Text
As Gov. Greg Abbott tells state agencies that using diversity, equity and inclusion criteria in the hiring process is “illegal,” lawmakers in the legislature are pushing against the practice in Texas universities. State representative Carl Tepper, R-Lubbock, filed a bill to prohibit higher education institutions from funding or supporting diversity, equity and inclusion offices. HB 1006 also prohibits any efforts to formulate diversity “beyond what is necessary to uphold the equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment.” “We call it division, inequity and indoctrination. The DEI office name is a misnomer,” Tepper said. “We feel like it’s purposely being misused, to push a very woke very liberal agenda. You can have any belief you want, you can have any care about race relations or sexual relations or what have you. But we think that on the state dollar, and the state budget, that these universities, these state departments, departments of the state of Texas, should be neutral.”
Tepper’s alma mater Texas Tech University, now in his district, said its Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion works “to foster, affirm, celebrate, engage and strengthen inclusive communities.” They provide mentors to first-generation students, cultural centers for minority students and outlets for the campus to engage with the intercultural community.
Tepper said he hopes his bill will get rid of those outlets. He called Texas Tech’s Black Cultural Center “self-segregation.”
“I would do away with that. We have some wonderful facilities for everyone,” he said. “We want our students to learn together and play together, interact together, not as a segregated society. We want to see distinguished Black alumni, the portraits of distinguished Black alumni all over campus, not just in the Black Cultural Center.”
Some attorneys worry the recent restrictions of DEI policies are misguided. Jay Ellwanger, an attorney who specializes in employment and civil rights litigation at Ellwanger Law, said DEI policies are already prohibited from discrimination by federal law and may attract businesses wanting to create a diverse and competitive workforce. “The thing that struck me most in Governor Abbott’s memorandum to the state agencies was that I think he needed to go back to law school,” Ellwanger said. “Because the issues that were raised by this memorandum are impacted by areas of federal law that have been in place for almost 60 years.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recommends DEI initiatives as a best practice.
“EEOC makes it make extremely clear that you can’t have quotas, that you can’t purposely put a minority ahead of a nonminority in a DEI context if they’re not qualified,” Ellwanger said. “All the federal law says is that you can allow for other parts of someone’s makeup to go into that hiring equation, which again, allows for a company or state agency to hire more competitively, to get more viewpoints in the workplace, and just overall become more competitive.”
Rep. Tepper’s concerns are already shifting policy, however. Texas Tech University announced Wednesday they are eliminating DEI criteria. That decision comes after a Wall Street Journal report criticized the weight that some departments give to subjective diversity statements required in candidates’ applications.

I swear to god I decide I hate a certain name, like a name that sounds like it belongs to an old dude. And then I’ll turn around and start a show and suddenly that name doesn’t sound so bad because it’s my favorite character’s name.

Will the Rocky IV Director’s Cut Kill its Charm?
https://ift.tt/3dJG7Jv
Rocky IV remains a prototypical example of 1980s American franchise filmmaking, having conveyed a patriotic Cold-War-evocative ethos through the aesthetically shiny lens of scrappy superhuman pugilists pummeling each other over revenge and world peace, all to Vince DiCola’s absurd synthesizer-strewn score. Oh, and lest we forget, it had a robot!  While those attributes entitled the 1985 film to the smug dismissal and earnest appreciation of posterity, star/writer/director Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming director’s cut risks erasing its allure.
Stallone, who announced his plan for a new Rocky IV cut last year, has completed his redux of the famous franchise‘s four-quel. However, unlike that other director’s cut dominating current conversations, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Sly’s upcoming Rocky IV Director’s Cut is an update of a film that was properly released by its director. Having premiered back on Nov. 27, 1985, Rocky IV was a box-office-topping hit that proved profoundly profitable for studio MGM, with a worldwide gross of $300 million ($733.3 million adjusted for inflation,) against a budget of $28 million. Moreover, despite its oft-focused foibles, the film retained enough interest 33 years later to be directly followed up in Creed II. However, to borrow his parlance from 2006’s Rocky Balboa, Stallone seemed to have “stuff in the basement,” to unleash for the fourth film.
“We’ve just been working on punches and sounds because it’s never complete,” explains Stallone of his director’s cut approach in an Instagram update. “I’ve said this before, you can go back and see a movie that you’ve done 50 years ago and go, ‘I’ve got to re-edit that.’ And every director feels the same way. It’s not about making a movie, it’s about remaking. Unfortunately, you run out of time, you run out of money. They basically throw you out of the room. So, therefore, you don’t get a chance, but on this one, I finally got a chance, so I’m feeling great about this.”
While the full extent of the changes Stallone made to Rocky IV obviously won’t be known until he premieres his new cut, some tidbits have made the rounds. One of the earliest-known changes is the elimination of one of its most campy, pseudo-sci-fi elements, the aforementioned robot. Specifically, the Jetsons-esque talking robot—a real-life invention called SICO, created by International Robotics Inc.—that well-to-do champ Rocky gives as a birthday present to his leachy live-in brother-in-law, Paulie (Burt Young) in the film’s first act. However, the robot—complete with a fancy-for-1985 cordless phone system installed—became a punchline, even for within film, during which it was implied that Paulie eventually altered its settings to sound and act like an alluring female maid that worships him while fetching his beers. Thus, the elimination of the robot not only deletes the amusing automaton, but it also necessitates an essence-altering recut of Paulie’s birthday party scenes. Yet, Stallone’s response to a fan’s posted desire to give SICO a reprieve was met with Ivan Drago-like coldness, stating, “I don’t like the robot anymore.”
MGM/UA
And that brings us to the film’s Siberian Bull big bad himself, Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, whose claim-to-fame fight in which he beat Carl Weathers’s Apollo Creed to death will apparently be extended in a yet-unknown manner in Stallone’s new cut. The role positioned newcomer Lundgren for stardom in what was only his second onscreen appearance, having previously appeared six months earlier in 1985 Bond movie A View to a Kill as a thug named Venz; a role he acquired due to his real-life romantic relationship with co-star Grace Jones. Besides being an imposing spectacle of a human being (which he remains to this day), Lundgren’s outing as Drago was meant to depict him as the ultimate villain, a soulless Soviet slayer shaped by communism, steroids and all-around godlessness. However, while that façade was shattered by the end of the film (and even more so in Creed II), it remains to be seen if extended Drago scenes—specifically in the Apollo fight—ends up weighing the film down unnecessarily.

Could Rocky Balboa Really Have Gone the Distance?

If there’s one thing that critics can’t take away from Rocky IV, it would have to be Stallone’s artfully economic approach as a director. The film manifests as a slim, trim 91-minute affair that saves money by being deliberately diluted with lengthy montages—FOUR of them in total. In fact, even if we generously discount his blatant reuse of Rocky and Apollo’s Rocky III-closing sparring session for the opening scene, two of said montages fully consist of recycled footage from the previous three films. Indeed, the movie kicks off by playing “Eye of the Tiger” during the franchise-obligatory recap of the previous film’s final fight, and Rocky’s contemplative car ride after Apollo’s death is riddled with flashback scenes, during which a soundtrack song, Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out,” plays out in full! You certainly have to hand it to Sly, the man knows how to get a big bang for his production buck. Yet, as with other intrinsically-Rocky IV aspects, one must wonder if Stallone has soured on his in-retrospect-amiable montage method of movie-making as much as the Robot.
On another note, Rocky IV is also known to be riddled with major movie mistakes, and I do mean A LOT of them; proverbial warts that have also come to define the film. For example, a major continuity mistake occurs before the Apollo/Drago fight when Apollo is in the ring trash-talking Drago, shouting, “I want you! I want you!” while his bare hand mockingly points at the Russian. Of course, just minutes earlier, we saw Apollo getting his hands taped up in his dressing room, and he was clearly gloved up when he came down to the ring in a James Brown-accompanied spectacle entrance. Additionally, a similarly bizarre mistake occurs during Rocky’s mid-movie vision of Drago in the aforementioned “No Easy Way Out” montage, which shows the Russian in the red trunks that he would later wear in the film’s final fight. Yet, most egregiously, Drago is clearly sporting the actual cut under his left eye that Rocky would deliver to him in the second round! While I could see Stallone wanting to fix mistakes like this, it would still be a shame to lose them.
However, a director’s cut of Rocky IV could yield benefits. After all, it could correct Apollo’s funeral scene, in which an odd focus error occurs on the right side of the frame that blurs out a few attendees, leading viewers to think it was censored. Moreover, it could prospectively integrate legendary lost elements. For example, Drago’s iconic evil line—delivered after he just killed Apollo—declaring “If he dies, he dies” was originally complemented by another would-be famous line that wasn’t even delivered in the film, but could finally get its onscreen due. Rocky IV’s teaser trailer featured an ominous introductory monologue from the villain that, contemporaneously, was just associated with the character as the movie line. Delivered in Lundrgen’s labored Russian accent, lines such as “My name is Drago” and “Soon, the whole world will know my name” were prominent pieces of the film’s early ephemera. In fact, the latter line was famously sampled at the end of New Wave act Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s 1986 hit (famously used in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off), “Love Missle F1-11,” in which the trailer clip—along with imitated lines from Scarface and The Terminator—was included to exemplify the song’s commentary on American cinematic ultraviolence.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Regardless of how it turns out, fans of the campy four-quel will be anxious to see what surprises Stallone has in store for the Rocky IV Director’s Cut. However, he has yet to reveal release date.

some fun things from the bmc panel
bailey ford, jennifer ashley tepper, and gerard canonico were there, as well as some fans whose full names i dont recall off the top of my head (i do remember that one was a great fanartist named nicole who gave out exclusive prints and another was in great beetlejuice cosplay)
somebody asked about ideas for character futures which gave us some rlly sweet concepts:
bailey’s favorite was brooke so she talked about how she can see brooke going to a nice college and eventually falling in love and having a lot of kids which was sweet
jen sees christine as becoming a theater teacher and dating a lot of musicians
gerard said rich probably has to miss out on school for a while due to his injuries from the fire, and might not get to college and such, but down the line sees him reconnecting with brooke, apparently he really likes that ship
(in response somebody shouted WHAT ABOUT MICHAEL and i was scared of an impending ship war but gerard calmly explained that he’d thought about it and he doesn’t see michael/rich as really working in the long run, which is valid, though he clarified george is a great friend lol)
other proposed headcanons under this topic: michael goes to community college before he goes away, and becomes a passionate music mixer / dj. they also discussed jake living in foster care for a bit after his house burned.
they talked about some stage mishaps, such as britton using the wrong prop and spilling mountain dew red on the stage, and that time gerard!jeremy sweat out his mic and joel!scary stockboy surprised him by spraying air into his face to clear it up.
the bmc team apparently has seen that wiki page with all the weird ship names in the fandom and they love how many options are listed out. they were like “chloe and madeline??? sure why not!”
they discussed whether the squip was truly a villain or not and basically settled upon that it is more about adapting and widening its goals and operating system and such than typically purely malicious “take over the world” stuff. but still definitely antagonistic.
somebody asked about the bmc dating sim and they havent heard of it and it surprised them that it existed lol
they debated the two river cast album vs the bway one but they like both in different ways. though gerard prefers the original “halloween” bc of the bass line.
gerard talked about how hard it was to sing “loser geek whatever” because of how it’s catered towards wrol’s specifically high voice
idk how common knowledge this is but gerard’s mall character is named troy (named long before troy iwata got involved) and originally george’s character carl would offer to buy him things, eventually they tried all sorts of different routines every night (such as speaking in made up languages). one time george hurt his ankle and talked about it to gerard during the mall scene and gerard thought it was in character and acted back like “oh are you hurt sweetie?” but felt mortified when he realized george was being serious dshgjfhgf
again idk if this is common knowledge or not but gerard’s squip is robert downey jr and somebody got him a giant cutout of RDJ that stayed in his dressing room for the entire run.
they almost put the beanie babies subplot from the book into the show and i am dying to know how that would have worked out
on an additional note when i went to gerard’s autograph session i showed him the hello kitty shoes with my jeremy cosplay and he loved them, and talked about how will roland pushed so hard for those shoes even though they were so hard to find.

America’s Three Richest People Are Now Positioned To Pay Zero State Income Tax
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/americas-three-richest-people-are-now-positioned-to-pay-zero-state-income-tax-2/
America’s Three Richest People Are Now Positioned To Pay Zero State Income Tax
Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates all live in states that don’t collect income tax.
Tesl TSLA a CEO Elon Musk has moved his primary residence from California to Texas, according to reports on Tuesday, which means the three richest people in American—Musk, Amazon AMZN CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft MSFT cofounder Bill Gates—now all reside in states that don’t collect income tax.
Musk’s move was anticipated, following reported rumors from his friends and associates that the Lone Star State would become his next home. This summer, he relocated his private foundation to the city of Austin. Musk, who is worth just shy of $140  billion, previously clashed with California officials over the state’s coronavirus restrictions, going so far as to sue Alameda County in May and threaten to move his company out of the state after its factory wasn’t allowed to reopen.
Bezos (worth an estimated $183.3 billion) and Gates (worth an estimated $118.7 billion) both reside in Washington State, the birthplace of their companies. Washington and Texas are two of nine U.S. states that don’t collect income tax. The rest are: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wyoming. The Tax Foundation, a leading nonprofit, notes that Tennessee and New Hampshire still tax interest and dividends, but the latter is scheduled to phase out this tax in 2025.
Musk is far from the only billionaire to decamp for income tax havens, however. Donald Trump switched his official residence to Florida in October 2019, after decades of living in his namesake Manhattan tower. Wall Street titans Carl Icahn and Paul Singer moved their hedge funds to the Sunshine State in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Using public records, Forbes confirmed Icahn resides on the private Indian Creek Island near Miami—where Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump reportedly recently bought a $30 million plot of land—therefore making him exempt from state income tax. Tom Golisano, the billionaire founder of Paychex PAYX , says he saves “$13,800 a day” in taxes just because he relocated from New York to Florida in 2009.
These moves can dent state coffers, given the immense income some billionaires generate. When hedge fund manager David Tepper moved from New Jersey to Florida in 2016, the decision looks to have cost the Garden State hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and upended its income tax forecasts, raising concerns for state officials. American hedge fund billionaire John Arnold pointed out another concern in a Wednesday morning tweet, noting that California’s 13.3% capital gains tax, the country’s highest, effectively falls to zero the moment high earners like Musk simply decide to leave the state for lower-tax locales.
“It’s quite possible [California] is on the wrong side of the Laffer Curve,” Arnold wrote on Twitter, referencing the economic theory that supposes tax revenues will fall if governments set rates too high and can increase if rates are lowered. Arnold lives in Texas, where he pays—you guessed it—no state income tax.

Meet The Richest Person In Every State 2018
Tumblr media
Lauren Gensler ,
FORBES STAFF
I write about the world's most successful entrepreneurs.
Tumblr media
(Design by Nick DeSantis, FORBES staff)
For the fourth year in a row, Forbes has scoured the country from sea to shining sea to find the richest person in every single state. The centimillionaires and billionaires we found have made (or inherited) fortunes in a sprawling range of industries -- from hotels to hedge funds to coal.
In all, Forbes located 53 captains of industry (three states had ties) with fortunes that add up to $832 billion, up from $747 billion last year and $682 billion the year before. The average fortune for this year's list stands at $16.6 billion, up from $14.4 billion in 2017.
The most popular way to make a fortune that is unrivaled by anyone else in your state is to go into finance and investing, where a full 10 people on our list have made a name for themselves. Fashion and retail comes next, and with eight people on our list, followed by the food and beverage sector (five people) and the service industry (with another five people).

The surging price of Amazon stock has made Jeff Bezos the richest person in his adopted home state of Washington for the first time (as well as the wealthiest person in the world); his fortune skyrocketed from $83 billion last year to a current $132 billion. Amazon's stock roared 66% higher in the 12 months through mid-May as investors cheered the company's reshaping of the retail world, plus its ability to grab market share in places like the cloud, and post a stretch of profits, to boot. Bezos now easily outranks Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, who qualified as Washington's richest last year with 88.9 b$

Digital trading pioneer Thomas Peterffy also had a blockbuster year and solidified his position as the richest person in Florida. His fortune basically doubled to $25.7 billion thanks to a dizzying 104% rise in shares of his company, Interactive Brokers. That makes him the largest gainer, in terms of sheer dollars as well as percentage growth, compared to last year's list. He is now leaps and bounds ahead of fellow Florida resident and hedge fund manager David Tepper, who is the state's second-richest with a fortune of $11 billion.
California's wealthiest resident, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, managed to increase his fortune by $11.6 billion in the past year to a recent $74 billion. This is despite an outcry over the way his social media empire handles user data and its alleged role in spreading misinformation during the last presidential election. Zuckerberg remains the third-richest person in the nation.
Investors were not so kind to Charles Ergen, who lost his place as the richest person in Colorado as shares of Dish Network were beaten down by almost 50% in the 12 months through mid-May. His net worth was knocked down to $10 billion, a far cry from the $18.8 billion he clocked last year. Taking his place as the state's richest is Philip Anschutz, with a net worth of $12.7 billion, which stems from a bevy of endeavors including oil, railroads, real estate and entertainment.
In some states, there is little competition when it comes to wearing the crown of the state's richest person. Take Warren Buffett in Nebraska. The legendary investor is the fourth-wealthiest person on the entire planet with a net worth of $85 billion. The next-richest person in his beloved home state is his longtime friend Walter Scott Jr., whose fortune also comes from Berkshire Hathaway (namely, its utilities subsidiary), but is decidedly smaller at $4.2 billion.
Six of the 50 U.S. states lack a billionaire altogether. For more on the richest person in those states, see here.
Here is the full list:
Alabama: Jimmy Rane, lumber, $950 million
Alaska: Leonard Hyde, Jonathan Rubini & families, real estate, $310 million each

Florida: Thomas Peterffy, discount brokerage, $25.7 billion

Entering the country without authorization has always been a violation of civil immigration law, but thanks to a former segregationist Senator, it’s also a criminal violation. This additional criminal provision is totally unnecessary for border security, and for a century, it was rarely enforced. But since the early 2000s, it has been used to build and sustain a massive immigration detention complex. In 2016, over half of all federal criminal prosecutions were for immigration violations — more than prosecutions for terrorism, organized crime, hate crimes, or financial fraud. This obsessive focus ties up federal prosecutors and overwhelms federal courts. It’s costly and unnecessary. And under Trump, it has become increasingly abusive. We should repeal this criminal prohibition to prevent future abuse. As president, I will immediately issue guidance to end criminal prosecutions for simple administrative immigration violations; end Operation Streamline, which subjects migrants to mass prosecutions; and refocus our limited resources on actual criminals and real threats to the United States.
O’Brien later recused himself from Saavedra’s case. “There was overwhelming, voluminous evidence that this young man suffers from a disability. O’Brien, a former ICE attorney who took the bench in August 2017, is not authorized to give interviews, said Kathryn Mattingly, a spokeswoman for the Executive Office of Immigration Review, an office in the Justice Department that oversees U.S. “EOIR remains committed to ensuring that all who come before its courts will receive due process and a timely and fair adjudication,” Mattingly said in an email. The Franco-Gonzalez class settlement is named after Jose Antonio Franco-Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant with a cognitive disability who was detained in federal immigration facilities for nearly five years without a court hearing or an attorney. He sued the federal government in 2010. A settlement followed a few years later. The court order covers only jurisdictions that fall under the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, based in San Francisco.
Table A3 shows the results of these calculations for each age group and poverty level, and then sums the total at the bottom. 22.6 billion annually, assuming all those eligible actually enrolled. No Medicaid costs are assumed yet. medrano immigration law . The above estimate is the cost of providing ACA credits to all 4.9 million uninsured illegal immigrants with incomes below 400 percent of poverty. However, as is the case with all government programs, some of the people eligible will not enroll. Calculating the Cost of Medicaid. The ACA was designed so that all of those with incomes under 138 percent of poverty would be enrolled in an expanded Medicaid program, but some states have chosen not to expand Medicaid. In the analysis that follows, we assume that adult uninsured illegal immigrants with incomes under 138 percent of poverty would receive Medicaid, while those with incomes above this threshold would receive ACA subsidies.

Explorers in Arizona practice footprint tracking suited to work in the desert. Many troops also receive training in firearm use, at times in outings sponsored by the National Rifle Association. immigration laws for DACA and deportation trainings are standardized for posts across the country. Each post pays for its own equipment, trips, and uniforms through fundraising. The troop in Houlton harvests vegetables for local food pantries and solicits donations in return. The first in-depth conversation I had with an Explorer took place two months after I started researching the group. He is Alexis Fabian, and he was a senior in high school. I had contacted him via Facebook after finding his name on the Border Patrol Explorers page for Yuma, Arizona. His profile pictures show a slight, proud-looking boy in an Explorers uniform, climbing rocks as part of an exercise. Fabian, now 18, joined the Explorers at age 14. He had encountered recruiters at a local fair in Yuma, and later, his father’s friend encouraged him to join. In Yuma, Fabian said, advisers would take them to the levy where the Colorado River crosses the border, pointing out how men fishing there might be scouts helping to ferry migrants from Mexico.

America’s Three Richest People Are Now Positioned To Pay Zero State Income Tax
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/americas-three-richest-people-are-now-positioned-to-pay-zero-state-income-tax/
