A pair of dull, red eyes stare at the ruined remains of a home she once considered a safe haven. The front door has been blown clean off, the walls now rumbled remains in the grass, terracotta spilling into the water below. Part of the ceiling has been torn away, singed from the blast of the End Crystal. Their chests are damaged, items spilling onto the floor. And the floorboards are burned or have been blown up into pieces.
Looking at the remains of their home, Minnie’s heart is in her throat. Her eyes fill with tears, and grief settles in her chest. She clenches her fists as she stands on the edge of the pond, standing right at her grave, the place she loved and lost. The place where she screamed to see her partner until her throat went raw and TNT rained down on her head.
She can still see the crater in the sand.
Fresh tears well up in her eyes and she sniffles.
“I figured I’d find you here,” a voice says behind her, and Minnie whirls around. Behind her is her partner, her love, her life. And Cerenci looks at her, lips quirking up in a little smile when she notices that she has Minnie’s attention. “Hello, darling.”
The moment her eyes meet Cerenci’s soft magenta ones, she breaks.
A sob rips itself from her throat, and she’s throwing herself at the other. She wraps her arms tight around her partner, the tears rolling down her cheeks. “I’m sorry!” she cries out, “Cerenci I-I’m so sorry!”
“Min–”
Without giving Cerenci a chance to speak or even return her hug, Minnie pulls herself back and grips her by the shoulders, her fingers desperate as they cling to her. “I didn’t know!” she exclaims quickly, “I-I didn’t know they were going to do that, I didn’t want you to die! Not like that!” She stares at Cerenci’s eyes, her own wide and frantic and pained as her lips wobble and her body shakes from her cries. “I swear to you, Cerenci, I didn’t know!”
“I know, I trust you.” Cerenci’s voice breaks through Minnie’s tears, lifting a hand to wipe away some of Minnie’s tears. Her fingers move to brush a few stray strands of hair behind Minnie’s ear, the action gentle and comforting. “Don’t worry.”
Even with Cerenci’s hand in her hair, Minnie shakes her head, “No, no I am going to worry!” She sniffles loudly, shoulders still trembling. “I killed you! I-I had been trying so hard to ignore it, to deny those damn voices in my head and the bloodlust.” Her voice breaks as she speaks.
The moment replays in her mind, it has been replaying in her mind. Along with her final death. The rush of adrenaline. The weight of her axe in her hands. Cerenci’s voice echoing in her ears, “Are we doing this right now?!” She hadn’t expected to win. She was ready to die, but at least it would have been to the hands of her love. But she did. She killed Cerenci. And she hates the way that she could feel her blood croon and sing in pleasure. The way that the voices in her head cheered at the betrayal and she herself laughed.
The guilt had been immediate. A hollow feeling had settled over her, wrapping her in a thick blanket of remorse. Everything from that point on felt muffled, and she never quite got the taste of copper out of her mouth.
The realization of what she had done was enough to break her from the fog in her mind, but not quite. Even as she stood beside Cerenci, after apologizing and giving her those flowers and arrows, the ghosts had only demanded more from her. They screamed at her, wanting blood and a second betrayal and Minnie just didn’t have it in her. Not again. All she wanted was to collapse against Cerenci and hold her and cry until there were no tears left.
“You’re forgiven,” Cerenci says, her hand moving back down to Minnie’s cheek. She cups it, fingers kind and loving.
It makes Minnie’s heart break, and she feels like wailing. “You should’ve betrayed me,” she croaks.
“Oh, love.” Cerenci’s voice is gentle as she looks at Minnie, her gaze soft but empathetic. “Look at me, Minnie,” she commands firmly but still kind in the way she speaks. Raising her other hand, Cerenci holds Minnie’s face in her hands, “I spared you because of love and because it was worth lasting with you. Betraying you wasn’t on the table.”
What neither of them say is that it was expected. Minnie’s betrayal was something they both saw coming the moment she turned red. Even if they joked about it, and even if Minnie asked Cerenci to join her, they knew it would happen.
One can only ignore the voices for so long.
Minnie sniffles, whining in her throat as she stares at Cerenci’s loving expression before tucking her face into the crook of her neck. She wraps her arms around Cerenci, and it is relieving to finally hug her without the urge to stab her in the back. To hug her without blood rushing in her ears, to finally be rid of the taste of copper.
When she feels Cerenci press a kiss to her hair and arms snake around her, Minnie squeezes her eyes shut tightly and sinks into her embrace.
They stand there like that for who knows how long, no longer working with the ever present fear of turning the corner and meeting the end of someone’s weapon: enemy or ally. They stand there in each other’s arms, letting their hearts begin to heal without the fear of dying.
“‘Renci?” Minnie speaks up, not moving her head.
“Hmmm?” Cerenci hums, dragging her fingers up and down Minnie’s spine.
Lifting her head up to look at her partner, Minnie takes a soft breath. “Can we go home now?” she asks, something pleading.
Cerenci’s gaze softens, briefly flickering over to their ruined home before looking back at Minnie, and she nods. “Of course, hon.”
Separating, Minnie takes Cerenci’s hand in her own, and the two of them turn toward their home. It may be ruined, but it is theirs. They built it and made it their own, and it is a place of love. It is their final resting place.
And on the ground where they once stood, sitting on top of the grass, is a golden feather and a torn, blood covered bow. They are together.
