Convention Artist Alley Review: SacAnime (Summer)
Tumblr media
Convention: Sacanime (Summer)
Location: Sacramento, CA
Date: September 2-4
Table cost: $200
Table size: 8’
Application: Juried/Lottery
Fandom/audience: Anime
Items for sale: 11x17" posters (fanart and original), zines (fanart and original), comics, pins (original), resin coasters and jewelry  (including primogems), leather keychains (by my sister)
Mask policy: Not required
Previously attended? Yes, several times
Pros: Visiting friends in California, inexpensive badge cost for attendees, big-name guests, AIR CONDITIONING! (It was 110 that weekend!)
Cons: Have to fly, huge vendor hall/artist alley
Most popular item(s): Posters (111); resin jewelry (53!)
Least popular item(s): Commissions (0)
Once again I flew “light,” reducing my stock to meet Southwest’s weight limits. I was apprehensive about the show since I had done so poorly at CRX, wondering if my work was only popular in the midwest.
I hadn’t been to Sacanime since before I left CA, and it was weird being in a building that was half what I remembered but half not (they had remodeled recently and torn down some parts of the building). The vendor hall/artist alley is huge, spanning all of the available ground floor hall space, but it was also PACKED all weekend - we were lucky to be near a restroom so we didn’t have to push through the crowd, though the one time I did get up and browse I was stuck walking at a crawl the whole time.  Between the inexpensive attendance cost, family-friendly atmosphere, and heat wave outside, I think a lot of people were desperate for something inside to do, which really worked in our favor.
I was definitely glad I had help as the sales were almost constant. I wish I had more time to get around and see other artists (as many I had never seen before and wanted to buy things from) but really I can’t complain about just how amazing the show was. Even in the far corner we had tons of traffic flow!
Gross sales: ~$4000

As promised, here are the better photos from Causeacon of my Leia cosplay. It was really fun getting the chance to work with a professional photographer.

Now that #causeacon is over I’m uploading a bunch of things I made in preparation for it to #etsy. (Should be up within the next week unless something comes up) One of those being these adorable umbrella necklaces. They were another experiment but I loved them so much that I’m totally going to make more. I have four, all unique, each will be $10 on etsy+shipping As a small reminder I’m always open to doing custom orders (similar to things I already have) just shoot me a message :)

Convention Artist Alley Review: Otakon
Tumblr media
Convention: Otakon
Location: Washington DC
Date: July 29-31
Table cost: $325
Table size: 6’
Application: Lottery
Fandom/audience: Anime
Items for sale: 11x17" posters (fanart and original), coloring book, comics, pins (original), resin coasters and jewelry  (including primogems), leather keychains (by my sister)
Mask policy: Required in all areas
New items/display: between a 6’ table and flying, I did not bring many items (zines, postcards, limited stock of other items)
Previously attended? Yes, but it has been many years (2013?)
Pros: HUGE convention with a very large audience
Cons: expensive, very hard to get into, in an expensive area (DC)
Most popular item(s): Posters (129)
Least popular item(s): Commissions (0)
Otakon is an adventure, no matter how you play it. The con has been going since forever, so it is well organized and tends to run smoothly. They send out information generally well ahead of time, allowing me to be prepared.
I had originally intended to drive (about a 9 hour drive) and my mom had made noises about wanting to come along and see DC.  However, she apparently wasn’t serious.  Two days prior the venue decided they were going to charge $150 per use of the loading docks (and you otherwise had to “hand carry” in items, meaning no folding wagon like I usually use), so I just for fun looked at flights, and I could get a southwest flight there for under $400. Considering the time saved plus I wouldn’t have to deal with loading docks or traffic or parking, I decided to fly.  Between now having to fly and the smaller table, as well as limited stock from the past 3 shows, I did not bring all of my items (no zines, ran out of SONS on day 1)
In other fun times, I dropped my phone and shattered it, so I had to buy a temporary phone for a few days to run credit card sales.
I haven’t attended Otakon since it’s been in Baltimore, and this was a completely different show.  The artist alley and art show were in a separate room from vendors, but also had longer hours to encourage more attendance.  The unlimited ($1000 with no fanart restrictions) tables were in the front of the alley, followed by the standard tables ($300 lottery system, 50/50 fanart and original required).  There was plenty of room around each table, including a 2’ space between tables, which really helped with walking around the alley and being able to see each person’s wares.
Gross sales: ~$4000
Recommend/will attend again? It might even be worth it to buy those unlimited tables!

My Leia cosplay from the Causeacon 2019 cosplay contest. I won third place in the inexperienced category! I’m super happy with myself I’ve entered some contests in the past but I’ve never placed at all before.
(Also, I know these photos aren't the best but I should get some better ones in the future hopefully soon-ish.)
