WIP Wednesday

 Ren trudged up the stairs. Three finals in four days and a five-and-half-hour shift each day. "Just one more day". He threw his bag on the floor. His French and English books tumbled out. Coincidentally, those were the two subjects he needed to study.

“When Akechi comes home”. Akechi was better at English than he was. Ren stripped and flopped on the bed. Just a little nap. Then he’d get dinner started.

Morgana yowled and darted across the floor. Left, right, the direction changed by the minute. “Must run, must chase”. Morgana’s tail flicked and he took off upstairs.

The blanket lay twisted at Ren’s feet. He snored and rolled over onto his stomach. 

Morgana ran up onto the bed and over Ren. “Rahw,” he raced back off the bed and out the door. 

Ren lifted his head as the bed dipped but paid it little mind and soon fell back asleep.

“Cute,” Akechi smacked Ren on his ass. “Did you forget to get dressed”? Ren’s naked ass was a welcome sight after a long day.

Ren grunted, “go away, Akechi”. He hugged the pillow closer. Wait, Akechi? Ren opened his eyes to find Akechi staring down at him. “What time is it”? He asked, rubbing his eye.

“19:30,” Akechi shrugged off his shirt, throwing it and Ren’s clothes in the hamper. 

Ren yawned and sat up. “I was going to make dinner”. He rubbed his neck. “Oh yeah, can you help me study for my English final”?

Muffins (Chapter 1)

Alba woke with a start, in a cold sweat and breathing hard. She sat up immediately and quickly got out of the UNSCs idea of a bed. The clock read 04:13am, it was around the same time every night. Alba grabbed her UNSC issued sweats and pulled them on. Slipped her feet into her boots, loosely tied them, then quickly exited her quarters. 

Silently she sped through the corridors of the UNSC carrier, careful to not break into a run but moving far faster than what would be considered “walking pace.” Alba took a right then a left, navigating the corridors as if it were second nature. Until she finally got to the cafeteria. Sitting in the center of it was a stand with snacks for grab and go. Alba walked up to it and froze. 

The muffins were gone. She looked again. No muffins. The Spartan let out a sigh and simply stood there staring. Her shoulders hunched over a wave of deep disappointment hit her. 

“Hi,” a voice called. Alba’s head snapped in the direction of the voice. Behind the counter stood a woman with blonde hair tied in a bun with grey eyes and a bright smile, she wore an apron covering UNSC issued clothing. Alba felt herself take a step backwards. The thought of talking to anyone right now was too much for her. “Wait! Would you like some fresh muffins? They’re about come out of oven.” The woman called. 

Alba stopped her retreat. 

“That’s what you were looking for right?” She questioned. Alba nodded, and a beep sounded from behind the woman. “There it is! One second!” She called and ran into the kitchen behind her. Alba blinked before cautious taking a seat across from the counter. 

The Spartan tapped her fingers against the table gently avoiding making any noise. Alba didn’t recognize the woman. Normally around this time there were two people working in the kitchen. A tall skinny man who looked like he survived on coffee alone and a shorter woman who avoid looking at Alba like she was Medusa. The carrier had docked with a station outside earth yesterday. Maybe this person was a part of a new crew? Alba had heard something about switching out the cooks. Most likely, that would also explain why she didn’t seem afraid. Either that or this woman hadn’t realized yet she was looking at a Spartan. But Alba doubted that, even in “normal” clothes it was easy to tell. The large frame and height gave it away, not to mention the scars decorating her skin. Alba had never been great with people. And being a Spartan never made connecting any easier so this woman’s kind demeanor towards her was puzzling. 

Footsteps sounded as the woman rounded the corner, Alba’s head jolted up at sound. 

“Brought you two of them,” she said with a smile and put a plate with two muffins down in front of Alba.

“Th-thank you,” Alba stuttered, looking from the steaming muffins to the woman. The Spartan was floored, how did she get so lucky to get two muffins?

“No problem. Let me know if you like them. They’re made with a new recipe I came up with,” she replied and took a seat on the table. Alba blinked at the woman in disbelief, she had always eaten the same muffins. She liked them, they were nothing special but they were her 4:00am comfort food. Regardless, she couldn’t deny that the new muffins smelled great, far better than anything that had come out of that kitchen in years. 

Then a patch on the woman’s apron caught her attention. It said “Bestle catering and baking.” Alba had never heard of them and she was unsure of what to do. But Alba was feeling the air growing heavy from her couple of seconds of staring. 

“Are you a new cook?” Alba half blurted half whispered carefully removing the wrapper off of the first muffin. 

“Yeah,” the woman answered. “Apparently the last crew of cooks gave half of ship the shits. So they hired us! Funny that they hired contractors because the food was so bad,” she laughed. 

Alba nodded, she remembered that day. Half of her trainees were running screaming trying to find a bathroom or anything else they could use. That was a bad bad day. That also explained a lot about this woman, although Alba still felt puzzled. Here she was sitting only a foot away and there wasn’t a hint of fear in her voice. As a contractor, this woman wasn’t even UNSC so Alba was likely the first Spartan she had ever seen. 

Alba took her first bite of the muffin. It was warm, moist, delicious and sweet, but not overly sweet like the old ones. She finished the first one determining that one: muffins are better warm and two: these were much better than the old ones. Alba then finished the other one quickly, unlike the ones before she could see herself eating a whole tray. 

“Those were great, thank you,” Alba smiled. 

The contractor’s grey eyes lit up, “Really? I’m so glad you liked them! I was hoping they’d be better than those premade ones!” 

Alba nodded to reassure her then began to stand up. 

“Oh my name’s Jane Smith,” she said introducing herself as she stood up to match Alba. “Come by for fresh muffins anytime,” she smiled offering her hand to share. 

“Alba B221,” she introduced herself. The Spartan then looked at Jane’s hand, suddenly her limbs all felt too big and stiff. Alba jutted out her hand and attempted to give Jane a gentle handshake. Which resulted in an awkward dead fish handshake on the Spartan’s side. Alba removed her hand and felt a bit of heat rush to her face. 

“Nice to meet you,” Jane simply looked up at the larger woman and gave her a warm smile.

As soon as I finish, he runs straight at me.

"JENNA WAKE UP GODDAMN IT"

I receive a very painful smack in the face along with some water .

It was just a dream.My roomate rose sits at my side.

Tomorrowland Announces ‘Around the World’ Digital Music Festival

The mother of all online music festivals is coming soon —Tomorrowland: Around the World.

Following a countdown on the festival’s official website, Tomorrowland announces a new chapter:

Prepare for a spectacular two-day digital music festival experience on a new location, bringing together the planet’s biggest names in electronic dance music on multiple stages and the world’s best technology in 3D design, video production and special effects. Tickets will go on sale on June 18th.

The People of Tomorrow will be reunited on July 25th & 26th and the first chapter in The Reflection of Love will be written. Although this can’t replace the electric currents we feel in a crowd of thousands, coming together online is the next best thing. The festival will feature plenty of signature Tomorrowland stages – 8 different stages in total – including Atmosphere, Core, Freedom Stage, and Elixir, joined by 3 new stages, which have been specially created and designed by the creative team and 3D artists behind Tomorrowland.

Michiel Beers, co-founder of Tomorrowland: “Tomorrowland Around the World is the result of a gigantic team effort of hundreds of people who are working around the clock to create a never-before-seen interactive entertainment experience. Since we started this project and all ideas came together, we immediately felt an enormous energy and lots of positivity from everybody involved. For us it’s a bit re-inventing the festival experience, but we truly believe that we can bring the spirit of Tomorrowland and entertainment at the highest level to people and homes around the globe. We hope that hundreds of thousands of people will unite in a responsible way and that small Tomorrowland gatherings at people’s homes – from Canada to Australia, from Japan to Brazil and everywhere in between – will be organised. Especially during the weekend where normally Tomorrowland Belgium would take place, we really have the power to unite the world.”

Around the World’s lineup and schedule to follow. Tickets go on sale June 18th — a one-day ticket costs €12.50, weekend ticket costs €20.00 and includes a week of video-on-demand content to relive the entire experience. It was not disclosed where the money would be going. Tomorrowland has still not offered refunds on its 2020 festival.

South Africa legend Bryan Habana announces retirement from rugby

South Africa great Bryan Habana is to retire at the end of the season after being unable to force his way back into the Toulon team.

Habana underwent surgery to repair a long-standing knee injury last year but since recovering has found his path back into the starting XV blocked by the likes of Chris Ashton and Josua Tuisova.

The 34-year-old will retire as the Springboks’ leading try-scorer with 67 and three short of Victor Matfield’s record of 127 for caps won by a South African.

So it’s my turn to say Thank You: . The inevitable moment has come knocking on my door and I’ve welcomed it in for a drink. . It’s been more than a year of hoping, trying, pushing and willing to get back on the field for one last time, to taste the sweet victory or encounter that gut-wrenching despair. To hear the roar of the crowd or grab the pill out of the air. To make that last bone crunching tackle or score that last game winning try. But it’s unfortunately just not to be. I, like most, would have liked my career to have ended differently, but sometimes things don’t turn out quite the way we hope for. . So at the end of this season, it’s time to say goodbye and thank you to the game I so dearly love. . To try and sum up the past 16 years and how quickly they’ve flown by or even begin to describe how amazing the journey has been is impossible. . BRYAN HABANA FACTFILE 

Born: June 12, 1983

Place of birth: Johannesburg, South Africa

Teams played for: Golden Lions (2003-04), Blue Bulls (2005-09), Stormers (2010-13), Western Province (2010-13), Toulon (2013-present) 

International: 124 Test caps for South Africa and 67 tries

Honours: Currie Cup (2009, 2012), Super Rugby (2007, 2009), European Champions Cup (2014, 2015), Top 14 (2014), World Cup (2007)

Individual: IRB player of the year (2007), IRB try of the year (2012) 

He ends his career as the second highest try scorer in international rugby history behind Japan’s Daisuke Ohata, who finished with 69 tries from just 58 appearances. 

Habana was a World Cup winner in 2007 and was also named the world’s best player in the same year.

He shares the record for the most tries scored at World Cups with the late Jonah Lomu, who also managed 15 on the biggest stage.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, Habana said: ‘The inevitable moment has come knocking on my door and I’ve welcomed it in for a drink..’ he said on Instagram.

‘It’s been more than a year of hoping, trying, pushing and willing to get back on the field for one last time, to taste the sweet victory or encounter that gut-wrenching despair.

‘To hear the roar of the crowd or grab the pill out of the air. To make that last bone crunching tackle or score that last game winning try. But it’s unfortunately just not to be.

‘I, like most, would have liked my career to have ended differently, but sometimes things don’t turn out quite the way we hope for.

‘So at the end of this season, it’s time to say goodbye and thank you to the game I so dearly love..

Habana celebrates after scoring a try for South Africa during the 2015 World Cup in England

Habana’s last Test appearance was in 2016, when he was also vice-captain, but South Africa’s decision to rely less on overseas-based players undermined his hope of adding to his 124 caps.

He made his debut at Twickenham in 2004 and developed into one of the sport’s most lethal finishers, his electric pace and eye for an intercept making him a deadly opponent.

South Africa Rugby president Mark Alexander paid tribute to Habana in a statement, describing him as ‘one of the greatest South African sportsmen of all time’. 

‘We have been privileged to have witnessed the career of Bryan Habana, who will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the great legends of Springbok rugby,’ said Alexander.

‘During a career that spanned more than a decade and a half, he stood out as one of the most professional players ever to don the Springbok jersey, and over the years Bryan has been central to many of the most memorable occasions in the era of professional rugby.

‘We will never forget every time he delighted us by crossing the try-line or putting in yet another bone-crunching tackle, but those close to him will also remember the Bryan that was a true professional, always going about his task giving 100%.

‘He was also a leader in all the teams he played for and set an example to younger players of what is needed to succeed at the top.

‘But most of all, he was a proud South African who was a wonderful ambassador to our country wherever he went. When it came to using rugby as a tool for nation-building, Bryan was always in the front of the queue.

‘As a player, Bryan has set the bar incredibly high for succeeding generations. He has left behind a legacy of discipline, leadership and professionalism. He and his family can be very proud of all that he has achieved.’
