The Merch Goes On and On

This last pap walk was different. Megs took the pics on Saturday, April 8th, but embargoed them until Tuesday, April 11th 5 p.m. GMT. Only E! carried the pics until then. To my knowledge, this is the first time she does this.

So why did she do it?

Basically, she gage E! a 24-hr exclusive. The pics weren’t generally available until well after the E! News Weekly broadcast which featured them prominently. I found this very confusing as she usually gets as much press as she can as quickly as she can.

I didn’t think to take a screenshot (Sorry! I’ll do better next time) but that baby stayed at the top of Meg’s Google results for most of yesterday. Now, you would expect the organic search result to be the pap walk itself, not this. E! must have really pushed this little advert.

Once the pic embargo was lifted, the diamond ring article was quickly overtaken by the Brit tab juggernauts. However, it’s still up there one day later. That’s quite a promo push they’re giving it. Come to think of it, June wedding season is right around the corner, isn’t it? Hmmmmm.

The pic embargo was all about selling stuff, then. No more, no less.

Thanks to the Jamaica wedding pics Harry so thoughtfully gave her, Megs has upgraded her merching status. She used to pimp $100 monogramed jewelry and $50 pleather pants through the DM, the Sun, and BS Weekly and now she’s selling $32,000 diamond rings and $500 Barbour jackets through E! and People.

This is not happenstance. Back in February Megs had a huge “emerging fashion icon” (no I did not make up that term, I go it from her old K&C bio) promo drive. That was Megs using her supposed three-month stay in Nott Cott (which KP would neither confirm nor deny) to fish for fashion sponsorships. She had a ton of articles out touting the supposed “Meghan Effect.” This was the pitch part in that particular article.

Note the term “if she chooses to champion it.” Hmmmm.

And, in case, you have any doubts that this was Megs touting her chops as a brand ambassador. This little gem came from her side.

Now, if that’s not marketing copy, I don’t know what is. If you go back to her High Street pap walk articles, you’ll notice that they had no Barbour buy links, just Missoma. She didn’t have the sponsorship nailed down yet.

She has it now. The High Street pap walk got it for her.

Still not convinced? Did you notice the J.Crew links for the Kate Middleton cosplay Breton top? What comes to mind when you think about J.Crew? Preppy, right? Not a term I would’ve used to describe Meghan’s style (ripped jeans, junkie beanie, scraggly weave) up to that point, frankly.

I guess that “edgy” and “street-smart” style we all heard from back in October (when it was touted as “more stylish” that Kate’s stodgy traditional faves) didn’t quite work for her.

She’s “preppy” now. If you go to her fashion blogs, you’ll notice that her Jamaica beach get-up featured a J.Crew tunic and a Madewell (J.Crew’s “rustic chic” brand) panama hat.

So the February “emerging fashion icon” drive worked. She already had a Mulberry sponsorship, and this time she got Erdem for the wedding, Barbour, and J. Crew.

So, I’ve heard a lot of chatter about how closing the Tig and not putting out a Spring Reitman’s collection means that she’s stopped the cashing-in and is being all “discreet and mysterious” in preparation for an upcoming engagement.

SHE’S NOT. SHE’S CASHING IN EVEN MORE.

She’s gone from imitation jewelry to $32,000 diamond rings. She’s also using more higher-visibility outlets and more sophisticated tactics to put the merchandise out.

I’ve also heard a lot of chatter about how the Jamaica wedding was Harry’s way of introducing her to his circle and showing her off as a future wife.

IT WASN’T. IT WAS A TWO-DAY FASHION SHOW FOR HER SPONSORS.

Again, tons of noise about how the Tig closure was about her upcoming engagement or (if you go by what her press puts out) her desire to focus on her fauxmanitarian activities.

IT WASN’T. SHE DOESN’T NEED THE BLOG ANYMORE BECAUSE SHE’S PUSHING MERCH THROUGH E! AND PEOPLE.

There’s also people saying that this is all new and unexpected and a new step forward in the relationship.

IT ISN’T. THIS WAS PLANNED AS FAR BACK AS FEBRUARY.

And there’s a lot of chit-chat about how she’s undergone a “princess makeover” to be more British and classic and more princess-like in anticipation of an engagement.

SHE’S NOT. SHE WAS TOLD SHE HAD TO LOOK LIKE KATE TO SELL STUFF SO SHE’S MIMICKING.

She’s changing her brand. That’s why she’s jettisoning the Tig and her former “edgy street-wise L.A. girl” persona. The brands that are interested in her “royal” status aren’t edgy or street-smart. They’re preppy and traditional.

Ergo, Megs is now preppy and traditional too.

It doesn’t come naturally to her. That’s why she makes mistakes like wearing wellies and Barbour on a flower run in the middle of a bone-dry city, putting on an evening gown and stilettos for a beach wedding, and wearing a freaking Breton top to yoga. She’s an East L.A. girl pretending to be a Stowe grad and she doesn’t quite know how to do that.

But she has to do it if she wants to keep her sponsors.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT SELLING CRAP.

The merching is still going on, people. It’s also getting more exploitative of the BRF as she’s now using her “not technically a fiancee but it’s happening for sure” promo drive to sell repliKate tops and engagement rings.

I don’t know why Harry and the BRF and letting her do this. Maybe he’s blinded by love and doesn’t see the exploitation. Maybe he’s so in love with her that he’s willing to let her do anything she wants. Maybe he’s okay with it because he plans to marry her and share the loot.

However, I will note that he’s let other people do this. Guy Pelly papped the princes coming out of his club. Ellie Goulding puts out romance and baby rumors to promo her albums and so does Joss. He’s not the only royal who does this either. Mary Dyer’s pub gets a pimp every now and then. Ed Sheeran got to make “knighting gone wrong” stories to promo his new album.

So this isn’t unheard of. He may love her so much he’s letting her make money hand over fist before he puts a ring on it and she can’t (presumably) cash in any longer. He may just be letting her make money while he’s banging her because why not, he’s not marrying her anyway.

The bottom line is MEGS IS STILL SELLING CRAP.

He may still marry her in the future, who the heck knows at this point. The one thing we know, however, is that SHE’S STILL CASHING IN.

Just keep in mind that nothing you see or read about this “romance” or “imminent engagement” is real. It’s all a massive promo drive to get you to BUY HER STUFF.
