recs for good at job movies!

- baby driver 2017 is about an extremely good driver/getaway driver (im not entirely sure where this fits in the heist vs con/crime stipulation but the fact that the main character/expert is unwillingly in the situation, is "just" the getaway driver, + has his own personal storyline going on outside The Crimes makes me feel like its not the kind of Now You See Me type things you're not looking for. it doesn't have much technical car stuff but the car chase scenes are extensive & well-shot and showcase a lot of the trickery, strategy, and quick decision-making behind getaway driving. said MC has huge autism vibes like almost to a DSM symptom checklist extent 😭 and an explicit hearing condition)

- nope 2022 has a very interesting presentation of this both through the lens of a clearly talented horse trainer/cowboy + a renowned but jaded filmmaker

- i have not watched this film yet, but temple grandin 2010 seems interesting — biopic about autistic woman + autistic advocate who became a leading scientist in humane livestock handling (i see its on your watchlist on LB actually!)

(lol this is making me realize how few of these films ive seen that are Actually Good, how many of these films are autism-related, and also how good of a hook "abnormally good at [random thing]" is, especially the more random it is, regardless the surrounding story becomes)

Movie recommendations about people in specific professions being good at their jobs?

I LOOOOOOOVED Nope (2022) and I definitely agree on the expertise - I've got a partly written essay from '22 all about autism and ADHD in the films and especially how OJ's autism and his own personal aversion to eye contact changes his approach to animal behaviour compared to many who focus a lot more on how the animals or the perception of being chosen or being "special" to animals, et cetera, but I've not finished it because I'm the worst.

Temple Grandin is on my list and I'm super excited about it, I actually initially put it on my list because I saw some fucking YouTube shorts, but several people have recommended it to me since!

Baby Driver was on my list before, but I've felt really sensitive about Kevin Spacey films in the past while and just haven't been able to engage with them at all, so I ended up taking it off my watchlist. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to it at some point or not.

I feel similarly about a lot of this stuff where yeah like, a lot of the time it is characters and environments who are neurodivergent-ccoded, which I think makes a big difference in the film's approach to skill or capacity, but also like... Obviously I use this as a hook in a lot of my own work, but I just adore certain qualities in a character, and a lot of the time it is like... It's not just about how good or skilled someone is in a field or at their job, but how offputting they are to others as a result or in the process, and how delightful that latter aspect makes to the watch!

Type in the current year (or other year you're looking for) and select the Attic Calendar (the basic calendar used and created in ancient Athens to keep track of all of the celebrations).

I recommend that after clicking on a link and reading the short little explanation of the celebration to look it up and research it more to get a better understanding of how to celebrate it! It also gives you the estimate of how the days would line up with our modern calendar because the ancient Greek calendars don't line up with our modern calenders all of the time (obviously).

As someone who considers themself a little bit of a reconstructionist, I feel as though it's important for me to be able to understand as much as I can about the ancient way the gods were worshipped and celebrated so that I can try to better recreate it in my own life to feel that same connection. This website is such a good starting point, and I cannot recommend it enough honestly!
