Playtester AU is finally back after I had to spend forever focusing on essays for school!! Yay!!
First | Previous | Next (coming soon!)
This chapter took so long, but chapter 6 will probably take longer and I'm not prepared wjdheksj. Big thanks to the Inscryption discord server for beta reading a chunk of this fic to help me find the problems lmao, hope it's improved guys!
Also! Luke's Siblings are mentioned in this chapter, for reference his family is based vaugly off my own! But I figure it's good to have them down so you know who I'm talking about :]
In order from oldest to youngest!
Luke - 21
Carter - 19
Jacob - 17
Alyssa - 15
Jack + Abagail (twins) - 12
I do want to give credit to @shiocreator for letting me use the name Carter! It was her idea, and I just loved it so much I had to include it. Also, if you haven't read their Carder Siblings AU, what are you even doing?
While we're here, I'm also going to tell you to read @lemonzone 's Cabinet Man AU, I literally love it so much! Stolen my entire brain smh.
I am so happy I've got to meet both of these people and read their writing, as well as everyone else on the server! Y'all are so amazing and kind and this story wouldn't be what it is without you.
Anyways, that's all I've gotta say, hope you enjoy this chapter!
"Luuuke!"
It was Christmas morning.
That was the first thing that came back to Luke, maybe out of habit, since that’s all he focused on when he was younger. Truthfully, he was still just a kid on the inside. Or, perhaps, it was because he was hoping for something great this year.
Or, maybe, he was just trying to remember why the crowd of his younger siblings were here to wake him up at only 7:00 in the morning.
"Wake up!" Carter repeatedly chanted, holding a rolled piece of paper to his mouth like a megaphone.
Jack and Abagail had no hesitation jumping on Luke’s bed, making him sit up rapidly with a laugh.
Jacob and Alyssa stood aside Carter, chuckling to themselves as the twins stole a hug from Luke.
"I'm up, I'm up!" Luke managed with a giggle, ruffling his younger sister's hair. "Jeeze, real early this year, huh? Have you guys woken up mom and dad yet?"
Jacob shook his head. "We were waiting for you, sleepyhead!" He teased.
Luke sighed dramatically, falling back onto his bed. "oh no! Guess we can't get up, I'm going back to sleep!" He closed his eyes, much to the dismay of the twins.
"Come on, Luke!" Jack huffed. "It's Christmas!!"
Luke peeked one eye open, before laughing.
"Alright, but next year I get to sleep in! I'm an old man, I need my beauty rest." He said, swinging his legs out of bed before picking Jack up and putting him on his shoulders.
"You're only 20," Alyssa commented with a chuckle, looking up from her phone with a grin.
"I know, and I'm already an old man, guess what you'll be going through in 6 years!" Luke replied, ruffling his younger sister’s hair.
Carter rolled his eyes, as he began to lead the group into the hallway.
Luke's mind drifted to Christmas itself as they walked to wake up their parents - he probably had a lot of card packs underneath the tree. His channel had just exploded last month, and well, for card pack opening channels, there was a constant need to have more card packs.
Still, there was one thing he was really hoping was waiting down there for him - the new Tengu party game. Being an online game, it was the perfect way for Luke to keep playing games with his siblings while he was away at college.
Welp, guess he'd just have to find out for himself, watching Abagail tear through their parent’s door.
"Wake up, it's Christmas!"
It was summer again.
Luke's family always went on a summer vacation, usually something small in idea, but their mom had a tendency to splurge for her kids.
This year, they were out at a lake in a rental house. It was large enough for the family of 8, they had enough space and then more.
Past midnight, most of the family was asleep, but Luke and Carter had snuck out to go sit by the lake.
"It really is beautiful," Carter commented, gazing out across the ripping water. The lake wasn't huge, but far large enough for the kids to enjoy.
Luke nodded. "It is.. I'm glad I got to come. When I was younger, I figured mom would stop inviting me to these things when I turned 18."
Carter chuckled. "Like mom would ever do that! We love you, and she already misses you enough since you left for college."
"Same can be said for you!" Luke grinned. "I've heard Alyssa talking about it, she said mom missed you more than me."
"Now that's just a lie." Carter giggled, shoving at his older brother, not enough for him to end up in the lake though. Luke couldn't help but laugh, staring back out at the rippling water in silence.
There was a good 5 or so minutes of quiet before Carter spoke up again.
"Hey Luke?"
"Hm?" Luke ruffled his brother’s hair.
"How do you do it? Living alone in a new town, especially so close to the woods like that. Aren't you scared?"
"Not really." Luke shrugged. "I've got a big gate outside the house, and the only thing in those woods is crickets and deer. Most people wouldn't bother coming up the driveway, past the gate, and to my door to bother me. Plus, I've been thinking about getting a dog."
Carter chuckled. "Oh my god, we would visit so much more often if you had a dog. Please get one."
"This time I get to name it! Thank god" Luke grinned. They had a family dog named Crackers, named by the twins when they were little.
"Well, obviously you would get to name it, it would be your dog." Carter rolled his eyes. "But Crackers is a good name if you’re not dramatic."
The brothers took a moment to laugh, before Carter paused, frowning in thought.
"Actually, I brought that up because.. I've been thinking of switching degrees. Maybe even schools."
Luke blinked. "Wait, really?" Carter had been interested in biology his entire life, ranting and raging about all the discoveries he could make in the field. He'd never gotten a chance to explore it much before college, but from his determination, Luke would never have guessed that Carter wouldn’t love it.
"Yeah, actually. Bio just doesn't stick out like it used to, and there's so much I've found that I'm just.. squeamish about."
"Well, what degree are you thinking of?"
Carter paused, before shyly suggesting, ".. game development?"
Luke's eyes lit up, realizing quickly what his brother was implying. "Wait, are you saying you'd be coming to my school?" He felt himself grinning.
"I-If you're okay with it!" Carter said quickly.
Luke hugged his brother. "Of course I'm okay with it, You can even come live with me! A lot cheaper than the dorms."
Carter grinned. "Yeah, I'd like that!"
Luke sighed, looking out on the waves.
"Guess we've got a lot to plan for."
Carter nodded.
"Yeah, we do."
Luke woke with a start, sitting up quickly, only to find himself buried under some rather scratchy blankets. A soft surprised noise came from his right, and glancing over, he noticed Lone watching over him.
Oh right, Luke was in the final game he ever played, the cursed thing. Oh yeah, he was dead too! He put a hand to his head, squeezing his eyes shut.
He'd never see his family again, he'd never get to finish college, he'd just drop off the face of the earth. God.. how could this have happened? He should have never dug up this cursed game, much less played it. It should have stayed in the dirt.
The feeling of someone touching his hair startled Luke out of his thoughts. Lone flinched back, with a startled "sorry!"
The wizard was quite small, eyeing Luke fearfully yet curiously. Poor thing probably just wanted some stimulation, he must not have been out of his horrible situation for long.
Luke sighed, reaching over to pat the wizard on his head, which he seemed to enjoy immensely. After maybe a minute, Luke chuckled, pulling his hand back.
"Why did ya stick around here, bud?" Luke asked, pushing the uncomfortable blankets off him, only to notice he was laying on more. Did Magnificus have anything good for other people in this god-forsaken tower?
"P03 and the other scrybes asked me to watch over you!" He chirped, bouncing in place.
Luke nodded. "I see.. I assume they're probably fighting over something else now."
Lone gave an overdramatic shrug, with a half yelled “I’unno!” He fidgeted with his hands a lot, which made Luke wonder if Lone would prefer something to hold and mess with. Did they have Rubick cubes here? That seemed like something the small wizard would enjoy, not even to solve, but to mess with. He’d have to find out, give Lone something to do.
"I'm.. going to go find them. I need an explanation." Luke muttered softly, as if assuring himself.
"I'LL COME WITH!" Lone practically yelled, jumping up and down. It was an excitability that honesty reminded Luke of the twins. He smiled softly and genuinely, before offering Lone his hand.
"Alright, bud, we'll go and find them together!"
Lone continued to bounce excitedly, taking Luke's hand as the two began looking around for the scrybes, though Luke could guess where they were by the sounds of argument coming from above.
Up the stairs, to the top of the tower.
They were fighting.
Luke didn't know what else he was expecting.
Magnificus and P03 were shouting at each other from opposite sides of the circular room, looking about ready to brawl. Leshy and Grimora stood near the back, avoiding Magnificus' canvases, and apparently the two other scrybes. No one had noticed Luke in the doorway yet.
“I do not think jumping to conclusions is the best source of action here,” Mangnificus muttered, his voice steady yet with an accusatory tone.
“Jumping to conclusions?!” P03 countered. “I think it’s pretty damn obvious. Unless you have found a way for us to move forward without a challenger.”
“Hmm, perhaps not, but I still believe it is not unimaginable that there is something we can do. Something that doesn’t have irreparable side effects, such as your last idea.” The scrybe of magicks seemed to glare across the room.
"And what plan do you have?" P03 asked Magnificus accusatorially with almost a growl, as much as a robot could conceivably growl. “I have already attempted to connect with the servers of wherever we are, and it’s all locked down. If you all hadn’t stopped the Great Transcendence, we could all be out of this mess already!”
“Your ‘Great Transcendence’ was nothing more than a power show.” The bush wizard bit back. “Its failure was inevitable, you effete contraption.”
“Wow, insults again? That really helps your case, you blundering wizard. If y-”
Luke's babysitter instincts kicked in before he really had a chance to think about it, stepping in the room to get in between the two.
"Alright, enough." He said firmly.
This was treated with a great deal of surprise from everyone around the room, the scrybes taking a step back. Had Luke really just done that? Well, no way back now.
"You fighting clearly didn't get you guys anywhere before, and it won't now. If you want anything productive to happen, you all need to work together. No more power grabs, or arguments, or sly planning behind the scenes." He took a deep breath, noticing Grimora nodding with a sly smile. "But, after all that, I need a fucking explanation. *Especially* from you." He pointed to Grimora, whose smile dropped.
Luke was shaking. This was a lot to process, and he was shaking. Did he just treat the scrybes like his little siblings?
P03 and Magnificus glared at each other, neither wanting to relent. However, Grimora stepped in before either could open their mouths to bitch back at their surprise babysitter.
"I agree with Luke.” She said, her voice calming and steady. “Now, will the both of you please come over here? Enough with this pointless argument."
That got a grumbled "fine" from the scrybes, muttering under their breath what Luke could only imagine were curses much older than he was. The scrybes mostly kept their distance from one another, but now stood in a manageable circle.
Luke sighed.. thank god that worked. He went to stand alongside the edge of the circle, by the door. Admittedly, he didn’t quite like being in the spotlight, at least in real life.
As he went to stand near the doorway he had entered through, Luke noticed a mischievous Lone had started climbing onto everything around him and had begun poking at the candles lighting up the tower. Luke would have to make sure he grabbed the small wizard on his way out, not trusting Magnificus to make sure Lone didn’t burn himself to a crisp.
Luke took a deep breath, returning his attention to the scrybes, who were seemingly looking to him to start this ‘peaceful’ meeting. He took a deep breath, readying himself before speaking up.
"Alright. Let's talk."

AU where Inscryption is not found by Luke and is actually found by a reclusive freelance programmer that doesn’t get tracked down by Gamefuna and figures out how to talk with the scrybes

I said this as like a joke a ha ha funny goof like two weeks ago in the tags of a post on my side-blog and as the Autistic brain do when presented with a ha ha funny goof in a fandom I started thinking on it too much and now here I am with absolutely zero actual evidence for this but like
I think Magnificus is Leshy from the Beta version of Inscryption; Sacrifices Must Be Made.
They’re both trees which really isn’t that weird but in a game with like 4 central main characters it’s weird two of them are straight up plants
Leshy is a Leshy like that makes sense as a being that lives in the woods is the Scrybe of beasts like it makes sense we been knew
But why is a wizard a tree?? As Drawfee says wizards can be anything but Magnificus really has no wizard energy to him. I would not guess that his roll if I’d just seen him on his own
He doesn't even have the wizard hat like his pupils or his cards bro at least try to look the part
According to game files the green shit covering Magnificus is his beard which is both hysterical to learn and also maybe helps my case because Leshy also has a beard of green brush but whatever it’s not the biggest deal just hold on
His entire thing is his eye that tells him the future a future he cannot change
The future of his game and the world outside it and possibly even the world past Luke Carder to you, you the player
Which is interesting and very vaguely hinted at but like
During the ARG you the player, not Luke Carter, discover one of the secret codes by going back to Sacrifices must be made and adding a file into the game
What this file actually is is blank of course but it does something Leshy at the end of the beta
It gives him awareness
Awareness he did not have before. Awarness he is in a game, an unfinished game, a game that is literally about to end you are at the end of the Beta, his world is about to end but more importantly
“What have you done to me?”
“This new knowledge flooding into my head...”
“I cannot... I cannot unlearn....”
“WHTL!ESAHEAD”
“what lies ahead” implies more than just the beta’s end
This was obviously added after the full Inscryption came out, implying you just have him information that not only is his game incomplete but there is a full version and this is what will happen there as well
A future he cannot change
Leshy’s entire presence is just his eyes in Sacrifices Must Be Made we never see what he looks like
It’s not really like. Unheard of for Daniel Mullens characters to jump games. Like not at all.
So the idea that Leshy in Beta would make the jump to the completed game to save himself from the ending of an incomplete game isn’t super unheard of
Not that it matters as even the completed game will be deleted
And he knows that. He cannot unsee what lies ahead
Side tangent but Magnificus’ system feels super incomplete and in need of a rework
I know in game/out game world building Inscryption was a real card game first and the video game is based on that so it’s not really his fault magic decks suck
And his final battle’s incomplete feeling can be blamed on the game being more than half deleted at that point but at the same time
His little. Mind place. Where he unsubtly tells you to use the knife or get the damn film roll from the clock if you’re like me and choose to ignore it is super barren already. Like it just looks like that
A tile floor, collapsed columns, and a single easel. Not much else really to it.
Supposedly the version Luke is playing is incomplete in terms of like. The actual original game is concerned so like. Actually maybe???
And I mean Magnificus’ Uber-Bot stand in is the Unfinished boss, implying he isn’t a fully finished part of the game?? Right??
Okay so like obviously the game had to have a Scrybe of Magicks when it was being coded because Magic cards existed in the real card game so it’s not like he could just put himself in there
But also the entire ACTUAL game’s story is about over throwing one of the Scrybes and taking their place so like. Maybe.
Maybe not quiet like that maybe he just like. Put his own files in place of theirs. Like King Candy from Wreck it Ralph.
Because he speaks like he knows how many dialogue boxes he has before his boss battle has to start as if he doesn’t really have a choice in how much he can say before you MUST progress
He even gets kind of deleted mid-sentence while trying to warn you AFTER his fight which idk imagine a more eccentric wizard doing one of those poof gone kind of animations after giving you a cryptic clue
The only bit of actually in character, as in as the Scrybe of Magicks a boss in the video game Inscryption, dialogue Magnificus gives us is during his boss battle in which he explains how his battle mechanic actually works and talks about how your cards need more color
But in his end end fight the painting he makes for Luke to try and make him feel guilt for letting the world get deleted is black and white
And he whited out Goobert’s painting??? Like at least when he bleached are cards it was to add more color to them this he just whited out which feels like these are two different character motives
It’s a lot of maybe’s and taking leaps but this is a game with Hitler’s Satan card game as it’s central plot point so I feel like I’m allowed a little leeway here.
The irony of Leshy tearing out Magnificus’ eye with his knife and keeping it so the player can progress onward and eventually return to Beta to give Leshy that same eye all over again is not lost on me
A loop is a loop and I’m kind of obsessed with it
#Inscryption#This is a long post of nothing and has a high chance of getting edited as I recontextualize my thoughts or as Kaycee's mod things happen#So stay tuned#idk man this thoughts been rattling in my brain sense I saw an ARG rundown something about this part really messed me up#The fact that they're both trees really gets me Mags why are you like that#Also the way Mags is basically deleted from the game mid-sentence when you defeat him???#Mentally I'm always thinking about the file we give Beta Leshy to give him awareness which is exactly what the OLD_DATA does#And how absolutly fucked up it would all be if it was actually not some hitler satan thing and it was actually all our fault us the player#who made the old data and put it on the disk#but really it was Magnificus because the data was in his eye and he took it when he moved games#thus corrupting the new game he'd moved into and dooming it to deletion just as he'd seen it to do#Look I knew Daniell Mullens was a Satan Devil Demon kind of horror game maker when I walked it it did not surprise me#but maybe I personally wanna fuss around with that concept and make it a fucked up little time loop of suffering#Instead of game makers trapped in their games as a kind of hell torture thing#Maybe I just really wanna make Magnificus extremely fucked up and upsetting to me personally leave me alone#I'm in my own little brain thoughts getting emotions over Magnificus because I gave him a lot of fanon backstory#And I'm sticking with it

John Torrington: Family Ties
(Previous posts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
When Torrington sailed off into the frozen sunset, he left behind his sister, parents, and two stepbrothers. He probably also left behind friends and co-workers. Maybe even a pet. He was unmarried, but he could have had a significant other waiting for him. However, we don’t know anything about his friends, co-workers, pets, or lovers. His family, on the other hand, we know about for sure, and while we don’t know the sort of relationship he had with any of them, we do know he allotted a significant amount of his pay to his stepmother, so they must have been close enough for him to contribute that much from his own earnings.
How his family responded to the news of his death, I don’t know. It’s something I think about a lot. But his family had to move on, and they did, living their lives without him as best they could. What happened to Torrington’s family after he left? Are there any living relatives today who remember him?
When Owen Beattie prepared to exhume the bodies on Beechey Island, he first sought out permission from descendants and relatives. I sometimes see people summarize Beattie’s attempts by saying that he did get permission from the descendants. But that is not what happened.
Beattie published a short article in The Times, a major newspaper in London, asking for any relatives to contact him. Exactly what he said in this article I do not know, and trust me, I’ve tried to find it through the Times’s archives. Whatever the article said, it didn’t refer to Torrington by name, or it would have shown up in my searches. This article was the method he used in his attempts to contact the descendants of the Beechey Boys, according to Beattie’s book, Frozen in Time. And he received no response.
Later, some of Hartnell’s relatives contacted him, after the pictures from the first round of exhumations were published in newspapers and magazines, but relatives of Torrington and Braine never contacted him. That means Torrington’s relatives did not give permission to have his body exhumed. Torrington became well known after photos of his mummified body were spread around the world through various media outlets, so at this point, if there are any relatives of his still alive, it’s odd that none have come forward.
The silence from the Torrington descendants could be explained in a number of ways. Here are the most likely possibilities, in my opinion:
There are no living Torrington relatives.
There are living Torrington relatives, but they don’t know they’re related to him.
There are living Torrington relatives who know they’re related to him, but they never saw Beattie’s article and they have yet to hear anything about the exhumations on Beechey.
There are living Torrington relatives who know they’re related to him and they did find out about the exhumations, but they don’t want to come forward for personal reasons.
The easiest way to answer this riddle would be to trace Torrington’s family to the modern day, a project I’ve been working on off and on for the past year. I’m 99% sure there are living relatives, but I haven’t actually found them yet. I still have a lot of branches of the family tree to verify, and that could take a while.
If Torrington does have living relatives, they wouldn’t be his direct descendants because he never had children, unless he had a secret love child we don’t know about. Any living relatives of his would have to be from either his extended family, such as his cousins, or through his sister, Esther. I have yet to be able to determine who is grandparents were, so I can’t trace his extended family, which makes Esther my best bet for trying to trace the Torrington family line. Luckily, Esther is much easier to find in the archives than her brother.
John Torrington left his home behind for good on May 19, 1845. A year and a day later, his sister got married. On May 20, 1846, Esther Shaw Torrington married Thomas Burgess in Ashton-under-Lyne. Thomas’s occupation is listed as a piecer—the same occupation the Hoyle brothers had in the 1841 census. His father, Robert, is listed as a mechanic. Esther’s father, William, is still a coachman. Esther could not sign her name, but Thomas could.
It’s interesting that Esther is living in Ashton now. Her stepmother is from there, and if the James and William Hoyle in the 1841 census are the right Hoyles, then her stepbrothers were probably living there at the time as well. But why was Esther, a single woman (or “spinster,” as it says on the marriage certificate), living there when Mary’s address in the allotment book was still in Manchester? Did Ashton have better work opportunities? Better air? Esther has no occupation listed on her marriage certificate, but many working-class women worked, both before marriage and after. She probably had a job, but it didn’t get mentioned on the marriage certificate because women’s jobs weren’t usually recorded. Was she working in Ashton? Staying with her stepbrothers? What brought her there?
Perhaps what brought her there was Thomas. Thomas Burgess was baptized January 1, 1826, in Ashton-under-Lyne, the son of Robert and Anne Burgess. Robert was a joiner in 1826, which is a type of carpenter. By 1841, Robert had become a mechanic, and all three of his sons, including 15-year-old Thomas, had become cotton piecers.
There are many possible ways for Esther and Thomas to have met, but of course I’m going to look at all the similar pieces and try to cram them together. William and James Hoyle were piecers in Ashton. Thomas Burgess and his brothers were piecers in Ashton. Maybe Esther met Thomas through her stepbrothers and moved to Ashton be get married. Or maybe she’d already moved to Ashton and Thomas never knew her brothers. It’s all just speculation, but sometimes speculation can land at the right spot.
Another piece of speculation I can’t help but consider is whether Esther thought of her brother John on the day of her marriage or not. Was she disappointed he wasn’t there? Did they toast to his health in his absence? Had John met Thomas before leaving, or had Esther met him only in the past year? Did Esther dictate a letter to tell John about her marriage? Was the letter waiting for John with the good news, a letter he would never read because he was already buried in the frozen ground on Beechey? Best not to speculate too long on that…
Esther shows up next in the 1851 census, and I love Esther because, out of all the Torringtons, she’s the only one who consistently shows up in the census records starting with this year. To make things even easier, Esther not only stays in the census from here on out, she also stays in Ashton-under-Lyne. In 1851, Esther and Thomas are living with his parents. Robert is back to being a joiner, and both Esther and Thomas are employed in the cotton industry.
Tumblr media
I think Thomas is a cotton spinner, and I want to say Esther is a cotton carder, but it’s hard for me to decipher the handwriting. They don’t have children yet, but they may be refraining from starting their own family until they are able to support themselves. Or maybe they just haven’t had any luck yet.
By 1861, they’ve moved out on their own, but Esther is incorrectly listed as “Hester,” which made me almost miss this census record.
Tumblr media
It looks like Thomas isn’t here, but don’t worry, he’s alive and well, he’s just on the previous page of the record book.
Tumblr media
Thomas and Esther—sorry, Hester—are living on Cotton St in Ashton-under-Lyne. Thomas is now a flour carter, and Esther is a housewife raising three young daughters, Eliza, Sarah, and Mary J. Three kids since the last census, congrats Esther and Thomas! But let’s back up a bit.
Eliza is listed as their oldest child at age 7 in 1861. Eliza was baptized March 19, 1854, (fun fact, Franklin’s crew would be officially declared dead on March 31, 1854—okay, maybe that’s not such a fun fact). Her baptism registry also lists her birthday as February 14. Thomas is listed as a painter, but a painter of what? I doubt this means he became an artist. There were plenty of things that needed to be painted—from houses to coaches—so he probably did something more along those lines rather than portraits or landscapes.
Tumblr media
When I first saw that Esther and Thomas didn’t have their first child until eight years after they got married, I thought that sounded off. Why would they wait so long? After doing some digging, I realized they hadn’t waited.
Two years earlier, on July 24, 1852, Esther gave birth to a baby girl, Sarah Ann. Sarah Ann was baptized on August 22 that year. At this point, Thomas is still a cotton spinner.
Tumblr media
I assume the name Sarah Ann is in honor of their mothers—Esther’s birth mother, Sarah, and Thomas’s mother, Anne (way better combo than Renesmee). You may have noticed that Esther and Thomas had a daughter named Sarah in the 1861 census, but that she was only four. Sarah Ann should have been nine in the census. Why are there two vastly different ages for Sarah? That would be because this isn’t the same Sarah.
Sarah Ann died in 1853, at only six months old. She was buried on February 13. A year and a day later, Eliza would be born.
Sarah Ann is the only child from before Eliza that I’ve been able to find, but that’s not saying there weren’t more. Actually, while I was double checking that last sentence, I stumbled across another possible child of Esther and Thomas—Henry Burgess, born January 4, 1850, and died sometime in the quarter of Oct-Nov-Dec that same year. However, a quick check on the UK General Register Office website says that the maiden name for the mother of this Henry Burgess was Lee, and there was an Esther Lee from Ashton-under-Lyne, so this might be a false alarm. But it’s yet another avenue I’ll want to explore before dismissing completely. SEE UPDATE FOR MORE INFO!
Esther and Thomas’s second daughter named Sarah was born May 27, 1856, and she was baptized on September 21. Thomas is listed as a bobbin painter, which must have been the type of painter he was when Eliza was born too.
Tumblr media
Their next daughter, Mary Jane, was born June 26, 1859, and was baptized August 21. Most of my genealogy work happens on Ancestry, but they don’t have a copy of Mary Jane’s baptism registry. I have her birth certificate on order, but it won’t get here before this post is published, so I can’t say if Thomas was still a painter or if he’d moved on to his 1861 occupation of flour carter.
In 1862, Esther and Thomas welcomed a son, Thomas, on June 7. He was baptized on July 27.
Tumblr media
Thomas’s occupation looks like “Larter,” although I can’t find information on what that would be. At first, I thought the “L” was actually a “C.” That would have made him a “Carter,” the same occupation he had in 1861, but there’s another record that looks like it clearly says “Larter.”
Tumblr media
Esther and Thomas had another daughter, Anne, born on September 15, 1865, and baptized October 29. Thomas’s occupation really looks like “Larter” here, but what is a larter?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Whatever it might be (SEE UPDATE), he’s not one by the next census in 1871.
Tumblr media
Thomas is now a bookkeeper in a painter’s business. Eliza and Sarah are working as cotton weavers while Mary and Thomas Jr. are in school. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes the next year. In 1872, Thomas passes away on September 15, at only 46 years old.
What did he die of?
Lead poisoning.
I admit I had a minor freak out when I saw lead poisoning was the cause of Esther’s husband’s death, considering the role it is suspected to have played in her brother’s death as well. But Thomas and John died twenty-six years apart and may never have met, so this is simply a coincidence—but what a coincidence.
How did Thomas get lead poisoning though? My bet is on paint. In the Victorian era, some paint was lead-based, and Thomas had worked as a painter and then in a paint business as a bookkeeper. He could have easily been exposed to lead-based paint to a toxic degree.
But there was some happy news for Esther the next year. Her oldest surviving daughter, Eliza, married John Thomas Manifield on August 19, 1873. Eliza’s father is listed as being a bookkeeper despite being deceased by this point. It also says that Eliza is 20 when she should only be 19 in 1873, but this does look like the right Eliza, and there’s another record from a few years later that pretty much confirms it. I’ll get to that in a little bit.
Tumblr media
There’s more good news in 1874—or I think it’s good news. It seems like Esther started marrying her daughters off quick after Thomas’s death, because Sarah got hitched on November 14 to a twenty-one-year-old man named Arthur Dale. Sarah’s father is still listed as a bookkeeper, despite being dead for two years. There’s also an age discrepancy issue with this marriage certificate that almost made me discard it as not being the right Sarah.
Tumblr media
Sarah’s age is listed as 20, but she was born in 1856, which means she should have been only 18. Did she age herself up on purpose? In the 1881 census, her age is 26, which is still too old, but in 1891 her age is 34, which would coincide with being born in May of 1856 (the census took place in April). So, I think this is the right Sarah Burgess, but either she lied on her marriage certificate—and the next census—or she gave the wrong age by accident. She couldn’t sign her name, meaning she was probably illiterate, so she also probably couldn’t do math, and maybe by 1891 someone had finally corrected her. Who knows!
Unfortunately, the next record I found is a sad one. Esther Torrington Burgess died September 19, 1878, at age 51. If I’m reading the death certificate correctly, I believe she died of a combination of uterine cancer and phthisis—aka tuberculosis. John Thomas Manifield, her son-in-law, signed as being present at the time of death, which is how I know the marriage certificate for Eliza belongs to the right Eliza.
Eliza and Sarah were both married at this point, but I don’t know what happened to Mary. There are too many Mary Burgesses—including one born in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1860, a year after Mary Jane, making it nearly impossible to be sure which records are for the right one. There was one Mary Burgess who ended up in a convalescent home, but it might be the other Mary.
As for Thomas Jr. and Anne, they were still underage, and they ended up in the care of their uncle John Burgess by the time of the 1881 census.
I haven’t had a chance to do much research into this next generation of Torringtons as of this time. I do know that Eliza and John Thomas immigrated to America at some point after the 1881 census—but then she died in 1890 from cancer. She didn’t have any children, and John Thomas Manifield would remarry the next year and live out the rest of his life in America.
I’ve started research into Sarah but am not close to finishing. All I can say at this point is that Sarah Burgess Dale had at least six children, possibly as many as ten, although they didn’t all survive to adulthood. I’ve found her in a family tree on Ancestry, but those aren’t always accurate, so I need to verify all the children first before climbing further out onto that limb. But if there are any living Torrington relatives, I have a feeling a good portion of them are probably from the Dale family.
I can’t say much about Mary because, like I said, there are too many Marys to track her down. And I haven’t had a chance to do much research into Thomas and Anne yet because I’d hoped to finish my research into Sarah before moving on to them. Although, I did find some records for Anne when casually searching for Burgesses (she may have married a man with an unusual name, making it easy to find—thank you, Anne!), but I want to go through them carefully first before announcing anything as fact.
But what happened to John Torrington’s parents and stepbrothers?
Well, as for his stepbrothers, I haven’t had much of a chance to look into them yet. From what I’ve found, William Hoyle is too common of a name, and yet I can’t seem to find one born in the right area. He’s a ghost who disappeared from the records as far as I can tell. Either that, or he’s the William Hoyle who had a problem with stealing things and got shipped off to Australia.
For James Warren Hoyle, so far I know that he got married and became a fruiterer (fruit salesmen). But it looks like he died in 1864, according to a probate record. There are a couple James Hoyles out there—and it looks like two of them married women named Jane, which is not helpful—but the probate record says James Warren Hoyle, and that has to be Mary Torrington’s boy.
Speaking of Mary Torrington, she and her husband are also difficult to track. There’s a census record from 1861 that I think might be for them, but I can’t be sure.
Tumblr media
Mary looks right—she would have been about 64 and she’s from Ashton-under-Lyne, so her info checks out, which means this should be the right William, but I don’t know when or where William was born, so I can’t be sure. But if it’s him, he’s had a change of occupation. After decades of being a coachman, he’s now a tea and coffee dealer. They’re also not in Manchester, but St George Hanover Square. That’s the same place the other John Torrington, JT1, was staying in the 1841 census. Could this be his parents? They were also named Mary and William. I really don’t know if these are the right Torringtons or not.
But I did find the death certificate for Mary.
Mary Torrington died August 8, 1866, at age 69. She’s listed as the widow of William Torrington, so he must have died at some point before this date. William the tea and coffee dealer died in 1862, so if that’s the same William, he died four years earlier. It looks like Mary had been living with Esther because she died at her house. Esther signed the certificate with her mark. At this point, Esther had lost her birth mother, her brother, her father, and now her stepmother. At least one of her stepbrothers has also died. In six years, she would lose her husband too.
Esther had a rough life, losing at least one child and outliving most of her family. I hope that in my search for her brother’s legacy, I can honor hers as well.
Next: An afterlife of sorts for John Torrington—the pictures from his exhumation living on in the media.

Sports teams designed by neural network
One of the many impressive things about neural networks is how well the same basic algorithm can adapt to very different kinds of problems. I’ve used the same framework, Char-rnn, to produce things like recipes, Dr. Who episode titles, D&D spells, story titles, metal band names, Pokemon, and paint colors. With no prior knowledge of what the input dataset is, the neural net looks at it a few characters at a time and learns to predict what comes next. Once a neural net can predict the next character in a set, it’s easy to make it generate text by giving it a single character and asking it “what next?” and then “what next?” again and again.
Here, the neural network has to learn a dataset that would probably be very difficult to explain to any sort of artificial intelligence: the names of sports teams.
“You know how we humans like to run around kicking or throwing balls into nets? Well, we do. Anyways, we need names for the teams so we know what to shout to help them during games. No, we also shout when the games are on television. It’s hard to explain.”
The training data was a list of almost 46,000 high school, college, and professional teams, generously provided by MascotDB.com.
Checkpoint: 8%
By the time it had gone through 8% of the dataset, the neural network had learned about spaces, capital letters, plurals, and line breaks, though not about any actual team names. It thinks e’s are probably common. These would be easy to shout, though.
Moltee Raiees Raite Ballees Narte Calaees Bareen Coilers Raise Callen Caaeees Rareen Cartees Barien Baleees Corte Colteee Cares
At a higher creativity setting, the names are somewhat... less shoutable.
Mal Ceinrl Melga Carynoads uamctes Biiihtes Jaatohi jrpmWhollrioa ongmgis Beettt Riiara fiicly neadks Soiiln Uakeas Cirecs C vieee Sa lBlrrl Nutl Jatreeh Rthglrrs Saihei UilanlTr Pgllnms BecoNviroe Ntnrraintoee RittaotboiRmiirlovatts
Checkpoint: 23%
Now at 23% through the dataset, the neural network has eased back on the e’s. The combination “ers” is now its new favorite. It has not yet managed to produce any actual city or team names yet.
Vande Corte Carters Galed Cares Vande Carders Geen Calders St. Corthors Callers Calle Ballers Dander Banders
Checkpoint: 46%
The neural network is now trying very hard to spell “tigers”, “panthers” and “cardinals” but has not yet figured out exactly how this works. The words “State” and “College” have featured prominently enough, however, that it has successfully learned them. The neural network has also somehow figured out how to apply suffixes to them, although not how to apply the correct ones.
Wanterloo Sarrians Oulondo Callens Stateston College Tagers Staters College Tagers Dutenton Tagers Dunger Parthers Wanernion Cardinans Statet College Balldons Sacreter Wardinals
Checkpoint: 107%
In a surprise leap, the Bulldogs have taken the lead. The neural network is still struggling with Cardinals and Tigers. And wherever the heck Furton is, it has been deemed Very Important in sports.
“No, bulldogs and tigers aren’t actually good at sports. They’re just fearsome. ... no, cardinals aren’t particularly fearsome. It’s hard to explain.”
Furton Bulldogs North College Colders Marina Cartinals Furton Rads Marine Bulldogs Corton Tagers Furten Cougars Burning College Bulldogs
Checkpoint: 198%
Now the neural network can spell things. It will hallucinate nonexistent counties and colleges all day, and assign them tigers and eagles and cardinals as mascots. It has basically solved mascot names - if you want an ordinary mascot name, the neural network can pick one for you. With a small chance that you’ll end up being the Radgers or the Tancans.
Lunter County Tigers Wort County Bulldogs Lord County Stars Bullson Tigers Torcond Cougars Portsan Cardinals Troston Radgers Turson County Eagles New York Hankers Bringson Tancans
At the high-creativity setting, however, the team names get a bit more interesting. You would not want to be on any of these teams.
New mork Punts Borton Files Wurt Academy Eiglrs Pirtsbuugh pantons Frirg City Corgars Longer Golden Tuckems New York Hoomin Lions Hontbern Academy Land Pontpins Fart Mirea Chuds Buncawnia Ragbocks Tinstol-Hulbbynhibnbla Tigers Comncamola Slimos Turreritite Academy Beans
Checkpoint: 3280%
Let the neural network continue learning, and the low-creativity results look much the same, while the high-creativity mascots get more pronounceable but not a bit less weird. Same with the place names.
I would actually like to see the mascot costumes for some of these.
Bleondef College Pheelans hlel Fratthawks Artfy Ehole Lancers Riomport Arabemme-Warly Driton Bopcets Hickmine Tigers Liverville Academy S.inars Bloodman Park Mustangs Dooming Bearcats Blooliky Batbles Lickin Wildcats Joviet Ponelards Lameland Cuishalk Gerbuts Warton Arue Mess Ever Panthers Bippinsmore Red Yellowjackets

Retire the Women’s tag team titles.
On December 24th, 2018, Vince McMahon announced the creation of a new set of titles: The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, taking another step forward in the Women’s revolution.  A few weeks later, the Titles were unveiled to mostly positive reviews on A Moment of Bliss and it was revealed that the first champions were to be crowned at Elimination Chamber. In that Match, Sasha Banks & Bayley defeated Nia Jax & Tamina, The IIconics, Carmella & Naomi, The Riott Squad (Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan) Fire and Desire (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville). The crowd was hot. They were excited and they were ready to take another step forward with this new-ish concept.
One and a half years later and they literally have fallen to the depths of forgettable hell and more recently been on an upturn WIth Sasha and Bayley as Champions, along with The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane). These belts have seen literally the same rollercoaster existence as most titles. It's seen its high, then extremely low, and now kinda back on the rise but to be perfectly honest: It’s not a title that can be sustained for long. If I'm being honest here, the Women’s tag team titles should be retired.
The start of the titles rebirth was red hot. Sasha and Bayley were honestly the perfect team to become the first champs. Two wrestlers who are best friends, who are a good team and they gave the titles immediate prestige. They welcomed all challengers from Raw, Smackdown, and even NXT. They gave us hope for these titles, and they gave us a clear path to where their titles should go.
Then the Iiconics won the tag belts at Wrestlemania and started the immediate descent into obscurity.
Now, It’s not their fault. The Iiconics were a good choice to become second champions but the issue lies within the booking. For the first few months, it was a big focal point, then they just were not booked. The Iiconics were not used on TV, they disappeared for a while and they only popped up every now and then. They went a full month without a title defense until they lost them to the makeshift team of Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. This Cycle was continued  on to the Kabuki Warriors. These Titles were basically an afterthought and became a prop to show the fans “Hey look, I’m important”. They then booked the titles in an TLC match with the Kabuki Warriors challenging Becky Lynch and Charlotte.
That's not a typo, The Kabuki Warriors challenged Becky Lynch and Charlotte to challenge them to a match at TLC. That was the most confusing line or dialogue I heard  in a very long time. The champs retained and then Asuka spent a few months trying to become a double champ by challenging for Becky’s Raw Women's Championship. Basically It took WWE 3 months, from late December to early April to give us another Women’s Tag Team Title match where Bliss and Cross would win the titles in the opening match against the Kabuki warriors at Wrestlemania: The COVID Show. SInce then, it’s started to see a second rise, with Banks and Bayley winning the titles and having consistent TV Time with the belts, mainly because at the time of writing this Bayley is the Women’s champion and requires tv time so they killed two birds with one stone.
They actually need to kill this bird with stone, or a giant boulder hurled by the combined strength of Braun Strowman, Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre.
There are 2 big issues with the title belts: Exposure and focus and Realistic depth. Remember when I said the titles could be defended on all 3 brands, Raw SMackdown and NXT. Guess how many times they've been featured on NXT. TWICE. Only TWO title matches. Granted, one was more recent but still just 2. The titles disappeared 3 times in its history. The titles were nowhere to be seens for 2 weeks to a full few months, and if they were seen, they weren't the focus. When a championship is not seen or isn't a focus of a feud. If the title doesn't get the proper exposure and become props to justify a single feud, the title loses its luster. It becomes worthless. During those missing times, the titles could have been in NXT doing literally anything. Shayna and her crew, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir could have held the titles for a little bit. Team Kick(Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai) could've had a quick run.The Titles could have been used to help give NXT a little more eyes to see the product a bit more, but instead they were just props. Exposed just to be a belt for a challenger to the main women's titles or not even a forefront until your biggest show.
Currently, NXT has ladies on the roster who are currently in a team. Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzales, Tegan Nox and Shotzi Blackheart, Kayden Carter and Kacy Catanzaro. These teams in NXT can give the title’s some exposure and focus if they win them but this lies a second big issue: Realistic depth.
I'm not saying these teams are not real teams. They are and they can work with the titles but think about it. These are teams that realistically cannot beat Sasha and Bayley. They are amazing workers but the way Sasha and Bayley are presented, they won't drop the titles to any of these duos unless they themselves are built up, which brings up the depth issue. Kayden Carter and Catanzaro are jobbers for the more established stars. Dakota Kai literally said she has her eyes on the NXT Women’s title. Tegan Nox literally just became number one contender to the NXT Women’s championship, and Shotzi had a promo, in a tank, talking about her path to the title. If they win the Tag team titles, then you created a huge catch 22 for your Women’s division.
For example, let's say Tegan and Shotzi win the titles. To get the titles over, they have to be focused on the teams and the titles, which means Tegan and Shotzi won't be focusing on the NXT Women’s championship, which means there 2 less ladies being major threats to that title. Then if Tegan or Shotzi becomes a threat, then the focus will be off the tag team titles again and they become props. It’s a balancing issue and it exposes the fact that there really isn't any depth for these titles. The majority of the teams that were around when the belts existed are gone now. There is no realistic team that can take the titles off. Hell, I'm sure they’re about to have ASUKA and IO Shirai take the belts off Sasha and Bayley. Then you’ll basically have an even worse situation as you will have 2 top stars as tag team champions, just like Austin and HHH back in 2001.
The tag titles should be retired. No Depth, lack of exposure and focus early on really put the bullet in the skull of the shelf life. The idea was a good wrong but the booking destroyed it. To be perfectly honest, they shouldn't have made a Women’s tag team title, They should've made a midcard belt for the ladies. This should've been the birth of a Women’s Intercontinental championship belt, for the lower and mid carders. But that is an Idea for another time.
Thank you for reading this, I put a lot of time and effort in this and appreciate any positive feedback you may have. This is my first time blogging about wrestling so I do appreciate any help you guys may have :)

Mob psycho brainworms.... @lunanitic-moon has been helping my insanity
Under the read more is my rambling... feel free to ask me bout my shoving scar and car into this ive been having fun ,,
Au wise i like imagining it as a season 4 where Reigen got very desperate for a new employee, cuz people were getting run ragged when theres only 2 people there, and Serizawa is taking night school lessons so isn't able to be around the entire time,
and after making a kinda really bad job listing supposedly no person who's not going through their own problems would take, Scarlette took the job cuz her self esteem is so low she thinks she deserves the shittiest job on there that she can walk to, but also realizes it's absolutely a scam the moment she she's actually there and is too much of a people pleaser to escape this situation + meets her new coworkers n gets worried cuz 'do they even know' and ends up Stuck There
and Carter is just along for the ride to torment people but he probably befriends Dimple and Tome (he cannot see ghosts but he is fully going to beileve they exist and this is where everyone translating for Dimple comes in. Tome Dimple and Carter working together to harrass people. Friendship)
Rattles it's been fun 4 me, im bad at knowing what and how to draw lately though so bweah
I think scarlette fits well with how mp100 deals with arcs kinda only cuz she has so many issues thats slowly ruining her i think its fun to shove her into another world where people save her and get it through her thick skull that hiding everything thats hurting her from the people who care will only hurt them too cuz they wanna help, shes not a burden

Medical Marijuana in WV?
Medical Marijuana is being confirmed tomorrow in the WV legislature. This is an issue that it is important for Christians to give well-informed answers balancing love for neighbor, allowing the Biblical texts for pain relief to speak, and creation’s goodness balanced with an awareness of the fallen condition of man and the scriptural propositions toward sobriety.
Tumblr media
Here are a few articles I’d recommend for you to check out on the issues.
Russel Moore answers this questions very well in this Q&A, “Is medical marijuana ok for Christians”?
Medical Marijuana, What Does the Bible Say?
Pro’s vs. Cons Good info here.
Marijuana to the Glory of God - a good article by Jeff Lacine.
Joe Carter gives some clarity to what from a media perspective can be a complex issue in The FAQ’s: What you Should Know about Medical Marijuana
John Piper answers the question “Should marijuana be legalized?” He responds in typical Piper fashion as Biblical, passionate, balanced, well thought, pastoral, and with long lists of adjectives :-). Here’s one of his articles following similar fashion in this article, “Don’t let your mind go to pot.”
Although a little older Albert Mohler addresses the issue at the end of this episode of “The Briefing.”
Joe Carder again with a great post “9 Things You Should Know About the Health Effects of Marijuana”
For a short book on the issue I would recommend Can I Smoke Pot? – Marijuana in Light of Scripture coauthored by a friend of mine.
