Funeral Home (1980)

A Canadian slasher released early enough in the slasher boom to make it reasonable to assume they weren't trying to make “A slasher” and just coincidentally hit on the same formula. That isn’t to say they weren’t copying other movies, the ending is a fairly blatant take on a very popular horror film that I won’t name because it would spoil the ending, but movies stealing from other movies is literally why we even have genre conventions to discuss.

Overall it is a fairly decent movie, not much in the way of suspense, but some decent atmosphere. And because it may not have been trying as hard to tick all the boxes it does also subvert the occasional slasher trope in a way that is refreshing in retrospect. Yeah, it’s not Halloween, but also isn’t trying to be Halloween.
