Movie #6 of 2020: Conan the Barbarian

Video
youtube
Screenwriter of the Sonic movies, Pat Casey, was recently a part of “The GHZ Podcast”, where he answered some questions and gave good insight into the production of the sequel.
The video contains spoilers. Here are some of the highlights:
(12:59-14:21) A previous draft of the film had Angel Island, before they settled on just the Labyrinth Zone temple. Knuckles was going to take Robotnik to the island, which was slowly falling apart without the Master Emerald, to show him why he needed the gemstone.
(14:49-15:40) SEGA didn’t like the idea of using the Master Emerald to turn Super, since that’s not how it works in the games...but the team feared that, by making the story about collecting the Chaos Emeralds, people would call the movie an Avengers ripoff. The backstory with the Chaos Emeralds being part of the Master Emerald was created as a compromise.
(23:06-24:00) Crazy Carl was in several drafts, they just couldn’t make room for him. He was meant to appear when Sonic runs around Green Hills, to show he has a friendly relationship with some of the townspeople. Jojo was also going to interact with Tails.
(36:15-36:52) SEGA is very aprehensive about the movies exploring Sonic’s powers and where they came from, so they can’t be too explicit about that. However, Pat Casey feels that as these movies become more successful, SEGA will continue loosening the reigns on some stuff.
(39:42-40:56) Originally, they wanted to do a “Rocky III” ending with Sonic and Knuckles starting a friendly rematch to see who’s truly stronger, cutting to credits right as the fight starts.
(43:10-44:03) Popularity aside, they chose Shadow because he’s a good match for Sonic, very different personality-wise. Unlike with Knuckles, the “power of friendship” wouldn’t work with Shadow, and Sonic has never had to deal with someone as emotionally damaged (except Robotnik, who he dealt with by murdering him)
(45:58-46:15) The film was going to end with Knuckles leaving Earth to guard the Master Emerald alone...but they thought that was way too sad of an ending for the character.
(47:50-48:16) While Longclaw killing all the echidnas is certainly possible, it’s not downright confirmed that’s what happened to them. “Do we know for a fact that Longclaw is even dead?”
(48:35-49:43) They were going to show what Knuckles got into after losing his tribe. There was going to be a sequence based on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Conan the Barbarian”, with Knuckles getting captured and thrown into the fighting pits.
(51:11-51:34) They talked about showing a little flashback of Robotnik’s childhood, his time spent on an orphanage ran by nuns. It was deemed too pointless to include, sadly.
(51:50-53:12) Pat Casey loves Rouge the Bat and says she makes for a great movie character, charming yet seemingly untrustworthy, but with a heart of gold. He also agrees that the movies need more female anthros like Amy and Rouge.
(54:56- 56:05) The first Owl Temple was originally in an Ice Cap Zone inspired planet rather than Siberia, but they thought a human bar would be less restrictive than designing an alien cantina. Sonic and Tails were going to stumble upon a Big the Cat skeleton in the snow
(57:11-59:35) They don’t want to use a Sonic character in a way that’s not respectful or satisfying like some comic book movies do. That’s part of why the first movie only had Tails on the post-credits scene, and why the scrapped lizard warrior wasn’t a pre-established character.
(1:02:17-1:02:46) Pat Casey agrees the film needed more Sonic music. He admits that, had he been able to, he would have picked something other than “Downtown Funk” for the dance sequence.
(1:06:31-1:06:55) They were explicitly told not to name the planets, that mobius line in the novelization was probably just the writer having fun. However, he thinks they originally had the word “mobius” thrown around somewhere to serve as an easter egg for fans.

Don't Burn These Witches!
Witches, witches, witches, this certainly was an episode about witches. It seems like every year somebody will tell you that 'witches are back' and that they're 'all the hype now'. That all started with Charmed.
Tumblr media
Emilio can hate this series all he wants, but without these three witches we wouldn't have... the reboot of Charmed...
If you made your way all the way to our Tumblr, you're probably here for some visual stuff. Like... comics! Black Magick is one of the best looking comics in the industry at the moment:
Tumblr media
Look at those colors and the lack of it!
Not everybody is a fan of The Witches of Eastwick, but come on, the cherry scene...

Can't hate that right?
And finally, Bayonetta.

#5yrsago Robert Howard explains the butchersome logic of empire to HP Lovecraft
Tumblr media
Robert E Howard's 1935 letter to HP Lovecraft schools Lovecraft on his unthinking acceptance of authoritarian dogma: "You express amazement at my statement that ‘civilized’ men try to justify their looting, butchering and plundering by claiming that these things are done in the interests of art, progress and culture. That this simple statement of fact should cause surprise, amazes me in return."
People claiming to possess superior civilization have always veneered their rapaciousness by such claims…
Your friend Mussolini is a striking modern-day example. In that speech of his I heard translated he spoke feelingly of the expansion of civilization. From time to time he has announced; ‘The sword and civilization go hand in hand!’ ‘Wherever the Italian flag waves it will be as a symbol of civilization!’ ‘Africa must be brought into civilization!’ It is not, of course, because of any selfish motive that he has invaded a helpless country, bombing, burning and gassing both combatants and non-combatants by the thousands.
Oh, no, according to his own assertions it is all in the interests of art, culture and progress, just as the German war-lords were determined to confer the advantages of Teutonic Kultur on a benighted world, by fire and lead and steel. Civilized nations never, never have selfish motives for butchering, raping and looting; only horrid barbarians have those.
There's some excellent material about the Howard/Lovecraft correspondence in Heroes in the Wind: From Kull to Conan, John Clute's anthology of Howard letters, essays and stories.

I am actually looking forward to the Elric of Melnbone saga making it into aud!ble in a few months, and in bundles to boot. I am not expecting a whole lot out of it (it is an old swords-and-sorcery fantasy series from the 60′s-80s) but it is one of those foundational modern fantasy series that i am mainly wanting to listen through them for academic reasons... much like i did the first few Barsoom books (up to Chessmen of Mars).
I am also going to prob toss in the Conan the Barbarian collection along side of it sometime this year (it’s been in my wishlist since 06-07-19)

Conan Exiles
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After playing Conan Exiles for a full month, grinding out hours and hours of game time with friends from all across the world that I have carried through from Ark: Survival Evolved, I can genuinely say that I have a sense of what exactly this game has to offer.
First of all, I want to thank the Developers of this game, Funcom, for taking time out their lives to make this gem. Conan Exiles is an Open World survival based video game that tests the limits of man. If you are a fan of these types of game, then boy have I got some good news for you! Conan Exiles offers the most versatile and complex survival experience I have encountered thus far, giving the player control of everything you can imagine. Everything from your religion and race to your character traits and abilities are customizable with progress, this creates a more unique experience per player on servers.
Conan Exiles is obviously based in the world and realm of Conan, which is an old franchise with a huge name originating as far back as 1932. The most famous version was the movie, where Conan the Barbarian is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think they used this name to create a sort of world and experience around that character and premise, however, you only really see Conan in the beginning when he cuts you down from a cross and give you some hardcore advice about surviving the vast land of the Exiles. There are monsters, animals, and NPC’s that roam this land, with some (if not, all) trying to kill you. Oh, and also, the environment is trying to kill you too, well not trying but it does. From sandstorms to brutal falls, you can pretty much die around every bend.
The game has its bug and glitches, which is perfectly fine. You are playing an open-world survival game that’s environment is continuously changing and molding, if you expect a flawless gameplay then your expectations and reality are skewed. The game runs perfectly and I experienced A LOT less challenges compared to playing Rust, Ark and Skyrim.
Visually, the game isn’t exactly fantastic. Independently, the game is subpar and definitely lacks that finish that gives AAA titles that “Je Ne Sais Quoi”. When comparing it to other similar type genre of games, the game is definitely one step above the rest, detailed and precise in comparison. There is one thing I can give this game and that is the distance rendering and anti-aliasing on things like distant sand storms, pure perfection and “eyegasmic”.
Having never actually played this previously on PC or XBOX, I was opened up to the Conan Exile world fresh and new, probably with a huge number of improvements before official release. The interface and menus are easy to navigate and pretty self-explanatory, which is great, considering that there is basically no tutorial, well barely. The game style and movements are a little rigid but smooth once you learn to maneuver your character through the different terrains. The building mechanics on Conan are definitely some the best I have seen. Besides being extremely hard to craft, the building can be fun and you can real creative with the non-restricted building type (TAKE SOME NOTES ARK). But gameplay, overall, is a great experience, the 3rd person really works here and this is probably my favourite open world survival user interactions thus far.
Overall, probably one of the best survival games in the market at the moment. With some rumoured patches coming through, like the ability to tame animals and use them as farmers, gathers, etc., I expected this game to only get better and better.

Canada
Canada, oh Canada, one of our favorite countries in the world, where half of the video games are made and half of the movies are filmed. We tried to talk about something other than Marvel superheroes, but it took a lot of effort to do so as you may have heard.
Our first title was the most Canadian of all, because it was written and drawn by someone who grew up in Canada, the characters are all Canadian and it takes place in Canada. So you wanna know what they look like?

From left to right: Heather MacNeil Hudson (Vindicator’s wife), Vindicator, up in the air is Aurora, the big robot is Box, right at the bottom is of course Wolverine, their old team mate, the fish lady is called Marrina, then there’s Northstar, the big guy is Sasquatch, the lady in white is Snowbird, next to her is Shaman, down below is Puck (what gave it away, the big letter P?) and lastly Shaman’s daughter Talisman.
Not in this picture - and why should he be - is Nick Knight, the protagonist of Forever Knight.

Go find some DVD of it and give it a try. Sure, Angel is the better series of the two, but it’s so charming and there is no bad CGI in it at all, because they didn’t use any. Just some colored lenses and fake vampire teeth.
When we discussed Until Dawn we didn’t discuss the cast much, so here goes:

Pretty impressive for a video game. But no matter how big the stars may be, they’re all going to die...
And then there is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We will never watch it again.
