Selma Bacha Le Progres Interview (October 17, 2023)

Blah blah standard disclaimers apply; god I HATE invasive behavior so much it genuinely makes my skin crawl; @OL Comms Dept a PSL I beg of you; y'all know the speech by now. I don't want to commit to translating Le Progres articles on a regular basis but as is everything in life, that is subject to change.

In which the prodigal child returns from the cold, remembers Lyon's win/loss record against Barcelona, disses Lyon's men's team, and confesses love and admiration for WoSo's favorite Bad Catholic.

It was basically a fan Q&A and anyone with a Le Progres subscription will be able to find their names; however I took out the fans' names because I just don't feel comfortable outing private information like that. (See, it's that easy to be a decent human being and respect someone's privacy!!! Who would have thought!!!!)

Selma Bacha: "My biggest strength is my instinct"

For one hour, the Olympique Lyonnais and French International left back talked with Le Progres readers with all the spontaneity and frankness we have come to expect from her. Without shying away from a single question. Her tenacious character, the difference in attendance for men's football compared to women's football, the support from her family, how she regards mental strength, her role models, her relationship with Wendie Renard... A Bacha with no filter!

[Fan]: Do you play any other sport apart from rugby?

I do a lot of boxing during preseason and when we're in preseason. It allows me to blow off steam. I also enjoy swimming, and because I'm such a competitor, I always have to swim against someone who swims professionally so I can improve and to improve my mental strength. I also go hiking even if I like it a little less. Ever since I was young, I really loved sports in general. In middle school, I did cross country. I wanted to do my middle school proud so I gave everything, and I finished third in the French Championship.

[Fan]: Did you play with the boys in the academy?

I started playing with the boys when I was five. I was recruited really quickly by Lyon when I was eight. But my parents got divorced at that time and I lived with my father and my brother, so I have certain male characteristics. But maybe that's what gave me my desire to win, the determination, how to be aggressive and not let anything go.

[Fan]: What would you say is the difference between men's football and women's football? The difference in attendance?

We do the same job, but female players don't bring in as much money as the men do. But we're seeing some progress, we see it with the French National Team where we often play in front of sold-out crowds. It's up to us to win over supporters, to make them proud and gain interest in us. I have a lot of confidence in that even if it's a little frustration to play the final of the Coupe de France or the Trophee des Championnes in front of a small crowd. That being said, then a game is at 9pm on a Sunday, I understand that's it is complicated for families.

[Fan]: Were you disappointed not to play the derby [against ASSE] at the Groupama Stadium?

I think I can speak for the team but we would prefer to play in front of a smaller crowd with a great atmosphere, which may have been lost if we played at the Groupama Stadium.

[Fan]: What is your best memory in the Champions League?

My first final in Kiev [Lyon beat Wolfsburg 4-1]. I wasn't even expecting to be on the team sheet and I went to the pregame meeting and I found myself starting at the age of 17. The atmosphere was incredible. Overseas, people are really interested in those types of events. Here in France, we're sleepwalking our way through it, even if after the [2019] World Cup a lot of people started to get more into women's football.

[Fan]: Other countries have overtaken women's football in France. What do you think about that?

It's not to put down our league because things were put in place and we were heard, so respect for that, but when there is a clash like Chelsea-Manchester City in England, it's hard to compete against. Discussions were had, I'm a bit young but Wendie Renard is taking part in them and things are starting to change. In July, professionalism was put in place, so it's moving forward. Slowly but surely.

[Fan]: What has been the most difficult thing in your career?

I integrated the professional group very quickly. I saw everything through rose tinted glasses at first. And when I was on the bench, I was asking the right questions of myself. I was talking with the physical fitness coach, the psychologist, the nutritionist, and I told myself I need to work twice as hard to achieve what I really wanted. I'm someone who is always very smiley and when I'm hurting, no one will know. I can internalize a lot but it will explode, I implode by myself and obviously, that's not good mentally. I have my parents, my team and my best friend, Alyssa Paljevic (former goalkeeper at Lyon), who is a shoulder to lean on. She doesn't judge me and she tells me if I'm wrong or not.

[Fan]: Are you properly supported in terms of mental health?

It depends on each individual. I often tell the youth to make sure to have a good support system. When I arrived at 16 [to the pro group], I wasn't paying a lot of attention to nutrition, to sleep, to recovery, the invisible part of training. I quickly understood you needed support and structure to achieve my objections, which are really high. When I go the [team] psychologist, it's because it helps me a lot mentally.

[Fan]: What qualities do you need to become professional?

Being good at football obviously. Beyond that, only hard work pays off. I give a lot of credit to the people working behind the scenes who put things in place for us. The invisible part of training is also really important. Beyond that, it comes down to having a lot of fun and confidence, you have to follow your instinct. Now it's my turn to ask if you want to be a professional football player? You'd like that? Right there, you can't say "I'd like to". You have to say "I want to" to send the right information to your brain and have confidence in yourself.

[Fan]: Have you stayed in contact with FC Gerland, the team you started with?

I'm the godmother of my former club which is still very dear to me. Last season, I was able to gift them jerseys thanks to my sponsor. Whenever I can go and give them advice, I do it without hesitation.

{Fan]: Do you play Fifa?

From what I'm told, apparently in the game, I'm expensive and a "cheat code"... Personally I don't really play, I prefer to relax.

[Fan]: Do you train in the morning and afternoon like the men's team?

Who told you the men's team train in the morning and afternoon? (laughter) We often have training in the morning, but sometimes we have double or even triple sessions when we come back from vacation. But yeah, we're like the men, we do the same job.

[Fan]: Do you interact with the men's team?

Yes, and besides that, once a year, during the gala for OL Foundation [Lyon charity], we're seated a table with investors and there's obviously a player from the men's team next to us. You might think they have big egos but when you get to know them, they're real softies. We see them in the cafeteria as well.

[Fan]: Was the transition post-Aulas easier for the women's team?

I don't know what's going on on their [men's team] end but from our end, Michele Kang came to see us, we had talks. We're not an easy team to handle but we're not complicated. (laughter)

[Fan]: Which players are your role model?

I'm a footballer but I don't watch a lot of football. The players who inspire, it's Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, because they're hard workers.

[Fan]: Have you recovered from your ankle injury in Australia?

My ankle doesn't bother me anymore otherwise I wouldn't be on the field, especially because I have a long season ahead and therefore we won't want to take any risks. But it's true the sprain was no joke. I had 10 days to recover. It didn't hurt at all during the World Cup even if it was swollen. I'm not a cheat: if I'm not 100 percent it's not worth putting me on the field. So yeah, my ankle is a little unstable since, it'll roll sometimes, I'll be in pain for 30 seconds up to a minute, but that's normal. Let's just say I played my joker. At Lyon there is all the necessary medical staff, I'm in good hands.

[Fan]: Does it help you to play in your hometown?

There are advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is I was born here, all my family is here and I'm really close to my family so I have a lot of support, that really helps me. But sometimes, you just want to be alone and that's not always an option.

[Fan]: What is your relationship like with Wendie [Renard]?

Wendie, she took me immediately under her wing as soon as I integrated the pro group. She knows the love and admiration I have for her. She's in my heart, she's a big sister for me who I can always count on. Our friendship goes beyond football. When things were going badly and I thought about quitting football, she really helped me. I owe an enormous amount to her.

[Fan]: Do you think you will change clubs in the upcoming years?

That's a good question! (laughter) I'm under contract with Lyon until 2025. I have incredibly strong feelings for this club, I grew up with them. For the moment, I'm good here, I live it day by day and for the moment, I'm not imagining myself elsewhere.

[Fan]: You wouldn't want to go to Barcelona?

Why would I choose Barcelona? (laughter) I'm not afraid to test myself in a new league. Each year, in my room, I take a blank piece of paper and write down my objectives. Last season [2021-2022], I wasn't expecting to be be the youngest player in the Champions League, have the most assists, be nominated to the Ballon d'Or... I couldn't believe it. But when you play for the team and you put the team first, the individual stats will follow by themselves.

[Fan]: Do you practice a lot shooting from afar?

Let's just say it's instinct. I have a very strong left foot. The assistant coach for the French National Team teases me a lot about that: he tells me I have a more powerful shot than certain male players but I need to put them on target (laughter), so I know what I have to improve on. I'd say that above all else, my strength, it's my instinct. I always follow it: if I have to take a shot, I'll shoot, if I have to get my teammate to score, I'll do it. I don't think just about me. I'd rather have an assist than score, even if scoring, it's a really special feeling.

[Fan]: Which team has the best style of play in your eyes?

Olympique Lyonnais (laughter). Otherwise I'd say Barcelona, because I am a player who likes ball possession and at the top level, the Spanish players are the best. I like to watch Barcelona.

[Fan]: Who was the best team you played against?

That's a good question. I'd say Chelsea and Barcelona.

[Fan]: And the best player according to you?

There are a lot. At the moment, I'd say Eugenie Le Sommer. Aitana Bonmati (Barcelona) as well, she's really good.

[Fan]: Do you chip in training?

Ball control, nutmeg, shooting, yes. But not really chips.

[Fan]: What is it like being an undisputed starter with the French National Team?

It's an honor! My team knows how much I struggled and all the tears I shed. Compared to other players, I integrated it a little later but I never gave up. There were nights when I was crying at home and I was thinking: "what am I missing?" And one day, when Lyon was at Issy-les-Moulineaux, I learnt that I would be called up because Sakina Karchaoui was injured. At first I couldn't believe it and I was even afraid the coach was pranking me. I screamed really loudly in the bus, everyone was really happy for me. Being at Clairefontaine, seeing the castle, it was a childhood dream. I'll never forget my first game against Kazakhstan, especially because I was a starter. And then I scored in my second game against Wales! I couldn't dream it any better. Now, my status has changed, but I'm not going to get a big head over it. I stay smiley, likable and I never forget where I came from. I want to keep my feet on the ground because it can all change so quickly.

{Fan]: How did you handle coming back from the World Cup?

That night, obviously I didn't sleep. But despite my missed penalty, I told myself that I gave everything and shouldn't have any regrets. Especially because I came into the tournament with an injury and had 10 days to recover from a big sprain. Afterwards? There was a long flight with a lot of sadness and frustration. I landed mid-morning in Lyon, I went to see my family and that afternoon, I went to Montpellier and then the next day to Marrakech. I turned my phone off and no one knew where I was. I needed a lot of time before I could talk about the World Cup.

[Fan]: What was missing for this World Cup?

Efficiency of course. We weren't able to impose our style of play and we were subjected to Australia's. Maybe we lacked a bit of bite as well. Ellie Carpenter, my Australian teammate, when she has one touch of the ball, she moves up 10 meters. When you foul a Brazilian player, they form a group around the referee to put pressure on her. When we had a team meeting about it, Kenza Dali actually called me out by name and said we needed to be more like me, aggressive. Of course you need to respect the referee and not waste energy for no reason when she has already made her decision, but in the quarterfinal of the World Cup, I think we can go talk to the ref. And not just in football. Look at rugby!

Specialist study research

Based in Barcelona, Heura Foods was founded in 2017 by Marc Coloma and Bernat Ananos. Their goal is to take animals out of meat production for good. Focusing on Mediterranean plant-based meat, they note how their product contains the same amount of protein as traditional chicken, with only one-third of the fat. In the build-up to Easter, Heura released a campaign suggesting that Italians should “eat (plant-based) meat this Good Friday”. With Catholics expected to abstain from eating meat, Heura took the opportunity to offer them an alternative so they wouldn’t miss out. This was promoted on the side of trams travelling through Milan. Heura is known for its eye-catching campaigns. In 2020, they put up a giant billboard in the centre of Madrid with the message “a meat burger pollutes more than your car.” The controversy forced the brand to take down the advert, but it’s clear they’re not afraid of bold statements to get people talking. I think this ad campaign is great as it’s very vibrant, striking and bold with a very shocking fact that is displayed in a simple way to make it as impactful as the statement is. It’s educational and a really good example of an effective yet simple ad campaign.

Meatless Farm was founded in 2016 by flexitarian Morten Toft Bech when he was keen to reduce his meat consumption but found there was a lack of tasty plant-based options available. Now, his products are stocked in leading UK supermarkets, and have supplied high street chains such as Pret and Leon. The attention-grabbing slogan was intended for some light-hearted fun and included signs that read “now that’s a M… F… burger” and “we love a big M… F… sausage.” It’s certainly something consumers would remember in their search for meat-free alternatives. I think this is a really fun ad campaign and out of the ordinary, it’s very eye catching as the letters in the slogan make it seem like it’s meant to say something else, so I think it’s fun and a good play on words.

This is a food waste ad campaign by Wrap to encourage people to remember to make a list of items only that they need before they go shopping, to prevent overbuying and then food wastage. I love the design of this poster, I think it’s very engaging and contains really important and shocking statistics like British people wasting 50% of the food that they buy, that’s really terrible and I think this design really gets that point across well with the image of the rotting lemon. The play on words is also really great and I think this is an extremely successful ad campaign.

Oddbox began as a seedling in a market in Portugal. The founders were browsing fresh, beautiful, sometimes funny-looking fruit & veg on offer. It struck them that they only ever saw identical, aesthetically pleasing produce in UK supermarkets. After this, the founders did some digging and learned that up to 40% of all produce in the UK is wasted before it leaves farms because it doesn’t look “right” or because too much was grown - despite being fresh, beautiful, and totally tasty. Oddbox is a subscription box that delivers fresh odd looking fruit and vegetables to your door so that less food goes to waste. I think this is an amazing sustainable business and a perfect example of a company helping to build a more sustainable future for food. This company helped me to think of more ideas for my project about sustainable food.

The Slow Food movement originated in Italy in 1989 as a response to the growth of fast food and other changes in the food system worldwide, of which Our World readers are well aware. After 25 years the movement now boasts millions of members from more than 1,500 ‘convivia’ (local chapters) in more than 150 countries. Members are typically chefs, farmers, fishers, activists, academics and producers — anybody with a passion for food.

Slow Food’s primary missions are to “prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast food and fast life, combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us”. It is evidently a pretty broad quest, but well explained under the more general terminologies of “good, clean and fair”, defined here. This is a really interesting movement that I previously didn’t know about and I think it’s really good and useful. It got me thinking more about movements and ideas that can work to build a more sustainable future for food. Communities using fresh local food is really sustainable and healthy so I think that’s great for the people and also for the environment.

This was a French campaign that tackled food waste by celebrating the beauty of ugly fruits and vegetables, created by Marcel Worldwide. This campaign is so simple but it works really well, this was the first campaign I had seen celebrating ‘ugly’ fruit so it’s shocking to see at first but then makes you realise there is nothing wrong with the food just if it’s shaped differently and out of the ordinary. The art direction works beautifully and makes it look like the fruit is a star in a show and I think it’s a great example of a campaign showing off funny shaped fruit and vegetables.

This is a chart showing the impacts and affects of a community garden that I found in an article on Environmental Evidence titled ‘What are the health and well-being impacts of community gardening for adults and children: a mixed method systematic review protocol’. This website helped me to research more into community gardens as a whole, how they help communities and the positive affects of them. I was thinking of a community garden company being one of my possible ideas for my project so this article helped me with researching more deeply into the history of community gardens and why exactly they’re good. I found scientific evidence to support the idea that community gardens not only help with eating fresh local food but are also amazing for community members social lives, and reduces stress and improves physical health and has many more positive affects.

Another subscription box for selling out of the ordinary looking fruit and vegetables and helping to tackle food waste is ‘Wonkyveg’. Some farmers in the UK have up to 10 tonnes of produce rejected on a weekly basis, solely for the reason that this produce is “ugly.” This is a huge amount of fresh food being wasted which also wastes all the resources that went into growing it, which means a huge amount of water. This website taught me that the average person throws away 77 tomatoes a year and that that’s the equivalent of 10 baths tubs of water! This company is a really good example of tackling food waste and helping to build a more sustainable future for food and I really like how it’s been done. It helped me with thinking of big issues in the food industry and how they can be tackled. I like the design of the background of the website for Wonkyveg, I like the colour green used and think it’s very fitting and I also like the background drawings/doodles of the vegetables, I think it’s very fitting with their brand and is cute. I don’t really think the arrows pointing to the vegetables making out that they are saying these statements like ‘I carrot believe these waste statistics’ and ‘Real veg has curves, baby!’ works well as I find it quite out of place for this type of design but I understand what they were trying to do to promote their boxes.

Stop Food Waste day is the largest single day of action in the fight against food waste. It was started in 2017 by Compass Group USA and is now recognised globally in every corner of the world as we unite to educate and ignite change. This website teaches people to prevent, inspire and repurpose - prevent food waste, inspire others and repurpose food. The website has lots of tools like recipes from around the world, a cookbook and a toolkit on how to get involved and take the Stop Food Waste Day pledge. It’s very interactive, colourful and bold and is a really good and successful website and day of action. This made me think of other ways in which food issues could be tackled and how the public could be inspired to get involved and help out.

I read an article titled ‘ 16 Facts That Show How Going Vegan Helps Stop Climate Change ‘ on the Peta UK website. I researched more into a vegan diet as I know that eating meat is a really huge problem in climate change, and I wanted to learn more about this in hopes of it helping me come to a solution to help build a more sustainable future for food. I learnt so many interesting facts and statistics about how being vegan helps the environment from this website, for example raising animals for flesh, eggs and dairy causes 65% of all nitrous-oxide emissions and that nitrous oxide has 296 times the global-warming potential of carbon dioxide. I also learnt that animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. These statistics really shocked me massively and taught me a lot about the environment, being vegan and how this stops climate change.

I read an article from this website, Atalian Servest, titled ‘Four benefits of using fresh, in season and local food’. I researched into the benefits of this as I realised I did not know that much about local food, what’s in season at which times and the positive affects this can have. I wanted to learn more about this to incorporate it into my project because I decided I wanted to do it on encouraging people to eat more fresh and local food. I learnt that it’s so much better for your health, the flavour will always be better and that it reduces your carbon footprint. There were a lot more benefits than I thought to eating fresh local food and it was very interesting and helpful to learn about.

I read a website page by Vegetarian Society titled ‘Seasonal UK grown produce’ which names different fruit and vegetables that are fresh and grown in each month of the year, this was really useful and helpful to me to learn what grows in UK throughout the months of the years as I needed to know to help me progress with my project. I thought there wouldn’t be that many options of fruit and vegetables that are just grown in the UK, I thought the choices would be really limited but there is always still a big variety no matter which month, and I think it’s important for everyone to know this so they can contribute to eating more fresh locally grown food and lowering their carbon footprint by eating less food which has been imported all around the world, frozen and preserved with unnatural chemicals. There are so many benefits to eating locally produced food and hopefully I am able to produce a clear and informative design that teaches people more about it.

This ‘Know your food’ campaign was created by Julia Mia Design for the Australian conservation foundation as a proposal for their biodiversity urban nature strategy. I love the bright bold colours used and I think this advert is very eye catching and makes me want to look into what the campaign is about. I think the design is very in your face, and that they all work together.

Since the sudden passing of my paternal grandmother and my maternal grandfather last year, I’ve tried to turn my grief into fuel to finally start on the (surprisingly) overwhelming process of completing a family tree and a family history. Gathering pictures, piecing documents together, and gathering stories from my parents. It is by no means finished. I only have a few boxes of things (if anyone wants to donate a ancestry subscription...🥺) and free online sources but I wanted to share some of my findings: Picture 1. This is my paternal great-great-great grandmother Millie Hammel. This is a cabinet card from 1890. She married James W Esplen, my greatx3 grandfather and the son of John B Esplen, of which the neighborhood Esplen (picture 2) was named after. John was born in Scotland in the early 1800s. I found the original deeds for a house in the west end that went through three generations of the Esplen side of my family. Built in 1900. Bought in 1922. Pic 3. This is my paternal great grandmother Marie Watts. This is her with my grandfather and his siblings. 1940s. They lived in Latrobe. She married John McGuire. I haven’t finished the McGuire line but it may go back into the 1700s. His line is Irish. Picture 4: my maternal grandfather (Charles Stanett) in 9th grade at North Catholic High-school (he is number 3 down in the first column). He later would graduate from Duquesne university. He was 4th generation German American. Picture 5: lastly, this is two pictures of my maternal great grandparents. Charles Stanett and Anna In the 1940s and in the 90s. She was first generation Lithuanian-American. I’m honestly so shocked about what I’ve found so far, because I never knew these people. I grew up with some mentions of them but never seen a picture or got tangible evidence they were real. It It also really hit me just how much of my history is in Pittsburgh. Everyone I mentioned here went straight to this city when they immigrated. They’ve seen it all happen here. I never cared too much about local history until I started on this project. occupation: english major- honestly, red is only attending the community college for brownie points, and to be where almost everyone else (and, of course, for the parties). taking english as a major seemed like the easiest alternative to other degree programs. she is not currently employed, though is looking at possible work study opportunities.

PERSONALITY:

Confrontational / Hard-headed

Red isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if it might damage her relationships or cause an argument. Sometimes, her confrontational streak is a good thing, is allows her to assert herself in certain situations, but on the flip side, it can also lead to her appearing cold or uncaring towards others. Fortunately, this is often offset by her ability to be compassionate as well- she truly does care about other people, she is simply blunt and refuses to mince words.

Insecure

Red is always the first person to admit that her confidence is shaky at best. Compared to her peers, she often feels untalented, even if she’s loathe to admit it. She places an extraordinary amount of her self-worth on what other’s think of her, which explains her tendency to party, and her social butterfly persona. The thing that makes her the most uncomfortable in the world is being alone, or feeling looked over, and these emotions can manifest in a variety of ways- most notably through anger, jealousy, or sadness, with the latter most being the most prominent.

Courageous / Reckless

Red is always the first one to jump to a challenge, willing to delve into potentially dangerous situations for the thrill. She gets bored if she cannot try new things, and often butts heads with people who are cowardly. While popularity is important to Red, at the same time she’s not unwilling to go outside the box and try something new, so long as she doesn’t think it’ll affect her social status. Her courageous can sometimes feed into recklessness and bad decision making, but as they say- bad choices make good stories.

Party Animal

Red loves to have a good time, and in college, even a shitty South Park community one, it’s a breeding ground for good times. She’s quick to organize parties on the weekend, quick to provide any recreational substances, and also -occasionally- quick to be the first one to pass out on the couch. To her, there’s nothing better than being around good friends with good food and drinks and listening to hit music blaring over the speakers (especially if it’s Justin Timberlake, but she’ll compromise). Her academics suffer because of her interest in partying and other recreational activities.

Music-Lover

Spotify Premium? Check. Apple Music? Check. Pandora Premium? Check. Even Youtube Red? Of course! It even has her name in it. Just about any service out there that offers a music subscription, Red has. More often than not she’s seen with headphones, and she collects records. Her music tends to be pop and contemporary, but she has a few playlists of the classics as well. It’s well known that her favorite singer is Justin Timberlake, for reasons more that just his music, but she’s broadened her horizons the older she got. Still, he remains a childhood favorite.

BIO:

Red graduated at about mid-tier of her class, not too low but not too high either. She was proud of herself regardless though, and so was her father, and that was all that really mattered. Graduation was a time of glory for everyone, and surprisingly, everyone made it. If you asked her in fourth grade if she thought she’d be graduating with all her then-current peers, her answer would’ve been a resounding no.

However, Red was comfortable in South Park. She was relatively popular, comfortable in her position, had many good friends- sure, there weren’t a whole lot of opportunities, but what did she want to do with her life anyway? The kind of pressure that filled her with made her anxious, and when the government regulations began to roll in and the school she applied to a few states away gave her a rejection letter, it was bittersweet. On one hand she was going to miss out on the possibilities awaiting her- a new town, a new image for herself, new friends even. Life had so much more to offer that wasn’t just South Park. But, at the same time, staying in her hometown was undeniably comfortable. Sure, there weren’t a lot of opportunities, but she had good friends and she knew everyone and didn’t have to fear social rejection or not fitting in somewhere else.

South Park Community College became heavily populated with her peers, which made the transition easy- and even though it was still in South Park, living on her own in the dormitories and becoming largely independent for the first time in her life was still exciting. And, of course, all the extra-curricular opportunities college had to offer she was quick to dip her toe into. She never much questioned the government cracking down on their town, weirder things have happened after all.

HEADCANONS:

can always be seen with headphones on, or around her neck if they’re the wired kind. but of course she has airpods

she loves to dance, and while has never taken formal lessons, she’s gotten quite good over the years. she doesn’t usually dance sober (in public anyway)

she also loves to sing, but she’s not very good at it

while she’s technically roman-catholic, she doesn’t go to church regularly, and doesn’t think much about religion

however, she’s very interested in the darker side of spirituality, and is fascinated with spirit boards, tarot cards, palm reading, and all matters of mysticism. unfortunately, a lot of people find this lame, so she keeps the hobby to herself

Irreplaceable you pt 1

Sam x reader

Summary- inspired by the movie irreplaceable you. Sickness/cancer and a lot of emotions. Definitely grab a box of tissues.

You: "What if we stayed in bed all day?"

" That sounds like the best day ever. We should stay here all week."

You: "What if we got bored?"

"Us, bored? When have we ever been bored?"

" What if we got hungry? What would we do for food?

Sam: "Well, we could order takeout and have it delivered right there."

"you know dean would come in and make us get up."

Sam laughs "Stop. Stop worrying."

Full disclosure:

I didn't have to worry about any of that, because this is where my story ends. So does yours, by the way. So does everyone's.

It's okay. Really.

Most of it I don't miss at all.

One with nature.

Really.

Calm. Peaceful.

But then, there's Sam.

Sam was... is the love of my life.

Sams walking to your grave. You narratoring: " Hi, Sam."

Sam by your grave: "Hi, y/n."

But let's start at the beginning.

Even with being a hunter, you were so excited. You were late for your period, it had been a couple weeks late. Now it felt like you were bloated like maybe a baby bump showing.

"Sam?"

"Hey what's up ?" He answers as you walk into the library.

"I kind of have some good news." Siting down next to him.

"oh yeah what's that ?"

You smile big "well... we need to make a doctors appointment. Because... I think I'm pregnant. I haven't had my period for about two months."

His turn to smile real big "really????" You nod.

"This so great, I'm gonna be a dad.!" He hugs you and kissed your forehead then nose and then lips. "And I'm gonna be a mom."

You set up your doctors appointment for about a week later. You were getting some stomach pains. You got up to throw away your wrapper when:. "ah ouchhh".

'Why does this hurt so much.' you thought.

You were waiting for the doctor to come back and confirm your good news !

There's a big picture of a baby inside of a belly showing the insides and sam says

"that picture makes it look gross and painful."

"that's not helpful!" The doctor comes in:

"I'm so sorry to keep you waiting."

"Um, y/n, I have some difficult news. The blood test shows that you are not pregnant.

Oh. Sam grabs ahold of your hands and squeezes them.

" Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Oh, okay." It felt like someone just ripped your heart out but you couldn't believe it. Sam started rubbing your arms and hands.

"I guess that's okay. I- I mean, the whole thing was kind of a surprise... Yeah. We probably weren't even ready."

" Right-"

"It-it-it's just.. its weird 'cause, um, I know it's super early but I really feel something there." You say.

"The sonogram shows that you have a mass in your pelvis roughly the size of a tangerine. It can mimic pregnancy."

"A mass?"

"What kind of a mass?" Sam asks. He looked pretty discouraged to.

[Dr. Michaelson] "I don't want you guys to panic, because it couldbe nothing."

There's this moment

when everything changes.

You look back, and there was the moment before.

See that person?

Flashback to a few minutes -

"It's not helpful!"

She's thinking about whether she's hoping for a boy or a girl, and tiny fingers and toes, and then...

[Dr. Michaelson] "I'm so sorry to keep you waiting."

[you] and now Suddenly...

End of flashback

You and Sam were laying down in bed:

"At least we won't have to pay for college." You say.

"Unless it's a really smart tumor... Too soon?" He says.

You sigh "It's too soon."

"A tangerine is better than an orange." You say.

"Or a grapefruit."

"Right. Or, um... What's bigger than a grapefruit?"

both of you say "A watermelon."

Cas can't heal you because he's human so there is really no other option.

.... At the doctors again .....

Did I say that was the moment?

[Dr. Kessler] "It's two tangerines and a grapefruit."

Correction, this is the moment.

"That's a lot of fruit."

[Dr. Kessler] "Uh, the tests have shown that it is cancer. And I know how hard this must be to hear. It's incredibly rare in someone your age. It's just... It's just terrible luck. Now we can talk aboutoptions whenever you're ready."

"Is there one that doesn't involve dying?" You ask.

[Dr. Kessler] "Uh, I-I've already consulted with a colleague, and after the initialsurgery, there's a clinical trial I'd like to enroll you in"

"You didn't answer my question."

Did he answer my question?

[Dr. Kessler] "We don't like to make predictions. But in addition to your treatment, I want to talk to you about your quality of life. Uh, we can help with pain management and some palliative care. And also some people have found great solace from supportgroups. I know this is a terribleshock, but let's take it one day at a time."

You knew you would go out one day probably hunting, but not like this. Not cancer.

"hello yes I would like to cancel my subscription to you guys."

"oh why is that?"

"I just have cancer now so I figured I wouldn't really be exercising."

"oh that's terrible. Are you sure you want to cancel?"

"yes . ... I am."

~~~~~ later that night ~~~~~~

Sam: "how you feeling?"

"I'm scared."

"It's-It's gonna be okay."

"What if I die?"

"We're gonna fight this, I'll always be there for you"

Your laying on the floor because They say after surgery there's gonna be some minor discomfort.

It's Stage IV cancer.

Nothing is minor.

Nothing is comfortable.

Your doctor talking :

"So, let's, um, let's take another look at the proposed model for auto-associative memory and its constituent neural network."

'Or not. Let's not and say we did. Class dismissed.' you think.

you're walking to the other clinic and the guy greets me. "Hey."

"Hi."

"How's it going? I'm Dominic."

"y/n, Nice to meet you."

"I'm gonna be running your treatment suite."

"Treatment suite? "

"Oh, yeah, don't get excited. It doesn't even have four walls. Uh, go ahead and grab a seat right there. For the next time, you're probably gonna want to bring your own pillow in from home. You're also gonna need your cell phone with headphones and grab a magazine. Some of these guys tend to hoard 'em. You're gonna end up reading an old ripped up copy of Duck Enthusiast.

"Oh. It's okay, I don't read Duck Enthusiast. "

"Yeah, well, you will. All right, feet up. " he says.

"Uh, yes, you will feel like shit after this, but it's different for everybody. And no, your hair isn't gonna fall out right away. And besides, it looks like you have plenty of it, so you're doing good. Uh, and if you need snacks, you got to bring them from home."

Great. Just great.

You walk into one of the support groups.

"Hey."

"Come on in. We're just getting started. " the girl says. "Go grab yourself a hook and yarn."

One of the people in the group start saying "have you heard of Catholic yoga? It's a full Latin Mass with vinyasa yoga positions, and I come out... "

"You serious? " someone asks. "yeah!"

"How is Estelle holding up?"

"She's good. There's a new hawk in Central Park. Every morning we go out there and watch the little guy. I hope she keeps up the bird-watching after I'm gone. With whatever new guy she's banging.

[laughs]

"Welcome to group." they all say. "It's the way we roll."

" We have fun. "

"Cool." you say. The end of session finishes up and you start walking away when the guy who was talking about the bird calls to you.:

"The whole point is to mingle. "

"Not feeling up to it. " you say.

"Neither does anybody. That's why we do it. Myron. Multiple myeloma. You've never heard of it? Stay a while. " he says.

"I'm not really a mingler. "

"Not a crocheter either, apparently. "

"Didn't have time for pointless hobbies then, really don't have time for them now, and I'm especially uninterested in discovering that crocheting is a metaphor for healing or whatever."

"What you're feeling is totally normal." Myron says.

"You know, I wish people would stop telling me that totally insane things are normal."

"Have you looked around? "

"But you just accept that? You just accept everything that's going on? You make jokes about your wife having a new boyfriend?"

"I don't accept it, but in the event that I do kick the bucket, I hope she does find a boyfriend. Somebody nice. Less well-endowed to be sure, but nice. "

"Well, I just think I am in a different situation. Sam and I met when we were kids, and then started dating 10 years ago."

"How old is he? "

" Thirty-five."

"Yeah, he's gonna go through a major slut phase."

You laugh.

"I also have Tourette's."

You- "Good to know."

"Yeah. You come back."

"Nice to meet you, Myron."

"Nice to meet you, y/n."

"And thanks for the advice. "

" All right"

"Are you gonna go through a slut phase?" You ask Sam.

"What? No. Why would you say that?"

"You're not even thinking about it?"

"That's the absolute furthest thing from my mind right now. It's further than like meeting someone on Tinder." You chuckle.

"Okay, but Tinder can't be that far from your mind because you just said it, which means you had to be thinking about it, which means you're thinking about this too."

"Yeah. I'm busted." Sam says.

"I'm serious. Look at you. The puppy-dog eyes.

"What?"

" This is a disaster. "

Sam: "What are you talking about?"

"You don't know. Because you have no experience. Women are gonna eat you alive."

" I can take care of myself."

"I know But what if you can't? Who's going to get you to go to bed and stop researching? Who's going to make you real food?"

"you don't make me real food."

"Yeah, but I would, hypothetically. "

"Well, our hypothetical food has been in the freezer for like a year." You got up and started near the kitchen.

"What are you doing?"

"Figuring out how to cook a real meal."

"Now?"

"No time like the present."

"How do I cook a chicken?" You say into the phone.

[Siri] Let me think about that.

You laugh.

"Using a sundae model as a sexual proposition. It is confusing. I have to s... " Myron says.

"Probably a busted hymen." You giggle.

"I... I, um... mine broke on a horse. And me, I was born without one. So... It was my favorite horse, though. " ......

I thought you were crazy, but then I thought about it more, and he's gonna be a chick magnet. he already is And the worst part is, he's gonna have no idea how to handle it because he's going to be too sad. He hasn't dated to many people in his life. He's gonna be lonely and vulnerable. He already lost his fiance."

"Classic rookie mistake. " Myron states.

"What are you talking about? "

"Thinking you can do something to lessen the loss. There's a word for what you're doing. It's a technical term. You want to know it?"

You: "No, thanks."

"Anticipatory grieving.' Trying to cope with the loss before it happens. So, Meryl over there writes a birthday card to her husband for every year she's gonna be gone, and Jim... makes a video montage of himself as Santa for all the Christmases he's gonna miss with his kids. It doesn't change anything. Look, what do I know? My advice? You're hooking him up, concentrate on a booty. Yours, you know, it's... it's flat."

You laugh "My booty is not flat."

"You have a terrible ass. "

"Fuck you."

"Here, give me that. Oh, you got a match. Sexypants89."

"Okay, let me see that."

Blind Date Chapter 9 (end)

“So you're sure you want to do this?” Foggy asked Matt as they wandered the streets. “I mean before you were just staying with (y/n) while you were healing… Don't get me wrong, fully endorse this plan. Just want to know if you're sure.”

“I'm sure Foggy.” Matt assured him as they entered a small jewelry store. “We've already started moving her things into my place.”

“Your place? What's wrong with hers? I mean, half your stuff is already there.” Foggy asked as he glanced over the merchandise.

“My rent is cheaper and my kitchen is bigger.” He answered matter of factly. “Now help me pick out a ring.”

“And what makes you think I'm qualified to for this? You're putting alot of pressure on me Murdock.” Foggy joked. “Doesn't this fall under Karen's job description?”

“Karen's job is to keep (y/n) busy and to help me find the right time.” Matt corrected.

“It's just that this is the third jewelry shop we've been to. Are you sure you want this?” Foggy asked scanning the rings.

“Haven't been more sure of anything. We just haven't found the right one yet.”

You stood in the bitter winter air surrounded by strangers in the middle of time square hugging yourself for warmth. In the skyline of the city Avengers tower shone like a beacon of hope, bringing comfort to all who gazed upon it covered in snow as the world waited for the countdown to the new year to begin. But not you. Not after all you've been through, and not tonight. It was only yesterday Claire gave Matt the ok to go back out. Only just this morning he received a new armored suit from his friend. And only a few hours ago he promised you would be safe in the crowd while he went after the kingpin. But what about him?

As he left the apartment earlier that day still cluttered by your boxes from moving in he promised you would be safe and that he would meet you in the crowd for a midnight kiss… But as snow speckled your coat and knit cap your mind began to wander over the what ifs. What if he cant find you? What if he gets hurt? What if Fisk kills him?

“Don't worry he'll be here.” Karen said comfortingly as she watched the worry in your face grow. “I'm sure he's fine.” You nodded but you knew in your core somewhere out there he was up against a dangerous man who surrounded himself with the worst of the worst.

“God in Heaven I hope so.” You sighed. Karen pulled you into a comforting hug. Never before had she heard you reference specifically the Christian God...Matt's God...deep down she knew what exactly that meant. That you were so worried for him you were willing to turn to his God for help.

The ball lit up casting its glow on the streets below. While all crowd filled with joy marveling at the light your eyes wandered the rooftops, searching for your own symbol of hope to return.

“Oh god Karen what if he's hurt?” You sobbed as you turned to another rooftop.

“I'm sure he just got held up.” Karen assured you, watching your eyes dart around. “He's got his suit remember?”

“But what if it didn't work?” Your eyes darted from roof to roof with panic. “What if he's out there somewhere bleeding what if he's-”

A strong gloved hand wrapped around your wrist jerking you around as another dove into your hair under the hat pulling your gaze from the rooftops to the red horned helmet pulling your lips to his as all of Time Square shouted HAPPY NEW YEAR.

“You're late and you had me worried.” You scolded as you stroked the sides of the helmet looking into the covered eyes, thanking every deity you could think of that he was safe.

“Right time.” Karen whispered under her breath, low enough only Matt could hear.

“I'll make it up to you at home...but I have to go now if I want even a hope of getting Fisk.” He assured you before planting reassuring lips on your forehead.

“Go. Be a hero.” You said with a nod. As Matt ran off he could tell deep down you were terrified for him. He knew you would be up with worry as the city celebrated the beginning of a new year. But as he ran he could hear you whisper in the crowd “I couldn't be more proud of you. But if you don't come home alive I'm going to be so pissed.”

Once you were home you began unpacking your boxes. As you moved around the kitchen, your kitchen, finding spots for your pots and pans you turned to find a horned silhouette against the neon of the sign outside causing you to nearly jump out of your skin. “Oh god you scared the shit out of me!” You breathed as Matt listened to your heart race.

“I know. I'm sorry. I didn't get him.” As the lights in the sign moved painting the apartment in dancing color you realized he was holding something small, cradling it with both hands. “But I promise I will always come home to you. I don't care if I have to drag myself in with every broken bone in my body as long as it keeps you safe.” The light hit it just right to make a small stone glisten. “When we met I was in such a dark place. But you… you were an angel guiding me every step of the way. I thought I forgot what happiness was until you came along and I never want to let that go.” He paused holding the small simple elegant ring up. He smiled as he listened to you dropping the cake pan you had been holding as your heart skip several beats as the light fell on the ring. “I want to come home every night to a messy kitchen and an alter to gods whose names I can't pronounce in the corner or in the middle of the living room or wherever you want it to go. (Y/n),” he bent down on one knee, “will you marry me?”

He held his breath as you stood there catching yours before nodding softly, dashing to him as he stood to catch you in his arms in till your lips collided in a passionate rush. He lifted you in his strong arms carrying you to to bed, slipping the ring on your finger before removing the gloves. You watched as pieces of the suit fell to the floor, scars and muscles slowly revealing themselves as he shed the armor before finally reaching for the helmet. “Wait...leave it on?” You asked with a sultry grin.

He smirked under the half mask his covered eyes falling on you, smelling the scent of sweet vanilla Buttercream from your bakery mixing with your juices telling him everything about what you had in mind as he moved to the bed.

The ceremony was a simple one. A small hand-fasting in the spring followed by a Catholic ceremony held by Father Lantom. Each filled with its own traditions, each beautiful in their own way.

One year later Matt came home from a long night of hunting hunting down Fisk and Bullseye, removing the gloves and masks before moving into the bedroom gazing sightlessly on the two things in the city that kept him fighting. You sat on the bed rocking your small swaddled sleeping boy singing a soft lullaby. And as he took you both in a satisfied smile and a rush of bliss came over him. “Hey there Mrs. Murdock. How's little Jack doing?” He asked quietly already knowing the answer as he listened to his son sleeping.
