With Sylvie gone for an extended furlough, Violet knew she was bound to be stuck with a replacement partner that she couldn’t stand. She half-expected it to be Wyatt or Chout, knowing her luck. What she didn’t expect was to be partnered with Paramedic Chief Evan Hawkins, in Sylvie’s absence. And she certainly wasn't expecting the aftermath of that shift.

❛ so they’re all more a homebound type of situation rather than pub crawling. got it. ❜  stella was still adjusting to the 118 and the warmer weather in LA. it was an understatement to say things in chicago were a lot different.  ❛ somehow i find that hard to believe. your brother for once doesn’t seem the type to settle with a barbecue and movie nights. ❜  surprisingly, she had bounded more with maddie in the last few weeks than her actual crew. she knew it was due being the new kid in the playground and they had more to lose than a stranger from the dispatch center.

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
Tumblr media
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

——
“Okay… what does that mean?” Kelly asked, standing up to show his concern.
“I want to have a neonatologist come and look over Alexis just to be sure, but I’d like to discharge you both tonight.”
You were in disbelief, absolutely shocked they’d let you out early.
“When can we have the neo- who did you say that was?” You asked.
“A neonatologist. Dr Clark is his name. I’ll have him come by when he has a moment,” she smiled.
“Thank you, thank you so much.”
As Doctor Calhoun left the room, you and Kelly both had smiles plastered across your faces.
“I guess we better start packing up,” you shrugged.
A knock on the door a few moments later interrupted your packing. A familiar face walked in.
“Clark?” Kelly asked in disbelief, “Jeff Clark?”
“Kelly, this your kid?” Jeff responded.
“Yup, this is her.”
“She’s beautiful, mind if I do my checkup?”
“Not at all.”
“Hi, I’m-“ you started.
“Oh right, sorry baby. This is my wife, a damn trooper carrying a Severide baby,” Kelly chuckled.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Doctor Jeff Clark, uh… formerly Firefighter Jeff Clark. I used to work with Kelly before going to medical school,” Dr Clark explained.
“Good to meet you, Doctor Clark.”
“Jeff, please. Kelly’s a good friend.”
“Alright, Jeff.”
Walking towards you and Kelly, he pulled his stethoscope out.
“I can do my exam while she’s still in your arms, if that’s good with you Kelly,” Clark motioned.
“Absolutely. How did you get into neonatal…?” He led off.
“Neonatology? Funny story actually,” he laughed, moving the stethoscope around Alexis’ back and chest, “through my residency, I had the opportunity to work in the NICU for a shift. Loved it so much, I took on a few more shifts and eventually I switched over. Now I get to take care of brand new babies for a living.”
“It’s an honourable thing you’re doing here, Clark.”
“Craved the rush I got working with the CFD, now I get to do that with less bunker gear.”
Kelly chuckled, “how’s she looking?”
“Nothing as of yet that would make me want to keep her here, other than the fact she’s adorable.”
“She gets it from her dad,” you interjected, giggling.
Doctor Clark completed a little more poking and prodding on Alexis before replacing his stethoscope to his neck.
Jeff smiled, “I’m finished up here. You guys are good to take her home once we get all of the paperwork done.”
“Thank you, Clark,” Kelly stood up to hug him with one arm.
“Good luck Severide Family. Bring her back soon, will you? Always nice to see the ones that make it.”
Jeff left the room and happy tears streamed down your face.
——
“Do we have everything?” You asked, situating yourself in the wheelchair an orderly had brought for you.
“Diapers, wipes, fan, diaper cream, blankets, postpartum hospital freebies,” Kelly laughed, “I think so.”
“Car seat?”
“Alexis is in it, baby. We’re all good,” he assured you.
“Ready?” The orderly asked.
You nodded and Kelly placed the car seat on your lap. The orderly started to bring you out towards the parking lot with Kelly carrying your bag behind you.
“This is your stop,” the orderly announced as you reached Med’s exit.
“Thank you,” you replied, grabbing Alexis’ car seat and standing up.
Kelly took the car seat, “I’ve got her.”
As you made your way to where Kelly parked your SUV, what felt like miles away you might add, a few tears rolled down your face.
“What’s wrong?” Kelly stopped, enveloping you in a hug with one arm.
“I’m just so happy,” you smiled through the tears, “I didn’t think I’d ever get to have this moment.”
“Come on, let’s get you home.”
Once you made it to your car, Kelly fastened Alexis’ car seat and helped you into the backseat beside Alexis.
As he drove home, he made sure to drive as carefully as he possibly could, knowing you’d give him trouble if he didn’t.
“Ready to carry her into her first home?” Kelly asked, unlocking the apartment door.
“Excited, but exhausted,” you smiled.
“It’s late, Alexis is already asleep. I can put her in the bassinet if you want.”
“We can do it together, that’s ok.”
You waddled in the apartment, carrying Alexis’ car seat.
“I didn’t think I would still have the waddle,” you laughed.
“You may not be pregnant anymore, but you’re healing from a major surgery, babe. Take it easy.”
He led you over to your bed, still carrying your hospital bag with him.
“Anything you want out of here for tonight?” He asked, “I’ll go put the breast milk in the fridge.”
“Just my phone charger please,” you replied, taking Alexis out of her car seat and bringing her over to the bassinet by your night stand.
“Do you want to get up with her tonight or should I let you sleep?”
“If you aren’t too tired,” you smiled softly.
“I’d love to get up with her. You need sleep, I can tell.”
“I do need sleep,” you laughed, “you sure you don’t mind feeding and changing her tonight. I know that recliner couldn’t have allowed you to get too much sleep.”
“I ran into burning buildings on no sleep sometimes baby, I’m sure I can get up with Alexis so you can recover.”
Getting yourself tucked under the covers, you turned out the light on your night stand. After Kelly came back in from the kitchen, he crawled into bed beside you with heavy eyes.
Placing his arm around your waist, he snaked his hand to lay over to you belly, something he did while you were pregnant when he wasn’t on shift. Even when he was on shift, you placed your own hand there, as a comforting reminder.
“Goodnight Kelly,” you leaned over to kiss him, “I love you.”
“Goodnight baby, I love you too. Thank you for keeping our baby safe these past nine months.”

Chicago Fire friendships that I absolutely adore and headcanons for them, in no particular order:
• Otis and Stella
Tumblr media
-In 5x14, after everyone is successfully brought back to 51, their shared fist bump just makes my little heart so happy. You can’t tell me that they don’t spend late nights closing up Molly’s, talking about their favorite Star Trek characters and which reruns were the best. Stella would threaten him not to speak a word of this to anyone, partly because she liked keeping her reputation as the “cool girl”, and partly because she loved that it was something their friendship started growing from.
• Casey and Severide
Tumblr media
-These two clowns absolutely hated each other at the start of the show, but have since developed the best bromance in history. From letting Kelly move in with him, to Kelly always having Casey’s back, Matt will always be there for Kelly, and Kelly will always be there for Matt.
• Gabby and Sylvie
Tumblr media
-Since Shay’s death, Gabby found herself struggling to become close with another girl friend. She’d be lying if she didn’t think to herself every shift that Shay would’ve loved Sylvie. They’d have been the best trio in Chicago.
• Mouch and Herrmann
Tumblr media
-These two are an inseparable pair, the best of friends, a dynamic duo. Herrmann would come up with a new analogy for how he and Mouch have been fighting fires side-by-side since dinosaurs roamed the earth. When Herrmann was being considered for a promotion to lieutenant, Mouch asked if he could pull him to his new house for a reason. They’ll always have each other’s backs.
• Peter Mills and Gabby
Tumblr media
-Gabby was Peter’s first true love, the first girl he’d ever been with and had no doubt in his mind that, if it came down to it, he’d lay his life down for her. They both hated that their relationship didn’t pan out as expected, but the bond they shared never left. As Peter left Chicago, he gave Gabby an offer that he’d always be there for her, if she was ready. Had she not had Matt, she might have taken him up on his offer.
•Chili and Herrmann
Tumblr media
Since Herrmann was constantly on the hunt for the right entrepreneurial gig (before Molly’s), he wanted to look out for Chili in a way that no one had been looking out for him. He had 5 kids of his own, but more than enough love to give to another. Chili looked at him like a father-figure.

Right Where You Left Me
Tumblr media
Anyway, here's some angst
Contains: Carmy being angsty, al-anon meetings, male m*stburbation, The Box, mentions of s*icide
Carmy’s back in Chicago for less than forty-eight hours before Sugar brings you up. “You should go see her, Carmy.” He bites back what he wants to say, (“fuck off, Sugar.”) and takes a deep breath so he doesn’t feel like he’s drowning.
(He still feels like he’s drowning.)
“I know.”
He doesn’t go see you, and you don’t come see him, and life goes on. He hires Sydney, because she’s fucking incredible, and he works on the menu, and he doesn’t miss you.
(Except when he does miss you, which is all fucking the time. It’s worst early in the morning when it feels like there’s a knife shoved under his ribs.)
((And if that ache settles under the finch tattoo on his rib cage, that’s nobody’s business.))
He goes to meetings and learns how to talk about Mikey and what happened and how to let people in. He’s at a meeting when he sees you for the first time since that Christmas he called you a bitch and then moved halfway across the world. You’re speaking, because the universe hates him, about your ex-husband’s suicide and him leaving the restaurant to his little brother.
“I didn’t divorce Mikey because I stopped loving him, I love him more than words. I divorced him because I couldn’t do this.” You gesture at the people sitting in front of you. The light catches the diamond ring around a chain on your neck and Carmy stops being able to breathe. He’s out of the room before you can finish your share.
He shoves you into a tiny box in his mind, labeled DO NOT OPEN in big, bold, red letters, and tries to forget.
(When he inevitably wakes up at night, his hand is resting on his rib cage, covering the finch tattoo he’d gotten on your eighteenth birthday because he would’ve done anything you’d asked, and he doesn’t fall back asleep.)
It’s Sydney who opens The Box, completely by accident. “Chef, somebody ordered a Finch special and Tina won’t tell me what it is,” (fuck, T’s still giving her trouble), “and I…it’s not on the menu so I’m just—“
“It’s an Italian beef sandwich with pickles, Lays crumbled on it,  a Diet Coke, and a cookie.” Your order is etched onto his mind. Carmy can’t name the capital of Montana or give directions or diagram a sentence (whatever the fuck that means) but he knows your order. Sydney gives him a strange look.
“Is that all, Chef?”
“Yes, Chef. Thank you, Chef.”
He spends the rest of the shift trying to close The Box.
He goes home and dreams about being bracketed by silky smooth thighs. He dreams about hands in his hair and gasps of pleasure. The piercing cries of the fire alarm pull him back into the world of the living.
It takes him all of five minutes after CFD gives them the all clear to go back upstairs before he’s frustratedly shoving a hand into his boxers to palm himself. He’s still half hard from the dream and the memory of being wrapped inside you. His hand doesn’t compare but it sends sparks through his body nonetheless. Carmy doesn’t touch himself very often, too exhausted after work and too Catholic.
He always thinks of you when he does. His first everything. Your smile, your eyes, the twinkle in your eye when you give him shit about something, the way you move when you’re dancing around the kitchen. His strokes speed up as he imagines your face full of pleasure.
(The few times you’d had sex before he broke your heart and left were incredible for him. He’s certain you didn’t cum.)
Carmy spills into his hand and onto his chest. He lets the cum dry there, evidence of his shame.
It’s a Thursday when Carmy speaks to you for the first time since he came back to Chicago.
(Because fuck Thursdays)
He isn’t even supposed to work front of house. Richie’s out because Ava’s sick, Fak’s in the back trying to fix the AC, Tina had to go pick up Luis from school, and Sydney needs everyone else so he’s up front. It’s been a shit day from the start. It’s hot as fuck outside, so his apartment is sweltering. He’d been covered in sweat before he’d even stepped out into the summer heat. The Beef isn’t any cooler
”Carmen?”
And there you are, his worst nightmare and his most cherished dream, standing in front of him.
You smile and it’s as beautiful (maybe more?) as he remembers. He can tell right away that the grief has taken a toll on you. Your hair is a little duller than in the wedding photo he’d found in the office, your smile not as radiant, your eyes tired. You’re still absolutely, without a doubt, the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. He’s been to parties with the top models in the world (at which he’d sat alone in the corner) and you still take the cake.
“Uh, hey Finch. Hey.”
You look around him at the grungy Beef. “Haven’t changed anything, have you? Good, as co-owner, I get a say on any major changes.” You’re grinning at him but he’s brain stuck on that word, co-owner. You’d owned it with Mikey, of course you had, you’d been his wife. You laughed. “‘M kidding, Carmen. I let Mikey have it in the divorce. You can do what you want with the Beef.” He really shouldn’t feel such relief that you wouldn’t be here, and he shouldn’t hate you calling him Carmen as much as he did.
“Finch, ya don’t hafta…you don’t have to call me Carmen.”
Your grin, that grin her loved so much, faltered. “I know. But you never…we haven’t…what are…” it wasn’t like you to have trouble finding your words, and he hated that he was the cause of it. “Carmen is safe.” That shouldn’t hurt as much as it did. “You know you’re always safe with me, Finch.” Your look wasn’t quite withering, but it made him feel impossibly small. “Am I, Carmen?” Before he could say yes, you are, or I still love you, Fak appeared at his shoulder and started talking your ear off.
You’re gone before he can take your order.

Being part of the CFD was always going to give you new life experiences. You'd had four calls today, the first a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver. You'd helped cut open a car, pulling out a pregnant woman and her young daughter, the drunk had died on impact. The second, four kids decided to light some fire crackers out in an abandoned trailer park and throw them around. One of the boys got hit and had caught light, alongside one of the old trailers that were left there. He'd sustain some minor burns, owing mainly to the thick coat he wore. A stern talking too and a serious look from Chief Boden ensured they wouldn't be doing it again. The third was an elderly lady who had managed to start a pan fire in her ground floor apartment, luckily her neighbour had gotten her out before anything serious happened to her. The fourth... the fourth is where all hell broke loose. Some putz had messed up in his meth lab, blowing half a building up. Firehouse 51 were the on scene first, strapping your mask on you followed Casey, Herrmann, Severide and Kidd to the top floor slowly working your way down. Hammering on doors, you ushered more people out than you could keep count of. The further down the building you got the worse it became to see and find conscious residents. You exited the building for a second time carrying a young boy, running him over to the ambo you laid him on the bed.
"Young boy, found him unconscious on the ninth floor. He's got a laceration to his leg, and he's inhaled a lot of smoke." Brett nodded, checking his chest.
"Okay let's go." helping to load him into the back of the ambo, you shut the doors and watched them speed away. Turning around, you walked straight into Antonio.
"Shit I'm sorry (Y/N)." He shook his head waving his phone.
"Phone won't stop buzzing, this is a nightmare." Nodding you patted his shoulder,
"I know, don't worry we're pulling out everyone and hopefully one will lead us to the people who did this." He gave you a half smile, you never told anyone but you loved how Antonio smiled. It was always like he was hiding something, it made you curious. Running his hand over his head, he pocketed his phone.
"Well... if you could bring me out some solid evidence that would sure make my job easier." Stepping away you grinned,
"And what do I get if I do?" He chuckled, pulling out his ringing phone again he looked back up at you.
"I'll cook you dinner." Pressing your gloved hand to your chest, you winked.
"One crispy critter coming up." Pulling your mask and helmet back on you ran back into the building, not noticing Antonio watching you, he smirked, bringing the phone to his ear.
"Yeah?!"
----------------------------------------
It took five hours in total to get everyone out, and to extinguish the fire. You'd all headed back in once Boden gave the go ahead, checking for any evidence of how the fire started, and if anyone else was tied to it. There wasn't a lot to gather as the fifth floor was practically a scorched hole, you'd shifted a load of rubble and found part of the meth dealer.
"One crispy critter." You mumbled to yourself. Frowning, you gently pushed the part of him aside and found a perfect rectangular indent in the ground. Pulling your halligan round, you jammed it into the edging and pried the top off.
"Lieutenant... I'm gonna need a blow torch over here!" Calling over your shoulder, Severide appeared looking down and whistled.
"What you thinks inside?" Shrugging and smiling he took the blow torch from Cap,
"Guess we'll find out." Stepping away, you turned your back until you heard the torch go off and the thick metal door clunk to the floor. Looking back round, you looked into the now opened safe and felt your eyes go wide.
"That is a lot of cash Kellie."
"Yep... go get Antonio will ya? Bring him in here, but mind the third floor staircase it's pretty ruined. Take the South side stairs to get here okay?"
"No problem Lieutenant." Turning back around you made your way out of the apartment and out of the building. You found Antonio questioning some of the residents of the building. You couldn't help but admire the way he held himself, you'd guessed he would look good under all that leather. But as it was a Chicago winter, you could only guess how good he looked. You made to stand in his line of sight wanting to catch his attention. Glancing over he nodded, you held up a hand and waited. You passed the time and spoke to some of the residents, getting them blankets and bottles of water until they could be moved.
"(Y/N)!" Looking back, you handed over the blankets you had to a young family, tucking one round a small girl with big brown eyes. Waving at her, you walked back to Antonio.
"Hey, sorry I know you're busy with statements but we've found a safe with a chunk of cash and files in which I think you may need." Antonio's eyes lit up, gesturing his hand towards the building.
"Then lead the way." Walking back to the building you lead him up the stairs and towards the South side like Serveride said.
"We've got to go this way Detective, the other set of stairs aren't secure and could give way." Antonio laughed,
"You know you don't have to call me Detective, you can call me by my name right?" Smiling to yourself, you glanced behind you.
"I... yeah I know... it's... I don't like being unprofessional is all. I'm happy to use your name outside of work hours... just don't want anyone thinking I'm being disrespectful you know?" 'Tonio stopped in the hallway you was walking down, smiling.
"Fair enough... well I'm pretty sure I said I'd cook you dinner right? So how about I come around after shift, and make you something hmm?" You ran your tongue over your bottom lip, noticing how he watched transfixed as you did.
"Yeah sure... okay." Turning back you started walking again.
"Not gonna give me your address no?"
"You're a Detective...so detect." Looking back you winked, then waving your hand over your shoulder, you motioned for him to follow you. Biting his lip he followed, keeping quiet the rest of the way.
Showing him into the apartment, you walked him to Severide then left them both to talk as you continued your checks of the building. The rest of shift went in a haze, it took another three hours to complete the building checks. By the time you got back to the firehouse, you had one hour till your shift finished. You headed to the showers and let the hot water run down you helping the ache that had slowly built in your back. Once you'd finished you pulled on clean clothes and dried your hair. Checking the time, you pulled out your bag, packed everything up and pulled on your fleece and hat. You filed out behind some of your crew mates, all of who didn't feel like talking. That fire had taken a lot out of you all. Waving bye to Stella you climbed into your car and headed back to your apartment.
------------------------------
You dumped your bag and boots in the closet, and hung your coat up on the hook. You headed straight to the your bedroom and changed into a loose fitting top and jogging bottoms. Throwing your hair up into a loose bun, you padded into the kitchen to make yourself a tea. Before you could finish making it, there was a knock at your door. Smirking, you headed out the kitchen, tea forgotten, and slowly pulled open your door. There he was, standing there with that gorgeous smile on his face, black jeans and boots, a dark fitted t-shirt, leather jacket over the top and a woolen hat. You even glinted a set of cuffs on his belt as he shifted. God help me, the thought flitted through your mind before you could even take a breath.
"Hey." His voice was low, and his face looked a little tired.
"You found me Detective." Raising an eyebrow, he grinned.
"That I did, you wanna let me in?" Stepping back you pulled open the door allowing him in. Closing it behind him, you pulled the closet door open,
"You can put your coat and boots in there Detective, I'll grab you a beer." Slowly walking away you felt his eyes linger on you as you rounded the corner to the kitchen. You couldn't help the shit eat grin on your face as you pulled open the fridge. However, you nearly dropped the beer as Antonio had snuck up behind you.
"What happened to calling me Antonio hmm?" He was so close you could feel his breath on your neck. Letting out a shout, you spun round, elbow out, clocking him in the ribs causing him to fall back against the counter.
"Ow...fuck."
"Jesus 'Tonio, you can't just sneak up like that... are you okay." Putting the beer on the side, you leaned closer to him trying to pull his hands away from his side.
"Damn mi amor you got some power in you. You should come down to my boxing gym." Smirking he looked up at you, and you felt your face flush. Turning back to the beer you cracked it open, took a gulp for yourself, then finished the bottle.
"You know, I may just come down there... then maybe I can kick your ass." Poking him in the ribs again, he laughed and grabbed your hand pulling you a little closer to him, his lips barely an inch from yours. You felt yourself shiver, the heat from his body coming off him in waves.
"Okay okay, but maybe as we have both had a long day we instead have some beers and food hmm?" Letting go of your hand, he reached round the corner and picked up a bag, emptying it's contents onto the counter.
"I hope you're hungry, because I don't make small meals." Reaching into the fridge again you pulled out another two bears, cracked them open and hummed.
"To be honest I'm that hungry I could eat a Vegas style buffet right now." Running your gaze over him you smirked. Giving you that half smile, he took the beer and took a gulp.
"That so huh?"
"Well I am a firefighter, we burn a lot of energy." Watching him out the corner of your eye you saw the smile that sat there from your witty pun.
"Well... then we best get those energy levels back up hmm?" Nodding you picked up a knife and started cutting some peppers and onions. You had no clue what you was making but you helped, and quietly chatted. It felt nice to do something as simple as cooking dinner. Antonio had always seemed intense when you'd worked alongside him at scenes you were both at, but you had seen a different side of him when you'd been at Molly's together. At some point, 'Tonio had ushered you into a seat at the dinner table handing you a new beer as he finished up the food. Once done, he handed you a plate filled with vegetables, chicken and lord knows what else.
"Oh my gods this is amazing."
"So surprised?" He spoke in between a fork full of food.
"Not surprised, just... most of the cops I know barely make themselves toast let alone a nice meal like this." Looking pleased with himself he took another gulp of beer. The two of you falling into a comfortable silence as you ate. Once you'd finished you decided to leave the plates in the sink, I can deal with them tomorrow. Gesturing to him, you moved into the living room and dropped onto your plush sofa, the both of you sinking into its depths. You felt the lull of sleep pulling at you.
"You gotta nice place here (Y/N), you don't have any roommates no?" Catching his questioning look you dropped your head against the back of the sofa and smirked.
"Lucky for you papi I live here alone." Thinking he hadn't heard you, you tilted your head and looked at him. Colour had flooded his cheeks, his eyes blown.
"Call me that again." His voice was a low whisper. Sitting up, you took his beer and placed yours and his on the table and shifted back closer to him.
"You like being called that huh?" Reaching over he wrapped his hand around your thigh, gently squeezing, his gaze was dark, slowly running over you.
"Maybe...say it again and see."
"Mmm okay... but first I um... I've been wanting to do something all day, if you don't mind."
"Huh... and what's that?" You felt your nerves kick in, you'd wanted to kiss Antonio since the first time you saw him two years ago. You'd watched him go through different girlfriends and casual dates, each of which ended after a few months. Leaning closer you traced his jaw with one hand. It felt slightly rough, no doubt tomorrow he would have a slight stubble showing. You didn't know at what point you did it, your brain must have gone blank. For the next time you blinked, you was leaning into 'Tonio and gently biting his lip. He let out a low moan, the hand that was on your thigh shifted to the back of it moving you forward to his lap. Obliging, you moved with him straddling his thick thighs all the while not taking your mouth off of him. Bringing both your hands up, you gently ran them through his hair messing up the painstakingly neat style he had. He was always so put together... which made it even more thrilling to be the one to bring that perfect composure crumbling down around him. Fisting your hands in his hair, you tugged on it. It must have been hard enough, as it caused him to suck in a sharp breath you kissed him, fiercely running your tongue against his own.
"Fuck..." he moaned into your mouth, grabbing your ass he hauled himself up pulling your legs around him and started down the hallway.
"On the left... my room." You dug your fingers into his shoulders, deepening the kiss. You heard the thud of the door as 'Tonio kicked it open. You expected to be thrown onto your bed, so it surprised you when he slowly laid you back, gently holding himself above you. Pulling away a little he looked down at you his breathing coming in short bursts.
"You... you okay with this?" Smiling you ran your thumb over his bottom lip,
"I'm very much okay with this papi." Dropping his head, he huffed out a laugh.
"Good." Before you could do anything, his hands were on your jogging bottoms pulling them down, reaching up you pulled your own shirt off exposing your bare chest, Antonio seemed to choke on his own words.
"Lord have mercy." Sitting up you unbuckled his belt and then his jeans, running your tongue against his exposed hip.
"The lord isn't going to help you tonight Detective." Dropping his head back he fisted his hands at his side, clearly trying to control himself. Standing up, you tugged on his shirt,
"Take this off." It took a moment for him to relax his shoulders, then allowed you to pull his shirt over his head. You felt your mouth instantly water at the sight of him. Reaching his hand up to your chin, he tilted your face up to him.
"You okay there firefighter?" Even though your face was tilted up, you couldn't take your eye off of his exposed chest.
"I um... I..." You absentmindedly ran your hand over him, tracing the dips, frowning at the years healed bullet wound in his chest. Leaning closer you pressed a kiss to his chest, slowly moving from one side to the other. 'Tonio let you do as you pleased as he reached up, removing your hair tie and letting it fall around your shoulders. He seemed to like how it looked, running it through his fingers multiple times before gently moving it aside to expose your neck and pressing his mouth against your pulse. Humming quietly you leaned into the touch enjoying the feeling. How many times had you imagined something like this? How many times had you thought about Antonio standing before you, allowing you to touch him, and kiss him as you pleased?
"Antonio?"
"Hmm?"
"You still have your jeans on."
"Mmm.." Chuckling you reached down pulled on the sides of his jeans, slowly pulling him round, pushing him to sit on the bed.
"Hey... I was enjoying myself there." Pulling his jeans off, you pushed him onto his back and straddled his lap.
"Well I thought you might enjoy this a bit more hmm?" Placing his hands on your hips you leaned closer so your lips barely brushed against his.
"I thought that maybe... you'd like to be the one cuffed for a change hmm?" His grin widened, sitting up a little he reached to his jeans pulled out his cuffs.
"Yes ma'am." Your eyes gleamed at them, reaching up to take them 'Tonio grabbed your wrist clipped one cuff on, pushed you onto your back and cuffed your other hand.
"HEY!" you protested loudly, as he kneeled between your legs he placed your hands above your head.
"Hey yourself..." running his hands down your body he stopped at your hips.
"You know... it took everything I had in me not to kiss you in that hallway today." His eyes continued to roam over your body along with his hands, looking up at you he smiled at the look on your face.
"Surprised?"
"I am... I just... I..." Licking your lips your breathing became heavy, your body tingling. It was only occurring to you now the situation you was in, cuffed, partially naked, Antonio kneeling between your shaking legs. 'Tonio tilted his head slightly, teasingly tracing his fingers on the inside of your thigh.
"Nervous?" His voice was a whisper, you could see how excited he was already. Throat going dry you shook your head,
"Not at all Detective." You didn't have a moment to think, before you knew it 'Tonio was kissing you fiercely, one hand gripping onto your ass the other pulling your leg around him. Raising your arms you placed them around his neck, digging your fingers into him. Antonio smiled into the kiss, raising his hand to lift your arms off of him and pinning them above your head.
"Uh-uh, you gotta be patient babe." Keeping your hands pinned above you, he ran his other hand down your side hooking his fingers into the edge of your panties slowly dragging them down your thighs. Moving his way down your body, he gently bit into your hips, running his tongue over the bite. Looking down at the site before you, you felt your breath stop in your chest. 'Tonio shifted himself further down, placing your legs over his shoulders he didn't give you a moments pause before he pressed his tongue against your centre. You couldn't help the moan that was pulled from you, the feeling of Antonio's mouth on you, along with his rough hands against the soft skin of your thighs was the best thing you had felt in months. You clenched your hands tightly above you, all you wanted to do was reach down and grab onto him, touch him in anyway you could. He kept up a pace just right to keep you on edge for what felt like forever.
"Please... 'Tonio... I can't." You couldn't keep still any more, even with Antonio holding your hips down, your skin was burning with excitement and you needed a release. Smirking, 'Tonio pulled himself up, looking down at your flushed face.
"You need something babe?"
"You... Detective... I need you... now." Leaning in to kiss you, 'Tonio pulled off his boxers and settled himself between your legs again. Raising one hand he pinned your wrists down, and trailed the other down your side.
"Please!" You begged, it was driving you mad to have him this close to you, to feel him and not be able to have him how you wanted.
"Mmm... I like it when you beg mi amor." Pulling your leg up over his hip, 'Tonio slowly pushed into you. Your eyes closed as you felt bliss slowly spread through your body. He seemed to catch his breath as he bottomed out, his hand twitching on your thigh.
"Christ Antonio..." Tilting your head, you saw he had also closed his eyes. You pressed a kiss to his jaw, then bit him gently. Pulling himself up a little, he looked down at you his eyes blown. Humming quietly to himself, he ran his tongue over his bottom lip before leaning in to kiss you. Shifting his hips, he started to move slowly causing you to moan into the kiss. Pulling your arms up again you placed them around Antonio's neck, tangling your fingers in his hair. Lifting your hips up slightly, you started to meet his movements with your own. Reaching down, he lifted one of your legs up over the crook of his arm, his pace quickening.
"Fuck... (Y/N), you feel so good." Huffing out a small laugh, you pulled on his hair slightly tugging him down to you, your voice merely a whisper.
"Then go faster papi." Antonio let out a low growl, pinning your hip down he started to move quicker, reaching back, you gripped onto the headboard. His mouth was on you, fiercely kissing you until your lungs burned through lack of air. You knew you would have a bruise on your hip from how hard he was gripping you, not to mention the bruises that would no doubt circle your wrists from the cuffs.
"(Y/N)... I'm so close."
"Me too... just... I need." Glancing down between you, Antonio understood what you wanted. Shifting his hand from your thigh, he started to circle your clit, pressing harder to match his thrust. White lights seemed to burst behind your eyes, your legs wrapping tightly around 'Tonio's waist.
"Antonio!" Calling his name you couldn't help but sink your teeth into his shoulder as you came, gripping onto him as your climax pulled you into a blissful state. 'Tonio followed close after you, your name falling from his lips as though a prayer, his head dropped into the dip of your neck. You didn't remember him stopping, just that the world around you became quiet, your hands has loosened their grip on his flushed skin, your head pressed gently against his.
"You with me Dawson?" You managed to mutter against him.
"Mmmhmm." Shifting himself he laid next to you, reaching for his jeans to grab the key to the cuffs. Offering your hands to him, he deftly unlocked them with the skill of a man who had done that a thousand times in his life.
"Ah shit (Y/N) your wrists." Sitting up a little, worry filled his face as he looked at the purple rings already forming on your wrists.
"Hey... don't worry I'll be fine. I've got some really good makeup that will cover these over." He glanced up at your face, his eyes filled with guilt.
"What if it doesn't?" Grinning, you winked at him,
"Well then I will just have to tell people that this new guy I'm seeing is a filthy bastard, amazing in bed and enjoys cuffing me." A small smirk flittered over his handsome face.
"Amazing huh?" Pulling him down, you kissed him deeply.
"Very amazing... although I may need to go a few more rounds... just to be sure." Eyes widening at your comment, you grinned widly.
"Well... maybe after we sleep off this long ass day we've just had, and after that... I think I'm going to sleep for a week." Smiling, Antonio leaned down and placed a kiss on each of your wrists, then turned and kissed you softly.
"Sounds good to me mi amor." Pulling you close to him, he wrapped his arm around you as you managed to pull up the duvet. Snuggling down, you felt Antonio's breathing become even as he slowly fell asleep. Humming quietly, you pressed a kiss to his chest glimpsing the marks you had left on him. Hopefully, he had a lot of high neck shirts to wear until it went down. Grinning to yourself, you settled down against him enjoying the feeling of finally having Detective Dawson all to yourself.

• ❛ you think i’m jealous? ❜
Otis x fem
Various Question Sentence Starters
brian zvonecek x fem!reader
a/n: hi anon, i’m so glad you like my page it means the world to me 🥰🥰. sorry if this is short, and sorry it took a little bit for me to post! i honestly didn’t really know what direction to take this in so i hope you like it! sorry if it’s not what you were wanting :(
warnings: mentions of alcohol, swearing, fluff, Idk if this counts as angst, anything i missed
Tumblr media
“You think i’m jealous?!” You half shout half whine at your boyfriend who just walked you inside your shared apartment.
“Well, a little yeah.” He says chuckling a little and unzipping your coat for you, helping you take it off.
“Well I’m not!” You say growing irritated.
“Y/N, you’re drunk. We can talk about this in the morning all i’m saying is you have nothing to be jealous about.” Brian says cupping your pouting face in his hands.
“No, I don’t want to talk about it in the morning I want to talk now!” You say mad. You’re not jealous, you trust your boyfriend. You have no reason to be jealous, you’re hot. Hot as fuck, and so is your boyfriend and you’re perfect together.
But, when there is another very attractive woman rubbing circles on his bicep with her index finger in the way you do at the bar he owns, it’s annoying. And you may or may not be worried he likes it when she does it more than he likes it when you do it. And the way she bats her eyes at him, he might like it more when she does it rather than when you do it, so he’s just going to kick you out without telling you moving all of your stuff out and all of her stuff in. And he’s going to keep both of your dogs, and he’s going to marry that girl instead of marry you, and they’re going to have a bunch of babies that should be your babies.
Okay, maybe you are jealous. But he doesn’t need to know.
“Fine. If you want to talk about it, at least get ready for bed first.” He says walking into your bedroom leaving you in the kitchen alone.
See he’s already leaving you.
Rolling your eyes you begin making some relaxing tea so it’ll be cooled off once you’re ready to drink it.
Finally following him into the bedroom you see he’s already shirtless in bed reading. Your first thought is, ‘God he’s so hot.’ but then the irritation in you says that he just doesn’t care enough to brush his teeth or wash his face with you and you’re left to do it alone. He’s preparing you for when he kicks you out and keeps the dogs, and has babies with another women.
Rolling your eyes and stomping into the bathroom connected to your bedroom you slightly slam the bathroom door a lot harder than you intended too. “Fuck.” You mutter to yourself and sighing. Too late now.
Once you’ve finished brushing your teeth and washing your face you open the bathroom door to Brian leaning against the door frame.
“What’s wrong?” He asks knowing it’ll get you talking, because he knows what’s wrong, he just wants to hear it from your perspective.
“Nothing,” You mutter changing out of your jeans and putting on pajama pants, then changing your shirt and putting on one of his CFD shirts that’s probably two sizes too big for you.
So what you’re mad at him, you’re still gonna wear his shirts.
“Y/N, tell me what’s wrong.” He says grabbing your hands and gently pulling you into him resting them on his shirtless chest.
You don’t make eye contact with him as you start to blush. The wall you’ve been trying to build for the last 15 minutes has just crumbled underneath two sentences.
Sighing and blinking away the tears you feel starting to rise you look up at the ceiling just past his face and decide to talk.
“You think i’m jealous of what happened at the bar, when i’m not! I’m just preparing for when you’re gonna kick me out and move her in and keep the dogs and get married to her and have babies with her! Those should be my babies!” You finally break down and he pulls you into a hug as you’re now sobbing.
“Y/N. Look at me.” He says pulling you from his chest and looking at how worked up you’ve gotten from another woman hitting on him. He’s flattered really, he just doesn’t know how you’re so blind to see that you’re the only woman he ever intends on having babies with.
You wipe away a few more tears and make eye contact with him.
“I don’t want to make you worked up, but i’m pretty sure everything you just said was the jealousy talking. I’m not saying that’s it a bad thing, I’m just saying that I honestly appreciate you caring right now. Because if you didn’t care, you would’ve watched that woman scratch my arm trying to be flirty, shrugged, and turned a blind eye to it. But I want you to know, you’re the only girl I want to draw circles on my arm. Her nails were too sharp for my liking. Any woman who isn’t you would have nails too sharp for my liking, okay?” He says reassuring you completely.
Taking a deep breath and giving a small smile you nod your head.
“Okay,” You say giving him another hug and giggling at how stupid alcohol makes you sound.
“I also want you to know, you’re the only woman I ever intend on having babies with.” He finally says making your heart flutter.

Why would i lie to you?
AUTHORS NOTE: I started hating this like halfway through and I just kept going? but I hate this so if y'all do too I couldn't even blame you. This was supposed to be a request but I don't even like this enough to say it is.
synopsis: You and Gallo are targeted after accidentally coming across something you shouldn't.
warnings: some VERY bad writing, canon-typical violence, mention of kidnapping, head injury, very bad medical understanding, kind of meh ending
Tumblr media
Working in CFD meant every shift had the potential to be crazier than the last. You were always expecting something crazy to happen that would spin the entire day into chaos.
The last thing you were expecting on a seemingly random Tuesday was to walk straight into a drug den. You and Gallo were ordered to clear the house next door and ensure no sparks would ignite the abandoned building. You both had to pry the door open, making your way through the front room to check the side for any signs of smoke. As soon as you made it through the front room you were greeted by the sight of enough fentanyl and cocaine to kill the entire house.
You quickly stopped Gallo from barreling in after you, aware of all of the powders around the room.
"Is that...?"
"Yeah," You whispered, hands shaking as you radioed Kidd.
"Hey Lieutenant, do you copy?"
"I Copy, what's up Halstead?"
"We're gonna need CPD and decontamination down here," You replied, "I think we just found a trap house."
There was a pause, you and Gallo looked at each other nervously. You could hear Severiade ordering what you asked for, no doubt also radioing Boden.
"Are you and Gallo okay?" Kidd finally said.
"Yeah," Gallo nodded, "We're good, Lieutenant."
"Gallo," You caught his attention, pointing out the powder on both of your turnout gear, "We need to get out of here."
Gallo nodded, clearly trying not to breathe too deep like you were.
"Lieutenant, we have an unknown substance on our turnouts," You informed, "We need might need Brett and Violet standing by, from the looks of this set-up, I think it's Fentanyl."
"Okay, Copy that," Stella rattled off what she wanted you two to do. She ordered you both to leave the house, following Cruz and Severiade to the hasty decontamination that had been set up. Cruz had all but said that it was CFD policy and you two would be fine, but everyone was still on edge. You and Gallo had to strip down to your underwear, washing any exposed skin that wasn't covered by your turnouts.
"Hey," Kidd entered the tent as you and Gallo wrapped yourselves in Towels, "CPD just confirmed it was fentanyl in that room. They're calling in intelligence."
You and Gallo shared a look.
"Well, do we get to have some real clothes? Or do we have to wait around in towels?" You finally asked.
Kidd shook her head, "Protocol says we have to take you two to Med to get checked out-" You and Gallo groaned "-I'll bring you some clothes there."
"We really have to go to Med?" Gallo pressed, both of you trailing behind Stella as she headed for 61.
She scoffed, "Uh yeah. Now get in."
Violet chuckled from inside the rig, pointing at the two spots next to her, "One of you get the gurney."
"Not me," You snapped, playfully jabbing at Gallo before climbing to sit next to Violet. Gallo grumbled about it being unfair, but climbed into the rig and sat on the gurney anyway.
When you walked into Med, they were already waiting for you. Maggie and Will stood at the ambulance entrance with stupid grins when they saw your frustrated pout.
"You always find trouble?" Will joked, gesturing for you to sit on the edge of the bed in Bay 3.
"I just thought I'd come to see you," You told your brother, giving him a massive fake smile.
Will rolled his eyes as he ran through his checks, "How do you even accidentally find a drug den?"
"Yeah, I'd like to know that too."
You and Will looked over to see Jay leaning in the doorway, an amused smile on his face.
"We hadn't caught up in weeks, so I thought Halstead Reunion, ya know?" You replied, laughing as Jay tried to ruffle your wet hair.
"You look like a drowned rat," he laughed, wiping his hand on the towel around your shoulders like it was disgusting.
"Wow, that's the thanks I get for doing your job for you?" You retorted.
"Settle down, Children," Will waved Jay away when he started getting in the way.
You had to sit for almost an hour waiting for Med to go through the checks. When they were done, Kidd gave you CFD sweats to change into. When you were sufficiently dressed to look like a cadet, you joined Kidd and Boden to see what CPD wanted you to do.
Gallo looked a lot better than you did, his hair had at least dried and the sweats were his size. You, on the other hand, did in fact look like a drowned rat. The sweats Kidd had given you were much too big. You had to tie the sweatpants to keep them sitting comfortably. Both you and Gallo had Truck 51 shirts on, the goat emblem on the chest making you look like candidates.
Will had given you a towel, helping you dry your hair while you waited. You looked less rat-like but still felt extremely uncomfortable. Will had jokingly said at least you weren't overdosing on narcotics and immediately apologized when you gave him a shocked frown.
"Alright," Jay said as he and Hailey walked up to your little gathered group, "We need you two to come down to the district with us, and go over what you saw one last time on record."
"Alright, then," Boden nodded, giving you and Gallo his 'please behave' look he reserved especially for the two of you. "Keep me updated."
"Will do, Chief," Jay replied, letting Hailey lead the way back to their car.
As you were walking back to the car you started giving Jay shit, "So, do we get badges now? Seeming we found you your case?"
Jay scoffed, "Yeah sure."
He opened the back door for you to get in, smiling smugly. He definitely got too much amusement out of putting you into the back of his car.
You narrowed your eyes at him, "Don't smile at me like that, Chuckles."
Hailey laughed, looking back at the two of you from the passenger seat.
When you were done at the Precinct, Boden had called and informed you and Gallo were off for the rest of the shift. Jay offered to give you a ride home, all but demanding it. As you were headed back to your apartment, you asked him about the case. He waved you off with a lie about it probably being something gang-related and an easy case. You didn't really care enough to press him any further. You had learnt a while ago that pressing Jay for information about the job wasn't worth it - he tried to hide most of the danger from you. At some point, you got so used to it that you always assumed whenever he was quiet it was worth just not asking anything more.
Eventually, he even stopped pressing you about the dangers of your job, it was a weird unspoken recognition between you and him. Not to ask too much.
When you jumped out of the car you wished Jay luck in the case, wanting nothing more than to go home and wash the day away. You were leaving the shower when your phone lit up. Clearly, Gallo had the same thought as you, what an awful way to spend the rest of an on-shift day.
Want to grab a drink?
You laughed, responding; only if you bring it here cbf going out.
Gallo let you know he would be at your apartment soon, no doubt bringing enough beer for you two to drown your sorrows about being benched.
Gallo arrived with a six-pack, putting them in the fridge and bringing two over for you both. He sat next to you on the couch, both of you silently watching the game and just trying to decompress from the day.
"I hate this," You finally muttered, sick of sitting doing nothing while your friends were at work.
"Me too," Gallo replied, looking as forlorn as you felt. After another moment of silence Gallo said, "When I was coming here, it was so weird, I could have sworn someone was following me."
You laughed, "Following you?"
Gallo turned to face you, looking extremely serious, "Yeah, following me. This black ford was behind me up to the store, I thought it was nothing but when I headed here it was two cars behind me, again."
You mirrored Gallo, turning to face him as he spoke. Any sense of drowsy self-pity had vanished and now you were growing concerned, "It followed you all the way here?"
Gallo shook his head, "No. It pulled off a couple of blocks before me, I figured it must have been someone taking the same route, but..."
"But?"
"it just felt strange," Gallo confessed.
You put your almost untouched beer on the coffee table, walking around the couch to grab your phone off the kitchen counter where I was charging.
"What are you doing?" Gallo asked, frowning at you, "You think it really was following me?"
"I don't know," You told him, "But I'd feel a hell of a lot better if Jay came and told us for sure."
You searched through your phone for Jay's name, quickly calling him and walking back to Gallo. As you heard it start to dial, you heard the unmistakable sound of a car screeching to a halt.
"Tell Jay what's going on," You ordered Gallo, shoving your phone at him for him to take. As Gallo rambled off what was going on to Jay, you slowly approached the windows. You pressed to the side of the window, trying to not be seen by anyone outside. You gently parted the curtains, glancing through the gap to see four armed men getting out of a black crossover.
You ducked away from the windows quickly, grabbing Gallo's arm and yanking him along with you to your ensuite. He handed the phone to you with a breathy, "Jay wants to talk to you."
You nodded, grabbing the phone off him, then pushing him into the bathroom, "Stay in here, get low and lock the door."
Gallo protested, "What about you?"
"I'll be fine, just do as I say," You snapped back shutting the door quickly and as quietly as you could.
"-Y/N? What's going on? Y/n!"
You held your phone to your ear with your shoulder, making your way back out of your bedroom and into the lounge to get a vantage point on the car in your street.
"Jay, there are four armed men outside," You weren't sure why you were whispering, the men hadn't even approached the windows so they wouldn't be able to hear you.
"Patrol is 5 minutes out, we're not far behind, okay?" Came jays response.
"Okay," You whispered. You ducked around your couch, using the furniture to hide your figure as you tried to look for a license plate on the car.
"Shit!" You cursed, barely having time to press yourself flush to the ground before three of the men unloaded their magazines into the front of your apartment.
"Y/N?" You could hear Jay's concerned voice coming from your phone, but it had skidded out of sight when you hit the ground.
The rain of bullets left your ears ringing, all around you were shrapnel of your apartment. Tiny fragments of glass mixed with the ripped-up wood of the floors, essentially creating one hell of a scene.
You dared raise yourself off the ground, getting to your hands and knees and psyching yourself up to crawl to the kitchen to hide behind the counter. The ringing in your ears subsided briefly for you to hear the crunching of footsteps approaching. The footsteps belonged to a pair of dark military-style boots. Before you could think too much about the fact, one of the boots came down on your back, kicking you to the floor and winding you.
You let out a puff of air at the force, gaping and hiccuping trying to regain your breath. The pair of boots were joined by another and you were hauled to your feet.
"Where is it?"
Both of the men were dressed in military-style tactical gear, all black aside from their vests which were camo. Their faces were covered by goggles and balaclavas. It was no doubt meant to be intimidating, but all you could think was what the fuck did they want with you.
"I don't enjoy repeating myself, where is it?" The man on your left snarled, he had a tight grip on your arms while the man on your right loosely trained his rifle on you.
You didn't know what to say, this was all so absurd. Instead of replying to the man you just laughed, a laugh of shock and surprise. The two men looked at each other, and then one of them punched you straight in the stomach.
"Jesus Christ," You swore, doubling over and struggling not to empty your stomach on their boots, "I don't know what you're talking about, okay?"
The sound of police sirens and the bright flashing lights were surrounding you at once. You could hear the patrol cops shouting orders at the men outside your apartment, then the repeated sound of gunfire.
"Last chance," He warned, "Tell us where it is, or we'll kill you."
You almost screamed when the man's chest exploded, his blood spraying over your face and chest. At least you were expecting it when the second man went down too.
"Chicago PD!"
In your line of work, you had been covered in other people's blood more times than you cared to count - but this was different. As you stood shell-shocked, a swarm of officers filled the room. The ringing in your ears grew and grew, all you could do was stare at your shaking hands that were covered in the men's blood.
Someone was grabbing your arm, pulling you towards the door and away from the bodies. Your legs shook so badly that had to support you as you walked. Your vision was blurring from tears that clung to your lashes, every step you took felt like you were slowly sinking into the pavement. You were led through the sea of CPD to an ambulance then gently sat on the back step. You could hear the rustle of action going on around you now, but the blood rushing in your ears drowned most of it out.
Someone was gently taking your face in their hands, guiding you to look up at them. Hailey smiled down at you, slowly talking you through the wave of panic that held you. She wrapped a thick blanket around your shoulders, tucking it under your chin as you sat immobile. Hailey sat down next to you, grasping your hand tightly in hers and rubbing a soothing hand up and down your back.
"Just breathe, you're safe," She kept saying, whispering it quietly into your ear as she soothed your hair away from your face.
Once you finally felt like the world had stopped shaking and the ringing in your ears subsided you realized what was really going on.
You let out a small sigh, turning to Hailey with wide eyes. You wanted to ask what the hell had just happened, to swear and shake the anxiety out of you. Instead, you just looked at her, distraught.
Hailey knew what you were trying to say. She smiled softly, her tone was so soft it almost made you feel warm and safe, "Don't worry about that right now. What matters is that you're okay."
You nodded, letting her pull you into a tight hug and hold you there for a moment. When you both pulled away, she waved over the waiting paramedics, who gave you a few damp wipes to clean your face.
Hailey helped you wipe the blood off your face and neck, watching you struggle to not be ill at the idea of someone else's blood covering you. She kept you calm and held your hand, reassuring you that everything was alright the whole time.
When you were done clearing your face, she took both your hands and started whipping your arms and hands. As she did, your eyes wandered to the scene around you. There had to be at least 6 or 7 patrol cars all parked haphazardly around the street. Uniformed officers were already setting up the tape and directing crowds and media away from the debris field. You could see Gallo sitting in a different ambulance, he looked unharmed, probably just as shaken as you were. Kevin and Kim were standing by, talking to him and the paramedics.
Voight was standing with the rest of intelligence and Trudy, commanding the uniformed officers and lab techs around the scene. As you looked over you spotted Jay, who was standing with his arms crossed over his chest. He glanced over as you were looking, making eye contact and breaking away from the group.
Voight and the others watched him approach you and Hailey. When he got up to you, he quickly pulled you into a hug. He was squeezing you so tight it was almost constricting. You didn't have the heart to tell him that. When he pulled away he forced you to sit back down next to Hailey.
"Are you alright?" He asked gently.
You couldn't find the words to reply, just shaking your head.
Jay grimaced, nodding in understanding. "Hailey is going to go with you to Med, yeah? I'll come as soon as we finish here."
You nodded, your voice still having not returned. Jay pressed a kiss to your hairline, helping you to your feet and into the ambulance. He sent you one last smile before he shut the doors and watched the Rig pull away.
"She okay?" Voight asked as he rejoined the gathered officers.
Jay sighed, "I don't think so, she's really shaken."
Kim nodded, "Gallo told us what happened, she locked him in the bathroom like she knew they would open fire on them."
Jay remembered all the times he told you when you were younger - the safest place in that situation is in the bathtub. Seeming you didn't have one, the bathroom had been your attempt to make do with little resources. The team kept looking at him like they were expecting him to snap, such a brazen attack on his sister with so many witnesses meant there was something bigger at play here. Jay wasn't angry - he was seething. The white-hot fury that slowly burns away at your heart, that would make you act like never before.
Will was feeling something similar when he watched you walk into med for the second time that day. This time, however, he knew you were hurt. Hailey was holding you up, tightly gripping your forearm and steering you into the ED. You had refused to be wheeled in on the gurney, adrenaline coursing through you still, making you unable to feel the pain.
Will dropped his tablet on the desk, running over to you and taking your other arm as you pitched to one side.
"What the hell happened?" He asked, taking in the smudges of blood on your skin and the stains over your shirt.
Hailey answered for you as you fought to stay present, your mind wanting to swallow you whole and ignore the outside world.
Will helped you into the bed, the deja vu of the situation made your skin crawl.
"Hey, what's going on?" Dr Marcel asked as he wanted in, a nurse on his heels. Will looked at you to explain, but you were replaying the night before you. Watching your apartment rip apart again, hearing the crunching of footprints over and over.
"Y/N?" Will grabbed your hand, smoothing your hair back as he tried to calm you down. The monitors started to beep as your heart rate rose and oxygen levels dropped. "Try to breathe, squirt."
You shook your head, unable to slow your breathing or gather any control to do so.
"Can we get a cannula on her please?" Dr Marcel ordered. You could feel the tube being placed on your face, looped around your ears. It made you uncomfortable but there was nothing to do about it.
You gripped Will's hand even tighter, choking on sobs and your own gaps for air. Will watched helplessly, trying to calm you to no avail.
"Will," Crockett spoke, ".5 of versed?"
Will knew the last thing you would have wanted was to be sedated but your oxygen stats were dropping, even with the cannula. He nodded to Marcel, letting him know to go ahead.
He prepped the meds quickly and behind his turned back, when you caught on to what was going on you were already too far gone in your own panic attack to protest. Eventually, the versed did its job of calming you down enough to allow you to relax and feel safe.
"Sorry," You croaked, throat raw from the earlier events.
Will smiled, "You just had to see me again, huh?"
You laughed a little, the movement sending an ache through your stomach, "Don't make me laugh," You pouted holding your abdomen as if it would help.
Crockett watched you two with an amused grin, now that you had calmed down, he asked where you were hurt.
Will had to give you his stern 'I'm the eldest so you do as I say' look, knowing how you and jay both resisted hospitals greatly.
"My right side," You explained to Crockett, gesturing to your right ribs where you had been cruelly sucker punched.
Crockett gently lifted your shirt off the area, even through his gloves you could feel how cold his hands were. He pressed against one of your ribs, causing you to let out a strangled, "Fuck," at the sudden pain.
Crockett smiled sheepishly, "Sorry."
You scowled at him, "Yeah, sure you are."
"Glad to see your humour is still intact," Crockett joked, laughing at Will who looked less than impressed at the two of you bantering.
You smiled at your brother, trying to reassure him that you were fine now. Even though your mind was still full of fog. Every time you stopped to think about it, you were brought back to the events in your living room.
When Dr Marel finished his prodding, he said he would get you on the waitlist for a CT, but that it might take some time. You had to bug Will to go back to his shift, promising that you wouldn't pull a Jay and try to break out. He had only agreed after Hailey promised she wouldn't let you leave either.
"How's Gallo?" You asked Hailey, having not seen him since the ambulance.
Hailey smiled, "He's alright, Sarg took him back to the precinct until we figure out the best way to handle all this."
"Okay," You replied, sighing at the idea that this wasn't all over, just yet.
After the CT scan Dr Marcel assured you and Will - although mostly Will - that you had no broken ribs, but some gnarly bruises that might leave you stiff for a few days. You had grumbled about not being able to go back to work and Dr Marcel laughed at how irritated Will looked.
Hailey had helped you get dressed in some clean clothes, some of your sweats she'd nabbed from your apartment. She helped you put on a zip-up, apologizing at your winces when you had to move too fast. Will had given you a gentle side hug as you and Hailey left, promising that you could crash at his.
After you got done at the precinct and relayed your statement for the umpteenth time, Jay drove you to Wills. He hovered more than usual, giving you his jacket to keep you warm and letting you know he would go to your apartment and grab some of your stuff.
“You don’t have to go out of your way,” You laughed, letting him bring you a coffee.
“I won’t be,” Jay replied, gently squeezing your shoulder, “Working the case remember?”
Tumblr media
It took a week for you to get back to work, the bruising had gone from purple to green, looking more gnarly than before. It didn’t hurt so much anymore, at least not enough that you couldn’t work. You walked into the firehouse at the start of your shift expecting the ‘surprise’, but it still scared the living daylights out of you. When you walked into the common room, there was no one around. Expecting them all to be gathering in the locker room like they normally did, you thought nothing of it.
When they all rounded the corner into the room shouting you jumped hallways to the roof.
“What on earth?” You asked, laughing as they handed you a small box.
“Ah,” Hermann waved his hand, “Just open it.”
You laughed, flipping the box open to reveal a plastic police badge. Immediately you burst out laughing, “A police badge?” “Yeah! Seeming you got Intelligence that case, you’re like a cop now,” Gallo joked, playfully elbowing you.
“Oof,” You grabbed your side, slightly doubling over where Gallo elbowed you.
Brett was at your side instantly, grabbing your arm and asking what was wrong. Gallo had gone pale, looking terrified he had just hurt you again.
“Are you alright?” Kidd asked, coming to stand next to Brett with her eyebrows knitted.
You straightened up, dropping your hands, “Yeah, I’m fine.” You grinned, “Just wanted to mess with Gallo.”
Everyone laughed, cheering about how it was good to have you back. Gallo grabbed you into a hug, complaining about how that prank was cruel. You sat down to have breakfast with them all, telling Gallo, “It’s payback for that god-awful date you set me up on.”
Being back to work was exactly what you needed. As much as you loved your brothers, they were hovering a lot and it was nice to get back to a little bit of normality. Your apartment was being repaired, the landlord taking her time and dragging her feet about the ordeal. So, living with Will had meant everything still felt strange. Your truck never treated you any differently though, being back sitting with Gallo and Carver in the truck was the best you’d felt since the incident.
After a couple of shifts, you’d fallen back into the rhythm of it all, you and Will worked differing shifts so you would often get home to him leaving for work or vise versa. The more you were back on the job the more you started to forget the whole incident. You were at Molly’s one night after shift when Jay and Hailey had come to chill. They had let you know if passing the case was still unsolved and that the police chief had set them up on another case seeming that one didn’t have any leads. You didn’t mind much, it was easier to leave it in the past. Besides, the men who had attacked you and Gallo in your apartment had been locked in prison out of state, you barely had to testify seeming the entire encounter was captured by your neighbour's security cameras. You had gone back to your normal life, responding to fires and car crashes and the occasional ‘how did they get stuck there’ calls.
“All Units, Structure fire, S Canal St.”
You all jumped into action, suiting up and climbing into the rig.
“S Canal street? Isn’t that warehouses?” Carver asked.
“Yeah,” Kidd replied, frowning at her screen.
When all the companies pulled up the address, all of you climbed out to see the seemingly abandoned area.
“Where’s the fire?” Severiade asked no one in particular.
You were all suited up, Truck, Engine and Squad prep with SCBAs with no fire to respond to.
“Spread out, see what you can find,” Kidd ordered. You, Violet and Brett walked around the side of the warehouse to see if you could find anything. As you were approaching the back of the building you saw a door left open.
“Lieutenant,” You spoke to the radio, “There's a door open on the B side near the back.”
There was no reply, you frowned and tried again. When there was still nothing you turned to Brett and Violet, “Maybe the radios are down?”
Brett frowned, trying her radio to no response.
“Help!”
You looked back into the warehouse, trying to decide what to do.
“Okay,” You sighed, “I’m going to go in, maybe you guys can go back and get the others?”
Brett looked apprehensive but agreed, telling Violet to go get Kelly and Stella while she grabbed the gurney. You walked into the warehouse, grabbing your tac light and turning it on to look around.
“Fire Department, Call out!”
There was no response, the warehouse was so quiet you could hear your footsteps echoing off the walls.
“Fire Department, Call out!” You repeated. This time you could hear a reply. As you headed further into the warehouse you heard a loud slam. You frowned, turning around to see the door you entered from was shut.
“Brett?” You spoke into the radio, “Anyone copy?”
You started to get uneasy, there was something wrong here. Turning back to where you heard the victim last, you came around a corner to see a room full of machinery.
“Fire department!”“Here!” As you stepped into the room, you knew for sure something was wrong. It felt like your entire body was charged with nervous energy, the hair on your arms standing on end. You had got to stop getting into these situations.
You raised your halligan a little higher, ditching your flashlight and opting for the more weapon-like thing you had. You tried to check every corner and crevice as you walked through the room, but there was nothing to see. Or nothing that you could see. You walked around the final corner where you saw a man lying on the ground, half under what looked like some kind of crusher.
“Sir?”
You took an apprehensive step forward, lowering the Halligan. As you did, you felt the smooth metal of a blade being pressed above your collar.
“Drop the bar.”
You did as you were told, letting the metal clang to the ground and offering the suspect your hands. The man who was on the ground got up, simply sliding out from where he was.
Just my luck.
The man lowered the blade and grabbed our hands, pushing you forward towards a door back to the main warehouse room.
“...stead… do you… rep…”
You were dragged from the first floor to the basement, zip tied at the wrists and forced to your knees. A man with a rifle stood at the doorway, wearing the same black military tac the men t your apartment were wearing.
‘Is this about the drug den?” You demanded, “Because I told your buddies when they destroyed my apartment, I don’t know where the police put your stuff.”
One of the men walked up, your mind immediately started to go over the features you could see from how covered he was.
6’2”, brown eyes, white.
“I don’t believe you, Lady firefighter.”
Texan accent. Texan Accent?
“Why would I lie to you?” You snarled, “I really don’t feel like dying in the dirt and I’m clearly not a cop.”
You could hear the smile in his voice, “I don’t care about the product anymore, love.”
“Then what?”
“You got four of my best men locked up.”
“Clearly they aren’t the best if they got themselves locked-”
His fist slammed hard into the side of your face, sending your head snapping to the side. You could taste the copper in your mouth from the blood. You licked your lips, feeling the split that started bleeding.
“Halstead… …are you…”
Texas reached for your radio, he fiddled with the buttons as if trying to inspect its functions.
You pointed to the button on the side, “You hold that button to turn it off,” You told him, smiling pleasantly knowing it would irk him.
“...firefighter Hal… …respond… …you copy…”
Kidd was sounding more and more frantic in the broken bits you could hear.
Texas was clearly getting fed up with the interruption, he held down the button on the side. The radio crackled signifying it was relaying to the team.
“You know, they will call the cops if I don’t respond,” You said, trying to act casual.
“Let them,” Texas hissed, “You’ll be dead before they get inside.”
He let go of the button, frowning at it and waiting to see if there were any more responses.
“...Repeat that…”
“...CPD… the way…”
“You fucking bitch.”
You smiled, teeth stained red from the blood on your lips, “You really should know how to use a radio, jackass.”
Tumblr media
Violet came running around the corner up the Kidd and Severide as they stood trying to figure out where the caller is.
“We found the entrance,” She told them, “We heard someone, Y/N went in”
“Alone?” Kidd demanded.
Violet nodded, gesturing to Sylvie, “Brett had to get the gurney, our radios aren’t working.”
Severiade gestured for Violet to lead the way to the door as Kidd rounded up the rest of the company.
When they all got to the door, they realized it was locked tight.
Severiade tried opening it, pulling it to no avail.
“We could force it open?” Stella asked.
Kelly frowned, gesturing to the door, “It’s an old-style security door, the hinges are on the inside.”
Kidd turned to him, “Something doesn’t seem right.”
“I agree,” Kelly responded, looking up the building for signs of other ways to get in.
“Can squad get the door open?”
“Yeah,” Kelly replied, “But it’ll take some time.”
As kelly started barking orders to the gathered firefighters, Kidd stepped back at tried the radio.
“Halstead,” She spoke into the radio, “Do you Copy? Report.”
There was no response.
“Our radios weren’t working at all before,” Violet offered, “Maybe there's some kind of interference from inside?”
The group watched as Cruz and Severiade made slow work cutting through part of the door, trying to find a way to break into the door. They had to keep replacing the blades to the saw that broke, making the job tedious.
“Halstead, are you okay?” Kidd tried again
She sighed, “Gallo, Carver, did you find any other entrance?”
Carver shook his head, “Only an old garage door, but it’s bolted up from what we could see.”
Kidd sighed, knowing the best chance would be to get you on the radio somehow.
“Firefighter Halstead, respond. Do you Copy!”
There was a crackle in everyone's radio.
“...know… …call the cops…”
Everyone grimaced at the sharp scratch the radios made.
“... dead before…”
“That wasn’t Y/N,” Mouch noted, it was definitely a male voice who spoke the second time.
“Y/N, can you repeat that?”
Silence.
“Dispatch, this is truck 51 requesting immediate police backup. We have a possible hostage situation here.”
“Copy that, Truck 51. Patrol is on route.”
“Halstead? CPD is on the way, what’s going on?”
Tumblr media
Adam took the stairs two at a time, bounding into the Bullpen and telling them all to be quiet. He turned the volume up on his radio.
“...Units on the city-wide, any available units to 1399 S Canal St, Truck 51 reported a possible hostage situation with a firefighter.”
Jay stood up from his desk, grabbed his phone and called you. The phone rang and rang but you didn’t pick up. He frowned, searching through his contacts until he found Stella Kidd's name. He only had her name for emergencies and this was definitely one.
“Jay?” Kidd answered.
“Stella, what’s going on, we heard dispatch call for cars to your location.”
“Listen,” She responded, “Y/N went into a warehouse and the door locked behind them, we can’t reach them on the radio. We got a broken bit of a conversation, she said ‘call the cops’ and a man responded ‘dead before’.”
Voight immediately ordered the group to tac up and head to the location, knowing how important this was to them all.
When they all arrived, they joined the firehouse at the side door. By now, Squad had almost got the doors open, they only had to pry them open with the jaws before it would all be a go.
Voight ordered everyone but Severiade and Cruz back to the trucks, but the firefighters all stubbornly refused.
“We’ll stay out of the way but we gotta be close, what if they need us?” Kidd had argued.
Voight didn’t have time to argue, letting them stand far enough from the door that they wouldn't be in the line of fire if there was an offender at the door.
“Ready?” Severiade asked the gathered officers. “On three. One, two, three.”
He and Joe pulled the door open, getting out of the way for the 7 police officers to rush inside.
The team quickly and quietly cleared every room, making it around the basement until they found the stairs to the basement. Voight gave them the clear to make their way down the stairs, letting Kevin and Torres lead the way. At the bottom of the stairs there looked like there was nothing. The room was pitch black, the only light from the teams flashlights.
Kim sweaped her flashlight across the room, "Hey, Adam?"
Adam joined her side, "What is it?"
Kim pointed to a door, a large metal vault door similar to the one outside. It was cracked open slightly, sending a slight draft around the room.
Adam nodded, gesturing for Kim to lead the way to the door. Adam opened it and Kim lead the way into the next room. The room was less a room and more the landing to fire escape.
Kim called out to the rest of the team, they all gathered on the landing, coming to the same conclusion, the suspects had left the building and now they were playing catch up.
Tumblr media
All you could think about was all of the times Jay told you about these kinds of cases, about how he and Atwater found Kim through Kim's persistent efforts. How most of the time victims had to fight to be found. He mentioned once how he responded to a call as a patrol officer, to find a women had jumped out of a moving car to avoid being kidnapped. At the time it was his way to teach you to be careful, but you were freshly 21 and laughed him off.
You really should have payed more attention.
It hadn't been long, definitely less than an hour since Texas had forced you out of a fire escape and into the back of a car. You'd given about as much trouble as you could, kicking him in shin when he'd shoved you into the care. You knew it had to hurt with your uniform boots, but he didn't seem too happy about it.
You had passed at least two blocks and tried to count, but the warehouses made it hard to focus. The driver turned down a street and then into a car junkyard. You would have laughed at the irony had it not meant upsetting Mr texas more.
When he and the driver got out of the car, they stepped away to talk to a new person you didn't recognize. She was at least dressed like a normal person if more fancy than you would have thought necessary for a junkyard.
As a last-ditch effort you tried the radio, "Lieutenant, do you copy?"
There was no reply. You were on your own.
The door was thrown open and you were dragged out of the car. As if they finally remembered they were kidnapping a firefighter, they roughly grabbed your SCBA and threw it to the side, ditching the equipment somewhere near a line of crushed cars. Texas and the driver grabbed you by the arms and pulled you along the gravel until you were towards the back of the yard. You kicked and screamed, trying to break the ties on your wrists or bring any kind of attention.
They threw you on the ground, Texas brandished his revolver and pointed it at you. All you wanted to do was scream and plead, but there was no time. The gun went off and you hit the ground.
The first thing you recognized was the PASS alarm. It was far enough away that it was slightly muffled, but you could hear it clearly through the yard. You hoped that maybe someone would hear it over the traffic noises going on around you. Any sense of fight had left, it was clear this wasn't a kidnapping it was an execution. Now all you could do was lay hopelessly in the dirt.
Tumblr media
"Dr Acher, Dr Asher, we got incoming!"
"Brett, talk to me!" Hannah called as she joined gourney rolling through the doors.
"Y/N Halstead," Brett started to rattle off, "GCS 9, perforating head wound. CPD found her in a car yard, no idea how long she was there."
Will had to hold Jay back from barrelling straight into the room, trying to persuade him that it would be okay without fully believing it himself.
"Page Neuro," Dr Archer ordered, "Let's get a CT and push fluids."
Hannah's face was hovering over you, you could feel a sharp pain in your chest as she performed a sternum rub.
"Y/N?" She pressed, "How are you feeling?"
You groaned, trying to swat her hand away but being held back by the nurses. Everything was moving so fast, it felt like your head had been hit by a sledgehammer. Any sense of time or spacial awareness was gone. It was like an out-of-body experience, but not the fun kind.
When you were next aware of your surroundings, your hand felt clammy. You forced your eyes open and grimaced at the brightness. You pulled your hands towards your face, trying to block the light.
"No, hey, don't," Jay protested, grabbing your hands and pulling them away from the bandages on your head.
You frowned at him, unable to muster up any more energy to fight him. You were half asleep, the feeling of not knowing if your dreaming or not. Jay was at your side, holding your hand. You wanted to tease him about how clammy his hands felt, but talking was too much energy. Hailey was beside Jay, she smiled brightly at you and pulled a blanket higher around your body.
After a while Will came into the room carrying coffee cups, he grinned when he saw you half awake. He gently pulled you into a hug, helping you prop yourself up on the bed.
"I don't get a coffee?" You croaked, attempting a chuckle that ended in coughing.
Will helped you sit up, holding your arm as you coughed like a child.
He and Jay helped you lay back down, Will fussed over the monitors and jay pulled the blanket back up again. You lazily pushed his hands away mumbling about being fine and he was smothering you. Jay ignored you and continued fussing.
You spent 3 weeks in the hospital, Dr Abrams had kept telling you about how lucky you were to be alive - let alone spend such a short time in the ICU. During that time, Will and Jay were almost always around. If they weren't, it would be someone from 51 or all of them.
You had woken up one day to the entire lot of them crammed into the room, somehow managing not to wake you with their rowdiness. They had all teased you about the situation,
"Only you would get yourself in that situation, Halstead," Violet joked, playfully poking your arm.
You had shrugged and proclaimed you wanted the paid time off.
When you were released, Dr Abrams had schooled Will on everything to look out for, warning the both of you to be on high alert. You were expecting it, but still the scolding only made Will more protective.
He always doctored you and Jay, but now it felt like he was less your brother and more a live-in doctor. Staying with him meant you didn't have to worry about your own apartment - which you had essentially been evicted of. And gave both Will and Jay peace of mind. It also meant that Jay could come around whenever he wanted because he had a key.
Will had found you both on the couch one day after his shift. Jay was watching some rerun of a hockey game and you had your legs thrown over his lap, completely passed out covered in blankets.
Even after you had gotten much better, Will insisted that you stayed with him. Jay had teased the two of you were lonely and had gotten used to each other's company and neither of you could argue because he was right. You had been cleared by Abrams to do light duty and got to play Fire Cop alongside Lieutenant Seager. Joe hadn't stopped giving you shit about it. Every time you came to Molly's he'd declared, "The fire cops here!" and envelope you in a massive hug.
After almost 8 months of doing nothing and working a desk job, you finally managed to beg Boden and Abrams to sign off on letting you back on Truck. The company had been functioning without you for so long that you worried they might eventually have to replace you. It took more convincing Jay to let you go back to work than Will. Will knew you were stronger than ever - having come with you to most of your appointments. Jay however, was worried about you getting hurt again.
You had rolled your eyes and said, "what like you do?"
Hailey had to hold in her laughter at the stare off the two of you had.
You'd sworn your brothers and Boden to secrecy, knowing they would accidentally tell the house if you didn't tell them to keep their mouths shut. You'd even gone so far as to bum a ride off Will, not wanting to let them know you were there.
You'd walked into the briefing room when Boden was declaring there was a new addition to Truck. You hadn't known he had set you up for an entrance - which made it all the more amusing for you when you walked into the briefing room and they all but exploded with excitement. Violet and Brett were the closest to you, they both jumped out of their chairs and pulled you into a hug. When you pulled away, Gallo and Ritter were pulling you into their own hugs.
When the hugs and welcomes were done, you felt like you were finally home. Things were back to normal, sure they were different than before, but maybe even better.

Walking across the stage of your high school graduation ceremony you felt blessed. Looking through the crowd for your family and beaming as you made eye contact with your dad. Jay felt proud of you, as proud as he could be, his daughter had accomplished one life goal in a long list of good things to come. Right at his side was your uncle Will and Hailey -your dad’s girlfriend- the other two people who meant the absolute world to you right here sharing this moment with you. As the students reunited with their families you ran to yours tackling your dad in a big embrace which he returned immediately.
“There’s my girl. Let’s get to Molly’s” he whispered the first part to only you and looked at his brother and girlfriend nodding as a sign to leave.
“Wait Molly’s?” you asked confused as Hailey threw her arm around your shoulders guiding you out to the parking lot
“Yep, Trudy and I went all out on your celebration party. Everyone put a little of their own help in it” she said chuckling as she remembered Trudy barking orders at the girls from Med, PD and CFD
“You guys didn’t have too, honestly” you said shyly as you all reach your dad’s truck. Smiling slightly as you heard your uncle scoff from beside you
“Nonsense, you deserve it” Will responded winking at you and kissing your head before you all climbed into the truck pulling off to the familiar bar.
You couldn’t be more grateful because even though life had thrown stones in your way you had finally graduated from high school and one step closer to your life goals. Knowing you owed everything to your dad who hadn’t given a second thought to always saying present to every moment of your life. You were blessed to have not only your immediate family -uncle Will, your dad and his girlfriend Hailey- but you were also part of a bigger family which was your Chicago chosen family.
Here's the thing, a little back story, when your “mother” found out she was pregnant she made it clear from that moment that she wouldn’t be a part of your life. You knew that a couple of weeks after you were born she packed her stuff and left with no trace behind. Your dad had shared the story when you were mature enough to understand both sides of the story and to know that it hadn’t been your fault she left, making sure you knew you weren’t guilty of it.
She had her own struggles with depression and addiction but that’s a story for another time, she wasn’t prepared to be a mother period. Jay tried looking for her but at the end he gave up if she didn’t want to be part of your life then that was on her. You thrived nonetheless, which brought you to the now, all of your family in one place. Each people in their own conversations but nonetheless being in the moment to celebrate you.
“Here’s to my beautiful, smart and not so baby girl. I’m so proud of the young woman you turn out to be. I couldn’t be happier to call you my daughter. To Y/N!” Jay spoke raising his beer at you as the Intelligence table -plus Will- cheered for you.
“Thanks dad” you said as you wrapped your arms around his waist tucking yourself in his chest as he pecked your head.
“Love you baby” whispered as he caressed your back slightly
Because you had turned out better than he initially thought possible. Even if most times he doubted himself as a single father you both managed to make it work and today was prove of all of it.
Everything was going smoothly, you had gone around the bar sharing laughs with some of 51 and med. Until a strange and uninvited guest appeared through Molly’s door, Jay instantly tensed up at the sight of the woman. She must’ve been familiar to the people on the bar because everything went silent and there was an uncomfortable feeling lingering. As she made eye contact with you, she proceeded to get closer making you take a step back -you didn’t know who she was-. Your dad and uncle took a step in front of you, Hailey rushing to your side while you took her hand.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Jay harshly said,
“Y/N baby. It’s me, mom” she ignored Jay, talking directly to you.
At the words she spoke your eyes widened looking at the back of your dad’s head. He shook his head, jaw tense and a glare on his face -not believing the audacity of the woman-. How dare she? Come back after 17 years and pretend nothing happened. No one dared say anything but you knew the feelings were all mutual, everyone felt some kind of way towards the woman standing a couple of feet in front of you.
“You lost that privileged a long time ago” Will said, glancing over his shoulder making sure his niece was alright
“Sarah, I think you should leave” Kelly spoke trying to de-escalate the situation. There were too many emotions running high and he wanted to protect you from it all, as everyone else.
“C’mon Y/N. The least you can do is help me! I’m ready to be your mom.” she said almost hatefully, making you flinch slightly
“Hey, cut it out-” Jay yelled said before being interrupted by you
“Seriously!” you said tears in your eyes that you refused to let free as you looked at Sarah, a relieved look crossed her face -she really thinks I’ll pretend too- you thought
“Honey-” she said trying to reach for you being met with Jay pushing her hand away
“Don’t even think about it” he said warningly, towering over her shaking his head
“I’m her mother, besides I just need a couple of dollars” she said scoffing, which broke your heart along with the shaky breath that left your lips.
She wasn’t here for you, she just needed money. It made you sadder at the thought of looking at the woman who gave birth to you standing here and not feeling anything familiar towards her. She was a stranger, a stranger with a biological tittle that at the end of this night didn’t mean anything at all.
“No. It’s too late. Are you serious right now?” you exclaimed a pissed look on your face mixed sadness
“Get over it Y/N, I wasn’t ready” she said rolling her eyes
“And you think dad was!? Do you think he was ready to be a dad and a mom for me! Do you think I was ready to grow up without a mom. Huh?”
“Y/N, I’m here now, am I not?” she answered nonchalantly shrugging her shoulders
“You don’t get to abandon your daughter and then show up 17 years later pretending it didn’t happen! Are you kidding me Sarah” the situation was turning into a screaming match and everyone knew it wouldn’t end well.
“I’m your mother!” she yelled pointing at you stepping towards you
“Hey! Don’t yell at my daughter” Jay shouted on top of her screams putting his hand in front of you to prevent her from coming any closer. Sarah was about to say something to Jay when you interrupted her
“No! You are selfish! Not everyone that gives birth is a mother you’re living prove of it! She is my mother, she is my mother too and her, and her. Every woman in this place is my mother! I don’t need you to come and try to fix things and pretend we’re family…can you please leave!” you exclaimed as tears rolled down your cheeks
“You!” she pointed angrily at Jay and then looked at Hailey with hatred in her eyes. She saw how you held hands with her and she felt replaced, not that it mattered.
“You made my daughter cry. You better leave now!” Jay pointed towards the door before starting to go back towards you
Now standing next to you his arm around your shoulders running his hand up and down your arm as you rested your head on his shoulder. The others tried to slightly guide Sarah out of the bar, but of course she didn’t want to leave without making a scene.
“You think you’re special. What are you, my replacement!” she screamed at Hailey, as Will and Kelly tried to guide her out of the bar. This made the detective leave her spot from beside you stepping towards Sarah, now toe to toe with the woman. The force of Hailey’s glare made her recoil slightly, Hailey was intimidating when she wanted to be.
“There was nothing to replace. Leave. Now” Hailey said in a tone so cold it made shivers go down your spine.
“I’ll kick her ass if she doesn’t leave chuckles” Trudy said unamused as she stood next to Hailey arms crossed matching her usual cold tone and stoic face
“You won’t be doing it alone, Platt!” Leslie said from the bar, making Gabby and Kim nod in agreement
“Damn right!” Maggie commented from one of the other tables agreeing with her friends
If Sarah wanted to make a big deal, they were ready turn it into a big deal. You had practically the whole city at your corner and they would have your back no matter what. Because while the man were “politely” trying to get Sarah out the woman were ready to jump the woman.
With one last look towards your figure tucked at your dad’s side she scoffed turning around and leaving.
“And…the witch is gone!” Adam yelled, making everyone chuckle slightly, including you.
“I think you meant the bitch!” Leslie muttered but since the bar was so silent her comment was heard by everyone in the bar.
Gabby elbowed Shay giving her a ‘are you serious’ look and gesturing towards you. Because after all she was still the woman who gave birth to you and the last thing they wanted was to offend you or make you feel worse.
“Shit. I’m sorry Y/N, she’s not a bitch” she shook her head raising her hands in surrender as you gave her a small smile.
“Nah I think she is a bitch” you agreed,
“Hey. Swear jar miss” Jay said looking down amusedly at you while everyone tried not to laugh, slowly returning to their own conversations.
Jay guided you to the table and sat next to you thinking how Sarah had ruined the night for you, he wished he could change things like this, but sometimes they were inevitable. Hailey sat on the other side taking your hand and giving it a slight squeeze to which you smiled before letting go.
“Damn sarge. I wanted to see you throw hands” Kevin said to Trudy as she passed next to the intelligence table ruffling your hair teasingly and winking before walking back to Mouch.
“Even I was ready to throw hands and I don’t even know the woman” Vanessa said raising her hand, while you laughed.
As the table started talking between themselves Jay glanced at you caressing your head at the contact you too glanced at him.
“You okay, hon?” he asked low enough to just be heard by the both of you. You smiled nodding
“So that’s Sarah, huh” you sighed, Jay following suit
“I’m sorry” he turned his eyes away sadly before meeting your eyes again
“Don’t be dad. Now that I met her…I’m really glad she didn’t raised me. I wouldn’t change my life for anything dad. You are the main reason I am, who I turned out to be today” you said resting your head on his shoulder as he sighed. Resting his head on top of yours and closing his eyes trying to hold the tears,
“And you are my greatest accomplishment. From this point on I’ll just be prouder of you than I already I’m” a smile on his face, that you matched. As your head still rested on your dad’s shoulder your eyes casted around the bar, looking at the faces and all the people that had made your life as blessed as you could’ve wished.
