Dynamic Villains and Engaging Backstories: Monaghan Shines as the Ultimate Nazi Creep

Vanguard is like most Call of Duty games—split into three main vibes. You’ve got a bunch of stuff to dive into: an epic campaign, some lit multiplayer action, and the thrill of blasting Nazi zombies to bits. If you’re looking to get in on the action, you might want to buy Xbox games to experience all these features firsthand. The campaign tells the tale of Task Force 1 trying to uncover a Nazi secret called Project Phoenix towards the end of WWII. It’s got this cool back-and-forth thing going on, with missions and flashbacks that show how the Task Force 1 squad became legends. Each character gets two missions, and the game kicks off and wraps up with full Task Force 1 missions. Even though Task Force 1 has six peeps, only four—Arthur, Polina, Lucas, and Wade—are hyped up as the main characters and Operators in multiplayer. The other two kinda get sidelined, but the whole squad is dope. They’ve got this solid team vibe that makes them feel real. You’ll catch them vibing together, throwing shade, and diving into their backstories, making the campaign super engaging. Dominic Monaghan’s Jannick Richter is the ultimate bad guy, a total Nazi creep who’s up against our heroes. Even with a gun in his face, you never really doubt that Task Force 1’s got the upper hand. Monaghan nails the villain role, bringing a genuinely unsettling performance as he toes the line of evil, disses Arthur with racist vibes, and starts questioning if his loyalty is worth it.

Engaging WWII Story with Familiar Gameplay in Call of Duty Vanguard

Vanguard’s campaign is pretty straightforward and cinematic, with no collectibles, side quests, or choices to make, which makes it a good option if you’re looking to buy PS5 games that offer a more streamlined experience. Some levels open up a bit, but you’ll quickly hit the limits and be rerouted to the main path. Cranking up the difficulty just makes enemies tougher and you easier to take down, stretching out the nine missions a bit but not changing much. You’ll get some epic moments, like jumping between two trains speeding through Nazi Germany or blowing up aircraft carriers in the Pacific. The war scenes and character stories are well-paced, even if the campaign is on the shorter side. What really pops in Vanguard’s campaign is the story and characters, offering a fresh, character-driven take on WWII. But gameplay-wise, it’s nothing new—we’ve seen this kind of action before. It’s not a bad thing, but the campaign feels like it’s just ticking off the “Yep, it has a campaign” box.

New Mounting Mechanics with Control Tweaks in Call of Duty Vanguard

Vanguard is a whole vibe compared to Treyarch’s Call of Duty style that’s all about pushing forward, but it doesn’t quite hit the same notes as Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare, even though it runs on the same tech. Coming off Black Ops Cold War, I got totally wrecked trying to play Vanguard like it was a speedy action fest. Vanguard’s fast-paced too, but its map design and destructible stuff—like walls, doors, and cover—call for a bit more strategy. Sometimes you get taken out from the sides or behind, especially on certain maps, while others stick to the classic three-lane setup with their own destructible features. Once I figured out how to play the maps right, I adjusted my game. I started sticking close to walls and objects, checking my corners, and playing way more patiently than usual. Honestly, it was pretty fun to discover a new playstyle and get the hang of each map’s vibe. I’m definitely here for Tactical combat pacing to avoid getting blasted right at spawn, but having the option to crank up player counts is cool too. Vanguard also brings back weapon mounting from Modern Warfare, which I missed in Black Ops Cold War. It even adds a new feature letting you slide along horizontal surfaces while mounted. Sledgehammer made it so weapon mounting kicks in when you ADS near a surface, but that can mess with your aim due to some annoying magnetization. Luckily, you can tweak the controls to ADS+Melee (R3) to mount, which works more like Modern Warfare and Warzone. Still, I’m lowkey puzzled why Vanguard’s default setting is different.

Potential for Year-Round Content in Call of Duty Vanguard

Vanguard’s real challenge will be how it handles post-launch content, since every Call of Duty now gets ongoing—and free—support for a year after dropping. Following the trend set by 2019’s Modern Warfare, Vanguard’s first Season kicks off on December 2. Expect three new multiplayer maps (plus Shipment coming sooner), a new Zombies main quest and Easter egg, extra unannounced Zombies stuff, and Warzone integration with a fresh Pacific map called Caldera. The one area that’s probably gonna stay pretty static is Vanguard’s campaign. With games like Destiny 2 dropping new Seasonal story stuff and missions all year long, it’d be cool to see Call of Duty try something similar. Overall, Vanguard feels like it could be Sledgehammer’s big break. With iconic characters, unique multiplayer maps, and solid integration into the Call of Duty universe, it sets the stage for what’s next, both for the year ahead and whatever Sledgehammer drops in the future.

Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the fourth installment in the Call Of Duty series. Unlike its predecessors, it broke away from being a WWII-themed game and took on the theme of modern combat instead. Developed over the course of 2 years, it was initially set for release for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows and was ported over to the WII as "Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare - Reflex Edition in 2009.

The character in game can be poised in one of three stances: prone, crouching or standing, each of which affecting the players movement, accuracy and stealth capabilities.

The game is the first in the COD lineup to feature modern-looking weapons, also introducing multiplayer mechanics such as killstreaks where a player can obtain a certain ability in game when they have reached a certain kill threshold without dying.

Team-based and deathmatch-based matchmaking is featured in different modes on various maps. Each mode has an objective that the player is expected to complete, using unique and variable strategies to make sure they reach the objective. Players have the options to call in UAV recce scans, airstrikes and attack helicopters when they reach three kills, five kills and seven kills as killstreaks respectively.

Last night as I was enjoying my daily existential crisis because this is 2020 and that’s just part of the terrain now, I lay in bed unable to sleep. Because that’s also a standard feature of 2020. Normally I try to distract myself thinking about fanfic plots, or reading something fluffy enough to counter the raging cesspool that is reality right now, but last night was different. Probably inspired by abject frustration at *waves hands at everything in general*, I imagined a very satisfying interview scenario. Maybe this will prove satisfying to others, at least in a “here’s five minutes of catharsis but nothing actually substantive” sort of way that’s been my primary coping mechanism as our nation falls unchecked into open fascism...

I present, my dream interview with Tonald Drump, Commander in Cheeto.

(under a cut in case anyone’s coping strategy isn’t compatible with my coping strategy. this is basically just a bunch of stuff i often find myself rage-yelling randomly all the time now)

Me: Thank you for agreeing to answer questions honestly and sincerely tonight.

Dumptruck: *blathering about how great he is for even deigning to meet with random blue-haired chick* *additional commentary on my appearance and not being “his type” or something he thinks will weaken me... pffft*

Me: Can you give us some details about your health care plan? You’ve been saying for years now that it will be the greatest plan, but haven’t put forth even a proposal on it. How can it be so great if you won’t even share the details of it with us?

Turducken: *is already repeating superlative adjectives because he only knows like six* *says nothing of substance before changing the subject to the care he received as if that were a standard available to everyone*

Me: You have to admit that your treatment for Covid-19 was not what the vast majority of Americans have access to, so it’s not fair to hold that up as a standard. Let’s pivot to the fact that your administration has chosen to do nothing to prevent the spread of covid, refusing to even institute a national mask mandate that could begin curbing the spread of the disease immediately.

Dumpsterfire: *interrupts to blather about how masks don’t work because Fauci said so in March* *repeats every lie he’s been telling since February about covid* *insists again that everything is great and we’re rounding a corner and it will all go away*

Me: You do understand that repeating lies does not make them any less false, right? It’s a simple concept, but please tell me that you do understand you can’t alter reality by insistently making stuff up?

Thunk: *insists he’s telling the truth and science is lying and reality is exactly how he describes it*

Me: *smiling sweetly* Again, repeating lies, denying reality in favor of your invented musings is called “magical thinking,” and most people outgrow the belief that their imaginings can alter reality by the time they enter elementary school. So I will ask again, do you understand that the lies you tell and your fantasy projections are incompatible with reality, and that repeating them again and again doesn’t change that fact? Or are you incapable of grappling with reality as it exists and expect it to bend to your will? Because, with all due respect, that’s not how any of this works.

Dunkaroo: *blathering and gibbering and not even bothering to look for an excuse to leave before bolting for the door, but he discovers that he is actually locked into the interview room with me and cannot escape*

Me: While I have you here, one more question. Why do you feel that the entire American populace needs to be placated the same way you and your vast ego need? Why do you think we’re all as incapable of confronting reality as you are? Using the excuse that you didn’t want the public to “panic” or “be afraid” of the truth about covid? Because being well informed and armed with An Actual Plan to combat the disease could’ve been presented as doing our patriotic duty. It could’ve been an opportunity to unite and uplift the nation as it has been in so many other countries. Yet instead you chose to divide, pillage, incite fear and confusion during a global pandemic that has become a national crisis and mass casualty event only eclipsed in the number of Americans dead by WWII and the Civil War. And there’s no end in sight, thanks to the incompetent bungling of your entirely corrupt administration. How do you defend yourself against the reality of your role in this abject national shame? Are you afraid and merely projecting your inability to deal with this childish fear onto the people you’ve sworn to lead and defend? Do you feel your ultimate failure of leadership and morality, or are you the soulless sociopath you appear to be on the surface? Or does any of this even matter to you as long as your fascist agenda succeeds? How much more do you intend to undermine and violate the U.S. Constitution you have sworn to uphold? What additional acts of treason do you plan to perpetrate before we finally eject you from the office you have demonstrated you are entirely incapable of serving?

inspired by the last one on my FIRST top five ask: top five historical figures people should appreciate more

Ooooh, let’s see....let’s first define ‘appreciate.’ I don’t know if these people are necessarily unknown, because if I’ve heard of them they must be mainstream to some level, haha. I won’t include Iva Toguri D’Aquino as she is a given, and most of the figures are going to be within the past century since that had been my specialty. How people end up on this list is really about how their stories have stuck to me for probably several years. As a note, I had specialized in European History/WWII, so that’s where most of these people are coming from.

1. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi--Let’s start with some complexity right off the bat, right? It’s probably a bit odd of me as a Chinese-American to name a general of the Japanese army during WWII as one of the top 5 historical figures, but I had been affected by his story since I was 13 or 14. He was the general of the Japanese army in the battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most brutal battles in the Pacific theatre, I think may be the battle with the most American casualties which was certainly due to his leadership and strategy. He’s incredibly interesting in that he actually pretty much opposed the war with America even before the beginning, and knew that Japan was biting off way more than it could chew, but still committed to his duty. Different from many other officers, he cared a lot about the bottom-rung privates and shared live with them even though he had access to privilege, refused to call for banzai attacks/suicidal missions so that his men would not die needlessly, and cared deeply for his family as shown through the letters still preserved in his memory.

And then on the other hand, he was the mastermind behind the Iwo Jima tunneling tactic that made it very hard for the Americans to take the island, and called for his soldiers to not die before taking 10 American lives. That’s pretty brutal, but also not unexpected for a general to say at the last year of WWII. I first came across his story from Letters From Iwo Jima and then picked up the biography that the film used as reference So Sad to Fall in Battle by Kumiko Kakehashi.

2 & 3. Wladislaw Szpilman and Wilm Hosenfeld. Their stories are intertwined so I will put them both in here. Szpilman was a Polish-Jewish pianist during WWII and is the one who wrote the autobiography (turned movie) The Pianist, and Hosenfeld was the Nazi officer who helped hide and take care of him when he found him hiding in an abandoned ghetto. Szpilman’s survival was so affecting and I don’t know, the fact that he still returned to music after all that hell really strikes me. He contributed to my love of Chopin, especially Nocturne in C# Minor.

Hosenfeld, as mentioned earlier, was a Nazi officer who became disillusioned by the party after he saw how they were treating the Polish and Jewish people, and joined a group of other disillusioned German officials who would give supplies, help, and protect to those being persecuted. He found Szpilman hiding in an abandoned place and they shared a really poignant (and true!!) moment. Unfortunately his story ends tragically, but Szpilman, another testament to the man’s mettle, did all that he could to try to rescue Hosenfeld even when he hadn’t known his name up until the very end, even after all the suffering that Szpilman went through. I had watched clips of the movie in class back in high school, and read the autobiography to understand more.

3. The anonymous people. I know this feels like a cop out but it’s true. That’s part of the reason why the anonymity of all the main characters of Dunkirk had struck me so much that that movie has honestly stolen my soul. History, while led by larger-than-life figures, is only made possible by the nameless people who no history book will commemorate. I was reading the book The Story of Christianity by Justo González and one of the points he made was that often well-known and martyred saints are credited with the growth of the early church immediately following Jesus being taken up to heaven, but in actuality the spread of the church was made possible by the peasants, the slaves, the sojourners who took their testimonies and that of Jesus and shared it with their neighbours or companions out in the field or in the market or by candlelight after a long day, who in turn shared it to others, and to others...and they don’t have names or official canonization (that I know of) or et cetera, but they changed the world. Also this statue (?) sums it up as well:

“For all the women who were silent and built history” rough translation based on my high school Spanish lmao.

But it’s true. And all the historical moments that really affect me are built on those who were anonymous.

5. A surprising contender not from the twentieth century is Irish pirate queen Grace O’Malley. Credits to my university friend for introducing me to her. Listen, you imagine if Hollywood ever have the guts to have a scene in a film where an Irish pirate queen from the 1500s was so formidable and powerful and caused such a ruckus that Queen Elizabeth invited her to court so that these two incredibly intimidating 50something year old women met face to face to strike a deal and you tell me that isn’t badass. They had to talk entirely in Latin because neither of them spoke the other’s language (Irish/English). LATIN. (Unfortunately, the results of the meeting were eventually moot, because Britain being Britain were like mehhhh we don’t need to live up to our part of the agreement, so Grace went back on her merry pirate way)

That being said, anyone out there PLEASE shoot any cool historical figures whose story has stuck to you my way!! I’d love to know!!

-Sgt. Slaughter is NOT the professional wrestler born Robert Remus, but received his codename due to a coincidental resemblance to said pro wrestler. That said, he did wrestle in college, where he majored in Classics. Note that he is still serious about his classics studies; he is fluent in both Ancient Greek and Latin, and is knowledgeable about not only Classical literature, but also the history, mythology, culture, etc. of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

-Alpine is mixed-race, having African-American, Caucasian, and Latin ancestry; people's efforts to pin him down to one or the other and inability to do so is a constant source of amusement to him.

-Lady Jaye is biracial; her father is as WASP as one can be without being a Boston Brahmin (although they're adjacent), while her mother is from Latin America; note that her mother's family is also filthy rich and aristocratic. Also, she's a distant cousin of Destro and Darklon.

-Rico is a character of our own creation, a Fillipina-American who's primary MOS is powered armor, specifically the Accelerator suit from Rise of Cobra

-Firewall is a young, Asian woman ala DDP rather than an older, Caucasian woman ala IDW.

-Riffing on Rise of Cobra, Breaker's parents are from Morocco.

-Budo periodically notes that both sets of grandparents spent WWII in camps; his paternal grandparents in an internment camp, his maternal grandparents in a concentration camp.

-Ripcord and Cover Girl have more-or-less their IDW backstories.

-Lifeline's aikido skills are such that he's one of the top ten best hand-to-hand combatants in GI Joe. Granted, his pacifist beliefs mean he rarely showcases them; "getting Lifeline in the ring" is a Joe colloquialism for a task that is very difficult and unlikely to end well for you.

-As with many other military regulations, the rules against fraternization are not strictly enforced for Joes, so Flint/Lady Jaye, Scarlett/Snake Eyes, and Jinx/Falcon are things.

-Dial-Tone and Hard Drive are A: female, and B: hot.

-Dial-Tone is the nerdiest nerd to ever nerd, or at least, as much as possibly whilst being an attractive woman. She also barely qualified to be a Joe physically. That said, she did, in fact, qualify, and is thus eminently capable of kicking your ass.

-Clockspring is kinda a creeper. He hasn't done anything explicitly against the regs, but he's come veeery close. As a result, Hard Drive, Firewall, Dial-Tone, and Hashtag frequently receive sympathy from other female Joes about having to work with him, which leaves them confused, because while Clockspring is aware of their gender, he slots them into his head as fellow nerds and doesn't creep on them at all.

-Clockspring also posts on a number of Incel/MRA/RedPill sites, although he keeps getting banned for telling other posters to take it down a few notches.

-Quick Kick has always been a movie guy; he got into martial arts because he realized that Hollywood is kinda racist and expects Asian-American performers to know chop socky stuff. That said, he turned out to be better at it than at acting, so ended up becoming a stunt double. Then the Cobra War happened, he joined the Army and eventually ended up in GI Joe.

-Freight, somewhat similarly, was a star linebacker, who walked away from a multi-million dollar contract to enlist when the Cobra War began. He greatly dislikes being compared to Pat Tillman.

-Contrary to what you'd expect, Freight and Red Dog (who could've been a star if he hadn't been tossed out of the NFL for frequent unnecessary roughness) get along really well.

-GI Joe's first fighter ace, somewhat ironically, was not Ace (who's codename comes form being a card shark), but Slipstream. However, Ace was the first Joe to become Ace In A Day.

-No one can remember Ghostrider The Stealth Pilot's codename, which he is surprisingly OK with, as long as they don't call him by someone else's codename...whereupon he will start calling that person by someone else's codename.

-All the Joe pilots are qualified to fly all Joe aircraft, with the possible exceptions of the Defiant and SHARCs, so Wild Bill can fly a Skystriker and Ace can fly a Tomahawk and Lift-Ticket can fly a Phantom and Ghostrider The Stealth Pilot can fly a Mudfighter and Dogfight can fly a Vector and Maverick can fly a C-130 or Dragonfly, etc.

-Quick Kick holds regular movie nights; Sgt. Slaughter is banned due to his habit of pointing out all the inaccuracies whenever QK puts on a sword-and-sandal flick.

-Roadblock and Heavy Duty are cousins. In addition to their size (which is not just "big" but freakishly its-a-miracle-they-don't-have-health-problems HUGE) and fondness for MOAR DAKKA, they also share a passion for cooking. Roadblock is a master chef, specializing in Soul Food and French haute cuisine (both nouvelle and classique), though he's also excellent at classic Italian and most American regional specialties. In general, Heavy Duty is almost as good and in some cases better (he is an internationally ranked sushi chef, for example), but rather than rely on a standard repertoire, he prefers to experiment, either with exotic foreign or newly-invented dishes he's just heard of or bizarre creations of his own; his success is...mixed.

-Quick Kick has a habit of reciting quotes from Little Caesar every time he runs into Rico in a hallway or whatever. She does not know that's what he's doing and is generally puzzled by the whole thing.

-Mainframe has a thing going on with Zarana.

-When Jinx and Falcon started dating, they got shovel speeches from Duke and Snake Eyes, respectively (yes, despite Snake Eyes being unable to talk). In addition, Storm Shadow kidnapped Falcon...then took him out to dinner, cuz he wanted to get to know his cousin's boyfriend. And because Falcon is Falcon, they ended up bar/club-hopping. Meanwhile, Duke, who only knew his baby brother was abducted by Cobra Commander's personal assassin, was ready to start World War III.

-Cross-Country believes he has a duty to reclaim the family honor he believes was lost when his ancestors took up arms to fight for slavery. His choice of outfit is bait, to trick racists and CSA apologists to make themselves known to him so he can punch them in the face.

-Quick Kick has a Japanese father and a Korean mother. As a result, when he fights the Red Ninjas, they call him a half-breed and talk shit about his mom. He deals with it by kicking their asses.

So, say, Shipwreck will fill it up with rhymes about cooking so people will think it's Roadblock, and Roadblock will do it in French and keep mentioning gumbo and gators so people think it's Gung Ho, and Gung-Ho keeps throwing in Star Wars references so people think it's Sci-Fi, etc. Duke hates doing it, so is very terse, so everyone always assumes he's Snake Eyes (which is hilarious to people who know Snake, who was an inveterate chatterbox before he became mute).

CIA VS KGB – Siapa Lebih Hebat?

Sebut saja Per-ang Dingin, nama Agensi Perisikan Pusat (CIA) dan Jawatankuasa Keselamatan Negara Kesatuan Soviet (KGB) tidak boleh dipisahkan. Semasa tempoh tersebut, kedua-dua agensi saling bersaing antara satu sama lain termasuk terlibat dalam per-ang proksi di sesetengah negara. Tetapi siapa yang selayaknya diangkat sebagai agensi perisikan terhebat dalam sejarah?

Sebelum dikenali sebagai KGB, kebanyakan aktiviti perisikan dan polis rahsia dikendalikan oleh banyak agensi sejak Revolusi 1917 dan Kesatuan Soviet ditubuhkan pada tahun 1922. Ini termasuklah Cheka (jawatankuasa anti-revolusi dan sabotaj Rusia), NKVD/MGB (Kementerian Keselamatan Dalam Negeri Soviet) dan MVD (Kementerian Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri Soviet).

KGB ditubuhkan sebagai sebuah entiti perisikan berasingan daripada MVD pada 13 Mac 1954 selepas pengganti Joseph Stalin, Lavrentiy Beria[1] disingkirkan dalam satu rampasan kuasa sebelum dihukum bu-nuh. Beria merupakan sebahagian daripada troika[2] yang bertanggungjawab mentadbir negara itu pasca-Stalin setahun sebelumnya. Bagaimanapun, pengenalan dasar-dasar baru yang drastik termasuk kemungkinan meredakan hubungan dingin dengan Amerika Syarikat membawa kepada kejatuhannya.

Bagi Amerika Syarikat pula, sebelum CIA ditubuhkan, kerja perisikan dibuat membabitkan pelbagai jabatan kerajaan tanpa sebarang kerjasama atau aturan. Selain itu, aktiviti perisikan juga bersifat sekali-sekala dan bukan sepanjang masa seperti dilakukan kuasa-kuasa Barat lain ketika itu.

Dengan tahun-tahun sebelum Per-ang Dunia Kedua (WWII), AS sendiri ketika itu masih mengamalkan dasar pemencilan dan enggan campur tangan dengan apa yang berlaku di Eropah. Akibatnya, rejim Parti Sosi-alis Kebangsaan (National Soci-alist) pimpinan Adolf Hit-ler muncul sebagai kuasa baru Jerman dan mencetuskan huru-hara dalam kalangan kuasa-kuasa Eropah seperti Britain dan Perancis.

Menyedari keperluan menubuhkan agensi perisikan mereka sendiri, Pejabat Perkhidmatan Strategik (OSS) ditubuhkan oleh Franklin D. Roosevelt atas nasihat Sir William Stephenson[3]. Agensi ini ditubuhkan dengan menjadikan Perkhidmatan Perisikan Rahsia (MI6) dan Operasi Eksekutif Khas (SOE) sebagai asasnya. Latihan dan kelengkapan perisikan turut disediakan pihak British sehingga pihak AS mampu berdiri dengan sendiri.

Begitupun, agensi ini dipandang sepi oleh sesetengah agensi kerajaan lain dengan cawangan ten-tera seperti Ten-tera Darat, Ten-tera Laut dan Ten-tera Udara menjalankan cabang perisikan masing-masing. Tetapi semua itu berubah semasa pentadbiran Harry Truman. Truman merasakan menjadi tanggungjawab AS untuk membendung apa-apa senario yang membawa kepada per-ang negara-negara daripada menjadi realiti terutama dengan Kesatuan Soviet.

Justeru, Akta Keselamatan Negara 1947 digubal sekaligus membuka jalan kepada penubuhan CIA dan Majlis Keselamatan Kebangsaan. Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter dilantik sebagai pengarah agensi yang pertama. Tetapi selepas kegagalan CIA mengesan aktiviti-aktiviti yang membawa kepada Per-ang Korea, ini membawa kepada semakan semula keseluruhan struktur perisikan kebangsaan AS.

Semakan dibuat oleh tiga panel Laporan Dulles iaitu Allen Dulles (bakal pengarah CIA), William Harding Jackson dan Matthias Correa. Dalam laporan mereka pada 1 Januari 1949, agensi, Jabatan Negara AS dan pihak tentera tidak bekerjasama dengan baik. Akibatnya, semua laporan perisikan ketiga-tiga pihak ketika itu dianggap bias, tiada kredibiliti dan berulang-ulang.

Susulan laporan tersebut, Truman melantik Walter Bedell Smith sebagai pengarah baru agensi. Smith menyusun semula CIA seperti yang digariskan dalam Laporan Dulles dan menjadikan agensi itu bertanggungjawab untuk semua hal ehwal perisikan AS. Sejak itu, ia dilihat setaraf dengan agensi-agensi perisikan lain termasuk MI6 dan pesaing terkuat mereka, KGB.

Walaupun dianggap mentah dalam dunia perisikan, tiada siapa menafikan keberanian dan kebijaksanaan perisik CIA semasa menjalankan perisikan mereka. Pada Mei 1962, agensi itu mendapat tahu pihak Soviet terpaksa meninggalkan stesen perisikan mereka di Artik berikutan keadaan cuaca yang terlalu sejuk dan cabaran logistik. Untuk mengelak terkandas, semua ahli penyelidik dibawa keluar sementara landasan terbang masih boleh digunakan.

Bagi pihak KGB pula, antara kejayaan signifikan agensi itu ialah mencuri maklumat yang membentuk kapal angkasa mereka Buran pada tahun 1974. Idea pembinaan kapal angkasa itu dilihat satu usaha signifikan untuk mengatasi keupayaan aeronautik dan angkasa lepas AS serta memuaskan paranoia pemimpin Soviet, Leonid Brezhnev.

Brezhnev mula gelisah selepas melihat kejayaan program Apollo pada tahun 70-an dan menyifatkan ia berpotensi sebagai pembawa b0m. Bagaimanapun, idea tersebut ditentang sekeras-kerasnya Menteri Pertahanan Soviet, Georgi Grechko sebagai membazir. Tetapi keputusan Brezhnev bersifat paku mati[4] dan tidak boleh diubah oleh sesiapa termasuk Grechko.

Bagi membolehkan Buran dapat dihasilkan, pihak agensi menghantar ramai perisik mengakses ARPANET. ARPANET ialah rangkaian komputer AS yang digunakan pelbagai agensi dan organisasi yang terlibat dalam projek Agensi Aeronautik dan Angkasa Lepas Kebangsaan (NASA) termasuk kapal angkasa Challenger.

Hasil maklumat yang diraih KGB mendedahkan program kapal angkasa Challenger sememangnya program angkasa lepas untuk keamanan dan bukan program keten-teraan seperti dibimbangi Brezhnev. Semua maklumat ini digunakan untuk menghasilkan Buran dan hasilnya, ia sebenarnya dianggap jauh lebih baik berbanding Challenger.

Ini kerana tidak seperti kapal angkasa buatan AS itu, rekaan kapal angkasa yang dihasilkan Valentin Glushko langsung tidak diganggu oleh pihak kerajaan. Sementara gangguan ahli politik dan perubahan polisi angkasa lepas AS menjejaskan keupayaan kapal angkasa itu sehingga memaksa pasukan kejuruteraan terpaksa berkompromi dengan pelbagai tekanan yang dikenakan.

Bagaimanapun, Buran hanya terbang sekali saja pada tahun 1988 menerusi penerbangan tanpa krew. Sebarang cubaan untuk melengkapkannya dengan enjin roket berkuasa tinggi pada tahun 1993 berakhir dengan kejatuhan Tirai Besi pada tahun 1991. Jika tidak, Rusia dan komuniti angkasa lepas mempunyai kapal angkasa dan enjin yang membolehkannya meneroka angkasa lepas. Buran disentuh panjang lebar dalam buku Soviet Di Hujung Jari.

Dalam per-ang proksi pula, kedua-dua pihak melaksanakan kempen terhadap satu sama lain dan ia banyak dicatatkan dalam lipatan sejarah. Di sebelah Asia, KGB menjadi duri dalam daging kepada operasi ten-tera AS semasa Per-ang Korea dan Per-ang Vietnam. Sementara di Timur Tengah, mana-mana rejim yang menentang Israel mendapat sokongan Soviet termasuk sokongan aset-aset KGB.

Tetapi satu tempat di mana CIA mencapai kejayaan cemerlang dalam per-ang proksi ialah Afghanistan. Beberapa bulan sebelum ketumbukan Soviet tiba di situ, pihak agensi sudah memintas pelbagai maklumat yang menjurus kepada ser-angan mereka di Afghanistan. Namun begitu, tidak seperti Vietnam dan Semenanjung Korea, CIA mahu memastikan pihak Soviet terkejut beruk apabila tiba di sana.

Untuk mencapai matlamat sedemikian, CIA bukan saja melatih pejuang-pejuang Muja-hidin. Malah, mereka turut membekalkan bantuan logistik seperti sen-jata api, ubat-ubatan dan maklumat bagi membolehkan mereka mengatasi pihak Soviet. Dan seperti dijangkakan, pada malam Krismas 1979, pihak Soviet mendapat kejutan yang tidak disangka-sangka.

Sebaik tiba, mereka diberi ‘sambutan’ berupa pelbagai sen-jata canggih seperti pel-uru berpandu Sti-nger. Pel-uru berpandu ini bertanggungjawab memus-nahkan 300 buah helikopter dan 100 buah pesawat. Aset-aset CIA dalam Pakistan bertanggungjawab melancarkan penghantaran bekalan logistik yang diperlukan pihak Muja-hidin dalam kempen mereka. Kegagalan kempen di Afghanistan merupakan antara punca kejatuhan Tirai Besi pada tahun 1991.

Tetapi kejayaan sebenar Soviet ialah membantu meraih kelebihan sen-jata nuk-lear. Bukan satu rahsia pada awal abad ke-20, ramai ahli fizik tidak menolak kemungkinan potensi sen-jata yang membawa kemus-nahan besar iaitu b0m atom. Justeru, banyak negara berlumba-lumba untuk menjadi negara pertama mempunyai sen-jata itu termasuk Britain, AS, Perancis, Jerman dan Soviet.

Apabila Hit-ler berkuasa pada tahun 1933 disusuli kempen keten-teraan mereka pada akhir dekad berkenaan, ramai ahli fizik terpaksa melarikan diri untuk mengelak dipaksa bekerja di bawah rejim partinya. Ramai yang memilih melarikan diri ke Britain, AS atau Kesatuan Soviet. Salah seorang daripada mereka ialah Klaus Fuchs. Tetapi disedari pihak Barat, Fuchs sebenarnya merupakan aset Soviet.

Bagi pihak Soviet, mereka perlu berada di hadapan seiring dengan kuasa-kuasa Barat lain. Walau bagaimanapun, negara itu tidak mempunyai pengetahuan saintifik untuk membangunkan sen-jata berkenaan. Jadi, seperti biasa, pihak Soviet mahu mencuri seberapa banyak maklumat daripada program nuklear AS dan Britain agar dapat dimanfaatkan oleh Soviet di kemudian hari.

Selepas melepasi pemeriksaan latar belakang pihak British, Fuchs kemudian dihantar ke AS dan menjadi sebahagian daripada Projek Manhattan[5]. Penglibatannya dianggap berharga kerana berjaya mempercepatkan tempoh masa diperlukan untuk menghasilkan b0m atom.

Bagaimanapun, Fuchs tidak keseorangan kerana Soviet menghantar ramai perisik mengakses semua maklumat program nuklear Barat termasuk Manhattan. Empat tahun selepas tamat WWII, pihak Soviet melaksanakan ujian nuklear pertama mereka sekaligus mengesahkan mempunyai sen-jata nuklear dalam kelengkapan persen-jataan mereka. Ironinya, program nuklear mereka diketuai oleh Beria atas arahan Stalin.

Kisah penyusupan perisik Soviet dalam program nuklear AS menjadi asas kepada kisah Perseus, seorang aset KGB yang dilabel mitos oleh komuniti perisikan. Bagaimanapun, itu tidak menghalang Activision dan Treyarch daripada menjadikannya sebagai antagonis utama Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold W-ar.

Jika ditanya mana yang lebih hebat, penulis berpandangan agensi perisikan terhebat masih lagi KGB. Ini kerana kehebatan KGB diakui komuniti perisikan di seluruh dunia termasuk berupaya menjadikan beberapa perisik Barat sebagai aset mereka. Siapa tidak kenal Aldrich Ames[6] (CIA) dan Robert Hanssen[7] (FBI)? Kedua-duanya bertanggungjawab membocorkan nama-nama aset Soviet CIA kepada KGB pada tahun 80-an termasuk Dmitri Polyakov[8].

Atas sebab itulah, sehingga hari ini, CIA amat berhati-hati apabila ada perisik Soviet/Rusia menawarkan diri untuk berpaling tadah. Silap haribulan, mereka pula yang mengorek maklumat dan menghantarnya semula ke Moscow. Walaupun KGB runtuh bersama Tirai Besi pada tahun 1991, pengalaman dan kemahiran mereka diteruskan oleh agensi penggantinya, Biro Keselamatan Persekutuan (FSB).
