A long post about Filial piety from my point of view (Part 1)

First of all, I think I need to make things clear: this is not a philosophical post nor sth religious, political etc. This is just a post for me to talk about something that is happening to me involving household problems, parental problem, and some of principal Filial piety that making me thinking, cause Idk how long can I carry on without letting things off my chest. Yes, I should have came up with a more close-to-the-ground title, but it's 2 a.m now and I don't have enough energy for brainstorming. Also pardon me if you find this post somewhat hard to follow. I just write down things that came up in my mind, I will edit them later if conditions are met. English is also not my native language, so excuse my grammar and vocabs.

I came from a common family. When I said "common family", I meant it. My parents are both blue collar workers. Both growing up in the time of Vietnam concentrated economy, both dropped out of school as soon as they were able to earn money. So, yeah, not really coming from a long line of artist or scholar lineage. And heck we definite don't have a penny to our name

Mom used to work in a clothes factory as long as I could remember, until the paycheck no longer be able to cover the expense. She retired, .Even now she's still doing the same thing, picking up orders from shop owners, doing her parts, and delivering the products back. She's the one responsible for the tuition fee of me and my brother, and so far , she's the one putting me through college. Tbh, though I'm helping her as much as I can , I am not really fond of her job. Back in the freshman year, I many time found myself felling desperate while helping her ironing the details.

Dad works many years as a security guard for a real estate corporation, in which my uncle works as a desk-job-worker (idk what's his position, but he definitely helped my dad landing his job). He used to be assigned to some of the comp establishment, until finally rooting in a wet market near house. Back in the day, he also worked as a somewhat motorcycle tavi driver (it's like Uber drive, but for bike, and before the apps), but as time went, he got older, and Idk if he is still doing this, but it's less likely, since he's really adapting to the modern technology (but to somewhat degree, it's still causing troubles, but I will get to that).

We lived as a nuclear family (4 members, recently adopted a dog, so 5), but my fatherside relatives literally live next door, and we all live in smalls houses in a small alleys, pretty much counted as an extended family. So, yeah, I grew up from a typical-minimum-wage common Asian nuclear-extended family. To be frank, the minimum wage is only achieved some what when I was in the secondary school. I remember many time my aunt have to bring over food for my dinner cause there's nothing on the table beside white rice, fish sauce, boiled vegetable and water of it. And especially as an Asian family, we are still very much influenced by traditions and customs, and undoubtedly, Asian generational bad habbit.

Let's start with the less problematic one, my Mom. As a child raised by an 100% pure-blood, out-of-mold Asian mom, I can assure you that those memes on the internet about them is very much true, more or less. Cause growing up, there's two things I can be sure my mom has for me: expectation, and strict parenting. As far as I can remember, the first essay I wrote at school was "Write a letter to a friend and talk about your dream job", and I pretty sure I wrote that I "...want to be rich, and to achieve that dream, I will go for financial college...". I was 7-8 then. I liked super heroes, I liked games, I like toys like other boys...and for some reason, that idea has been implanted into my mind since childhood, and I'm pretty sure I didn't get that from my dad.

"...But she's your mom. It's normal for her to have high hopes for her kids..." . Yes, I'm not blaming her for that. And to be honest, compare to many other typical Asian moms, her expectation for us is much more simple: all she wants is a house in Dalat to enjoy her old age there alone.

(For those who don't know, Dalat is like a resort city in my country. Located in the highland region, heavily influenced by French architecture, well known for its fauna diversity, it's like those European travel destinations, but in Vietnam.)

In short, she wanted to have a problem-free, carefree future, and sure, that's the least thing I can do for her, since she's the one that looks after me all the time. One thing about Asian household is that it's heavily matriarch, and mine is no exception. My mom is the one taking care of our needs (she bought clothes, toys, anything we want that appropriate), our academic performances (she paid the tuition fees, and she spent everything she had just to give us the best education) and especially our health. I was born with some physical flawns, the "God perfected, and I defected/ I was made wrong" problems, especially with the testicles, and many time in my growing, my mom had to be the one paying my medical bills AND taking care of my sick little body. I remember when I was in the age of ten, I went through a major operation, it was mom who had to go around, borrow money from every person she knew to pay for the operation and medicines, and it took her quite a while to pay it all back. Even now, whenever I feel under the weather, it's still my mom that I go for to tell about my condition.

But back to the main point, she takes care of us, it's obviously we have to take a good care of her, no doubt. But growing up under her wings, there's one thing that really holding her from being a perfect mother (I know I sound like a dick here, but tbh, I haven't found a way to address this differently), at least in my view: overcomparison, both herself and others in her household to other. See, in our Vietnamese culture, there's this thing called "con nhà người ta" (the other kids). Growing up, you will be constantly be compared to those other kids. You didn't get a good mark in the exam? "Those other kids could make it, why couldn't you". You said that the other kids couldn't do better? "That's the other kids problems. It's YOU problem". In short, the perfect comparison/ excuse to be yelled at.

And in my case, it's somewhat worse.

Cause to me, that other kid did exist.

And she was my aunt.

She was two year older. And unlike me, her household is much more stable. She went to prestige schools, and her academic performances is way better. She's also well behaved and hard working, etc.

In short, the perfect Golden Child

Don't get me wrong. I love my aunt (that sounds a little bit wrong, but yes, I do love her). We are really close (probably somewhat due to our small age gap). She's always like a sister to me. And nowadays, I usually come to her when I need advice at all sort of stuffs (We're also major in I.T, so yeah, a lot of advices needed).

But growing up being compared to her is not a pleasant memories, though I don't really have much problem with that.. Mostly when my mom made those comparisons, it's after the parent-teacher meetings, and usually in those meeting, I was said to be "troublesome", more or less. But tbh, before high school, I wasn't sure if I was such a headache. A little bit talkative in elementary, mostly bad hand writing in junior high, nothing serious. Yes I admit I was full blown awful in high school: late attendance, skipping class( due to being late), dozing off in class, etc. And nowadays, hearing my mom recalled those meeting, I don't think the problem was as big as an elephant like it seemed to be.

I cannot be objective about this, cause now looking back, I'm not sure if I was a well-behaving. You see, as a tailor, my mom used stick and ruler a lot. She used to had this one particular stick that was like carved from a intact wood body. So slim, yet so thick that every time you swang it, you could here the sound of the air splitted, and when it hit the flesh with enough force, it would leave a mark that lasted for days.She used to use that stick to spank us, disciplined us when we're not well behaving. And unfortunately, I'm the elder one. I grew up with smacks on my bottom, so much that one of my aunt had to warn my brother to behave cause "You didn't get smacked in the butt as much as your brother did". And usually the reason I got smacked, as I can recall, was probably because I was lying, or I ripped pages out of my notebook. My brother was lucky that it got lost somewhere.

But the worst case of my disciplining didn't involve the stick. It was when I in the 2nd grade. Mom was still a factory worker, Dad usually home so he made lunch for me. I used to walk home during noon time, and go back to school at the begining of the afternoon. There're those shops near school that sold toys and candies which many times caught my attention. As a kid, I didn't have much allowance. So, when I saw some cash lying around, being on the altar for spiritual reason, or around for some reason, I constantly took some of them. Things got worse, to the point I started pick pocketing my parent's wallet. Soon after that, no doubt that my mom caught me red handed. And comes one of my biggest childhood trauma moment: my mom walking into the bedroom, with a knife. And I can still remember she saying "It's you or me. Your choice". It seems that my dad had a bad habit of stealing money from my mom, even before I was born. So seeing her kids following that footstep is not an option.

Another time I broke her heart is nack in junior high. I usually hang out at the internet cafe (it's like the arcade center, but with computers) near my school which was conveniently near my house. My mom was already having a bad impression about those places, deeming them as "nests of bad habit", plus the senior year of junior high was considered more important than the highschools, due to the entry exam that you can only participate once in a lifetime. You could say that she was more or less sitting on the fire then. And because I went to a local school, she got a pretty tight grip of my schedule. I was caught red handed being in those place no less than five time. The worst time was when she decided to smashed that one usb I used to download film into so that I could watch them at home (we didn't have wifi nor pc at home back then). I did recall it clearly that I said "Why don't you just unalive me already?". I didn't really remember what happened after that, but I'm pretty sure we didn't see eyes to eyes for at least a week. And yeah, back then my concept of life and stuffs was pretty twisted, probably affected by things considered "edgy". And that's definitely the most stupid thing I have ever said. Nowaday, I don't even dare to address any problem that unthoughtfully. But yeah, words for future parents: brace yourself for the tween/ teenage, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

But well, as I getting older, I realized that all of those high expectations and strict parenting was so that my brother and I can grow up to be "decent people". She has sacrificed most of her life to this family, to us. So much that even when considering thing from a respective point of view, even I couldn't ask for more (and it will be ungrateful if I ever let those thoughts out loud). Even though I used to think that her hopes and dreams for me was strangling me, or still I think that putting all your hopes and dream on the shoulder of your kids to carry is not the most suitable things, I can't deny that everything she has done is for our best, and so I try to meet some of her expectations. I got into university, "The top university of engineering of the whole nation" more precisely (it's like MIT in comparison), so at least she has sth to be proud of so far. I had this job as a English tutor in my first few years in college, when I always use my paycheck from that to help her with the bills. And yeah, I am still going to hold my end of bargain, I will tried to help her get her dream house, sooner or later.

And for my money problem, tbh nowadays, I don't even want to ask money from my parents (only when I need to refill the bike, and the account is lower than the minimum withdrawn threshold), let alone steal it.

But, as all things in life connect to each other one way or another. My mom habit of comparing somehow affects to the major problem in my household: my Dad.

P/s: I intended to make it all into one post, but yeah so much things to say that I have to consider. And because my Dad is , in my pov, more of a problem than my mom has ever been, I think I have to deliver this carefully.

She is the founder of the Pagliani Panksta and her name is Pagliani she came up with the concept and she came up with the idea and she designed the motorcycles for women and small men. And she made some changes and made the chopper to try and hook my husband and it would have words if she got him the advertisement but Dave was blocking it and she would ask nice go around him 100 million times and try it a lot one day she thought she had success and nope it was a hard knock kicker 5150 no that's what she did for though and I helped design it and you have a right behind you and our chopper looks much nicer it says it does and it's really still a decent look and OK yeah the tunTTLESO K well shut up thougTTels want to speak but really you see the design. It's a huge huge deal that she designed it and I assisted in additional ladies bike and I want to make the small one and the big one the chop choppers and I want to make the sportster type. Say that this is a huge deal for women and they they can get this done and we can help and I want to work on it while I'm on vacation and that's a good reason to and he said he's wanted to help and try and get it going and BG is in love with this chopper mini choppers are still in style but the rebel type bike is always in style it's just a regular motorcycle and it's full size more or less and the mini chopper is not that small and BG admits it wasn't laughed at it was a chopper but not a massive chopper but still it was nice and it worked and he says the exhaust can be loud and that's all you need it was fairly loud but we have new exhaust systems he says and he wants to put one on and test it it's a good idea so he says this is a great idea and he's heard it before and yeah it sounds cool that's the important part it can sound cool look cool and really choppers don't go that fast and a lot of them have signal cylinders believe it or not and so he's gonna get going on that not gonna assist I don't see why this shouldn't be a huge idea there's a lot of parts available and they're not in China and we need to use them and we need to get it going so he has several ideas that still people in the Midwest of his and he needs the bike they all do and I don't know why they don't do stuff but anyways I'd like to work on that and he's gonna help he's a great idea

Learning Objectives

By the end of this assignment, you will be able to model hierarchical data using trees. You will also be comfortable implementing recursive methods which take advantage of the fact that the data structure you are working with is recursively defined. You will learn how to convert a tree into a flat, two-dimensional structure, and, finally, you will strengthen your knowledge and your comfort with using inheritance in Java.

General Instructions

This assignment contains 3 parts. You need to download the files provided. Your task is to complete and submit the three following files:

Block. java

PerimeterGoal. java

BlobGoal. java

. Do not change any of the starter code that is given to you. Add code only where instructed, namely in the “ADD YOUR CODE HERE” block. You may add private helper methods to the three classes you have to submit, but you are not allowed to modify any other class.

. Please make sure that all the files you submit are part of a package called assignment3.

. You are NOT allowed to use any class other than those that have already been imported for you. Any failure to comply with these rules will give you an automatic 0.

. Do NOT start testing your code only after you are done writing the entire assignment. It will be extremely hard to debug your program otherwise. If you need help debugging, feel free to reach out to the teaching staff. When doing so, make sure to mention what is the bug you are trying to fix, what have you tried to do to fix it, and where have you isolated the error to be.

Submission instructions

. Submissions will be accepted up to 2 days late. Remember that you each have 2 free late days to use this semester. Any additional late day will be penalized by 10 points per day. Note that submitting one minute late is the same as submitting 23 hours late. We will deduct points for any student who has to resubmit after the due date (i.e. late) irrespective of the reason, be it the wrong file submitted, the wrong file format submitted or any other reason. We will not accept any submission after the 2 days grace period.

. Don’t worry if you realize that you made a mistake after you submitted: you can submit multiple times but only the latest submission will be evaluated. We encourage you to submit a first version a few days before the deadline (computer crashes do happen and Ed Lessons may be overloaded during rush hours).

. Do not submit any other files, especially .class files and the tester files. Any failure to comply with these rules will give you an automatic 0.

. Whenever you submit your files toEd, you will see the results of some exposed tests. If you do not see the results, your assignment is not submitted correctly. If your assignment is not submitted correctly, you will get an automatic 0. If your submission does not compile on ED, you will get an automatic 0.

. The assignment shall be graded automatically on ED. Requests to evaluate the assign- ment manually shall not be entertained, and it might result in your final marks being lower than the results from the auto-tests. Please make sure that you follow the instruction closely or your code may fail to pass the automatic tests.

. The exposed tests on ED are a mini version of the tests we will be using to grade your work. If your code fails those tests, it means that there is a mistake somewhere. Introduction

This assignment consists of implementing a visual game in which players apply operations such as rotations to a recursive structure in order to work towards a goal. The main data structure can be represented with a quad-tree (i.e. a tree in which each internal node has exactly four children). The rules are simple, but the game is still challenging to play. The game board resembles a Mondrian painting, and you can easily pick the color scheme that is most appealing to you. This assignment is adapted from an assignment created by Diane Horton and David Liu from University of Toronto.

The Game

The game is played on a randomly-generated game board made of squares of four different colors, such as the following:

Each player is randomly assigned their own goal to work towards: either to create the largest connected “blob” of a given color or to put as much of a given color on the outer perimeter as possible.

There are three kinds of moves a player can do:

. rotating a block (clockwise or counterclockwise),

. reflecting the block horizontally or vertically (i.e. along the x-axis or they-axis if you imagine

the origin of the axes being place in the center of the block), and

. “smashing” a block (giving it four brand-new, randomly generated, sub-blocks).

After each move, the player sees their score, determined by how well they have achieved their goal. The game continues for a certain number of turns, and the player with the highest score at the end is the winner.

The Game Board

We will call the game board a “block”. Blocks can be recursively defined; a block is either:

. a square of one color, or

. a square that is subdivided into 4 equal-sized blocks.

The largest block of all, containing the whole structure, is called the top-level block. We say that the top-level block is at level 0 (i.e. it would be at the root of the quad-tree used to represent it). If the top-level block is subdivided, we say that its four sub-blocks are at level 1 (i.e. these would correspond to the children of the root in the aforementioned quad-tree). More generally, if a block at level k is subdivided, its four sub-blocks are at level k + 1.

A board will have a maximum allowed depth, which is the number of levels down it can go. A board with maximum allowed depth 0 would not be fun to play on since it couldn’t be subdivided beyond the top level, meaning that it would be of one solid color. The following board was generated with maximum depth 5:

For scoring, the units of measure are squares the size of the blocks at the maximum allowed depth. We will call these blocks unit cells.

Moves

To achieve their goal, the players are allowed the three type of moves described above. Note that, smashing the top-level block is not allowed, since that would be creating a whole new game. And smashing a unit cell is also not allowed, since it’s already at the maximum allowed depth. What makes moves interesting is that they can be applied to any block at any level. For example, if the player selects the entire top-level block (highlighted) for this board

and chooses to rotate it counter-clockwise, the resulting board would be the following:

But if instead, on the original board, they choose to rotate (still counter-clockwise) the block at level 1 in the upper left-hand corner, then the resulting board would be the following:

Of course, the player could have chosen many other possible blocks on the board and they could have decided to perform a different type of move.

Goals and Scoring

At the beginning of the game, each player is assigned a randomly-generated goal. There are two types of goal:

. Blob goal. The player must aim for the largest “blob” of a given color c. A blob is a group of orthogonally connected blocks with the same color. That is, two blocks are considered connected if their sides touch; touching corners does not count. The player’s score is the number of unit cells in the largest blob of color c.

. Perimeter goal. The player must aim to put the most possible units of a given color c on the outer perimeter of the board. The player’s score is the total number of unit cells of color c that are on the perimeter. There is a premium on corner cells: they count twice towards the score.

Notice that both goals are relative to a particular color. We will call that the target color for the goal.

PART - 0: Familiarize yourself with the starter code

Let’s start by getting comfortable with the code provided and the idea behind the block data structure.

As mentioned in the introduction, we will be using a quad-tree to represent the structure of a block. Quad-trees are trees in which each internal node has exactly four children. It would not make sense for us to use a tree in which nodes could have a different number of children, say three. This is because a block is either solid-colored or subdivided; if it is solid-colored, it is represented by a node with no children (i.e. a leaf), and if it is subdivided, it is subdivided into exactly four sublocks.

Open the Block. java file and familiarize yourself with the provided code in this class. Note that the class has the following fields:

. Two ints, xCoord and yCoord, representing the coordinates of the upper left corner of this Block. Note that the origin, (0, 0), is the top left corner of the window, and the window has the following coordinates:

. An int size representing the height and width of this Block. Since all blocks are square, one variable is enough to represent both.

. An int level representing the level of this Block within the overall block structure. The top-level block, corresponding to the root of the tree, is at level 0. As already noted, if a block is at level i, its children will be at level i + 1.

. An int maxDepth representing the deepest level allowed in the overall block structure.

. A Color color. If this block is not subdivided (i.e. if it is a leaf), then this field stores its color. Otherwiwse, this field should be null.

. A Block[] children representing the blocks into which this block is subdivided. The children are stored in this order: upper-right child, upper-left child, lower-left child, lower-right child. If this Block has no children, then this field should store a reference to an array of length 0.

Before beginning to write your own code to complete the implementation of this class, let’s get more comfortable with the Block structure. Start by drawing on paper the quad-tree representing game board from Figure 1 (assuming the maximum depth is 2):

Each node should contain the values that would be assigned to their corresponding Block objects. You can assume that the size of the top-level block is 16. How many nodes have you drawn?

NOTE: If you come to office hours, we will ask to see your drawing before answering questions!

Now that you can draw the block structure on paper, can you translate it into code? Inside the main method of the Block class, create a Block object that corresponds to the same game board above. You can access constants representing the Colors needed from the class GameColors. Once you have created the board, you can display its text representation using the method printBlock() provided to you. If the structure has been created correctly the following should be displayed:

Invariants. While thinking about the block structure, you might have noticed that each nodes must satisfy a lot of invariants for the tree to correctly represent a Block. Here is a list of some of them:

. Nodes have either 4 children or 0.

. If this Block has children then:

– their maxDepth is the same as the one of this Block

– their size is half that of this Block

– their level is one greater than that of this Block

– the position of their upper left corner can be determined from their size and the position of the upper left corner of this Block (I’ll leave it up to you to figure out how).

– the color of this Block is null

. level is always smaller than or equal to maxDepth

TEST and DEBUG. Please note that to test and debug your code you should not rely on the GUI. The GUI can definitely help fine tune your code, but you should test and debug it before using it. The method printBlock() provided to you displays a text representation of the block and can help you through this process. Remember that you are allowed and encouraged to add as many private helper methods as you wish. This will help you to: keep your code cleaner and better organized, as well as break each task into smaller steps. All of this will in turn help you when testing and debugging.

PART - I: Set up the board (30 points)

With a good understanding of the data structure, you are now ready to start working on the completion of the class Block.

[10 points] For the game, we want to be able to generate random boards. This is what the constructor Block(int lvl, int maxDepth) is for. The method generates a random Block with level lvl, and maximum depth maxDepth using the following the strategy: if a Block is not yet at its maximum depth, it can be subdivided. Decide whether or not to do so as follows:

. Use the Random object stored in the field gen to generate a random number in the interval [0, 1). Please note that you should generate this number if and only if it is possible for this Block to be subdivided.

. Subdivide the block if the random number is less than Math. exp(-0.25 * level), where level is the level of the Block within the tree.

. If a Block is not going to be subdivided, use a random integer to pick a color for it from the array of colors in GameColors. BLOCK COLORS . Make sure to generate the integer in the appropriate range, and use gen to do so.

Notice that the randomly-generated Block may not reach its maximum allowed depth. It all depends on the random numbers generated.

This constructor is responsible for assigning the appropriate values to the fields of all Blocks within the Block it generates except the fields size, xCoord, and yCoord which should be instead initialized by default. Next, you will write a method that can be used to correctly initialize all these fields.

Make sure the invariants are all respected! The method should throw an IllegalArgumentException is the input for the size is invalid, i.e. if it is negative or it cannot be evenly divided into 2 integers until the max depth is reached. [10 points] In order for the game to be able to draw the blocks you can now generate, you need to provide an implementation for the method getBlocksToDraw(). The method returns an ArrayList of BlockToDraws. Open the file BlockToDraw. java to familiarize yourself with this data type. The list returned by getBlocksToDraw() should contain, for each undivided Block:

. one BlockToDraw in the color of the block

. another BlockToDraw in the FRAME COLOR (see GameColors. java) and a stroke thickness equal to 3.

Note that a stroke thickness equal to 0 indicates that the block should be filled with its color. The order in which the objects BlockToDraw appear in the list does not matter.

After having implemented this method, you can try to run BlockGame. If you use the seed 2 when initializing the Random variable gen on line 17 of Block. java and you select 2 as the maximum depth when running the game, you will see the following board displayed:

PART - II: Make the game playable (30 points)

Time to make the game real by allowing players to be able to select a block from the board and apply a move of their choice.

[12 points] The first thing to do is implement the method getSelectedBlock() which allows the game to retrieve the Block selected by the player. In order for the user to play the game, they must be able to select a block on which they would like to make a move. They will do so by clicking on the board at a desired location, and using the up and down arrows to choose the level of the block. The method getSelectedBlock() takes those inputs (the (x,y) coordinates of where the user clicked, and an int representing the level selected), and finds the corresponding Block within the tree. If the level specified is lower than the lowest block at the specified location, then the method returns the block at the location with the closest level value. Note that if a Block includes the location (x,y), and that Block is subdivided, then one of its sub-Blocks will contain the location (x,y) too. This is why the level is needed to identify which Block should be returned. Please note that you can view the quad-tree representing the block data structure as a search tree. As such, this method should run in O(h), where h is the height of the tree.

Input validation: if the level provided is smaller than this Block’s level or larger than its maximum depth, then the method should throw an IllegalArgumentException. If the position, (x,y), is not within this Block, then the method should return null.

For example, using the seed 4 when initializing the Random variable gen online 17 of Block. java, the following snippet of code generates a board with maximum depth 3, top left corner in position (0, 0), and size equal to 16.

To successfully perform a reflection, the same operation should be propagated to all the sub-blocks of this Block. Make sure that the method correctly updates all the necessary fields. The method throws an IllegalArgumentException if the integer received as input is neither a 0 nor a 1.

happy friday chat

so now that this week is over my next week seems pretty chill. i want to get through my first SAT textbook this weekend bc of that. but anyways heres what i completed:

got all my math homework done and im actually working on mondays work, but im not sure if i got 100s on the quizzes so im a little nervous about that

made more progress on my project though

i also asked the first violin in my orchestra class (lets call him vick) for help and met up with him earlier. we didnt find a solution but vick said there is a solution itll just take time to find

dream smp high school au and what they'd teach:

i had to get it out of my system but i'm so happy with how these turned out

mr notfound: engineering (the engineering teacher never really teaches and kinda sits in his office but the entire school simps for him so there's always a teacher hanging with him. his curriculum is free form and an easy A but genuinely pretty damn fun)

mr. nap: gym (hes the nice gym teacher who says screw the pacer test and rope climbing and you guys just play basketball after running like 2 laps. he's super gullible and will let anyone sit out for any semblance of pain. that is until the film teacher comes into the gym, then he's a tryhard beating freshman up to make layups on lowered hoops)

mr. wastaken: physics (the coolest class that always does crazy expiriments with large falling objects and questionable usage of dry ice, people always think his experiments are fake but he'll be the first to give a class long lecture on why every single piece of his work is 100% accurate. there was this one incident when he used the engineering teacher to explain torque and it ended with mr. notfound being caught in his arms. there's pictures but he still denys it.)

mr. blade: advanced english lit (mr. blade has no time for freshmen and if he does like a frosh into his class they've gotta he the damn best. his class is based on old literature analysis and storytelling. his favorite unit being greek mythology. most of his assignments aren't just boring essays or stressful discussion. no one truly knows what mr. blades class is like until you've taken it, they're often heard chanting "blood for the blood god" before exams but the principal is yet to do anything about it.)

mr. awsamdude: comp sci/coding (sam is the teacher everyone adores, there's usually at least two people crying in his office before and after school but he always knows what will cheer them up! he tries to work closely with mr. notfound but he's busy with the physics prof so sam has gotten really close with his TA tubbo. they do all kinds of coding competitions and his class is known to be a safe haven for students of all kinds- "coding is for everyone!" he always chants)

ms. nihachu: art (known for the classroom with the best vibes niki insists on dropping the ms. and formalitys. she's the teacher with lofi playing and bean bags and couches in her beautifully decorated classroom. she has an open classroom meaning anyone can come in anytime and she is dedicated to making sure no one eats lunch alone. a couple times a year she goes on a huge rant about loving oneself and the value of not judging others, needless to say everyone adores her - especially the theatre kids as her class is constantly helping them with set design)

mr. soot: music/theatre (does he have a degree? unknown. does he teach anything besides music? couldnt tell ya. mr soot roams the halls during class hours that aren't his one choir period; popping into various classes to pretend to be a student or just all around goof off. his theatre program however, one of the best. he makes the most extravagant plays and musicals with barely any budget. after his show goes on he goes dark for like 2 weeks straight "recuperating" but no one questions because that kind of genius needs resting)

mr. frost: math (ant and red would TOTALLY teach math together and it would be so cute everyone would see them walk in and out of school together and ship them and their classroom would be a safe space for people to come out or even just hangout. ant would be a crazy good teacher who is understanding and not one of those asshole math teachers. he's the one everyone always wants to have haha)

mr. jacobs: film/freshman history (mr jacobs is the freshman heartthrob and senior best friend. he teaches film as history, film as lit, and frosh history - basically the easiest classes, but he makes them the most fun. in his lit classes they watch cartoons and search for literature similarities or historical evidence. in his history classes he goes on grand lectures often standing on tables to reenact his favorite history moments. occasionally he brings in his friends to re create a massive fight in front of all the history classes, it's scuffed but everyone always looks forward to them)

ms. puffy: head counselor (ms puffy is the sweetest soul and often is helping students with everything from their personal lives to college. she assigns the TA's and classrooms and works closely with mr minecraft to make the school as conducive of a learning environment as possible.)

mr. minecraft: the principal, the big man himself, mr fuckin minecraft. (he constantly looks sleep deprived and exhausted but he loves the students and teachers with his whole heart. he takes no shit from annoying parents or asshole students and is known to ban the entitled cruel students from all his favorite teachers classes, leaving them with the worst teachers. usually he can be found telling dream he can't have more money for explosives, begging wilbur to sleep and rest, and telling techno he's gonna have to teach a english 9 class eventually. that and dealing with his new TA's.)

our lovely teacher assistants:

ranboo: english TA (thought he was gonna get art with niki but puffy out him with the blade. originally he was terrified but he's growing on mr. blade with his deep analytical thoughts and similar dry humor. granted- he does have the most work of all the TA's because mr. blade makes him grade all the multiple choice tests, but he's really starting to love the english classroom.)

tubbo: comp sci TA (tubbo had been begging to be sam's TA since freshman year where he took almost all the coding classes in one year. plus, the computer science room is right next to the physics room in the science wing so he can pop over and see tommy all the time. tubbo and sam stay in the computer lab way later than philza should allow but they've made magnificent codes for the school. everytime tubbo points out he's graduating soon sam starts to tear up, but he knows tubbos gonna do big things, he's just gonna miss his goofy TA.)

tommy: physics TA (the pounding philza got on his office door when tommy didn't get wilbur was ground shaking. puffy and philza calmly explained that tommy has a knack for physics if he would just focus and genuinely learn from dream. "big D" as tommy calls him, wasnt jazzed either. their year as TA and teacher started rocky but dream would come to realize that tommy is more talented than he lets on and after speaking to wilbur and puffy he realized there was a damn good reason he was given tommy. he took it upon himself to turn tommy into the best student he could be. and tommy isn't one to back down from a fight. little did he know this year would be the best year yet.)

i'm so happy with this and i actually think i might expand it idkkkk :)))

Midterms Week Check-In

Exams So Far

Hi everyone! I've got 2 exams down and 2 to go. So far I only know the grade for one of my exams (history) and I made a 78! That's pretty good considering most people failed terribly. The other exam (comp sci), I feel pretty good about. The other two exams are going...well they're going. The exam I'm most worried about is Geology. I have to read the textbook to study because I don't understand the content in class. That means I have to do a ton of reading. The other exam is for American Government and I am going to do some basic review for that.

Classes

For the classes that have already had their exams, I have altered my note taking techniques to help me on the next exam. For example, in history I am going to review my notes and rewrite them by hand since I type them in class. In comp sci, I'm going to focus on finishing my assignments early and do all of my homework assignments to 100%.

Health

One of the symptoms of my antidepressants is vivid dreams. This hasn't been a problem before, but in the past week or two I've had really bad nightmares. Last night was basically my breaking point. I had a terribly vivid dream that led to me being very upset when I woke up. I have a psychiatrist appointment today and I think I'll be going to therapy again.

Regarding my physical health, I've finally made it to a 5.5% incline at 3.0 speed for quite a while! I'm going to keep working to gt towards the 12% incline, 3.0 speed, for 30 minutes. I'm so excited!

Conclusion

Right now, I'm sitting in my school's Starbucks. I'm going to head home and drop off some stuff and then go to a career fair with my friend. Once done, I'm going to do my American Government studying. I'm doing good right now. I feel good and I think I'm going to be okay :).

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Ramble Fest Part 3 *Spoilers*

Day three: It's frustrating when the writing is good but everything is annoying.

Okay. Where to start. I should start with the last thing I heard. Professor Piper.

"This is college, what we do here is real."

Um... No.

More accurate? "This is college, what we do here is more pressure filled, but ultimately only slightly more real than high school."

Real my ass. And I say that as someone who has earned two degrees. What you do in college teaches you how to think critically, creatively, helps with perspective taking and working collabratively. All very valuable skills. But what you do? It's no more real then when you had to write a book report for 11th grade. No one is going to make you summarize Fahrenheit 451 before before giving you a job, just like no one is going to quiz you on Mendel's pea plants before approving a loan application.

What you do is a vehicle for learning how to think. And I wouldn't trust the fictionalized version of this college to teach anyone that considering how they set Cath up for failure. She tested out of English Comp and she didn't know not to use a fanfic for an assignment? Well, they do not test right.

I tested beyond Freshman level in writing and comprehension when I started college. Guess what I still had to take before they would even let me glance toward the section of the bookstore where the advanced writing textbooks were stocked?

Writing 101

What did I learn in writing 101? So many things! That even freshmen in college don't know how to properly use a comma (prof said she had to go over that with every class), that I would come to loathe the words "12 pt. Times New Roman", and (this is the big one) if you didn't think of it, cite it. Hell even if you think you thought of it, but someone else thought of the thing that made you think of it, cite it. If it didn't spring forth from your brain like Athena from the mind of Zeus, cite that fucker (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

And if you can't cite it, don't use it. I cringed when I got to the part where Cath used a fic for an assignment.

There is no accidemic citing that is the equivilent of a fanfic disclaimer (as far as I know, I haven't written academically for a couple of years and they change the citing rules fairly often). While I stand by what I said, fanfic is a valid form of writing, in that a talented fanfic writer is a talented writer, full stop, using charaters not your own for credit is the college equivalent of using them for profit. And Cath would have known that if she would have been made to go through intro writing like she was suppose to, because for whatever reason she did not learn it in high school.

It pissed me off because Piper sat there all sympathetic and patronizing "This was an immature mistake."

Mistake? Yes, the college's for letting a 100 level student into a 300 level class before she learned the technical parts of writing.

Ugh!

Now the rest. I like Reagan a little more, I liked that she asked if Cath should be on drugs and that she herself is on drugs, and it's a wonderful thing. And she's right. The proper drugs can be a wonderful thing for mental illness.

It makes me sad that Cath didn't tell her to fuck off when she decided to be Cath's friend because she thought Cath was pathetic.

I like Levi, though it took a while for him to become a more fleshed out character that Cath actually felt friendly with rather than just tolerant of.

Cath and Wren's dad is amazingly written. I love that Rowell puts so much effort into depicting mental illness in a real way. No one is a cartoon of a crazy person. Cath has an anxiety disorder, her dad is bipolar both are people with feelings, talents, interests and worries that don't center on their illness.

Something else I like about how Cath is written, too often I see anxious or depressed characters depicted as weak willed or mousey. Cath isn't, she just choses what to expend her energy on. She's got steel where she feels it's important.

She often doesn't text or call Wren out of pride. She doesn't let Piper's criticism and view of fan fiction stop her from doing something she loves. She has her stance set on her mother and she digs in her heels.

Well, Comp-Sci is obviously not everyone's cup of tea but chances are if you are curious to learn more about the subject (either as a hobby or career) it's a good idea to take a couple of intro/beginner courses to see how you feel about it before you major in it. It may be discouraging to hear some of your peers changing their majors from Computer Science saying that it's either "too boring" or "too hard". Most likely they either majored in CS because of only the pay or because they thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. But have no fear! As long as you're passionate about learning this totally awesome subject and are persistent through the challenging areas, you'll do great!

You may be doing this too often but are unaware of it. It's understandable if you have anxiety from speaking in the presence of a crowd or are too afraid that your question is too basic. Please don't feel this way! Most of the students in your class are in the same position as you, some are probably even more confused. When you ask your question in class you not only help yourself understand the concept better but you also allow the professor to explain the topic further which benefits the whole class.

*note: not all professors allow for questions in the middle of a lecture so take advantage of office hours to ask them questions you wrote in your notes.*

3. [make connections with your professors]

The reason why we're in college is to find something we love and make a career out of it, right? Well logically, one of the main steps of getting a career is to make connections with your professors! Businesses and organizations work with universities all the time; whether it's for on-campus events, internships for undergrads, or scholarships. Your professors know about these opportunities probably more than anyone else because they have to sit in meetings discussing them for hours and is why you should talk to them if you're interested in any of this stuff. Like I said before, take advantage of their office hours. Let them know you want to volunteer at events, apply for any internships, or apply for merit-based scholarships. Show them that you want to do more than just be a student and that you're ready to do more work for an impressive resume. I wouldn't have been able to get a fraction of the opportunities I did if it weren't for my professor's emailing me about them or writing letters of recommendation for me (which happened because I volunteered myself to work on projects even if it meant that sacrificing other responsibilities sometimes). In short: put yourself out there and get noticed.

4. [learn how to use online resources]

There's no avoiding staying up trying to work on a project that's completely boggling your mind. If you feel like you won't get it to work no matter what you do, don't worry because the internet is your best friend. It's no surprise the number of resources available on the internet is almost endless but what might surprise you is the number of solutions to the specific question you have. Yup, there are people out there struggling with the same problem as you and plenty of people offering different solutions. It's very important to remember that you shouldn't blindly copy/paste their solutions into your code if you don't how it works. You first need to identify what you did wrong and what their solution did right. This allows you to learn from your mistakes and prevents you from running into the same problems over and over again.

6. [avoid procrastinating!]

You already know this is a bad habit and if you don't do it, congratulations you can skip this part or you can continue reading. Procrastinating results in projects messily put together the hour before it's due (don't lie, you've been there) and professors notice it, don't think they don't. Procrastination is something we don't want to do but I'm not gonna sit here and say "stop procrastinating" because that won't work (it surely doesn't work for me), but I have some tips to avoid procrastinating.

a. Create fake deadlines for assignments that are actually earlier than the real due date! This tricks your brain to procrastinate according to the fake deadline but you'll still have time to fix and polish your assignment before the real due date. This works for me 100% of the time.

b. Work with your classmate(s) on assignments. We often procrastinate when we're working on projects alone because we are working at our own pace, which is usually avoiding doing it all week and cramming it the night before we turn it in. When you have a partner working on it with you it's required that you work at a steady pace in order to keep up with them and finish the assignment on time. You can either meet up with your partner after class or online. This tip works like a charm, it's motivated me to work on assignments that I've been neglecting when my classmates asked me "how did you do X in our assignment?" or "let's screenshare our code and work on it together!"

7. [explore different fields in computer science]

Computer Science is a very broad study that has many specific concentrations. Someone might have zero interest in machine learning but love cybersecurity and one who has no plans on learning how to create programs might have a passion for computer hardware. You need to explore different areas you feel like you might be interested in. Visit workshops on them or take a couple of classes at a local CC and see which you love the most.
