,500Yen. Well, as it turns out, the retail price on Amazon Japan for the art book is a hair over 2,500Yen (2,530). In those cases, buyers may want to look at other options for the item in "new" condition elsewhere if they're wary of used items.
However, "used" in Japan is very different from "used" in somewhere like North America. Night and day, really. Later on I'll show what I got, and hopefully reaffirm buyers that "used" can basically mean "like new" with stuff like art books, and that they're absolutely worth purchasing.
Shipping
Tumblr media
It's fast, damn fast at that. With free shipping that's great, but for people looking to save money when there's not an active campaign you might struggle as DHL and EMS are the only shipping options offered by Suruga-Ya. No surface or sea mail to save a good chunk of change, so definitely be aware of the cost of shipping when making an order without a promo to cover the cost somewhat.
Packaging
Tumblr media
I got two packages (because I ended up making two orders, also please ignore the weird stretch Tumblr applied to the image), and these are my short form thoughts on it:
Boxes are not sturdy/solid and have caved and dented in a few spots
Items are secure, but not necessarily safe
Box sizes can be too large for some orders, allowing them to move around too much
No reinforcement to corners isn't great
Overall, you get what you pay for, and for free shipping it's not the worst. Certainly not what I'd want to be paying for when paying shipping though.
My Purchases
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As per usual, I largely got art books and some JP manga I've been collecting. Though more important than that is the elephant in the room. All of these items are used, but for the vast majority you'd never know. A lot of them came in plastic bags that were sealed, rathe typical of JP items which is really nice. Great condition, no signs of wear, and proper storage, it's hard to really call these things "used" all that often. However, there are exceptions.
Used Items
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I received two items that could be considered "used" in the typical sense. The first is some volumes of manga that had yellowed due to age or exposure to direct sunlight, and the other is a crease/bend in the corner of an art book. Neither are severe damages or deal breakers (for me) at their price, but they're things to take note of as not everything will be perfect. Another thing to note though is I have no way of knowing if the damage to the art book was there from the beginning or happened during transit due to lack of protection.
My Experience
Keeping it short, I'll summarize my thoughts on the order from start to finish.
Searching and filtering isn't as easy as it should be
Prices are really good, but lack of description (both in regards to content and condition) can deter potential buyers
Checkout process needs some work (can't get a shipping estimate until you provide a payment method)
Shipping is incredibly quick
Packaging is questionable and cause for concern with more delicate items
Customer service is nice, but accessing them is odd (only through apps like WhatsApp or Line)
Stickers placed directly on books is a massive no-no
Overall, I'd buy from them again with conditions.
Why/When To Buy
There's a few requirements to really make Suruga-Ya worth it. Deals, more specifically free shipping (usually), is a must to make the purchase worthwhile. You could probably get away with paying shipping and getting a good deal if they JP prices weren't cheaper than the global site, but they are. Because of that, the "extra cost" can add up quite quick if there's not a sale or something to offset it. Continuing on the topic of "extra cost", their ability between sites (currently) differs. Because of that, the quantity of items you can order differs as well, which can lead to "smaller" order sizes which can increase the relative cost due to shipping. And lastly, there's no order storage. If the product lists were consistent that wouldn't be an issue, but we're dealing with used items, these things come and go quite frequently. Really want an item but can't fill out a full order? Better hope that the item doesn't sell.
So, all in all, the conditions for buying from the Suruga-Ya global site are:
Deals/free shipping
Enough items to meet reasonable order size to save money (if no free shipping)
Pretty simple, but still important to remember
In The End
If you can field a sizeable order from the global website and there's a deal running, it's probably the best deal you'll find (but still check). If not though, look at buying through the JP site via proxy. There's less stress in maximizing the order, you can sit on the items in warehouse, and you can even combine with other sites. You just won't get free shipping. And I really do have to stress that that's the biggest selling point for buying from the global site. So keep your eyes out for those specials!

Retro computer emulation/virtualization resources
Not too long ago, it was one of my hobbies to recreate and emulate old machines and try to use them in a somewhat 'legit' way in order to experience how using them in an accurate time-period might have felt like. While it's always better to use a real machine, it's also important to note that time-accurate machines are essentially a 'ticking bomb'. Some of the electronics inside can go bad at any given time, like capacitors, and other critical components might also go bad due to humidity, moisture in the air, changes in temperature, etc. Plus, they are not always cheap and they take space that you might not have.
This is why I prefer using emulators and virtualization software in order to virtualize a time-period accurate machine that I can use. This is the software I found that I like the most, and what systems I use them for.
DOSbox-X
Tumblr media
This is a modified version of DOSBox that includes support for multiple video devices including 3dfx emulation (Voodoo), networking, and even printer support (emulated, but AFAIK it only prints in black and white). It's perfect for MS-DOS and Windows (1-3.11) emulation. Technically you could even install Windows 95 in it.
86-box
Tumblr media
This is the way to go if you want to emulate old retro systems. No questions. The best part of it is how flexible it is. You can select the motherboard, the processor you want to emulate, the video card, you can also enable 3dfx support up to the Voodoo 2 (but it also emulates a Voodoo3 and the Banshee), sound card, literally every detail. It's like building a PC, but virtually. And it has hardware from the old 8086 IBM PCs to more modern Pentium 2 machines. It also has network and printer support.
The downside is that since it's low-level emulation, you need a 'beefy' CPU with very good single thread performance in order for more modern systems like Windows 9x and ME to run more smoothly. Another flaw is that for some reason the FP emulation for older processors doesn't work properly for some reason, so you might prefer to use DOSBox-X if you want DOS emulation. The 3dfx emulation is also 'so-so' and not very great, but it works.
It also requires valid ROMs, but you can search for a valid ROMset online (check Github) if you want to use it. For legal reasons, I can't provide links to them, but they are not hard to find.
VMWare Workstation Player
Tumblr media
I choose VMWare over other virtualization solutions because of it's graphic drivers capable of running relatively new games from the mid 2000s, and because unlike VirtualBox (since version 6) it still supports old Windows versions, including XP, 9x, ME and old NT systems.
Broadcom wants you to buy a license for the Pro version so they hide the links to the free Workstation Player version. But they are still available and they even release updates once in a while (yes, it's free of charge).
In the link I'm providing, go to the 'player' folder and select the latest version (higher number, now it's 17.6.1) and your system to download VMWare Workstation Player. Then go to the 'ws' folder and select the same version and system, but then select 'packages' to download a matching copy of vmware tools.
Finding software
If you need software, there are three places you need to look for. One is archive.org, the other is WinWorld PC, and the other is Vetusware (requires an account). I can't provide links so search for them on your own. I also browse sites like oldversion.com, but I don't trust these too much, so go at your own risk (or better yet, don't). Naturally you should always buy the software you use, whenever it's possible, and use backups of your legally owned software.
Did you like this post?
I will make more posts in the future about how to set up these emulated machines and how I work with them.

Why trust professional rice manufacturers for quality?
Tumblr media
Rice isn’t just a staple food – it’s a cultural cornerstone for billions of people around the world. Whether it’s the aromatic Basmati from India or the sticky rice from Southeast Asia, the quality of rice can make or break a meal. But have you ever wondered what it takes to ensure that the rice on your plate is of the highest standard? This is where professional rice makers come in. In this blog, we will explore why it’s important to trust experienced rice exporters and suppliers for quality, consistency, and reliability.
How professional rice makers ensure superior quality
When it comes to rice production, experience and expertise are non-negotiable. Professional rice makers, especially renowned Indian rice manufacturers, have decades of knowledge in rice cultivation, processing, and packaging. They understand the nuances of different rice varieties from long-grain Basmati to short-grain Japonica and know how to handle each type to retain its unique characteristics.
For example, Basmati rice requires specific growing conditions and careful milling to maintain its aroma and long grains. Professional producers invest in skilled agronomists and food scientists who ensure that every grain meets stringent quality standards. This level of expertise is difficult to replicate, making trusted rice suppliers the preferred choice for consumers and businesses alike.
Advanced technology and processes for consistent rice quality
Modern rice production is no longer just about traditional farming methods. Professional rice producers leverage advanced technology to maintain consistency and quality. From state-of-the-art milling machines to optical sorters that remove impurities, these technologies ensure that only the best grains make it to your plate.
For example, color sorters use high-resolution cameras to detect and remove discolored or damaged grains to ensure uniformity in every batch. Additionally, automated packaging systems prevent contamination and increase rice shelf life. These innovations are the hallmarks of reliable rice exporters who prioritize quality over quantity.
Certifications and Standards: Why They Matter in Rice Production
One of the main reasons to trust professional rice manufacturers is that they adhere to international certifications and standards. Reputable rice suppliers often hold certifications such as ISO, FDA, and FSSAI, which guarantee that their products are safe, clean, and of high quality.
For example, Indian rice manufacturers who export to global markets must adhere to strict regulations set by importing countries. These certifications not only build trust but also ensure that the rice you eat is free from harmful chemicals and contaminants. When you buy from certified rice exporters, you are investing in peace of mind.
Sustainability and Ethical Practices in Rice Manufacturing
In today’s world, sustainability is a growing concern for consumers. Professional rice manufacturers are increasingly adopting eco-friendly practices to reduce their environmental footprint. From water-saving farming techniques to biodegradable packaging, these efforts contribute to a healthier planet.
For example, many Indian rice manufacturers are adopting organic farming methods, which avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. This not only benefits the environment but also produces healthy, chemical-free rice. By choosing the best rice suppliers committed to sustainability, you support ethical practices that benefit both people and the planet.
The Role of Professional Rice Manufacturers in Global Trade
Rice is one of the most traded commodities in the world, and professional rice manufacturers play a vital role in global supply chains. Whether it's meeting the demand for Basmati rice in the Middle East or supplying Japonica rice to Japan, these manufacturers ensure that high-quality rice reaches every corner of the world.
Reliable rice exporters have strong logistics networks that guarantee timely delivery without compromising on quality. They work closely with farmers to ensure fair pricing and ethical sourcing, building long-term relationships that benefit everyone.
When it comes to something as essential as rice, settling for less than the best is not an option. Professional rice producers bring expertise, technology, certifications and consistency, ensuring every grain meets the highest standards. Whether you are a consumer or a businessperson, trusting reputable rice suppliers is the key to enjoying safe, delicious and ethically produced quality rice.
So, the next time you go to buy rice, remember that behind every grain is a story of dedication, innovation and trust. Choose wisely and enjoy the difference that quality makes.

One point: in "manual" offices, we don't have the codes to scan. Our machines are like angry coworkers who hate each other and never talk: the credit/debit machines, the postage meters, and the scales are all separate technology, so we can't print either a survey code or a tracking number onto your receipt. For tracking, we give you a separate little label to take home. For the surveys, please either call or go online to https://www.usps.com/help/contact-us.htm. We don't get as many reviews because they take longer, and that affects our funding. The assholes in charge have been viciously cutting manual and other rural offices and routes to "lower costs" because they don't see (or care) that we service some of the most vulnerable people in the country. Manual offices need good reviews as well.
Besides all that, please, please, please just use the USPS. Please buy stamps, change your address, mail packages, whatever you can. Please help me keep my job and keep a important service going, despite the right's attempts to destroy and privatize a vital institution as old as the country itself.
The US Postal Service
I am going to ask you all to do a small but important thing. When you go to the post office to mail a package or buy stamps or shipping supplies, get a receipt.
At the bottom of the receipt is a link and a QR code to fill out a short survey about your "customer satisfaction" with the post office. You are going to fill out that (it takes less than two minutes) and you are going to give them a glowing review each time!
Why? Because they are looking for reasons to make budget cuts despite the USPS being in the constitution and a valuable public service. So we are going to make it unequivocal that we like the postal service.
Because we do!
They send medicine cheaply, they take ballots for voting (which Republicans hate). They are the only shipping service in many rural areas. AND they are basically all that is keeping UPS, FedEx etc's prices down. Privatization means everything will be more expensive.
The post office is ours. It's our right. And the workers there are also being treated like shit right now. So support them in this very simple, easy way. And do this every single time you go there. Please. (And please reblog this. Let's overwhelmingly flood the system with positive feedback.)

How to Source the Best Spices for the USA Market
Spices have always played a key role in the American food industry. From local restaurants and catering businesses to large-scale food manufacturers and health product companies, the demand for premium spices is rising every year. Whether you're in the retail, wholesale, or food production sector, finding the right spice suppliers and exporters can make a big difference in quality, pricing, and customer satisfaction.
In this blog, we’ll discuss how businesses in the USA can source high-quality spices such as turmeric, cumin, cardamom, ginger powder, coriander seeds, and paprika. We’ll also look at why these are among the best spices for USA market demand and how to choose the right supply partners.
Tumblr media
Why the USA Market Needs High-Quality Spices
The USA has a diverse population with culinary influences from all over the world—Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Asian, and more. This multicultural food culture drives the need for both common and exotic spices. As more people seek natural flavors, healthier food options, and unique dishes, spice usage continues to rise in both homes and commercial kitchens.
Let’s break down some of the most in-demand spices in the USA and what to look for in a reliable supplier or exporter.
Tumblr media
1. Turmeric Supplier in USA
Turmeric is widely known for its bright yellow color and health benefits. It is used in cooking, health supplements, and cosmetic products. If you're looking for a turmeric supplier in USA, make sure the supplier offers product quality that is high in curcumin content, which is the compound responsible for its health benefits.
It's important that turmeric is well-dried, free from additives, and properly packaged to preserve freshness. A good supplier will also provide lab-tested results and certifications upon request.
Tumblr media
