Quella che si sta impetuosamente sviluppando è una divisione del lavoro, non più tra lavoratori specializzati nelle varie funzioni o tra Paesi con differenti vantaggi comparati, bensì tra umani e sistemi di Ia, almeno fintanto che i primi esprimeranno una creatività più eccentrica, originale, stravagante e sofisticata dei secondi Immaginiamo che Guglielmo Marconi avesse avuto a disposizione un sistema di Intelligenza Artificiale del tipo ChatGPT che avesse inglobato tutte le conoscenze scientifiche accumulate fino al 1895. Se lo avesse interrogato sulla possibilità di inviare e ricevere segnali attraverso l’etere con onde elettromagnetiche, quasi sicuramente il responso sarebbe stato negativo. Analogamente se i fratelli Wright avessero avuto a disposizione ChatGPT “allenato” su tutto lo scibile umano fino al 1903 e avessero verificato preliminarmente le loro intuizioni sulla possibilità di costruire una macchina volante più pesante dell’aria sarebbero stati perentoriamente dissuasi. Se Alan Touring avesse chiesto lumi all’ipotetico ChatGPT dei suoi tempi su come decrittare Enigma avrebbe “appurato” che Enigma non era decrittabile.

Gli esempi sono innumerevoli e consentono di spiegare agli Apocalittici e agli Integrati dei nostri giorni in che senso l’Intelligenza Artificiale presumibilmente cambierà le nostre vite, ma soprattutto gli ambiti in cui i Large Language Model (Llm) non sostituiranno gli umani anche se ne plasmeranno le vite. Il punto fondamentale è semplice: contrariamente alle fantasie oniriche di illustri scienziati e alle nevrosi suscitate dai film di fantascienza (su tutti 2001 Odissea nello Spazio), le funzioni del cervello umano non sono tutte riproducibili con un software. Senza dubbio diverse attività quotidiane saranno svolte (meglio e più velocemente) da grandi modelli linguistici allenati su miliardi di testi e svariati trilioni di parole. Non c’è partita per un individuo esposto dall’infanzia a circa 15-17.000 parole al giorno attraverso le interazioni con i genitori o gli amici, le varie letture, la visione della TV o di YouTube eccetera. Impiegherebbe centinaia di anni per assorbire trilioni di parole. Ma un essere umano apprende attraverso una molteplicità di esperienze, di stimoli e di input veicolati con modalità più complesse della parola scritta e interagendo con altri umani che influenzano ragionamenti e comportamenti: insomma un processo qualitativamente diverso da quello di un Llm. Mentre il linguaggio scritto è elaborato, sistematizzato, organizzato, gli altri stimoli sono “anarchici”, destrutturati, illogici. È proprio l’ampio spettro di “irrazionalità”, che pervade la mente umana (soprattutto quella dei geni o dei visionari) e sfida le certezze acquisite, ad innescare la scintilla da cui si propaga il fuoco dell’innovazione. Come in genetica le mutazioni determinano l’evoluzione e la selezione delle specie, così il progresso scientifico è scandito dalle mutazioni di paradigma, cioè dal ragionare fuori dagli schemi. Talora entra in gioco il Fato, come per la penicillina, scoperta per puro caso da Fleming, alla cui mente non sfuggirono le implicazioni di quella imprevista morìa di batteri provocata dalla muffa, che altri avrebbero liquidato come fastidioso incidente di percorso. Il nodo cruciale è la creatività, l’assurdità, la capacità di prevedere o aspirare ad un futuro migliore in rotta col passato. Insomma la capacità di uscire dai canoni. Einstein, Galileo, Picasso, Elvis Presley sono stati giganti nei loro campi perché hanno deviato dai sentieri tracciati. Si potrebbe “umanizzare” i Llm imponendo ad alcuni di essi di rigettare gli schemi “razionali” ad esempio per trovare la cura contro il cancro al polmone. Ma comunque sarà un umano o un gruppo di umani a dover selezionare tra migliaia o milioni di “soluzioni” deliranti (ad esempio i piani di aerei diversi da quello dei fratelli Wright, destinati a schiantarsi al suolo) l’ago nel pagliaio della Ia che apre la strada all’evoluzione di un nuovo paradigma. Insomma sarà arduo “automatizzare” la creatività e ancor meno l’imponderabile (la scoperta degli antibiotici). Già ne La Ricchezza delle Nazioni Adam Smith aveva messo in luce come la crescita economica fosse il risultato dell’aumento di efficienza nel sistema produttivo indotto dalla divisione del lavoro. La specializzazione degli operai in ciascuna delle 18 fasi della produzione di un chiodo permetteva di potenziare le economie di scala e di affinare la destrezza di ciascun individuo. Quella che si sta impetuosamente sviluppando è una divisione del lavoro, non più tra lavoratori specializzati nelle varie funzioni o tra Paesi con differenti vantaggi comparati, bensì tra umani e sistemi di Ia, almeno fintanto che i primi esprimeranno una creatività più eccentrica, originale, stravagante e sofisticata dei secondi.
