The Guanyin Temple of Spofford Alley

Contemporary accounts place the Guanyin Temple (觀音廟, pinyin: Guanyin miao; canto: “Goon Yum miu”) on Spofford Alley (新呂宋巷  = canto: “sun leuih sun hong”) at the southwest corner of the alley’s intersection with Washington Street.  

Spofford Alley in 1885. (Detail from the Special Committee of the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco, July 1885, from the Cooper Chow collection of the Chinese Historical Society of America.).  If the Guanyin temple had been established above one of the storefronts at the southwest corner of Spofford and Washington Street, the City of San Francisco’s surveyors (whose map only purported to show groundfloor uses), failed to note the temple’s existence.  When the Chinese settled this part of the neighborhood, they replaced its former Spanish residents.  Ross Alley was given the name of Gow Louie Sun Hong, or old Spanish Alley. According to former police chief Jesse B. Cook, “Spofford Alley was another alley from which the Spaniards were crowded out; this was called Sun Louie Sun Hong [新呂宋巷  = “sun leuih sun hong” ], or new Spanish Alley. . .”

According to Yong Chen (in the book Chinese San Francisco, 1850-1943:  A Trans-Pacific Community), the Guanyin Temple “was one of the first Chinese temples in the city.  In 1886 numerous Chinese organizations and stores offered money to renovate it.”

In 1892, Frederic J. Masters, D.D., published an article about his tour of the “fifteen heathen temples” found in San Francisco’s Chinatown.  He described the Guanyin Temple as follows:  

“The most popular goddess of the Chinese pantheon is Kwan Yum, the Chinese Notre Dame . . . Her shrine is found up a dingy staircase on the southwest corner of Spofford alley and Washington streets.  In this smoky loft, with its rudely carved image and grimy vestments, one sees nothing of the beautifully chiseled statue, that image of repose that we have often seen in the Ocean Banner Monastery, on the banks of the Pearl River.  . . .” [海幢寺; mando: Hai-chuang si;  canto: “Hoi Duhng See”]

“In the Spofford-alley temple,” Masters wrote, “are found the shrines of some twenty other gods and goddesses, the principal being the Grand Duke of Peace, the God of Medicine, and Pan Kung, a celebrated Prime minister of the Sung dynasty.  The funniest discovery in this temple was that of Tsai Tin Tai Shing [Qitian dasheng, 齊天大聖; canto: “sai tin dai sing”].  He is a beatified monkey in the image of a man.”

As with other deities, the pioneers of Chinese California brought Guanyin, Guan Yin or Kuan Yin ( 觀音; pinyin: Guānyīn; canto: “Goon Yum”) with them to North America.  The Chinese name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means “[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World."  She is the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion and the East Asian equivalent of Avalokiteśvara.  Other Eastern religions, including Chinese folk religion, adopted her for veneration.  Jesuit missionaries to China are credited with first referring to her as the "goddess of mercy" or the mercy goddess.  

Arnold Genthe’s photograph of the temple’s entrance on Spofford Alley confirmed the continued operation of the Guanyin temple until the destruction of the entire block in 1906.  Unlike other photographers of his day, however, Genthe displayed less interest in the temple’s entrance and, instead, aimed his camera north on Spofford, across Washington Street, and continuing up Church Court or alley.  (Church Court partially bisected the short block of Washington Street that ran west from Ross Alley to Stockton Street).  

The image records the camera’s eye following a pedestrian walking north on Spofford in the same direction as the figure seen walking up Church.  Two individuals with hands behind their back read wall notices in the left foreground and right side of the frame.  (The wooden box mounted on the wall to the left of the frame served as a receptacle for waste paper from old notices and ads pasted to the brick exterior.)  

The photograph, however, centers on two workers leaning against the Spofford side of the corner building; the nearest figure appears to have a cigarette in hand.  Genthe underexposed his print for his book, Old Chinatown, to create the shadows that insinuate a sinister quality to the life of this small street.  By so doing, Genthe advanced his greater interest in the esthetic premise of Chinatown as a foreign and threatening place.  His choice of camera angle links a temple doorway with the individuals facing out from the building and appearing to look east down Washington Street -- lookouts for potential threats from police or rival tongs to the prostitution or opium den operations.  In contrast, the lighter print from the Library of Congress shown below indicates a wider lens angle and creates a much less dangerous atmosphere.

PGA TOUR’s Sam Saunders to Join LPGA’s Stacy Lewis as Ambassadors for Inaugural Spirit Charity Challenge at Whispering Pines Golf Club

The Spirit Golf Association and Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas confirm that PGA TOUR professional Sam Saunders will serve as an ambassador for the inaugural Spirit Charity Challenge to be held on Monday, October 7.  He will lead the men’s Spirit alumni, while marquee LPGA player Stacy Lewis heads the competing women. 

The Spirit Charity Challenge, announced by Whispering Pines owner and founder Corby Robertson, Jr., is designed to bring back notable alumni who represented their country in a prior Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship.  Returning invited players will compete for a $100,000 prize that will be donated to the winner’s charity of choice.

To date, the following Spirit alumni have been invited to compete in the Spirit Charity Challenge:  Paula Creamer (USA), Lexi Thompson (USA), Lorena Ochoa (Mexico), Pernilla Lindberg (Sweden), Gaby Lopez (Mexico), Bronte Law (England), C.T. Pan (Chinese Taipei), Roberto Diaz (Mexico), Ben Martin (USA) and Austin Ernst (USA).  A complete roster of names for both teams will be announced at a later date. 

“We are very honored to have Sam Saunders, PGA TOUR player and grandson of the legendary Arnold Palmer, join us to lead the men’s alum for this new event,” said Corby Robertson, Jr.  “Sam will help us secure a great field of PGA TOUR players to match the outstanding LPGA stars that Stacy Lewis is attracting.  We believe many of our alumni from The Spirit International will enjoy returning to Whispering Pines and playing for their charities.  It will be a fun reunion to celebrate their amateur careers and create excitement for the 2019 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship to be held on November 7-9 at Whispering Pines.”

“I am so excited to be coming back to Whispering Pines to play in the Spirit Charity Challenge,” said Sam Saunders.  “Playing in 2005 in The Spirit International was one of the highlights of my amateur career, and the experience was invaluable to my success on tour, playing against so many international players.  To now get to come back and be part of a fun event, and have the opportunity to support charity is very special to me and a huge honor to be a part of.” 

The Spirit Charity Challenge is scheduled one month prior to the biennial Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, an Olympic-like experience for top ranked amateurs (40 men and 40 women) from 20 countries who compete for gold medals in a 54-hole tournament.  The event was established in 2001 at Whispering Pines and since then Spirit alumni have won over 650 professional tournaments including 22 major championships. The Spirit Golf Association is creating this unique event where PGA TOUR and LPGA professionals play together and compete for charity.  The event will highlight former Spirit International alumni from around the world who have gone on to successful careers as professional golfers.
