Two weeks on from the end of the previous story, the puppies are now big enough to take on the world (well, visit Station 19 at least) and Maya's two weeks closer to being allowed back to work. Life is very different now there are five living there, but rather than resenting Mason and the puppies' intrusion in the apartment, or breaking out in hives, Maya was feeling energised and alive in a way she'd never imagined possible before she'd met Carina.
They were still Captain Bishop, Seattle's youngest fire captain and reluctant 'anti-corruption hero', and Dr DeLuca, Grey Sloan's OBGYN 'rockstar' Head of Department, but they were also so much more. They were surrounded by friends who were family and their little brothers, neither of whom were that little any more...and two puppies who, so far at least, hadn't discovered how tasty Italian leather was...
[There is no relationship angst - Maya/Carina are angst free but the *feels* associated with backstory of canon characters generate *feels* that if the writing's worked as with the earlier stories in the series].

Tumblr media
Y/N wasn’t very happy and he could see that perfectly. If there was one thing he understood about her was that she enjoyed organising her bag whenever she was travelling, however this time she was throwing all her clothing followed by some clothing she’d left in the house before moving to NY into her bag into wrinkled messes. He felt bad, he knew it was his fault and his lack of impulse control.
    - Y/N, I’m so sorry. - he held her hand as she was about to send another wrinkled dress into her suitcase. - I’ll go meet the boys for the remaining day, you can stay here with your family.
   - It’s not your fault, my grandfather has been wanting to tell me he hates my career ever since I left the house. - she had gotten a job offer straight of university within her family’s company which she denied. Despite most people in her family being writers or reporters, her grandfather wanted her to go into the company which she denied. After a big blown fight she left the house, managed to get settled with the money she had gotten from her job during university and started to show up during the holidays. Y/N was no stupid girl, she knew that he’d been wanting to say that and with Sebastian stepping just a bit off the line, it made sense. - It’s not like I enjoy being here anyway.
   - Hey ... - he cupped her face. - Take it from someone who hasn’t spoken to their mother in years, it’s not the worse thing.
  - I have an idea. - he grabbed his hands, a naughty smile on her face. She opened the door of her room and tip toed to a small room which he hadn’t seen yet. She opened the door which led to a very dark staircase. He wanted to ask her what she was doing but she looked determined to go down the stairs which they did. They came face to face with another door which she opened and light came in. Turned out she had just let them outside and by the beach. - Let’s go for a swim.
  - Wait ... - she took off in the sand, going down the slope and into the sea. Sebastian went after her, coming into contact with the very cold waters of the sea which didn’t seem to upset her. He swam up to her, grabbing her by the waist so she couldn’t swim any further. - You could’ve warned me it would be freezing cold.
  - It’s part of the fun. - she smiled at him, her hands cupping to cup his face, drops of water rolling down his cheeks. - You’re a good man, Sebastian.
  - I’m not. - he drew invisible circles on her waist, pushing her close to him, her chin resting on the space between his head and shoulder. - You make me want to be better.
  - I take it back.
  - What do you take back?
  - When we first met, I told you that you weren’t misunderstood. I was wrong.
  - Y/N Wiley admitting that she was wrong? - he smirked, kissing the top of her head making her heart swell. Things were simple with her, it always felt like it was just the two of them with no spotlights, no gossiping, nothing, just them. Y/N raised her head to stare at his baby blues. - What?
  - I have a question but you have to answer me honestly. - he furrowed his brows but eventually shrugged and nodded his head yes. - When I was working under a senior writer we went to the Victoria Secret’s Fashion Show and interviewed a model named Carina Bergenstock.
  - I already don’t like where this is going.
  - She sat me down and told me something that I’m rather interested in, specially if it’s true. - he swallowed in vain, waiting for her to tell him whatever she was about to say. - She said you were a phenomenal lover. I wanna test that theory.
  - You sure? We are in the ocean in front of your parents. - he looked around, not really keen of the idea of them catching him defiling his precious little innocent daughter.
  - Do you want me to beg? - her hands stood on top of the buttoned shirt he was wearing, unbuttoning the first top buttons.
  - You sure you wanna do this with me?
  - I trust you. - she kissed him, stopping to look at him. - Besides if your reputation precedes you ... it’s probably gonna be good.
  - Probably? - Sebastian raised an eyebrow at her before pushing her legs, holding her like if she weighted nothing and rushed out of the sea. He ran back to the tiny door, up the stairs and back into her room, locking the door behind them and pushing her against the wall, lips colliding against hers. She always had the softest lips which made him want to never stop kissing her.
His free hand moved to take off her drenched dress, tossing it onto the floor of her bedroom. Sebastian stopped in his motion once he saw no bra, no panties, nothing. He looked over to her and she shrugged.
  - It’s a white dress, it looks ugly when you wear underwear. - she replied before returning to kissing him. He brought her back to her bed, pushing all the pillows and childhood toys.
  - Move. - he instructed her to move upwards, as he took off his trousers, throwing them to where her dress was laying. - Fuck, you’re stunning.
  - Better than your dream version of me? - she asked as he started to kiss down from her collarbones down to her navel. She was about to make another snarky comment but got interrupted by Sebastian snaking out his tongue and circulating her bundle of nerves. She bucked her hips, her eyes widening at the waves of sensitivity that rushed through her body. - Seb, fuck.
 - You’re so sensitive, bunny. - he moved upwards, using his hand to pump two fingers in and out of her. He leaned down to kiss her, silencing her already low moans as not to alert her parents that were downstairs. He had to admit it, there was a certain excitement about doing it with her folks being in the house. She moved her hand to take his boxers out but he stopped her. - This is about you today.
 - Today huh? - she smirked as he removed his fingers from her making her whine at the lost of the sensation. He removed his boxers himself, placing himself in line with her. - Wait.
 - What, are you alright? Do you wanna stop.
 - Hold my hand. - she intertwined her fingers with his, surprising him. - Look at me, please.
 - I don’t wanna look at anything else, bunny. - he gave her a kind smile.
 - I love you.

Follower Ficmas Day 4
For @kurt-nightcrawler
Preferred Character: Warren Worthington III
Prompt: First Date (+ High School AU that I’ve added)
Tumblr media
You always hated being the new kid in school. You always felt so alone. So outcasted. But you couldn’t help it, it was out of your control. Due to your parents’ work, you were constantly moving. Whether it was months into the school year or even weeks, you never stayed at one place for long. But this time it seemed like you were staying here for a bit longer.
Your parents signed up for a big project that might take months to even a few years to finish. You were happy to take a break from all the moving, but it still left for you to be the new student in the middle of the year.
Warren immediately noticed you the first day you walked into class. You were new, clearly. He’d never seen you around before and you were definitely different from the other girls at Xavier Academy. He could already tell and he was drawn to you.
After class was over, he immediately rushed up to your side, startling. He chuckled and smiled, “Sorry. I’m Warren Worthington the third, but-” he turned around to show the angel wings embroidered into his black leather jacket, “Most people call me Angel.”
“I’m Carina and, sorry, but you look anything but angelic,” you gestured to the leather jacket, the pack of cigarettes peeking out from his pocket, “Seems like you’re the stereotypical bad boy to me.”
Warren shrugged with a smirk, “Anyone ever tell ya not to judge a book by it’s cover?”
You rolled your hazel-green eyes and swiped a strand of your brown hair out of your face, “Touche.” The warning bell rang above and you looked at the time, groaning, “And now because of you, I’m going to be late!” you pushed past him and began to speed walk to your next class.
Warren hurried beside you, “Hey, why don’t I make it up to you? How ‘bout I take you out after school?”
“Not interested.”
_______________________________
After the first time you met, Warren was ever the persistent one. Every day since then, he’d always ask you out twice or thrice daily as he walked you to your second class. Aside from that, you’ve also gotten to know him better since then.
He comes from a wealthy family, but doesn’t like people knowing because they’ll end up wanting to get close to him for the money. You couldn’t help but be surprised by this.
“Why’s that?” Warren asked when you made the comment.
You shrugged, “You look like someone who’d want to flaunt their money around.”
He chuckled and shook his head, “Sweetheart, didn’t I tell you not to judge a book by its cover?” he asked playfully as he nudged you.
You rolled your eyes, per usual, at him, “And didn’t I tell you,” you nudged him back, “to stop calling me sweetheart? I have a name.”
“But sweetheart fits you so well.”
He said flirtatiously which prompted you to blurt out the question, “Why do you always ask me out even though you know what my answer is?”
He shrugged, his cocky smirk replaced by a shy grin, “Guess I just hope you’ll someday change your mind.”
“And if I do say yes?”
This automatically made him perk up, “You won’t regret it. I swear!”
You let out a sigh, “This better be one helluva date, Worthington.”
He nodded profusely, “I promise it will be!”
______________________________________
The two of you decided to go on your date after school on Friday, so there was no rush to go home. When you followed him to his car, you were, once again, a bit surprised. You imagined him to have some sleek car, but no. His car was a faded black, beat up pick-up truck.
“You still seem to surprise me, Warren,” you mumbled to yourself as he helped you into the passenger’s seat. You noticed Warren’s fingers fidgeting against the steering wheel. Guess that made two of you who were nervous.
You made light chatter, talking about your classes, something funny that happened in gym, and your likes and dislikes. You were so distracted by the conversations that you didn’t realize that Warren had pulled up to a music shop.
Your mouth hung open in awe as Warren helped you out of the truck, “You brought me to a music store?”
He nervously rubbed the back of his neck, “Well, uh, yeah. My mate works here and I remembered you said how much you loved music so..this seemed like a good place for our date. That alright?” he asked in anticipation.
You nodded with a big smile on your face, “Definitely alright!” You both walked in, the bell chiming above the door signalling your arrival.
“‘Sup Angel!” a young black girl from behind the register yelled, waving at Warren.
He waved back, “Hey, Storm!” he gestured you to follow him and you did. “Storm, this is Carina, Carina, Storm.”
Storm held out her hand to you, “Nice to meet you. Angel, here, hasn’t stopped talking about you.”
Warren gave her a warning look, “Don’t start.” his eyes soften as they set on you, “Anyway, where do you wanna start? They have everything from vinyls, to cassettes and cds-”
“We also have a band room!” Storm exclaimed.
You immediately got excited, “Can we see the band room?” you asked hopefully.
He nodded, “Sure.” his hand went to rest on your lower back as he guided you to the back of the store and through a door that was the band room. Guitars and bases hung on the right side of the room. A keyboard and piano sat on the left and a drum set was in the middle.
Warren immediately waltzed to the drums, sitting on the stool and twirling the drumsticks around, “I used to dream about being a rockstar. Touring the world and playing big venues. Wanted to be just like Metallica or Queen. Roger Taylor is someone I’ve always looked up to.”
Walking along the wall where the guitars and basses hung, you mindlessly asked, “So can you play the drums?”
A loud and rhythmic beat startled you. Your head snapped to Warren, who was gracefully playing the drums before him. A wide smile on his face as he played. After his freestyling, you couldn’t help but applaud.
“I guess that answers my question.”
He snorted, “You think?” he set the drumsticks down and walked over to you, “So, how am I doing so far on our date?”
“You..are constantly surprising me, Warren Worthington the Third.”
“I’m guessing that’s a good thing?”
You nodded, “A very good thing.”

Bocciati.
Achille Lauro: Voto- 7 Sdraiato a terra come i Doors.
Incompreso.
Irama: Voto- 8-  Dato all’inizio come possibile contendente alla vittoria del festival insieme a Ultimo, l’euforia si è andata man mano scemando ed ha raggiunto la 6° posizione. Canzone carina ,interessante, scritta bene e ben strutturata.

14x19–– Beautiful Dreamer [episode review]
can we talk about Grey’s here for a second? I’m gonna review this episode because it’s been a really great episode. I think one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. so lets start off with saying this: I am sorry for how unorganized and choppy this is going to be, I’m apologizing in advance but my brain is going a million miles an hour. ALSO. WARNING::: SPOILERS AHEAD!!! 🚨🚨
first off–– Richard and Ollie
this was so, so sad. this gave me Amelia and Michelle, on PP, parallel feels, how Ollie is much like Amelia’s best friend Michelle and Amelia and Richard both watched their friend die a slow death. I really think and hope this is going to bring Amelia and Richard closer as friends and support systems. this storyline (Richard and Ollie) was very real, heartbreaking and sad. I really liked it even though it was rough.
Tumblr media
Arizona
two things here, first; Carina. I just. I don’t like her. it’s half “she’s never going to be callie” and half idk I just don’t like her character. she’s useless and just no. I really don’t like her. and I would really like for her to go back to Italy. like Arizona said, her study there is almost up… also, the comment at the beginning of the ep “I have no kids, thank god” like okay, I get that people don’t always like kids but coming from Arizona, someone who broke up with her girlfriend over children, this just made my heart swell. like carina you don’t say that to the person you’re with if they fucking have kids. thats like almost as close as basic human decency as we get here…and second; Arizona’s idea of the crash cart thing, that was amazing. seriously. “treat every delivery as a trauma” I can’t clap loud enough. this is amazing. I’m so glad she figured something out and she can stop stressing just a little bit. take a breather babes, you’re awesome, you’re a rockstar. [also, another note; I really am dreading JCap leaving and this is sad af, because we only have like what 3 episodes remaining?]
Tumblr media
Bello and Deluca
I actually have a lot to say about this and this is where its going to get very unorganized. I love that they’re incorporating real life like this, fucking neurosurgeons in the making, who have been living here their whole lives, facing deportation to a country they don’t know just because of our terrible choice in leaders. I can talk a while about this but I’m not going to. I thoroughly enjoyed Bailey stalling the ICE agent [we will address this later] and how literally the whole hospital was banning together to help Bello out. I genuinely like her and I’m really sad to see her leaving. I loved all the scenarios of running, getting married, Jo telling her how to fake her death with a guy in New York, I actually laughed so hard. like this was so great. this whole storyline. and then when amelia asks Owen to call Megan to help out because her “favorite intern” is going to get deported for rUNNING A FUCKING RED LIGHT. A RED LIGHT PEOPLE. we can’t even put rapists in jail, and you’re exiling an innocent fucking surgeon to a country they spent barely a year in when they were born, because she ran a red fucking light? okay moving on, coco. I loved that amelia said that, it was really cute. and like then Meredith using one of Maggie’s old papers [im assuming] and telling her Sam got accepted in Zurich and is working with Cristina. that was actually so sweet and I can’t. and then poor Andrew. I really loved them as a couple. they are really sweet and I wish we got to know more about their story, but sadly we won’t since Bello left. their goodbye was so adorable and bitter sweet. I hope she comes back one day or Deluca leaves to go be with her, he deserves happiness and an actual storyline like this because Giancomo is kinda getting screwed with Deluca’s character here.
Tumblr media
Jaggie…
as @jordan202 said last week, “jaggie is gaggie” and literally, yes. I was really excited to see Maggie ignoring him, because Jackson can be kinda dickish and like he should’ve told her April kissed him. if you want a relationship to work, be honest. and Jackson should’ve told her from the beginning. now to be honest with you, I skipped every jaggie scene, and caught the little bit at the end. I did want to point out, while I do not support Jaggie at all whatsoever, I find it very sweet Maggie showed up and made the speech and stood up for herself about not telling her because she said Jackson didn’t think he could handle it. go Maggie. and then I gagged again and skipped the scene that followed that… gross.
Tumblr media
the interns
okay I love love loveeeee seeing Jo be the chief resident [I mean not like there can be any other chief resident because lets see, mousey died, Stephanie left, ben became a firefighter and where the fuck did Leah disappear to?] anyway, I love seeing Jo be the chief res and then bringing the interns around for rounds and no one letting them into rooms for rounds, that was actually quite funny.
Matthew and Ruby
okay, so I feel bad for Arizona because this was her case, but I empathize with Matthew, and he’s hurting and this is a lot. and I’m glad Owen could be put on this case, tho really fucking weird since he worked as a trauma surgeon in the army I didn’t peg him for a peds stand in, but I know this was just a little veer in his path for his storyline [which we will talk about as well] and I’m really grateful for April here. I know that everyone kinda looked weird at her for leering around Matthew and yeah I get it its weird, but her mother’s intuition was calling, and hey, guess what, it was fucking right. I’m really glad she was able to help and the end scene with her and Matthew was really sweet. it was full circle for them and I really enjoyed that.
Tumblr media
lets go with the ICE agent next, and Bailey.
so I thoroughly enjoy that Bailey was at first just trying to stall him as long as possible. great tactic. and then her instincts kicked in and she pretty much saved this man’s life. I think that was really cool. and the scene with Maggie telling Bailey that she’d run all the tests, and then Bailey actually being serious about it. this was really nice. Bailey was being sincere to this man, she was serious because this guy, who is trying to take her intern, she could’ve easily just ignored his symptoms. but she didn’t and telling him, jfc that was great. “I swear to god this isn’t a joke” or whatever. bailey’s being serious, might I even say as serious as a heart attack… [okay, okay, I know, terrible joke I am sorry] anyway, this was really sweet that even though she deemed him as the enemy, she stilled helped save his life because its her job, just like, while he hates it, being an ICE agent is his job.
Tumblr media
um what’s next? ou, Catherine.
can I start out saying I’ve never liked her? she’s always fucking shady and untrusting. seriously. and first off, do not go blaming your fucking son for this issue with the neurosurgeon lady. this is your fault. your “oh its nothing” thing with harper Avery and this lady. well yeah, we’re gonna think its nothing if you say it like that, of course Jackson won’t think anything of it and try and fucking fix things, there’s a child’s life at stake. if you weren’t such a shady bitch and were honest with Jackson, y’all won’t be getting into this mess, whatever the fuck it may be. ugh I do not like Catherine at all. Richard deserves better.
Tumblr media
um, who else… Owen okay Owen.
so, I am still logically confused why Owen was placed on ruby Taylor’s case… like I mentioned before, he’s trauma not peds, but whatever, I guess if a hospital can have a bomb, shooting, 2 plane crashes, a fire and a billion other things happen, I guess a trauma surgeon can double as a peds one for a day. now, onto why. I’m really actually genuinely excited for Owen to take this step into singlehood and hopefully soon-to-be single fatherhood. I’ve been saying this forever, but give the man a child. he’s very similar to Alex in a way, he doesn’t act very decent with other adults, but in front of children, he’s an angel and its what he really needs. I can’t wait to see what comes of this storyline!
Tumblr media
KIMMIE!
okay, wow! this breaks my heart. part of me is like “yes! go to NYC, go sing on broadway, explore the world while you still have the chance” and the other half of me just screams “stay strong just a little longer and stay at GSM for Alex and amelia to fix you, because I know they can”. Alex and kimmie’s dynamic is so sweet and their relationship just kinda melts me [and jo, but we will talk about that next!] I really hope this isnt the end of kimmie’s story. I hope she’s not going to just leave. side note: where did Tom go? is he back in New York? did he go back and I forget? anyway, whatever.
Tumblr media
last but not least, the best, jolex.
okay, we got literally the sweetest scene I’ve ever fucking seen. I think I like this more than the proposal. actually, this and the 9x24 “I love you” scene are tied for first because ofc, that was my fave but also this one was. Jo telling Alex that she wants kids with him and wants to wedding plan and get married at joe’s bar and soon and ugh I cannot. and then her telling him she wants his last name because “I’ve never had the last name of anyone who’s loved me before” okay get out. bye. I’m dead. spoiler alert: I’ve been typing this from beyond the grave. this scene fucking melted me into a pile of goo. I cannot. bye!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus! 14x20 promo!
I AM FUCKING DEAD. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS EPISODE. ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FUCKING WAIT. this looks so goddamn fucking hilarious I literally almost started crying. first of all, Arizona being the innocent lil bean to unknowingly give everyone pot cookies, I’m in tears. then, Alex wearing the fucking whatever that was on his head and “oh yeah, it was so good” pissing myself. also, fuck, was that deluca hugging a bush?!? and Bailey professing her love to Meredith. I can’t I can’t. seriously, I have high expectations for this episode, and I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Tumblr media
end note: no gifs are mine and I’m sorry for not crediting artists, I just pulled these off google. thank you for letting me borrow your work.

Abitavo insieme a sette italiani.
Scrivere è l'unica cosa che so fare.
Quella mattina stavano passando diverse persone.
"Wow sei bravissimo! Io adoro i Rudimental!"
Spagna?"
In effetti in molti mi scambiano per spagnolo, noi e i nostri cugini iberici siamo simili.
"No, sono italiano" risposi sempre imbarazzato.
Me ne innamorai subito.
Come va?
Cazzo...cazzo...cazzo! Ero realmente emozionato come una ragazzina. Mi batteva il cuore all'impazzata...cazzo!
Mi presentai all'indirizzo.
Per mia fortuna Becky era lì vicino e urlò all'omone: "Bryan caprone! Fallo entrare è con me!"
Mi ci buttai a capofitto e gliela leccai. In pochi secondi si bagnò.
Becky diceva cose del tipo: "C'mon baby! Non fermarti! Ti prego baby!"
"Mettimelo dentro" disse mentre mi leccava l'orecchio.
Pompai, pompai, pomai e dopo 5 minuti dovevo venire.
"No baby, ora rivestiti. Domattina devo uscire presto"
Che avessi sempre sbagliato a credere all'amore eterno?
Mi rivestii, la salutai e me ne andai.

Perso Piccoli Cuccioli di Fuoco della Stazione 19 [but the stories are in English!]
aka the 'puppy' stories [Maya/Carina, Station 19 by @ncruuk]
This is your reread/refresh/read claxon warning this weekend the next story will be starting on AO3...
Handy link to AO3 for the stories
Or keep reading for more explanation about the ‘puppy-verse’ where Station 19 season 4 canon is only selectively recognised [i.e. only the fluffy bits] and season 5? Yeah, no. I like my Captains Bishop shaped and capable thank you, with Dr DeLuca treated like a superb medical rockstar!
[There is no relationship angst - Maya/Carina are angst free but the *feels* associated with backstory of canon characters generate *feels* that if the writing's worked, might feel a bit angsty. Also contains reference to past drug use and injuries (milder than show but still to note) as well as the ‘not so rainbow filled’ side of the OBGYN specialty- individual chapters have notes were relevant].
Our stories start on Christmas Eve, when it's Christmas Eve and Station 19 are slowly working their way through a double shift that might have been slow, boring and distinctly non-memorable were it not two tiny puppies found in an alley and now wrapped in a Santa hat that Jack was absolutely not supposed to have been wearing.
Puppies + Carina DeLuca + Christmas = A level of cuteness even Captain Bishop couldn't say no to.
By story 6, there's puppies, paintbrushes and little brothers thrown into the life of one rather highly strung, easily stressed out Olympic Gold Medal winning Seattle Fire Captain.
Add a Station full of firefighters, a handful of surgeons and it's almost certainly a recipe for disaster.
Or would be, apart from the one extra, essential element, one special doctor and the only person, other than her little brother, that Maya Bishop has ever said 'I love you' to.
Because then? The something between two people that was already wonderful and incredible becomes noisier and messier and a little more chaotic and yet, it is still, at its heart, just theirs. Fantastic, magical, uniquely theirs.

I’m so excited to get to participate in the blog tour for Kiersten White’s latest novel in The Conqueror’s Saga, Now I Rise. I truly think that Lada is one of the most unique and captivating characters in YA, and she more than lived up to all my expectations once again!
Wine Pairing
One of the many things I love about these books are the wonderful nods to the Dracula mythos woven throughout the story, so I paired Now I Rise with this Draculea Vlad the Impaler Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, not to mention the fact that Lada is one FIERCE, gender-swapped version of Vlad the Impaler.
*All wine recommendations are strictly for those of legal drinking age only.*

NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets. Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion. But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

Lada Dracul has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.
What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?
As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.
Now I Rise Review
AND I DARKEN was one of my favorite novels of 2016. I absolutely fell in love with the concept of a gender-swapped, anti-heroine take on Vlad the Impaler! That premise is, quite frankly, badass. And I found all the little nods to the Dracula mythos absolutely brilliant.
I was thrilled to get to read an early copy of NOW I RISE as part of the blog tour, and this book certainly did not disappoint. I am absolutely addicted to this series and fascinated by the evolution of both Lada and Radu’s characters.
This book spends a lot more time in Radu’s perspective than the previous book did, and it was so fascinating to observe his character arc throughout this novel and the struggles he is faced with in fitting in to his society, choosing sides between two warring nations despite split allegiances, and questioning his faith. I fell in love with Radu in book one and feel like he definitely stole the show in book two.
While I would have liked just a bit more of Lada’s perspective in this story, when we were in her POV, it was so fascinating watching her further develop into that iconic character of the Impaler. I love the fact that even though Kiersten White does show some of Lada’s more humanizing characteristics and weaknesses, she still absolutely reads like an anti-heroine. I feel like that is something that truly sets her character and this story apart.
The first book covered a very large expanse of time and seemed to stay in the MG age for a large portion of the story. This second book is more focused on a shorter period of time and really zeroes in on these characters during a YA age. Honestly, I enjoyed both equally. I feel like the pacing in the first was a bit faster, because of how much material it covered, while in NOW I RISE the pacing is a bit slower, but you really get a lot more detail about the characters, setting, and political machinations.
The amount of research that White puts into these books absolutely shines through the text. The historical events that White does feature in the story are immersive and feel like they could be very accurate representations of how things may have transpired.
There were also some really powerful scenes with Mehmed in this book. I won’t go into detail, so I can avoid spoilers, but his character is becoming more and more fascinating to me as the series progresses as well.
I cannot wait for the next book to come out already. I am so excited to see more of Lada’s character and where White takes this story from here.

lA pirate’s life must have consequences. They make a living terrorizing the high seas, and when they’re on land they’re raising hell, drinking, stealing, and carousing with people of questionable repute, especially if the pirates are of the fictional variety.
Pirates of the Caribbean has taken an unlikely step for a Disney franchise by systematically dismantling Captain Jack Sparrow’s life. He’s lost his ship (well, okay, not lost, but it’s not exactly accessible), he’s wanted but not necessarily very much (the bounty on his head keeps dropping), he’s broke, he’s a drunk, and his crew is losing faith. This, of course, signals the point at which he needs another problem to surface and send him on another quest.
Brenton Thwaites plays Henry Turner, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. He wants nothing more than to see his father free of the Flying Dutchman and has dedicated his life to studying the lore of the sea in order to meet his goal. Kaya Scodelario is Carina Smyth, a young woman of science and daring, who wants to solve the mystery of who her father is. She’s dedicated herself to scientific pursuits as the means to that end.
The pair cross paths and end up joining forces, taking Jack Sparrow along for the ride, because who else would you team up with but a legendary pirate captain who’s probably more than a little responsible for your dad’s imprisonment on a cursed ship. But, of course, it’s Jack Sparrow, so any attempt at a plan goes horribly awry.
The hitch in the tie of this tidy plot comes in the form of Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who is cursed (guess who ended up causing that curse, as well?) and vows revenge on Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp staggers his way through slapstick comedy elements, giving us the Captain Sparrow we’ve all come to recognize. He takes no responsibility for his actions, but he’s confident in his abilities as a pirate. The familiarity of the character because of previous installments makes us believe it too. After five movies, he’s getting to be a one-note wonder, but that’s okay, he’s there for comedic relief and some plot momentum, because the real heroes of the story are Henry and Carina.
Javier Bardem is menacing and still somehow dignified, even missing half of his face. He’s a good archenemy, even if he’s a recently revealed one. The backstory of how he and his crew ended up in their situation also gives us some insight into the origins of Jack Sparrow, as well.
Kaya Scodelarino’s Carina is smart and sassy, and she comes off tough as hell. She’s fought her entire life to get where she is, and she’s comfortable in her skin. I love the fact she’s a scientist and she doesn’t put up with crap from anyone. If a woman’s going to put up with Sparrow and his crew, well, they need someone with definite backbone standing up to them. She has it.
I’ve got a new fantasy coat goal. The black and white striped sea captain’s coat Bardem’s Salazar wears is fantastic, and I desperately, definitely want one. It’s badass and rockstar and fully cements the idea in my head that the villains in movies ALWAYS get the coolest coats.
As for the movie itself? It’s a fun comedic action romp full of pirates, magic, and a hefty dose of fairy tale spirit to it. I enjoyed watching it immensely for the mix of familiar characters and resolutions to the story I wanted to know. It’s a good wrap-up of the Pirates franchise.
