What’s your take on sometimes using vitamin c to help acidify a dogs urine ?

It potentially works, which is fine if you’re not dealing with oxalate crystals, but I usually use other things as I find many dogs and cats protest the usual citrus flavors.

also re: kitty with urinary issues. cats need to have a very acidic ph in their urine, otherwise, crystals form. in order to acidify my cat's urine when he was having this problem, we put him on vitamin c (with vet approval). it was 250mg crushed into his wet food a day. cats don't need vitamin c like we do, so it just passes through and out in their urine, and the acidity helps dissolve any urinary crystals! you can get a medication to do the same but it's expensive; vit c is cheap at walmart.

Brampton Sauvignon Blanc paired with Selles-Sur-Cher

Starting with something simple and elegant, I decided to indulge in the classic pairing of Sauvignon Blanc and goat cheese.  Typically, pairing native products with each other is a good start to finding a pairing that works well.  I've tried many French Sauvignon Blanc's with many French goat cheeses; I know this pairing works well on a variety of levels.  I wanted to stick inside the classic framework but add a South African Sauvignon Blanc to demonstrate how this pairing can be tweaked for all people and all budgets.  

 The Cheese 

Selles-Sur-Cher (Centre, Loire Valley, France- Pasteurized Goat's Milk)

Ever since the Food and Drug Administration cracked down and made it very difficult to get TRUE, unpasteurized French cheeses, it gets harder (and more expensive) to find excellent specimens.  Selles-Sur-Cher is a classic French goat cheese that has been made virtually the same way for hundreds of years.  The goat's milk comes from a single-milking.  It’s then left to acidify and a small touch of microbial rennet is added to the milk.  The cheese is formed into 8-12 ounce pucks and sprinkled with an innocuous vegetable ash.  At one time, these cheeses were sprinkled with ash to protect them from unwanted microbes or parasites, but today the ash is merely cosmetic.  After a specific period of aging (I have been getting mine around the 30-60 day mark) the cheese has lost a considerable amount of weight.  The outside has formed a nice, velvety rind and the interior is adorned with flowing cheese encompassing a chalky-white center.  The texture, or textures, play very well off one another.  The interior-center is reminiscent of a young goat cheese, with tart, lip-smacking acidity and brightness.  While on the contrary, the ripened interior just underneath the rind has developed some complexity with a little funk and just the right amount of herbaceousness.  The rippled rind has more bitterness than one might expect, but does its job well, clinging to the paste and protecting the interior.  There is nothing more unsettling than seeing an improperly cared for goat cheese that looks like a bloated-deflated airbag, leaking its precious interior all over the place.  If you see this at your local cheese shop, grab the nearest cheesemonger in sight and punch him directly in the face. 

 The Selles-Sur-Cher I have been enjoying lately is a pasteurized version that is widely available in the United  States.  It has a lovely flavor and texture.  When ripe, it can be quite good. However, it never quite develops the complexity as its unpasteurized brethren.  When tasting this cheese it is VERY important that you consume an equal part of each "part" of the cheese.  What I mean by this is that the extreme center of the cheese will taste vastly different from the exterior of the cheese.  Try to cut a piece where you can taste all three dimensions, being the center, the ooze and the rind.  It is also important to taste these three dimensions separately, as this will add to your knowledge of cheese and enhance future tasting experiments.  Be sure to hold the cheese up to your nose and smell it, much like you'd do at a wine tasting.  Notice its appearance.  Upon taking it in your mouth, the first thing that hits your palate should be the acidity.  It grabs your tongue by its sides and yells, "What’s up bizzotch!”  Next, you will notice the languid, almost-buttery ooze that accompanies the interior.  The ooze is a sharp contrast to the extreme interior in texture and taste.  You will notice a subtle herbaceousness that plays well against the bitterness of the rind.  The texture of the three different dimensions could be a discussion all its own.  Selles-Sur-Cher is one part chalky, one part oozy, one part crinkly and all parts delicious.  Repeat this tasting enough times to where you feel you could comfortably describe this cheese in a letter to your best friend. 

 The Wine  

Brampton Sauvignon Blanc 2009 (Stellenbosch, South Africa 13.5%)

One of the big 6-7 grape varietals, Sauvignon Blanc is one of those benchmark wines that should be considered in any goat cheese tasting.  I chose this particular wine because, quite simply, it’s good and it’s got a relatively high alcohol content for this style of wine.  It also possesses all of the qualities I look for in a Sauvignon Blanc.  A classic French Sauvignon Blanc is known for its crispness and acidity, as well a myriad of flavors ranging from hay, grass and straw to gunflint and cat urine.  What I like about these newer producers of Sauvignon Blanc is their ability to take these classic flavors and add their own unique interpretation, thousands of miles away from the place these grapes were originally grown.  Although I enjoy the austere, sometimes pedantic French Sauvignon Blancs, I find the value in these New World Sauvignon Blanc's too good to pass up.  (If you don't believe me, pick up a $10 bottle from New Zealand or South Africa.)  But what I really love about this wine is the boldness and intensity.  When you hold this wine up to the light, you first notice the color. I would place it in the straw category with a little lightness around the rim.  The aroma is really the first thing that grabs a hold of you.  Boldly aromatic and intoxicating, the fragrance invites you in for further review.  The strong herbaceousness is complemented by subtle tropical fruit fragrance and mineral notes.  The flavor explosion that happens in your mouth is almost toe-curling.  The acidity immediately grabs a hold of you, making your mouth want to pucker.  Strong grass, tropical fruit, gooseberry and herbs quickly follow suit to envelop your taste buds in a state of gastronomic euphoria.  The medium-bodied nectar leaves your palate feeling slightly refreshed and wanting more.  This wine is exceptionally quaffable and begs to be drank glass after glass.  Crisp and refreshing, for the money, this wine does one heck of a job!

 Why it works…

There really wasn't a lot of doubt before attempting this pairing. I knew it was going to work on some level and it did.  This pairing had two things going for it.  First, it’s a classic combination.  This means that it has been tried and repeated enough times by many people that there is no disputing its validity.  Second, you have the combination of like versus like.  What this means is that dominant flavors in the wine and the cheese complement each other extremely well.  The acidity in the wine and the acidity in the cheese work so harmoniously together they could be starring in a Garry Marshall movie together.  The acidity in the wine opens up the cheese and brings out some of the cheese's muted herbal and mineral qualities and vice-versa.  Enjoying these specimens together really allows you to dig down and really explore the hidden depths of these gustatory wonders.  The juxtaposition of textures adds an alluring backbone to the tasting and invites you to repeat the process again and again.  Trying different parts of the cheese with the wine really shows off the "living" quality of these products and reminds us that great food is just that – a moving target.  Just like most great experiences in life, each is unique to that timeframe.  Try this tasting a year from now and don't expect the same results.  You will pick up on things you didn't notice during this tasting.  The pairing will be good, but the subtle nuances you've just experienced will be completely different.  For example, the milk collected from the goats could have been goats grazing on the other side of the farm.  This would give the milk a different flavor and, to an experienced caseophile, change the entire tasting.  Overall, I would say this was a strong pairing, but not perfect.  Would I serve this to guests at my house?  The answer is yes.  Do I think there is a better goat cheese/Sauvignon Blanc pairing out there?  The answer to that is also yes.  When I re-explore goat cheese/Sauvignon Blanc pairings in the future, I will keep this in mind and learn from it.

i dont think ive made personal posts about it for a bit but anyway

my cat has been officially diagnosed with kidney failure, and has two very large kidney stones (one in each kidney) that would be hard for even humans to pass through

she’s still being a picky little goofball and not eating certain types of canned food, even though we specifically got a kidney diet to try and help her, plus some pills to acidify her urine more to help shrink the stones

right now she’s only trusting treats we hand feed her or her kibble, and ignoring any wet food (which, before she was at the vets for 3 nights, she was mainly eating wet food and mostly ignoring her kibble)

we have her thyroid meds to give her still, this “chewable” (its huge and has to be turned into powder and added to food) pill thats the acid-urine pill, she has to get Sub-Q fluids from an IV bag twice a week, which joey is going to come over and help with since she’s too squirmy a cat to handle alone for that. she’s also got pain meds she should get every 12 hours... but they only gave us like 5 of them? so we;re basically going as needed / when she seems more grumpy and in pain. it mostly just makes her a little dopey and very sleepy.

so yeah, while the kidney diet is optimal, the most important thing is getting her to eat anything, making sure she still drinks plenty water and uses the catbox regularly / nothing abnormal. she still behaves pretty much the same and its very frustrating that the rest of my family is acting like she’s going to die in a few months, though. i know my cat, i can tell she’s staying strong and not just giving up or anything.

but anyway, yeah. wish us luck with everything if you can. i mostly want her to eat again because we already paid a lot of money for the pills, and if she wont eat them then she really wont get better. but until then, im holding out a lot of hope and belief in Baby.

Hi. So... I'm wondering what your position is on switching vets if you are otherwise happy, but your current vet won't prescribe a long term medication for a persistent issue and instead is insistent that changing the overall atmosphere of the house will fix the issue. To give more detail, my cat was diagnosed with cystitis before I ever owned her, she was on medication for about 6-8 years (I lost track of time in college), during which she only had issues when her medicine was forgotten.(TBC)

There was then a mix up with paperwork at her vet, where they declared her deceased and refused to see her (despite her being in my lap and yowling the entire time I was on the phone with the front desk), so I had to change my vet.  The current vet is insistent that she does not have cystitis and that her bloody, frequent, obviously painful (and out of place) urinations will stop if we make the home environment "less stressful" and that is all.  So I was considering a new vet.

You’re always entitled to see a different vet if you’re unsatisfied about something with your current one, and no vet should be getting defensive about you doing so.

However, your new vet might be correct. I can’t comment on your cat’s medical history or situation, but ‘cystitis’ in cats can come in many forms:

Urinary tract infections, treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories

Crystalluria, treated with prescription diets or urinary acidifiers

Feline Lower urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) or Idiopathic cystitis (IC), which may be treated with diet, anti-inflammatories or with stress reduction.

FLUTD and IC are strange ones because they genuinely do seem to respond to stress reduction or anti-anxiety medication, and cats receiving these treatments have episodes less often.

Now I have n way of knowing what’s going on with your cat, and I can’t give you specific advice, but you are certainly entitled to seek a second opinion.

I use aluminum sulphate, although you can acidify your soil with sulfur, oaks leaves, pine bark and needles, peat moss, and use of an acidified fertilizer, etc. Your local garden center can recommend the best thing to use. If you want to go strictly organic, peat moss is your best bet. Aluminum sulphate is being used for my blueberries. It has done a good job.

heya i think i have given you advice before, So is your rabbit indoors i asume get your rabbit to do its business in its cage you dont really have to have a litter box my aunty did't but here is some advice from someone with a bit more exsperiance in rabbits then me:Rabbits usually take well to litter training, although some flexibility may be required by the owner. Rabbits naturally pick one or more toilet areas, and owners can take advantage of this in litter training. First a suitable litter is needed. You rabbit will probably like to lay in the litter box and may even nibble on the litter, so something absorbent and safe is necessary. Rabbit urine also has a strong odor, so something that absorbs odor is ideal. Do not use clay or clumping litters, or cedar or pine wood shavings. Organic or paper-based pellets and litters are a good choice (brands include Critter Country, Eco-Straw Pellets, Gentle Touch, Cell-Sorb Plus and Yesterday's News - see Top Alternatives to Cedar and Pine Shavings for more options) Some owners simply use rabbit pellets as litter. These are economical and safe, but are not a good choice if your rabbit continually eats extra pellets from the litter box and/or is overweight. For litter pans, cat litter boxes work pretty well, although smaller pans such as cake pans may work for smaller rabbits. If your rabbit tends to back right up to the edge and deposit outside the box, some creativity may be required. A covered cat box is a good option, or a dishpan that has higher sides can work as well (an lower entry can be cut into one side). The larger size of corner litter boxes might work well for smaller rabbits too, as these usually have fairly high backs. If your rabbit tends to tip the pan or kick the litter out, try a heavier litter. To start, confinement and supervision is the key. At first, keep your rabbit primairly in his (or her cage), which should be fairly small at first, with a litter pan. Place a litter box in the cage, and note where you rabbit eliminates. He (she) may start using the box, or may be pick another corner of the cage as a toilet. If this is the case, then move the litter box to the area your rabbit seems to prefer. Flexibility on litter box placement may be necessary both in and out of the cage. Once your rabbit is using the litter pan in the cage, allow the rabbit out of the cage in a limited area. Provide a litter box within this area, and perhaps make it enticing by placing a a treat or favorite toy in the box. Watch your rabbit for signs he is about to urinate or defecate (they usually back up and lift their tail slightly), and try to herd him to the box immediately (if your rabbit is very calm about being picked up it should be okay to place him right in the box). If your rabbit uses the box, give the rabbit a treat (food, toy, petting, or praise) right away. If you notice your rabbit tends to head to one area to do its business, consider putting the box here. Accidents will happen, and punishment has no place in training a rabbit. Your rabbit will absolutely not be able to make a connection with physical punishment and elimitnating outside the litter box. If you catch your rabbit in the act calmly and gently take him or her to the litter box immediately. But, if your don't physically catch your rabbit urinating or defecating, it is too late for your rabbit to make the connection. Just clean up and watch your rabbit a little more closely next time (clean the spot diluted vinegar, or a commercial pet stain/odor remover). The key is to get your rabbit to the box before he goes, so a trip to the litter box every 10 minutes during playtime can be helpful. Over time, your rabbit will probably develop a preference for using the box, and amount of freedom you give your rabbit can be increased. You may need to provide more boxes as you allow your rabbit acces to more space (rabbits may not go far in search of a box so have them handy). Again, if your rabbit repeatedly chooses one place in he room to eliminate, consider putting or moving a litter box there. Try to work with what your rabbit naturally wants to do, but if the location they "choose" is inconvenient, you can try putting a litter box there for a while and then gradually move it to a better spot. Sometimes, placing a bowl of food where you don't want them to go works too. The process sounds daunting, but usually goes pretty smoothly as long as the owner works with the rabbit's natural tendencies and provides undivided attention to the rabbit during it's free time in the beginning. Establishing a routine with your rabbit will also help. Sometimes a previously trained rabbit will get a little careless, and this usually means backtracking and restricting freedom until your rabbit is trained again Hope this helps x

I remember my first garden. The first thing I learned was a lot of respect for farmers and for my mother. Now I have a garden probably a tad smaller than yours. Here in the Northwest, where we get more rain than sun, weeds are a problem. Keep pulling, don't let the weeds get a good start. At one time I thought that being on my hands & knees pulling weeds & mucking in the dirt was good therapy after a day in an office. I still believe that but after I reached senior citizen status my back disagreed with that notion. Next year try mulching with bark or sawdust or leaves (never tried newspaper but I'll try it). DO NOT use pine needles for mulch. Tried that one year and found out that they are highly acidic and my veggies hated it. Try to use little or no chemical bug killers. Liquid fertilizer is a good idea. Soon you will be harvesting and will be really proud of your efforts. Enjoy, there is nothing better than a home grown tomato.

In a past blog post, I described the important role the kidneys play in a cat’s overall health.  In addition to making hormones and regulating the blood pressure, the kidneys filter toxins from the bloodstream, creating urine in the process.  So where does that urine go after it is manufactured by the kidneys? Anyone who’s waited in line for the bathroom at a baseball game knows, it’s the bladder!

The bladder is a muscular organ found in the pelvic region of the abdomen.  Unlike the multitalented kidney, the bladder has one task, and one task only:  to store urine.   Once the bladder reaches a certain degree of distention, nerves in the bladder send a signal to the brain that it’s time to urinate, and the cat trots off to (hopefully) the litter box.

Inflammation of the bladder – cystitis – is one of the most commonly diagnosed feline disorders.   There are several characteristic signs of bladder inflammation in cats:  frequent trips to the litter box (pollakiuria); straining to urinate (stranguria); urinating in inappropriate places (periuria); and presence of blood in the urine (hematuria).  Cats with cystitis may show any or all of the signs described above.

 There are many potential causes of cystitis.  Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common cause.  Female cats, longhaired cats, diabetic cats, and cats with kidney disease are at increased risk for acquiring UTIs.  The formation of crystals in the urine (crystalluria) may lead to cystitis.  The crystals can irritate the delicate bladder lining, resulting in inflammation.  Bladder stones (cystic calculi) are another common cause of cystitis.  Crystals in the urine may coalesce to form a small stone (or multiple stones). The stones usually cause severe irritation to the bladder, and cats often show all of the symptoms described earlier, most notably blood in the urine.  Tumors of the bladder do occur, but thankfully, they are an exceedingly rare cause of cystitis in cats.

Diagnosing the cause of a cat’s cystitis requires a few specific diagnostic tests.  The most basic of these are a urinalysis, urine culture, and an x-ray.  Ideally, the urine should be obtained in a sterile fashion so that a urine culture can be performed at the same time.  Urinalysis allows us to assess the urine for the presence of red blood cells, white blood cells, and crystals.  Sometimes, bacteria are seen microscopically in the urine, confirming a diagnosis of a UTI.  However, if bacteria aren’t identified on a urinalysis, it does not mean that a UTI isn’t present.  Culturing the urine is the gold standard for confirming the presence of a UTI.  Even if bacteria are seen on a urinalysis, a culture should be performed.  A urine culture identifies exactly which bacterial species is causing the infection and which antibiotics would be most effective against it.   An x-ray should be taken to see whether a bladder stone is the cause of the cystitis.  Most bladder stones are radio-opaque, meaning that they will be visible on an x-ray.   

Sometimes, when evaluating a cat with symptoms of cystitis, the x-ray shows no stones, the culture shows no infection, and the urinalysis shows no crystals.  All the urinalysis reveals is the presence of blood.  We call this condition “idiopathic cystitis”, which is a fancy medical way of saying that there is no known cause for the bladder inflammation.  In fact, this is the most common cause of cystitis in cats. 

In the past few years, it has been recognized that idiopathic cystitis in cats closely resembles a type of cystitis commonly seen in women, called interstitial cystitis.  The term “feline interstitial cystitis (FIC)” is now thought to be a more appropriate term than idiopathic cystitis.

The treatment of cystitis is dependent on the cause.  Urinary tract infections are treated with antibiotics.  Crystals in the urine can be controlled or eliminated by feeding prescription diets designed for this purpose.  These diets are restricted in the minerals that comprise the crystals, and they are formulated in a way that results in the urine having a pH between 6.2 and 6.6, which is ideal for preventing crystal formation.  Bladder stones may have to be removed surgically, however, depending on the mineral composition of the stone, it may be possible to dissolve the stone by feeding a severely mineral restricted, highly acidifying prescription diet for a few weeks.

Feline interstitial cystitis is the most common cause of cystitis in cats, and often the most challenging to treat, because no specific cause has been identified.  Over the past decade, however, research at The Ohio State University has revealed that environmental stress often plays a substantial role in the development of FIC in cats.  Indoor cats frequently find themselves without acceptable outlets for their natural instinctive behaviors such as hunting for food, hiding from predators, and scratching.  The stress of this lifestyle can manifest in several ways, such as development of FIC.  The Ohio State University has developed The Indoor Pet Initiative, a program designed to advise pet owners on how to modify and enrich the environment for indoor cats, alleviating many of the stresses that can lead to illnesses like FIC.  As a feline practitioner, I strongly support the sensible suggestions offered.  With stress-related illnesses, preventing the problem from occurring is a much wiser approach then trying to remedy the problem after it becomes established.  For more information on environmental enrichment for indoor cats, visit the Indoor Pet Initiative website at http://ift.tt/2kGCjPn
